B L O S S O M I N G A R R I VA L Cultivating Social Roots Along Rome’s Metro Rome, Italy - City Center Rome’s metro is highly underutilized for social interaction. A new station planned for line C is located by two major Rome monuments: San Pietro and Castel Sant’Angelo. Developing vitality and a blossoming sequence of spaces that correlate to each other both above and below ground, San Pietro Metro Station’s harmonic relationship from the roots to the surface will be poetic enough as to describe the activities happening below from above. By utilizing a clear story, visitors will be enticed to experience the spaces above, while also being able to see the spaces below.

The roots of the underground subway sprout up to the surface, from which the surface will bloom into a popular social destination that becomes activated by the populace. Those arriving will be drawn to the elaborate underground network and will be intrigued by the social amenities of the newly designed San Pietro Metro station. This new station will give people a place to rest, helping to break the monotony of one’s daily routine, and to thoroughly enjoy the historic center of Rome.

This diagram shows the current subway lines in the Rome metro system. One major flaw in the system is there are not stations in or near some of the city’s major monuments and public spaces. There are a few stations that are already built in a new plan for Line C. These stations have a modern look, but lack the social aspect that a subway station could create. Part one take the existing line C stations and add public spaces. Part two will create a new station in one of the planned locations.

THE WILLIAM WHYTE EXPERIMENT An Exploration of Technology Through Social Spaces Six Major Australian Coastal Cities William Whyte was an American urbanist that studied human behavior in urban spaces. He published a video called The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces. His sociological study tracked people and pointed out trends in how people behave in certain spaces. This study was done in the 70s so my project looked at how we could advance his findings if we re-conduct this study in the present day with all of our advanced technology.

My project takes a look at a set of three barges that will travel around the coast of Australia. Two barges will be the test barges and the other barge will be the research hub for 50 researchers of various degree to live and work.

These six cities have a strong variance of cultures and population size so it will add another layer of data to compare and contrast. All of the cities have a waterfront so it allows for the barges to pull up and let people engage with them.

Research Barge The focus of my project is on a barge that is not only a research facility, but also a living space for up to 50 researchers at time. This barge is the main hub for researching two plaza barges. These plaza barges were inspired by the works of William Whyte, an sociologist focused on how people move through urban environments.

Two Plaza Barges These barges will be the test facilities for the researchers. They will be designed to have reprogramable elements such as an Ampitheatre, a Water Feature, and a Cafe.

There will be permanent structures built for researchers to secretly watch and record data while they are working.

INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION R E C L A M AT I O N Cleaning Up the Past Braddock, PA The Water Remediation Center is located in Braddock Pennsylvania, which is the historic area that first started using the Bessemer Process. This is the process that actually allowed steel to be mass produced. With this industry came pollution. Up until the Clean Water Act of 1972, this pollution continued to pollute the water of Braddock.

The Water Remediation Center is a museum and research center that teaches the Pittsburgh area about it’s historic roots and also teaches them what they can do to restore their water back to normal. This site includes rain water collection and filtration systems that clean up the site’s water.

When the area is not raining, the system pumps water from the river and lets it flow through the same system to clean the river water. This system also allows the researchers to apply their research to their own site.

The form derives from the erosive nature of water. The colored voids are washed away from the cold steel box.

The blue voids represent the reclamation of the water from its current pollution.

The green voids are above the water research facility to emulate the water before the filtration process.

The voids are full curtain walls to allow views to the river and they also open up to balconies.

There are collecting pools on the roof that collect water and drain into a rain storage/ filtration system.

Water Filtration Tank: This tank takes rain water from the roof and filters it down to the bottom cylinder where it is able to be used as an aquarium.

Rain Collecting Pools : Stainless Steel pools used to collect rain water and transfer it to the water filtration tanks.

Secondary Structure System : Wide flange beams connecting to the main truss system.

Second Story Void : Area carved out of the top volume; influenced by movement of water.

Water Filtration Tank : Colored acyrlic glass with steel tube structure.

Rain Water Collection : Sidewalks have rain water collection channels that divert the water through filtration systems.

Truss System : Wide Flange Beams with Round Steel Tube Diagonals

Raking Columns : Steel Tube Columns River Water Pump : Whenever there is no rain to be filtered, the science center pumps river water to be filtered.

The structure allows the main museum to float above the ground like the canopy of trees. This is matched up with the rows of trees placed in the surface parking lot.

The raked columns hold up a super structure truss system that works as one unit.

The colored fins not only provide an improved aesthetic of the building but also work as a louver to help screen some of the light coming in the large storefront windows.

THE BALLOON HOAX Creating lift by using Edgar Allen Poe’s Stories University of Virginia The University of Virginia has a special, historic dorm on campus that once held the world renowned writer, Edgar Allen Poe. The site of this project is the front lawn in front of his dorm building. This new building is to have a place for The Raven Society to meet and publicly read their poems.

The form of the building came from one of Poe’s newspaper articles, now known as The Balloon Hoax. This a story of a hot air balloon traveling across the Atlantic Ocean in three days. The interesting part of the story is this wasn’t done for another 75 years. The newspaper had to retract the story and apologize for spreading the false news story.

The building floats above a sunken in plaza that allows the poem club to have public recitals.

There is a connection with the current dorm it is next to. It mirrors the same architectural moves with a facade, spine, and main rooms

PA R K I N G R E C L A M AT I O N Reclaiming Valuable Public Space Knoxville, TN Parking Reclamation demolishes a very large parking garage next to The University of Tennessee’s two stadiums and instead creates a park that allows one to walk from campus down to the river. The river in Knoxville has very limited access and what better place to give than the university.

Instead of only creating a park and losing a full parking garage, which is a big commodity on college campuses, there is an underground parking garage that actually would increase the amount of spaces by a few hundred. This underground infrastructure also includes a train tunnel and a three lane road with shifting lanes. This not only allows for a continuous walk from campus to the river but also will help regulate traffic after events around this area.
