Hope FROM Despair
Reason FOR THE Season C

“TODAY IN THE TOWN OF DAVID A SAVIOR HAS BEEN BORN TO YOU; HE IS THE MESSIAH, THE LORD. THIS WILL BE A SIGN TO YOU: YOU WILL FIND A BABY WRAPPED IN CLOTHS AND LYING IN A MANGER.” Luke 2:11-12
hristmas for many is a joyous time of having parties, fellowshipping with family and friends, and giving gifts to people we care for. But Christmas has become so commercialized that many have forgotten the real reason for the season. Retail stores and communities have even banned manger scenes and the phrase Merry Christmas. At the Mission, we teach and celebrate the true meaning of Christmas that God gave the greatest gift, His Son, to be born and eventually die as a sacrifice for man’s sin. During the next few weeks we will have parties, events, and gift giving with our guests to celebrate Christmas, but we never lose focus that it is all about Christ! Many of the men, women, and children that stay at the Mission
have never experienced a Christcentered Christmas before. It is refreshing to see the joy in the eyes of all of our folks as we celebrate what might be the first real CHRISTmas! As you gather with your friends and family please remember the Downtown Rescue Mission as we minister to the needy and hurting people of our community. Without your prayers and support, we could not continue sharing the Gospel to a lost and dying world. We at the Mission are grateful for your partnership and on behalf of my staff, our board of directors, and the guests who stay at the DRM, I want to wish you a very Merry Christmas!

Hope FROM Despair “BE STRONG AND COURAGEOUS. DO NOT FEAR OR BE IN DREAD OF THEM, FOR IT IS THE LORD YOUR GOD WHO GOES WITH YOU. HE WILL NOT LEAVE YOU OR FORSAKE YOU.” DEUTERONOMY 31:6
n October 2018, my daughter, husband, and I were living in Palm Bay, Florida, and found out my husband had cancer. His condition eventually led him to quit both of his jobs. In November, my husband’s son wanted us to come to Las Vegas where he was stationed so he could help me take care of him. In December, I left my job, almost all of our belongings, and the house we were renting to move to Las Vegas. A week later, we took my husband to the ER and found out the cancer had spread throughout his whole body. As January 2019 came, my husband’s condition worsened, and he was placed on hospice. It wasn’t long after that, on February 17th, when he passed away. One month later his son got stationed overseas so my daughter and I had no choice but to try to find another place to live. I found a shelter in Colorado to go to; we stayed here for a month. I was unable to find work because my daughter was out of school and I had no childcare. I did a lot of praying and felt led to move back to Alabama, where I lived when I
was in my twenties. I didn’t know anyone in Alabama but felt something kept telling me to have faith and believe God will make a way. I prayed and prayed and God gave me peace to move. He was with us during the whole trip. When we got to Alabama, I looked up shelters and saw the Mission was listed. I called and they had a bed for my daughter and me. After my husband passed away, I was so scared that I didn’t know what my daughter and I were going to do. When the Mission said they had a bed for us, I felt so much relief. Since I’ve been here, I have become closer to God. I’ve been able to build my confidence back that I had lost many years ago. As soon as my daughter started school, I went back to doing what I love – taking care of people who are unable to take care of themselves. I work as a CNA at a nursing home. If it was not for God and the Mission, I know I would be very lost. My daughter and I would be out on the streets. I plan on getting a car so I am able to get back and forth to work. Riding the public transportation bus adds several hours to my commute to work, and I’ll be glad to eliminate the extra time riding to get back to the Mission. I also plan on going back to college to become a hospice nurse and eventually, starting up a nurse staffing company, calling it Angels on a Mission. This has always been my dream. With God on my side, I know I can conquer anything.

e believe the words of Luke 12:48, “To whom much is given, much is expected.” Our team has been blessed so that we can be a blessing to others. The mission of Matt Curtis Real Estate, Inc. is to fulfill the great commission given by Jesus in Acts 1:8. In this verse, Jesus commands us to be His witnesses in Jerusalem, which is an analogy for serving people in our city. It’s for this reason that we work so hard to create the area’s best place to work. We also offer optional Bible studies and opportunities to serve our community.
“TO WHOM MUCH IS GIVEN, MUCH IS EXPECTED.” Luke 12:48
Jesus then commands us to be His witnesses in Judea and Samaria, which is an analogy of serving people in the Tennessee Valley. It’s for this reason that we have a heart for the poor, widows, and orphans of North Alabama. And finally, we’re called to the “ends of the earth,” which is why we build a home for a
family in Nicaragua (where one in four kids die before the age of 5 due to inadequate housing) for every 100 homes that we sell and have a vision to build a 1,000 total homes. We partnered with the Downtown Rescue Mission from September through November in running a Backpack Drive. The idea for the drive was one of our teammates, Stephanie Kritzer. This drive was to collect 270 backpacks filled with the necessities homeless men, women, and children often go without. We are humbled to say that, with Jimmy John’s and the community’s support, we were able to donate 351 backpacks. The Downtown Rescue Mission holds a special place in our hearts as it serves many people who do not have a voice. We are grateful for the Downtown Rescue Mission and all they have done to benefit this community. Matt Curtis Owner and Broker Matt Curtis Real Estate, Inc. Madison, AL
