From Failure to Promise Scholar —Spotlight 2011—1st Place Recipient: Elysia Jennett (in her own words) “I have been in my job at South Mountain Community College as a Grant Coordinator for a year now and I love it. I get to help support science teachers and their students by providing lab supplies, lab assistance, dual enrollment credit, scholarships and internships! Despite all of the illness and injury I have continued in my job and every day I feel like I am making an impact on science education. They hired me because I was almost done with my Master's and they are very supportive of me completing it. I plan to stay with SMCC until the grant ends in another year and a half, then either return to teaching science or continue on in a similar position providing support to teachers. Good news on the research and Master's front as well- despite everything that was going on, there has still been a lot of progress and I am almost done! Last April I received samples from three additional, unexpected sites. That was very good for my data set but also meant more lab work and more time. I was well enough in the late summer to visit the lab regularly and finish the last of the lab work. We ran a preliminary analysis of the data set and got a first glimpse of the results, so that was very exciting! Now we are running the final data analysis, making the final figures, etc. I just finished two of the final permit reports and am about to finish the final report for the National Geographic Waitt Society Grant that paid for the supplies. The reason I am about to read your book again is that there has definitely been some emotional ups and downs and some spiritual ups and downs. So when I was in the hospital I was thinking - what could lift me up and encourage me? And I thought of your book! Like I said, I was already planning on emailing you because I thought it would bring a smile to your face to know that I thought of it in another dark time in my life.”
