A sample title might be the name of the project and the description might be information about the creator; Title: “Ceramics project”, Description: “by Amy B.”, for example. The artist information you provide here will depend on parental permission. Including Form 1005 as part of your beginning-of-the-year packet will help you know whose work you can publish and whose you cannot. h. Click “Save” at the bottom of the page.

4. Post a picture to District groups There are 3 district groups each photo should be included in: Level (elementary, middle, or high) Grade/Course (K-8, high school courses (digital design, ceramics, etc.)) Media (photo, paint, ceramics, etc.) At the moment, we only have 3 groups available (Flickr puts a limit on newly-created accounts), but we will not have this restriction in a real scenario. The three groups are “elementary” (level), “2nd grade” (grade), “photo” (media). The steps: a. Click the “Organize and Create” link at the top of your window

b. That will open up the “Organizr” – a place where you can edit and organize your photos. Take a few moments to orient yourself. This is where you can easily send photos to District Groups

Your own albums can be created here, called “Sets”

Photos can be edited here and organized individually or in “batches”

Simply drag from the tray area on the bottom into the “editing area” in the middle

c. Click on the “Groups” tab. You should see a list of groups to which you belong.

d. To add a photo to the groups, simply drag a photo from the tray onto each group description. As you drop the photo into each group, you will get a confirmation message that the photo has been added. Click “OK” and then continue. e. To exit the Organizr, click the “Your photostream” link at the top right corner. You will return to your account.

General Information about Flickr Benefits: Cost: Flickr is a free service, with optional subscription benefits. With the free account, teachers can upload up to 100 Mb of content every month. Given that most digital photos are around 2 Mb each, this means that most teachers should not feel restricted by the upload limits. Usability: Flickr is the world’s largest photo sharing site. It has a usable, generally intuitive interface. It displays pictures quickly and allows both groups and individuals to organize work easily. Management: Each teacher decides how they wish to use the site and organize their content. For those who wish this to be an area where they create albums (called ‘sets’) to display either here or on their teacher website, this option is available. For those who simply want to contribute to the district galleries, they are free to do so as well. Portability: Each organized area of Flickr – individual accounts, individual sets, and group collections – all include an automatically generated slideshow. These slideshows can be displayed on individual teacher websites as well as district web pages, by copying a bit of code. TISs are trained to support this and will be available if teachers wish to set this up. Currency: Once a slideshow has been embedded onto a web page, each time a teacher uploads a photo into a set or adds her photo to a group, the respective slideshow will now include her photo. This means that uploading in one place can update many places all at once.

Constraints: Blocked for Teachers: Flickr is currently blocked for teachers. If the functionality of this web service meets our needs, we will approach the district about unblocking Flickr for teachers only. Blocked for Students: Flickr is blocked for students. This means that students won't be able to see embedded slideshows from their computers during the day unless a teacher displays them from his or her computer. Both parents and students will be able to access the slide shows from home, however. Some set-up required: The task performed during this test was to simulate the functionality of Flickr once some limited 'front-end' set up is complete. Each teacher would need to … o set up a Flickr account o sign up for all the necessary groups o changing 3 settings on the account page Working through all three of these steps takes about 10 minutes, and would be included in whatever training is designed to support teachers.
