As a result we have been contacted by readers commenting on the fact that in the last year or so there have been at least FOUR that have appeared and then disappeared….some faster than the ink used to print them has had time to dry!

Something seems to suggest to these newbies that it is an easy way to make money. They set about the task with one objective in mind… to make as much money as they can from advertisers in as short a time as possible.

They promise the earth, take cash in advance, and fade away as soon as the cheques have cleared the bank.

It happens time and time again, and yet there are still advertisers out there that fall for it, like serial victims keen to inflict as much harm as possible on themselves!

Another launched in October. The usual suspects are advertising, but this time it is serious as one of them paid almost £400 to advertise an open day….. …..on a date that had come and gone BEFORE the „publication‟ was even distributed….. which was apparently almost 4 weeks later than promised!

Oh well, a sucker is born every day.

This sort of thing reflects badly on the entire industry.

We are a part of that industry and object to being tarnished with the fall-out that inevitably follows.

Proof our robust good health will become even more apparent with our January edition, which expands to include Burnham-on-Sea. We mentioned it to a few Burnham businesses and within hours they had booked more than two full pages! We will be adding extra pages to accommodate all the Burnham-on-Sea local interest information, plus a healthy crop of eager advertisers.

Current advertisers will find themselves with 1000‟s of potential new customers in Burnham. Burnham-on-Sea businesses can reach out to the widespread distribution area that Home & Local has always offered.

A situation where everyone wins.

Gardening Notes for December

by Angela Bromwich Hyacinths being grown for Christmas should be brought out into warmth and light now as they will take about 3 weeks to come into flower. This year promises to be a good one for holly. In some areas flocks of birds, especially starlings, will strip a tree of its berries in a single afternoon. To make sure of keeping some for decoration, cut a few boughs now and hang them up in a cold shed, away from mice, where they will keep fresh for several weeks.

Aquadulce broad beans should be sown now, if not already done. Plant shallots, which are traditionally planted on the shortest day and harvested on the longest. If your Brussels sprout plants have grown tall it would be wise to stake them to prevent wind rock. Loose roots will tend to make the sprouts „blow‟, which although perfectly edible is not nearly as nice as firm compact sprouts.

Continue to plant bare root fruit trees, bushes and canes, also ornamental trees, shrubs and roses, when weather permits. Prepare the ground well with some well rotted manure or compost in the planting hole and a handful of bone meal. Trees should have a metre diameter around them kept clear of grass for the first 3 years at least. You can do this with a circle of carpet or other suitable material put round them, or keep it clear with a weed killer such as Roundup. It is surprising that competition from grass and weeds can slow down the establishment of trees to such an extent. Try to get rough digging finished before Christmas to leave plenty of time for the weather to break it down ready for spring cultivation. If you are a „no dig‟ gardener make sure to get compost or manure spread early for weather and worms to do their job.

Don‟t be in too much of a hurry to tidy up ivy as the berries are a valuable food source for the thrush family, especially blackbirds, at this time of year. Wisteria, birches, acers and vines should be pruned by the end of the month as they bleed badly if left until the sap is rising.

Check the fruit store regularly and take out any rotted fruit before the disease spreads to the rest. Mice invariably come into sheds in winter and will munch through fruit very quickly, if unchecked, just leaving the skin shell, so if there are no cats around put mouse traps down.

Last but not least, insulate outdoor taps before hard frosts set in.

GLASTONBURY & WELLS CATS PROTECTION www.stray-cat.co.uk These two well mannered gentlemen would love to have new homes and warm hearths for Christmas.

Dudley is a gentle, long-haired black & white fellow. He is 10 years old and a happy, healthy lap cat.

He came into the care of Cats Protection with Smudge who is also 10 years old. The pair are the innocent victims of a relationship break down. Smudge is likely to be a bit shy of new people but will quickly gain confidence and then he too will be a friendly lap cat. Smudge is short-haired and is white with most attractive, unusual markings in brown, grey and black. He too has been pronounced fit and healthy by the vet.

Dudley and Smudge do NOT need to be homed together, indeed we feel they would be happier in separate homes but could stay together in a home where they could each have their own space.

These cats could well have many years of love and friendship to give so please contact me if you are looking for a deserving feline friend to share your home. Neither of the cats seem particularly keen on dogs and we think that they would also be happier in a fairly quiet home without young children.
