Backwater Adventures By Jay Gardner

By Joey Farah

On the Rocks

Congrats to Scott Cross and Nueces County Coastal Parks system for applying for and having the faith in getting the RESTORE act funding. Good things are afoot for Padre Balli and I.B. Magee; maybe we’ll finally get that bowling alley and Ferris wheel that was supposed to be constructed by concessionaires in the original park plans back in 1949. LOL. Although I’m not sure a bowling alley is necessarily at the top of anyone’s list these days, but a frozen custard stand probably still is. What IS a frozen custard anyway?

Farah’s Fishing Adventures

Kevin ready to roll south

Redfish are streaming in to the back bay. Drift fishing with soft plastics and shrimp and popping corks have been great for hooking up with redfish.

Pinch the guts into the body and rip off the head, tear off the tail thread on the hook and put a squirt of Pro Cure a crab from ROYS BAIT AND TACKLE.

Another awesome redfish from the land cut using live shrimp. Spring migration’s have begun, come and get some!

The weather forecast for this weekend looks terrible. Like organize-your-sock-drawer kind of terrible. Which is the harbinger for SPRING BREAK starting! The weather turning always coincides with the first arrivals from college campuses scattered about the country. I hit the stores already and have most of my supplies to get through the craziness. It will be really interesting to see how it goes with the high tides, less beach due to Mustang Island State park erecting the bollards, and the new traffic light. If any of you locals get into a bind, bang on the coconut telegraph and we’ll send the skiff to get you over to or from Flour Bluff at least. The Big Shell Clean Up went off this past weekend amid really pretty weather conditions. We were pleasantly surprised when over 750 volunteers showed up to get the job done! It was overwhelming to break attendance records yet again this year, despite other events occurring at the same time. Thank you very much each and every one of you that showed up. The water came up a little higher than expected, and we didn’t make it as far south as we would have liked, but the sections that got cleaned were done very well. The new plastic recycling

program also went off without a hitch, and I’ll bet that we will do that again next year. It was really great seeing Donna and Cynthia, but I missed catching up with you, Ranger Buzz. Nice meeting you Dianne, maybe I’ll see you around.

The CCA-CC Banquet is next week! I can’t believe that it’s that time already! As of this writing we are SOLD OUT again this year, so if you don’t have your tickets already, you moved too slow. There might be a ticket or two that could be sold at the door the night of, but don’t count on it. We have a lot of great auction and raffle items this year, including a few new things that are really cool. The trips in the live auction range from a Wicked Tuna trip on the east coast, to Costa Rica, Argentina, Africa safaris, Bahamas, Cabo, New Zealand, Napa Valley, and Kenai Alaska. Literally something for everyone. Hope to see you all there, wish us luck, as the money we raise is “For the Fish” in the form of the Habitat Today/ Fish for Tomorrow Program. I’ve been keeping you loyal readers in the loop on that stuff, and there’s some good projects coming up. The Rio Grande Valley Reef is going to be populated with material here in the next month or so, and we’re already talking about the next round of material for the Packery Channel reef. Stay tuned. Well folks, that’s it for another installment this week. Fortunately, I didn’t have any room to discuss the retroactive carport tax that the City was discussing this past week. How about y’all just get going on fixing the infrastructure with the money that you have first, huh? In other news, it’s looking like there may be a small fallout on Friday afternoon, so get those feeders up and find the binos. Drop me a line at tarponchaser@mail.com and I’ll see you On the Rocks.

BUSINESS BBB celebrates National Consumer Protection Week March 5-11

National Reading Month – The Importance of Reading

By Kelly Trevino Regional Director, Corpus Christi Better Business Bureau With an ever-shifting environment for consumers when it comes to shopping online, managing credit and protecting their identity, it’s no wonder Better Business Bureau receives thousands of consumer complaints and scam reports every year. National Consumer Protection Week is a coordinated campaign that “encourages consumers nationwide to take full advantage of their consumer rights and make betterinformed decisions.” BBB is one of many partner organizations that offers consumers tips on various topics such as, identity theft, credit, shopping and scams. Better Business Bureau serving Central, Coastal, Southwest Texas and the Permian Basin helps people find and recommend businesses, brands and charities they can trust. Thousands of people turn to BBB as the preeminent resource on businesses. BBB aims to go the extra mile in encouraging consumers to take full advantage of their rights. In recognition of NCPW, BBB offers the following advice: Always check out a business with BBB first. Go to bbb.org to see a company’s BBB Business Profile. You can also find local, trustworthy business using BBB’s Accredited Business directory. Get everything in writing and always read the fine print. Contracts are meant to protect a business and consumers by outlining the terms of the agreement. While it’s natural to want to skim through parts of the long-written terms and conditions, it is important that customers fully understand their rights and what they’re agreeing to. Whenever signing a contract, BBB recommends reading the fine print carefully — even if it means taking it home and sleeping on it.

Protect your identity — and your wallet. Fighting identity theft means staying vigilant online and offline. Always shred sensitive documents that include personal financial information such as your bank account number, credit card and Social Security number. Monitor your financial accounts closely to quickly detect suspicious activity. Shop on secure websites, and always confirm that the business is trustworthy before entering your credit card number. Never wire money to someone you don’t know. Scammers know it’s extremely difficult to track money sent via MoneyGram or Western Union, so never wire money to someone you don’t know. More troubling for victims is the fact that it’s nearly impossible to get your money back once it’s been sent via wire. Even if you’ve been given a check to cover the amount you’re wiring, never send money to someone you don’t know personally. The check could be fraudulent, leaving you liable for the money. Avoid scams. BBB offers Scam Tracker, an interactive online tool where people can find and report scams near them. Watch out for red flags of a scam, such as requests to send money via wire transfer or prepaid debit card, or requests for personal and financial information, such as your Social Security number or bank account number. If something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Kelly Trevino is the regional director for the Corpus Christi/Victoria area of Better Business Bureau serving Central, Coastal, Southwest Texas and the Permian Basin. Kelly is available for media interviews and speaking engagements. You can reach her by phone: (361) 945-7352 or email: ktrevino@corpuschristi.bbb.org.

CCA Texas and BCT to invest $530,000 Towards Habitat in 2017 Partnership with Several Conservation Groups will Benefit over $4 Million in Coastal Habitat Coastal Conservation Association Texas (CCA Texas) and Building Conservation Trust (BCT), the national habitat program of CCA, have committed to an investment of $530,000 towards marine habitat work along the Texas coast. Through several dedicated partnerships, this will equate to $4.28 million in coastal habitat. “It has been exciting to watch the natural partnership between CCA Texas and BCT grow,” said John Blaha, director of CCA Texas’s Habitat Program, Habitat Today for Fish Tomorrow (HTFT). “We are accomplishing so much in 2017 by working together, and this relationship will continue to produce great work.” BCT and CCA Texas are providing $70,000 in funding towards the Coastal Bend Bays and Estuaries Program Egery Island Project. The funds for the $1.2 million permitted project will enable up to seven acres of marsh to be planted off of Copano Bay. Since inception, CCA Texas and BCT have supported the Rio Grande Valley Reef (RGV Reef) just north of the Brownsville Jetties. This project is led by the Friends of RGV Reef and will cover 1,650 acres, making it the largest permitted nearshore site in Texas. BCT and CCA Texas have previously invested $200,000 into the RGV Reef, and have contributed an additional $55,000 in 2017. The Harte Research Institute (HRI), a longtime partner of CCA Texas and BCT, is conducting two scientific studies this year that the pair is supporting. The first is a study on the Port O’Connor “Keeping it Wild” Reef, which will provide an opportunity to substantially advance the science of artificial reef creation and show the value of this type of restoration work. The second is an Oyster Restoration Site Locator and Identification Mapping study, which will create a restoration tool for identifying suitable sites for restoration efforts. CCA

Texas and BCT have invested $50,000 and $120,000 in these studies, respectively, in 2017. Galveston Bay Foundation (GBF) is also no stranger to the CCA Texas/BCT partnership. In 2017, they are receiving $150,000 from CCA Texas and BCT towards the Moses Lake Shoreline Protection project, which will provide shoreline erosion protection for 1.3 miles of shoreline and restore up to 10 acres of intertidal marsh complex within Moses Lake, as well as $85,000 towards a grass planting event at Bird Island Cove. BCT and CCA Texas have provided previous support to the Bird Island Cove Marsh Restoration project, which will directly benefit approximately 114 acres of existing coastal wetlands in the Bird Island Cove area. “The projects receiving our investments in 2017 reflect BCT and CCA Texas’s shared mission, cover a diversity of marine conservation goals and are spread along the state coast,” said Sean Stone, executive director of BCT. “They will restore degraded habitats, create new habitats, advance the science of habitat restoration and conservation, and educate coastal communities on the value of conservation.” Through a highly successful matching funds program, BCT has garnered over $9 million towards more than 37 coastal projects in the United States. In 2016, CCA Texas provided funds of $1.8 million to BCT, which they are leveraging to bring in more funds. The Building Conservation Trust has a target of investing over $3.5 million towards Texas marine habitat projects by the year 2021, equating to $10 million in projects with similar partner organizations. “CCA Texas and BCT are providing support to projects all along the Texas Gulf Coast,” said Robby Byers, executive director of CCA Texas. “We are proud to partner with all of these likeminded marine conservation organizations, continue to build upon valuable relationships and be a part of the important habitat work they do.”

The month of March is National Reading Month. This month is designated to motivate Americans of all ages to read every day. Reading regularly has been linked to development of positive mental health throughout our lives. It is never too early to help children develop reading skills. In fact, the National Early Literacy Panel produced a report over recent research that states literacy skills begin to develop at birth. As a result, you can have a large influence on young children’s later success. This can be accomplished by helping them learn the alphabet by singing it aloud, play with letters to enable letter recognition, finger paint and teach them how to write each letter and how to write their names, etc. Other fun beneficial activities for this age group can be found at http://www.leapfrog.com/en-us/learning-path/ articles/march-is-national-reading-month-evenif-you-dont-readyet. For school age children, reading aloud to them is beneficial for their continued progress in literacy skills. Reading aloud together helps the child develop their phonics skills. This is the ability to hear and identify the correspondence between these sounds and the spelling patterns that represent them. In addition, engage the child in conversations on what kind of books they enjoy reading and why those genres are their preference. Doing these types of activities can help him/her gain confidence that will help them excel in school. Other helpful tips for reading to and/or with this age group can be found at http://www.nea.org/ grants/reading-to-young-school-age-children. html. We can all set examples that will inspire our youth to read as they continue to grow. For instance, reading daily yourself sets a great example. Keeping books, magazines, newspapers, interesting blogs, etc. visible will encourage you and the youth to read. Taking a

Forming a habit of reading daily has several positive effects on people of all ages. It keeps your brain stimulated resulting in slowing the progress of Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia. Keeping your brain engaged can also increase your knowledge, vocabulary, capability to write, and enhance analytical skills. In addition, those who regularly read have a better memory, ability to focus, and longer concentration skills. All of which are beneficial in school and/or the workplace. Reading is also often thought of as a great stress relief and promotes tranquility. Reading is a crucial life skill that must be developed and maintained throughout our lives. Eating Green Iguana Another Peek at the Emberá

By Brent Rourk

[Writer’s Note 3 of 3: During a recent trip to Panama I returned to visit Tribe 3 (Tribo Tres) of the Emberá Indians in the Chagres National Park in the Darien Province, accessible by small dugout boat only.

Savoring Green Iguana Andrea asked me if I would like to share a taste of what she ate for lunch. Immediately, I excitedly answered ‘Yes!’ Within minutes she brought back a worn, wooden bowl with large chunks of meat with a shiny green-blue reptilian skin. Two walnut sized leathery eggs rested on the bottom of the bowl. She reached in with fingers and ate a piece of the Green Iguana (Iguana iguana), commonly referred to in Central America as ‘chicken of the trees’ or ‘bamboo chicken’. It had a thin sauce lightly covering each piece, however, the iridescent skin colors broke through the sauce. I reached into the bowl, quickly examined a piece, and broke off small, meaty portions. It was delicious and the delicate sauce enhanced the flavor. She encouraged us to try a leathery egg, by biting through the leathery casing and squeezing the soft, light yellow insides into our mouth.

leading back to the boat securely nestled on the sandy shore of the Chagres River. I looked back up the high bank to a thatched hut overlooking the river when I heard a familiar voice. Andrea was waving at me with one hand while holding her child in another. “Escribeme [write me] Brent” she yelled down. I waved back letting her know I was going to write to her.

Simultaneously, shrieks from young males punctuated the still afternoon and echoed along the river directly below the encampment. There were 4 young men calling out in their Emberá language as they let the current in a slightly faster part of the Chagres River carry them. Their smiles were wide, their voices joyful, and their rides down the Chagres River memorable for them. It was their way of life, their fun for the day, and their personal pool. I reached over the side of the log boat and dipped my hand into the astoundingly clear and warm water. I wanted to stay and join them, but my time with the Emberá had regrettably come to a close. I had mixed feelings; in one sense ecstatic to visit them again yet disappointed and saddened at having to leave. I craved more time, but settled for relishing and appreciating the impact and memories of my day with them.

Returning to Panama City The trip back down the river was equally stunning and with the day’s memories racing in my head, I decided that I needed to return to Tribo Tres again, hopefully sooner than four years. Moreover, I thought that I would like to live there for a year, with solar chargers for my iPhone (photos and write my experiences) and professional camera/lenses, relinquishing any responsibilities on the Island and surrendering the comforts of city, or rather Island life. Granted solar chargers for a phone and camera are not exactly complete isolation from city life and the rest of the world, but it would be a start.

I did as she instructed and was treated to the most amazing flavor. The female Green Iguana must have been about 3 to 4 feet long and had about one dozen eggs inside of her. It would make about four meals for her family, and most likely more because the Emberá are cognizant of the difficulties in finding food and thus eat much smaller meals than city folk or most Americans. The Emberá also loosely raise chickens that wander around their encampment just as a few dogs call the encampment home.

Within 45 minutes we were back at the launching area where the Chagres River has been dammed creating Lake Gatun. Within an hour we were back at our hotel, lounging in the 10th floor pool overlooking the Cangrejo (crab) district of Panama City. Throughout that late afternoon and evening I could only think about the Emberá and Tribo Tres. Crazy? Perhaps. Admittedly so. Yet there is such raw beauty, love, and kindness in and around Tribo Tres, that it is challenging to completely and accurately portray and explain their way of life and the scenery, let alone my sound attachment. I love their way of life, and although personally I do not want to be the westerner who significantly etches away at Tribo Tres culture and sanctuary, introducing more ‘westernism and modernism’, I am compelled to return and to spend more time in a world with few modern culture comforts. The invasion of tourism to Tribo Tres has begun and it is simply a matter of time before those inhabitants learn more about the outside world, tote cell phones, and adopt additional western traditions. What is the purpose of life, what are the goals, what are the preferred paths of achieving those goals? Unquestionably, it is up to the individual to ask and answer those questions. As I ask myself, I find an answer, at least temporary, in the warmth and peace of the Emberá. It is a time when thousands of years of Emberá culture is beginning to change rapidly.

Islanders Should Try Panama Later Andrea shared with us their native drink that each family makes for the day; it was made from water, native sweet corn, and cinnamon. It was tasty and nutritious. Somebody said there was also milk in it and later I wished I had questioned her more about the milk. It is a staple drink of Tribo Tres. Curiously, it was served in a styrofoam cup. The only land pollution I saw was a small, empty potato chip bag near where the boats land. Generous with her time and food, Andrea seemed to enjoy the exchange about cultures and living in Tribo Tres. We had pushed the limits of our welcome though Andrea continued

Sitting with Andea to be hospitable and would have quickly and graciously extended an invitation for the night or two. A city guide who accompanied us was noticeably anxious to return to the ‘safety and comfort’ of the city so before it began to get dark we said our goodbyes.

Leaving Andrea emphatically invited me to return to Tribo Tres, and in the meantime to send her some of the photographs I took and to write to her at an e-mail address she checks once every 4 or 5 weeks when she travels to Panama City for a day. Slowly, I descended the unsteady steps

For those Island travelers and adventurers, I highly recommend a week long adventure in Panama. There are many things to see and experience. The trip can be as cushy or as grueling as you desire. Further, the people are friendly, it is a quick plane ride, the climate is often perfect, and Panama accepts our currency. Boating for a day in the Panama Canal area reveals an astounding amount of wildlife, from butterflies and other insects to sloths, crocodiles, turtles, a variety of monkeys, birds, and more. Take a dependable camera, a hat, sunscreen, and water. A visit to the Panama Canal or even a boat trip through it is also an entertaining experience. Learn about its construction and recent expansion. Have a lunch there on the grounds and consider purchasing a hand-made ‘Molas’ from the Kuna Indians on the street leading up to the Canal information center. Exploring the city can be done on a ‘Hop-on/ Hop off’ bus for as little as $29 per day and will be enhanced if you have a tourist guide or book about Panama City. A more costly but organized option is to pay for a 4 to 6 hour tour of highlights of Panama City through one of the many local tour companies. Don’t miss the historical old downtown, the skyscraper zone, the view at Bridge of Americas, the native ruins inside Panama City, the celebrated Panama City Fish Market (a must see, especially early in the morning) and its nest of small seafood restaurants, and a hike to the top of Ancon Hill, the highest view in Panama City (note: this is a hike that will challenge most people.) A one day trip to the Gamboa Forest is a fabulous way to spend a few hours as is the hike in the National Park located within Panama City. Take a drive to some of the cities along the coast, enjoying the ambiance, culture, and food. There are numerous hotels and bed and breakfasts to cater to virtually every budget and need. There are also some incredible real estate deals along both norther coasts of Panama. Visit the Emberá, Tribo Tres if possible, and enjoy the drive from the bustle of Panama City through some of the poorer rural towns out into the countryside where the road ends. There you

will find a worn fleet of dug out boats that will take you back to another culture and another time. It will be an unforgettable experience to visit settled communities of Emberá. Say hello to Andrea, Johnson (whose mother named him after the boat motors), Alexis, and Eleah and tell them that Brent said hello. You might even see me there.

Drawn Back to the Emberá Perhaps you will be as drawn to the Emberá as I am or perhaps not. My admiration and attachment for the Emberá, at times defying logic, is passionate and powerful, and will last my lifetime. The alluring call of peace, kindness, and simplicity nestled in a picturesque environment is simply too formidable for me to forget, deny, or ignore. I wish to spend more time there. Period! Will it work out? Who knows. I turned 69 yesterday and no doubt I am at least mildly addicted to some of the comforts, ills, benefits, sorrows, and joys of modern living. I have withstood and at times tolerated if not embraced the ‘rat race’, traffic, hot showers, pollution, scurrying, technology, tools, multi-tasking, the computer, Island life, electricity, movies, noise, comfy couches, strong, hot coffee with designer creams, extensive travel, smoothies and breakfast tacos, city violence, Corvettes and Mini Vans, meaningful organizations, microwaves, music, refrigerators and other modern appliances, crime, pillow-top beds, prescriptions, mean people, television, iTunes, telemarketers, museums, art, growing societal anger, e-mail, Facebook and other social media, HEB, political madness, ordering online, restaurants, and the insatiable curiosity about what is happening in the world every day. How hopelessly addicted am I to modern culture? What have I permitted to be a permanent part of my life? Could I change? Could I suddenly withdraw myself from those modern hallmarks? Could I survive a lengthy stay tucked away in a tropical forest? I cannot predict the possible outcome with much accuracy, but I do know that is where my heart is at. In the near future many of the settled native communities will give way to modern cultures. They and their thousands of years of history will be swallowed up into the masses of concrete jungles. In the meantime, I want to experience their culture the way it is today.

Three Chords and the Truth

By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com

Happy Mardi Gras… Well, Mardi Gras has come and gone for another year. My family was in town this weekend so I didn’t make it over to the Barefoot Mardi Gras celebrations on Padre but it just gets bigger and better every year. I saw some pics of the massive crowds on the beach for the parade and am sorry I missed it. I heard from Tamay that there were 65 floats in the parade and an estimated 100,000 people on the beach. I did talk to Jim Beal of the Earfood Orchestra and he assured me that the King and Queens Party was a rocking good time. Up here in Port A, the 21st Annual Mardi Gras Parade went swimmingly. Founder Janet Planet led the charge, as usual, and we rocked the streets of Port A in grand fashion. The Gaff

event will be the St. Patty’s Day Pub Crawl on the 17th, right in the big middle of Spring Break. Gear up folks… the masses are on their way.

and the ilk. Diaz plays Port A several times a year with his band, Hannah’s Reef and has developed a strong fan base here. I especially love to hear his great steel drum player who gives his music a distinct Harry Belafonte feel. Later that evening, the actual concert was held at the Third Coast Theater with Dan Sullivan, Eric Erdman and Brendan Mayer. Again, these boys are money in the bank and easily filled the house at Third Coast. BTW, the Third Coast is one of the finest listening rooms you’ll find anywhere. The audiences are gracious and appreciative. And the room is acoustically sound and warm… perfect for the quieter acts they do in there. In other words, you won’t find any mosh pits. I highly recommend it.

on acoustic guitar. That there my friends is as good as it gets. Ty played Shorty’s the next night with Andrew Ray Jones on cajon. His usual guitarist, Steve Santos was occupied with his band, Duke E. Brown, who played Giggity’s the night before. Duke E. Brown is a puro blues band with no gimmicks and no trick ponies.

DO NOT MISS LIST Coming this Weekend

There’s a big show at Brewster Street Ice House tonight, Thursday the 2nd with Bri Bagwell, Mark McKinney, Jake Ward and Nathan Bonnes celebrating Texas Independence Day. Also on Thursday, the Free Beer Band will play Giggity’s and Somethin’ Silky will be at Rockit’s in town. On Friday, the Bad Buoys will play Giggity’s and Clarissa Serna will grace the stage at Rockit’s. Also, Red Giant will be at Shorty’s and the great “Nerd Rock” band, the Spazmatics will play Brewster Street. On Saturday the 4th, the great Americana talent, Bart Crow, will play Brewster Street, True Country will be at the 361 Bar, Eric Magnusson will play Shorty’s and Ruben Limas and the Rolling J’s will play Giggity’s.

Scattered shots… The Back Porch re-opened for the season with all the usual suspects like Ron, Lee and Keith Though the weather was a little on the cool side last weekend, our beloved Back Porch successfully got their doors open for another glorious season. I got there early in the afternoon last Friday only to discover every seat in the house was already taken. All the usual suspects were in attendance and the Billy Snipes was there setting up for his show that evening. I really enjoyed walking in there and seeing GM Lee Harper’s smiling and excited face beaming. That gentleman is full of positive energy and it shows in his staff. It’s contagious. There are a lot of new faces and we’ll miss some of the old ones that aren’t there this year. So saddle up folks, I guarantee another fun ride. Our old pal, Davin James (Spring, TX) will be there on Friday and Police reincarnates, Scarecrow People, will be there on Saturday.

On the horizon… In the near future watch for a Led Zepplin tribute band at Brewster Street on the 8th. Kevin Fowler (Dallas, TX) will be there on the 9th. Also on the 9th, Billy Snipes will play Cassidy’s Irish Pub in Corpus. On the 10th, Mark Monaco and the Brave Hearts (San Antonio, TX) will play the Back Porch and on the 11th, Chris Saucedo (San Antonio, TX) will be there. Also on the 11th, Stuart Michael Burns will play the Rialto Theater in A.P and Billie Snipes will be at Giggity’s with the Rasta Cowboys. On the 15th, the great Independent Thieves will play a Wednesday show at Gigg’s . on the 16th the golden voice of Simon Snyder will return to the Back Porch and on the 17th, the great James Little will play Giggity’s. That ought to keep you busy for a while.

The boys from Corpus are big fans of Ty Dietz, at the 361 Bar Ty Dietz played a couple of shows last weekend. He was at the 361 Bar on Friday with his boys from Corpus: Cody Strong (drums), J.M. Muniz (upright bass) and Matt Martinez
