Breakfast at Peppertree Place

Just off Bell Street in the heart of Coburg is a rather delightful secret something which members of our club were privileged to share as a place for our regular club meeting last week.

This well kept secret is Peppertree Place which is part of Kevin Heinze Grow – an organisation set up to provide gardening for recreation, occupation and wellbeing. The success of this formula has led the way in therapeutic horticulture for over forty years helping people of all ages wide range of physical and neurological conditions.

The founder, the late Kevin Heinze, was a much loved personality on his ABC gardening show in Victoria was also renowned for his work with children in promoting the health and therapeutic benefits of horticulture. Kevin Heinze Grow was founded through his centre in Doncaster which eventually grew to support all ages and people with particular needs.

Peppertree Place was added in 2019 to support people in the northern suburbs. It is a delightful and peaceful island of tranquillity amidst the bustle of the nearby major roads and the Coburg business centre. Peppertree Place has a range of special features including – • a well-stocked nursery which sells plants to the public, • a delightful café in a unique garden setting, and • a community-powered garden which produces food for the café and provides a whole range of nature-based experiences for our participants, staff, volunteers and the broader community.

Most of the plants in the nursery are produced by participants in the Kevin Heinze Grow therapeutic horticulture programs under the supervision of qualified horticulturists and dedicated volunteers.

The café provides training for people with disabilities, helping them find jobs in the café and hospitality industries. Produce from the kitchen-garden is harvested for use in the café and great coffee is served in the unique and peaceful ambience of the Peppertree Place garden.

Breakfast at Peppertree Place

The people you see at Peppertree Place might be a combination of Kevin Heinze Grow program participants (including participants in the NDIS), volunteers, staff and visitors who use the garden to connect to nature and community. The programs are designed to facilitate social connections and opportunities for people to engage in meaningful activities which promote recreation, personal development and wellbeing.

The wide range of programs include – • Grow Program - Therapeutic horticulture activities in a garden setting • Clinical Services – Occupational Therapy, Speech Thrapy, counselling and Art Therapy • Hospitality Program – Training in the hospitality industry for people with disabilities • TAFE certificate I & II courses in partnership with Box Hill Institute • Grow on the Go – Training for people with Disabilities seeking employment in Garden maintenance • GROW Well – Tailored therapy for children who have experienced trauma or have a disability • ReGROW – Gardening group for adults living with cognitive impairment as a result of dementia, ABI or stroke.

• Teenage Program Flexible yet structured activities to assist young people transitioning to post school options.

Moreland Rotary members were treated to a delightful breakfast at the centre and given a tour of inspection by Marketing and Fundraising Manager Georgia Tracy, which included the propagation shed with the propagation mats that Coburg and Moreland Rotary helped fund (see photo at the top of this page).

We thank Georgia for showing us around this delightful centre and giving us a wonderful insight to such a hidden gem, We gave special thanks to Alex Baxter for preparing us a really delightful breakfast.

Peppertree Place is really a wonderful asset to our community in so many ways and our club looks forward to exploring ways of working with Georgia and her team to contribute to its good work and help increase the community appreciation and involvement.

They come from a wide range of backgrounds and are invited because they hopefully inform and stimulate our members and guests. We feel that this is of value in fostering a deeper understanding of our diverse community and even providing guidance as to the types of activites and projects our club may engage in.
