Backwater Adventures

By Jay Gardner

By Joey Farah Farah’s Fishing Adventures Every year I hear random folks making their predictions whether the nature’s roll through the seasons is early, late, or right on time. Mother Nature is probably

project.

Small changes in jig head size can change the effectiveness of the same bait quickly. DOA GRUB AND JIG HEADS

Fun time drifting for these two guys holding a few limits of trout. Laguna Shores pumpkinseed DOA shads

in hopes of enticing a strike from a big mature fish. The difference in presentation between a heavier jig head compared to a light one has let me match my technique to the fishes feeding intensity. The light and floating action of plastic

more consistent than anyone or anything we know. This year I have seen a good two to three a week jump on spring activity in the bay’s. Warm winter temps tires along with a enormous population of healthy game fish is giving us extraordinary fishing that just never slowed down. The black drum have already started to move in a little early, the swarms of bait and bottom fish are also about to pour in with the incoming tide this week along with the full moon. The waters along the King Ranch will be teaming with hungry trout along with some Giants. Down south the rocks of Baffin are so full of fish that every trip down there we are catching limits of drum along with trout. Anglers on the jetties are smashing good trout in Port A on the north side and sheephead and pompano are already thick. This year is defiantly going to be one of greatness; all you have to do is walk out the door!

The big sheephead run is just starting along both jetties, easy and fun! But hard to clean! bait with a light jig head gives dormant fish a chance to stare at the bait and talk themselves into eating it. When it’s on, the heavier head allows me to get long casts out and cover a lot of water and keep the bait right in their face. We as anglers get easily set in our choices of preferred tackle. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try something new.

Limit of trout drifting those close flats you stare at every day on the way home. Soft plastics for trout is some of the finest fishing in our area.

Don’t forget the reasons we don’t live in the bushes somewhere! Get out and get WET! Pick up that phone and give me a call for those open dates this month, let’s go have an adventure! Joey Farah 361-442-8145.

Anyone who wants to improve their skills and knowledge of the area would grow as an angler tenfold by taking a weekday fishing clinic. The weekday fishing clinic trips are $200 off normal cost! The expense of long runs and live bait are not an issue so we can spend more time concentrating on presentation, strategy, structure, and fish behavior. Give me a call and book your day now, I’ve got about 8 days this month I can get you in. Invite friends, family, or your best customers and let’s go catch some fish! The water conditions in the Upper Lagoon are poor today with the lowest tides of the year just behind us. This will change very quickly and you will see a big rush of green water to come in with the full moon next week. With it masses of bait and game fish are going to flood the area. Sight casting to the sandy pockets in 2-5ft of water everywhere in the bay will be the funnest soft plastic fishing of the year. We are catching 100 fish a day and culling trout limits on plastic pretty easy. The Perth it’s to learn how each bait style works and be able to see the action in the clear water is priceless. My “go to” bait has been the DOA Cal Shad3” this bait catches fish all day. When the bite gets hot I’ll move over to a larger bait like the 5”jerk bait or the Airhead,

On the Rocks

Our favorite researcher at the HRI – Center for Sportfish Science and Conservation, Kesley Gibson, has begun fieldwork on her next exciting You loyal readers remember that

Kesley is heavily involved with tagging sharks with satellite tags and tracking them around the Gulf of Mexico and beyond (check out some of the current sharks being tracked at www.sportfishcenter.org like Madeline, a 10 foot, 300lb tiger shark that is bumping around offshore of Texas right now). Kesley’s latest project is tagging red snapper at the MU-775 reef (Packery Channel reef for you locals), and implanting them with internal acoustic tags, as well as green external tags that have a specific number on it. She would greatly appreciate that if you are out there snapper fishing and catch one, that you carefully note the number of the tag, and release the fish immediately. Please contact her at info@ sportfishresearch.org or 361-825-3071 and let her know that you caught and released one of her “subjects.” The goal here is to figure out which type of habitat these local fish gravitate towards and use the best. You’ll remember that there was a bunch of concrete culverts, The Kinta, and of course my favorite, the pyramids, that were sank out there over the past few years. Once we figure out which type of habitat they prefer, we can all start reefing that type of structure in the future. Then again, maybe she will figure out that they like all the habitats, and use them differently during different times of the day, or during different seasons. I look forward to the results! Please make sure to release those tagged fish, and if you happen to catch one that doesn’t have the external tag and you don’t figure it out until it hits the cleaning table and you discover the internal tag, please give her a shout so she can collect the tag from you.

Also on the conservation front, Matt sent me a note that the rules have changed and notices have gone up south of the border in Playa Bagdad regarding illegal fishing practices. Mexican lancha’s will be denied entry into American ports, despite conditions. This is due to Mexico’s recent negative certification due to the government not taking appropriate corrective action regarding their fishermen poaching our waters. I’m not sure that very many lancha captains typically plan on coming in to our ports, but knowing that that is no longer an option if things turn dicey may get some to thinking twice about it. The most important thing in the notice is the reminder that “vessels that enter any place in the US remain subject to inspection.” I’m pretty sure that most, if not all of the lanchas that enter our waters would fail a USCG inspection miserably. It’s a step in the right direction. And in even more conservation news, I’m happy to report that the Friends of the Rio Grande Valley Reef (initiated by CCA-RGV members) have amassed a large amount of reefing material, and have let out an request for qualifications (RFQ, basically for contractors to bid) for ocean-going tugs to reef the material. The Glick brothers and crew have been hard at work scrounging material and monetary donations to get the recently approved, huge, 1600 acre site populated with reefing materials. They’re getting closer every day, and CCATexas just supported them with additional

funds. Shoot me an email at tarponchaser@ mail.com and I’ll fill you in on “the rest of the story”. Well folks, the water FINALLY dropped out of the bay systems. The low tides are running about a month behind again this year. I’m betting that Packery scoured out big time with that last push that brought 55 mph westerly winds and more allergens than I could deal with. My nose is STILL running. I’ll see you all next week On the Rocks.

Island Senator Named Vice Chair of Finance Committee Senate committee assignments for the 85th Legislative Session were announced this week and Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa, who represents The Island in the area south of Packery Channel, will serve as Vice Chair of the Senate Finance Committee and on the Senate Transportation Committee. He will continue his appointments to the Senate Committees on Natural Resources and Economic Development, and Agriculture, Water and Rural Affairs. He also continues to serve on the Sunset Advisory Commission. Senator Hinojosa’s continued appointment as Vice Chair of Senate Finance and his new appointment to the Transportation Committee secures his influential leadership position and his significant impact on the state budgetwriting process that will benefit our South Texas region. Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa issued the following statement: “I am honored to serve as Vice Chair of Senate Finance and that Lt. Governor Patrick has entrusted me with these important responsibilities. I am also looking forward to serving on the Transportation Committee, as transportation is the lifeblood of our economy. South Texas is increasingly playing a larger role in shaping our state’s future and I am committed to protecting funds for our local communities. There is no question that this session will be challenging as state revenues are much lower than in past years. However, we must fund education and essential healthcare services, invest in our youth and workforce through education and skills training, create more jobs, and invest in the infrastructure we need for future success. Through these appointments I am able to put South Texas at the forefront of critical discussions and negotiations that will take place this session. I look forward to working with my Senate colleagues to bring forth viable solutions that will benefit our Texas families.”

Senator Juan “Chuy” Hinojosa proudly represents the counties of Nueces, Jim Wells, Brooks, and Hidalgo (part). Senator Hinojosa served as the Senate President Pro Tempore of the Texas Senate in the 84th Texas Legislature. Senator Hinojosa currently serves as ViceChairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, and serves on the Senate Committees on Natural Resources & Economic Development; Transportation; Agriculture, Water & Rural Affairs as well as the Sunset Advisory Commission.

Senate Finance Considers Education Budget The Senate Finance Committee began agency hearings on Tuesday, and first on the list was the Texas Education Agency. Committee Chair Jane Nelson said that’s no accident. “Public education is critical to the future of our state and I think we need to send a real clear message about our priorities,” she told colleagues. In the Senate’s first pass at the state budget, filed as SB1, Texas would spend more than $55 billion in state and federal funds on public education. That includes $2.6 billion more to pay for enrollment growth of an estimated 165,000 more students in the upcoming biennium. The committee heard from TEA Commissioner Mike Morath, who laid out his priorities and requests for additional funding. Morath started with high-quality pre-kindergarten funding. A major priority of Governor Greg Abbott last session, the Legislature created a new pre-k grant program which Morath said has expanded access to pre-k to about 159,000 students. Morath sees that as a good investment . “It is much cheaper to address the achievement gap if we never let it start,” he said. “With a strong foundation for all kids, remediation costs in future years should decline.” He testified that 40 percent of Texas five-year-olds aren’t ready to learn the most basic lettering and numbering exercises when they enter kindergarten. Though the base budget includes $32 million more to expand high quality pre-k programs, Morath asked for $118 million so that districts can receive full grant funding for the entire 20182019 biennium. Another priority for the commissioner is improving state data systems and Internet infrastructure. Morath said that the current system is fragmented and inadequate to provide full data security for the state’s 18 million student records, past and present. By updating or consolidating the 72 active data systems related to public education in Texas, the state can save money. “If we can cut the time that a data clerk spends managing data by five percent, that has ramifications in the multiple millions of dollars,” he said. Morath asked the committee to approve $25 million for an initiative with the potential to draw down nine dollars in federal funds for every dollar spent on new fiber optics infrastructure to bring broadband to every school district in Texas. Education Committee Chair Larry Taylor of Friendswood agreed with him. “This is a great equalizer. When we get broadband access to every campus across Texas, that brings in all these on-line resources,” he said. “It just opens up a whole plethora of opportunities for us to move education into the 21st century.” This is the last year that the federal government is offering this program, Taylor added, so if the state misses the opportunity future Legislatures could have to pay the full price for broadband infrastructure. Morath said there are 536 districts in Texas that could use this matching fund program.

STATE Domestic Violence Awareness Time for Action

By Todd Hunter, District 32

This week’s article is focusing on Domestic Violence Awareness and encouraging ideas for help in its prevention. Domestic violence is defined as the willful intimidation, assault, and/or abusive behavior of an intimate partner to establish power and control over the other partner. Domestic violence offenders use physical, sexual, emotional, and/or psychological abuse or violence to establish and maintain power and control over their victims. Some examples of these actions include intimidation, coercion, threats, social or economic isolation, and/or belittlement. Anyone can be a victim of domestic violence. There are no exceptions based on background, economic status, gender, age, and/or ethnicity. In the United States (US), 1 in 4 Americans experience at least one of these abusive actions by their partner. In Texas, more than five million people will experience domestic violence in their lifetime. Additionally, there are over 150 deaths each year in Texas due to domestic violence. Besides the direct effects on the victim, domestic violence affects the victims’ families. For instance, families are torn apart due to denial or fear. Children who witness violence are at a much higher risk of experiencing violent relationships throughout their lives. If this violent pattern is unaddressed, it can last for several generations. The trauma of the abuse also affects the victims’ relationships with peers and ability to resume their daily tasks due to their depleted mental and/or physical health. Victims of domestic violence often live in fear, need health care for injuries, or develop post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Sadly, between the injuries and/or fleeing their abuser, victims can accumulate a noticeable amount of absences from work and/or school. Because of domestic violence in the US, large sums are spent each year on medical costs and lost productivity hours. Educating ourselves and our peers to recognize domestic violence and familiarizing ourselves with the available resources for victims is a constructive start to end domestic violence. The National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (http://ncadv.org), the Texas Council on Family Violence (http://tcfv.org), and the Texas Advocacy Project (http://www. texasadvocacyproject.org) websites all contain excellent materials on current statistics and information about domestic violence and they provide resources to help regarding this issue.

Also, a good contact is the National Domestic Violence Hotline and the number is 1-800799-SAFE(7233). Each of these resources is confidential and provides efficient ways to report any domestic violence concerns. This legislative session, the Texas Legislature will review current domestic violence laws. Improved and/or new legislation will be introduced to prevent, mitigate, and eliminate domestic violence in our state. If you have ideas, then let us know. If you have questions regarding any of the information mentioned in this week’s article, please do not hesitate to call my Capitol or District Office. Please always feel free to contact my office if you have any questions or issues regarding a Texas state agency, or if you would like to contact my office regarding constituent services. As always, my offices are available at any time to assist with questions, concerns or comments (Capitol Office, 512463-0672; District Office, 361-949-4603). - State Representative Todd Hunter, District 32 Rep. Hunter represents Nueces County (Part). He can be contacted at todd.hunter@house. texas.gov or at 512-463-0672

WINT E R T EX A N R OUND-U P ! Letters from Frostbite Betty

The beautiful snow is melting here in the subarctic, running right down the driveway in little rivers, making rutted slush out of what we were driving on just fine for months. This is a big January Thaw. We often get a little wave of it in Frostbite Falls, but this is heroic. Bert and I had gone to the city for a few days, it being Susie’s sixth birthday and all. She got a disco ball and a princess dress, so it was dance party time! Big brother Olaf decorated a gift box for her with two big rolls of toilet paper inside. Dad: You gave her toilet paper? Olaf: But this is HERS. My big day for the weekend was walking to the

Capitol in St Paul. With 90,000 other people. We just kept coming. For a couple hours. Just like those melty snow rivers. All these regular people like me, same and different, all ages, many stories. One speaker I read about later from a different rally talked about her grandmother’s three-bone lesson. Wishbone for hoping, jawbone for speaking up, and backbone to keep you standing through whatever might come. I felt like we all had the bones working that day, all wanting life to work out for all the other regular people all around the world. Hoping, speaking up, and standing up for it. I was touched and buoyed up. Y’all keep on hoping for the best. Cheers from Betty and Bert

New Year’s resolutions for safeguarding your important information By Kelly Trevino Regional Director, Corpus Christi Better Business Bureau As the end of January approaches, New Year’s resolutions are in full swing for many. Exercising and eating healthy are the most common resolutions—but what shape are your finances and personal information in? In addition to eating clean, joining a gym or cleaning out your closet, Better Business Bureau advises consumers to consider other resolutions, such as keeping a clean computer, checking your credit report and taking proactive steps to protect yourself against identity theft and scams. Your BBB offers the following tips for protecting your personal and financial information:

Research, research, research. Whether you’re making an online purchase, looking for a vacation rental or choosing a contractor, it’s important to carefully research all of your options. Ask people you trust for recommendations, shop on secure and legitimate websites and look out for red flags to avoid getting scammed out of your money. Remember, keep receipts and get everything in writing when working with a business. Go to bbb.org to view a business’s BBB Business Profile which includes its rating, customer reviews and complaint history. Protect your identity—and your wallet. Always shred sensitive documents that include personal financial information such as your bank account number, credit card and Social Security number. Monitor your financial accounts regularly to quickly detect suspicious activity. Be especially careful when disclosing personal information over the Internet, don’t overshare and never send sensitive information through emails or text messages.

Create a budget. Setting a budget that works for you can help ease any financial stress and worry in the upcoming year. While you’re shopping, keep track of the cost and avoid impulse purchases to prevent over-spending. Also, know who or what you are shopping for and how much you are willing to spend. Never wire money to someone you don’t know. Scammers know it’s extremely difficult to track money sent via MoneyGram or Western Union, so never wire money to someone you don’t know. More troubling for victims is the fact that it’s nearly impossible to get your money back once it’s been sent via wire. Even if you’ve been given a check to cover the amount you’re wiring, never send money to someone you don’t know personally. The check could be fraudulent, leaving you liable for the money. Check your credit report. An annual review of your credit report is important to verify all outstanding debts and helpful in maintaining a strong protection against identity theft. For a free copy of your credit report, go to AnnualCreditReport.com. Only AnnualCreditReport.com is authorized to give you the free annual credit reports you’re entitled to by law. Kelly Trevino is the regional director for the Corpus Christi/Victoria area of Better Business Bureau serving Central, Coastal, Southwest Texas and the Permian Basin. Kelly is available for media interviews and speaking engagements. You can reach her by phone: (361) 945-7352 or email: ktrevino@ corpuschristi.bbb.org.

For the Birds!

Birdiest City to host Expo Finally, Corpus Christi--named “Birdiest City” for a decade--introduces its own birding festival April 20-23, based at the South Texas Botanical Gardens & Nature Center. Big news indeed, since as former Mayor Joe Adame put it in a congratulatory e-mail, many birders travel with “high dollar cameras and binoculars and spend money--an international classy ecotourism market!” The ‘new bird

on the block’, logically named BIRDIEST FESTIVAL IN AMERICA, uniquely centers around spring migration, featuring six talks, 12 field trips, The Raptor Project, vendor tent, arts & crafts booths. Basic registration is $35, with field trips priced separately.

Interestingly, RV travel and ownership continue to grow in popularity – including in Texas - with 7.2 million RVs on the nation’s roads. And, the local boating segment is seeing similar upticks. 22% of Texas households participate in recreational boating annually, and with more than 600,000 registered boats, the Lone Star state ranks sixth in boating activity in the country. A continued trend in the RV and marine industry - it’s not just retirees or older folks hitting the open road or the water as younger families are making this type of fun happen. “Today’s record RV ownership levels reflect the enduring appeal of the recreational lifestyle despite recent economic challenges. The biggest difference is that younger families are making RVing a priority in their lives because they realize it is a cost-effective and fun way to spend time with family and friends,” says

She adds, “Texas has more square miles of state coastal water than any other continuous state in the U.S. So, it makes perfect sense that families will want to find a way to have fun in the sun on the water.”

On the water … The 2017 Expo will feature hundreds of bay and offshore powerboats, luxury cruisers, fishing boats and personal watercraft. So whether your adventure includes fighting for the big catch out in the Gulf, jumping the waves on your personal water craft, cruising around the lake at a serene pace or paddling yourself to wherever you want to go, expo-goers will be able to find it all.

On the open road … The three-day show features a great selection of gas and diesel motor homes, travel trailers, campers, fifth wheels, travel trailers and accessories for outdoor adventurers. Owning a camper gives you the freedom to travel and explore any time of the year. Who wants to stay in a strange hotel when you can travel in the comfort of your own space and at your own pace? Sleep in! There’s no check out time here.

Playing with toys and accessories … Already own a boat or RV? Then the 6th Annual Coastal Bend Expo is the perfect place to outfit your boat or ride with a new sound system, GPS system, fishing or wakeboard tower. Or you can gear up with hottest new kayaks, wakeboards, tubes and towing equipment. Whatever outdoor adventure you want to do, expo-goers can see the latest boat and RV accessories hot off the factory line including sewer and water hoses, awnings, lights and power poles, as well as rocking chairs and more!

Handsome Sailor burns… The Handsome Sailor Palapa Bar in Conn Brown Harbor was destroyed in a massive fire

Virginia’s Restaurant for many years. The event will be held from 1-5 PM. His course of treatment has not only left him unable to work but his absence from home has created unhealthy living conditions. There will be a raffle, 50/50 drawing, silent auction and bbq plates for sale. Also, a “Go Fund Me” account under Willie Sahm Emergency Fund has bee set up. Contact Millie Keithley for additional info at 361-563-9025. And on Saturday, the 28th, the Port A VFW will have a benefit for Tom Lovetts to help his family bury him. This will be at 2:00 PM. Tom was the owner of the storied Lovett’s Bar on Alister.

Scattered shots…

The Handsome Sailor Palapa Bar and Marina on Conn Brown Harbor in Aransas Pass burned down in the high winds last Sunday. last Sunday when winds blustered to 50 mph. I spoke with proprietors, Tom and Linda Doran, and apparently the fire started on the other side of the harbor and jumped 250 yards to the other side. The facility is also a marina and docks 30 sailboats of which none were harmed. The m a r i n a l u c k e d out… not the palapa bar, the stage or any of the structures, e x c e p t for the restrooms and shower. Their son’s Tom Doran lost his Handsome car wasn’t so lucky Sailor palapa bar to fire on either. I Sunday. went out there on Monday, and I gotta say, it was one hot mess. Tom and Linda started this project in 2008 and except for the 40 foot high palapa, did all the work themselves mostly using recycled building materials. Tom told me that they weren’t insured but they remain undaunted. In fact, as of this writing on Tuesday, he had actually sold one beer. He said the fire was an amazing sight to behold. It all happened so fast and there were fires all over Aransas Pass. They have plans to rebuild and will eventually get the music going again. I’ll let you know when we get a benefit going for them. These are good people and hard workers. Tom also has a Handsome Sailor sailing charter at the marina.

Carol Elliott’s show in the new “Tiki Room” at Giggity’s went very well. She put on a marvelous show to a full house of mostly Winter Texans. Is was a nice, warm e nv i r o n m e n t without pesky Carol Elliott played the c i g a r e t t e Tiki Room at Giggity’s last s m o k e . Friday She will be performing every Friday happy hour until at least March. BTW, the food is great over there. I also caught shows by Todd Dorn and the Sea Drifters, Selfie, James Little, Red Giant and the PA Rockers last week. I loved the country shows from Todd Dorn and James Little. I think to co-book these guys together would be an outstanding show. I love country music and

The PA Rockers pack the house at Bernie’s every Wednesday the throws of their winter residency and the snowbirds are digging it. It’s like a 40 year high school reunion every Wednesday. Is it just me

is best known for co-writing Volcano, a hit for Jimmy Buffett, and other songs recorded by John Prine, The Judds, Jerry Jeff Walker, George Thorogood, and Roseanne Cash among others. Without a doubt, Keith Sykes is the real deal. I truly miss the days out at the

The James Little Band with Chris Hays on guitar played the 361 Bar last Friday or has anyone else noticed a similarity of how these old farts all dance the same? I call it the Winter Texan shuffle. Hey, everyone is having fun and that’s all that matters. It’s also a lot of fun with the Free Beer Band every Thursday at Giggity’s. I especially like it when our Northern ladies line dance to Copperhead Road.

DO NOT MISS LIST Coming this weekend… The show to catch on Friday is Duke E. Brown (Corpus Christi, TX) at Giggity’s. Led by the talented Steve Santos, this unit is an old school R&B/Soul/Blues band that gets the dance floor fired up every time. If you like horns and swinging guitars, you will love these fellows. On Saturday, the great Keith Sykes (Memphis, TN) will play the Third Coast Theater. Keith is an extraordinary performer and songwriter… not to mention a nice guy and a really funny guy. His on-stage persona is a free flowing stream of semi-goofy self satire off the top of his head which kept the audience laughing and on their toes. Keith Sykes processes his thoughts like a man who takes note of every single moment of life’s travels. He has a slightly twisted insight that makes me think his every waking thought is the potential line to his next song. You can literally see his mind working. And his songs are a delightful play on words that yield wonderfully engaging stories and bounce around in perfect sync with his nimble guitar riffs. He has released eleven recordings since 1969 but I especially like his soulful Bucksnort Blues. Sykes, a native of Kentucky,

Keith Sykes will play Third Coast on Saturday. lighthouse with Lighthouse Rick when Keith and the late Chuck Pyle would break out their guitars on the porch. Good times!!! I’d get my tickets early to this one folks. Also on Saturday, the great Ruben Limas and his band of Rolling J’s (Corpus Christi, TX) will play Giggs. Ruben is always a crowd pleaser. He’s like a cross between Bob Dylan and Tom Petty. Plus on Saturday, the soulful singer-songwriter Ty Dietz will play Shorty’s. Ty has been playing with Steve Santos on guitar the last couple of months and that marriage works pretty darn good. I highly recommend Mr. Dietz… over and over and over. That ought to keep you busy for a while. Be safe out there.
