“AND LET US NOT GROW WEARY OF DOING GOOD, FOR IN DUE SEASON WE WILL REAP, IF WE DO NOT GIVE UP.”

Galatians 6:9

ALWAYS MEETING THE NEED

Huntsville, AL is a wonderful city. I have lived here for more than a quarter of a century. During that time, I have seen our city thrive and over the last few years this community has been recognized, multiple times and in multiple publications, as one of the best places to live. With those accolades has come an explosion of growth in both population and in new industries with job opportunities. With that growth, Huntsville is now seen as one of the largest, if not, the largest city in Alabama. The growth has brought about new schools, houses, restaurants, performance venues and even car washes on every corner.

It’s exciting to see the growth and enthusiasm throughout our community, but as the old saying goes, “with growth comes growing pains”. Our roads are more crowded, wait times at restaurants are longer and in general everything is busier. Over this same time the population of men, women and children who are near poverty or find themselves homeless in our city

has grown. I was looking back at my records from ten years ago and found that the Downtown Rescue Mission has doubled the number of people we are helping. This past year was a record year for us in almost every category. We served almost 450,000 hot nutritious meals; our beds were slept in almost 120,000 times (an average of more than 350 people per night), our programs were close to capacity and our community outreach ministries were at record levels.

I love this community, and I know that DRM helps to make our community great! It’s because of faithful individuals, businesses, churches and foundations that the Mission can continue to care for our communities’ most needy neighbors and families. Thank you for your support and prayers. As DRM enters its 50th year our goal is to continue to grow and meet the needs of our community as our community thrives.

HOPE AND RENEWAL

“THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD; I SHALL NOT WANT. HE MAKES ME TO LIE DOWN IN GREEN PASTURES; HE LEADS ME BESIDE THE STILL WATERS. HE RESTORES MY SOUL; HE LEADS ME IN THE PATHS OF RIGHTEOUSNESS FOR HIS NAME’S SAKE.”

Psalms 23:1-3

Hey,

my name is Shawnieque. I’m 31 years old, married, and a mother of four beautiful children. Before I came to the Downtown Rescue Mission, I was a recovering addict trying to stay on the right track with God. However, I was losing hope due to all the odds stacked against me.

I had been dealing with falsified drug screens, being in jail, DHR issues, and the enemy trying to sneak all of my past back into my life. But God stopped it all when He sent me to the Downtown Rescue Mission. I’ve gained so much from being here—through classes, devotionals, counseling, prayer, and staying in God’s word.

He has completely changed my mentality from one focused on survival and victimization to simply being grateful for everything He has given me while I walk the path God has laid out for me. I’m currently in my last step of the Owen’s House Recovery Program, and I graduate in February!

CALLED TO SERVE

My name is Lauren, and I started volunteering at the Downtown Rescue Mission at the beginning of November 2024. I recently became a Christian earlier in 2024 and felt the Lord leading me to serve in my local community.

In Matthew 9:37-38, Jesus says to His disciples “The harvest truly is plentiful, but the laborers are few. Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into His harvest.” As Christ’s disciples, we are called to be the hands and feet of Jesus. God was gracious and merciful to me, even when I was far from Him; now I want to be able to bless others with the gifts and abilities He has given me.

“THEN THE RIGHTEOUS WILL ANSWER HIM, SAYING ‘LORD, WHEN DID WE SEE YOU HUNGRY AND FEED YOU, OR THIRSTY AND GIVE YOU DRINK? WHEN DID WE SEE YOU A STRANGER AND TAKE YOU IN, OR NAKED AND CLOTHE YOU? OR WHEN DID WE SEE YOU SICK, OR IN PRISON, AND COME TO YOU?’ AND THE KING WILL ANSWER AND SAY TO THEM, ‘ASSUREDLY, I SAY TO YOU, IN AS MUCH AS YOU DID IT TO ONE OF THE LEAST OF THESE MY BRETHREN, YOU DID IT TO ME.’”

Matthew 25:37-40

Volunteering at the Mission has been so fulfilling and such a blessing to my life. There is much joy that comes from serving and helping others. I have been praying for the Lord to show me where the need is, and

where He leads, I will follow. I truly believe He has led me to this organization, even if it’s for a season. I am very grateful for all the kind people I have met here and to be a small part of what they do.
