He has over 275,000 followers on his personal Instagram account (@briankelly), and over 700,000 on his business Instagram account(@ thepointsguy), where he gives advise on traveling with points and miles! Brian documents his world travels and gives great tips along the way! He’s been featured on many news outlets sharing his travel wisdom. Following him will make you want to quit your job and travel the world, so do so with caution!

I grew up in…Jamison, PA, and graduated from Central Bucks East in 2001.

My first international trip was…to the Cayman Islands in 1996. That was the first trip I used my dad’s frequent flyer miles to fly our family of six for free, which was pretty amazing.

My passion for travel developed when…I studied abroad in Madrid in 2005 and fell in love with travelling around Europe.

My favorite and least favorite travel experience abroad…

T

his spotlight is all about the women! Meet Doylestown residents Leyla Safavi and Meghan Delaney. Together, they are Garden Alley Therapeutics. They are both licensed with their master’s from Drexel University. Leyla focuses on couples and Meghan on family, trauma, grief, children 7+, teens, and divorce.

Their main concern is on the “system” within a family and relationships. We all play roles in the lives we live and the dynamic of how those roles play out has everything to do with why we keep encountering the same roadblocks.

It’s all about identifying behaviors. You can’t bring someone here and say, “fix this person.” One’s issues likely have to do with the attachment they have to those around them. That attachment dictates how the relationship plays out.

“Small changes / small shifts are a lot of times all it is,” states Leyla. “We try to simplify it; you need to show up in a different way.”

As soon as I walked into Delaney and Safavi’s office, I felt at peace. It’s dressed in lots of different shades of white and green. The color, decor and space were chosen specifically to create a calming atmosphere. They are big on the understanding of energy and environment.

Delaney and Safavi believe that from the moment you walk in, therapy begins.

Meghan has her undergraduate degree in business/marketing. She went to school in West Virginia and worked for a newspaper right out of college. However, she felt her true calling wasn’t being expressed, as she wanted to help people. Not long after, she enrolled in Drexel and graduated with her master’s degree in Family Therapy.

Leyla went to RIT for studio arts. She taught photography for a year out of college and felt a calling to go back to school to help people. She originally went for medical school and had some experience as an EMT. Eventually that evolved into her caring for people on a deeper level, leading to her enrollment into Drexel for Family Therapy.

Leyla & Meghan met in school and quickly became friends. They both graduated and independently put in their 3,000+ hours of work time to become officially ready to take on clients.

They both started their own LLC and had different offices for taking clients. Eventually, they would weekly cross over in Long Beach Island, NJ, and share space.

Healing wounds is the approach here at Garden Alley Therapeutics. “We really care about and will take care of our clients,” says Safavi. “We want to heal relationships. If I change one family, I heal generations after me.”

They offer intensive sessions over a 2–3-day span that are 8-12 hours for families and couples. These can be done over a weekend, or another 2–3-day span during the week. This allows the client and therapist to go deep and get to the core of issues much quicker than spanning it over 8-12 typical 1-hour appointments.

Another alternative practice they are introducing is working with Ketamine. It is a legal substance that works on depression and trauma and allows the person to heal. This, as they stated, helps to get the person out of their own way. Then true progress can occur.

In addition, Safavi and Delaney are creating a new course. Collaborating with a holistic minded doctor, they drafted a program called Food Mood. It is an in-person intro course on how what we eat affects us.

“My hope is that we can help people connect the mind, body and soul,” states Delaney. “It has to be a collaboration with our clients. Us and them. At that point, we can all gain a different perspective.”

These two ladies blew me away with their peaceful nature, their want to do things alternatively and the depth to which they will go to meet the needs of their clients and the community.

If you are looking for an alternative measure to heal yourself and/or your family, schedule an appointment with these ladies. I have met and been to various therapists over the years and I felt a true shift based on their approach. I believe this is a new, improved, and much needed practice in Bucks County. I trust they will help many people in need of the deep healing that can only occur when you are working with the right person, committed to working with you as an individual.

2022 Bucks County Classic Set for September 11th

or the 18th year the streets of Doylestown will be transformed into a high speed criterium bicycle race course on September 11th. The premier race in Pennsylvania, the Bucks County Classic draws racers from across the country and around the world. In 2021 Paola Andrea Muñoz Grandón, a 2012 Chilean Olympian, 6x Chilean National Road Race Champion and 2017 Pan American Road Champion won the Doylestown Health Pro Women’s Race.

Bungalow Beauty

G

ood things come in small packages, right? Take the bungalow, for example. We have many examples of this style of home in our little town. Several are now being sold and either torn down or expanded. This super sweet bungalow at 217 Union Street, although it has been expanded, has maintained its inherent character and charm. Built in the 1930s, the little gem has just 1267 sq ft interior space with 3 bedrooms and 1 ½ baths. It sits on a 49’ x 165’ lot (0.16 acres) at the corners of N Hamilton and Union Streets.

You can see bungalows in older neighborhoods, by country roads and in backwater towns all over the US. Small by today’s standards, even the largest of bungalows are modest compared with the McMansions that began to be built in the 1990s. Unless they’ve been expanded, they will have two or three bedrooms, just 1 bath, a nice-sized living room that flows into the dining room, a kitchen, and very often, a basement.

The bungalow seems so totally American … but its origin may surprise you. Originally called a banggolo or bangala and shaped like an overturned ship (curved roof that extended nearly all the way to the ground), the bungalow derives from Bengali, India. As the British colonized India, they adopted the banggolo, changing the name to bungalow and making some modifications. They added a veranda (from the Hindi word varanda), a type of wrap-around porch with hipped roofs, wooden doors, and glass-paned windows. They were

tropical houses in India built initially as waystations for travelers. The architecture was adopted by British officers stationed in India during the 19th century. The houses were found to be practical, with their verandas shaded by the overhanging roof. The floor plan was open to facilitate the movement of air in the hot climate of India. Often, there were doors from the inner rooms to the outer living spaces to take advantage of every whisper of wind. They were simple houses and very livable then, and still so today.

In the US, one of the first areas to build the bungalow-style was California. The tropical Indian architecture was well adapted to the sunny climate of Southern California, where outdoor living has always been a part of daily life. Because the bungalow was a simple home by definition, it was perhaps inevitable that the style would be discovered and explored by the architects of the Arts & Crafts Movement. Until 1906 in the US, bungalows were considered to be summer homes, small cottages by the lake or sea, to be used as retreats. As the architects of the Arts & Crafts Movement worked their magic, more and more of them experimented with natural materials like indigenous rock, local woods, and metals like copper and iron. The American Craftsman bungalow typified the styles of the American Arts & Crafts movement, with typical features including low-pitched roof lines on a gabled or hipped roof, deeply overhanging eaves, exposed rafters or decorative brackets under the eaves, and a front porch or veranda beneath an extension of the main roof.

Why do we love our bungalows? The American bungalow was able to be built for as little as $900 before World War I. As a result, they helped many Americans fulfill the American Dream of owning a home. Their simple lines allowed for easy and fast construction, which led to precut “kit homes” that could be shipped anywhere near a railway. During the turn of the 20th century, the Sears Company and the lesser-known Aladdin Company were two of the manufacturing companies that produced prefabricated kits and sold them from catalogs for construction on-site.

Bungalows took hold not only because they were convenient, but also because the style was simple, casual, and unfussy. It was an undeniable reaction to the ornate characteristics of the previous era’s Victorian homes. Bungalows, through their sturdy look, earthy colors, and homey feel, exude the sense of stability, old-fashioned values, and the American Dream.

Meet Leela…

Age Leela was when Kate became her mom: Estimated to be about 8 weeks. Kate picked her birthday to be May 12th. Now Leela is almost 9 years old!

How Kate acquired Leela: Through a rescue organization. Kate says, “I knew when I started that I wanted to adopt a rescue dog. I was approved by an organization that rescues dogs from high kill shelters in the South. They had an adoption event in New Jersey. I had a particular dog in mind that I wanted to meet. That dog was shy but Leela came right to the front of her enclosure and we bonded right away.

Leela was meant to be Kate’s fur baby because: “At the adoption event there were a few larger, older dogs and one started barking. Most all of the puppies hid in their spaces or turned away, shy. Leela just looked around, curious. I knew she was the right dog for me and my downtown apartment Doylestown lifestyle.”

Doylestown Arts Festival Returns In September

he highly anticipated Doylestown Arts Festival will take over the quaint historic streets of Doylestown Borough this September 10-11, from 10 AM - 5 PM daily. With art, music, and activities for all ages, the festival will continue its mission to highlight independent artists, support small businesses, and raise awareness of the local cultural scene.

Celebrating 31 years of creativity, the Doylestown Arts Festival remains free to the public, helping to boost accessibility to the arts for the entire community.

The Doylestown Arts Festival will see the normally bustling streets of Main Street, State Street, Hamilton Street, and Oakland Avenue transformed into a lively outdoor marketplace featuring unique and one-of-a-kind works of art from over 150 independent artists. Leela’s favorite thing to do with Kate: She loves to go with Kate. Go with her ANYWHERE. So even if Kate’s running an errand, she takes her with her. She would rather sit in the passenger seat with the windows down while she goes into the post office than stay at home.

Approximately how many walks they’ve taken together: Kate estimates that they are approaching their 10,000th walk together.

Since Leela was raised in an apartment, she became quite used to walks and now even though she has a yard space, she insists on walks. Minimum three per day, rain or shine, hot or cold. She *might* abstain if it’s pouring rain because she doesn’t like to get soaked.

Best part of being a dog mom: “Dogs (and any pets) are a gift. They make such a great impact on us in a short amount of time. Leela loves unconditionally and is giving me her whole life, all her trust, and all her love. It’s my job to be worthy of that as much as possible.

Adopting her was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made and I do my best not to take it for granted. She makes me smile every day.

n August, Peddler’s Village, a shopping, dining, lodging, and family entertainment destination in the heart of historic Bucks County, PA, will host a Peach Month. The event, which will include peach specials in Peddler’s Village restaurants every day, will kick off with a weekend-long Summer Sidewalk Sale starting on Friday, August 5, with live music performances, family activities, and outdoor sales of fresh peaches, peach pies, and other peach products taking place on Saturday, August 6 and Sunday, August 7. Through August 31, large sand sculptures depicting Bucks County icons and eliciting beach themes will be on display every day.

On Saturday, August 6, from 6 to 8 p.m., Peddler’s Village will continue the family fun with a free Beach Blanket Bash, a 60s-themed dance party celebrating its 60th anniversary. The Beach Blanket Bash, which will take place on the Visitor & Event Center Field and under the Event Tent, will feature live music by the Mojo Kings Dance Band, a hula hoop contest, a dance off, lawn games, fire pits with s’mores, a foam party, and more, as well as pay-as-you-go food trucks and drinks.

Subsequent August weekends will feature live entertainment and Peach Month merchandise, local peaches, pies for sale at the Village General Store, and the August restaurant specials. The Water Wheel Food Tent will be serving food specials and peachinfused beverages.

Other events in August include weekend murder mystery and comedy shows, sand sculpting workshops on August 13 and 14, and Food Truck Thursday on August 25.

goods, gifts, art, toys, books, specialty foods, and more during the weekend-long Summer Sidewalk Sale that runs from Friday, August 5 through Sunday, August 7.

Peach-flavored sweet treats will be available at the Lucky Cupcake Company, and Peach Month merchandise, local peaches, and peach pies will be available at the Visitor & Event Center through the month.

cardinal chirps Submissions Now Being Accepted for Phillips’ Mill’s 5th Annual Juried Emerging Playwright Competition

Are you a playwright who has written a new short play you think is ready for an audience? Are you anxious to see your work presented in public for the very first time? Consider submitting your work to the 5th Annual Juried Emerging Playwright Competition (EPC) presented by the Phillips’ Mill Community Association. The submission period is open now through August 31, 2022.

The competition is open to all aspiring playwrights 18 and older as well as seasoned writers who have new short plays to present.

These works must not have been previously performed except in workshops or in educational settings.

A total of six rotating jurors have chosen these winning plays.

Playwrights run the gamut of novice writers to seasoned playwrights with new work ready to bring to the stage.

Winning playwright Dominique Cieri described her experience, saying “The plays were complex and wonderful, the performances more than honored each play.” She went on, “I loved hearing all the playwrights speak about their processes and plays.”

The Emerging Playwright Competition is funded by donations from generous sponsors who encourage budding artists to create new work for the stage and provide the opportunity to put it before the allimportant audience. Holy ‘Que Smokehouse Expands to Doylestown Location

After opening its first location outside Peddler’s Village in Lahaska, the Texas-style BBQ joint has expanded to Doylestown. The second location on Main Street Marketplace will feature a rotating menu that offers takeout and delivery.

Doylestown Gets $569K Grant For Traffic Upgrades

Three esteemed jurists will read up to fifty blind submissions and choose six of the best to be read on stage by actors for a live audience at Phillips’ Mill on November 19, 2022. Winning playwrights will also receive a $100 prize. After the readings, the playwrights will entertain questions and comments from the audience.

Twenty-four exciting new works have been read so far in front of discerning audiences in the history of the competition.

Doylestown is receiving a combined $569,492 for fiber interconnection of traffic signals at seven intersections along Swamp Road (Route 313), as well as flashing yellow arrow and advance dilemma-zone detection along Route 611 from Edison Furlong Road to Kelly Road through PennDOT’s “Green-Light-Go” program, Gov. Tom Wolf announced July 13.

The PennDOT grants are provided as reimbursements to municipalities for improvement upgrades to existing traffic signals. Grant funding could be used for LED technology installation, traffic signal retiming, special event development and traffic signal monitoring, as well as general technological improvements.

Oscar Hammerstein Museum And Theatre Education Center Announce Winners For The 2022 Hammerstein International Youth Solo Contest

Winners for the nonprofit Oscar Hammerstein Museum and Theatre Education Center’s (OHMTEC) International Youth Solo Contest were announced in a pre-recorded awards ceremony broadcast recently. The second annual contest attracted 151 applicants from near and far, including representation from five continents. International participants were from Australia, Indonesia, Ireland, the Philippines, South Africa, Thailand, and the United Kingdom. Twenty U.S. states and the District of Columbia were represented among this year’s competitors.

The contest serves the very important job of educating young musical theatre enthusiasts about the tremendous influence Oscar Hammerstein II had on the development of the modern Broadway musical as we know it. The contest also raises international awareness of the nonprofit’s mission to save Oscar Hammerstein’s Doylestown home and open the home to the public as a museum. Plans include building a theatre education center on the site of the existing bank barn.

Helena Badiali, a student at Central Bucks High School West in Doylestown, Pennsylvania and the winner of the High School Division performed the song “The Sound of Music” from the musical of the same name as her entry in the competition.

“I chose this song because I had the pleasure of playing the main character ‘Maria’ in my school’s production this year,” said Badiali.

“Maria Rainer is completely unafraid to be herself. She’s passionate, wild and she loves to sing. But most importantly, she can look the world in the eyes and tell it exactly what she wants. Thanks to Rodgers and Hammerstein, girls everywhere have a confident role model and an iconic song to match.”

cardinal chirps New Officer at Central Bucks Regional Police Department Officer Nicole Crescenzo has joined the ranks of the Central Bucks Regional Police Department.

Officer Crescenzo was sworn in by Doylestown Borough Mayor Noni West at the June 23 Police Commission meeting held at the Doylestown Borough Hall.

Crescenzo is a graduate of Temple University’s Police Academy/Act 120 and is an active full-time officer with the Bucks County Sheriff’s Department.

Three Tony-Nominees Revisit Their Broadway Work for Bucks County Playhouse’s Dames At Sea A trio of Tony-nominated artists, Randy Skinner, Anna Louizos and David C. Woolard, will recreate their work for the Broadway revival of “Dames at Sea,” when the lighthearted, dance-centric musical debuts at Bucks County Playhouse, August 12 – September 11. The production begins previews August 12 with an official opening performance on Saturday, August 13 at 7:30 pm. “Dames at Sea” is the third production in Bucks County Playhouse’s homecoming season, which is sponsored by Bank of America.

Producing Director Alexander Fraser and Producer Josh Fiedler recently announced details on the casting and creative team of “Dames at Sea,” the third production of the Playhouse’s season — the 10th since its reopening in 2012.

“Since Robyn, Josh and I arrived at the Playhouse eight years ago, we have encouraged the Broadway creative community — especially those we have previously worked with— to come to New Hope and use the Playhouse to produce work that is no longer possible on Broadway,” says Producing Director and CEO, Alexander Fraser. “It is a special thrill that the creative team of the Broadway revival of ‘Dames at Sea’ has agreed to rethink their production for a more intimate space. We believe that this upbeat show is the perfect tonic for the times, and we are excited to bring it to Playhouse audiences.”

“Dames at Sea” is a tap-happy musical, in the tradition of 42nd Street, that spoofs the high-spirited movie musicals of the 1930s.

Ruby steps off a bus from Utah and into her first Broadway show, but hours before the opening night curtain is to rise, the cast learns their theater is being demolished. So, Ruby and the cast, with the help of some adoring sailors, come up with an ingenious plan to ensure that the show goes on.

The Playhouse production will play the following schedule: Tuesdays at 7:30 pm, Wednesdays at 2:00 pm, Thursdays at 2:00 pm and 7:30 pm, Fridays at 8:00 pm, Saturdays at 2:00 pm and 8:00 pm (Except Saturday, August 13), and Sundays at 2:00 pm. The opening performance will be held Saturday, August 13 at 7:30 pm.

Rotary Club of Doylestown Honors Individuals for Community Service at 12th Annual Four Way Test Awards

T

he Rotary Club of Doylestown honored community leaders in 4 different categories; presented its high school essay speech contest winner, Luke Dudeck; dispersed grants totaling $35,445 to seven non-profits; and honored Rotarian of the Year, Ken Snyder, at its 12th annual FourWay Test Awards Breakfast held on May 25th at Doylestown Country Club, 20 Country Club Lane in Doylestown.

Four-Way Test Awards: This year’s 4 honorees have been chosen for their volunteer contributions to the community in the categories of business, non-profit, community service and health care and adherence in all aspects of their lives to the guidelines the Rotary Four-Way Test: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Is it beneficial to all concerned?

The honorees in the Business category this year are Tom and Barb Hebel. They both volunteer for many community organizations including Pearl S Buck International, Bucks Beautiful and the VIA. Ron Strouse, former Doylestown Mayor and honored in the Community Service category, has worked with too many organizations to list, but some include the Coalition to Support the Homeless, the County Theater and Discover Doylestown.

The Rotary Club of Doylestown decided to break an important rule this year because of the unique circumstances of the last two years. The Healthcare award this year goes to Doylestown Health which breaks the Club rule that these awards are always given for unpaid work and always to a single person or couple. In this unprecedented and difficult time for both the community and its healthcare workers, the Doylestown Rotary Club is delighted to honor Doylestown Health for their hard work and creative approach to caring for our community.

Joseph and Alexis Ridge-Simek, owners of Dragonfly Yoga, are being honored in the Non-Profit category. The Simeks founded and run the Fiaria Project, a non-profit organized to provide immediate help to foster families as they bring a child into their home.

High school essay contest: Luke Dudeck is the recipient of this year’s High School Essay Contest for his piece addressing climate change using Rotary’s principles of the Four-Way Test. He is currently a junior at Central Bucks West. Supporting the local community with charitable causes, school activities, and protecting the integrity of students, top his list of his personal goals.

Rotarian of the Year: Ken Snyder is a true Rotarian exemplifying its motto “Service above Self.” Ken is a very active member serving as Club secretary and on the Finance committee; participating in the many, many club volunteer activities; and regularly attending club meetings.

Outbound student: David Tessier will be the club’s outbound student spending a year studying in Porto Viejo, Ecuador.

Grant winners: The Doylestown Rotary Club holds two major fundraisers every year and then gives all the money back to the community. Since the beginning of our competitive Request for Proposal (RFP)

process, the club has given over $310,000 to 54 agencies and supported 111 projects that make our community a better place for everyone. Grant recipients are noted below.

Ann Silverman Community Health Clinic, $5,000 toward the creation of 5 short diabetic videos to serve the growing Hispanic immigrant population in Bucks County and provide culturally responsive diabetic education to low-income and uninsured patients of the Ann Silverman Community Health Clinic.

Credit Counseling, $3,000 to expand Financial Literacy Education (money management, savings and rebuilding credit) to serve the Bucks County Correctional facility in Doylestown, Good Friends, Gaudenzia, and Libertae which are drug/ alcohol treatment centers.

Bucks County Opportunity Council, $5,000 to assist in repairing, maintaining and inspecting accepted vehicles that will be used to provide transportation to families currently enrolled in the Economic SelfSufficiency program.

National Giving Alliance, $3,275 to purchase clothing including jeans, underwear, coats, mittens, gloves, etc. to provide homeless, at-risk, low-income children and families with winter coats, underwear, and appropriate seasonal clothing.

Mitza Circle, $1,075 to purchase and distribute diapers and provide material support to individuals and families dealing with crisis, poverty, homelessness, and serious illness.

The Fiaria Project, $5,000 to establish new warehouse space for essential items for new foster families and to expand services to support the mental health needs of foster children in Bucks County.

Advocates for the Homeless and Those in Need, $5,000 to purchase items needed to run a code blue shelter including cots, bedding thermals, clothing, equipment, breakfast items, and paper supplies such as toilet paper, paper towels, paper plates, napkins, etc.

STEM-YEA, $1,300 for three scholarships for three CB students and one student from the Parkland school district to attend the academy this July at Albright College.

The club is also donating the following monies: Fire Co-$1,000.00, Shelter Box$2,000.00, Borough Dam-$1,500.00, Turn the Town Teal-$1,000.00

What’s New In Town: Rita’s Ramps Up!

hey say that if you do what you love, you’ll find happiness. It became very apparent to me within minutes of meeting Tom Savage, the new owner of Rita’s of Doylestown, that he is doing what he loves.

In 2011, Tom and his family moved to Doylestown from Delaware. He fell in love with the small-town feel and decided this was home when he walked into Patrick Murphy’s Bagel Barrel on State Street. He loved the community feel within the store. This was a foreshadowing of things to come. During high school, Tom’s daughter began working at Rita’s, then owned by another couple. He enjoyed witnessing the life skills she learned.

The job helped shape her career path as she worked there until she graduated college.

Tom’s background is in the corporate world. After helping businesses succeed all over the world, Tom wanted to do something more. In January 2020, when the previous owners were looking to sell, Tom and his wife Ronalyn decided to go for it and purchased the franchise.

The original location on Swamp Rd., which had been a staple in the Doylestown community for 25 years, was only 625 sq ft.

When a larger space became available in the Cross Keys shopping center, the Salvages decided to take charge and go for it once again.

Local architect Charles Chappel designed the space. This new location is about triple the size of the old Rita’s, boasting an 1,800 sq. ft. endcap location with a state-of-the-art drivethru doubling the number of service windows.

The space is the new home of a rare machine called the Fusionate that can create unique soft serve custard flavors such as butter pecan, banana, mint, pistachio, and

more. Try the popular soft pretzels made by a small family business in Philly, or bring some custard home in a to-go container.

Savage’s “why” is very clear.

“It’s really about the people. This is about giving back to the community and helping young folks develop life skills and responsibility. For many of our Treat Team, this is their first job. We want to make this a great experience for them. I look at it as an opportunity for them to learn and make mistakes on my dime. We cannot succeed in life without making mistakes. Get some good experiences and have fun.

We all know what a good boss is. We all have had bosses we wish we didn’t have. I want to be the boss I always wanted. If that inspires the Treat Team to one day be the boss they always wanted someday, then great.”

Savage’s short-term goal is to re-establish

the business. “Many people still don’t know we are here”.

Long-term goals include catering events and never forgetting to give back to organizations such as the food pantry and the National Kidney Registry as his brother awaits a kidney transplant.

tasty tweets Peaches Bring Back Memories

I

t’s finally peach season! My brothers and I have a forever memory of awaiting this time of year to stand over our sink and take that first bite, let the juices run down to our elbows, and just smile at each other in pure bliss. At 28 years old, we still await this time of year, and we still do all those things.

Peaches to us always bring back a sense of home and happiness. We hope while reading this it brings you back to a little piece of home.

While peaches are not jam packed with nutrients, they have a very high vitamin C profile. Since vitamin C is such a powerful antioxidant, it is attributed to the prevention of the formation of free radicals, otherwise known as cancer. The vitamin C in peaches also helps with skin health and plays a role in the formation of collagen, which is the support system of the skin that helps in wound healing and skin strength.

Last year when Steve and I started Servis Events, we went around and tried to taste every local peach. In our opinions, Manoff Farm Market has by far the most delicious and juicy peaches we’ve tasted. Not only is their flesh so soft and delicate, but the flavor of them tastes like peach rings! They are by

far the most sweet and delicious treats in August.

Since these nature’s delicacies are so perfect, we don’t mess with them too much.

This month we are serving olive oil drizzled grilled peaches with balsamic and a brined pork chop. Last season we served a dessert we called “Peaches and Cream.” We would get the ripest peaches possible and some local creme fraiche. We then whipped the creme with a little bit of local cream, added in some fresh vanilla bean and served the peaches right over top of that spread, garnished with a little bit of mint. This is a dish that while eating we couldn’t help but smile the entire time.

If you see us around Doylestown, we would love to hear about everything you do with peaches! Don’t let the season pass by, they are not the same when they are not fresh and local.

Free Will Brewing Gets My Vote

ree Will Brewing has always been one of my favorite local micro-craft breweries. I associate them with wintertime, as it has been a family tradition to check out the holiday lights at Peddlers Village while having a pint of their wintery beers from their Lahaska Tap Room.

As I searched for a local brewer to write this article, I turned to my usual winter drink master and sought to check out what they have for the summer months. I went to their Perkasie tap house and tried a few of their current offerings.

The Yuzu Kaeru (4.4% ABV) is a Japanese rice lager with interesting floral notes. It was very refreshing to drink and appropriate for the season.

Another summer offering is the Rayo Mexican Lager (5% ABV). It was smooth and light, again perfect for the season.

Dreams & Nightmares (4.3% ABV) is a Pale Lager inspired by the Meek Mill song and an homage to the Philadelphia Eagles’ 2017 championship run.

A Place of . . . (sour fruit beers) recently replaced their smoothie beer line, MASH.

Currently, they have blueberry and raspberry options. They traded the fruit puree for the fresh fruit juice to make this switch.

Free Will also has a new artist creating their beer can art, and I have to say, they are quite attractive and very eye pleasing. Please check them out on their website; https:// www.freewillbrewing.com/stainless.

Free Will has 3 locations that are a stone’s throw away from Doylestown. Their main brewery and tap rooms are located in Perkasie (410 East Walnut St. Perkasie, PA), Lahaska (47 Peddler’s Village, Lahaska, PA), and Souderton (24 West Broad St. Souderton, PA). They have a good selection of their year-round favorites, but they have monthly releases of barrel-aged beers and, depending on popularity, seasonal beers like the Yuzu and Rayo that I have tried.

I highly recommend Free Will Brewing to anyone interested in trying a unique and flavorful beer. They have some fantastic beers on tap this summer that are sure to please.

Aerial Adventure Park Opens at Phoenix Sport Club

Peace Valley Treetop Trails Now Open for all Ages and Skill Levels Nature Center

REVOSE, PA – Give a jolt of energy to your lazy, languid daze of summer. (Pun intended) TreeTrails Adventures opened on July 29 with their adventure park, offering an adrenalin rush for climbers ages 7 to adult, beginners to experts.

“We couldn’t be more excited to open TreeTrails Adventures in Bucks County at the site of the Phoenix Sports Club,” said Gina Bertucci, park spokesperson.

“TreeTrails Adventures perfectly answers a resurgence of interest in action-packed experiences in the beauty of nature. It’s great to occasionally pause when climbing to take in a bird’s eye view of nature and experience the serenity of an old growth forest from the treetops.”

TreeTrails will open its signature attraction – TreeTrails Adventure Park with three trails that are color coded by the degree of challenge they provide. These trails are ideal for ages 7 – adult and include challenges made of cable, rope and wood that span between platforms built around trees. These challenges include quirky bridges, netted tunnels, gliding rides and zip lines. Trails for beginners take climbers 10 to 12 feet in the air while more difficult trails reach heights up to 50 feet above the forest floor. In addition to becoming comfortable at height, climbers who move from beginner to intermediate to expert trails also discover increasingly intense challenges that test balance, stamina, and strength. The adventure park’s three trails will be augmented with three additional trails by the end of the season.

In addition to the main attraction, KidTrails will soon follow to offer excitement to pint-sized climbers ages 4 – 7. The two trails for tykes include similar challenges to those in the main park. However, KidTrails is built to scale to accommodate the stride and reach of younger climbers. These trails are 2 – 3 feet off the ground, so adults can walk near children offering physical support and encouragement if necessary.

The TreeTrails Adventure Park and KidTrails are just a taste of the outdoor fun planned at Phoenix Sport Club in Trevose.

Two additional attractions are under construction and will open this season ZipTrails self-guided zip lines and ZipRacer dual racing zip lines.

The park’s fourth attraction – ZipRacer – is for the adrenalin junkie. At 1,000 feet long, these dual zip lines are sure to make you whoop out loud as you race a buddy from start to finish. ZipRacer tickets will be sold as single-ride or multi-ride adventures as well as in combination with other park attractions.

For all TreeTrails adventures, staff help guests put on harnesses and climbing gear and provide them with a park and equipment briefing. Guests using the main adventure park, ZipTrails, and KidTrails are monitored while they practice with gear before taking to the trees for self-guided adventures. Once practice is complete, adventurers in the main park and ZipTrails climb to a main platform – the starting point for courses they can explore for two hours.

KidTrails guests can play for an hour in this specially designed area.

Today’s Pathways To Acupuncture

Its funny how Acupuncture became famous in the United States. It actually began with a NYT journalist, James Reston, who traveled to China in the 70’s. He ended up getting an appendectomy and for the post-surgical pain he was treated successfully in a Chinese Hospital with Acupuncture and Moxibustion. When he came back to the states he wrote an article about his unexpected experience and this article was a widespread early introduction to Acupuncture in the United States.

The term ‘Acupuncturist’ refers to the application of Acupuncture, however for many of us who are also licensed herbalists the label Practitioner of East Asian Medicine more accurately defines our true scope of practice. Encompassing Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine, and Manual Therapies such as moxibustion, cupping, and various categories of massage . . . Classical Chinese Medicine has origins that date back to and even before the 13th century BC. It evolved over the past 3000 years from looking at disease as a supernatural phenomenon to something similar to modern allopathic medicine, which uses drugs that have the opposite effect of symptoms.

What are some of the healing effects of acupuncture? Who should get it?

East Asian Medicine is vast in application, and effective from birth to death. My philosophy, similar to the idea of hormesis, is that it wakes the dormant physiological processes that lie within, calming the spirit, relaxing the body, and is often emotionally balancing. Treatments can be strong or subtle, depending on what is needed. Acupuncture can also be practiced without Acupuncture needles, for the more sensitive nervous systems, while still achieving transformational results.

Most commonly patients come in for acute (injuries, sprains, and strains) and chronic (degenerative, long term) pain, however there is so much more that Practitioners of East Asian Medicine can do. To name a few, I have had a great success helping patients suffering with arthritis, migraines, anxiety, depression, insomnia, infertility, seasonal colds, dysmenorrhea, decreased libido, post chemo symptoms and symptoms of Lyme disease.

How does acupuncture(Eastern Medicine’s) goal differ from Western Medicine?

Western Medicine and Chinese Medicine are different and yet slightly similar in theory. Western allopathic medicine treatment entails the use of drugs with the opposite effect of the symptoms. Similarly, in East Asian Medicine if there is heat (inflammation) in the body we counter it using cooling herbs or heat clearing acupuncture points. What truly sets East Asian Medicine apart from Western Medicine is that it uses a whole systems approach, while Western Medicine often relies on specialists that address only one system at a time. In Western Medicine there lacks a lens from which to view the body as a whole, whereas in East Asian Medicine we have that lens.

One of the pros to having such a system is that we can treat issues that may feel subjective to a patient.

Meaning, if a lab test or X-ray comes back unremarkable and yet a patient is in pain we have a unique system of diagnosis and treatment that allows us to better serve that persons needs.

Tell us about your practice and how you got started?

People are always curious as to why I took this path, and there really is no straightforward answer, aside from “it’s where my feet led me”. In undergrad I was pre-med, but more importantly, I began studying and practicing Tai Chi. Under the now deceased Grandmaster San Gee Tam and his legacy, which still continues, Golden Flower Tai Chi International, I was fortunate to learn his curriculum, which entailed Tai Chi, Chi Gong, meditation, and other vital life skills.

So the influence of Chinese philosophy as a way of thinking and seeing the world expressed through Chinese internal martial arts really took hold at a young age.

Gradually, I found my way to postgraduate school in Portland Oregon, earning a 5 year doctorate, and masters degree in East Asian Medicine, as well as a certificate in Shiatsu. While in school I held multiple internships in short-term and long-term addiction facilities, as well as private practices.

I began my private practice in Northeastern PA in 2019, and eventually moved with my wife and Aussie-doodle to Doylestown to open a second location. My practice has been building steadily since.

Tell us about your volunteer work at Kin Wellness and the results you’re seeing with their clients?

Keith asked me to join Kin while I was working adjunctly at a similar cancer wellness center in Northeastern PA called Candy’s Place. It was perfect timing as I was transitioning to Doylestown. At Kin, I helped them set up and facilitate their Acupuncture program, which Keith and Kristina were both thrilled about.

Acupuncture has been extremely well received at Kin. We are offing both private sessions and group acupuncture, which has especially been a huge hit within the community. I am volunteering there monthly with another practitioner, Dr. Kara Szumski, who is offering acupuncture as well.

The community who are offered free services at Kin are a pleasure to work with. Those receiving Acupuncture are getting great results for post-chemo and post-radiation symptoms, such as nausea, fatigue, insomnia, constipation, neuropathy, and back pain.

What is the most unbelievable thing you’ve seen/done/healed with Acupuncture?

This question is a difficult one. I think all transformations, no matter how big or small are remarkable. I’m constantly in awe of this medicine and the outcomes I am seeing.

I had a 35-week pregnant mother come in a month ago who’s baby was in a breach position. After 2 treatments the baby flipped back on her own. I had a patient recently come in who lost her sense of smell one-and-a-half years prior to the visit, and within one treatment (using Acupuncture and herbal medicine) it was 50% restored.

Within two treatments her sense of smell was completely back to normal.

I’ve also had patients come in to the office in wheel chairs and leave walking.

Not to say that they were paralyzed, but in severe pain with muscle weakness.

Acupuncture is not a miracle cure, it usually takes time and persistence.

But I am filled with joy, gratitude, and sense of accomplishment from observing the milestones, both big and small that my patients achieve. It is well-worth the hard work that goes into this life-long practice.

he quality of our relationships determines the quality of our lives. This statement made

by Ester Perel is what we have built our careers around. What we have experienced over the last couple of years with Covid-19 is a perfect example of why we each need connection and how important the quality of our relationships is.

When one experiences repeated stressors or even trauma, it is possible that how they relate to others may change. What’s left unresolved from one’s history or even childhood often finds its way into the relationships one has in the present. As couple and family therapists, we spend our time supporting individuals and families in exploring these past experiences that have made them who they are now, allowing them to move forward and live a healthy lifestyle.

Over the last several years, there has been a slow shift into accepting that it is not only normal, but healthy to take care of our mental health. In fact, our mental health is so interconnected to our physical health that we must be thinking about and considering both. We are still seeing regularly, though many individuals are fearful of sharing with their loved ones that they have reached out to a therapist for support. This stigma has created a toxic garden where fear, shame, and silence have grown. This garden needs to be uprooted and replanted with seeds of understanding, vulnerability, and empathy.

We want to help break down the stigma around support and ask you to join us.

s Nick Maiorana, father of Zachary, born with Cystic Fibrosis, shared his journey, it became clear that this special little boy’s story needed to be highlighted.

This story and the work Nick and some other community members are doing for the good of so many living with this rare condition is beyond admirable.

Recently, a few families in Bucks County banded together to form a nonprofit organization to raise money to help advance therapies and medications for those who live with Cystic Fibrosis.

What is Cystic Fibrosis?

Cystic Fibrosis is a progressive, genetic disease that causes lung infections and limits the ability to breathe over time. While it is rare, over 30,000 people are living with Cystic Fibrosis in the United States and 70,000 throughout the World. It causes difficulty with water passing through cells, so patients may lose lung function, could need a lung transplant at some point in their lives, develop diabetes, in addition to a myriad of other physical complications.

Zach’s parents were informed of Zachary’s diagnosis when he was just a few days old and initially struggled as they adjusted to his treatments, medications, and assimilating those into their already busy lives. This disease is unforgiving and there are no days off.

Eventually they acclimated to their new normal and focused on advocating for their son through fundraising and meeting with legislators on public policy to assist those most vulnerable. They knew they had a long road ahead of them, fortunately life expectancy for those living with Cystic Fibrosis has risen from just 12 years old to 50+ over the past 40 years, thanks to grassroots fundraising efforts in collaboration with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation which advanced medications and therapies.

Currently, Zach is eight years old and does 20 minutes of chest physiotherapy in the morning and evening with medication

before every meal to aid in the digestion and absorption of nutrients in his food. He also enjoys activities like creating YouTube Videos, gaming & Roblox, is active in camps, loves his two cats Callie and Malachi, and recently ran a lemonade stand to raise money to donate to a local cat shelter.

Just as he enjoys the activities of a typical busy eight-year-old, he is optimistic about his future and having his own children someday.

He is truly an inspiration.

What is the Bucks County Cystic Fibrosis Alliance?

An opportunity to start the Bucks County Cystic Fibrosis Alliance presented itself when Anna Payne approached Nick, Zachary’s father, to help her do something big for Cystic Fibrosis in 2020.

Anna is a 35-year-old female who has battled Cystic Fibrosis her entire life and recently developed stage 4 colon cancer.

Nick has been an advocate for a long time and knew it would help Anna, his son, and so many others, so he was happy to help.

Together with Amy Dillon and Robyn and Eric Cordes, they formed a new nonprofit organization, the BC Cystic Fibrosis Alliance.

Nick describes their mission as “a collaboration of caregivers and patients with Cystic Fibrosis living in Bucks County, Pennsylvania to foster and promote the medical and social needs of Cystic Fibrosis Patients and their caregivers by accumulating and dispersing financial resources through charitable endeavors.”

What the Fall of Roe Means in Bucks and PA

n Friday, June 24th, it was confirmed: the Supreme Court ruled 6-3 to overturn Roe v.

Wade, the precedent that had been laid almost fifty years ago, ending the federal constitutional right to an abortion, and leaving that decision-making power with state governments. Thirteen states already had “trigger laws” in place, which means that with the fall of Roe, abortion immediately became illegal, or banned after 6 weeks. So far, an additional 13 states have signaled that they will move to ban abortion, or have pre-existing laws that ban abortion.

In Pennsylvania, abortion is still legal and safe up to 24 weeks of pregnancy, both for Pennsylvania residents and for women from out-of-state seeking an abortion. On July 12th, Governor Wolf signed Executive Order 2022-01, immediately ensuring that out-of-state residents may enter Pennsylvania to access reproductive health care services, including abortion, without being issued a warrant for arrest or being surrendered to their home state.

However, legislation is quickly being advanced to restrict abortion in Pennsylvania. Late Thursday night, July 7th, with little prior public awareness, the Republican-controlled Senate voted 28-22 to send a proposed amendment package to the House of Representatives that would amend the Pennsylvania Constitution to state that it does not guarantee any rights to abortion or public funding for abortions. This proposal, Senate Bill 106, was then approved by the Pennsylvania House of Representatives on Friday, July 8th, 107-92, after more than four hours of debate.

Voters ultimately have the final say on constitutional amendments’ approval via questions on the ballot. Any constitutional amendment must pass the Legislature in two consecutive sessions and be publicly advertised before reaching voters. The proposed SB 106 amendment would need to pass again during the next legislative session, which could be as early as January 2023, before it could appear on the 2023 primary election ballot. If passed, SB 106 could not be vetoed by the Governor. While this proposed amendment is not law yet, it is an opening to a complete abortion ban in the Commonwealth, including for victims of rape or incest or people with life-threatening pregnancies.

Current Pennsylvania state law bans abortions after 23 weeks, 6 days, although most providers stop offering abortions earlier in pregnancy. For an abortion past 23 weeks, 6 days, a pregnant person would need to travel out-of-state, as abortion is only permitted past this time frame for strict exceptions, including to save the pregnant person’s life and to prevent serious risk to the pregnant person’s physical health. It must be noted that while abortion is legal up to 23 weeks, 6 days in Pennsylvania, over 90% of abortions in the state and nationwide occur during the first trimester of pregnancy.

Only 1% of abortions are performed after 20 weeks, and those are almost exclusively due to fetal abnormalities that are not consistent with life, or to save the life of the mother. More than half of women who get abortions report using contraception. CDC data shows that 60% of women who get abortions are already mothers. 75% of women who get abortions live at or below the federal poverty level.

Most startling is the fact that approximately 1 in 4 women will have an abortion in their lifetime, which means most people probably know someone who has had one.

The reasons that women may choose abortion

vary greatly, from financial to personal, to safety, to ability to work, access education, or provide for themselves or their dependents. This is not a decision made lightly, and for most women, it’s one of the most challenging choices they will ever have to make.

Samantha Bobila, the Chief External Affairs Officer at Planned Parenthood Keystone, which has 8 health centers covering 37 counties in PA, expanded on this.

Of reasons women come to the Warminster Medical Center, Planned Parenthood Keystone’s headquarters, she said: “I wish there was a simple answer [to why women choose abortion] but there’s not. People come to us for abortion for many reasons, all of which are valid. What I can tell you is the majority of the patients are in their 20’s and may already be mothers. Our job is to provide patients all of their options and all information and uphold their decision.”

The most reliable way to find a provider for abortion is abortionfinder.org, the most comprehensive directory of verified abortion service providers in the country. In Doylestown and middle Bucks County, women can obtain the abortion pill up to 11 weeks through telehealth or in-clinic, although Pennsylvania state law mandates a 24-hour waiting period following initial counseling of all pregnancy options. Parental consent for age 17 or younger is also required.

The closest provider of procedural abortions is the Planned Parenthood Keystone’s Warminster Medical Center, where in-clinic abortions can be performed up to 13 weeks, 6 days, including for women without insurance. After 13 weeks 6 days, patients seeking in-clinic abortion are referred out to other providers because of bureaucratic issues and liability. The Warminster clinic, which is open 5 days a week, currently serves about 1,800 patients a year and provides about 720 abortions per year on-site.

Both Planned Parenthood Keystone’s Doylestown and Quakertown locations have closed their doors due to funding. Bobila stated that these clinics closed since most patients were going to the Warminster or Allentown locations to access services. The organization needed to prepare and allocate resources to where patients currently have a need, as well as anticipate the needs of women in a post-Roe world. Bobila noted that within a year of Roe falling, about 8,500 patients are expected to come from outof-state to access abortion services in Pennsylvania.

She stated that Planned Parenthood Keystone is already working with affiliates in other states to see where they can help and do what they can to make sure that patients can access the health care that they need. Pennsylvania centers have already served patients from Ohio and have served a patient from Texas since Roe was overturned. Bobila recalled a particularly impactful interaction with a woman from Ohio, who contacted her through the media line for Planned Parenthood, shortly after Roe fell, saying desperately, “Don’t hang up. I need to know if I will still be able to get an abortion.”

Bobila, who began working with Planned Parenthood in April 2020 after previous experience in the non-profit sector, and after being a patient at

Planned Parenthood in her 20’s herself, discussed the post-Roe world we now live in and how it will impact individual women and our larger society as a whole. “We know that abortion bans and restrictions specifically harm women of color, who already have higher maternal mortality rates. This will also cause irreparable harm to people of lower socioeconomic class and people in the LGBTQ+ community who cannot always access healthcare. I fully believe that in a few years, we will see poor outcomes in communities where abortion is banned, we will see pregnant women jailed for attempting to seek abortion, and see more people die because of pregnancy.”

Bobila stressed that abortion bans and restrictions don’t lead to less abortions, they just lead to unsafe abortions. However, Bobila also shared several proactive measures that people who disagree with the ruling can take, especially in a time when many feel helpless.

1) Donate to an abortion fund - This can pay for actual abortion care or travel expenses for those seeking abortion. The National Network of Abortion Funds, accessed via abortionfunds.org, or the Abortion Liberation Fund of PA, are some of many options.

2) Share personal abortion stories - This is a huge step people can take, as the more stories are shared, the more the stigma around abortion can be combatted.

3) Sign up as a patient escort - These patient escorts provide support to patients walking in and out of clinics and are the first line of defense for patients against anti-abortion protestors, who Bobila estimates are outside of the Warminster clinic about 2 days a week. Protestors will shout at patients trying to enter the center and have even gone so far as to write down license plate numbers of patients or will attempt to get personal information from them.

Bobila noted that “nobody should have to face harassment when trying to access healthcare, which is what abortion is.”

4) Hold your legislators accountable - The passage of SB 106 was done, as Bobila says, “under the cover of darkness,” as it happened late at night and many people did not even know about it. More than half of the voters in Pennsylvania believe abortion should be legal in all or most circumstances, and four out of five believe abortion care should be legal in at least some situations. People should get comfortable asking hard questions of their legislators.

5) Have difficult conversations with friends, neighbors, and family regarding abortion - Whatever a person’s personal beliefs are about abortion, Bobila stated that Planned Parenthood Keystone recommends approaching conversations from an empathetic framework. She noted how important it is to stress that everyone’s circumstances are different, and to emphasize the personal bodily autonomy of a person seeking an abortion.

The overturning of Roe has unleashed a huge number of consequences that our nation is seeing immediately and will see years later. For now, the most important thing that Pennsylvanians should know is that “abortion is still legal in Pennsylvania, and Planned Parenthood Keystone is there for patients no matter where they’re from.”

Pine2Pink launched in 2018 and has raised over $250,000 helping more than 1,000 local breast cancer patients.

The month-long program is designed to raise money that stays local and helps locals in treatment and recovery across Bucks County. Pine2Pink beneficiaries are Fox Chase Cancer Center of Buckingham, Grand View Hospital, Doylestown Hospital and Kin Wellness and Support Center.

The Foundation is recognized for its innovative month-long program that changes hundreds of lights to pink, conducts a month-long “augmented reality” driven local retail scavenger hunt, curates local retail based special ‘Pink’ offers, changes Pine Street to Pink Street, and hosts a variety of other events. Pine2Pink can be experienced in New Hope, Carversville, Peddler’s Village, Newtown, Perkasie, Doylestown and The Shops at Valley Square.

or the past 12 months, Foundations Community Partnership (FCP) celebrated 15 years of supporting the behavioral health and human service needs of children, young adults, and families in Bucks County. Since July 20, 2007, FCP invested more than $6.5 million in non-profit organizations serving our community through grants, high school scholarships, service-learning internships for college students, and education programs.

While being mindful of the ongoing global health crisis, we still managed to mark this occasion with several events and activities, including launching a new web site to improve functionality and better showcase our amazing non-profit partners, releasing a special anniversary edition of our annual report, and awarding 15 Partnership in Youth Services Grants. But the cherry on top was seeing our non-profit friends, community stakeholders, donors, and friends, return to Doylestown Country Club for our Partnership YeS Luncheon on April 12. We had a wonderful time celebrating the resiliency and accomplishments of Bucks County’s non-profit community and recognizing our grant and award recipients.

FCP traces its roots to the Delaware Valley Mental Health Foundation which founded a small psychiatric hospital in Doylestown in 1964. By 1996, the hospital became known as Foundations Behavioral Health and its scope expanded to encompass

a full range of behavioral health services for children and adolescents. In 2007, a forprofit organization acquired the hospital.

As a result of the sale, FCP was established to continue the grantmaking, community education, internship, and scholarship activities of the hospital.

Reflecting on FCP’s long and proud history, our vision to be a catalyst for improving the quality of life in Bucks County remains.

We excitedly look toward the future, poised to engage with our community partners and introduce more opportunities to strengthen the local non-profit sector. We believe that when nonprofits join forces, we are better able to address community needs and ensure that Bucks County is a vibrant and viable place to live and work. My 3 best travel tips are…

1. Put air tags in your luggage so you can track them in real time. So, when the airline loses them, you can tell them exactly where they are.

2. Use your frequent flyer miles. They lose value over time, so use them now, and also when you use them, they give you added flexibility.

3. Book flights on travel credit cards like Chase Sapphire and AmEx Platinum that give trip delay and interruption coverage, these days with so many delays and cancellations, your credit card with help reimburse you if anything goes wrong.

The must have item I always bring traveling is… My Apple Air pods max noise cancelling head phones (Bose QC38 are also great).

Screaming babies and annoying seat mates are just a factor of travel, so bringing your own form of noise cancelling headphones is a must.

My dream trip (or place you haven’t visited yet that you really want to) is... A cruise to Antarctica, to kayak with whales.

The Carbon Ridge is…. A personal sanctuary, it’s my farm in Solebury where I ride horses.

I have goats, llamas, chickens, and by the time this article prints, probably another new animal because, like someone once told me, having horses and animals is like having potato chips, you can’t just have one.

This passion (for horses/rescuing animals) came from… In college, at the University of Pittsburgh, I volunteered at the animal rescue league, and realized that just being around animals brings my stress down and I also realized that so many animals are neglected, and even just volunteering to go walking dogs, and often the ones that people think are the meanest are the sweetest. Like Pitbull mixes, who are truly just the most soulful dogs out there.

I tell people who are traveling to Bucks County to make sure to visit… The Delaware River, kayaking is one of my favorite things to do in the world, especially now with so many bald eagles it’s just an absolutely spectacular experience, the rivers clean and the bald eagles are simply majestic.

My favorite places to go in Doylestown are... I would say… OOKA sushi bar.

If planning an upcoming trip... allow ample time at the airport, especially if you have a connection; avoid checking a bag, but if you must, use an AirTag to track it; and consider going to off the beaten path destinations and airports to avoid high levels of chaos.”

Sikiru Adepoju - The Beat of His Drum

First off it’s an honor to be interviewing such an accomplished musician as yourself, thanks for taking the time to talk to The Cardinal. Can you tell us how did you wind up playing in the states being that you are originally from Nigeria?

I was performing with Orlando Julius Eckemode in a band called The Nigerian All Stars and we travelled to Oakland to do some shows back in 1985. When I was in Oakland, I met a woman dancer from the opening act who knew Baba Olatunji, and she spoke to him about using me on a studio project called Beat Of My Drum. The rest is history.

I understand that you have a close relationship with Mickey Hart of The Grateful Dead, how did you meet him?

It was actually at Fantasy Studios recording with Baba Olatunji that I met Mickey and we recorded Invocation, an amazing collaboration of world drumming. This is where my journey began with Mickey Hart and now, I am one of the three “Rhythm Devil’s” of The Dead and Company, rarified air for a drummer to be mentioned in the same breath as Bill Kreutzman and Mickey Hart.

What musical projects are you currently working on?

My band mates and I in Riddim Doctors (with special guests Jay Lane of Primus and Ratdog and Jeff Chimenti of Dead and Company) just released our newest album OPE(gratitude), we are all super excited for everyone to hear it! The CD is available online if you would like to check it out.

You have a couple of local performances in August where people can come check you out, can you tell us a bit about your upcoming shows?

My good friend Richie Nagan brought me to the East Coast for a host of shows with Jenn Durkin up in Connecticut. I am following that up playing a few shows with Lovelight an amazing Grateful Dead tribute band including a special last performance here in Bucks County on August 12th at the Ukrainian Rugby Club on Lower State Rd in Horsham.

This special musical performance is open to the public and in dedication to King Nick Mannino.

he Call for Art has been issued for the prestigious 93rd Juried Art Show at Phillips’ Mill, the area’s historic art exhibition. From August 1 through August 31, artists from within a 25-mile radius of the landmark mill are invited and encouraged to submit their work to be juried by an all-new group of esteemed judges.

Serving as jurors of Painting and Graphics this year are Lauren Whearty, Peter Van Dyck and Douglas Martenson.

Sculptors Syd Carpenter and Margherita Hagan will jury the Sculpture and Portfolio categories.

The Phillips’ Mill Art Committee prides itself on inviting a new panel of jurors each year, assuring that each exhibition has its own unique personality. The jurors, always from beyond the 25-mile radius, are accomplished artists all, distinguished in their fields, and diverse in their interests. Sometime they are also curators, art historians and bring an academic background. Always, they work together to select from the hundreds of submissions received each year.

The Art Show Committee is also excited to announce that jurying will take place in person at the Mill this year. This has been a long-time tradition at Phillips’ Mill, interrupted the past two years by the Covid pandemic. “Having the jurors on site to see the submitted works in person, to view

buried secret and a community determined to keep it that way, a catastrophic event twists, breaks, and reshapes every facet of their lives, a mysterious stranger appears who seems to know them better than they know themselves. This is the story of “Alien8”, an original musical that will be performed

by The Playhouse Youth Company at Bucks County Playhouse beginning Thursday, August 4 through Saturday, August 6.

Performances will be held each day at 11:00 am and 7:00 pm.

Written by Kate Brennan and David Lee White, directed and choreographed

by Kara Jönsson, with musical direction by Kyle Duke, “Alien8” is a new contemporary musical written in the style of “Dear Evan Hansen,” “Be More Chill,” and “Heathers.”

It tells the story of a wounded town reckoning with their shame and finding connection through forgiveness.

Featuring a beautiful contemporary score performed by the Youth Company Orchestra and a diverse cast of characters, “Alien8” challenges us to think deeply about who we really are, who we want to be, and how to reconcile differences between our present and future selves. “Alien8” was developed with and written for teenagers, and speaks to intergenerational views of gender, identity, and inclusion within an anthem of belonging, love, and acceptance.

“We’re honored that the Playhouse Youth Company gets to perform the regional premiere of ‘Alien8,’” says Michaela Murphy, Bucks County Playhouse Director of Education. “Our students connected with the material immediately and it is exhilarating to see the show resonate with them so deeply. For all of us on the creative team, it has been a joy to work with these incredible young people. This timely musical reminds us that miracles that can happen when we radically accept the differences of those we love.”

consisting of 17 local performers ages 1318 who are selected by audition for this conservatory-style training program. Youth Company participants this year represent 14 different high schools and middle schools in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. arts • music Bedminster Traditional Artisan Show Set for August 27-28

A

small but skillful group of craftspeople dedicated to preserving the artistic skills of early America will show the fruits of their labors Aug. 27-28 at the Bedminster Traditional Artisan Show, slated for Delaware Valley University in Doylestown.

More than 30 invited artisans from all over the eastern and mid-western United States are scheduled to attend the show, exhibiting handcrafted furniture, paintings, textiles, carving, pottery, metal work and other treasures, all created using a traditional sensibility and time-honored techniques.

“All the artisans are doing their work primarily by hand,” said Justin Kauffman, president of the three-person committee which is producing the show this year.

“I think people will be impressed with the range of work. It’s a small show that allows us to really put on display the art and craft of the best artisans working in their field.”

The show dates from a small exhibit staged by Leonard Marschark, a maker of 18th-century-style clocks, and his wife Eve, who created replicas of 19thcentury “schoolgirl art” paintings, said Kauffman. The Marscharks invited some fellow craftspeople to show their work at their Bedminster Township home, starting about 17 years ago. After a few successful years, they moved the show to Bucks County Vocational Technical School, then to Delaware Valley University.

“They kept the name because that’s how people knew it,” said Kauffman, who is himself a maker of fine colonialstyle furniture. Along with Bill Rosier, who manages the show’s online presence, and graphic designer and traditional sign-maker Jackson Foster, he has invited new artists and managed the logistics of what he calls “the only indoor show that focuses primarily on traditional American art and craft.”

Traditional crafts – the making of fine functional or decorative objects, such as were made in America from the late 1700s to the early 1800s – maintain a relevance in the contemporary world, said Kauffman. “I think people will always be drawn to period art and craft because it has a timeless design, because they value the historical precedent and they value craftsmanship,” he said. The show will be a treasure-trove for those people wishing to authentically furnish a historic home, he said.

Previous show-goers will see some new faces at this year’s edition. Among the new exhibits are: • Handwoven textiles by Susan Withnel • Redware pottery by Erich and Janice Steinhagen of Steinhagen Pottery • Tatted lace by Elaine O’Donel • A variety of folk art by Valerie Skinner • Period handmade candles and soaps by Jenny Slover The craftspeople will be available throughout the show to discuss their work, and a few will also be demonstrating their creative process, said Kauffman. The exhibitors are “a very friendly crowd. Any artist will be eager to explain what they do,” he said.

Questions about the materials, process and history of the various crafts are encouraged.

Hours for the show, which takes place at the university’s Moumgis Auditorium, are 10-5 on Saturday, and 10-3 on Sunday. Admission is $8, with a discount card available at www. tradtionalartisanshow.com.

Parking is free, the auditorium is handicapaccessible, and no pets are permitted inside the auditorium.

I am a local hand lettering artist. I specialize in hand lettered doormats, cards, prints, and more! I combine my love of typography and art to create one of a kind products.

Tell us about yourself. When did your journey with art begin?

My journey with art started as a child. I always loved pottery, drawing and painting.

I continued drawing and painting into my adult years. Like many others during the pandemic, I began looking for new outlets

to pass the time and started calligraphy. It wasn’t long after I started calligraphy that I began lettering on different mediums and “Lettering By Tracy” was born!

Tell us about your art. What is your creative process like?

My art centers around my handwriting, which is really cool if you think about it. I elaborate and manipulate my handwriting to make new designs and fonts. In doing this, I add a fun unique spin to the products that I paint which truly makes them one of a kind. Custom doormats are my most popular item with calligraphy prints a close second. I also have a line of greeting cards with unique sayings for any occasion.

How do you like being a local artist in Doylestown?

I love being a local artist in Doylestown.

The network of small businesses and the community around Doylestown have been very welcoming and supportive. Many people reach out to me on social media to say hi or to inquire about my doormats.

Who or what is a big inspiration for you?

As a creative person, I’m always looking for inspiration in the world around us.

In my business, I do exactly that. I have a blank slate on a wide variety of mediums such as wood, coir, acrylic, and cardstock.

I think about the intention of the piece that I want to create and let my hands do the rest.

rtistic Eyewear is co-owned by cousins Rob, Erica and Denise. They run their business, located at 10 South Main Street, like a fine-tuned machine. I love the feeling of warmth and positivity in their store, so I thought it would be nice to get to know them a little bit better.

Q: What did you have for breakfast this morning?

A: Oatmeal.

A: Anything fried. Also, pizza.

A: I was a national champion in college for rugby.

A: I can’t post that because if my mother sees it, I’m in trouble.

A: I love thrift shops.

A: I am very proud of my son Noah. He just completed his first year at Temple Law School. Also, we have matching tattoos of a sunflower.

Recently, a family visiting D-Town needed their pair of eyeglasses fixed. Upon entering the store, the daughter stopped in her tracks and stared at the wall of photos in utter disbelief: “That’s ME!” The girl then explained that she had done a Tumblr video on how to cut your bangs at least ten years earlier! Such a random thing to happen!

I reached out to Midge Belickis, the woman in this photograph. Here’s what she told me: “I was standing in the store for a good 10 minutes before I noticed my photo because me and my mom were distracted trying on sunglasses. It was a trip for sure!

I used to have a style blog back when those were very in vogue as a hobby, and the photo in the shop is from that. It was wild to see me in my twee Zooey Deschanel-era blown up on a wall in a store. I couldn’t stop laughing. The shop keeper was so sweet, and she let me pick out a pair of sunglasses for free. It was a wild experience! I held the door for people walking in as I left and said, ‘my photo’s in there’ to them and they gave me a look like I was nuts.”

I loved talking to Rob, Erica and Denise.

They’re funny and quite lovable. As a customer, I can tell you that their selection of eyewear is beautiful. A lot of it is handmade in Italy and Paris. Their customer service is also amazing. I currently own two pairs of glasses from this sweet little family-owned shop.

Keep Pets Safe All Summer Long: 4 Tips to Overcome Warm Weather Hazards

S

ummer means extra time outdoors. Sunny months provide a perfect opportunity for bonding with pets, but higher temperatures, seasonal plants and pests and additional travel can pose higher risks for complications.

To help keep dogs, cats and other pets safe during summer adventures, consider these tips from the experts at VCA Animal Hospitals, which has more than 1,000 locations across North America that cared for more than 4.5 million pets last year.

Beat the Heat Dogs and cats cannot control their body temperature by sweating as humans do. They have a small number of sweat glands located in their footpads and primarily regulate their temperature by panting. Vigorous exercise, leaving a pet in a vehicle with poor ventilation - even if the windows are down - or being left outside without shade and water on hot days can lead to heatstroke, or hyperthermia.

Increased humidity combined with warmer temperatures intensifies the risk of heat stroke, especially during the first few warm days as pets transition to outdoor activity. If your pet exhibits any symptoms of heatstroke - elevated breathing rates, dry or sticky gums, lethargy, disorientation, abnormal gum color, bruised gums or seizures - pour cool water over your pet’s head, stomach and feet or apply cool, wet cloths, ensure continuous airflow and see a veterinarian immediately.

Keep Ticks at Bay As pets spend more time outdoors in the summer, they’re often exposed to pests like ticks. Ticks can transmit serious diseases to both dogs and cats. According to the Companion Animal Parasite Council, as many as 1 in 20 dogs tested positive

for tick-borne diseases in 2021. Ticks climb onto pets from blades of grass or fall from overhanging trees and foliage. If a tick finds its way onto your pet, use tweezers or disposable gloves to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible then pull straight out with steady, even pressure until the tick releases.

If you find a tick, carefully inspect all areas of skin, including behind the ears and between the toes, for additional ticks. After removing the tick, thoroughly clean the bite area with soap and water and wash your hands. Save the tick in a resealable plastic bag to show your veterinarian and take note of the time and place the bite occurred and any other details that may aid your veterinarian should an illness occur. Follow your veterinarian’s advice about tick preventative measures, and make sure the product is safe to be used for your pet’s size. Never use dog flea and tick products on cats.

Travel Safely If you plan to travel with your pet, pack the necessities for your animal. Your pet’s luggage should include food, water bowls, treats, a leash and collar, toys, medications and printed copies of medical records, including vaccination history. Check with your veterinarian to determine if a health certificate is needed for travel. Also ensure your pet is comfortable with his or her crate or carrier before flying or embarking on a long road trip.

Knowing where to take your pet in case of an emergency while away from home is also essential. Look up emergency veterinary clinics near your destination before departing or ask if your vet offers virtual care options. For example, through the myVCA app, you can access 24/7 live chat with licensed veterinary professionals.

Manage Allergies Many of the same allergens that affect humans impact pets.

Atopy, also known as inhalant allergy, is a common cause of skin problems in dogs and cats. Affected animals often have a history of chronic or recurrent itching and tend to have a history of repeated skin or ear infections. Itchy pets tend to scratch themselves, lick their feet and rub on furniture or carpet. Atopy can also cause cats to groom excessively and develop bald or crusty spots on their skin.

Some allergies may also affect the respiratory or digestive systems or the eyes. If your pet is displaying signs of allergies, your veterinarian can recommend appropriate testing and treatment to reduce symptoms.

​ ucks County Approves Purchase B Of ‘Workforce On Wheels’

The county’s Workforce and Economic Development Department will be taking its CareerLink programs and services on the road in the very near future.

On July 6, the Bucks County Commissioners voted unanimously to purchase a “Workforce On Wheels” unit at a cost of $391,000 from Farber Specialty Vehicles in Ohio. The county will be using part of its $121 million in American Recovery Plan money to fund the purchase.

When it’s ready to roll, the mobile “Workforce On Wheels” will be bringing all the services also being offered at its brick and mortar PACareerLink and workforce locations in Perkasie and Bristol to the rest of the county.

“If you have driven through the county you know it’s a long haul to either one of those sites. We’re looking forward to bringing our mobile unit to individuals in the community,” said Dianna Kralle, assistant director of workforce development in Bucks County. “This will allow us to do workshops, including registration on the state job search site, interview workshops and resume writing.

“Everything we do in our regular CareerLink will be scaled down in a mobile unit and brought to schools, libraries and community events,” said Kralle. “’Anywhere we are invited to go we hope to be there.”

The custom-built RV will come equipped with Wi-Fi and computers and will include a small meeting room area and about a dozen seats for participants to use. It will also be manned by staff knowledgeable about career training programs, career and training assessments, employment opportunities, training and education options.

$9M Recreation Center Project Gets Million-Dollar Boost

In a few short years, Doylestown Township residents will have a new place to work out, throw parties and attend cooking classes at a new community recreation center funded in part with state grant money.

The township is in the planning stages of building the center - a project anticipated to cost nearly $9 million. The state’s Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program awarded $1 million to the project last month.

According to PA.GOV, RACP is a state grant program administered by the Office of the Budget for the acquisition and construction of regional economic, cultural, civic, recreational and historical improvement projects.

constructing an indoor multi-use center and gym and indoor classroom.

Doylestown Township Supervisor Barbara Lyons said the community recreation center will also include kitchens to serve cooking classes and large-scale family events. Baby showers, bridal showers and birthday parties are all envisioned to take place in the building’s rental rooms.

“The idea of the multipurpose room is to have the ability to have versatility in the programming because we’re going to be serving young people to folks in their retiring years. There will be room for all kinds of community events,” said Lyons.

The center is set to open in the spring of 2024 and Lyons described the project as a “big endeavor.” She said changes will be made to the existing campus including moving basketball and tennis courts as well as creating a pickleball court.

“This grant award of $1 million is huge for us. It’s been over the years that we’ve further defined what would be the best approach to providing the best space for what programs we provide now, have provided over the years and also expanding our programming to new opportunities,” said Lyons. S Township Manager Stephanie Mason also spoke with enthusiasm about the project.

“We anticipate being able to go to bid at the end of this year or the beginning of 2023. So it was timely to receive the grant and we’re very excited about it. We are very appreciative of our state legislators for their assistance,” said Mason.

Lyons said the township is also seeking funding for the project from other sources including active capital campaign fundraising.

State Sen. Steve Santarsiero, D-10 of Lower Makefield, announced the $1 million award to Doylestown, which is in his district, last month.

hether your child is a newborn or is heading toward high school graduation, a 529 savings plan may help you put aside funds to pay for college expenses without paying federal taxes on dividends and gains. However, 529 plans have some specific rules, regulations, and restrictions that parents must know before their kids are off to college. Here are the answers to some of the most commonly-asked questions about 529 college savings plans.

What Are Qualified Expenses?

Generally, 529 funds are tax-free when spent on qualified expenses, such as tuition, books, fees, and room and board. However, understanding what constitutes an eligible expense is sometimes challenging.

Here are some things to know about qualified expenses.

• Books, supplies, and equipment qualify.

However, laptops and other tech devices only qualify if required for enrollment or attendance at a school.

• Airfare or driving expenses to and from college are not qualified expenses.

• Health insurance is not a qualified expense.

• Room and board, including offcampus housing, is a qualified expense.

However, it is capped at the room and board amount your college estimates in its total cost of attendance. This rule means that if a college publishes its cost of attendance as including $10,000 in room and board, but your child has an off-campus apartment that costs $2,000 per month, you may only be able to use your 529 withdrawal to pay for $10,000 of your student’s rent.

What Happens if Your Child Gets a Scholarship?

Getting a full-tuition scholarship is great news, but may create a challenge for the

529 plans. You may need to change what to do with the 529 funds earmarked to pay for college tuition. Fortunately, several options allow a 529 custodian to avoid paying penalty fees on the 529 funds.

• Withdrawal of the scholarship amount from the 529 account is penalty-free but not tax-free.

• The 529 funds may pay for the student’s postgraduate education.

• The 529 funds may pay for qualified expenses of grandchildren, other children, or other family members. The beneficiaries of a 529 account may change at any time. As long as the withdrawn funds pay for qualified expenses, they remain tax-free.

When Should Funds Be Withdrawn?

It is important to note that any 529 withdrawals must pay for qualified expenses incurred in the same year. Taking out funds on Dec. 20 and spending them on Jan. 2 might result in a penalty, even if the payment is qualified. Schedule withdrawals carefully to avoid problems and ensure that you spend the money on a qualified expense during the calendar year you make each withdrawal.

Another strategy worth considering is that 529 accounts held by grandparents are not a parental asset. In that case, funds withdrawn counts as the student’s income.

This distinction means that waiting until the last couple of years of college to use the grandparent’s 529 funds may help the expected family contribution remain lower during the first few years of college.

nce your home is listed, the ticking clock starts. We’ve all heard the case of the overpriced home that sits on the market for months on end, undergoing price drop after price drop. Like most things, over time, the excitement and appeal wear off.

The longer it sits, the less likely it is to sell in the seller’s favor- or at all. Buyers may start wondering if there are some serious flaws. Perhaps there is something wrong with the neighborhood, or they conclude that the seller is too stubborn to negotiate.

This situation applies to listings with a real estate agent or for sale by owner.

Buyers can easily access resources online to pull comparables and get an idea of price. An overpriced home will most likely lead buyers to pass. The more buyers that pass, the less traffic is driven to the property, and the lower demand for the home there is. This quickly reduces the value the home holds on the open market.

Beyond the impact overpricing has on a home’s attractiveness to buyers, the real issue that comes into play is the appraisal.

It is a key component of determining the listing price in today’s market. Many offers now contain a contingency that addresses appraisal gap coverage.

The appraisal gap is the difference between the sale price of a home and the appraised value, and the coverage is the amount of money required to mend the gap. The valuation from an appraisal tends to be black and white. They are based on square footage, the number of bedrooms and bathrooms, lot size, etc. Appraisers consider the property’s condition; however, the condition does not hold nearly the same weight as the amount of livable space.

In today’s market, most homes are

frequently priced above the appraised value. As long as the buyer is willing to pay the difference between the sale price and the appraised price, the transaction will close smoothly.

For most buyers, the issue is that mortgage lenders will not cover the gap. In an instance where the home is priced well over the appraised value, the transaction has a good chance of hitting a brick wall and falling apart at the closing table.

For example, a home may go under contract for $800,000 but then receive an appraised value of $700,000. Unless the buyer has the $100,000 cash to cover the difference or the seller agrees to a different sale price, the bank does not approve the loan, and the deal falls through.

Market comparables will be contributors to the appraisal value—these guide where your home should be priced and where the appraised value may land.

A realtor who agrees to list your home for whatever price you wish regardless of comparables is not acting in your best interest as a seller. Any potential sale would risk 11th-hour failure due to the appraisal gap.

Nothing is more important than paying attention to the market value and adjusting accordingly. Top dollar should always be the goal, but know the difference between an exaggeration and an actuality. Stick to the facts. We’d all love to sell our homes for an unrealistic number, but at the end of the day, what matters most is what the house actually sells for and that it ultimately sells.
