truly love this time of year, when the leaves start to change their colors, the nights get cooler and the Downtown Rescue Mission is at its busiest. The Fall Season is the time of year that the Mission is at its peak level of activity.

During the next few weeks we will be collecting both turkeys and side items for our annual Thanksgiving Food Drive. Almost 1,000 of these turkeys/sides will be given out at our annual Thanksgiving Food Box Give-aWay. These food boxes, which have enough food for a family of five, will be given out to needy families throughout the community on Monday and Tuesday of Thanksgiving week.

The rest of the turkeys will be used at our Great Thanksgiving Banquet. This year we are planning on serving over 1,000 Thanksgiving meals to men, women and children who come to the Mission looking for a hot meal.

The meals and food boxes that we give away help fill empty stomachs, but at the Mission we are truly hoping to fill their souls with the life-changing gospel of Jesus Christ. Reaching out and sharing Christ’s love with all who we come in contact with is our greatest ambition, whether it is in our chapel services, through our programs and services, in the cashier line at one of our thrift stores or even through a newsletter article we will share the gospel to a lost and dying world.

Every day at the Mission we are trying to live out the Great Commission where in Matthew 28:19-20 Jesus instructed us to, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

M

y name is Delora McIntire. My face may look familiar because I was in the May 2013 edition of Mission Moments, but that’s about the only thing that’s the same. What’s changed? To put it short – my heart and my mind. I thought if I could just think differently it would change my heart but that was backwards. My heart had to be changed by God and the truth of His Word in order to have a different way of thinking.

Prior to coming back to the Mission last October, my life was in shambles. I was homeless and bankrupt spiritually, mentally, and emotionally. My husband and I were seriously considering divorce. BUT GOD!! I was sitting in the gym one day and I felt the Spirit of God say, “Your life is not your own and the only thing you have to change is everything!” That was where the change began in me. I’ve come to realize I’ve never had an addiction problem – I’ve had a heart problem. For twenty-five years, I’ve had a God sized hole in me and I’ve been putting things in it that were never meant to fit. Not long after being here, I began working at the back desk and it helped

me to see that God loves everybody the same. He’s not a respecter of persons. The ladies staying in the emergency shelter at Owen’s House show me what love, acceptance, peace, and forgiveness look like. They minister to me most days more than I do them. Two months after being here, my husband, John, entered the program. I’ve seen my husband’s heart change, and I know that can only be the Lord working in his life. Our marriage has been completely restored.

A few months ago, I began praying for God to make a way for me to continue working in the emergency shelter at Owen’s House. A few weeks before I was to start seeking employment, our women’s ministry director approached me with a position as a Case Management Coordinator.

That was an answer to prayer! But the blessing didn’t stop here. I have been blessed with an opportunity to complete the E4GW (Equipping For Good Works) Certificate Program in Biblical Counseling which will help me guide the ladies into the truth of God’s Word. There are days I don’t feel qualified to do my job, but God doesn’t call the qualified, He qualifies the called. I don’t deserve any of the blessings God has given me here at the Mission, but I am truly grateful. To God be the Glory!!

Revelation 12:11 says I’m an overcomer through the blood of the Lamb and the word of my testimony.

esus, our Savior and Lord, provides us the perfect example of ministering to and serving others throughout the Bible. As my husband and I serve in the role of youth leaders at our church, God impressed upon our hearts to ensure that we teach that generation to witness to those around them and to follow Jesus’ example in serving others.

God fixed a continual reminder within me that we need to be mission-minded, spreading the good news of salvation through Christ and serving people in need, right in our own communities.

“FOR EVEN THE SON OF MAN CAME NOT TO BE MINISTERED UNTO, BUT TO MINISTER, AND TO GIVE HIS LIFE A RANSOM FOR MANY.” MARK 10:45 The Downtown Rescue Mission (DRM) has become one of those mission fields for our family and our youth group. Whether we are serving a meal, straightening up in the clothing area, or popping popcorn and painting faces at the Fall Festival, we feel a sense of purpose in serving those in need in our own backyard. Serving together in whatever small way we are able to serve, builds stronger

bonds between us as a youth group, helps all of us realize that the world is much larger and has a bigger purpose than our own daily lives around us, and allows us to use our God-given talents and abilities in service to others.

We also enjoy interacting with the people we meet at the DRM and telling them what God has done in our lives.

As I drove home to finish writing this article, one of the children from church that was with me randomly and excitedly asked, “Are we going to get to go to the Rescue Mission to help with the Fall Festival again this year? That was fun.” I asked him what was fun about it, and he said that it was fun to get to help people that are in need. I was shocked that he brought it up as I was thinking about how to close the article. I had not mentioned that to him at all, but then I smiled as God used those few words to show me how serving at the DRM helps us as much as we are helping others.

Thanksgiving FOOD DRIVE

W

e need your help this Thanksgiving. Many men, women, and children will spend Thanksgiving hungry and homeless, with an

aching reminder of the things they need and don’t have. You can help change their lives by showing them the compassion of Christ today by feeding empty stomachs and hurting souls.

We are seeking churches, companies, and other groups who are willing to help us with our Thanksgiving Food Drive. If you are able to assist us, we ask you to choose one of the items below that you can collect the entire

quantity needed. We are willing to provide collection barrels and pick them up at your convenience.

We need 1,000 of the following items: • Cranberry sauce (14-15 oz. cans) • Yams/sweet potatoes (14-15 oz. cans) • Macaroni and cheese • Instant mashed potatoes • Instant dressing The food listed above, along with green beans, kernel corn, gravy packets, rolls, and turkeys, will be distributed to those in need within our community and served internally during our Thanksgiving week festivities. We are trying to target 11-12-19 as a date to get the food we need for Thanksgiving. This will allow us time to get it sorted and organized for the distribution.

alling all hunters and gun enthusiasts! On Thursday, October 17, 2019, the Downtown Rescue Mission will host its 5th Annual Shoot4Shelter sporting clay tournament at Limestone Hunting Preserve in Ardmore, Alabama. The clay shoot will provide multiple challenging stations and fun games. We will start the morning’s activities with a continental breakfast and door prize opportunities.
