THE CYBERNETIC HOSTEL

Study Abroad Summer 2017

Helsinki, Finland The hostel is located on a small island in the harbor off Kauppatori, which is located in downtown Helsinki. The island is host to 11 identical floating hostel structures. Eleven new boat lines are arranged around the downtown district of Helsinki and around Aalto University to provide transportation to the hostel. These lines are run by self-driving boats that will pick you up by using GPS to locate the dock one is waiting at. Once the boat arrives it will bring you back to the hostel on a pre set path. Upon arriving at the hostel, one will notice a towering crane coming out of a small island surrounded

by Eleven metal fluid like objects. The hostels comprise of an upstairs and a downstairs. The upstairs contains amenities for people visiting the overnight accommodations, including a bed, kitchen, bathroom, and living room space. The downstairs hosts a data center that is occupied by the data of people staying in the hostel and certain businesses around Helsinki. The data center allows for the space to never be empty inside the hostel and someone is always in the space through the virtual data. When the space is occupied by physical bodies, the crane located on the small island picks the hostel up and relocates it onto the island. The relocation allows for the occupants to engage with the community sauna located on the island. This gives them free reign over the sauna at their given time.

Modular Inclusive Research Architecture, located in Cherokee Farms, Knoxville Tennessee, is geared towards the com­pany of Ernst and Young. The program is designed for four tenants, three geared towards the inhabitants of the research campus and the other being for the workers of Ernst and Young. Research, exclusivity, and showcase are just some characteristics to describe EY, and are three key design tactics taken into designing M.I.R.A. With a focus on using local products and lower construction footprint, wood is utilized on a module of 20’ by 20’, with other ma­terials like glass, concrete, and steel wrapping around the structure acting as a protective shell, promoting transparency be­tween the workers and visitors of the research campus allowing views and natural daylight to penetrate into the two major zones of research and office program.

This piece of architecture also showcases LEED characteristics like water collection used to irrigate a green roof system and raised planters, PV panels to collect power for lighting fixtures, and utilizing a geothermal pump to efficiently cool the spaces through an under floor distribution system. This building, along with the rest of the research campus promotes Cherokee Farm as a lead research campus promoting values that could influence the future of design in Knoxville.

KNoxville, TN The Urban Wilderness at Ijams Nature Center is looking for a base camp on Mead’s Quarry that includes spaces for overnight accommodations, community gathering, educational outreach, and a vendor kiosk. The proposal I am submitting will separate these programmatic spaces into three distinct areas through the use of exposure vs. seclusion. The overnight accommodations will be located farthest away from the entrance sheltered by an existing natural rock wall creating private spaces. Educational Outreach will be placed as an intermediate zone between the overnight accommodations and the vendor kiosk creating spaces for public gathering and private study. The vendor kiosk will be closest to the entrance located next to the parking lot allowing for people to gather and rent kayaks for use on Mead’s Quarry. The public aspect of the building allows for a retail store and an exterior beer garden to be located in and around the kiosk.

Fibrous systems

Spring 2018 - Group Katie lamb and Laura Haun

KNoxville, TN Fibrous Systems is a tower like structure consisting of 30 components that are wrapped in glass and carbon fiber, varying in curvature. Within the time constraint of a semester, 30 components were drilled, wrapped, cured, and assembled within 8 days. The need for reinforcement within the construction of this system was mapped and plotted onto the glass fiber. The placement was purposeful in following the structural loads throughout the structure, to reinforce the system. The components were formed by using a 3d voronoi script altered to the surface of the tower. Placement of the structure, radius, and thickness was important to the structural capacity as well as forming the structure on a component per component based. With using the robotic arm, there were many constraints within size of the components, therefore the points were pulled away in specific areas in order to fit within the robots reach. This was taken into the design constraint and utilized within larger components. Vectors were taken from the voronoi component, and utilized within the patterning of the drill. Allowing for the components to fit together seamlessly. The end construction was a 15’ inhabitable structure made entirely of Glass and Carbon Fibers linked together with zip ties.
