L E T T E R F R O M T H E M AYO R Mayor Mike Palazzolo on What Makes Germantown Great

Welcome

O

UR COMMUNITY IS ON THE MAP AS A city striving to make a

difference in the overall health of residents. Germantown is one of only 25 cities recognized as a Healthier Tennessee Community by Governor Bill Haslam. Through the city’s Healthy Germantown initiative, Germantown prioritizes wellness by striving to improve the overall health and wellness of residents, encouraging them to be active, eat smarter and cut out tobacco. Germantown offers a wide variety of opportunities to help you achieve an active lifestyle. Our Parks and Recreation department hosts a variety of both children’s and adult sports leagues. From croquet to kickball, there is bound to be something to spark your interest. Do you prefer to travel off the beaten path? If so, the Germantown Greenway trail system might be the place for you. This trail allows residents to walk, run or bike along the banks of the Wolf River. With more than 750 acres of green space in our city, families have plenty of opportunities to play at one of our 29 beautiful community parks or facilities. Additionally, Germantown is home to a number of fitness-based businesses as well as our very own family-friendly Germantown Athletic Club. Germantown also offers a range of local restaurants that provide opportunities for healthy eating. A number of restaurants within our community boast an Eat Real certification, a nationally-recognized mark of excellence for the food service operators committed to holistic nutrition and environmental stewardship. Also located within our borders is the Bobby Lanier Farm Park, where a thriving community garden feeds members and a farmers market offers healthy choices to shoppers each Thursday throughout the summer months.

In Germantown, it is easy to find different ways to be active and be a part of our Healthier Tennessee community. So, take a look around, spend some time with us and experience Healthy Germantown. Mike Palazzolo Mayor of Germantown

Mayor Mike Palazzolo also serves as the Senior Development Officer at Rhodes College.

Germantown prioritizes wellness by striving to improve the overall health and wellness of residents. - Mayor Mike Palazzolo

The city is healthy in other ways too. Germantown Municipal School District is also growing healthy young minds. Students at the high school level rank above all other districts in end-of-course examinations, and a majority of GMSD students are on the track for higher education. The city is also financially healthy, maintaining a AAA bond rating from both Moody’s and Standard and Poor’s.

L E T T E R F R O M T H E C H A I R M A N O F T H E B OA R D Chairman of the Board Bob Hamilton on What to Expect in 2018 Welcome

H

ELLO, MY NAME IS BOB HAMILTON and I am the Chairman of the Board for 2018 at the Germantown Chamber of Commerce.

Having been in business for over 42 years and starting XMC Inc. (a Xerox Business Partner) in 1991, I have built my business on delivering an outstanding customer experience, and I plan to continue this with our Chamber members, Mayor Palazzolo and the City of Germantown. As I studied the Germantown Forward 2030 and the city’s Strategic Planning Process, it became clear to me that community, strength, health and sustainability is where the Germantown Chamber comes into play. As Mayor Palazzolo states, creating a sustainable city requires a long-term view. My vision for the Chamber in 2018 is to carry that vision into everything we do while growing our membership and involving our Chamber members. A strong Chamber creates a strong business community and that is what we have in Germantown.

Bob Hamilton Chairman of the Board Germantown Chamber of Commerce

Bob Hamilton is the Founder of XMC. Janie Day is the President and CEO of the Germantown Area Chamber of Commerce.

My plans are to continue the path blazed by the great people who have served before me and to plan for the future for the leaders that follow.

WHO’S MINDING MY MONEY: HOW TO CHOOSE A FINANCIAL ADVISOR WHEN YOU INHERIT

A

ccording to figures reported by the consulting firm Accenture, currently over $12 trillion is being “shifted” from individuals born in the 1920s and ‘30s to the baby boomer generation (people born between 1946 and 1964). And, in the next 30 to 40 years, these baby boomers will pass along another $30 trillion to their heirs. If you’re one of these heirs, managing your inheritance will require investment knowledge and experience that may be beyond the scope of your current banker or your investment professional. In fact, managing a significant inheritance may require the expertise of several individuals — but where do you begin the financial advisor selection process, and what should you look for?

Here are a few things to consider. Should You Keep Your Parents’ (or Grandparents’) Advisor? One benefit of keeping your parents’ or grandparents’ financial advisor when you inherit is that he or she is familiar with the investments. Yet some may view this as a negative situation. You may feel the current advisor has an investment style that doesn’t align with what’s important to you. Perhaps this individual isn’t a good fit for you in terms of personality. Using Your Own Banker or Financial Advisor Receiving an inheritance can be an emotional time, as you deal with the logistics of wrapping up the financial aspects of a loved one’s life. It’s natural to turn to your own banker or financial advisor at this time. After all, you already have a relationship with them. However, there may also be a downside to sticking with what you know. Your financial advisor

may not have access to the wider range of investments that your inheritance could benefit from. Also, depending on their role and the financial institution they’re associated with, they may not have experience in working with a team of other financial professionals or with a private client relationship manager who connects you to CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professionals as well as investment advisors, trust advisors, and legal professionals. Finding a New Financial Advisor to Manage Your Inheritance If you’re considering working with a new financial advisor, think carefully about what’s important to you in terms of what best suits your life and finances. Whether you’re already content with your current financial professional, your benefactor’s advisor, or you’re considering an entirely new financial advisor, ask yourself these questions before making a final decision about who’ll manage your inheritance.

1. Am I comfortable communicating with this individual? You should feel confident in their abilities to answer your questions in terms you understand. 2. Are they easily accessible with a convenient location? Consider how quickly your advisor responds to your phone calls or emails. 3. What financial credentials and education have they obtained? 4. How experienced are they? While their team may include junior members, you may feel better about having an experienced financial professional overseeing the individuals managing your inheritance. Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, part of Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare, was named to U.S. News & World Report’s 2016-17 Best Children’s Hospitals in seven areas: • Cardiology and heart surgery • Gastroenterology and GI surgery • Neurology and neurosurgery • Nephrology • Orthopedics • Pulmonology • Urology

Minimally Invasive Cardiac Procedure at Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital Helps Patients Keep Doing What They Love

F

ayette County resident Louis French knew something was wrong when he couldn’t walk the short distance to his barn without having to stop and rest. Besides being out of breath, he couldn’t saddle up his horse for a ride.

French was happy to learn he qualified for a minimally invasive cardiac procedure offered at the Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital rather than traditional open heart surgery he needed to replace one of his heart’s valves. “I feel great,” said French. “I’m just a new man. I can ride again and get back on the dance floor.” Patients like French who have aortic stenosis, one of the most common heart valve diseases which results in decreased blood flow, may be a candidate for transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). TAVR provides qualified patients with the minimally invasive option of placing a catheter through the large artery in the leg and following it up to the heart where a replacement valve is opened and then positioned. The catheter is then removed. This procedure is for patients who are considered at moderate or high risk for standard valve replacement surgery which involves open heart surgery. One benefit to TAVR is that it requires a shorter three-to-five day hospital stay, versus a seven-to-10 day hospital stay with standard valve replacement surgery.

“As a cardiologist, I continually follow and search for new technologies and procedures that will advance the care we can provide to patients throughout the Mid-South at Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital,” said Dr. Keith Anderson, a cardiologist with Sutherland Cardiology Clinic and Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital. “TAVR is an exciting technology that gives patients who are not a good candidate for open heart surgery an excellent treatment alternative.” Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital focuses on providing leading edge cardiac care to help patients living in and around Germantown live heart healthy lives. “Methodist’s top strategic priority is putting patients first in everything we do,” said Diane Ridgway, president for Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital. “We’re proud of our associates’ and physicians’ dedication to caring for our patients and their innovative solutions to elevate patient care.” In addition to advanced cardiac procedures such as the transcatheter aortic valve replacement surgery, Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown also offers a full complement of cardiac services and provides excellent clinical, diagnostic, interventional and electrophysiology care. Methodist Germantown also provides the latest technology in cardiac imaging with its hybrid operating room, cardiac catheterization labs, cardiac magnetic resonance and cardiac computed tomography.

NONPROFIT OF THE YEAR Nonprofit Winner of the Year SRVS Provides Opportunities and Services for Disabled Citizens

SRVS provides community employment, residential services, a children’s program, and community-based services such as family support and therapy programs.

T

HE WINNER OF THE 2017 Germantown Area Chamber of Commerce Nonprofit of the Year is SRVS, a 501(c)(3) non-profit disability services agency founded in 1962 after a group of concerned citizens determined a need for more opportunities for people with disabilities in the Memphis community. SRVS (pronounced serves) offers a wide range of support for more than 1,600 people, including community-based employment, residential services, and children’s services. A United Way of the Mid-South agency, SRVS is the “Family Answer for Disabilities.” The founders of SRVS were passionate about their mission to allow the disabled members of our community to be both fully-engaged and contributing members of society after high school. They established a “Sheltered Occupational Shop,” where people with disabilities spend the day working, developing skills, making friends, and enjoying fulfilled lives as contributing members of their community. The efforts of SRVS’ founders were successful; SRVS now supports more than 1,600 adults, children, and seniors with disabilities. The founding program has now transitioned into a community-based employment service for the disabled. Their Current programs, in addition to the community-based employment program, include residential services, a children’s program, and community-based services, such as family support services, pediatric therapy, and therapy for families. “SRVS comes from a place of love and compassion,” says SRVS Director of Public Relations Anthony Hicks. “SRVS is the state’s largest service provider for people with disabilities. SRVS is also the only disability services provider in Shelby County that supports individuals from birth throughout life.”

SRVS has been recognized on both a state and national level as a leader with this new business model, now a trend among disability service providers. SMALL BUSINESS OF THE YEAR MPM Group President Peter Morgan on why Marco’s Pizza is one of the Most Successful Restaurants in Town

A

S A VETERAN OF THE PIZZA INDUSTRY, Peter Morgan knew there was an opportunity to expand Marco’s Pizza, a growing national brand, to the Memphis market. “We picked Germantown first because we wanted this store to be our flagship in operations and exemplify the Marco’s mission: To make a great pizza that would create happy, satisfied guests and business opportunities for future franchisees to build out the Memphis market.” In January 2015, Morgan and General Manager Rod Stringer worked together open the Germantown location. Since then, the Germantown store consistently ranks among the top gross earners among Marco’s 780 stores. Since 2015, Morgan and his partners have opened seven more stores in the Memphis area and have another four store openings planned for 2018. “The pizza segment of the food industry is very competitive,” says Morgan. “The MidSouth is a very strong pizza market with nine competitors near our Germantown location. Our pizza and other offerings speak for themselves. The key is to have a very solid manager like Rod who has a passion for being the best in operations, developing strong team members, and remaining actively involved in the community.” Marco’s mission of being the “Slice of the Community” has led to more than $10,000 of donations annually to public and private schools in the area. They’ve also donated more than $30,000 in product to various local non-profit groups for their fundraising efforts.

“We budgeted less for print and digital marketing and more on donating, fundraising, and giving back to the community,” says Morgan. “We recently had a record week, our third this year. I was asked how we continue to grow in sales. My response was, ‘Be like Rod,’ meaning, have a passion for operation, creating loyal guests, supporting a well-trained staff, and being the ‘Slice of the Community.’” Their giving spirits extend to their employees as well. “Our goal is to provide better pay for our crew and operate with low turnover,” says Morgan. “We do focused recognition through our feedback from our guests. We distribute recognition cards for those who go above and beyond. We give out awards for record weeks. We hold mini pep rallies to stay focused on winning and provide incentives for team members to win through local store marketing contest. We also offer $5,250 tuition assistance benefits for team members, and their immediate family can also receive up to $2,625 per year.” With their successful business plan in place, and the right team members, Marco’s is looking at future opportunities to expand. They’re now on track to continue to grow in 2018 and beyond. “We now have three new franchises with leaders who were all first customers at the Germantown location, and all three are now building additional stores in the MidSouth. We now have eight locations with three under construction and four new agreements being signed in 2018. Our plan is to stay on course, serving the best product and ensuring every guest has a great experience every time.” W W W.G E R M A NTO W N CH A M B E R .CO M | PAGE 2 9

One & Only BBQ serves up some of the most delicious BBQ dishes in the MidSouth area. Pictured: Co-owner Alan Katzen

T

HE ORIGINAL ONE & ONLY BBQ & More opened near the intersection of Kirby and Poplar in 2007. They opened two more locations to accommodate the growing demand. Owners Alan Katzen and Joel Banes were born and raised in Memphis, the BBQ capital of the world, and you can be sure they know their BBQ. “We use only the highest quality ingredients to produce great slow-smoked Memphis BBQ, but the number one difference between our establishment and others is our people!” says Katzen. “Our team members are empowered to ‘do the right thing’ and meet or exceed every guest’s expectations.” Customer favorites include the pulled pork shoulder; pulled from fresh, never frozen, whole bone-in pork shoulders; smoked turkey breast and whole smoked turkeys, baby back ribs; and Millie’s house-made banana pudding with fresh meringue. In 2017 alone, they sold more than 7,000 pans of Millie’s banana pudding with fresh meringue! Other featured menu items include fresh cut salads like the Strawberry Fields Forever salad of fresh romaine, Nordic field greens, spicy sweetened walnuts, bleu cheese crumbles and fresh cut strawberries; fresh house-made Brunswick stew; BBQ quesadillas and nachos; and smoked meat sandwiches and plates, including the Memphis slow smoked beef brisket. Locals also rave about The Junkyard Dog, a plate stacked with a 1/4 pound of all-beef Hebrew National hotdog, pulled pork shoulder, BBQ sauce, baked beans, coleslaw, and Chicago giardiniera, covered in French fries.

We work hard every day to prepare outstanding meals. We go the extra mile to provide reasonable prices with friendly, knowledgeable, charming servers, and we serve it fast.” - Alan Katzen Their twice-baked potato salad was voted #22 by the Memphis Yelp community in their top 100 dishes in Memphis You Must Try Before You Die poll. Two locations were also awarded with the TripAdvisor 2017 Certificate of Excellence in 2017. With a score of 4.5 stars on TripAdvisor at all 3 One & Only BBQ’s, you can see why they’re a local favorite. One & Only BBQ is all about serving more than just great meals; they’re also deeply invested in the Memphis community and believe in giving back in any way possible, which is just one of the many reasons they’ve been selected as the Large Business of the Year by the Germantown Area Chamber of Commerce. “Every year we are able to help so many great organizations we are passionate about,” says Katzen. “In 2017, we provided money, food, or services to great organizations such as The Memphis Humane Society, The Special Olympics, The Cervical Cancer Coalition, The American Cancer Society, and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, to name just a few.” W W W.G E R M A NTO W N CH A M B E R .CO M | PAGE 31

eruse the menu of any local restaurant, and chances are most entrées are chock full of artificial flavors and genetically modified organisms with little to no nutritional value. These meals can total thousands of calories and hundreds of carbohydrates, with sodium and cholesterol levels that would make any diner cringe. To make matters worse, many restaurants don’t provide nutritional info for clients, so there’s no telling just how much gluten, sugar, and unnatural additives you’re consuming. The Eat REAL initiative is seeking to change the way consumers view their food. Eat REAL was founded in 2012 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting a realignment of the food industry by considering the health of humans, animals, and the environment in their operation decisions. The Eat REAL Tennessee Initiative is the first of its kind in the U.S., providing resources to inform consumers on nutrition and sustainability and to connect them with REAL Certified food and food service operators. Through eatreal.org, community-based activities, online resources, and social media, Eat REAL maximizes public awareness of healthful and sustainable food and beverage. Eat REAL has also received funding from the Tennessee Department of Health to prevent diabetes and obesity. “Eat REAL Certified utilizes a flexible, points-based system that is implemented with the assistance of independent, third party registered dietitians (RDs) who guide each establishment through a comprehensive review process including menu analysis, invoice and supply chain verification, and interviews,” said Nikkole Turner, project manager of the Eat REAL initiative in Tennessee. “Through the review a REAL Certified Report is created and recommendations are given to support the food service in making healthful and sustainable changes to their operations and menus. The REAL Certified trust mark displayed by the establishment creates a level of transparency. This mark shows that a registered dietitian has review the menu and has determined that the establishment is making the healthy choice the easy choice.” Several restaurants in the Germantown area are making a commitment to provide healthy dining options, and a few have even been named certified Eat REAL locations.

BLUE HONEY BISTRO Blue Honey is a recent addition to the Germantown culinary scene. This local hotspot opened in June 2017. “We felt that Germantown was lacking in restaurants of our style of cuisine and service,” says Owner Courtney Bryan. “We have both worked the Collierville, Germantown, and East Memphis areas for many years, so we’ve learned about the wants and needs of the patrons in this area, and we’ve made many lasting relationships with the residents.” Blue Honey is a full-service bistro with a rotating seasonal menu specializing in American-style cuisine. You simply can’t go wrong with their combination of great food and outstanding customer service. “Our customer service and desire to please our guests is what sets us apart from other restaurants,” says Bryan. “We are always willing to go the extra mile to make sure that our guests enjoy their time with us and leave happy. We’re also more than willing to customize any dish to suit the customer’s tastes and needs if at all possible. We enjoy working with people to create a unique experience for special occasions as well.” ROCK’N DOUGH PIZZA & BREW CO. One of Germantown’s best kept secrets serves up handmade pizzas alongside delicious drinks. Rock’N Dough uses only the freshest and highest quality ingredients; everything is made in house. Their dough and sauce are prepared daily. They shred their own cheese and smoke their own meats. In 2018, a brewery will also be available in the Germantown location, which will include at least eight of their own beers on tap. “We were inspired to open because of the close community in Germantown,” says Operations Manager Trevor Jones. “It’s a family-driven area that supports local business.” Rock’N Dough’s featured pizzas include the Smoker’s Pie and the Get Lift’d pizza. TAZIKI’S MEDITERRANEAN CAFE Taziki’s of Germantown is a local favorite among foodies seeking fresh, delicious dining. Their Germantown location was opened in February 2016 by owner Isaac Riddle. Located on Poplar Avenue, across from Whole Foods, their convenient location is a great choice for grabbing lunch or dinner. “We were excited to bring the option of a quick, healthy option to such a growing community and to help inspire people to be mindful of the food they are choosing to put in their body,” says Marketing Director Kayla Sanders. Popular dishes include: • Grilled Chicken Feast, with sliced grilled chicken breast, your choice of basmati rice or roasted potatoes, and a half portion of Greek salad • Taziki’s Signature Pasta - penne pasta and diced, grilled chicken tossed in housemade balsamic vinaigrette and topped with tomatoes, feta, and fresh basil, placed over a bed of fresh, mixed lettuce Sanders believes Taziki’s remains a local favorite due to their emphasis on fresh ingredients. “Taziki’s focuses on bringing fresh food to the community - no freezers, microwaves, or added preservatives for us!”

SOUTHERN SOCIAL One of Germantown’s newest restaurants has already made waves in the culinary community. Southern Social, located in the heart of Old Germantown, specializes in Southern fine dining. Their updated Dixieland classics and bourbon flights pair nicely with their sophisticated dining room. Owners Tom Powers and Russ Graham, who also own the award-winning Flight Restaurant and Wine Bar in downtown Memphis, opened Southern Social in November 2016. “With our location and setting, we are perfect for a traditional, fine dining experience that is showered with hospitality,” says Managing Partner Joe Fain. “You won’t want to leave without hearing the sound of the whistle and feeling the thrill of the train that travels down the old Southern Railway, a moment that leaves a breath-taking feeling and creates an insurmountable experience.” Guest favorites include their fresh seafood, scallops, perfectly seasoned sea bass, and fried pimento cheese sandwiches. Their Berkshire Tomahawk pork chop is also a favorite among local foodies. Steak lovers will rejoice at the selection of deliciously tender offerings. Save room for their desserts, all of which are created daily by a master in-house pastry chef. The most unique menu option, and their number one selling entrée, is the Aunt Thelma’s Fried Chicken. The dish is named after a beloved family member with ties to historic Germantown. The wife of owner Tom Powers, Lauren, has a great Aunt Thelma who served as the ticket master at the Southern Railway Depot during the 1950s.

The

Germantown Charity Horse Show Celebrates 70th Year S T O R Y B Y S A R A H VA U G H A N PHOTOS BY ALEX GINSBURG

T

he Germantown Charity Horse Show evolved in the way that most enduring events do: from a dream, a drive, and the dedication of its members. The dream began when a small group of friends, recently returned from active duty in World War II, decided that local interest in horses should be channeled into community-wide participation and an extension beyond county lines. Former Master Fox Hunter Walter N. “Sonny” Foster, Sr. recalls the Saturday hunts and Sunday afternoon trail rides which led to the organization of the Oak Grove Saddle Club in 1946. “On Thanksgiving Day that year, we invited everyone we knew who would like to trail ride to come to a barbecue at the Scout Hut of Germantown School. About 75 people showed up with nearly as many horses. The response sparked the whole idea for a horse show.” The first Germantown Horse Show was held in 1947 at a new privately-owned show ring and barn located less than a mile from the Germantown Charity Horse Show grounds, where the event is held today. The Germantown Charity Horse Show is one of the largest all-breed horse shows in the United States, attracting exhibitors and spectators from many parts of the country. They have been named one of only 24 Heritage Horse Shows by the U.S. Equestrian Foundation. Executive Director Bobby Lanier has been a member of the Germantown Horse Show since 1950. For Mr. Lanier, the horse show is a community affair. “It’s good, clean, family entertainment,” Lanier says. “You can bring the whole family, and there’s plenty of great food and entertainment. It also supports the community and is a great cause raising funds for the Exchange Club to feed children. We also participate in education programs in Germantown and the schools and so we have several organizations that benefit from the proceeds of the event.” The show takes place over the course of six days during the first week of June of each year. Each day, a total of almost 600 horses and riders convene for the competition which starts early each morning and continues on throughout the night until the Queen and Princesses present trophies, ribbons, and other prizes to the class winners.

The Germantown Charity Horse Show is a fun event for families to come and view all the great classes, the entertainment, the food and visit with friends they may only see once a year. - Bill Dudley Entertainment is also provided each night. As the week progresses, excitement fills the air as competitors vie for the Saturday night $25,000 Grand Prix, where professional and amateur riders compete over a timed course with jumps that reach four and a half feet tall. “The Germantown Charity Horse Show is a fun event for families to come and view all the great classes, the entertainment, the food and visit with friends they may only see once a year,” says Germantown Charity Horse Show Association President Bill Dudley. “This is definitely a kid-friendly environment with plenty of activities for the whole family to enjoy. There are also a wide variety of vendors at the show with all kinds of merchandise, from jewelry to clothing at Charity’s General Store to ice cold treats.” In addition to the main event in June, there are dozens of events that take place on the GCHS grounds throughout the year, including the Jack Russell Terrier Races. “From the beginning, it has been about giving back to the community,” says Dudley. “We do that by sponsoring the Exchange Club Family Center as well as the schools within the City of Germantown.” This year, the GCHS celebrates its 70th year of showcasing hunters, jumpers, Western Pleasure style competitions, and various breeds, including Racking Horses, Gypsy Vanners, and American Saddlebreds, among others. “It seems hard to believe that we have been here this long and continue to be highly successful, which is primarily due to our volunteers that take great pride in the exceptional hospitality that we show to all the exhibitors and spectators,” says Dudley. “We have several new events in the works but are not yet ready to share them as there are many pieces to put together. The Germantown Charity Horse Show has always been there to entertain the community and we intend to do that even more this year.” PAGE 4 0 | 2018 G E R M A NTO W N M AG A Z IN E + M E M B E R D IR EC TO RY

GERMANTOWN PERFORMING ARTS CENTER For more than two decades GPAC has been a staple of culture for the citizens and visitors of Germantown. Countless stars have inspired and entertained, and GPAC produces various arts education programs for all ages. GPAC has become the leading multi-disciplinary performing arts center in the area. Located in the heart of Germantown, GPAC serves the greater metro Memphis area with an 864-seat venue with a sprung pine stage, intimate black box theatre, elegant patron lounge, and a spacious lobby. When GPAC opened in 1994, the first performance by Ray Charles defined the space as a provider of world-class entertainment. GPAC presents world-renowned performing artists in a variety of genres, year-round educational activities for all ages including rotating visual art exhibits, a youth symphony orchestra, and community events that welcome over 100,000 visitors annually. FOOD TRUCK FESTIVAL One of the most unique events in Germantown is the annual Food Truck Festival. Proceeds from the festival benefit local education projects. Located in the Germantown Performing Arts Center Grove, the festival has been a big hit with adults and kids alike.

The event includes 12 to 15 food trucks, five-to-six entertainers, and plenty of activities for kids, like face painting, a bounce house, art projects, and more. Visitors of “The Fund Zone” can also participate in educational activities which raise money for the Germantown Education Foundation and the Germantown Performing Arts Center Education Fund.

IRIS ORCHESTRA IRIS Orchestra began as a bold experiment in September 2000. Embarking on its 18th season this October, IRIS has become a centerpiece of the cultural life of the Mid-South. IRIS Orchestra has a roster of talented musicians from leading orchestras, universities and chamber groups around the country. These musicians assemble as the resident orchestra of the Germantown Performing Arts Center. Over 17 seasons, IRIS has earned an international reputation as a champion of new American music, and consistently receives critical praise for its interpretations of classical pieces. More than 50 members of the orchestra have returned to IRIS for more than 10 seasons. “Many classical musicians pursue a variety of professional experiences,” says IRIS Marketing Manager Nancy Raileanu. “They join the IRIS community to play with Michael Stern and the other amazing musicians who share a passionate commitment to the highest standards of performance.” IRIS ORCHESTRA + MOSD

Members of IRIS orchestra arrive at MOSD toting various instruments, from woodwind pieces and a brass quintet to violins and a cello. The musicians are there to demonstrate various high and low notes and to play fun, familiar songs, such as “Old MacDonald Had a Farm.” Using grants from the community, the school created the program in an effort to combine speech + hearing therapy with an enriching educational experience. “When you’re born deaf and you receive the ability to hear through hearing aids or cochlear implants, you have a very short window in which to grow the skills you need to be able to transition to a regular school, and this program has made an impact on these children,” says MOSD Executive Director Teresa Schwartz. “We always welcome grants and community support so the children can have that experience, which is so very vital for us to continue.” W W W.G E R M A NTO W N CH A M B E R .CO M | PAGE 41

GERMANTOWN COMMUNITY THEATRE ince 1971, the Germantown Community Theatre (GCT) has been a source of entertainment for young and old. Residing in a quaint, turn-of-the-century, renovated schoolhouse, the non-profit organization produces a number of productions and performances yearly. The cozy, 112-seat theatre and rehearsal hall draws thousands of visitors each season. The organization’s funding predominantly comes from arts grants, City of Germantown grants, a small donor base, and theatrical audiences. GCT’s newest executive director, Eric Newsome, joined in September 2017. Newsome has also served on the board of directors for Theatre Memphis. He first became involved with GCT in 2014 after taking place in several performances. “We are ready to write the next chapter for GCT,” he says. “We’ve been able to do that with the very gracious support of much of our donor base, many of whom have been loyal to GCT for over 20 years. We have also received great support from the City of Germantown and the leadership there. The combination of those two forces have given us these great opportunities. We’re ready to bring some great shows to the city of Germantown and expand our educational program so that we can reach the next generation of performers.”

Communities with outstanding and innovative educational programs retain economic prosperity with their ability to attract and retain businesses, customers, and residents. To support these types of academic and enrichment programs in our schools, the Germantown Education Foundation was established in 2006. An independent, 501(c)3, nonprofit organization, the foundation raises funds for the Germantown Municipal School District through a variety of creative events and partnerships with businesses and residents. The mission of the Germantown Education Foundation is to mobilize community resources to support schools and educational programs in the city of Germantown. Through grants, projects, and initiatives, the foundation helps advance the academic achievement of students by improving the quality of teaching and learning. Through a grant-driven program, the foundation awards funds to each of the schools for a variety of teaching, technology, and learning initiatives. Since the foundation is academically focused, grants are not given to athletic or extracurricular endeavors. Program Initiative Grants are awarded to both teachers and schools to support creative instructional approaches and major educational initiatives.

In addition to grants, capital campaigns are enacted in order to enhance the school system. One example is the Riverdale Elementary School Capital Campaign running from 2016 to 2020. This initiative will add new classrooms, a fine arts center, a wellness and athletic center, a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) lab, and green space to our largest elementary school. Naming rights are also available through this campaign. Each year, the GEF partners with The Knowledge Tree for the Treasures for Teachers program, which provides each teacher in the Germantown Municipal School District with a $125 gift card to The Knowledge Tree. The GEF provides $100 and The Knowledge Tree adds an additional $25. Sponsorship opportunities for this program are available. From 5Ks to grand openings, there are many creative ways the GEF works with businesses and organizations to raise funds and awareness for its many grants and campaigns. The first annual Oktoberfest fundraiser took place in November 2017 and drew a crowd of more than 5,000 to experience live music entertainment, a beer garden, a kinderfest children’s area with moon bounces, incredible food, an authentic German band, a music competition, and a musical chairs competition in which the winner took home a brand new car. This annual event will support the foundation’s efforts to raise funds for municipal schools and directly supports individual teachers and schools each year by supplying grants for its specific education programs, technology upgrades, and more. We have people fighting to get into our school district because they are some of the best schools with the best programs and highest test scores. Volunteers or participants are able to directly impact education in their local district and therefore directly impact a child. Even if you don’t have children in the school district, supporting this foundation is allowing us to give tools back to educators, which helps the community in general.” In addition to attending fundraising events, benefactors can also support the GEF in additional ways. The Friend of the Foundation program allows Germantown residents the option of donating each month when they pay their water bill. One hundred percent of the proceeds are given to the GEF. Residents can register online at www. germantowneducationfoundation.org or at city hall. Donations can also be made directly on their website. GEF is also seeking volunteers to work their events, including Oktoberfest and the Color Run held the last Sunday in April, which provides half of the proceeds of every ticket back to each school the Germantown Municipal School District. Participants can register their school name at the event. In 2017 alone, Dogwood Elementary received a $10k check from proceeds contributed from GEF.

ermantown residents live in one of the safest, most beautiful cities in the Mid-South. They also enjoy excellent dining, shopping and cultural events, all without leaving the city limits their children attend schools with outstanding academic reputations and grow up in a friendly and nurturing environment. They have the conveniences of a large city with the cozy feel of a small community. In other words, they have it all. The city features more than 20 area parks, ensuring every resident lives within a half-mile of one or more parks. On any given day, one can find many residents exercising, walking dogs, or just enjoying a leisurely stroll through one of the city’s carefully landscaped and well-maintained parks. The environmental efforts Germantown makes are not overlooked either. A tree-protection ordinance stipulates that property developers must save as many trees as possible and replace those that are cut down during construction are replaced. This concern for the preservation of the natural beauty qualifies Germantown as an official “Tree City USA.” The city is also in the process of establishing a greenbelt that will link much of its 521 acres of parkland together. Germantowners are also committed to recycling, keeping their town looking beautiful, and extending their environmentally-friendly ways beyond their own city limits. MORE THAN WORDS When asked about how More Than Words, one of Germantown’s most unique boutiques, found its name, owner Lee Ann McGhee beams: “I have loved words, quotes and Scriptures since I was a young girl. While in college, I studied the age-old art of calligraphy and began creating my own line of illustrated verses. When my home-based business started taking off, I knew this was what I was supposed to do.” Lee Ann’s dream came true in May 1999 when she opened her first retail store in the heart of historic Germantown (two doors down from the legendary Germantown Commissary). Since then, business has continued to grow, prompting a move to the current 5,000 square foot boutique in Market Square just south of Saddle Creek. From handcrafted designer jewelry to locally-themed gifts, her boutique truly has gifts for every occasion, including baby, birthday and wedding gifts; collegiate gear and much more. Her inventory also includes a vast assortment of inspirational gifts, including her original line of framed calligraphy quotes and Scriptures. More Than Words was voted #1 Best Gift Boutique in the Memphis Most awards and was nominated three years in a row, a testament to her core mission of quality customer service. “My goal is to feature unique, one-of-a-kind gifts that create smiles and delight the soul while at the same time developing genuine, ongoing relationships with our cherished customers. We give hands-on personal assistance to help our customers find that perfect gift to celebrate any occasion. We consider it a privilege to show meaningful gifts to encourage or inspire people going through a difficult time,” she says. “We make sure our customers are satisfied and go that extra mile by genuinely caring, offering complimentary gift wrap and writing personal thank you notes.” “Unlike shopping online, ‘shopping local’ supports our community by providing jobs, investing in our local commerce and encouraging the networking of local businesses to make Germantown a wonderful place to live and visit.

More Than Words has grown to become a well known gift destination for Germantown residents.

I have loved creating an inviting, positive and happy environment for locals and guests to enjoy a magical shopping experience. - Lee Ann McGhee

Branded as America’s first lifestyle center, Saddle Creek continues to evolve; they recently completed a major redevelopment and expansion bringing the center to 173,000 square feet. “Saddle Creek has been an integral part of the economic growth of Germantown,” says Janie Day, the president and CEO of the Germantown Area Chamber of Commerce. “Saddle Creek draws shoppers from Arkansas, Mississippi, and all over West Tennessee to the national stores as well as to the locally-owned boutiques. The city of Germantown will continue to add bikes lanes and increase the walkability over the shopping and dining areas of the city.” Located in the heart of Germantown, Saddle Creek is the premier lifestyle market in the Memphis metro area, with 70 percent of its retailers unique to the market, including Anthropologie, Apple, Kendra Scott, lily rain, lululemon, Madewell, Paper Source, SEE Eyewear, Stoney River, Sur la Table, and Vera Bradley. Saddle Creek offers something for everyone, from custom jewelry and home goods to the hottest technology, and the latest fashions.

BEAUTIFUL SOUL BOUTIQUE Beautiful Soul Boutique launched in December 2014 as a result of owner Brooke Kellenberger’s passion for helping women feel good about themselves. “I started the boutique in my home. It began with house parties and grew from there,” she says. “In October 2015, I moved into Ella David Salon in Germantown. When we saw the success there, we realized we need more space, so in May of 2016 we moved to our Forest Hill Irene location.” The inspiration for the name comes from Bible verse Song of Solomon 4:7: “You are altogether beautiful my love.” “Women should love themselves and support each other,” she says. “My team is a perfect example of that! We are one big happy family.” Kellenberger’s inspiration to open Beautiful Soul stems from her desire to provide Germantown residents with fashionable clothing and accessories at an affordable price. For Kellenberger, the goal of Beautiful Soul is for women to leave feeling bold and beautiful. “I feel like we as women lack confidence sometimes,” she says. “I love hearing how good my shoppers feel after shopping with us.” She also encourages Germantown residents and visitors to shop local in order to connect with local business owners and staff while giving back to their community. “Germantown is simply the best community,” she says. “I can’t put into words the support we have had from customers and different businesses around the community.” In addition to Beautiful Soul’s line of accessories for women, they’ve also recently launched a line catering to little girls and tweens to help them find their new favorite fashions, always in style, and always at an affordable price. // CONTINUED ON PAGE 63

VOMFASS After moving to Tennessee in 2011, vomFass owner Russell Harms noticed the lack of quality oil, vinegar, and gourmet stores in Memphis. When an occupational injury sent Harms in search of a new career path, he opened vomFass in Saddle Creek in 2016. No other store of its kind exists in Tennessee. “Germantown didn’t have any stores offering oil and vinegar or gourmet, small batch alcohol,” says Russell, who, along with his wife Xiujie Li-Harms, owns the store. “Saddle Creek is a great location, where you can buy a blouse, cosmetics, and walk over for a bottle of wine, liqueur, liquor, oil and vinegar gift set, or a gourmet gift for the party all in the same shopping center.” Founded in 1994 in Waldburg, Germany by the Kiderlen family, vomFass now has locations in more than 280 shops in more than 28 countries. The Kiderlen family, who owned a small beverage company, found themselves in the sherry business after incorrectly marking “Barrels of Sherry” rather than “Bottles of Sherry” on an order form. “They were trying to figure out how to get rid of the sherry barrels that were delivered when they thought of the great idea to get a tap and some bottles and fill the bottles with sherry and refill them as the customers wanted,” says Russell. “This worked out great, and the vomFASS model, or “from the cask” model, was developed, and vomFASS was born.” Guests are enchanted by the treasure trove of rich oaken casks, colorful glass balloons, and artisanal stoneware crocks. These signature vessels are each filled with a delicious fruit vinegar, an exquisite oil, a unique liqueur, or a fine, rare spirit. The staff is available to offer tips on ideal pairings, product history, new cooking suggestions, and product uses you may be unfamiliar with but can’t wait to try. Customer favorites include the Forest Raspberry Balsamic Vinegar, Calamansi Balsam, Against the Grain Irish Whiskey, Royal Brakla Single Malt Scotch, Cognac

Cuvee Paradis, Latte Macchiato liqueur, Grapefruit liqueur, and Garlic olive oil. Chocolate lovers can find locally-made Dinstuhl’s chocolates and custom-made gift baskets in store. Aside from the unique and nostalgic shopping experience, local visitors must visit vomFass to experience the variety of high-quality products incomparable to those found in big box chains.

THE TRUFFLE PIG After selling items online and dreaming of opening their own location for years, Tricia Atkins and Tara Gorman officially opened The Truffle Pig in May 2017. “We’ve been dreaming about opening our own store for six years,” says Gorman. “We had our hand in small projects for all this time, but we were waiting for the right space to come along.” The perfect space turned out to be a 3,600-square-foot location at the corner of Poplar Pike and Forest Hill-Irene. “We chose to open in Germantown because we felt like there was a need for this kind of store here, and we like to be close to home because we both have a family,” says Tara. “We wanted to own a beautiful boutique consisting of various local vendors, local handmade products and art, and many companies that give back to the community. We have headbands made locally, and a portion of the sales go to St. Jude and also to help foster children in Africa.” “The name Truffle Pig represents our mission; truffle pigs dig underground for hard to find truffles (the mushroom, not the candy),” says Tara. “So we are the community’s truffle pig: We find products that you cannot find anywhere else.” A few of the gems available at The Truffle Pig include: gifts, art, jewelry, and home decor, in a variety of price ranges and styles. Customer favorites include local, handmade art and jewelry, purses, seasonal signs, and custom products. Half of the space is occupied by vendors who change up their offerings quite often and the other half by The Truffle Pig’s unique finds. Did you Know? Carrots really can help you see in the dark. Beta-carotene found in large amounts in carrots is converted into vitamin A in the body and this vitamin is vital for healthy vision. Vitamin A works its eye health magic by being transformed into a purple pigment called rhodopsin in the retina, and this pigment is essential for vision in dim light.

Farm Park S T O R Y B Y S A R A H VA U G H A N PHOTOS BY ALEX GINSBURG

n the heart of Germantown lies one of the cities most unique attractions: the Bobby Lanier Farm Park. The Farm Park was developed as a true grassroots campaign effort which brought together citizens, stakeholders, city officials, and staff in the creation of the comprehensive master plan. Several improvements have taken place at the Farm Park since those first visioning sessions. Recently, the city of Germantown completed construction of a key component of a master plan known as the “Hay Barn Pavilion with a grant from the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation. Future plans include the construction of hoop houses to extend the growing season of crops and to expand agricultural offerings, the creation of farm maintenance facilities, and the expansion of farm-based education opportunities. Plus, a fully-equipped outdoor kitchen will serve as a space for programs, events, and rentals. The Farm Park, along with help from its community garden members, is preparing to expand its growing plan to include more crop production in several fields.

“ The most unique aspect of the Farm Park is that it is open all day and free to everyone. It’s a beautiful green space to bring a picnic, to go for a walk, to visit animals, to support farmers, and to learn more about agriculture. I hope everyone will come out and see it for themselves.

- Joni Roberts, Farm Park Outreach Coordinator

Income generated through the sale of cut flowers and other seasonal produce will provide financial support for the park. The community garden continues to be a focal point of the farm site. It is tended by 65 members of the community garden association who pay a small fee and work a two-hour weekly shift in exchange for a portion of the harvest. This relationship allows participants to learn biointensive growing techniques and network with others who have a passion for the art and science of gardening. Plus, no chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, or synthetic fertilizers are used – only all natural, organic practices for this garden. Drip irrigation promotes water conservation and has been a great way for members to learn about various alternatives to the traditional sprinkler system. The garden and farm property soil is routinely enhanced through the on-site composting operation. The Farm Park has tapped into the local food movement by developing a working suburban farm that also serves as an educational site for sustainable living.

Germantown Mayor Mike Palazzolo watches as a professional chef demonstrates various cooking techniques for an audience at the Bobby Lanier Farm Park. The Farm Park offers educational programs to educate community members on the importance of locally-sourced produce. PAGE 70 | 2018 G E R M A NTO W N M AG A Z IN E + M E M B E R D IR EC TO RY

“The entire community benefits when local producers are supported,” says Farm Park Programs and Outreach Coordinator Joni Roberts. “It’s good for people to know where their food comes from, that it’s produced in a healthy, humane, and environmentally responsible manner. Local producers often share their expertise in how to select, store, and prepare meals from their products. There’s a sense of security knowing that the produce comes from the local community. Fresh, local food has a better taste than produce that has been shipped over a period of weeks. When people gather to purchase local food, they get to know each other and share a sense of community.” Complete with every vegetable that can grow in the Mid-South, including a variety of fruit trees and berries, as well as chickens and a stable, The Farm Park is a favorite destination and gathering place for the community. A farmer’s market also takes place in the summer and features live music, food trucks, community garden tours, cooking demonstrations, and children’s events. The Market vendors are “producers only,” meaning they must personally grow or make all the goods they sell. This locally-grown produce only rule provides both smart choices for both the environment and local economy. The growing desire of individuals and families to have a stronger connection to their food system and the curiosity to know more about green living has made the Farm Park the place to be. Germantown’s newest outdoor amenity has definitely taken root. “If the Farm Park wasn’t available, children would not have local field trips to learn about agriculture as well as sustainable living, there would not be a farmers market with fresh produce, there would be no community garden for members to gather and grow food and herbs and flowers, and there would be no place for children to come with their grandparents to visit chickens and rabbits,” says Roberts.

The Club’s variety of amenities and services attracts fitness enthusiasts of all types. Combine fitness and pleasure with any of their group fitness classes, indoor and outdoor pools, the very latest in cardio and strength training equipment, and so much more. Whether it’s Coffee Club, a Dive In Movie, the Annual Chill & Grill, or a simple 30-minute date with the rowing machine, Germantown Athletic Club will be your new home away from home. Germantown Athletic Club is currently undergoing a four-year renovation. The Club was established in 1990 and initially designed as a community center offering arts and crafts classes, sports leagues, and fee-based programs with very little emphasis on fitness. As trends have changed, they’ve made astounding renovations. The first phase includes more than 2,500-square-feet of child care, cycle and mind and body studios, new HVAC systems, and aquatics offices. The upcoming second phase includes the transformation of a basketball court to house enclosed group fitness studios allowing for additional cardio equipment to be available on the second floor.

What’s Cooking? A Q + A with Judy Oros, food and fitness extraordinaire + creator of the Germantown Food Prep Workshops at the Owings Life Enrichment Center Judy Oros poses for a photo with a client at a senior fitness workshop held by Oros at the Owings Life Enrichment Center

Q: What is the cost to attend? Are all materials and food items provided? A: Each meal prep has a theme. For instance, one night it may be Prepping Lunch, or Prepping Breakfast, or Preparing Snacks, or Holiday Meals. Depending on the amount of food I purchase and materials I bring, it costs anywhere from $50 -$100 per session. I bring all the food, containers, supplies, goodie bags, recipes, pictures, etc. It's definitely well worth your 1-2 hours of learning and eating. Q:What types of techniques or skills do participants learn? A: A typical class consists of answering several questions. What is meal prep? Where do I purchase containers? When do I prep? Where do I purchase the food? How do I plan, shop, chop, and prep? We then chop, prep, eat, and take leftovers home for the next day. Q: Where are the food prep workshops held? A: The Food Prep Workshops at the Owings Life Enrichment Center (Germantown United Methodist Church) Kitchen at 2323 West Street host 10 to 15 participants per group. There’s plenty of room and a fully-equipped kitchen with two ovens ideal for roasting our vegetables and meats. Q: What are the 2018 dates for the workshops? A: Book as early as possible as we can only take 10-15 for each session, or you can book multiple sessions at a discounted rate. Saturday Sessions are also available. You can contact me, Judy Oros, by email at Joros1234@aol.com, or call the Owings Life Enrichment Center at 901-753-3100. PAGE 7 2 | 2018 G E R M A NTO W N M AG A Z IN E + M E M B E R D IR EC TO RY

EALTH AND fitness is a vital part of the thriving community of Germantown. From an abundance of recreational activities for the whole family to plenty of fitness options for all ages and sizes, staying in shape and leading a healthy lifestyle is accessible and enjoyable.

IRON TRIBE GYM Ranked one of the top five best workouts in the nation, Iron Tribe’s 45-minute HIIT, or High Intensity Interval Training, group classes are fun and paired with a personal coach to help make you the healthiest version of yourself. Classes are available mornings, afternoons, and nights, Monday through Saturday, at their East Memphis and Germantown locations. Classes are 45 minutes long and broken down into three parts: warm-up, daily workout, and cool down. These three elements change every day, so there’s always something new to keep you on your toes. Iron Tribe classes are designed to keep you in top shape. The secret sauce may actually be in the local and global Iron Tribe community. John Irvine, the owner/operator of the two Memphis area Iron Tribe locations, says, “What I love the most about my job is seeing people from different fitness backgrounds transforming their lives through this program. We now have over 400 members here, and it’s incredible to see the positive impact this program has on not only their health, but also their family life, workplace, and overall well-being.” PURE BARRE Pure Barre offers one of the most unique experiences in Germantown. The Pure Barre technique is low-impact, which protects your joints by avoiding any bouncing or jumping. Each strength section of the workout is followed by a stretching section in order to create long, lean muscles without bulk. The technique works to defy gravity by tapering everything in and lifting it up. In 55 minutes, you’ll achieve a workout concentrating on the hips, seat, abdominals, and arms. The concentration involved allows you to block out the stress of life for one hour, creating the mental benefits one can obtain through the practice of yoga or meditation. As a result, a Pure Barre workout helps you achieve both a transformed body and a clear head in just one hour. “I love to see our clients’ confidence grow with each class and to see the lifelong friendships made between clients in the studio,” says co-owner Lindsey Laurenzi. “Pure Barre has a positive impact on the Germantown community by empowering our women to lead their healthiest, happiest lives by making their health a priority.”
