We had a fantastic start to the month with the premiere of the Tony ® Award-Winning Best Musical, Kimberly Akimbo. Then, we had the incredible saxophonist, Kenny G , return to play his greatest hits. We continued the month with the hilarious and heartfelt Menopause the Musical 2 – Cruising the Change sponsored by WakeMed Women’s which had the crowd laughing out loud.

May brought the return of Brit Floyd , the world’s greatest Pink Floyd experience. Waxahatchee performed to a soldout crowd of fans, and Travis Tritt returned to put on a wonderful performance of his classic country songs. We then welcomed fan favorite Get The Led Out , who put on a rocking show of Led Zeppelin songs, and comedian/actor/writer Jim Jefferies performed his hit stand-up comedy.

We ended the month with Broadway’s most electrifying new musical, Back to the Future: The Musical, and we celebrated the best of local high school musical at The DPAC Rising Star Awards , hosted by Clay Aiken with special guest J. Harrison Ghee.

We can’t wait to see what is in store for the month of June as we wrap up our season, and we are very appreciative of your continued support.

The DPAC Rising Star Awards

This season, The DPAC Rising Star Awards reviewed 44 local high school musical theater productions, which included 180 nominated students for the Best Actor and Best Actress award categories. The judges hand selected 20 student performers as “Finalists,” who were in the running for The DPAC Rising Star Awards “Best Actor” and “Best Actress” awards categories. Finalists participated in two weeks of rehearsals, workshops and auditions leading to their performance on DPAC’s stage on May 29.

Tony ® Award winner J. Harrison Ghee was a Special Guest this year and met with the Finalists, sharing wisdom and performing alongside them during the awards show. Josiah Jennings (Hillside High School, Durham, NC) was selected as Best Actor and Carmen Sophia Dubon (Weaver Academy, Greensboro, NC) was selected as Best Actress. Josiah and Carmen received $2,000 in scholarships and an all-expense paid trip to New York City to compete in the Jimmy Awards. They will rehearse at Julliard, work with Broadway coaches, and make their Broadway debuts on the Minskoff Theater stage where Disney’s The Lion King performs year-round.

Thank you to Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina for being a part of The DPAC Rising Star Awards.
