MY DOWNTOWN WITH GENE FELLS

York City Police Department

Community Resource Assistant, Downtown Team

What do you love most about working at the Downtown Resource Center?

The location of the office, in the heart of Downtown York, is perfect for our business owners, market vendors, downtown residents, and visitors to stop in. I enjoy stopping in the shops, walking through the markets, and engaging with people. It reminds me of my foot patrol days with the York City Police and being assigned to the Square and doing business checks.

What does “Downtown York” mean to you personally and professionally?

I do a lot of shopping downtown, and many of these folks have become good friends of mine. I like to see these businesses succeed because, in the long run, it benefits me. As a part of the team at the Downtown Resource Center, my feelings are the same, but with a goal: if the businesses are successful, it helps make the downtown safer for everyone, and attracts more businesses.

How has your work with the York City Police Department and the Downtown Resource Center shaped your perspective on the community?

With this new role, I get to see more of how things work. There is a lot of growth happening. I meet with Officer Kathy Nice almost daily, sharing information and concerns of focus, or incidents that need follow-up. There are a lot of good people working to keep Downtown York moving forward.

Q

What’s one of your favorite memories or experiences from working downtown?

I’m still new in the Community Resource Assistant role, but it has been rewarding assisting people. I had an older couple who were visiting the downtown area and got lost and separated. The wife made her way to the office, and I was able to direct the husband there by phone. Also, there was a gentleman who stopped in the office with questions about setting up a food stand in the Central Market. We helped connect him to the right folks, and now his stand is open and doing well.

Q

What advice would you give to someone looking to get more involved in keeping downtown vibrant and safe?

Firstly, come downtown and look around – there is something interesting for everyone. Stay current on things happening through Downtown Inc’s website. You're always welcome to stop in at the Downtown Resource Center. The more you know about Downtown York, the more comfortable you will be.

Q

When you're off duty, where do you like to spend time downtown? Any favorite spots, events, or hidden gems?

There isn’t too much about Downtown York that I don’t like. There are great restaurants with good food. I find walking through the Markets very therapeutic, and now I get to do that as part of my job. I love all the coffee shops. I also love catching a Revs baseball game with my son.

The Downtown Resource Center, winner of the Townie Award for Best Community Partnership from the Pennsylvania Downtown Center, is a one-stop hub connecting entrepreneurs, business owners, and community members with the tools, guidance, and partnerships they need to thrive. The center also serves as a hub for the York City Police Department’s downtown officer team. The center is located at 44 W. Philadelphia Street and is open every Monday from 12 to 4 pm.

Savor the Season

Experience the best of outdoor dining with a progressive dinner itinerary

Summer and dining outdoors go hand-inhand, especially in Historically Edgy Downtown York, where historic architecture, vibrant streetscapes, and local flavor come together in walkable districts just waiting to be explored.

Come along with us as we map out a progressive patio dinner—an immersive outdoor dining experience where every course is served in a different district, each just a few blocks stroll apart. Then be inspired to chart out one of your very own!

One

Start with a Sip at Tutoni’s TT Bar Market District | 108 N. George St.

Tutoni’s TT Bar is the perfect place to kick off your evening. Order their signature cocktail—the Purple Rain—a blend of Bols Genever, butterfly pea flower mint syrup, lime, and lavender, served in a glass that catches the sunset of Summer.

Two

Appetizer at Roosevelt Tavern

WeCo | 50 N. Penn St.

Cross the Creek into the WeCo District, where you’ll find the Roosevelt Tavern, one of the few spots in Downtown York with a true outdoor patio. Their standout appetizer? Devils on Horseback: bacon-wrapped Medjool dates, stuffed with blue cheese and finished with a balsamic reduction. Sweet, salty, savory—this starter is a patio favorite.

Three

Entrée at Levant Mediterranean Cuisine

Royal Square District | 101 S. Duke St.

Stroll to the arts scene of the Royal Square District to Levant Mediterranean Cuisine, where sidewalk seating offers views of passersby and the historic, recently renovated Laurel-Rex Fire Company. Go bold with the Musakhan oven-broiled chicken, red onion, and sumac layered over warm bread, garnished with fried almonds and parsley, served with a side of Mediterranean yogurt. Pair it with their house-made Royal Mint Lemonade, a cool, crisp counterpoint to the hearty main.

The Heart of the City Beats Stronger with Fitness Focus

Downtown York’s YMCA and YWCA offer yearround fitness, aquatics, and mindfulness for all ages

Summertime means more time spent outdoors in the sun and fresh air. But Downtown York is a year-round destination for fitness and wellness activities with several first-class facilities to get your heart pumping or calm your mind. In the heart of Downtown York, two institutions stand out as pillars of community wellness: the Arthur J. Glatfelter YMCA and the YWCA York. Both offer comprehensive fitness and wellness programs that cater to individuals of all ages and abilities.

ARTHUR J. GLATFELTER YMCA

Located in the WeCo District, the Arthur J. Glatfelter YMCA is a cornerstone of health and wellness in York. Celebrating 100 years at its Newberry St location, the facility boasts a range of amenities, including a fully equipped fitness center, indoor pool, gym, sauna, and whirlpool. Members can participate in various programs such as aquatics and health and well-being initiatives, as well as take part in art and culture programs designed for youth development. A few short blocks walk up Newberry St, past Farquhar Park, one will find the Graham Aquatics Center, which offers even more aquatic fun, including an outdoor pool with a waterslide, multiple water play structures, a beach-style entry, and food and drink concessions. York City residents can purchase discounted day and season passes for the outdoor pool, making it a local, affordable option for fun in the sun.

The YMCA’s aquatics program offers swim lessons, lifeguard training, and family swim times, promoting water safety and fitness. The indoor pool provides a space for lap swimming and aquatic exercise classes, accommodating swimmers of all levels.

YWCA YORK

Just on the other side of Downtown in York’s Downtown East Neighborhood, YWCA York is dedicated to enhancing wellness through a variety of programs. Their aquatics offerings include swim classes for all ages, aqua exercise classes, and the nationally competitive York Synchro Team. Unique classes like mermaid swims and paddleboard yoga add a creative twist to traditional aquatic fitness

In addition to aquatics, YWCA York provides yoga and mindfulness classes aimed at increasing balance, strength, and flexibility. These classes are also designed to help manage pain, stress, anxiety, and trauma, welcoming individuals and families alike. YWCA York also offers a fitness center equipped with a weight room, cardio room, sauna, and Pilates studio, providing a comprehensive environment for physical health.

Both the YMCA and YWCA York are committed to making wellness accessible to the community. They offer programs tailored to various age groups and fitness levels, ensuring that everyone can engage in healthy activities. From youth development programs to senior fitness classes, these institutions play a vital role in promoting health and well-being. No matter the weather, there is always an option to break a sweat or cool down and recenter in these fantastic, stateof-the-art facilities right here in Downtown York.

A Century of Growth & Civic Pride

Over 100 years of planting and placemaking with The Garden Club of York

Founded in 1922, The Garden Club of York was a charter member of the Garden Club Federation of Pennsylvania, an organization formed in 1930 to promote gardening and civic beautification efforts, facilitate garden and flower shows across the Commonwealth, and provide educational resources to youth. Since its founding, The Garden Club of York has grown into an organization with nearly 250 members that maintains nine gardens in the City of York and the surrounding area, annually sponsors 286 hanging baskets and 114 container planters across Downtown York, and contributes immensely to civic life in York.

During the Great Depression and the Second World War, the Garden Club of York was active in promoting gardening as a means to sustain families, and the club was a prominent supporter of victory gardens and other civil defense measures during the war. Today, the Garden Club of York

provides six scholarships to high school seniors and undergraduate students studying horticulture or other environmental-related fields. The club has also participated in the “Adopt a Block” program. Immediate Past President Jan Olsen reiterated a quote from her predecessor, Kim Keessee, as noted in a 2022 article in the York Daily Record, which said that, “The York Club has evolved from its origins as a tea party and white glove organization to a working-class club working in the community.”

“When I moved to York, I was looking for something to get involved in,” shares Jan. “After talking to some of the members, I felt the Garden Club of York was something I would enjoy. I found there were many ways to be involved, from digging in the dirt to learning how to arrange flowers. Being new to York, the Garden Club gave me an opportunity to make new friends and be involved in the community.”

In recent years, the Garden Club of York’s Youth Committee has made great strides in expanding the outreach and presence of the club in the community, and the club regularly participates in Earth Day, Arbor Day events, and other related events such as Go Green in the City and York County Envirothon. The Club has also revamped the Horticulture Center at the York State Fair, including the addition of an expanded educational display, organizing and judging the various horticulture competitions, creating new gardening-related activities for children, and volunteering throughout the Fair.

Throughout the year, the Garden Club’s Adventure Committee organizes trips to botanical gardens and estates, including a recent trip to Marjorie Merriweather Post’s Hillwood Estate in Washington, D.C., tours of the gardens of local members and nonmembers, and other activities.

"...The

Garden Club

of York represents a group of like-minded people, like myself, that share a love for gardening and floral design..."

Current President of The Garden Club of York

The Garden Club of York meets monthly at St. Matthew’s Lutheran Church and is open to members and their guests. Each meeting generally includes a speaker on a subject related to gardening or horticulture. Benefits of membership include recommendations for native plants and plantings to consider for one’s own garden, and floral and landscape design classes. Those interested in joining the Garden Club of York can find additional information on their website!

“For me, The Garden Club of York represents a group of like-minded people, like myself, that share a love for gardening and floral design,” stated Pam Paules, current President of The Garden Club of York. “It gives me an opportunity for continued learning, provides a creative outlet, and the chance to meet new people and cultivate friendships, while providing the opportunity to give back to the York Community.”

Collusion Tap Works: Where Summer Days Are Brewed Just Right

Discover the brewery’s seasonal upgrades, events, and new flavors

From sunny afternoons to laid-back evenings, Collusion Tap Works in Downtown York is the goto spot to enjoy what summer is all about. In 2024, the brewery received a BLOOM Grant to support their growth by adding additional seating and upgraded equipment.

Q: What makes Collusion Tap Works stand out from other local restaurants?

We want to give our customers an original selection of food and drinks, so we make sure to have something for everyone. Last year, we celebrated brewing 1,000 different beers in 8 years, so there’s always something new on one of the 24 taps in our York location. We also carry locally made cider, wine, spirits, and canned & draft cocktails.

When it comes to our food, we try to keep costs as low as possible for us, so we can keep prices low for customers, but still make a high-quality and delicious product.

Plus, we have a parking lot and plenty of outdoor seating, which we always knew was something we wanted. With Mural Park right beside us, it’s a nice place to be on a summer day.

We caught up with Jared Barnes, Head Brewer and Owner of Collusion Tap Works, to hear more about their spot in the Royal Square District and all they’re doing to have the good times flowing all summer long.

Q: What is it like being a business in Downtown York? How does the community play a role in success?

We’ve been fortunate to have the resources from Downtown Inc and our YCEA and Explore York memberships to get the word out about events and announcements. Last year’s BLOOM Grant Award helped us increase our seating capacity and upgrade some of our equipment. It’s also been fun to collaborate with all of the artists and other small businesses we have over here, like the Firefly Night Markets hosted by Creatives on King, or the Music for the Mammals fundraiser for Sam’s Beasties and MORE for Furry Friends.

Q: How does Collusion support the outdoor economy to help everyone have a fun-filled summer?

We just became a Trail-Friendly Business last year because of our proximity to the King St bike lane and the York County Heritage Rail Trail, which brings in a lot of customers after their hike or bike ride. We’ve also worked with outdoor-focused organizations like the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper and poured beer at their Give Local York Party earlier in May. I’m down at the river with our boat a few times a week in the summer; that’s my favorite thing to do in York.

Q: What else does Collusion have in store this summer?

We just released our summer menu with favorites from our Restaurant Week specials like the Hot Waffle Burger, old classics like the Reuben Fries, and new concepts like the Peruvian Steak Bowl.

There are a lot of events coming up too, like our weekly trivia nights on Tuesdays, monthly Poses & Pints and Paint & Sip events, and a lot more.

We’re also opening up our Downtown York taproom on Mondays to host private events, parties, meetings, gatherings, etc. More information and prices for the venue and catering are on our website.
