Ahh, That’s Relaxing An organization calling itself Salve Sag Harbor published an open letter to village officials this week advocating what it calls “aggressive efforts to calm traffic at problem intersections in Sag Harbor.” Among the group’s proposals: large billboards along every roadway with attractive, soothing pictures of sleeping kittens; speaker systems set up at problem spots playing relaxing, New Age music combined with ambient sounds recorded in South American rainforests; drone aircraft to patrol intersections, armed with tranquilizer guns to shoot and subdue errant motorists. The most ambitious proposal is the establishment of a full-service rest area in Mashashimuet Park, where motorists can stop to calm down and, for a small fee, receive a foot massage. Officials were upbeat about the proposals but say further study is required. McGumbus Goat Ranch Standoff Agents of the federal government descended on Shelter Island last week, as tax day approached, to seize the approximately 350 goats belonging to Old Man McGumbus, the 104-year-old WWII vet and CEO of Shelter Island Variety Jerkies LLC. The government allows goat ranching across Shelter Island, but since 1993 has required goat ranchers to pay a fee for the privilege. McGumbus has claimed that, under obscure trusts, covenants and “verbal agreements,” certain areas of Shelter Island in fact belong to him and should be exempt. These matters came to a head when the IRS dispatched its Marine Caprine Machine, popularly known as the “Goat on a Boat,” to Coecles Harbor and began herding McGumbus’s goats onto the craft. McGumbus and what police later described as “a surly gang of goat herders” appeared and began angrily and violently protesting the government’s actions. They took up the whole car. Christopher Walken, not smiling as always, sat behind the motorman’s booth in the front car going from Westhampton Beach to Quiogue last Friday. Terrie Sultan, Executive Director of the Parrish Art Museum in Water Mill, was seen struggling with a giant painting, trying to wedge it through the door of a car at the Southampton station. She succeeded and was off in the direction of Hampton Bays. Nick Monte of Gurney’s Inn was seen on the subway headed from Napeague to Amagansett last Thursday. SUBWAY PROTESTS About 100 protesters carrying signs saying the Hamptons Subway should be closed up
and filled in walked back and forth in front of the stairs leading down to the East Hampton platform on Wednesday afternoon. The group holding the protest, The Good Earth, was led by Annie Fly, the head of that organization, which declares that anything dug into the ground causes great disturbance to the creatures living below. They have expressed surprise, fear and sadness over the loss of their hunting grounds. “Ants and bugs and worms are people too,” she told the crowd just before the police broke it all up and arrested everybody. “Imagine having a boring machine come tearing down YOUR house one day.” She was particularly incensed, as were others in the group, at the subway’s plans to build a spur from Hampton Bays to Flanders. “Enuf is Enuf,” one sign read. HAPPY BIRTHDAY CARL Carl Overstretch, second in command of the Hamptons Security Department, turns 54 on Friday, and everyone is welcome to celebrate with him at the company cafeteria in Hampton Bays at 3 p.m. Overstretch makes use of a tax loophole he found that results in the

WALKING THE TRACKS The public is invited to “Walk the Tracks” next Tuesday night at 2 a.m. after the system shuts down for what is usually the all-night maintenance that happens every night. But there’s no maintenance on this night, just as there was none last Tuesday night. This Tuesday is the birthday of our illustrious founder, who built Hamptons Subway underground in 1931 and left it for us to find and open in 2008. It’s a long story. Last Tuesday there also was no maintenance because that was the birthday of Ivan Kratz’s wife Gladys. At that time, all the employees of Hamptons Subway “walked the tracks,” looking for trash and treasures and, for the most part, took away lots of treasures— wedding rings, gloves, fancy eyeglasses and the like. So here it is the following week and the general public gets the dregs. But you never know. In any case, we expect the tracks to be spotless when we open on Wednesday morning. COMMISSIONER ASPINALL’S REPORT As you may have heard last week, the Subway Restaurant chain is considering pulling out of Hamptons Subway beginning on May 31 when their contract to sell food at their kiosks to the crowds of people who come across the platforms ends. That they won’t say they are leaving or staying is a problem because people have gotten so used to stopping at Subway for a snack and sandwich or whatever, there could be a big problem if they go. We’ve been talking to 7-Eleven, meanwhile.

Christopher Walken and Oliver Platt were filming scenes for When I Live My Life Over Again at the Suffolk Theater in Riverhead last Thursday. The beautiful Art Deco theater is quickly becoming a magnet for film crews, but next Friday, May 2 it’s folk rock legend Ani DiFranco who’ll take the stage. (See story on page 32.) North Haven’s Richard Gere has been filming Time Out of Mind in New York City. In the new film, Gere plays a homeless man attempting to reunite with his daughter. It’s not just any NYU senior thesis that was being shot at The Basilica Parish of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary in Southampton Friday morning—it’s Something About Wonder, YiYi Han’s latest film. Han is well known to Cannes Film Festival audiences for her work. Her latest short stars East Hampton’s own Rebecca Kiembock, a former Dan’s Papers intern. It’s a “very dark comedy,” according to Han. “It’s about a hopeless romantic who decides to murder her best friend’s bride on her wedding day, but her car breaks down on the beach, where she meets a hearse driver.” Other shots featured Tiana Beach and Dune Road. Tree House A Story About Lawyers and Neighbors and Children in Sag Harbor By Dan Rattiner
T
he Village of Sag Harbor thrived as a whaling port for about 170 years ago, and at that time much of the downtown was built with narrow and crooked streets and small houses on close-together lots, sometimes with buildings of one kind or another right on a neighbor’s property line. This makes for an undeniably adorable little village, but it can also result in some very unusual neighborly encounters. One such encounter, still ongoing, was told to me by my daughter, who lives in one of those houses with her husband, Kevin, her daughter, age 12, and her son, Rhone, who is 10. There is a one-car garage on the property attached to the main house, the far wall of which sits less than an inch from her property line. The main house is a two-story affair. The garage is one story with a flat roof. About two years ago, my daughter began talking with the neighbor to the south about building a tree house in the big maple tree on the neighbor’s property that overhangs my daughter’s garage. The neighbors were very agreeable to this. They had a 13-year-old son at the time and thought he might like it, too. However, time passed and the project never
happened. Then the neighbors lost their jobs and put their house on the market. “When are we gonna build the tree house?” my grandson wanted to know. New neighbors moved in, a pair of lawyers with offices in Riverhead, and of course my daughter and her husband went over to welcome them to the community. In the course of things, they brought up the idea of the tree house. The couple has no children, but they saw no problem with this. Two days later, my daughter received a six-page legal document in the mail from the neighbors. “I had no idea what this would be,” she told me. “Turned out to be a document they wanted signed by us and by whoever was going to build the tree house, affirming that there was insurance for the construction and that if anything happened on their property we would hold them harmless and take all responsibility.” My daughter has a handyman she uses for various projects, and he had told her he would build the tree house when the time came. And so she asked him if he had insurance, and he said he didn’t. But he said he’d be happy to sign anything. And she called me. ‘This is very badly written, for a lawyer,’ she said. ‘Also, what’s in it for you?’ “I said we get a tree house, but she said, other than that. ‘This says that for now and in perpetuity if any of your kids or future kids step on their property and get harmed or injured there, then you will hold them harmless for that.’ “So I asked her, This says that if they bang their heads and go unconscious in their living room, they could just let them lay there? They wouldn’t even have to call you or an ambulance or even a doctor? Not their problem?” “‘For liability, yes,’ she told me. ‘Though there are other laws to be considered, of course.’ “I couldn’t believe it. I tried other examples. This would be like the mailman or a refrigerator repair man were injured in their house, they wouldn’t be responsible? I asked. “‘The refrigerator man,’ she said, ‘but not the mailman. The mailman doesn’t cross the threshold.’ “Oh.” “So Hildy said she’d mirror this. ‘If they go on your property, they hold you harmless forever.’” “Okay.” “So we sent it back with that and asked them to review the changes we made, and it was during this time that Wilbur, the handyman, said he would have time to build the tree house
in about two weeks, but then he had a job that would last six months after that and couldn’t do it. I called the neighbors to try to settle this quickly. I left a message. But got no reply. “And so then I got this idea that maybe we could build a tree house not in the tree, but on a wooden platform, right on the garage. The branches of the tree were overhead. But we wouldn’t have to touch them. Wouldn’t even have to involve the neighbor. But then I learned I was wrong about that. The handyman would have to be on the neighbors’ property for 15 minutes.” Here was the problem. The tree house would sit on a platform on the roof. But to keep it steady, several 2’ x 4’s, attached to the side of the tree house, would drop down vertically and overhang the outside of the garage, so they could be screwed into the outside of the garage wall. He’d need permission for 15 minutes on the neighbor’s property to screw them in. “I called them and explained this. They said they’d get back to me, but they didn’t. So then the tree house got built, and the handyman said he’d figured out a way to do it without going on the neighbors’ property. He tied the ladder to the roof of the tree house, dropped it down five feet—it wouldn’t touch the ground—and then climbed down it. And while hovering over their property, on their air rights, so to speak, he had screwed in the brace. Then he had climbed back up and pulled up the ladder behind him. “So now it would not be necessary to get
permission,” my daughter said. “So I thought to call them to tell them never mind, and in the course of that call I spilled the beans. We had hovered. We’d used their air rights. Nothing had gone wrong, however. It was done.” “What did they say?” “What could they say? I did tell them they would be welcome to come by and go up in our rooftop little tree house if they wanted. Anytime.” “Two lawyers?” “Yes. Dad, do you think the Village would mind I built the tree house up there? You really can’t see it from the road, sort of. The tree is in the way.” “Can you stand up in it?” “No. But you can crawl in and sit on pillows in it.” “How do you get up to it?” “You crawl out the window from Joel’s room. Or you climb up the ladder from the back of the garage, near where the ducks and chickens live.” My daughter has three ducks and one chicken the kids feed. There are also two dogs, a parrot and a cat. There’s a lotta life in that little house. “Can it be removed from the roof?” “Oh sure. You don’t put nails or screws through a roof. It’s just attached at the sides, as I said. So you would just unscrew it and take it off.” “It’s furniture,” I said. “No problem.” “Okay,” she said. “Thanks, dad.” “And tell your new neighbors I said hello.”

Getting Ready Amagansett, East Hampton & Southampton Brace for the Arrival of Summer
H
ere are some recent news items about our community. Everybody is in hurry-up mode because summer is approaching and we need to get these things done now or never, because we were all too depressed during the cold winter to do much. ALCOHOL IN AMAGANSETT There has been a big problem at the ocean beaches in Amagansett. People from afar come down there, pay the parking fee and party and drink all day. Beer has been part of the local scene for years down there, but this is something else. It’s loud and out-of-hand. So the town has proposed a ban on alcoholic beverages during the day when lifeguards are down on Indian Wells and Atlantic Avenue, the two beaches in Amagansett. Well, not quite. At a meeting of the East Hampton Trustees at the end of March, it turned out that trustees, a separate government body
in town that also regulates the beaches, had not felt themselves convinced this was the right way to go. “[The problem is] the intoxication,’ one of the trustees said, “not the alcohol itself.” There might be other ways of looking at this. (A resolution to hold a public hearing on the proposal was tabled at a Town Board meeting the week before.) In any case, the Town is considering passing this law, but maybe not having it in place for long. It might be withdrawn after a year or two. And there is some logic to this. In Westhampton Beach 25 years ago, motorcycle gangs discovered that town and took to roaring up and down Main Street on Saturdays and Sundays in the summertime. It went on for years like this. But they stopped it. How? One year, they decided to buy huge baskets of flowers and, starting on Memorial Day and all summer long, hang them from the lampposts. Sure enough, the bikers came in, saw all the flowers festooning downtown, said “we’re outta

here,” and never came back. It worked. So it might be possible that in 2015 or 2016, when the loud and obnoxious drunks go elsewhere, we can bring alcohol back onto the beaches, ready to enjoy local beach bonfires. By they way, ever see a nighttime beach bonfire built in a giant metal container? It’s the law that they be built in containers. But I’ve never seen one either. BIGGER BEACH FOR QUOGUE The residents of the Village of Quogue are proposing to have 1.1 million cubic yards of sand dredged up from the ocean floor and relocated along 2.7 miles of oceanfront beaches in that town. According to a study, the width of the beach is about 75’ less than it was in 1950. It is not nearly as much fun as it once was. And the shallower width puts the oceanfront homes in danger. Borrowing what they call “loaned” sand will solve the problem. A company has offered to do it for (Cont’d on next page) $14 million.

Who will pay for it? If the Village of Quogue does, or if a tax district along the ocean in that village does, I’m all for it. This project is modeled on a similar one, approved and carried out this past winter between Flying Point Road in Southampton and Townline Road in Sagaponack. Over this 6-mile stretch, about $25 million in sand was relocated to the beach from the bottom of the ocean 100 yards or so offshore, with the cost paid for by a special tax district in the town consisting of almost exclusively oceanfront taxpayers. These taxpayers will be paying more every year for the next 10 years or so. This makes perfect sense. The oceanfront people enjoy the ocean beaches every day; the inland people enjoy the ocean beaches only
Sag Harbor Village, of course, is the poster child of keeping chain stores out. How they do it, I don’t know. But they must have laws... once in a while. Also, the value of the property along the ocean is very high, so those owning those properties can afford it. Though I am for it, I’m sure there will be a Save the Mollusk group formed to oppose the project, in order to protect the poor mollusks that might get sucked up from the ocean floor and relocated along the beach without their having a personal say in this. This is America,

where everyone is entitled to a voice. The more sand we can armor the south shore with, the better, in my opinion. NO 7-ELEVEN East Hampton is rushing rapidly along to pass laws that would prohibit chain stores from coming into town within a mile of historic districts or within half a mile of historic places. The cause for the alarm seems to be a proposal (the permit was quickly rescinded) to place a 7-Eleven in Amagansett, adjacent to the Amagansett IGA by the post office. Amagansett is still a small town with lots of little local shops. To inflict upon it a chain store, or a group of chain stores, bringing the name and goods of similar stores that are found in villages and towns around the country is, they think, a kind of homogenization and tragic loss of identity for what goes on here. They are right about this, of course. For many years, the town thought there WAS such a law on the books. They often chased away chain-store applicants by waving pieces of paper at them. But then a search of the town code revealed there never had been such laws. Sag Harbor Village, of course, is the poster child of keeping chain stores out. How they do it, I don’t know. But they must have laws, or at least armed picketers and demonstrators at the ready to leap out and protest when one threatens, as a CVS did seven years ago near Long Wharf. It ran off. Many towns and villages around the country don’t allow chain stores. I recall 10 years ago in San Francisco when a drug chain wanted to open a store in North Beach and came faceto-face with an enormous billboard reading WRONG-AID. They departed. Other historic towns that so far are chainstore-free here are Westhampton Beach and Bridgehampton. They have such stores in shopping centers, but not the historic districts. A place that long ago succumbed to highend chain stores is downtown East Hampton. The town is lucky to have some of them— Restoration Hardware, Ralph Lauren, Donna Karan, Elie Tahari, etc. do have their place in the world, or several places in the world. But if you need to buy a pair of cheap Hanes socks or Fruit of the Loom underpants, it’s off with you to the nearest shopping center, six miles away. Years ago, it was all mom-and-pop stores in East Hampton, and when hard times came, such as the Recession of 2008, the stores stayed open and the owners weathered through, encouraged to do so by their loyal clientele. These days, however, in hard times, the chain stores just shut up tight. Half the town was shut down in the winter of 2009 and 2010. The village was considering putting the work of local artists in the storefront windows so things would not look so bad. Now everybody is back, or almost everybody, but we remember that winter well, the spookiness of it and that we were on our own. There’s an upside and downside with having chain stores. And surely one of the downsides is figuring out what town you are in amid a mass of McDonald’s. On the upside, you can get a cheeseburger Happy Meal with fries. Or without. Hooray for the East Hampton Town Board, or whoever.

A Summer of Books, Readings, Prizes, Awards and Lectures By dan Rattiner
B
ooks, writing and reading are alive and well on the East End. In recent years, a number of different events to celebrate books and writing have sprung up in the Hamptons, notably two in East Hampton and two in Southampton, and they have come to involve thousands of people. Throughout the winter and spring, a literary salon has been held on a select Saturday each month at the Southampton Inn on Hill Street. Hors d’oeuvres are served, and the efforts of three or four essayists are showcased as they read their works to an audience seated in the Inn’s beautiful living room. These essayists are selected by the staff of Dan’s Papers, and the
event honors the annual Dan’s Papers $6,000 Literary Prize for Nonfiction competition, which begins every March and continues on until an awards ceremony in August (more about which later). The final literary salon until next fall takes place on April 25 at 5 p.m. The next literary event of the season is the Southampton College Writers Conference, which convenes over a 12-day period from July 9 to 20 at the Stony Brook Southampton campus. Between those two dates, workshops are held in poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction at a variety of venues on that campus. Those attending the conference are a mix of undergraduates from the main campus, students from afar, summer and local residents

of the Hamptons, and MFA program students hoping to sharpen their skills. There are classes, readings, assignments, one-on-ones, lectures and cocktail parties during that time. Several of the events, mostly lectures and readings by different authors, are open to the general public. The full 12-day conference may be taken for three credits or as workshops (prices range from $703 to $2,326; housing is available for the summer program at an additional cost). It’s possible to take a shortened version of the Conference—a five-day “Intensive” program is held from July 9 to 13—and there is also a Children’s Literature Intensive five-day program that runs from July 16 to 20. Five-day programs are available for two credits or as workshops (costs range from $738 to $1,495). Much of the faculty for this summer conference comes from the university’s MFA in Writing program. The faculty for this year’s program includes poet Billy Collins (poet laureate for the United States from 2001–2003), author Roger Rosenblatt, Meg Wollitzer, Libba Bray, Patricia Marx, Peter Lerangis, Frederic Tuten and many more. This summer writer’s conference is considered one of the best of its kind in the country.
And there are guest artists. Among those in 2013 were Laurie Anderson, Star Black, Annette Handley Chandler, Bill Collage, Neal Gabler, Robert Emmett Ginna, Elena Gorokhova, Suzanne Gluck, Emma Walton Hamilton, Amy Hobby, Bob Holman, Peggy Kern, Zachary Lazar, Jim Lehrer, Patricia Marx, D.T. Max, Joe Pintauro, Roy Raj, James Salter, Reneé Shafransky, Terrie Sultan and many others. The next event of the season for those interested in writing, authors and books is the annual Author’s Night for the East Hampton Library in East Hampton, on Saturday, August 9, from 5 to 7 p.m. Author’s Night, hosted by the East Hampton Library, is a benefit for that institution that every year raises hundreds of thousands of dollars. A large tent is set up in a field (this year the location has not yet been announced), and authors are invited to bring copies of their

This Week’s Cover Artist: Joe Chierchio By MARION WOLBERG-WEISS
This week’s cover image by Joe Chierchio is as a homage to the iconic painting Christina’s World by Andrew Wyeth. Yet Chierchio’s version is distinctly East End, as the female figure in the foreground longs for the Parrish Art Museum. Why did you select the Parrish for a painting? I wanted to do a painting of the Parrish because it plays such an important role in
the art community here. But I wanted to make the painting my own, to give it a narration and to put in a person. When I was in the advertising business, they used to call me “Mr. Humanity.” I didn’t just do pretty pictures. I put in the human element. So, I didn’t just want to paint the Parrish. I wanted people—the viewer—to relate to people—or person—in the piece. The cover image represents some of your signature qualities, like storytelling and conveying people’s emotions. What were the
more human aspects you were attracted to in Wyeth’s painting? I felt a real connection to the girl, Christina, in the painting. She was a neighbor of Wyeth’s in Cushing, Maine, and they became friends. But Christina had polio and didn’t like to use the wheelchair, so she crawled every place. She was crawling toward her home in the painting when Wyeth saw her from his house. He admired her determination, I think. So do I. This may sound melodramatic, but I wanted to communicate in my work that Christina was yearning to get to the Parrish. What is it about the Parrish and the Hamptons that convey the feeling that Christina had about getting home? You’ve had a home here for 20 years, though you live in New York. My fiancée, Suzanne, and I come out to Water Mill every weekend. It’s a beautiful place to paint and draw. There are lots of galleries to show work. I like the sense of nostalgia, particularly the old potato farms, although that culture is dying when the farmers sell to real estate developers who build big mansions. What has your love of the land led to? We have donated some of our land to Amaryllis Farm, a place where rescue horses are kept. Suzanne loves horses. She is a sculptor and uses horses as subjects.

Nostalgia as a theme is one of your artistic signatures. For example, some of your paintings feature Brooklyn—where you grew up—in the good old days: the Brooklyn Navy Yard, the brownstones, the ferries. What’s your latest work dealing with nostalgia? Classic cars of the 1930s and ’40s. Sexy cars with sexy girls. These classic cars are moving works of art.

Speaking of transportation and nostalgia, how do you feel about New York City Mayor Bill DeBlasio wanting to do away with the horse-drawn carriages, which have been the subject of your works? It’s like doing away with the heart and soul of New York. I understand you’ll be away from New York for several weeks. Yes. We are going to Spain, staying in a villa in Marbella, owned by Suzanne’s son. We’ll do our art work and maybe I’ll have a show. We’ve also been to Forte de Marmi (Fort of the Marble) in Italy, where Suzanne uses the same kind of marble that was used to create David. Those beautiful places stand in stark contrast to suffering in other parts of the world. There’s lots of unhappiness in the world. Maybe that’s why I put myself in the past, recalling the 1930s and ’40s in my art.

Recently, like many people, I couldn’t stand paying more and more for TV. So, for $8 a month I switched to Roku, a device that give you access to hundreds of TV channels, you can select and really customize your TV. Many channels are local. For example, there’s a channel for the Florida Keys, Myrtle Beach, Colorado Springs, and so on...I enjoy them, especially because they are homegrown, wonderfully funny, and blissfully candid about what’s going on in their towns. It really made me think, what if the Island had its own channel... “Good Morning Shelter Island!!!!! It’s 6 a.m., a balmy 45 degrees. Martin Manic with your Morning Panic here! On the one, the only, the secluded and deluded Shelter Island. Six a.m. and here we are at the South Ferry, seven cars in line. Let’s find out where everyone is going today. Camera guy and me running up to car number one now, a stern-faced gentleman. Good morning, sir, will you roll down your window and tell us where you’re going this morning?”

What’s the word at Wades Beach?” “Thanks Martin Panic the Morning Manic, I mean Martin Manic and, whatever. Well, just us here right now. It’s a balmy 44 degrees, but that doesn’t stop the action this morning! The tide appears to be coming in and there doesn’t seem to be any way to stop it. Jerry, can we get a sample of the sandwich and get it analyzed and hey, don’t put that in your mouth! Well, folks as you can see, Jerry has verified it is an old tuna that is the cause of this crab altercation. Wait! The tide is bringing in something in....Jerry, can you get that? What? Boxer shorts? Well, folks, you never know what that tide will bring in, that’s why we cover this beach for the town. What size, Jerry? Size 42? All right, Islanders, as you can see, we have a nice pair of blue plaid size 42 boxer shorts. You can claim them by calling the station, but after 4 p.m. Jerry will be applying the Finders Keepers claim for himself. Now, let’s check in with Bill McGill at the North Ferry.

Police: Arsonist Set Beach Home on Fire
New Mattituck Farmers Market to Open May 9
BRIDGEHAMPTON: Following a fire in Bridgehampton on Saturday that damaged an oceanfront residence, Southampton Town police have arrested a Sagaponack man they say started the blaze plus a brush fire in the Hayground area on an earlier date. David Osiecki, 54, was arrested around 2:30 p.m. Saturday and charged with thirddegree arson, a felony, and fifthdegree arson, a misdemeanor. Bridgehampton Fire Department was first to respond to the house fire Saturday, at 5:53 a.m. Multiple area fire departments were subsequently brought in. Southampton Town and Suffolk County fire marshals investigated the cause of the fire, and the Suffolk County Arson Squad and Southampton Town Police Department detectives also responded.
MATTITUCK: It just got easier for locals and visitors to enjoy the bounty of the North Fork, all in one place—Mattituck is getting a Farmers Market. Opening in the Mattituck Florist on Love Lane, the market will begin operating on May 9 and run on Fridays from 3–6 p.m. until October 31. The market, which was greenlighted by Southold Town last week, will open with 11 vendors. “For the most part, it will be small businesses that don’t have storefronts, and farmers,” says Maryann Krupski, one of the market’s founding members. The market is a pilot program, and Southold Town could close it at any time, so Krupski emphasizes that community support, from both locals and visitors, is vital to the market’s sustainability. The market will also be a forum for community service. Students will be invited to volunteer to help manage it, ultimately learning how to run a business. The idea for the Farmers Market was brought about by Maryann and Gene Krupski of Mattituck’s organic Mar-Gene Farms; Donna Burden of Donna’s Tradery and Danielle LaScala, the owner of Mattituck Florist. The group has been working to get the market up and running since last November. Krupski recognizes the importance of having a farmers market in Mattituck, the first under the jurisdiction of Southold Town. She hopes that it will add to the vitality of the community, providing job opportunities. “Hopefully, the market will make the kids stay in our community,” says Krupski.
Hampton Classic Announces 2014 Poster Artist BRIDGEHAMPTON: Julie Freund has been selected as the Hampton Classic 2014 poster artist. Freund’s poster is titled “Paseo,” a word describing the formal entrance march of bullfighters into an arena or a leisurely stroll. “...I like to take the everyday images that equestrians see and create a work of art that is recognizable and yet done in a way that emphasizes the beauty of the sport, and of the animal,” Freund said. “Paseo” references an original photograph by the artist’s friend. Freund graduated with a B.F.A in Painting and a double minor in Equestrian Studies and Art History from Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). She currently lives in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, where she rides and trains sport horses, and works as a freelance artist.

F
rom an angry teenager with a voice that couldn’t be silenced, Ani DiFranco has grown into a wise mother who knows, as ever, how to speak up for what she believes. All along the journey, through the many incantations of womanhood she came to embody, DiFranco’s voice has been true and strong. “Whatever truth that weaves through all those songs,” DiFranco says, “that’s the essence of who I am and what I care about…I don’t have to try to be consistent. I try to be just as transparent and honest and in the moment as I can.” On Puddle Dive, one of her earliest records, the song “Willing to Fight” pushed people to think outside their realm of comfort. “I know the biggest crime,” she sings, “is just to throw up your hands. Say ‘this has nothing to do with me. I just wanna live as comfortably as I can. You gotta look outside your eyes, you gotta think outside your brain. You gotta walk outside your life to where the neighborhood changes.’” Perhaps it’s the understanding that no matter what life brings her, she still has a responsibility to speak up for what she believes is right. As much success as she’s had in her life, she has not stopped seeing the shortcomings in society. DiFranco never hesitates to give credit where credit is due, and she points to luminaries like Woodie Guthrie and Pete Seeger as leaders on this path that combines the political with the musical. “Woodie used music to unite and inform people,” DiFranco says. “That was huge for me. New Works Festival Offers Free Staged Readings
O
ver the course of three consecutive nights starting April 25, Sag Harbor’s Bay Street Theatre is hosting staged readings of new works in development by up-and-coming New York playwrights for an inaugural event appropriately named the New Works Festival. In addition to providing East End theatergoers with the opportunity to be the first to view these plays-in-progress, Bay Street also aims to foster art with great potential. Following each free staged reading the audience may stay for a talkback with the writer. The weekend also includes an Artist Interact—a panel discussion with all three writers led by multi-Emmy-winner John Weidman. Bay Street Artistic Director Scott Schwartz explains that the staged readings are more than a table read, but there’s no set, no blocking and no costumes. The actors don’t memorize their lines and they will have the scripts in their hands. “It asks the audience to be an imaginative partner in the event,” he says of staged readings. “So each audience member can picture their own production as they’re experiencing it.” The festival is produced in conjunction with Space on Ryder Farm, an upstate writers’ residency program, which Schwartz himself attended before joining the theater last fall. Through the relationship with Space, the New Works Festival will have a second leg in New York City. On April 30 at 7 p.m., one of the three plays, Fight Call by Jess Brickman, will be presented for free again, this time at the Ars Nova loft on West 54th Street. Schwartz says he reached out to Space on Ryder Farm Executive Director Emily Simoness to partner on the festival because he knows she is plugged into emerging playwrights. “We went out to writers we admired, directors we admired,” Schwartz says. “I talked to a number of agents and looked at a lot of scripts and settled on the three we have.” In addition to Fight Call, they chose The Orchard Play by P. Seth Bauer and The May Queen by Molly Smith Metzler. “We wanted a diverse set of plays,” Simoness says, adding that each play is different tonally. Schwartz says, “All three writers are people with strong points of view who present really dynamic and individual work.” He calls Fight Call a “delightful, delicious and, frankly, mean theatrical comedy. The play concerns mentorship and friendship, and how work seeps into the rest of life. “It’s about an older actor and a young understudy who gets promoted to a lead role in Arthur Miller’s My Three Sons,” Schwartz explains. They test the boundaries of trust when one threatens to commit an act of real violence on stage. Brickman will have the opportunity to do re-writes of Fight Call before the second reading in New York, based on the feedback she gets at Bay Street. Bauer’s The Orchard Play is a modern interpretation of Russian author Anton Chekhov’s 1904 The Cherry Orchard. Schwartz says that while this beautiful play is inspired by a great classic, it deals with the contemporary issue of fracking. Ending the festival will be The May Queen. It is about how relationships can become new, and how they can also curdle and become difficult, Schwartz says. “I would call that play a dramedy—it’s quite funny,” he adds. “It gets to the core of relating to people we knew when we were younger.”

The Other Woman In the comedy The Other Woman, Cameron Diaz plays Carly Whitten, who thinks she’s found the man for her in the sexy, wealthy Mark King (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau). But Mark, as it turns out, is already married to Kate, played by Leslie Mann. As unlikely as it seems, Carly and Kate become
friends over way too many tequila shots, and soon they’re plotting revenge on Mark—who, as it turns out, has at least one more woman up his sleeve, the young and air-headed Amber (Kate Upton), who becomes a co-conspirator in their plans. What follows is fairly standard chick-flick fare, with a certain amount of guaranteed jokes about inflicting punishment on male genitalia. Some scenes are set in the Hamptons. The Quiet Ones Not for the squeamish, The Quiet Ones is a scare flick of the grainy footage/sudden shock variety. Set at a British university in 1974, and supposedly based on real events, the film features a variation of the exorcism plot: a pretty, innocent young girl is possessed by some kind of demon, but instead of bringing in a priest, a college professor wants to effect a scientific cure. He enlists his students as assistants, and all is documented with the blokey 16mm film cameras of the era. Should work well for a spooky thrill ride. Locke Locke is a film with a fairly conventional story arc—a man named Ivan Locke undergoes a transformation brought about by life-changing events. But the film, written and directed by Steven Knight, tells its story using an experimental technique. The entire film takes place as the title character drives down the highway at night, and all of the dramatic events take place via conversations that Locke has on his cell phone (hands free, of course) while driving, and imaginary conversations that Locke has with his deceased father. Hitchcock, of course, experimented with such extreme limitations of film space, such as in Lifeboat where all of the action takes place in a lifeboat, and in Rope where all of the action takes place in one living room. But Hitchcock always had more than one face to focus on, Locke, which opened in England last year, has received generally positive reviews.

pooling sweat from their chins and pushing through 300 squats, several members at CrossFit Hamptons worked toward their goal of completing “Murph.” “Murph,” is one of CrossFit’s “Hero” workouts, named to commemorate U.S. military servicemen killed in combat. Possibly its most grueling, “Murph” goes like this: One mile run, 100 pullups, 200 pushups, 300 air-squats, one mile run. A good “Murph” time is 45 minutes and members of the gym wobbled back into the box, as CrossFit gym spaces are known, as they completed the final mile. At 45:10 Eddie Aiduck of Southampton was one of the first to finish. The participants had gathered to complete “Murph” as a celebration for fellow member, Dan Farrell, who was celebrating one year at the Southampton facility. Joining change his life. Farrell, of Hampton Bays, came to CrossFit Hamptons with a goal to get into better shape. While “Murph” was a celebration for one of the facility’s many dedicated members, Jay Jinks, co-owner of CrossFit Hamptons and a certified trainer at the facility, was in the ring of participants, chipping away at the multitude of reps, with reason to celebrate as well. CrossFit Hamptons, which was founded by Jinks, his father Jay Jinks Jr., and business partner Jessica Insalaco, celebrated one year in business on January 2. Jinks, a Green Beret with the U.S. Special Forces, first learned of CrossFit while stationed in Iraq in 2006. Needing to increase his physical ability for the demand of his responsibilities as a serviceman, Jinks and a friend began visiting an area coffee shop to download CrossFit videos. They completed the workouts at their military base’s gym. “I went from 240 to 215 [pounds] in three months, and my physical stamina was excellent—my strength was there to pick up my gear or a fellow soldier or team member,” says Jinks. Insalaco, one of the facility’s head trainers as well as co-owner, encourages anyone to give the fitness program a try, as the demanding workouts can be scaled for anyone no matter age or physical ability. CrossFitters engage a variety of skills and styles of training, from Olympic weight lifting to gymnastics, in order to achieve results. Strike A Pose! At-Home Yoga Videos
T
he weather has suddenly turned nice and you’ve realized that there’s less than a month until you need to be Memorial Day Weekend beach ready. Proven to increase flexibility and bring peace of mind, yoga provides a solid workout, especially for your core. If you’re pressed for time, though, getting to class can be a chore—especially as traffic picks up. Springtime fitness resolutions can still be met from the comfort of your own home. (Or, if you’re feeling particularly ambitious and have some 4G access, from the comfort of a slice of sand. Few things beat the peace and solitude of practicing yogaon-the-go, on the beach.) Before beginning the day, I pulled out the trusty MacBook—the source of all things YouTube. Pushing the coffee table out of the way, I cleared space for the yoga mat, where I proceeded to indulge in several online, free, streaming yoga videos. The selection has come a long way in the past year; now including everything from 10-minute gentle morning yoga stretches to hour-long vinyasa flow classes, from beginner to advanced. There are even different lengths of yoga music so you can set about your own practice if you already have a routine in place. Here are a few of my favorites: Solalunayoga’s “10 Minute Yoga Sequence: Backbends & Quad-Stretch Targeting” is perfect for when you’re already a little warmed up and need some extra stretching in the quads. The 10-minute sequence is so non-committal, time-wise, so it’s easy to just drop down to the mat while your tea is steeping. Taught by Megan, a surfer and owner of a cute little dog who sometimes interferes, this beachy video is fun, quick and uplifting.
Sarah Beth Yoga’s “Intermediate Yoga for a Beach Bod” is a nice 30-minute long sequence that moves quickly and focuses on breathing. The instructor narrates while poses are demonstrated by someone in their kitchen. Be prepared for plank poses and enjoy feeling sore afterwards if you haven’t done them in a while. YogaYak’s “Grounding Afternoon Yoga Practice: Full Length Intermediate Class” is an ultra-relaxing 45 minute flow filmed in a gazebo in Montezuma, Costa Rica. Beginners, too, will be able to enjoy this one. Lesley Fightmaster’s “Yoga Body Workout: Free Yoga Class” is a 45-minute vinyasa yoga class, narrated by a very calming, soothing voice with an emphasis on the breath, is ideal for beginner to intermediate yogis. This is one of the best free videos I’ve found. The Secret Bliss’s “Detox Yoga ‘Hangover’ Sequence!” is a lovely, relaxing, quick 11-minute video that’s excellent for the morning after partying. In a beautiful pool-side surrounding, it focuses on detoxifying twists, turns and leg stretches that are all done on your back so you can really ease into the day.

Hallelujah! Spring Has Come to the East End Although I’m willing to declare that spring has arrived, with trepidation in light of the cold weather of late, plants and birds seem more confident. As I uncover plants during spring cleanup, I find that many have already begun the season, evidenced by cautious but determined new growth. We have been teased by crocus and snowdrops and though daffodils seem to give assurance of warm weather, don’t let them fool you…they can live though a surprise spring snow! I was recently walking with a client through her just-cleaned garden. The stalks and other residue of last year’s plants were gone, leaving little indication of the garden’s coming exuberance. Having purchased her property during the winter, she has no image of the garden in full display and so experienced the newly cleaned garden as almost barren ground. This garden is large and densely planted but does look barren at this time—unless one knows what to look for. So we took a tour. Roses that looked like skeletons of their coming selves showed their tiny buds, which will grow quickly and will eventually become flowering shrubs by June. We found fat buds of
hydrangeas lurking on branches that looked dead. I pulled back just a little earth from the crowns of peonies and there were the plump, red shoots. Only a few daffodils were blooming but I pointed out that there are many more coming. Leaves of early tulips are just poking up above the surface. We saw new leaves of chionodoxa, muscari, camassia, large alliums and nectaroscordum just beginning to show. We moved mulch to see hosta buds “lying in wait” and the gnarled heads of ferns waiting to uncurl their fronds as soon as possible. Many perennials showed their first growth hugging the ground and we saw the small, delicate first leaves of oriental poppies. I pointed out a place where a huge display of crocus would soon happen. And that is just the beginning. She will have a lot of surprises in the future! Don’t assume that because there’s no indication of life that a plant is dead. I leave stalks and stems in the fall just so I know where every plant lives. If no life is apparent when I do the cleanup, I leave short stems to mark the place. Some plants sprout new growth later than others. In my own garden, the daffodils that have been in bud since January have bloomed. This is an old clump so when it finally does bloom, it BLOOMS! I planted 100 new daffs last year and eagerly await their presence. Over the years, I have planted early, mid, and late-blooming daffodils so I have them in bloom for as long as possible.
Single crocus, muscari and chionodoxa plants show up in strange places each year...not where they are supposed to be. I think the squirrels move them. No matter where they live, they all make me commit to planting more of them in the fall—one can never have too many of these small delights. And each spring I’m determined to order more daffodils and other spring blooming bulbs. There’s no better way to begin the season. Some plants were lost this year due to extended periods of ice sitting on their crowns. Some gaura did not make it but some planted in very protected areas did. And don’t count it out too soon. It sprouts later and from wood that might look dead. I plant it knowing it may only be an annual. I like gaura so much that I will plant it again wishing that it was stronger. I’m waiting to see if the Hardiness Zone 8 ligularia that has survived for several years, with much care, will return. As I toured the garden today, I saw baby digitalis, hollyhocks, lychnis coronaria and mullein. The camellia and lilac buds are swollen and getting ready to pop. And a very sweet corylopsis spicata...winter hazel...has just bloomed. Dahlias, gladiolas, lilies, spring-planted vegetables, pansies, ranunculus, new shrubs and more are at the garden centers. James DeMartis is a longtime resident of the Hamptons, and a celebrated artisan who regularly wears many hats, from artist to blacksmith. Growing up in a family that emphasized and valued art, DeMartis learned early on to appreciate working with his hands. His mother is an avid collector and his father was a fine art painter. Combined with the rigorous blacksmith training DeMartis received years ago, he has now developed a unique set of skills as a sculpture and designer. In 2001, he set up a studio in the artistic enclave of Springs in East Hampton, complete with a coal forge. Since opening his studio, he has been busy creating beautiful works of art and custom-designed furniture and sculptures for residences across the East End. Visiting his studio, I noticed that there’s creative inspiration sprinkled throughout. His father’s paintings hang prominently, as well as hand-forged pieces and collages of his own work. His experiences as an artist are varied from exhibiting in art galleries, to a stint working on the production of the film Noah.
He built the big, metal stove shown in that epic. As his popularity has grown, career opportunities have taken him more frequently to work on projects in Manhattan. With a long history of working and training as a blacksmith, he uses a coal forge in his studio in order to create metal work from copper, zinc, stainless steel, brass, bronze and aluminum. DeMartis values the simplicity and precision of working with hand tools, and creates products from commissioned art pieces to stair rails, gates, table bases and other furniture. Working with four specific tools (anvil, hammer, fire and metal), he makes his pieces at the forge in order to create one-of-a-kind works of art. He even uses a specific type of West Virginian coal that he handpicks, because he feels it heats and burns to the perfect temperature. In addition to his commissioned art pieces, DeMartis continues his work in the blacksmith trade for the Wheelwright Shop in Bridgehampton and the Parson’s Forge in Springs. Be on the lookout for more exciting collaborations between DeMartis and the design world in the near future. It’s clear that the industry has become smitten with the artist. He is currently collaborating on projects with a variety of interior designers, architects and cultural institutions who value his unique commissioned art pieces, sculptures and

beautiful wares for the home and garden. He recently consulted on the Penthouse of the Greenwich Hotel, which was designed by Axel Voorvordt, as well as several private residences. This month, one of his sculptures will be on display at Guild Hall’s Artist Members Exhibition in East Hampton. He also created three pieces for Dodd’s and Eder kitchen and bathroom showroom in Sag Harbor, which are now on display. Additionally, he is working on a fourth piece to be included in an outdoor exhibition this August. He designs a custom line of furniture with Comerford Collection, as well as a collection of table and desk bases, made from hand-hammered bronze shades for Lindsey Adelman in New York. He recently created a 12’ x 16’ stainless steel willow tree art sculpture for artist Josh Hadar. DeMartis is also socially conscious, and regularly donates pieces to philanthropic projects for the East End Hospice, The Breast Health Coalition, International Surgical Mission and more. This past Easter weekend, he designed a 2.5’ tall egg sculpture for the New York City Big Egg Hunt, which supports Studio In a School and Elephant Family. DeMartis was one of 260 artists in the citywide, five-borough hunt, display and auction. Local artist/designer/blacksmith, DeMartis is at an exciting time in his career. Richie Notar Brings Harlow to Sag Harbor
R
estaurateur Richie Notar—of Nobu and Studio 54 fame—has a lot on his plate. In addition to running his thriving midtown restaurant, Harlow, he’s working on opening a jazz lounge and bakery in Harlem as well as a much buzzed about East End venture in the former Sag Harbor B. Smith’s space, also to be named Harlow. We caught up with the power player to find out more about what he’s got in the works.
How did the original Harlow come about? Only when I walked into the empty space. It was site specific and I came up with the concept only after seeing the property. When a friend showed me the space on 56th and Park, I happened to be feeling nostalgic about the New York I experienced in the late ’70s—when I was a kid driving for Steve Rubell—places like Regine’s with bit of glamor. The room was built by Randolph Hearst for Marion Davies. That history excited me so I designed a modern day New York chic restaurant. How do you anticipate the two Harlow locations will compare? We will use the same team headed by Chef Danny Ye and Director of Operations Sean Dillon. They know the lay of the land in the Hamptons, so consistency and familiarity is something we feel we will bring to that space as well. We’ll feature our most popular dishes from the city and utilize the local bounty.

Spring Into Easy, Warm Salads Preheat oven to 450°. 3. Soften half the butter and, with back of spoon or fingertips, spread six 3” circles on a buttered cookie sheet. Melt remaining butter in a saucepan and set aside. 4. Peel the potatoes, then rinse and pat dry with paper toweling. Slice into rounds about 1/16” thick. Arrange potatoes in neat, overlapping circles on the buttered cookie sheet and press down firmly. Drizzle the remaining butter over each circle of potatoes and sprinkle lightly with salt. 5. Place in preheated oven and bake about 15 to 20 minutes until potatoes are crisp and golden brown. 6. About five minutes before the potatoes are done, toss the greens with the vinaigrette until well coated. Divide the greens on six salad plates. With a metal spatula, carefully loosen the bottom of the potatoes and arrange over the greens. Serve immediately.

WARM SALMON SALAD Serves 6 For the greens 6 cups mixed greens of radicchio, endive, romaine, watercress, etc. 2 tablespoons finely chopped flat-leaf parsley 2 tablespoons fresh tarragon leaves, coarsely chopped tarragon leaves or parsley sprigs for garnish For the vinaigrette 2 to 3 shallots, finely chopped 1 tablespoon grainy Dijon mustard 2 to 3 tablespoon sherry wine vinegar 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt freshly ground pepper 7 to 8 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil sea salt to finish
1. Wash each lettuce separately, spin-dry and carefully roll up in paper towels to absorb excess moisture. Put into reclosable plastic bags and refrigerate. They will remain fresh and crisp for several hours or overnight. 2. Prepare vinaigrette: Place shallots in a mixing bowl. Add vinegar, salt and pepper and stir to mix. Drizzle in oil while stirring with a fork or whisk until mixture is homogeneous. Taste to adjust seasoning.

Prepare vinaigrette: Put chopped shallots, mustard, vinegar, salt and pepper in a bowl. Slowly whisk in oil until mixture is homogenous. Taste to adjust seasoning if necessary. 3. With a sharp knife, score salmon skin on the diagonal. Repeat cutting in opposite direction to create a crosshatch effect. Rinse fish, pat dry with paper towels and put into a bowl. Mix shallots, basil and soy in a separate bowl and whisk in 2 tablespoons oil. Pour over fillets. Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate up to several hours ahead Preheat oven to 375°. 4. Heat remaining tablespoon oil in a large ovenproof skillet over medium heat. Put in salmon fillets skin side down and sauté about 5 minutes to crisp the skin (the flesh should still be pink). 5. Meanwhile, mix salad greens with the vinaigrette and gently toss to mix. Divide equally and arrange on six dinner plates. 6. Transfer salmon to preheated oven to crisp for 1 to 2 minutes then place each fillet over greens. Sprinkle with a dash of sea salt to finish, garnish with herbs, if desired, and serve. On the Summer Rental Season So Far We saw the rental season get very busy very fast at the top of the year, and then slow down during the storms of February and into March. Very recently it
has picked up again, as the weather has improved. Sales activity, on the other hand, was very active throughout the stormy weather. On East End Trends Well, the big trend is that sales activity has been robust over the past winter. In several price ranges, inventory, for the first time in a number of years, is actually getting short on supply. This will eventually put upward pressure on pricing. Yet another indication we’re headed into a much healthier sales environment.
