Backwater Adventures had to drink and that went fast. Getting close to sundown that next day we started to pack up and walk through the ranch north towards civilization. We were yards from the brush and we could hear his small engine coming closer. As he pulled up I emptied my shot gun at his boat spraying it with pellets and tried to leave him there and take his boat. We kept him alive but only to torture him for years for that night. When the cold really set in we would eventually find a good holding area of fish and just wear them out! A few kids in an aluminum boat were ignored by game wardens and sportsmen, little did they know we usually had the floor of the boat full of fur and feathers. How many ducks can you stuff into a 5-fallen bucket? 14. Everyone had a chair! These days there are a lot more people around enjoying Old Mother Lagoon and the understanding of lead and rules means a lot more to everyone. The adventure of the wild Laguna Madre still trumps any wrapped gift under the tree or video game. Take some time and build an adventure with your friends and kids this holiday. Start a tradition of your holiday hunting or fishing trip. The drums are really getting thick in their seasonal haunts and the redfish have been falling off into deeper water when the hard fronts push in. Deciding close to the JFK and along the ICW is a great way to catch trout right now and is best on those warm mornings. The whiting and sand trout are crazy thick in the Port A and Packery channels. There are no limits of size or quantity on them and they love small baits and hooks. I like to catch a perch or two on shrimp then fillet and dice into small squares. I even chum the water to get them fired up. There has been some giant flounder holding in the Whitecap Canals, soft plastics and live shrimp along the bank have been what they like most. The drums are in full winter patterns and easy to target down south, most every trip we are catching limits. The rocky bottoms of Baffin and oyster shell of the northern bays are where you will find them. Fresh dead shrimp or live on a Carolina rig. The next few weeks are when the bays turn over. The warm water on the bottom will flip up to the surface and trout will have to move around searching for the warmest places they can find. Only a few degrees can make the difference and afternoon sun on the shallows sends those biggest trout up looking to feed on baitfish capturing the afternoon heat. These are the days to explore and learn, without the abundance of boats. Watch the weather and call me to build your get away adventure. Merry Christmas and thank you for putting up with all my dumb stories. We are all truly blessed to live along the edge of the ocean.

By Joey Farah Farah’s Fishing Adventures That magical time of Christmas break brought up some of my favorite memories of my youth. Not so much the tree and the gifts, except for that First BB gun when I was five. The adventures of all day every, day exploring on the Laguna Madre and no school. Hunting ducks, deer and hogs along the wild banks of the King Ranch and the back side of the Island turned us into RAMBO. The Ducks were so thick that rafts of them would stretch from Flour Bluff to the island across the flats and south all the way to Pure Oil with no place

The coldest conditions have been pulling reds off of the shallow flats and into the ICW. Live shrimp and DOA soft plastics. Land Cut. to land. Of course my dad Joe was an offshore underwater diver and would be gone for weeks at a time. The moment he we would tell mom that he said we could use the shot guns if we cleaned them every day and put them back in the cabinet. At first word of him on his way home we would abort all hunting missions for the next few days and clean up all evidence. We thought we were getting away with what my dad surely knew. I remember my hunting partner Nick and I planned an overnight hunting expedition in a marsh along the King Ranch. His friend James had somehow let him go with us and take his boat. We hunted a while and killed one duck and ate most of the snacks. About sundown James says,” I have to go home and check in with my mom.” We said no way but he insisted, and promised to be right back. As his boat disappeared into the distance I realized that all the food was in his boat. We waited there and a few hours after dark I was already planning my revenge. That night we froze in our sleeping bags as wild hogs dug up the grass all around us while we clutched our shot guns. Morning broke to cold and clear and no sign of James. We built a fire and cooked the duck with a can of cream of something soup. One Big Red was what we

On the Rocks

Here’s your South Padre Island beach report. The surf is running 3 rows at 2 feet high. The current is running heavily from north to south at almost 2 knots. The surf is dirty from the current. No color change can be seen from the beach. The surf has been coming to the base of the dunes at high tide, which makes driving excellent during low tide. There has been some slight erosion of the coppice dunes due to the high tides. Shelling is excellent with many types of shells washing in, the main ones being the incongruous arc shells. There are also many quahogs, disc dosinias, and false angel wings. Pumice and sea beans are occasional. Portuguese man’o war are few to moderate. Birding is slow, with the usual suspects including sanderlings, laughing gulls, and herring gulls. Fishing appears to be slow to bad with nothing observed being caught. The sky is mostly cloudy with a light northeast wind at 5-10 mph. Air temperature is 65 degrees, with the sea water temperature a few degrees less than that. Shotgun shell wads are occasional to locally abundant. Driftwood is fair, with mostly small pieces. Syringes are few to rare. Black mangrove seeds are fair to occasionally abundant. Used lighters are common, as well as most plastics. Beer cans and bottles are excellent, being both locally abundant and scattered. Ghost crabs are few, and moving slowly when encountered. Used cyalume light sticks are rare. Cigarette butts and cigar filters are many. Sharks teeth are rare to absent. Sand dollars are absent. Sea whip is occasional, with bunches being found up on the higher beach. Red mangrove seeds are absent. Well loyal readers, we’re in the home stretch for the end of 2016. Drop me a line at tarponchaser@mail.com and I’ll see you on the rocks.

Notes from Nueces By Brent Chesney Nueces County Commissioner Precint 4

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Let me take a moment to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Despite all the struggles this country has had we are still the greatest country on Earth. I believe that with all my heart and feel blessed to live and work in this country and in Nueces County. My message this month is a

short one but nonetheless still important. Let us all take a moment to remember those we have lost, those that serve our country and those who have served our country. Many of those serving our country are not home for the holidays with their loved ones but remain firmly in my prayers and hopefully in yours. As 2016 winds to a close let us always remember and never forget that Jesus is the reason for the season. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Let’s make it a great one. Please call on me for any help at Brent.Chesney1@nuecesco.com or 361888-0268.

Save the Date for Night at the Races

The Padre Island Rotary is presenting their popular “Night at the Races”. The event is Saturday, January 28, at the Veranda at Schlitterbahn, beginning at 6:00. Ticket price is $35.00, which includes appetizer buffet and a cash bar with Happy Hour prices all evening. Tickets are being sold at Schlitterbahn, and by all Rotary Members.

You will watch actual races shown on multiple TV’s around the restaurant. You will place your bets at three betting windows then proceed to cheer your horse to win. There will be 8 races with ten horses in each race. You will bet on them with $1,000.00 in funny money that you will receive upon entrance. During the evening, if you run out of the funny money, you can always buy more. You will also be able to buy a horse each race for $20.00. There will be 10 sold at each race. If that horse wins, you win $100 and a bottle of champagne to share with your friends. At the end of the evening you turn your winnings in for raffle tickets for some great prizes. Your admission ticket will have a door prize stub on it that you will drop in the bucket upon entering. We will be calling numbers throughout the night for some good prizes as well. This is a really fun night on the Island. Get up, shake off the cold and come join us at The Races. We also welcome our Winter Texans to join in the fun. Follow us on Facebook and the Island Moon as we approach the event. We are looking for some race sponsors and food sponsors. You will get your monies worth by being m e n t i o n e d throughout the evening as well as having your signs and/or banners posted around the room. The Padre Island Rotary is a service group.

We raise funds and spend the majority of our monies in the local community. We support the Adoption Awareness Picnic program that pairs local foster children in our area with vetted families for adoption; we support Interact, which is the high school equivalent of Rotary. This program has been thriving at Flour Bluff High school for years. There are over 100 members. Our club has several members that work as sponsors along with a school sponsor. We give out a number of scholarships throughout the year for academia and community services. We support RYLA which is a rotary sponsored Youth Leadership Camp. We pay for up to 3 selected Interact members to attend each year. We supply them with their club shirts, and snacks for their meeting. Another favorite program is our Women’s Shelter Birthday Party. Each month we check with the local women’s shelter and find out how many of the children have birthdays. Our members pick up pizzas, several birthday cakes, drinks and age appropriate gifts for each birthday child. We also support Timon’s Ministries back pack and tennis shoe program. Our International side is always helping to raise money to eradicate Polio throughout the world. We are at 99.9% Polio free. We are currently partnering with several other Corpus Christi Rotary Clubs to support a health clinic in Haiti. There are well over 100,000 Rotary clubs around the globe all working to give back to their communities and to make the world a better place for everyone. We all work with each other when and where we can. Thank you for helping us to help those who need it.

During Holiday Season Check Unclaimed Property By Todd Hunter, District 32

Texas is currently holding about $4 billion in cash and other valuables waiting for their rightful owners to claim. The Texas Comptroller estimates that one in four residents of the State of Texas have unclaimed property. Examples of unclaimed property include dividend, payroll or cashier’s checks; stocks, bonds and mutual fund accounts; utility deposits and other refunds; insurance proceeds; mineral interest or royalty payments; dormant bank accounts; and abandoned safe deposit box contents. The Texas Comptroller’s office receives unclaimed property as required by law from financial institutions, businesses, and government entities that are holding personal property considered abandoned or unclaimed. The unclaimed or abandoned property is turned over to the Comptroller’s office when the property owners’ whereabouts are unknown and the property has been inactive on the books of the reporting company after the necessary abandonment period has expired. It is important to know that the Comptroller’s office acts only as a custodian of the unclaimed property, and holds the property in a trust until such time as it can be claimed. Texas does not take legal ownership of the unclaimed property, so there is no time limit for filing a claim. Over the past several years, the Texas Comptroller has travelled around the state to bring public attention to the billions in unclaimed property being held by the State of Texas. During the last fiscal year, the Texas Comptroller’s office received more than 300,000 claims and returned over $270 million in unclaimed property. Since the program began in 1962, the Comptroller’s office has returned over $2 billion worth of unclaimed property. The average individual claim that is paid out is around $1,000 and the single largest claim was made in 1996 at $4.3 million.

In order to make the process of claiming your property easier, the Comptroller’s office has outlined a number of recently added features on their website. The Comptroller’s database is regularly updated with new property that has been received by their office. To help guide you through the process, the Comptroller’s website features a simple step by step guide on how to claim your property as well as videos and other useful informational tools. To find out if you are one of these Texas residents with unclaimed property, I strongly recommend that you check the unclaimed property list by visiting Texas Unclaimed Property at https://www.comptroller.texas.gov/ programs/claim-it/faq.php or by calling 1-800654-FIND (3463). If you would like to follow the Texas House and learn more information on news, committees or other aspects of the legislative body, you can access its website at http://www.house. state.tx.us/. The site features live streaming from the House floor, committee hearings as well as access to a number of other resources. You can also follow the Texas Senate at http:// www.senate.state.tx.us/. The Texas Governor’s official website can be found at http://governor. state.tx.us/. If you have questions regarding any of the information mentioned in this week’s article, please do not hesitate to call my Capitol or District Office. Please always feel free to contact my office if you have any questions or issues regarding a Texas state agency, or if you would like to contact my office regarding constituent services. As always, my offices are available at any time to assist with questions, concerns or comments (Capitol Office, 512463-0672; District Office, 361-949-4603). - State Representative Todd Hunter, District 32 Rep. Hunter represents Nueces County (Part). He can be contacted at todd.hunter@house. texas.gov or at 512-463-0672.

Corpus Christi Police Officers were dispatched to the area of Suntan and Aloha in reference to a major vehicle crash. Officers arrived and located a 25 year-old male wet, wearing only jeans and wrapped in a blanket. The male stated that he drove to the area to throw away some garbage. He stated that when he got back in the vehicle that it began to roll and went into the water. He stated that a citizen helped pull him out of the vehicle. As officers were speaking with him they detected an odor of alcohol and he displayed signs of intoxication. Officers checked the area and discovered about 10 feet of skid marks as well as damage to the pier. It appears as if the vehicle attempted to brake, struck the curb and pier and wound up in the water. Officers were able to determine there was no one else in the vehicle. Officers arrested Oscar Castro (5-12-1991) for driving while intoxicated and transported him to the City Detention Center. The Corpus Christi Police Department dive team was sent to recover the vehicle.

Three Chords and the Truth

By Ronnie Narmour ronnienarmour@gmail.com

Happy birthday Gentry… MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYBODY. It’s been a fun holiday season so far. The company Christmas party for Kody’s, Giggity’s and Shorty’s is all kind of a blur. We ate a great feast at Kody’s and then hit every bar in town (almost) on Edwin’s dime. Thanks for your generosity Edwin and Amy

The brunch at Gigg’s is good but the music is spectacular. On Wednesday, January 4th, Mike will host his annual “Birthday Bash” with his storied Dixieland Jazz Band featuring Rocky Arnold plus a stage full of other local artists such as Rick Lehmann, Janet Lumley, BillAuverbach and Scott Herrington. That will be from 8-12 at Giggity’s. Did I mention that Mike is also an accomplished trombonist? This will be an outstanding show and one you shouldn’t miss if you are a fan of Dixieland and big band era material.

Scattered shots… I ran around town as usual last weekend but my camera crapped out on me on Friday, so I’m hurting for photos. I did get some on Saturday with Chris Garza and Red Giant at Shorty’s,

gets. Believe me, Tuesdays at Giggity’s is hot. So are Thursday since Winter Texans Colorado Bob Reed and Michigan John Boeckler have added to the Free Beer Band entourage at Gigg’s. I counted eight musicians on stage at one point last week. Heck, they couldn’t even work in my tried and true Jole Blon… too many real musicians on stage. It was wonderful. And it won’t be long until the PA Rockers take their Wednesday residency at Bernie’s. It’s like a 40th High School reunion every week. I love to watch the old coots dance. It’s better that TV. Winter is such a wonderful time down here and I welcome you Northerners with open arms.

DO NOT MISS LIST

Ken Yarbrough and Mike Jones are Unrehearsed and Unashame for NYE at the 361 Bar.

Toman Brothers…

a drink sometime and I’ll give you an ear full. The one about the show in Pleasanton is R rated and hilarious.

Coming soon…

We celebrated Gentry Powell’s 73rd birthday at Shorty’s on Tuesday Myers. It was a great evening and my head still hurts. As of this writing, there’s another big party tonight (Tuesday). It’s Gentry Powell’s birthday and my dearest friend, Susan Powell, is throwing him a big bash at Shorty’s with Davin James playing. I’m expecting nothing short of epic for this one. You remember Susan as the owner of the Back Porch, Ballyhoo’s, and Tortuga Flats. When I moved to Port A about ten years ago, Susan was the only person I knew on the island and I love her dearly. Gentry is a keeper too. Happy birthday my old friend. I will have my camera ready tonight.

The Toman Brothers will play Giggity’s on Friday. Chris Garza and Red Giant played Shorty’s on Saturday Todd Dorn and the Sea Drifters, the open mic Monday and Paul Taylor at Giggity’s. It was a big night of dancing with both Red Giant and Todd Dorn. My little “Honey Badger” buddy is

Mike Williams, Torch singer …

Todd Dorn and the Sea Drifters played Giggity’s last Saturday a pretty good dance partner. We tore it up pretty good at Shorty’s. Paul Taylor is another sleeper. I think the Winter Texans are really gonna give this show a shot in the arm. Paul plays old school R&B and jazz and his band is fabulous. He’s got Ray Summy on guitar and Eddie Olivarez on tenor sax, and it’s as soulful as it

Mike Williams plays every Sunday brunch (11-3) at Giggity’s I haven’t talked about Mike Williams in a while. Mike is truly and island treasure. He plays every Sunday brunch at Giggity’s and has for a good while. Mike is an amazing cat whose resume boasts attorney at law and college professor. But that aside, his finest attribute (in my humble opinion) is that of “torch singer”… and lately “Christmas caroler”. Mr. Williams has an encyclopedic knowledge of love songs from the 20’s on. He is a dying breed. When Mike goes, there just won’t be many left to fill his shoes. He can bust into a Frank Sinatra or Tony Bennett number with little or no effort.

The great Toman Brothers (San Antonio, TX) will grace the stage at Giggity’s this Friday. They are…well, incredible. They were Gary Stewart’s road band for many years and I used to run around the state with them when Gary was alive. If you don’t know who Gary Stewart is, we can never be friends. He was one wild child and wrote all those whiskey songs in the 70’s (Taken Me a Whiskey Trip, She’s Acting Single I’m Drinking Double, Drinking Thing… etc, etc. He charted over 30 times and was a real player in the country music scene. I’ve been buddies with the Tomans, Randy and Rusty, since the 80’s and have more than a few stories that I can’t tell here about Gary. Suffice it to say, he was nuts and a whole lot of fun. Buy me

Elsewhere, Billy Snipes is everywhere, the great John Boyd is at Treasure Island, Selfie is at Shorty’s and Roger Creager is at Brewster Street on the 23rd. On Christmas morning I will be singing Little Drummer Boy in church with Carol Elliiott who will be accompanying on dulcimer. That’s at Trinity By the Sea on Trojan Street at 10 AM. The following week, Kyle Park will play Brewster Street with Kimberly Dunn on the 29th, blues rocker Ulrich Ellison will play Giggity’s on the 30th and Aaron Watson will Brewster. Also on the 30th, Jim Dugan will play the Gaffe and Somethin’ Silky will play Treasure Island. One New Years Eve Joe King Carrasco will set your hair on fire at Giggity’s and Ken Yarbrough and Mike Jones will bring their hilarious Unrehearsed and Unashamed show to the 361 Bar. That ought to hold you for a while. HAPPY HOLIDAYS and be safe out there.
