UMBrella Coaching Program Cohort 7 Closing Celebration

Page 1

Dear Cohort 7:

Congratulations on completing UMBrella’s Coaching Program! You made an important decision to take charge of your career by participating in this impactful program. If the past six cohorts’ experiences are any measure, I feel confident that you made new connections with other women on campus and strengthened existing bonds as well. This eight-month program delved into important topics that are crucial to your professional development and will prepare you for your leadership journey.

I encourage you to apply the new concepts, strategies, and skills you learned — from your coach and from the members of your cohort — to make meaningful changes in your personal and professional life. You are now a part of UMBrella’s network of seven cohorts of coaching programs and hundreds of women across UMB who have participated in the UMBrella Coaching Program over the past seven years. I hope that you will stay in touch with your coaching cohort for support and encouragement as you progress in your career at UMB. And I hope you will encourage your friends and colleagues to apply for the next cohort of the UMBrella Coaching Program.

I look forward to seeing you “under the UMBrella!”

Sincerely,

JENNIFER B. LITCHMAN, MA

Senior Vice President for External Relations, UMB Founder and Chair, UMBrella

Jennifer Litchman is senior vice president for external relations at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB). She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of South Carolina and a master’s degree in public communication from American University.

After six years working for the National Republican Congressional Committee and in the U.S. House of Representatives, Litchman left government service for the Business Roundtable, a nonprofit public policy organization of CEOs of the Fortune 200, where she was public information manager.

Litchman came to UMB in 1999 as director of public affairs at the School of Medicine and established the Office of Public Affairs, and, in 2002, she was promoted to assistant dean. Litchman was named chief communications officer and vice president for UMB in 2012, responsible for internal and external communications, strategic planning and crisis communications, branding and marketing, media relations, social media, web development, publications and editorial, alumni communications, and protocol and special events. In 2018, she was named senior vice president for external relations, adding community engagement and government affairs to her portfolio.

In 2014, Litchman founded the Council for the Arts & Culture to enhance the quality of life on campus and in the West Baltimore community by promoting the use of UMB’s public spaces for the visual and performing arts, as well as to raise awareness of the links between the arts and sciences. That same year, she founded UMBrella (UMB Roundtable on Empowerment in Leadership and Leveraging Aspirations), which works to support the success of women at UMB.

Originally from Ames, Iowa, she and her 10 best childhood friends are the subjects of the 2009 nonfiction New York Times bestseller “The Girls from Ames.”

She is a member of the Board of Directors of Baltimore’s Everyman Theatre and the Yumi CARES Foundation, and a member of the Women’s Leadership Advisory Board of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Baltimore. Litchman was named one of Baltimore magazine’s Women Who Move Maryland (2018) and one of Maryland’s “Top 100 Women” by The Daily Record (2016 and 2022), and is a member of the Leadership Maryland Class of 2017. She is also a two-time Emmy-nominated executive producer of the documentary series “From West Baltimore.”

PROGRAM REFLECTIONS

“Participating in the UMBrella Coaching Program was an incredibly valuable experience. The program gave me the structure and support to clarify my professional goals, develop a plan to achieve them, and navigate any challenges along the way. Beyond personal growth, it also provided a fantastic opportunity to build meaningful connections across the entire UMB campus. I’m grateful for the insights, mentorship, and community I gained through this program, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to invest in their professional development!”

“Transitioning to UMB for my career was a huge leap of faith, and I wrestled with the idea that I did not belong here. I joined the UMBrella Coaching Program not only to gain mentorship but also to understand why I felt this way. The program helped me tackle my imposter syndrome headon, providing me with the tools to grow and overcome a challenge many women face at some point in their careers. My coaching group ofered a safe space for me to learn, grow, and be supported by other women who believed in me and the power of women helping each other.”
