Backwater Adventures By Joey Farah

By Jay Gardner

On the Rocks

Well folks it’s been a whirling dervish of activity around here lately. I had to bomb to South Padre this morning for work, and I’m just making it back in town this Wednesday late afternoon to get another installment of my gripping tale in to you loyal readers before the wire. Err something like that.

for decades, and need to go. However, he did say that one nice looking inboard/outboard boat showed up, and the folks said that they couldn’t sell it lately. They were having to move out of state, and were just getting rid of it. I’m sure some “enterprising individuals” could intercept some of these boats and get a good deal or two. However, most of these boats, Robbie said, are barely making it to the place to be crushed. And they’re having to deal with trailers. I’m sure some “enterprising individuals” could

Annual Whooping Crane Strut March 11 The 29th Annual Whooping Crane Strut will be held at 8:00 a.m., Saturday, March 11, 2017, at Memorial Park, which is located at the intersection of Pearl Street/FM 2165 and Enterprise Blvd. This chip-timed event includes a 5k and 10k run, plus 2-mile walk. The race course will be on the Memorial Park and Tule Hike & Bike Trails. Awards will be presented to the overall male and female winners of each event, a Masters and Grand Masters Category, and awards to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers in their respective age categories for each event. Those registering prior to race day are also guaranteed an event T-shirt. Registration forms are available on the City of Rockport website, Rockport City Hall, Bay Education Center, Rockport-Fulton Chamber of Commerce, and Community Aquatic & Skate Park, as well as online (https://

www.athleteguild.com/running/rockporttx/2017-29th-annual-whooping-crane-strut). Entry fees are $25, and $30 on race day. Also, groups of six or more will receive a 10% discount. Five dollars from every paid registration will be donated to the Water for Wildlife Fund, managed by the Friends of Aransas & Matagorda Island National Wildlife Refuge. Funds are used to provide fresh water for the whooping cranes and other wildlife at Aransas National Wildlife Refuge. Volunteers are also needed to assist at drink stations and to serve as race marshals. Volunteers receive an event T-shirt, and all will be entered into the door prize drawings following the awards presentation. Those interested in volunteering should contact Rick Martinez, the race director, at 361-790-1136 or at parks@cityofrockport.com.

pleasant down there. Obviously they have their fair share of winter Texans, and the variety of license plates and accents down there are just as varied as Port Aransas. And everyone is relaxed and having fun, because they’re not shoveling snow! It was blazing hot down there with this west wind off the desert, which also cranked up my allergies. Ugh. On the way back, we witnessed the seemingly inevitable signs of progress; the Petronila windfarm was erecting their very first tower. It is just off on the south side of Chapman Ranch road about halfway between Bishop and the south side. We are almost surrounded by windfarms, with the Taft windfarm on the north, the Petronila to the west, and the Kenedy windfarm to the south. If the Baryonyx Corporation had made it through with their plans, we would be staring at a wind farm to the east and south of us as well. We literally would be surrounded by windfarms. You loyal readers know that I’ve been writing about windfarms for years; while I support the use of alternative energy, I don’t believe that roller-chopping the 387 species of birds that migrate through our coastal bend twice a year on their migration routes is a good idea. We’ll see how long this windfarm fad lasts. I got a report from my game warden buddy Robbie a few minutes ago regarding the boat “turn-in” program that is going on today through Saturday at the Laguna Madre Wastewater facility in Flour Bluff at 201 Jester Street. He said that there were a surprising number of vessels showing up to be crushed and sent to the landfill. Most of these boats have been eyesores

help some of the boats that either don’t have trailers, or trailers that have cratered to get to the drop off point. He also said that some boats that are showing up are from landowners yards, but some are boats that have been dumped and neighbors and other people are getting together to remove these abandoned mosquito factories. I have a couple of spare trailers that I might be willing to donate to the cause. Drop me a line at tarponchaser@mail.com if you fall into the category of wanting to get rid of a boat somewhere but need a trailer to get it there. Or ask a neighbor. I think this is a really good program, and Robby says based on the response, that they will be doing this again. Again, it ends this Saturday, so dig those old boats out of the weeds and get rid of them! I can’t believe that the Billy Sandifer Big Shell Clean Up has snuck up on us this quickly, but it is in two weeks on February the 25th. Yes, we are all keenly aware that the day is the same as the Barefoot Mardi Gras parade, but the Clean Up is on the same day every year: Mardi Gras is what moved. My float this year will be my Chevy as I serve as Section Leader again, heading south and cleaning it up again this event. Y’all come out and join us, and that reminds me that I need to get supplies for my famous chili-cheese hotdogs together for the deal. In addition, the CCA-Corpus Christi Banquet is also creeping up on March 9th. Another event you all need to plan on joining us at. I’ll see y’all On the Rocks!

The Senate has given tentative approval to a measure that would outlaw the practice of sanctuary cities in Texas. This is a term commonly applied to municipalities that have policies, formal or otherwise, of discouraging or prohibiting officers from inquiring into immigration status of lawfully detained persons or cooperating with federal immigration officials. Governor Greg Abbott singled out the bill in last week’s State of the State address, where he said this year would be the year the state bans the practice. He named it an emergency issue, fast tracking the legislation for consideration. Bill author Senator Charles Perry of Lubbock said this bill isn’t about immigration but rather about the rule of law. “This bill ensures that there is predictability, that our laws are applied without prejudice and equally no matter who is in elected capacity,” he said. Perry added during the debate that immigrants, documented or otherwise, who aren’t committing crimes have nothing to fear in SB 4. “That’s all it applies to, the guys who break the law,” he said.

Dave Hunt, air show coordinator. “Once again, we have the U.S. Army’s Golden Knights jumping into show central, as well as other military and civilian acts that will delight the young and old alike!” On both days, there is free admission and free parking. In addition to banning sanctuary city policies, the bill would allow the state to withhold funds from cities that don’t comply with the proposed law. They would also have to comply with requests from immigration officials to transfer custody of detained suspected criminal undocumented immigrants. Should a jurisdiction ignore such a request, and the person goes on to commit a crime after release, the bill would permit the victims of the crime to sue the jurisdiction for damages. In an effort to avoid discouraging people stepping forward to report crimes regardless of immigration status, witnesses to and victims of crimes are exempted under the bill. Additionally, police officers couldn’t stop a person for no reason other than to inquire about their immigration status. The bill still has one more procedural vote to clear, likely on Wednesday, then it heads to the House for consideration. Also Tuesday, the Senate passed the omnibus ethics reform bill unanimously. Bill author Senator Van Taylor of Plano said that the trust between the people and elected officials is the bedrock of our democratic process. “That’s why this bill is needed,” he said. “It is an affirmation to the people that our efforts to represent them rise above even the appearance of impropriety or self-service.” The bill, SB 14, seeks to improve ethics standards for elected officials by lowering the dollar amount threshold for reporting food and entertainment from lobbyists and would remove any legislator or statewide elected official convicted of a felony from office and cancel any taxpayer funded pension they had coming. Under the bill, lawmakers and members of their immediate family would have to disclose any private business ties to state contracts. It also looks to strengthen the wall between legislators and lobbyists by disallowing any person from serving in office while registered as a lobbyist. The bill creates an anti”revolving door” rule that would require any lawmaker leaving the Legislature to wait a full legislative session before they can register as a lobbyist. The bill now heads to the House for consideration. The Senate will reconvene Wednesday, February 8 at 11 a.m.

Cancer Prevention Month By Todd Hunter, District 32

The month of February is Cancer Prevention month. The State of Texas recognizes February to raise awareness of this disease. Cancer causes more deaths than any other illness or health issue worldwide. Cancer is a varied group of diseases that are caused by abnormal, invasive cell growth within the tissue of an organ. Cancer cells are capable of spreading to other parts of the body if they are not discovered and/or treated in a reasonable amount of time. The World Health Organization has determined at least 1/3 of all cancer cases are preventable. Through decades of research, health organizations and officials have determined several habits our citizens can incorporate into their lives to help prevent cancer. Avoiding the use of, or high exposure to tobacco is the best way to prevent lung cancer which has been identified as the most-deadly form of this affliction. Besides lung cancer, tobacco use causes cancer to develop and/or spread in the mouth, throat, larynx, pancreas, bladder, cervix, and kidneys. Along with lung cancer, skin cancer is another highly common and highly preventable form of this disease. For example, by applying sunscreen regularly, reducing time spent in artificial tanning beds, and/or covering exposed skin while spending time in the sun will reduce the risk of developing skin cancer. These safe practices are especially important during the sun’s peak times. The exact time frames depend on the season, but the rays from the sun are usually strongest from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Another way to reduce the possibility of developing breast, colon, lung, kidney, and/ or liver cancer(s) is to establish a healthier diet. This can be accomplished by reducing the intake of processed foods and drinks, like fast food and alcohol, and replacing them with nuts or vegetables and 100% real fruit juices. Gradual changes like these can lead to the ability to maintain a healthy weight which is also proven to reduce cancer in the breasts, prostate, lungs, colon, and/or kidneys.

By Debbie Noble The Nueces County Clerk’s office held a public hearing to discuss the Vote Centers used during the November general election. This meeting was required by the Secretary of State in order to continue being a part of the county-wide voting program. Approximately 15 people spoke to the county commissioners and the consensus seemed to be that the concept of vote centers is positive and should be continued, with some improvements to the execution. Concerns seemed to be with the amount or efficacy of training for election judges and personnel and some issues with equipment malfunctioning. Vote centers were implemented to make voting easier and more convenient to all voters and to reduce election costs for the county. Rebecca Huerta, the City Secretary for Corpus Christi mentioned that the city would be supportive of continuing the vote center program for the upcoming May 6 Mayoral Election (and probable following run-off election), especially since going back to the previous precinct system could cause serious voter confusion. It is always challenging to find enough appropriate locations that are willing to open their doors to the election process and that also fulfill all ADA requirements, so every election seems to require some location adjustments. In the past, some voter confusion and frustration occurred over finding the correct location for a particular precinct or being turned away from the wrong location. Under the new program, anyone can vote anywhere on Election Day, just like during Early Voting, which does alleviate that problem. A number of educational outreach efforts were affected by the county, local parties, the league of women voters, and precinct chairs through

direct mail, television, social media, radio, newspapers and newsletters, and email. High turnout and equipment issues lead to some long lines, especially during the early days of early voting at some locations. In particular, the cameras (used to check identification) caused technical issues. Once they were identified as the problem, they were removed (and returned to the company for a refund) and the process greatly improved, according to Kara Sands, County Clerk. Although accurate turnout statistics for specific precinct/ballots has not been investigated, turnout county wide was 54%, which is a significant increase over previous general elections in 2012 (47%) and 2008 (46%). Several people, including Jennifer Ellis, the Democratic Party Chair, expressed an interest in the formation of a bipartisan Advisory Committee to help determine a fair and balanced distribution of voting locations to make sure that no areas felt disenfranchised. “If we fix the issues, this will be a great asset,” she added. Commissioner Pusley, after listening to all the comments, said ,”I think it’s the right thing to do. We want to provide fair and balanced opportunity for all voters” Commissioner Brent Chesney summed up the discussion by reminding people not to confuse equipment failure with the vote center concept. “Let’s fix the equipment and train the people and work hard to get the word out. Many thanks to all the people who worked hard on this. “ County clerk, Kara Sands, concluded by saying that her office was always open and she welcomed any advice or conversation. “My staff is great and worked hard on this but we can always do better and we want to do better.” The city mayoral election will take place on May 6. Early voting will be April 24-May 2.

The sooner cancer is identified, the better! Cancer treatments are typically much more successful when the abnormal cells are still fairly adolescent and contained. There are many signs and/or symptoms that have been associated with cancer. For example, many who have suffered brain tumors, caused by cancer, experience headaches that will not subside even after treatment. Unrelenting back pain may also be a symptom of colon, rectum, or ovarian cancers. A more visible way to detect potential cancer is through changes in the skin. Skin might begin to look darker, redder, more yellow, etc. You can find a more complete list of signs and symptoms cancer can cause at https:// www.cancer.org/cancer/cancer-basics/signsand-symptoms-of-cancer.html.

Letters from Frostbite Betty

Ok, this is an improbable proposal: C’mon everybody, it’s dark and cold and frozen, let’s go for a hike. How Minnesotan is that! And oddly enough, we were all excited about it, along with several thousand other folks. Not kidding. So here’s the scoop: every year there’s an event called the Luminary Loppet, usually on cross country skis, around the edge of a lake in the middle of a fancy-house neighborhood in the city. All the way around the two mile route are 1500 ice candles, with pull-outs for ice sculptures large and small, and hot cocoa. Kinda like Sandfest?! Everyone gets a colored glow stick on entry, so there is a parade of bobbing tiny glow sticks, backed up by the lights from the leftover holiday decorations on the houses, and the distant lights from the city. Pretty cool.

and a goofy character with ice hands among others. Further on was the Ice-cropolis, with a gaggle of parents compelled to try to explain to the kids what the Acropolis actually was. The candles suspended within the pillars each made intriguing diamond shapes that intertwined each other. Following the path a bit further we came to Icehenge. It was a lovely evening, even though we were all on foot due to the big meltdown in January. Just goes to show there’s no slowing down those sturdy northerners. Hope y’all are getting out to the water’s edge yourselves. Enjoy, Betty and Bert

BBB Offers Tips for Spring Break Travelers

Release the Kraken! The Texas Parks and Wildlife Department’s Artificial Reef Program sank a 371-ft cargo vessel, named The Kraken, on January. 20, Dubbed the Kraken after the mythical, squidlike sea monster immortalized on film and in literature, the vessel was sunk 67 miles off the coast of Galveston to create a new artificial reef. The Kraken began its journey in May 2016 when it was towed from Trinidad to Brownsville, Texas to be repurposed for its new life as an artificial reef 140 feet below the surface. Contractors with Cahaba Disaster Recovery LLC worked with our Artificial Reef Program to remove all fuel, oil and hazardous materials from the vessel in order to comply with the Environmental Protection Agency’s best management practices.

“The entire marine ecosystem benefits from artificial reef projects like the Kraken,” said TPWD Artificial Reef Program Leader J. Dale Shively. “The Gulf of Mexico has only a few naturally occurring reefs so whenever we are able to add a new structure like this, the whole area benefits from the added habitat and species diversity.” As an Artificial Reef Program Ships-to-Reefs project, the sinking of the Kraken was made possible by donations and Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill natural resource damage settlement funds jointly provided by natural resource trustee agencies in Texas which include the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and Texas General Land Office.

Over time, this sunken ship will become an artificial reef that attracts fish, coral and other invertebrates as well as divers and anglers. The Kraken’s proximity to the Flower Gardens Marine Sanctuary also makes it a premiere dive location in the Gulf of Mexico.

The 2nd Lone Star Lionfish Symposium Hosts Public Forum

The public will soon have a chance to ask the experts about the spiky, venomous fish invading Texas coastal waters and threatening natural resources.

Lionfish have become a problem in recent years as they’ve spread into coastal and marine ecosystems in the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico. With few natural predators, these IndoPacific predators have spread throughout the region, reducing the number of fish, shrimp and crab species as well as degrading reefs. In areas of high density, they are causing both ecological and economic damage. The 2nd Lone Star Lionfish Symposium will hold a public forum from 7 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 15 at the Moody Gardens IMAX. During this forum, the public will have the opportunity to ask the attending experts questions about lionfish threats and management. The symposium, co-sponsored by the Houston Advanced Research Center and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, will host partners

from around Texas and the Gulf of Mexico to develop a unified, proactive and multifaceted approach to managing Texas’ lionfish invasion. Other sponsors include the Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association – Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary, The Nature Conservancy, the Coastal Conservation Association of Texas and Texas Sea Grant. Participants include private industry, universities, government agencies and various non-governmental groups. The public is welcome to join the experts at Moody Gardens located at One Hope Boulevard, Galveston, Texas, 77554. Guests will enter at the Visitor Center building and proceed through the Garden Lobby where the IMAX entry is on the right. The appetizer/drink area will be in the Garden Lobby. Free online registration available; registration appreciated although not required. Visit our Eventbrite page. Doors open at 6 p.m.

Annual Texas Abandoned Crab Trap Removal Dates Set for 2017 Each February for more than 15 years, countless volunteers spend 10 days on the water along the Texas coastline searching the bays for abandoned crab traps left to foul shrimpers’ nets, snag anglers’ lines, “ghost fish,” and create unsightly views. To date, they’ve hauled off more than 32,000 of these derelict traps. Between Feb. 17-26, Texas coastal waters will be closed to crabbing with wire mesh crab traps to facilitate the annual volunteer crab trap cleanup. Any traps left in bays - including traps tied to docks - will be assumed abandoned and considered “litter” under state law. This allows volunteers to legally remove any crab traps they find. Volunteers are needed to assist in the coast-wide effort to remove the numerous traps that have been lost or abandoned since last year’s cleanup. To facilitate volunteer trap removal efforts, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department (TPWD) will provide crab trap drop-off sites at locations in each major bay system along the coast from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Feb. 18, weather permitting. Additionally at all sites, dumpsters or collection areas marked with banners will be available to receive traps for the duration of the closure. Volunteers may focus their efforts

on Feb. 18 or work at their own pace anytime during the closure, but traps cannot be removed prior to Feb. 17 or after Feb. 26. The Coastal Conservation Association Texas, Coastal Bend Bays & Estuaries Program, Galveston Bay Foundation, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service are providing continued support to the crab trap removal program. Numerous other organizations and companies also are volunteering their services. To participate, volunteers may pick up free tarps, gloves, trap hooks and additional information at their local TPWD C o a s t a l Fisheries field stations. TPWD requests that volunteers who remove traps record and submit information about the number of traps they collect as well as documenting any sightings of diamondback terrapins. All other legal means of crabbing will not be affected during the closure period for wire crab traps. For more information, contact your local TPWD Coastal Fisheries office or Zack Thomas at (512) 389-8448.

By Kelly Trevino Regional Director, Corpus Christi Better Business Bureau With spring break just around the corner, people are finalizing their vacation plans. Whether you’re planning a relaxing week on the beach or hitting ski slopes, Better Business Bureau serving Central, Coastal, Southwest Texas, and the Permian Basin advises you do your research before booking your next vacation. If you are looking for an alternative to staying in a hotel, renting someone’s home, condo or apartment may be appealing. Vacation rental websites make it easy to connect directly with property owners who advertise their rentals online. However, BBB warns consumers to watch out for fake rental listings that aren’t actually available or don’t exist at all. Last year, BBB received nearly 1,200 complaints against vacation rentals nationwide. According to data reported to BBB Scam Tracker, Texans reported losing $28,800 last year to rental, travel and vacation-related scams. Scammers contacted victims by phone or through online classifieds, and most victims used a wire transfer service or credit card to make a payment. BBB offers the following tips to ensure you’re planning your vacation with a trustworthy business: Research last-minute travel deals. Bargains on airfare or a hotel may be tempting, but be cautious when booking on an unknown travel website or through an online advertisement. Common travelrelated complaints to BBB reported trouble with reservations, online advertisements and incorrect charges. Before booking any reservation, make sure to read the company’s cancelation and refund policy. Consider travel insurance. Travel insurance is designed to cover such things as trip cancelations or medical emergencies. The U.S. Travel Insurance Association maintains a list of licensed travel insurance companies. Certain travel companies have

different policies and levels of coverage based on whether you purchase the car rental, flight or hotel. Ask questions, and always read the fine print to see what’s covered. Pay with a credit card. Paying with a credit card—rather than by cash or check—gives you additional protection if something were to go wrong with the travel reservation. Verify reservations. Whether you’re staying in a hotel, rental or at a resort, call to confirm all arrangements. Don’t only rely on a receipt or confirmation email. Get all details of your vacation in writing, including contact information, travel itineraries and booking confirmations. Ask about mandatory “resort fees.” Hotels often come with resort fees, usually for services like Internet, fitness facilities and access to the pool. But the extra fees can add to the per night cost of your stay, and are mandatory, regardless of whether or not you use the services. Before you book a hotel reservation online, call the hotel and ask if a resort fee is included in the total cost. Be alert for travel scams. Unsolicited mail, email and websites offering deeply discounted travel packages could leave you out of a vacation and money if you’re not careful. Watch out for scams saying that you have “won a trip.” If you’ve really won a free vacation, a legitimate business won’t ask you to pay any upfront or processing fees. Kelly Trevino is the regional director for the Corpus Christi/Victoria area of Better Business Bureau serving Central, Coastal, Southwest Texas and the Permian Basin. Kelly is available for media interviews and speaking engagements. You can reach her by phone: (361) 945-7352 or email: ktrevino@ corpuschristi.bbb.org.

A large crowd enjoyed 10 games of BINGO and a special intermission heart throb who sang a couple of Elvis and Tom Jones classic tunes. Schlitterbahn has ample parking and is providing two bars and a special menu for BINGO players on Thursday evenings. John Vaughn of the Kiwanis of Padre Island noted, “We had a wonderful crowd this past Thursday evening playing Bingo at the

Blackbird bye bye… They say it comes in threes. Sometimes I feel like there’s a black bird sitting on the back fence…but it’s not all bad news. Our chosen Sandman, Kenny Fain, is still in ICU but is doing much better. He’s off the ventilator and is sitting up and talking. That’s a great improvement from our last report that he was hovering on death’s door. I spoke with his sister Tanya Fain who had just come from the hospital, and though he is still in a guarded condition, was very optimistic about his recovery. Attaboy Kenny, you got this You’ll be out juggling sandballs before you know it. And, I want to offer my sincere condolences to Dale and Jan Rankin on the passing of Dale’s sweet, sweet mother, Sue. God bless this wonderful soul. It’s easy to see where Dale’s strong character comes from. Another friend of ours, Sonny Williams, passed this week. He will be missed at the Shorty’s Breakfast Club. We didn’t see this one coming. It’s time to shoo that blackbird off.

Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines played the Third Coast Theater last Saturday. goals on a daily basis. Plus, she gives much love to her pet dogs. I respect that. Originally from San Antonio, I remember many special moments in her artistic upbringing. Lloyd, too… Mr. Maines is the perfect maestro accompanist to this musical genius. First of all, he’s from Lubbock. Enough said. OK, I’m gushing. Suffice it to say, it was a great show by two real deal people. You should have been there.

Scattered shots… And hey, if you haven’t caught the James Little Band (Corpus Christi, TX) around town

Willie Sahm benefit…

Ulrich and Sabine Ellison play Giggty’s on Friday

The Free Beer Band celebrates their 3rd year of playing every Thursday (7-10) at Giggity’s made of locals and Winter Texans alike. I think it’s pretty cool when the Winter Texan ladies get out there an line dance. Those gals really liven the place up.

DO NOT MISS LIST Coming this weekend…

The James Little Band is a big draw in this area. R.C., Millie and Willie Sahm at Bernie’s Millie Keithley over at Bernie’s put together a nice benefit for our sick buddy Willie Sahm this weekend. Local celebrity drone pilot and BBQ chef, Steve Coons, did a bang-up job of smokin’ the Steve Coons cooked up meat. They had BBQ plates, a some great BBQ for raffle and silent Willie Sahm’s benefit at auction going Bernie’s last weekend. on. Willie is on the mend from tonsil cancer and hasn’t been able to work at Virginia’s, where he’s been for years. I always find it amazing how this community comes together for each other. We truly have a village here.

Terri & Lloyd… It was a great week of live music down here. The GREAT Terri Hendrix (San Marcos, TX) and Lloyd Maines (Austin, TX) graced us with a magnificent show at the Third Coast Theater on Saturday. You won’t find a more polished performance. I’ve been watching both of them perform for decades. Terri is a workaholic with a never ending abundance of talent. She sings, she writes songs, she plays a plethora of string instruments, she teaches, she is an author….she, she, she hung the moon. I know she mentors many and constantly pushes herself with new

at one of the many shows he plays, you are sorely missing. His country music outfit is tight and powerful. I enjoy them at all the venues they play. It’s pretty much straight country right out of a San Antonio honky tonk. It fills the dance floor and keeps the bartenders busy.

Texas Crossing played Giggity’s last week Also, last week we saw the country trio, Texas Crossing, play Giggity’s last week and they were refreshing. They had the lead vocals of Tiffany Valentine at the helm and lead guitar picker Benny Jack in tow. I kept running into Keith Sykes (Memphis, TN) all week, who was in town following his show at Third Coast last week. He was in attendance at the Carol Elliott show at the new Tiki Bar next to Giggity’s for her weekly Happy Hour show every The Chanklas lay a great Friday. Keith island beat at Shorty’s used to play

WOODY’S

On the horizon… The big show on the horizon is the Robert Earl Keen (Bandera, TX) show at Brewster Street on February 17. Robert Keen didn’t do his yearly Christmas show at Brewster this year, so this one ought to be a barn burner. Also on the 17th, Richard Leigh (Nashville, TN) and Larry Joe Taylor (Stephenville, TX) will play Third Coast and the great Bubba Westly will play Gigg’s. On the 18th, watch for Uel Jackson and Todd Dorn and the Sea Drifters. That ought to keep you busy for a while. Be safe out there.

Live Music Tonight

GIGGITY’S RESTAURANT & BAR IN PORT A

You can catch another installment of the Carol Elliott Happy Hour at the Tike Bar next to Giggity’s on Friday (5-7). This winter residency has proved to be a Winter Texan favorite. Her folky repertoire seems to have found an audience with our Northern friends. Also on Friday, songbird Clarissa Serna will play Brewster Street and the great blues rocker, Ulrich Ellison (Austin, TX) will set your hair on fire at Giggity’s. Originally from Vienna, this is possible the hardest working act on the planet. These guys are absolutely everywhere playing, recording CD’s and video’s and working the nation and Europe. Ulrich actually has two masters degrees in music and his band, The Tribe, has won many recent prestigious Austin

Music Awards. I’m very fond of these guys. On Saturday, Ruben Limas and the Rolling J’s (Corpus Christi, TX) will bring his folk and classic rock to Gigg’s and Billy Snipes and the Rasta Cowboys will play Shorty’s. You can’t go wrong there. And finally, The Georges (San Antonio, TX) will bring their unique sound to the South Texas Ice House. This band is led by the great Dennis Fallon of Two Tons of Steel fame.
