Backwater Adventures By Jay Gardner

By Joey Farah

Welcome to town folks! Glad y’all stopped by, and hope you have a great time! Stay out of trouble! I’ll give you a few words to the wise, in the event you have any questions. First off, Yeah! The traffic was crazy! We’re having some issues with the new stoplight and of course the road capacity, but we’ll figure something out. Make sure to come out to the beach earlier tomorrow. Also, bring ice from in town if you haven’t noticed already. Ice is hard to come by on the

Farah’s Fishing Adventures Well spring break here on our Island is commanded by the sun. Days with wet and cold will be more like a January Monday afternoon. What always takes me by surprise is the speed that spring breakers of all ages

The drum run in Baffin is still hot for some big ugly drum! John with a 20lber.

Rowdy from Austin busted a double back to back drum for spring break this week in a gravel bed in the mouth of Baffin Bay.

Tammy and Kenny came down and knocked out easy limits of trout with Farah on soft plastics along afloat Bluff this week. Bull tides have brought in beautiful water conditions and lots of trout.

flood the beach when the sun does peak out. The fishing in the other hand is much more dependable and this year it didn’t let us down. A full moon started us off with a mid-day bite and a AWSOME afternoon fishing pattern. Great water conditions still preside from the JFK all the way into Baffin. Drifting with soft plastics is in top form right now with lots of actions and limits most days on trout. Live shrimp under popping corks is working well down south but in the upper Laguna Madre’ you’re getting ate up with pin perch and skip jack. The ICW has been a highway for shrimp migrations and with that the trout and reds are right there with them, but feeding at night. The land cut will be turning on next week as the bull tides receded and those southeast winds blow. I’ll be down south getting some of the best trout action of the year. If you are way over due for a fishing adventure or planning a trip for incoming guests give me a call we are always having a good time AND CATCHING FISH. I watched people pulling in sheep head and pompano today off the jetty with a incoming tide and I’m sure with a bucket of ghost shrimp a fella could put a stringer of those fish over the shoulder. Spring is sprung, now get out and get wet!

bubble float with purple tentacles that can stretch out far from the float. If you get nailed by one of these guys get that tenderizer on there as fast as you can. The lifeguards typically put on some kind of concoction with baking soda and peroxide, if you can make it to a station before your eyes start watering from the pain and you can’t see. Getting to those quickly is important and DON’T RUB IT, THAT MAKES IT WORSE. And if you’re curious about the brown floating weed (Sargassum), there are tons of little cool fish and shrimp and crabs in that stuff. Walk out away from the beach a bit and either scoop up a piece in the water with a bucket or fine-mesh dip net. Take it back to the beach and shake it out into the bucket and see what drops out. The farther out you get it, the better, as by the time it hits the beach all the animals have literally abandoned ship.

And now the Loyal Readers section - Well, here we are folks, so far this week we are looking at “three at 30mph” conditions. The southeast winds are sandblasting the spring break lobsters out on the beach as I write this from the veritable safety of the office buried deep inside the confines of the City. Right now, poor decisions are being made and the use of sunscreen is being neglected. Beaches are filling up by noon, and the onslaught has begun to pick up speed. I’m watching the webcam provided by the City at the end of Whitecap, and it’s a car about every 5 seconds going on to the beach. I think I read that this weekend is the “pivot” Dr. Tunnell, Dr. McKee, and Jace weekend where many schools Island. And don’t forget your parking pass, overlap, and the weather looks decent. Y’all although you can buy one when you hit the loyal readers will have to tell me what it’s like sand. The City has people selling them at the out there, because I’m not leaving the house. access roads where you need them. Yes, your I’ll just watch the fun from the webcams. You selfies are taking a long time to post because can watch the webcams too at CcTexas.com. the cell towers are jammed with everyone else The CCA banquet went off last week, and trying to post selfies at the same time. I have to say that was the smoothest banquet So, of course you know that going north on Hwy 361 towards Port Aransas will get you to north Packery, where most of the folks hang out to be seen. If you’re looking for peace and quiet, however, go straight through that light and the next, and then start looking for a left. South of Packery is usually a lot quieter. You could also keep going straight all the way till the pavement runs out and hit the Padre Island National Seashore. There is lots of space down there, and you might even get to see a nesting sea turtle. It’s that time of year. If you plan on swimming in the water, don’t forget your meat tenderizer, as the winds bring in the dreaded Portuguese Man-o-War. A purple

we’ve ever thrown. Everyone had a blast, and we raised more funds for the fish than we ever have. We also gave a Conservationist of the Year award to Jace Tunnell, and the Lifetime Achievement Award to his dad, Dr. Wes Tunnell. The projects that those two work on range in between Cedar Bayou and Cuba, literally. We were proud to honor them. While it’s a ton of work, I’m glad we finally made it through and can focus on other things for now. Well you crazy characters, that’s about enough this week. Drop me a line at tarponchaser@ mail.com and I’ll get back to you. Rockstar Bob – give me a call. Time for fishing and shenanigans. You have my number.

Spring time is here so many Texans are beginning to travel. Texas has nearly 80,000 miles of roads and highways: That is more than any other state in the United States (US)! As a result, it is important to keep some traveling safety tips in mind. Texas is full of beautiful sights and destinations. Many places are spread fairly far apart, though. Planning your road trip is important. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) established the Texas Travel Information Centers throughout the state and they are staffed by professional travel counselors. These staff members will provide information on points of interest, events going on, “Welcome to Texas” photo opportunities, and more. In addition, they will help you plan the best route for your trip. These centers can be contacted by calling (800)452-9292 or by visiting http://www.txdot.gov/driver/travel/ information-centers.html. A week or so before a road trip is planned, make sure to check the vehicle’s maintenance status. This includes checking the tire pressure, oil level, engine, battery, etc. You can find a more complete list of pre-trip maintenance at http://www.dmv.org/how-to-guides/pre-tripmaintenance.php. Also, ensure that you and your passengers have all the proper paperwork readily available in the vehicle like your drivers licenses, proof of insurance for the vehicle, and road side assistance contact information. Pack a paper map in case there is no cell phone service at some point in your trip, as well. Before you take off on your trip, check the weather and road conditions. There are several useful websites for this. Some of these include: http://drivetexas.org, http://www.accuweather. com/en/travel-articles/leisure/be-preparedwith-road-trip-pla/66147, https://www.

BINGO at the BEACH for 2017 a Great Success Kiwanis Club of Padre Island Supports Kids’ Causes By Brent Rourk The Kiwanis Club of Padre Island BINGO at the Beach 2017 season ended on a ‘great number’ last Thursday evening at Schlitterbahn when a first time BINGO player won two prizes of $750 each. Her unending smile and fists full of $1,500 in cash created a stir as a full house crowd applauded her extraordinary good fortune. Prior to that windfall Thursday evening, fifty one players won door prizes and 16 players won cash prizes from $50 to $160; with many $100 and up winners. Door prizes from local door prize sponsors ranged from $4 value up to $200 value with the largest prize being a voucher for a stay at our Island’s Schlitterbahn. Quite a night’s haul for the Bingo players.

to the community for their support. Our motto “it’s all about the children” is true and the funds raised will help children at the Island Foundation schools, Flour Bluff ISD and other Clubs and organizations that work with our youth.” Vaughn continued, “A big ‘Shout Out’ to Schlitterbahn Resort Corpus Christi. Amy Gazin, Kaylynn Paxson, Paul Seehusen and their staff made this a pleasant experience and was receptive to ideas to make the bingo playing more enjoyable each week. The larger Game Room helped with the number of folks that could play. We had capacity crowds twice during the six weeks of Bingo and are hoping that a larger room will be available by next year.” Summing up, Vaughn thanked many for an extremely successful BINGO, “Again, thank you to all the Bingo players, sponsors and donors that contributed to the success of this event. And thank you to the Kiwanians that helped each week as well as Rusty Griffith and James Gay.” Schlitterbahn Director of Marketing, Amy Gazin was ecstatic about the 6 weeks of BINGO at the Beach 2017, stating, “ Kiwanis ‘Bingo at the Bahn’ was a terrific success and it was so exciting for the Schlitterbahn Corpus Christi staff who took part. We look forward to continuing our great partnership with the Kiwanis Club of Padre Island in the future.”

All Profits to Children’s Causes

A $1500 winner! Vaughn stated, “We had a very successful Bingo fundraiser this year. Seems that this local event is becoming more popular each year and the Kiwanis Club of Padre Island is very grateful

This year BINGO at the Beach happily raised over $13,000 to be used for children’s causes. Last year Kiwanis funds were given to many local organizations including SMA Science Olympiad, Boy Scout Troop 949, Island Easter Egg Hunt, Breakfast with Santa, Beach cleanup, Flour Bluff Junior High Math Club and Science, Veterans H.S. Key Club, Timons Ministries, CASA, and more The Kiwanis

Everyone, young and old, had fun winning at BINGO this year

Board will soon meet to discuss some of the organizations that Kiwanis Club of Padre Island will support this year. Many local businesses and individuals were fantastic supporters of BINGO at the Beach 2017. Vaughn commented, “The number of sponsors and door prizes this year was also at a record high. I will not list the sponsors and donors of door prizes as I believe this is being published. However, a big thank you to all of you that contributed to the fun and success of this event.”

Local Business Support for BINGO Vaughn was quick to thank all of the local businesses that made BINGO a success. A special thanks to the following organizations and individuals for their support of BINGO at the Beach this year: Coastline Properties, O2 Dental, Merrily Piepho Coldwell Banker Pacesetter Steele, Dr. Jack McIntyre McIntyre, Garza, Avila & Jurica, Renee Tortorello Farmers Insurance, Bumstead Properties, Elite Garage Floors, Brent Phelps Dentistry, Kim Erwin, Realtor Keller Williams, Dr. & Melanie Ortiz (Surgical Associates), Hanson Travel Cruise Planners Victoria Hanson, Rep Todd Hunter, Council Members At Large Paulette Guajardo and Michael Hunter, County Commissioner Brent Chesney. See you all next year at the Kiwanis Bingo. Support kids, win prizes, and maybe drive home with a pocketful of cash.

fhwa.dot.gov/trafficinfo/, and https://www. wunderground.com/travelplanner/index.asp. Be sure you and your passengers have a plan on a driving schedule. Taking turns driving helps to reduce the risk of drowsy driving since this buddy system enables one to focus on driving as the other rests and/or decides on music to listen to. Also, plan the stopping points to take breaks and/or eat as you switch drivers. While driving, stay aware of your surroundings and stay alert especially while you are in construction zones, bad weather, and heavy traffic. Also, do not forget to slow down and/or move over if you see emergency vehicles and/or tow trucks on the side of the road with their lights on because it is the law! In addition, eliminate as many distractions as you can. Finally, be sure you and your passengers are buckled up for the duration of the trip! Traveling through Texas is a beautiful and fun experience. Make the most of it by planning the trip, in full, beforehand. This will warrant a safer and more prosperous vacation. Be sure to utilize different traveling checklists and safety resources, like https://www.dps. texas.gov/tle/traveltips.htm, as well. With planting instructions included, the trees will be shipped at the right time for planting, between March 1 and May 31. The 6- to 12-inch trees are guaranteed to grow or they will be replaced free of charge. NAS Corpus Christi Finalizing April 1-2 Wings Over South Texas Air Show

Naval Air Station Corpus Christi (NASCC) personnel are working fast and furious as details for the 2017 Wings Over South Texas Air Show are being finalized. Behind the scenes, fine tuning is taking place including laydown of the air show midway, the performers, and preparations for traffic and parking.

“Free at last” students weren’t the only ones ready for Spring Break this week. The fleet stood ready to respond to the influx. We’ve got the scanner on at the Moon office. So far, it’s mostly kids doing doughnuts, but it’s also 10:39 a.m. on a Wednesday. We’re betting next week’s blotter is going to be a bit...longer.

Visitors will arrive via NAS Drive and be directed to free parking areas.

Several car clubs will also have their vehicles on display. A Kid Zone packed with activities and inflatables will be available to help entertain children.

The flying will begin at 11 a.m. The National Anthem will be sung as the Army’s Golden Knights carry the national ensign to begin the show. Rob Reider, this year’s air show announcer, will delight crowds as he describes the aerobatic feats of the various military and civilian performers. The lineup includes: Rob Holland in his MXS-RH, Trojan Phlyers flying T-28s, a U.S. Coast Guard search-and-rescue demonstration, Paul Fiala in his Great Lakes Bi-Plane, Jerry Conley with his DE Havilland DH 100 Vampire, Beth Ann Jenkins in her B-25 with the Devil Dog Squadron, a P-8 Poseidon, a Marine Corps MV-22 Osprey, Skip Stewart in his Pitts S-2S, an Air Force F-16 Viper, the “Prowlers of the Pacific,” the Golden Knights, and the U.S. Navy’s Blue Angels. “The air show at NASCC will be held over the water again this year,” Capt. Three Chords and the Truth

By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com

Fear and loathing at spring break… Just to state the obvious, a multitude of young spring breakers have invaded our little island. As of this writing on Tuesday, a good showing of revelers have staked claim to their patches of sand from the jetty to as far past Pole 39 as you want to go. I know by this weekend, parking will be a premium and the police scanners will be screaming. One thing I’ve observed in the “Mom Must Be So Proud” department is that the lady’s fashion statement this year seems to include a liberal viewing of the posterior. What was previous barely clothed on the backside, has now thrown caution to

about drinking and driving during spring break, that is unless you have Betty Bail Bond on speed dial. Trust me, the jails will all be full by Monday. I’m done. You kids get out there and have some fun now. And don’t you be turning up dead or pregnant when this is all over.

Scattered shots… Billy Snipes and the Rasta Cowboys featuring Art Galvan on bass and Cody Strong on drums played Giggity’s on Saturday Cowboys that included Art Galvan on bass and Cody Strong on drums. I really enjoy listening to Billy with a band (he usually plays my Tele and man can he make that baby smoke.)

By far, the best act I saw all weekend was Mark Monaco and the Stray Hearts (San Antonio, TX) at the Back Porch on Friday. He has a really tight band that includes a fiddle player and his harmonies are as in the pocket as it gets. He’s in the “Texas Country” vein but could easily pull off some soul or R&B to put

Coming this weekend… The golden voice of Simon Snyder will grace the stage at the Back Porch tonight, Thurday the 16th. Also, ASM and the Kathman Blues Band (Kathmandu, Nepal) will play the 361 Bar. I

Matt Hole and the Hot Rod Gang will play Giggity’s on Saturday.

Spring Break 2017 is upon us.

Chris Saucedo played the Back Porch on Saturday Otis to shame. This guy has got some serious pipes. I got my eye on this one. On Saturday, another Americana band from San Antonio, Chris Saucedo, also played the Back Porch and he’s got some serious chops, too. The weather was pretty rainy and cool but these shows were as hot as the get. Over at Shorty’s on Saturday, Ty Dietz brought his A team with Steve Santos (Duke E. Brown) on guitar and J.M. Muniz (Matt Hole, Buddy Trevino, etc, etc) on standup bass. If you haven’s caught Ty Dietz yet, you are seriously missing out. He’s got a tow sack

Ty Dietz with Steve Santos on guitar and J.M. Muniz on stand-up bass played Shorty’s on Saturday full of great original songs and his covers are always a respectful nod to our local songwriters (Dan Brohdag, Buddy Trevino, Adam Caroll, etc). This man is really special. On Saturday, I also caught Billy Snipes and his band of Rasta

the wind. That’s right. There is now ample exposed fannies in every direction and on every variation of torso… fat hineys, skinny hineys and all hineys in between (hiney being defined as either of the two rounded prominences on the human torso that are posterior to the hips and formed by the gluteal muscles), it’s right there in front of God for everyone to see. And when said fanny belongs to a young lady who looks like she is 13 years old at most, it’s downright creepy. They all look so young. I stopped the car to take some pictures at a place where they had several of those big trucks rigged up with dance floors, stages and huge sound systems and the crowds had already swelled to riotous proportions. They were working on installing stripper poles while I was there. I only stuck my head in for a minute, but brother, what I saw was a festering den of sin, and I mean that in the nicest way. I dunno. It just looked like somebody was bound to get pregnant in there. You can’t put that much exposed flesh together with hormones so thick you can smell it, and not expect something to run amuck. It is a little comforting that there is such a visible police presence, but come this weekend our poor boys in blue are going to need the National Guard to keep this crowd in line. Like I say, it’s only Tuesday as I write this but they are swarming in like mosquitoes. I apologize to my friends at the Chamber of Commerce that I paint a picture that is less that inviting to most, but actually this is the environment that spring breakers are drawn to. I just have to consider my mental well being as just collateral damage and should be thankful that I’m getting a great freak show for free. And the good news is, it’ll be over soon. So hunker down. And wear those seatbelts (even on the beach) and come to a complete stop at all the stop signs. I know I sound like your mother, but you’ll thank me later. And to all you turkeys in your two story pickup trucks that insist on doing donuts on the beach…just know that it’s a perennial favorite of PAPD. You will really impress them with that one. And here’s one last no-brainer: you are a fool if you even think
