heard a story a few years ago about a wealthy Christian man’s son who had earned a full scholarship to study business at an Ivy League School. The son worked hard and graduated with honors. For weeks before his graduation the son would hint to his father that he wanted the shiny new BMW that sat in the car dealer’s show room near their home as a graduation gift. Graduation day came and the son was filled with excitement to get home to see if his dad came through with his gift. The father called the son into his study and gave his son a beautifully rapped gift box. He unwrapped the gift to find a new Bible with his name engraved on it. The son was devastated that his father had only gotten him a new Bible and in total disappointment slammed it down on his dad’s desk and said, “This is all I get for all my hard work”. He stormed out and never contacted his father again. Through the years the son did well and built his own thriving business and during that time his bitterness towards his father faded. As he was planning a trip to surprise his dad and mend their relationship he received a call from an estate lawyer telling him that his dad had passed away and left him everything.
With great sadness he went back to his father’s home to sort everything out. When he arrived he went to his father’s study and surprisingly found the Bible in the same place on the desk where he had slammed it many years before. With tears in his eyes he opened it and out slipped a key with a BMW logo and a note saying “paid in full”. Just like the son in this story many miss out on the gift that God has given us…salvation through His Son. All we need to do is accept His free gift. At DRM we consider every person who comes through our doors a gift from God. Our goal is to share with each of them that greatest gift. God loved us so much that he sent his son to die and be a payment for our sins (see John 3:16). If we receive His gift it is PAID IN FULL! The Mission is seeing another record year helping about 25% more men, women and children than last year. In fact, we are bursting at the seams. Hello, my name is Tiffany, and I am 42 years old. I came to Huntsville, Alabama from Memphis, TN. I have struggled with alcoholism for over 20 years and undiagnosed mental illness all my life.
I decided to get sober in 2017 spending a year in clinical rehabilitation and properly diagnosing and getting treated for my mental illness. Stayed sober for 5 years and got married to a drug and alcohol consoler. I followed the 12-step program of Alcoholics Anonymous.
Just when I thought I might be doing well I relapsed and refused to get back on the wagon because there was something or someone Alcoholic Anonymous was missing.
As I loathed in self-hatred and self-pity I was at the brink of death. My older sister who has lived in Huntsville, AL for over 10 years and lived with my mother pushed me to go to the Downtown Rescue Mission. So, I left the streets of Memphis, TN, and went to Huntsville, AL. My sister stated that I was going to kill myself.
I was relieved when I walked through the doors of the Downtown Rescue Mission. The streets of Memphis are hard and cold, but the smiles and the joy that permeated out of the beautiful staff and others sparked in me something I let go of years ago. The life-changing miracle is that I met someone I ‘ve been yearning for all my life, Jesus. So, with a heart of gratitude, I am thankful for my hardships and my trials. “For I consider that the sufferings of the present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us.”

My name is Tennille, and I am the Director of the Women’s Program Ministry. The women’s program is a twelve-month Biblically based life transformation program for women struggling with addictions, homelessness, and other life struggles. The Mission gives ladies a safe place to come and heal and get their lives together.

Addictions and life struggles can happen to anyone. It does not matter what socio-economic background you come from, we can all face struggles and hardships. Life is hard, recovery is hard, but our God is bigger. I love that we teach the ladies in the program about Jesus. He is the only one who can truly set us free and heal us from our addictions and life struggles. Seeing the transformation in the ladies’ lives is amazing and why I do what I do. There is nothing too big for our God! I am thankful for God’s calling in my life to help women and I’m thankful for the support I receive here from our ministry team.
