PREPARING FOR MEDICAL EMERGENCIES

W

e are always striving to improve every area of our ministry. Our desire is to maintain a safe and secure campus for our guests, residents, families, and volunteers. Steps toward being better equipped to help those with medical emergencies happened last year, but we need your help to keep improving this area of our ministry.

The skills he acquired through training have already saved lives here at the Mission.

I

n Luke 10:30, 33-34 Jesus says, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among robbers, and they stripped him and beat him, and went away leaving him half dead. But a Samaritan, who was on a journey, came upon him; and when he saw him, he felt compassion. And came to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them; and he put him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn and took care of him.”

We all have heard the familiar parable that Jesus told about the Good Samaritan. After two other religious men had already passed by this man who was in dire need the Samaritan came by and showed the man compassion. It did not matter how old he was, or what his skin color was, or what language he spoke, he felt a need to care for someone that no one else would care for. You see the Samaritans were hated and despised and seen as only half breeds by the Jewish culture. But Jesus’ assertion was that Christian love should have no boundaries.

Here at the Downtown Rescue Mission our goal is to reach out to all of humanity, whether rich or poor, young or old, any shape, size, color or race. We want to show and share Christ’s love with anyone who will listen. In fact, my staff and I believe that the only way the men, women and children who come to the Mission will truly find help is when they make that life changing decision to accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.

In Romans 3:23 it states, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” It’s not just the homeless guy under the bridge, or those addicted to drugs and alcohol and not just the poor and homeless, but all fall short. We can be thankful that God sent his only son to die for all of our sins. In Romans 6:23 it says, “For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.” This is the eternal message that we share everyday at DRM.

Drew Gilbert, Director of Security and Safety, completed the adult and pediatric first aide/ CPR certification training in February 2016.

The following month he completed the adult and pediatric first aide/CPR/ AED instructor certification training. The skills he acquired through training have already saved lives here at the Mission.

We need your help to train our staff on how to properly use the AED and ensure each of us are CPR certified. According to Drew, we need a sponsor to purchase for us “a minimum of one (4) four pack of Adult CPR Manikins, costing $620. We will also need one (4) pack of AED trainers costing $650. It would be nice to have a one (4) pack of Infant CPR Manikins costing $540, not only because we house infants but also because we will soon have a new building with even more infants staying with us.”

The total purchase price for everything we need is approx. $1,810.

Beyond our staff at the Mission, our thrift store employees can benefit from this training.

M

y name is Loewen Beasley and I have resided at the Downtown Rescue Mission over the past five months as part of their discipleship recovery program. During these five months, I am proud to say that I have come to know Christ for the first time in my life. I have struggled with drug addiction over the past six years, during which I was in and out of jail and different treatment centers.

“It wasn’t until I decided to put my life and trust in the hands of God that my life began to have significant changes. ” I was on a path of self-destruction while bringing others down with me. I wanted to lead a better life, but didn’t

know how to change it. It wasn’t until I decided to put my life and trust in the hands of God that my life began to have significant changes. The program has made me realize that god has a purpose for me and in that realization, has changed my heart and mindset. My relationship with friends and family are better than ever now. God brought me to the DRM for a reason.

I have the opportunity not to just learn, but also share God’s Word with others. My faith in God has brought peace into my life and I’m excited about continuing this path of spiritual growth. Becoming the person I am now from who I was before I knew Christ is an awesome display of God’s power. He changed me and can do the same with you.

REFUGE 2017 A Conference for busy women seeking God March 25, 2017 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

oin us for an interdenominational women’s event focused on helping you keep Christ in the center of your busy life. How do I juggle an overstuffed calendar and still grow in my faith?

Worship leader Julie Blauwkamp and speakers Stephanie Malone and Rica McRoy will help us find refuge in Christ in the middle of deadlines, PTO meetings, workouts, and swim practices. The cost is $25.00 and includes conferences fees and lunch.

SPRING FOOD DRIVE

F

or many years, the Mission’s donation model has not been that healthy. We currently receive the bulk of our resources in the last four months of the year with the prayer they will last until the same time the following year. This model will not work moving forward. In order to drastically change our current donation model, we need a strong spring food drive to pair with our already established fall food drives.

“We are seeking to expand our food ministries in both the amount of food we are distributing and in the geographic area that is supported. We saw a growth in the amount of food distributed by food pantries to individuals from approximately 33,000 pounds in 2015 to 87,000 pounds in 2016. In addition to this we have begun increasing our assistance to other ministries in need. We regularly assist groups like New Futures, Rose of Sharon, Harris Home for Children, First Stop, The Well, Refiners Fire Ministries, and many others.”
