plan to have a sober driver. D.W.I.’s are the worst hangovers.

The Corpus Christi Police are pleased to announce that there were no injuries or fatalities on Corpus Christi roadways over the Christmas weekend due to intoxicated driving, partly because of strict enforcement by Officers which got many intoxicated drivers off the road before they could injure someone.

December 21, 2016

Corpus Christi Police arrested 15 people for intoxicated driving from December 23rd to December 26th. Officers arrested:

Spoil island fire The Corpus Christi fire department and police department responded to the area of Whitecap and Bonasse Court in reference to a fire. When they arrived they discovered that there was a brushfire on an island in the bay. Due to the location of the fire the fire department is unable to reach it so the decision has been made to let it burn itself out. The fire posed no danger to the public. Island Police Calls

effective,“ said Paulette Kluge, the CC CVB’s CEO. “ It was important to us that these signs be reflective of our city, while at the same time reduce the clutter of signage as you entered city beaches.”

The new signs stem from a project by the City’s Parks and Recreation Department, the City’s Watershore and Beach Advisory Committee and the Corpus Christi Convention and Visitors Bureau (CC CVB) to create uniform and comprehensive signage at city beaches.

City Parks and Recreation Department staff will install the signs at all city beaches during the next few months.

“For years we have had a variety of signs that come in all shapes and sizes and fonts and we thought it was time to take these messages and combine them into something clearer for the public to understand,” said Stacie Talbert Anaya, Interim Parks and Recreation Director. “We asked the CVB to lend us a hand from the creative perspective and then worked with our Watershore and Beach Advisory Committee to ensure that the messaging was appropriate.” The signs highlight beach rules as well as designated parking areas where beach permits are required. The signs also use fonts and colors inspired by the City and CC CVB’s branding. “We think these signs are both beautiful and

Thank you for allowing me the privilege of once again serving the people of House District 32. I am proud to be a voice for the Coastal Bend and look forward to continuing that role during the 85th Texas Legislative Session, which begins on Tuesday, January 10, 2017. During the 84th Legislative Session in 2015, the Speaker of the Texas House appointed me as Chairman of the House Calendars Committee. This proved to be an important appointment for the Coastal Bend. I was also appointed to serve as Vice-Chairman of Urban Affairs as well as on the committees for Redistricting, General Investigating and Ethics and Criminal Jurisprudence. Additionally, I was appointed to co-chair the Joint Interim Committee on Cruise Industry Development and serve on the Joint Interim Committee on Advertising Public Notices. Over the past year and a half, I have been proud to help organize a number of summits and conferences in and around the Coastal Bend, which provided an unique opportunity to discuss the key issues facing the state of Texas. These events covered a number of important issues, including Domestic Violence, Transportation, and Texas Music, to name a few. During this time, I also had the opportunity to attend a number of meetings, forums, and community events throughout the district and hear firsthand from the people of District 32 about the different challenges facing our community as well as ideas and potential solutions. The information gathered during these conversations is essential to the overall legislative process and will be extremely helpful to me as I work to address some of these issues during the upcoming session. As I mentioned, the 85th Legislative Session will commence at noon on January 10, 2017. Session will end on May 29, 2017. The Texas Constitution stipulates that every regular legislative session officially ends 140 days after it starts. The first order of business on opening day will be the swearing-in ceremony for the members. For those that can make it to 3.5” x 2.5” | Maximum Fontlike Size: the Capitol on January 10th, I would to

personally invite you to join us in Austin for the opening day ceremonies. However, if you are unable to join us on opening day, I would still encourage you to visit your Texas Capitol sometime during the legislative session. My office is located on the First Floor of the Texas Capitol building in Room 1W.11. If you are unable to make it to Austin during session, I hope you will continue to stay engaged with my office. Your ideas and information are important forms of feedback and help ensure that the decisions being made will have a positive impact on your daily lives. If you would like to follow the Texas House and learn more information on news, committees or other aspects of the legislative body, you can access its website at http://www.house.state. tx.us/. The site features live streaming from the House floor, committee hearings as well as access to a number of other resources. If you have questions regarding any of the information mentioned in this week’s article, please do not hesitate to call my Capitol or District Office. Please always feel free to contact my office if you have any questions or issues regarding a Texas state agency, or if you would like to contact my office regarding constituent services. As always, my offices are available at any time to assist with questions, concerns or comments (Capitol Office, 512463-0672; District Office, 361-949-4603). - State Representative Todd Hunter, District 32 Rep. Whooping it up

Poll shows nursing homes at tipping point Funding, other issues during legislative session to determine direction of long term care in state Texas nursing homes are underfunded and facing a crisis — but that’s no surprise to Texans. A recent survey conducted by Opinion Access, a NY-based polling firm, thru support from the American Health Care Association shows that 81 percent of Texans agree nursing homes in Texas are facing a crisis because the state is not adequately funding them.

The poll also revealed 80 percent of Texans say they support lawmakers who oppose additional Medicaid cuts to nursing homes and that the state should look elsewhere to balance the budget. “Texans are fiscal conservatives, but they think it’s important to look after the elderly and most vulnerable among us,” Warren said.

“These results are alarming, but not surprising,” said Kevin Warren, president and CEO of the Texas Health Care Association, which advocates for better skilled nursing care. “Texas has shortchanged seniors now for nearly 20 years, and the strain is really starting to show.”

• 58 percent of Texans say they would be less likely to vote for a legislator who voted to cut millions in Medicaid payments to nursing homes and skilled nursing centers

To the 41 percent of Texans who reported visiting a skilled nursing facility in the last year, the issue is personal. The evidence of the state’s chronic underfunding of long term care, is abundant. High staff turnover — as much as 94 percent for registered nurses — means there’s always a new face taking care of loved ones. Current funding levels make it difficult to invest in facility renovations or new equipment. And a recent indepth study of nursing home inspections shows as nursing home care continues to improve across the nation, Texas is lagging. Texas posted a nearly 20-percent increase in the total number of health deficiencies cited in nursing home surveys and a 3-percent increase in severe deficiencies from 2010 to 2014. “Texas can do better than that,” Warren said. “The good news out of this poll is that 74 percent of Texans say funding for nursing homes to care for low-income seniors is just as important as spending on transportation, water and education. We’ve got the will to fix this.”

Other findings from the survey include:

• 79 percent would support a proposal to allow Texas nursing homes to receive additional funding from the federal government without costing the state budget • 65 percent say insurance companies should not be allowed to discontinue contracting with nursing homes possibly forcing residents covered by these companies to move to another facility • 70 percent believe a nursing should be allowed to correct errors before being fined • And 53 percent oppose changing the law to allow someone with a concealed handgun license to carry a concealed handgun in a nursing home Warren said his organization will use this new data as they prepare for the start of the 85th Texas Legislature in January. “We’ve got innovative plans to improve the quality of care in Texas nursing homes that won’t cost a penny of the state’s general fund,” Warren said. “This is a crisis that Texas can easily avoid.”

2016 is toast…

DO NOT MISS LIST

In July the best show I saw was again at the Back Porch when outlaw poet, Billy Joe Shaver (Waco, TX) played. He had just released a new CD and had new band with him. It was a hot, steamy night on the porch and Billy Joe

Coming this weekend…

OK, Christmas is in the rearview and New Years is upon us. Here is my 2016 year in review. The Keith Sykes

Lazy Lester played Antones last April with Derek O’Brien and Grady Pinkerton on guitars and Jay Moeller on drums

Keith Sykes played a special showcase at Shorty’s last January. (Memphis, TN) show he did at Shorty’s last January to showcase ten new songs he had just written in Port A was as cool as it gets. Sykes is a gifted singer-songwriter who also played in Jimmy Buffet’s Coral Reefer Band and penned the Volcano song. He’ll be back at the Third Coast Theater at the end of January. In February, the show of the month was probably the Terri Hendrix and Lloyd Maines (Austin, TX) show at Third Coast. These two seasoned pros are masters at their craft. Terri, a San Antonio native, is a prolific and accomplished songwriter, to say the least. I’ve watch this little sister blossom from the days when she played my open mic at Billy Blues in the 90’s. She is a self man business woman and a beautiful soul. Lloyd is another success story from Lubbock. I met him when he played with Joe Ely in the 70’s. He can play anything with strings on it, but is an absolute master on pedal steel guitar. He is also a much sought after record producer. Terri and Lloyd will be back at the Third Coast

etc made the genre happen. The Fabulous Thunderbirds got famous singing Lazy Lester songs (I’m a Lover Not a Fighter, Sugar Coated Love, etc). I’ve traveled much of the world with Lester. He’s the real deal. In May, the show to catch was the Uncle Lucius (Austin, TX) show at the Back Porch. The lead singer, Kevin Galloway, has a golden voice. The first time I saw Uncle Lucius perform, they did the entire Willy Nelson record, Red Headed Stranger, in entirety and in sequence, without a word of stage banter between songs. It was riveting and

Kevin Galloway and Uncle Lucius played the Back Porch last May.

The Sisters Morales played the Third Coast Theater last March on February 4th. In March, definitely the show of the month was, again, at the Third Coast with the adorable Sisters Morales. They did their “all Spanish” show with GRAMMY award winning percussionist Henry Brun in tow. The sisters, Lisa and Roberta, have a chemistry only granted to sisters. They harmonize like angels and their songs are lively and remarkable. In April I took a little road trip up to the new Antone’s in Austin to see my old friend, Lazy Lester. Lester is one of the pioneers of “swamp blues”. He and Jimmy Reed, Hound Dog Taylor, Lightning Hopkins, Slim Harpo,

made me an immediate fan. They have become quite the sensation wherever they play and have a strong fan base in Port A. In June, Joe King Carrasco set the Back Porch on fire. Joe is the King of Tex-Mex, plain and simple. He’s also a Texas music legend. He’ll be at Giggity’s for New Year’s Eve and you don’t want to miss that. In July, the Dirty River Boys (El Paso, TX) played the Back Porch and you would have needed a shoe horn to get any more people in. This is string band with light acoustics and five part harmonies. They all play all the instruments and are master musicians. I love this band.

was in rare form. In August, the Austin Music Hall of Fame band, Greezy Wheels played Shorty’s. Led by the Hattersleys, Cleve and Sweet Mary, these Austin icons were key in developing the “Live Music Capital of the World”. In September, Paul Fain of Tarpon Ice House fame, had a house concert in his front yard with ex-Tarpon luminary, Uel Jackson, Sierra Jackson and Dennis Sullivan and it was great. All three of those guys are great on their own, but together it was pure magic. None of them live in Port A anymore, so it was a special treat to see them again. In October, The Roselly’s (Bristol, UK) and The Lavens (San Antonio, TX) played Giggity’s. These are two family bands that have bonded at the hip. It was the second time they played Giggs and it was fantastic. The Roselly’s call themselves “British Americana” and I’d say that’s pretty close. There was a lot of music in the room that night. In November, San Antonio icon, Michael Martin, played Shorty’s and it was amazing, Michael is the founder of the Infadels and is a household word in S.A. He came with his longtime accompanist, George Batista, and gave me a walk down memory lane. And as for December, the jury is still out, but my money is on Joe King Carrasco for New Year’s at Giggity’s.

On Thursday, Kyle Park is at Brewster. On Friday, blues rocker Ulrich Ellison and Tribe (Austin, TX) will play Giggity’s, Aaron Watson is at Brewster and Somethin’ Silky is at Treasure Island. Also, Richard Tondre will play the 361. On New Year’s the big show is at Giggity’s with Joe King, Treasure Island has DJ, the 361 Bar has the hilarious Mike and Ken show Unrehearsed and Unashamed, and the Wild Horse will have “casino night” with a big dinner buffet. Also on New Year’s, the Chanklas will play Shorty’s and Bri Bagwell will play the South Texas Ice House. Be safe out there, it’s all drunks and cops this weekend.
