“What are you in for buddy?” “Rolling back the miles on used cars…how about you?” “They got me for littering and spitting on the sidewalk.” “It’s going to be a long stretch.” We don’t’ have any intricate crimes like that to report on our little sandbar this week. The sneak thieves are still working the unlocked cars along the beaches but otherwise things are calm hereabouts…with one exception, Island coyotes. The coyote population in both Padre and Port Aransas have been busy of late. One attacked and killed a dog on a leash near the ball field on Beach Street in Port A and there have been numerous reports of coyote sightings on residential streets in Padre Island neighborhoods. There has been a continual give and take between the Island’s original inhabitants and the later-arriving humans over the years with each side winning a few and losing a few. A few years back an Island resident watched in shock as a coyote came climbing over a six-foot wooden fence into a backyard and snatched up a small dog. About three years ago a girl was walking her dog near Douden Park when a coyote which had swam his way across the canal from a spoil island chased them down the street. When we enter periods of little rain the coyote population pushes into the neighborhoods looking for water and food. When you factor in the owls that hunt by sound and swoop down on cats and other small animals at night it makes for a treacherous place for house pets. A homeowner on Primavera some years ago couldn’t figure out why the koi fish in the small pond on his patio kept disappearing; where could they possibly go? He got his answer one night when he saw an owl swoop in and grab one for his lunch and take off. We would have thought he was crazy but there were a handful of stunned witnesses to bear him out. We know it sounds crazy but a few years ago an owl tried to carry away a cat while we watched in shock. We found the owl in the canal behind our house the next day where his soaked feathers prevented him from flying away.

The price of a lifetime pass to national parks for people 62 years of age and older is about to change.

This strip of land along Packery Channel near the JFK Bridge is owned by the Texas General Land Office and is one of the few remaining public areas along the channel. By Dale Rankin Places for anglers to fish along Packery Channel have started to shrink in recent months and it is a trend that looks to continue as The Island becomes more developed. Crews this week began work on the east side of the Aquarius/SPID intersection that will eventually lead to development on private property there which will limit or eliminate access to the private land that lines the bend in the channel that has

Public access was recently restricted on the north side of the Packery Bridge over State Highway 361 due to littering by people fishing there. Public access now is limited to the narrow right of way between the roadway and wooden bollards marking private property. Access on the north side of the channel near the bridge is also limited leaving anglers with limited access all along the channel. Public access on the channel

is now limited to the city park on the north side of the channel and Packery Channel Park about a mile inside the bridge. However, there is some good news for people looking for a fishing or gathering spot along the channel. In recent weeks city crews have done work to improve the sand road that runs behind the beach parallel to the South Packery Jetty leading from the beach to the water gate at the entrance to Lake Padre. The city has

New booth Passes can be purchased online for an additional service fee of $10 or at any of the parks without the extra charge. Passes also can be purchased through the mail, though applications must be postmarked by Aug. 27 to secure the $10 price. The park service has offered the lifetime senior pass for $10 since 1994. It covers all entrance, dayuse and vehicle fees, and provides discounts for things such as tours and campsites. At a site that charges perperson fees, pass holders can bring along three other adults for free. Seniors can still opt to buy an annual pass for $20. Those who purchase an annual pass for four straight years can convert their pass to a lifetime senior pass.

On August, 28, the cost of a lifetime pass to the national parks for those 62 and older will jump from $10 to $80. So if you are 62 years old get your lifetime pass before August 28 and you can access the more than 2,000 sites and parks across the country that are managed by the National Park Service. Those who purchase the passes before Aug. 27 will never have to pay an additional fee to visit any of the national parks, according to the NPS.

Sneak Peak

But other than the owls and the coyotes everything is pretty good around here as we pass the middle of the 100 Day Tourist Season so we got that going for us. Our story here last week on the shallow water in the mouth of Packery Channel prompted several responses from readers. We first reported several weeks ago that a boater had both propellers on his boat damaged and the fiberglass hull caved in when he hit bottom about 300 feet from the mouth of the channel. It was the latest in a series of reports from boaters who have been reporting for about four years that the water depth in the channel was treacherously low. Then we reported last week that a subcommittee from the Island Strategic Action Committee toured the entire channel and found that it is about seven feet deep throughout when the designed depth is ten feet. Further, the last 600 feet of the channel as you approach the Gulf is 4-5 feet and boaters caught on the downside of a swell, like the one whose boat was damaged, are hitting bottom. The problem is that neither of the last two dredging projects in the channel touched the sand in the

Baffin Bay – So Near But So Far Out

Fish kill prompts study. Next Public Meeting August 8 For local fishermen Baffin Bay is a well-known spot and artifacts found around the bay indicate it has been a favorite place for humans for hundreds or even thousands of years. The story is that the naming of Baffin Bay was more or less a joke. Captain Millfin Kenedy had traveled to Baffin Bay between Canada and Greenland and saw the South Texas bay as such an opposite of that Arctic bay that he penned it with that same name. In the late 1940s geologist Armstrong Price reported the finding of a Mesoamerican-style figurine and a stone gorget with an eroded human burial near the mouth of Baffin Bay. In the 1950s marine biologists

observed oyster shell middens (camp sites) at several sites along the shores of Baffin Bay and reasoned that these must represent use of the area during a wetter period before the modern, hypersaline bay formed. This narrow bay 70 miles south of Corpus Christi forms the boundary between the arid lower Texas coast and the better-watered central Texas coast. Its distinctive three-fingered shape reflects the bay’s formation, which ended about 12,000 years ago, was formed between the upper part of a small river valley that drained into the Gulf of Mexico over 30 miles to the east of the modern shoreline. About 6000 years ago the valley

The northwestern extension, Cayo del Grullo (Grullo Bay), is fed by San Fernando Creek. The smallest finger, Laguna Salada, points westward and is fed by Los Olmos creek. The light-colored clay dunes and mud flats lining upper Alazan and Grullo Bays are clearly visible.

Thomas and Erica Beckett were awarded yard of the month for July by the Island Gardeners. They live on a rarely traveled cul-de-sac off of Dasmarinas. The address to look for is 14018 Rudder. The Becketts made the most of their pie shaped lot. An array of palms, potted plants, decorative rocks and shells make a very appealing street view. Continuing to the back following more beautiful pots a welcoming swimming pool greets you. A cute fenced in area is dedicated to fruit trees and vegetables. One papaya tree has become several simply from planting seeds from one fruit. If you stop by to see this home I'm sure Erica will offer you a papaya tree to take home. She may even share with you where she buys her beautiful pots. Please make suggestions for yard of the month to The Island Gardeners at 361-563-0951 or email to dlgimpel@yahoo.com

Blowing Sand The proper way to stop the blowing sand is to cover the sand with soil mixed with lime rolled and compacter with water. Now the development is installing water sprinkler systems to hold the sand down. I would bet that salt water will not be used and our precious fresh water will be used instead? We lowly home owners are being asked to conserve water but not developers. I have seen many projects use precious water to compact foundations instead of using the more machinery. Nobody seems to care about water usage until it is almost gone. Scott Nichols

If you don’t mind, I would like to share your original email as well as my responses below with the Island Moon in order to curtail this misinformation and undermining of the Padre Isles Property Owners Association. Please let me know at your earliest convenience if you are agreeable. Please see my responses below and noted by DBM – Response. Sincerely, Brent Moore – President/PIPOA To: Brent Moore, PIPOA President Subject: POA Board Meetings Hello Mr. Moore. I hope you are well. There is a story going around the island that if there are more people than seats at the board meetings, people will not be allowed to stand near the back, that you must be seated to attend and listen to the meeting. If that is true, I assume the Board will make sure there is a seat for everyone so nobody who pays dues to the POA is turned away from listening to their Board. DBM – The above rumor is 100% false. I encourage you to contact the person(s) who provided you with the misinformation and let them know they are providing incorrect and misleading information. Also, is it necessary to have a police officer in attendance? DBM – There have been several instances where both homeowners and the board have, both verbally and in writing, indicated they felt physically threatened during some previous meetings. The safety of our residents and those who serve the POA (staff, board, volunteers, etc.) is of high concern and the Board took action about a year and a half ago to hire officers to attend future meetings.

In fact, it is our belief the CCPD is here to protect and serve the community. In fact, many residents have asked for their increased presence in our neighborhoods; something we believe would also benefit the community. I thought I would ask you right away before these two additional comments start simmering and build up steam. Thanks. DBM – Thank you Sue. Brush Battles Dear Editor, When the solid waste department made their last pickup on the Island, they failed to pick up on a section of Coquina Bay Ave. I have made four phone calls to the city, and two calls to the POA, with no results. On one of the calls I was promised pickup in 3 days. On another call I was told Mr. Molina from the city would call me back. Neither happened. The brush has been there since June 28th. Governance of the Padre Isles This is the first of a series of “essays” about the Governance of Padre Isles, a marina type community composed of approximately thirty-five individual subdivisions and related developments. I write because next spring, on the second Saturday in March, we property owners will vote for three seats on the Padre Isles Property Owners Association (“PIPOA”) Board of Directors. The size and complexity of the matters governed by the PIPOA Board (the “Board”) has increased in the last several years because North Padre Island has experienced a period of substantial growth. A wise voter is an informed voter. To be informed, a voter ought to understand the basic mission of the PIPOA and also understand the fundamental rules within which the PIPOA and the Board are required to operate. It is only by knowing how things should have worked that a voter can judge how well the PIPOA and Board did their work. Therefore, these essays will discuss what the rules are and also report about how well the members of the Board have performed those duties. Also discussed, will be the qualifications of candidates for the three year term Board seats. I’ve lived here seventeen years since retiring from the practice of law and have become involved in studying the pertinent rules, regulations, and laws--sometimes at the request of the Board, sometimes at the request of property owners, and often because I want to know to what standards the Board should fairly be held. I want to be clear: no power on earth could induce me to run for any election for any position and I will certainly never be a candidate for the Board. The Baseline: To judge performance, we have to understand the baseline of rules the Board is supposed to follow. These essentially consist of 1) The Articles of Incorporation of the PIPOA, 2) The Protective Covenants and Landowners’ Agreements (the “Covenants”), 3) The PIPOA Bylaws, 4) The Policies and Procedures of the Architectural Control Committee (“ACC”), and 5) Pertinent Texas Statutes. 1. Articles of Incorporation (1976): These simply create the PIPOA as a Texas nonprofit corporation and provide for the Board of Directors. There are certain Texas corporate law statutes and case decisions that might apply, depending on where our discussion leads. 2. Covenants: In 1981, through a series of conveyances and related agreements, the land comprising the development which was then owned by Padre Island Investment Corporation and Padre Island Investment Corporation, Trustee was transferred to the PIPOA and the PIPOA assumed ownership of the land as well as trustee obligations over certain property, primarily the pool of funds already held in trust for acquisition and maintenance of common areas. We sometimes refer to these as “dues.” All subdivisions and all property owners are obligated to follow these Covenants and to adhere to the Landowners’ Agreements contained within the Covenants. Your agreement to this was part of your closing process. The Covenants can be thought of as comparable the U.S. Constitution in the sense that these are the fundamental documents that bind all of us, including the Board, and which cannot be changed by the Board. Nor can the Board

take any action or impose any process upon any property owner that is inconsistent with the Covenants. The Covenants can be amended by a vote of 51% of the lot owners in any particular subdivision, and in no other manner. 3. Bylaws: The Bylaws also bind both the property owners and the Board, but the Bylaws cannot violate any rule of the Covenants. The Bylaws which are intended to refine and flesh out operational rules, can be amended according to a process I will discuss later on and also by a vote of the Board, a point I will also focus on later. 4. Policies and Procedures: The Covenants create an Architectural Control Committee (“ACC”), which is appointed by the Board, and its primary purpose is to watch over and control construction and maintenance standards for the community. The ACC has a publication named Policy and Procedures Guide and Construction Standards. Copies of all the above-mentioned documents are available on the PIPOA website at http:// padreislespoa.net/ look under “Building Info Forms” and “Property Owners Info.” 5) State Laws: The most pertinent State laws are Chapters 202 and 209 of the Texas Property Code. Chapter 202 is titled “Construction and Enforcement of Restrictive Covenants,” and Chapter 209 is titled Texas Residential Property Owners Protection Act. Both of these statutes, Chapter 209 in particular, affirm important property owner rights and PIPOA duties and I will be referring to these as the discussion progresses. (If you google, these laws will appear for your reading pleasure.) The foregoing documents and laws form the essential rules under we are all supposed to operate. Over the last eighteen months or so, there has been substantial dispute between the Board and property owners as to the proper application of these rules and as to the Board’s proper functions, meaning both its duties and the limitations upon its authority. These issues will form the basic positions upon which the next Board Election will be decided and about which the candidates will debate. Future essays will delve into these issues, discussing both pro and con viewpoints, as expressed by property owners and other residents as well as the members of the Board. I hope this will be useful. Karl Rubinstein - Island resident

growth, increased bacteria growth, and reduced dissolved oxygen levels has led to “deteriorated” water quality in the bay and that given the sensitivity of the system to nutrient inputs solutions are needed.

bottom of the last 600 feet of the channel near the mouth. The plug there catches sand. The good news is that Island City Councilman Greg Smith, after listening to a briefing on the problem at the ISAC meeting last week, instructed the city staff to begin the paperwork to launch a dredging project there as soon as possible. The matter will likely be on the agenda for a meeting of the board of the Tax Increment Financing Zone set for August. That board, made up primarily of city council members, has the authority to spend money from the TRZ account earmarked to pay for dredging. It looks like there is a solution in sight. In the meantime look out for the Skinny Water and say hello if you see us Around The Island.

History cont. from A1 flooded as sea level rose and an ancestral Baffin Bay formed in which oysters and other shellfish thrived. But by about 3,000 years ago the extensive barrier island known today as Padre Island had formed cutting off Baffin Bay’s direct access to the Gulf. The bay filled with sediment and its shallow waters became hypersaline and less productive for many species (except certain fin fish) than any of Texas’ other bays, a condition which helps explain its prehistoric record.

Jump forward to 2012

The study found that the opening of Yarborough Pass in the 1940s barely decreased salinity levels in the bay and that chlorophyll levels continue to increase despite the opening of the ICW.

Conclusions/solutions Two views of “cloud blower” stone pipe found at the “Indian Hill” site overlooking Cayo del Grullo in the mid1930s by an amateur archeologist, Clyde Reed. Reed reported that he dug up 22 skeletons from single- and multipleinterment graves. According to Reed, the pipe “contained about 250 c.c. of coarse bitumen and ashes” which he believed meant that it was a “fire making device.” . The mouthpiece is a polished and heatdarkened bone tube about five centimeters in length which was later identified as a section of a human arm bone. Source: Bulletin of the Texas Archeological and Paleontological Society. miles of relatively shallow water with high evaporation rates. Six square miles of Baffin Bay is covered with Serpulid Reefs. Recorded salinities have exceeded 100 parts per thousand. Normal seawater is 35 parts per thousand.

The Early Years of Learning Baffin 1985-2000 The Laguna Madre and Baffin Bay, in particular, was home to what is believed to be the longest continual algal bloom in history, from 1990-1997. Initiated by drought (1988-89) and fueled by a massive freeze kill (1989) of fish “Brown Tide” has continued to occur sporadically ever since causing loss of seagrass by shading.

New lessons from Baffin Bay – 2010 – 2016

The study found several solutions, some possible, some not. For instance, the best solution would be lowering of water temperatures to historical levels, but given that the earth climate is warming that is not a likely possibility. Increased freshwater flushing would help but is dependent on freshwater inflows from creeks and rivers, however, this is dependent on increased rainfall.

Packery Channel Park is the only large space legally open to the public along Packery Channel inside the bridge.

Studies so far have found the highest impact of the changing water conditions in Baffin Bay has been to Black Drum which suffered a die-off in 2012 which was found to be due to a decline in their food source die to high salinity and low levels of dissolved oxygen. Black Drum feed on a number of lower level consumers which themselves depend on either pelagic (bivalves) or benthic (gastropods, polychaetes) production. If shifts in food resources are responsible for Black Drum emaciation events, likely problems with both benthic and pelagic food resources estuary -scale disturbances (water quality perturbations?) are likely affecting the whole system, with indirect effects on Black Drum.

The parking lot and cabanas on the north side of Packery Channel are open to the public but little used.

Ongoing changes in water quality are occurring throughout Baffin Bay, making it important to continue monitoring food web dynamics. The eventual goal is a numerical model that explicitly links water quality dynamics and estuarine resources. It is with that goal in mind that the meeting for August 20 is set with the ultimate goal of developing a watershed protection plan for Baffin Bay. Dale Rankin

City crews have recently leveled the road along the south side of Packery Channel making it more accessible to the public.

Greenstone figurine reportedly found by a man working for geologist Armstrong Price in 1947 near the mouth of Baffin Bay along with a polished stone gorget similar to those found in Adena sites. Alex Krieger asked leading Mesoamerican scholars of the day including Matthew W. Stirling of the Smithsonian Institution to examine the figurine. They noted that it was quite similar to those found at La Venta and other Olmec sites and was most likely made in Guerrero, the source of the serpentine the figurine is made of. Source: texasbeyondhistory.net In 2012 a fish kill in Baffin Bay prompted a series of studies to determine the cause, and if needed, a cure. There will be a public hearing concerning the ecology of Baffin Bay Study on Tuesday, August 8, 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Kaufer-Hubert Memorial Park, in Rivera that is the latest in a series of studies prompted by the fish kill. The Baffin Bay Study Group was formed by the local community to bring together scientist, natural resource managers, guides, and other bay users to support interests in resolving Baffin Bay water quality and biological productivity concerns. The first meeting of the group was held on August 2, 2012, in response to fish kills that occurred around the mouth of Baffin Bay where it meets the Upper Laguna Madre. Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program, Texas Parks & Wildlife Department, Texas A&M University – Corpus Christi, and the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies gathered together to discuss the fish kills, water quality problems, and food web changes in the bay. Since the first meeting, the group has grown to include not only researchers and state agencies, but commercial fisherman, recreational fisherman, hotel/B&B owners, citizens living on Baffin Bay, ranchers, business owners, federal and local agencies, and other interested stakeholders. The group meets roughly every 3 to 4 months to discuss issues related to Baffin Bay, ongoing research, planned projects, and ways to help fund these initiatives. The groups charge is to identify the issues in Baffin Bay, characterize the problems, and develop solutions. By bringing stakeholders together to communicate about water quality and biological productivity in Baffin Bay, we ensure a collaborative effort and keep everyone on the same page as to the direction that research and management decisions are being made.

Baffin Facts Dr. Larry McKinney made a presentation at a previous meeting of the Baffin Bay study group. Here are some keys facts. Baffin Bay is an Extreme Environment, on the fringe of “normal” due to limited freshwater inflow. Baffin Bay consists of 100 square

a 300-foot wide easement from the south jetty to wooden bollards marking the boundary of private property. The city leases the land from the Texas General Land Office and District 4 City Councilman Greg Smith this week said he is pushing to make improvements there to allow for better public access and amenities in the future.

Human bone “tubes” from the Pescador site on Cayo del Grullo. They were found on the surface of an eroded cemetery site, and doubtlessly represent grave goods. Perhaps some were strung as beads, but most are rather large for that purpose. The artifacts shown here were made from long bones including femur, tibia, fibula, and radius as well rib bones. They were fashioned by the cut and snap technique. One is decorated with a zig-zag pattern of incised lines highlighted by red ochre; on the opposite side are closely spaced parallel lines like those found on musical rasps. Source: TARL Archives. In 2012, a large percentage of adult black drum that were commercially caught had to be discarded due to flesh with a "jellylike" consistency. Water Quality concerns for increased Hypoxia (fish kills) and nutrient increases (Eutrophication) led to the genesis of the current study. The “brown tide” of Baffin Bay changed the trajectory of Texas Parks & Wildlife’s PWD fisheries management from a focus on species to ecosystems.

What is driving long-term increases in chlorophyll and dense, prolonged brown tide blooms? According to a study by Michael Wetz, Emily Cira, and Kenneth Hayes at Texas A&M University Corpus Christi the amount of chlorophyll in Baffin Bay has increased twofold since the 1975. The reason, they found, is that the bay is poorly flushed and retains and recycles nutrients and is sensitive to external inputs. Factors affecting algal growth include: Salinity since high salinity favors brown tide; salinity has decreaseddramatically since the opening of the Intracoastal Waterway, however Benthic filter feeders have experienced dieoffs leading to algal blooms. Water temperature in the bay, and all along the Texas Coast, has increased greatly since 1975.

“Think of Roberts Point Park in Port Aransas,” Smith said, referring to the open green space and pavilion adjacent to the ship channel and ferry landings there. “That area gets a lot of use by the public and this space along the Packery could be the same for us on Padre.” When Packery Channel was approved by voters in 2000 one of the tenets in the subsequent agreement in the digging of the channel ceded control of the 300-foot easement to the city. Over the years plans and development along the channel focused attention on the area north of the channel with little thought, until now, being given to the south side easement accessed previously by a rut-filled, deep sand roadway accessible only by four-wheel drive vehicles. But as public access along the banks of the channel have come under pressure due to plans by private owners the south side area is now being seen as a way to increase access.

The area on the Packery Channel side of the water gate into Lake Padre is part of the publicly accessible city controlled land.

The land inside the water gate is privately owned.

Work has begun on the retail/commercial site east of the Aquarius/SPID intersection. The developer of the project has said plans call for retail shops and a 105-room motel.

These wooden bollards adjacent to the water gate mark the boundary between public and private property.

Nitrogen While inorganic nitrogen is generally low in surface waters, dissolved organic nitrogen is very high in Baffin Bay. The external sources of nitrogen include fertilizer runoff from nearby agricultural fields, manure from nearly pastureland, and wastewater runoff from urban areas. A study by the U.S. Geological Society found that most of the nitrogen running into the bay from Petronilla Creek came from crop residue. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality found very high algae levels in Petronilla Creek which often flushed into the bay. The study found increasing chlorophyll and nitrogen levels which along with increasing temperatures enhance algae

The current work at the site does not block public access to the privately-owned land behind it along Packery Channel, however, future development will likely block public access.

This open space along the channel marks the western boundary of the public space.

The narrow easements along both sides of Packery Channel at the State Highway 361 Bridge are the last place the public can fish without trespassing.

This entire 300-foot wide area is city controlled property and could be used for public parkland along the south side of the channel from the beach to the entrance to Lake Padre.

Public access to this area on the south bank of Packery Channel near the bridge were recently made off limits to the public by the property owners due to excessive littering.

These unused concrete slabs built for use on the Packery Jetties but never installed could be used as part of the public access area.

Stuff I Heard on the Island Way back in the 1960s my now gone friend Chris Holtzhaus answered a classified advertisement in the San Antonio Express-News for a guitar player. He soon found himself in Port Aransas rehearsing for an upcoming record by the madefor-television group The Monkees. It turned out one of the producers was from Corpus Christi and since the members of the group didn’t actually know how to play the instruments somebody had to do it and as it turned out those somebodies retired to a motel in Port Aransas and played in the only local music venue in town at that time. It was there, according to Chris’ story that the song Last Train to Clarksville was written after the coming album came up one song short.

I was reminded of all of this Saturday night when I went to Port Aransas to shoot a story on the music scene in Port Aransas for KIII television. Being an old married guy my soirees to Port Aransas these days are usually over well before sunset in the summer months. I leave before the kids show up. But much to my surprise the headlining bands in Port A last Saturday didn’t even take the stage until around ten o’clock. The two biggest drawing acts in town – Mickey and the Motorcars at Treasure Island, and the Dirty River Boys at the Back Porch – had opening acts that played early. Maybe it is my early hours but that is the first time I can remember opening acts at Port A gigs and usually the bands kick it off by nine and are taillights over the curb by midnight. Not so this summer season.

Music Mecca It seems that in my absence the music scene in Port Aransas has grown up. There are now about a dozen live music venue in town and they are frequented by touring acts from across the Laguna, most from the Austin-San AntonioHouston areas, but in one case arriving by sailboat and leaving the same way. We owe the genesis of the music scene in Port Aransas to the recently retired manager of the Back Porch Susan Powell who long ago owned the Ballyhoo Club on the south end of town before moving to the old Tortuga Flats located at the current spot of Virginia’s. The Salty Dog had some live music in those days – the 1980-

1990s – as I recall, but that was about it for live music in Port A. Sharky’s on the south side of town also had some live music in the early aughts but live music venues were few and far between. By the time I moved back to town in 2000 the Back Porch was in full swing. Susan brought in bands from up state and it was there, at least as far as I recall, that what has blossomed into the kinetic scene we have today began. These days Shorty’s, Giggity’s, Behringer’s, the Tarpon Inn, and others all feature regular live music. On Saturday our longtime friends the Toman Brothers from San Antonio played to a packed house at Giggity’s and Shorty’s was full as well for Ruben Limas and his band. I was a little taken aback at how much music there was in town last Saturday and especially the size of the crowds. I read about it each week in Ronnie’s music column in these pages but until I saw it for myself I didn’t quite get the full measure of what is happening there. I think that Ronnie’s column has been a big part of the catalyst for that, as it brings attention to what is going on not only to the public but to working bands. Ronnie’s phone and e-mail are kept busy every week from bands looking for a gig in Port A and Ray Summy, who has been running sound for bands there since the 1990s and who is known far and wide as The Hardest Working Man in Show Business, says that touring bands now like to come down to do shows and work out new material as well as pick up a paying gig. Port A music is on the map. I’m here to tell you that the selection of music in Port Aransas, with the exception of the big rooms that hold thousands, on any given weekend is as good in Port Aransas as in San Antonio and much better than in the remainder of Corpus Christ put together. We’re not Austin but there is a good cadre of local working bands and solo artists who make a living working The Island. There has yet to emerge an “Island Sound” that defines the music of our time and place, but the way things are going it will come. I’ll be back at Treasure Island this Saturday for Statesboro Review and will make the rounds. I’m looking forward to it and I can’t help but wonder what my old friend Chris would think. He was hard on bass players but he loved playing live music and I got to believe he would love it. I was impressed.

Jessica Lynch POW (Prisoner of War) On April 1, 2003, U.S. Army Private Jessica Lynch, a prisoner-of-war who was rescued from an Iraqi hospital, received a hero’s welcome when she returns to her hometown of Palestine, West Virginia. The story of the 19-year-old supply clerk, who was captured by Iraqi forces in March 2003, gripped America; however, it was later revealed that some details of Lynch’s dramatic capture and rescue might have been exaggerated.

Rescued

Anecdotingly

Lynch doesn't have many shoe options. When the Iraqis ambushed the supply convoy carrying her and other soldiers in March 2003, her legs and feet were crushed. She has had 22 surgeries, most of them on her lower extremities. A brace runs down her left calf, immobilizing her ankle and forcing her to walk on the side of her foot. That puts enormous pressure on her joints. Her next surgery probably will be a knee replacement. She has only dull feeling in the leg with the brace. Looking down to adjust a pad in her shoe, she notices a deep blister above her heel. She can't feel it, but she doesn't want it to get worse.

"Remind me to get something on that." It's a little after 11 a.m. at Mountain River Physical Therapy. Lynch is ready to finish her second session of the week with Jodie Guthrie. For years, they tested Lynch's breaking point, eight hours a day, five days a week. During the ambush that claimed 11 soldiers, her back was broken in two places. Her arms and legs were smashed. The Iraqis pulled her unconscious from a wrecked Humvee and, she said, took her to one of Saddam Hussein's palaces and sexually assaulted her. An Army report substantiates the rape, Lynch said, but because she wasn't conscious, she doesn't remember the assault.

Last Sunday, I had to make an emergency call to the G.P. “Dad, that stupid tree on the fence line has collapsed and now there’s a brush tunnel that looks like it goes to a magical fairy land, but is just really scratchy and leads to the overgrown weeds in the easement. We’ve got to cut it down.” I knew what it was like in the tunnel because I thought it would be cool to make it into a fort where I could read books, drink lemonade and eat peanut butter cookies. This theory proved false when I was attacked by red ants and got slashed to pieces by pokey branches. Plus, I nearly lost an eye. The only way I’m wearing an eye patch is if it’s a part of my pirate outfit. Or, like, if I get a sty. In any case, “attacked by tree” is not a valid reason to become a Cyclops.

Lynch, who was born April 26, 1983, was part of the 507th Ordnance Maintenance Company from Fort Bliss, Texas. On March 23, 2003, just days after the U.S. invaded Iraq, Lynch was riding in a supply convoy when her unit took a wrong turn and was ambushed by Iraqi forces near Nasiriya. Eleven American soldiers died and four others besides Lynch were captured.

At night the Iraqi men come again for Jessica Lynch. They chase her through the woods. The crunching of the earth beneath their boots drowns out her pounding breath. She turns but can't see their faces. Before they grab her, she wakes up. The nightmare has never changed over 12 years. The woman made famous for being a prisoner of war would give anything for it to stop.”

Lynch, who sustained multiple broken bones and other injuries when her vehicle crashed during the ambush, was taken to an Iraqi hospital. On April 1, she was rescued by U.S. Special Forces who raided the hospital where she was being held. They also recovered the bodies of eight of Lynch’s fellow soldiers. Lynch was taken to a military hospital in Germany for treatment and then returned to the United States. Lynch’s story garnered massive media attention and she became an overnight celebrity. Various reports emerged about Lynch’s experience, with some news accounts indicating that even after Lynch was wounded during the ambush she fought back against her captors. However, Lynch later stated that she had been knocked unconscious after her vehicle crashed and couldn’t remember the details of what had happened to her. She also said she had not been mistreated by the staff at the Iraqi hospital and they put up no resistance to her rescue. Critics– and Lynch herself–charged the U.S. government with embellishing her story to boost patriotism and help promote the Iraq war.

“Can you bring that pole thing with the saw on the end over? I’ll just cut the bad limbs off.” It was actually a nice day. The overcast sky had mitigated the big burn of summer, and it looked like it might rain. Dad agreed to come over, noting that if I was going to mess with cutting down a tree, wearing some head protection would be smart. Frankly, that’s always a good idea. I once knocked myself out in a Holiday Inn swimming pool on New Year’s Eve by swimming directly into one of the sides. I inhaled a little water, which caused me to wake up and surface to all my friends laughing hysterically at my spluttering. I tried to pretend I hadn’t almost killed myself, but no one bought it due to a forehead dent, and they cut me off (booze-wise), and also wouldn’t let me go to sleep. I had to sit around bored (and very damp) until 9 a.m. when I then had to drive everyone home. It wasn’t my worst New Year’s. Still, you understand why people are always suggesting I wear helmets.

In August 2003, Lynch received a medical honorable discharge. She collaborated on a book about her experience, I Am a Soldier, Too: The Jessica Lynch Story, which was released later that year. In April 2007, Lynch testified before Congress that she had falsely been portrayed as a “little girl Rambo” and the U.S. military had hyped her story for propaganda reasons. According to Lynch: “I am still confused as to why they chose to lie and tried to make me a legend when the real heroics of my fellow soldiers that day were, in fact, legendary.” She added: “The truth of war is not always easy to hear but is always more heroic than the hype.” For a CNN article in July 2015 for “Rewind, Where are They Now?” interviewer/writer Ashley Fantz caught up with Jessica Lynch and reports the following: “When PFC Jessica Lynch’s supply convoy took a wrong turn in Iraq and was ambushed on March 23, 2003, U.S. Special Forces rescued her from an Iraqi hospital in Nasiriyah eight days later -- all part of an ordeal that turned her, unexpectedly, into an overnight heroine and one of the most recognizable faces of the Iraq War. Lynch who now resides in Elizabeth, West Virginia, is raising a daughter, is a substitute teacher, gives motivational talks and stars in Christian-themed movies. The 8-year-old is in tow with her mom this day. She's usually part of the story, the embodiment of Lynch's

"I try to dream about peaceful things, beaches," Lynch said. "That is what I cannot understand. Why are they chasing me?" It's a rainy June day and Lynch has awoken with more than the few hours of sleep she normally gets. She's standing outside the courthouse in Elizabeth, West Virginia, her tiny hometown. When the sun breaks through for a moment, she said, "You have to put a smile on! Today will be a good day."

Pouting, I started my descent. I have always loved climbing trees, and the ancient one in question was particularly good with lots of sturdy branches and hand holds. In fact, this was the tree I had once drunkenly designated as the one in which I would build a treehouse so that my friends would have a place to stay when they totally messed up their lives – but not a very nice one, so they would leave.

I leapt off the fence and started looking for something to do, just as the branch the G.P. was working on cracked in two. I grabbed the leafy end and started pulling it out of the tunnel, intent on hauling it off to the brush pile. It fell from the tree with a loud crack – and wonked my father right in the face. The world slows down dramatically when you’re sure you’re going to get killed. I swear there were about three days of time in between Dad cussing and then spitting blood, and me managing to speak. In that eternity, I was wrenched through a grist mill of guilt. “Dad, I’m sorry!” I finally managed. “Are you okay?” My father spat again and returned to his sawing. His righteous anger rolled towards me in waves. But he said nothing. I began to very carefully haul more branches to the pile that was beginning to resemble deadfall from a Stephen King story. Dad sawed, and the stack and the silence grew ever thicker, punctuated only by the G.P.’s occasional genteel expulsion of bloody spit. Finally, I couldn’t take it anymore. We’d eradicated the tunnel, and the remains were ready to be hauled off by the city. The only work left was more for finish than function. “That’s good enough, Pops. Let’s quit.” offered, brokering a fragile peace.

I knew from bitter experience working with Dad, that I’d better be well into the job before he got to my house, so I grabbed my big loppers and started cutting the branches that I could, hauling them to the curb. I had a decent pile going by the time the G.P. pulled up.

I said something about smaller pieces being easier to drag, which was an acceptable platitude. Dad got to work with the pole saw, trying to cut through the broken-yet-still-thick branches that had created the tunnel. My theory was that I’d only need to saw the limbs about two-thirds of the way through, and then I’d climb up in the tree and stomp on them to finish the job. I was on the top of the fence climbing into the big oak when Dad nixed this idea. “What the hell are you doing now?” Dad

“Okay,” I replied, still in shock that he hadn’t turned me into emotional mush, yet. The branch fell and I lugged it to the pile. Dad took a sip of iced tea from his Yeti, as he loaded his saw into the back of his truck. “This whole tree is a mess, Ab. It’s going to have to come down. We can either pay someone $500 bucks to do it, or I suppose I could just buy a really good chainsaw.” “Why don’t you just get the chainsaw, Dad. The city comes out again in October. We’ll cut it down in September, and I’ll just work on rolling all the bits out to the ditch for a whole month. I’m sure I can get it done.” My father scoffed, got into his truck and drove away. I’m still not sure what the verdict is. I’m pretty sure Dad is never going to cut anything down with me ever again. That’s okay. I really like my tree.

Craving Some Asian Flavors

Flocking Craze Hits Padre Island

thousand dollars and the equipment is estimated to cost just over fifty one thousand dollars.

By Chef Vita Jarrin It's so easy, as I've said before, for any and all of us to slip into a rut when it comes to what we are fixing at home. The same things in the pantry, the same spices, and when we look around to figure out what to make we find ourselves saying, "No, I'm really in the mood for " Hey, it happens to me too. This week I was having a craving for Asian flavors. When one of my daughters commented that she was craving some Chinese food, I figured I'd better get busy and take care of our collectively growing need for some Asian flair.

Any person or business that donates $500 or more will get name listed under the special thank you section of the permanent sign. If you would like to flock someone or just donate to the park improvements you can contact Jennifer at 816-547-1444

1/2 teaspoon grated fresh ginger 6 ounces cabbage (about 1/4 head), sliced thin 2 medium carrots, peeled and coarsely grated 1/8 teaspoon granulated sugar Freshly ground black pepper 20 egg roll wrappers 1 egg and a tablespoon of water, mixed together for sealing Place the ground pork in a mixing bowl and add 1/2 tablespoon of the soy sauce, 1/2 tablespoon of the rice wine, and all of the sesame oil. Mix well and set aside to marinate at least 10 minutes.

You may have noticed yards around Padre Island full of plastic flamingos lately. It’s not a new decorating craze but a fundraiser for a new playground at Billish Park. The fundraiser was started by Jennifer Seymour who has been raising funds for improvements to the park since 2014. So far, they have raised over forty one

Heat the oil in a wok or large nonstick sauté pan over high heat. Add the marinated pork and cook, stirring constantly, until the meat shows no traces of pink, about 5 minutes. Crews Work at Windward

Personally, I'm a fan of egg rolls. Think about it, they can have all sorts of things rolled up inside them. You can use chicken, beef, pork, shrimp, tofu, or even just vegetables. And though the outside texture would be different, egg rolls can be baked rather than fried. (Surprisingly the calorie count isn't that different between the two). So if you're going to fry, choose your fat according to what you like and can use: peanut oil, vegetable oil, olive oil, etc. They can also be pan-fried rather than deep-fried. The process really isn't that hard, and rolling them up just takes a little practice. This is certainly something that can be done with family members. You could even let each person choose their own fillings. I'm including a basic recipe for egg rolls to get you started.

Ingredients: 1/2-pound ground pork (or beef or thinly sliced chicken or shrimp) 1 1/4 tablespoons soy sauce 1 tablespoon Chinese rice wine 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil 2 tablespoons peanut or canola oil, plus up to 1 quart more for frying 1 clove garlic, minced

To fry the egg rolls, fill a wok or deep-sided Dutch oven with 2 inches of oil. Heat the oil to 350°F, using a deep-fry thermometer to help keep the oil at a constant temperature (if the oil cools too much between batches, you’ll end up with greasy egg rolls). Gently slide in or lower about 1/4 of the egg rolls (it’s best to wear long sleeves, to avoid burns from possible splatters), turning occasionally until golden brown about 2 minutes.

Tip of the week! If you have too many or you want to make these in advance, they can be kept (uncooked) in a sealing plastic bag in the freezer for a week or so. The important thing is to Have Fun! Try New Things! Happy Eats… Enjoy!

That's a Big Un'!

Crews have been at work this week to firm up the sand around the beach access road at the end of Windward. Drivers have found themselves stuck in the soft sand around the road which was rebuilt early this year.

Adding to McGregor's challenge, the fighters will be using 10-ounce boxing gloves instead of the smaller UFC gloves and he will not be allowed to use the leg kicks or takedowns that are used in mixed martial arts. McGregor will weigh in at 154 pounds, UFC president Dana White told ESPN.

What Are The Odds? Bookies immediately predicted a Mayweather win. William Hill put the veteran fighter at 1/11 favorite. Odds maker Nick Bogdanovich said the odds would be even more lopsided if it wasn't for the deluge of small bets expected to come in from UFC fans on their fighter.

We Were the First By Andy Purvis Special to the Island Moon Nineteen Sixty-Three was a very memorable year in the world of sports. Wilt Chamberlain dropped 67 points on the Lakers and then 70 the following week on Syracuse. “Sonny” Liston knocked out Floyd Patterson in the 1st round to win the heavyweight title, and Jack Nicklaus won “The Masters.” A young Pete Rose debuted for the Cincinnati Reds, and both Mickey Mantle and Willie Mays signed the first $100,000 a year contracts in Major League baseball history. The great Jim Brown won the Bert Bell Award by setting the NFL singleseason rushing record with 1,863 yards; the Dallas Texans became the Kansas City Chiefs; and Jim Thorpe, “Red” Grange, George Halas were elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Bob Cousy and Stan Musial retired, and the College All-Stars beat the Green Bay Packers 20-17.

Hix Green #47 blocks for Duke Carlisle as Darrell Royal looks on. There has been what feels like years of speculation about the fight, with much namecalling on both sides. But the two fighters have announced that it is indeed, on. That's right, a boxer with a 49-0 record facing a man who has never taken part in a professional boxing fight.

"Realistically if we were just putting up a number and didn't have to take bets on it, Floyd would be 1/100," Bogdanovich said. "But this will be a very, very big betting fight for sure, one of the biggest ever."

What Date Is The Fight And At What Time?

Floyd Mayweather Jr., at a stop of a fourcity media tour promoting the fight, told the 20,000-strong crowd in Los Angeles: "I don't care if it's a ring or it's an octagon, I will kick ass. I don't back down for anybody. "You line them up and I will knock them down. On August 26, I'm gonna knock this b**** out too."

The fight is happening on Saturday 26 August. While the times haven't been announced, it will certainly be a late night or very early start for viewers in the UK, so expect to be up well into Sunday 27 August, and possibly calling in sick on Monday 28.

Where Is The Fight Taking Place? The bout will be housed in the T-Mobile arena on the Las Vegas Strip in Nevada. The venue has held major fights in the past, including UFC 202, in which McGregor beat Nate Diaz on points.

How can I watch it on TV? Details are still to be confirmed but the fight will be a pay-per-view event, organized by Showtime Sports. The price has not been decided, though it is expected to be at or near the $99.95 charged for Mayweather's 2015 fight with Manny Pacquiao that drew a record 4.4 million pay-per-view buys. "This is really an unprecedented event," said Stephen Espinoza, who heads Showtime Sports. "Really we haven't seen anything in modern history that resembles it, it's impossible to predict how many sales this will do."

What Are Their Fighting Records? Mayweather retired in 2015 with an unblemished 49-0 professional boxing record. He is widely regarded as one of the best defensive fighters ever, and prides himself on his ability to evade punishment with his skilful movement about the ring while making adjustments against opponents on the fly. A win for Mayweather would move him ahead of former heavyweight great Rocky Marciano,

What Have They Said?

McGregor retorted: "You haven't knocked anyone out in about 20 years.” Mayweather added: "We talking about from the nineties to now, world champion 18 years, but it is no problem. I'm not the same fighter as I was years ago, but I got enough to beat you. "You will wave that white flag. You are going out on your face or your back. Which way do you want to go? All you need to do is show up and I will do the rest. God only made one thing perfect, and that is my boxing record." Conor McGregor, The Irishman was the crowd favorite at the opening press event as he made fun of Mayweather's IRS troubles - a lack of cash prompted him to file an appeal with the IRS (Internal Revenue Service) regarding overdue taxes - and promised to flatten an aging fighter.

But for the past two seasons, a college football storm had been brewing down in Austin, Texas; and it all started with Head Coach Darrell Royal. The Longhorns’ football team had started the previous two seasons (1961 and 1962) ranked #1 in the nation, only to be turned away at the end. The 1961 team was upset by TCU, and the 1962 team settled for a tie against Rice. The stars seemed to be aligned in 1963, even though the Associated Press ranked the Longhorns #5 at the beginning of the year. Today my friend, Hix Green, gave me a firsthand look at how that 1963 National Championship season unfolded. At 75 years of age, his mind is sharp and his voice educated. Just being around Hix makes me feel ten years old. Smiling constantly, he owns a “We’re going to Disney World” kind of face. Mostly retired now, he looks like he could still play. He seems content until you mention Texas football. His eyes open wide, and the memories come flooding back. As of this writing, the Texas Longhorns have won four National Championships in football: 1963, 1969, 1970 and 2005. “Yeah, but we were the first,” exclaimed Hix. Hix Green, III, was born on July 20, 1942, grew up in San Antonio, Texas, and attended Jefferson High School. Although rather small, Hix made up for his size with quickness, energy, speed and talent. The only thing that could have stopped this guy was a bad case of the flu. Not only was he an outstanding football player, but

Kennedy had planned a trip to Austin to visit Royal, but it was not to be. At 1:00 PM Central Standard Time, the nation stood still; JFK had passed away. “Most of us were on our way to class,” said Hix. “Nobody could believe what was happening. When we got to class, the teacher called it off. I do remember we practiced that day, but it wasn’t very spirited.” Texas Governor, John Connally, had also been shot but survived. Six days later, Texas played Texas A&M at Kyle Field. Hix played an important part in the Longhorns’ win over the Aggies. On an incredibly muddy field, the score stood 13-3 at halftime, in favor of the Aggies. In the fourth quarter, Green recovered a fumble on the Aggies’ side of the field and Tommy Ford later scored for the Longhorns, leaving the score 13-9 in favor of the Aggies. Later in the game, with Texas facing third down and 17 from their own 20-yard line, Green was surprised when a throwback pass was called in the huddle. Hix made the catch of his life for 20 yards, to keep the winning drive alive. Texas later scored and won 15-13, to keep their National Championship hopes alive. Up next would be Heisman Trophy winner, Roger Staubach, and #2 Navy, in the Cotton Bowl. The first-ever Cotton Bowl to host #1 versus #2 was played on January 1, 1964, in Dallas, Texas. Texas played hard and well and stunned Navy 28-6. The Longhorns were crowned #1 in the nation for the first time in the school’s history. The 1964 season started with four straight wins, until Arkansas came to town. The Razorbacks hung on for a 14-13 win over Texas, diminishing the Longhorns’ chances for another National Championship. On November 26, 1964, Hix recovered an Aggie fumble to help turn the tide for the Horns. With 2:24 left in the game, Hix scored a touchdown from two yards out, making the score 19-7 in favor of Texas over arch rival Texas A&M. Texas beat the Aggies that day, 26-7. “After the game was over, I ran off the field with the game ball,” said Hix. “I still have it at home, sitting on my desk.” Texas would meet #1 ranked Alabama next. “On January 1, 1965, we played against Joe Namath and the Alabama Crimson Tide, in the first Orange Bowl to ever be played at night in primetime,” said Hix. “We stayed at a hotel on Miami Beach, and worked out at the University of Miami. There were even a few NFL scouts hanging around.” Hix received the kickoff for the Longhorns as the Orange Bowl got underway. Late in the game, the Texas defense made one of the most famous stops at the goal line, to preserve a 21-17 win for Texas. With time running out, Namath tried a quarterback sneak and still claims he reached the end zone, but Tommy Nobis and Tom Currie turned him away. Texas would finish the 1964 season 10-1 and ranked #5 in the nation. At the end of our interview I mentioned to Hix, “So, you have never lost a football game to Oklahoma, Texas A&M, or Alabama, three pretty darn good programs.” “That’s right,” smiled Hix. “And we even beat Jerry Jones

"He's in a track suit," McGregor said, "He can't even afford a suit anymore. “I am honoured to be here, to give you this spectacle," "His little legs, his little core, his little head, I am going to knock him out inside four rounds, mark my words. "I am a young, confident, happy man that has worked extremely hard for this. I am just up here embracing everything. No-one can do anything to me. I am just enjoying myself and having a good time. He will be unconsciousness in four rounds. He has never faced this. I don't fear him. All these rules, all these restrictions, it doesn't faze me; it amuses me. It is funny to me all these rules. All I need is a gum shield. Line

Lunch with a Champion, Hix Green he also ran on the track team and qualified in the 100-yard dash during the Texas Relays. Green was not only recruited by Texas, Rice, Texas A&M, Georgia Tech, Navy, SMU, Coast Guard, Air Force Academy and Texas Tech, but he also received an appointment at Army. When I asked him “Why Texas?” he smiled and said, “When they flew me out there, the plebes convinced me that going to school at West Point was not all that it was cracked up to be.” Hix accepted an athletic scholarship to become a Longhorn. “I never regretted my decision,” said Hix.

who also retired with a perfect 49-0 career record. McGregor, the UFC's reigning lightweight champion and former featherweight champion, is known as much for his bravado as for his explosive knockout power inside an MMA octagon. The 28-year-old Irishman became the first UFC fighter to hold two belts simultaneously when he knocked out Eddie Alvarez in New York last November for the lightweight championship. The UFC stripped McGregor of his featherweight belt shortly after that fight when he announced he would be taking some time off after he and long-time partner Dee Devlin had their first baby in May. Known for his devastating striking and highlightreel knockouts, McGregor is also quick and irrational on his feet, but few would back him to beat one of the most complete boxers of all time.

What Are The Rules Of The Fight? The fight will be held under boxing rules, presenting a huge challenge for mixed martial artists McGregor as he faces off against one of

me up to the ring and I am good to go." *Ultimate Fighting Championship Dotson’s Other Note: In other exchanges between the contestants, the boxer called McGregor a “f***ot” in an event at Wembley Arena, and McGregor faces racism accusations for comments made last week. What a bunch of nothing. In boxing, you’ve no doubt heard many times of the next “Great White Hope.” Well this is worse; it is the “Great White Hype.” Are you even going to watch it; much less contribute in the neighborhood of $100 or so to watch it live and in living color on your or a friend’s big (48” or more) television set? In 1960, Hix reported for his freshman year with about 70 other players. “I looked around and the place was full of blue-chip players. Freshmen didn’t play on the varsity squad back then. Coach Royal red-shirted me for the 1961 season,” said Hix. In 1962, Hix got his first taste of big-time college football and the Longhorns finished 9-1-1, but lost on January 1, 1963, in the Cotton Bowl to LSU, 13-0. The Longhorns would not lose another football game until October 10, 1964. That’s right! The Longhorns went untied and undefeated for the 1963 season. Hix started the 1963 season off right. On October 12, 1963, with 2:42 left in the 3rd quarter, Green scored a touchdown from three yards out, in a 34-7 romp over Oklahoma State. A blowout win over Oklahoma 28-7, in the fourth week of the season, pushed the Longhorns to the #1 ranking. On November 9, with the Longhorns leading 7-0 late against Baylor, Hix made what would have been a game-saving interception. Baylor’s AllAmerican quarterback Don Trull threw to AllAmerican wide receiver Lawrence Elkins, but Green intercepted Trull’s pass and ran it back 21 yards. On the next play, Texas fullback Tom Stockton fumbled the ball back to Baylor. It took a Duke Carlisle interception in the end zone to save the day. On November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was shot and killed in Dallas, Texas.

and Jimmy Johnson when they both played at Arkansas.” Hix Green was a member of the Texas Longhorn football team from 1960-1964. He stands 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighs 170 pounds and played tailback and defensive back. “Everybody played both ways back then,” said Hix. Texas ran from a Wing-T formation, and used what was called a flip-flop offensive set. They had seven running plays to the right and then flipped the formation to run the same seven plays to the left. Hix spent a lot of time blocking for halfback, Tommy Ford, and quarterback, Duke Carlisle. Hix Green suited up for three Cotton Bowls and one Orange Bowl. During his career, Hix rushed 110 times, gained 318 yards and scored two touchdowns. Hix also recorded eight receptions for 80 yards. “We only had three pass plays,” laughed Hix. He also took his turn at running back kickoffs, returning punts and recovered several fumbles. For some of us, football is life. It’s where we find our happiness. “I don’t think my stats are important,” said Hix. “My final stats were less than I achieved in many single high school games for San Antonio Jefferson, but when called on…I delivered.” There is no doubt that Hix made several key plays that helped the Longhorns achieve greatness.
