Fun Facts!
1. The alley straight across from Center Ithaca, where The History Center in Tompkins County is located, is known as “Bank Alley!”
2. Believe it or not, a trolley system used to run through the Commons and bring people around town. Built in 1887, the trolley system ran for many years until the 1930’s when the trolley was officially shut down, due to it being dangerous. (Reynolds, 2015) Now, when you walk out of Center Ithaca on the Commons facing Bank Alley to Tioga Street, this area is now known as “Trolley Circle.”

History of Downtown Ithaca
In the late 1800’s, more and more structures were being added to Downtown Ithaca. Perhaps the most well-known architect in Ithaca’s history, William H. Miller (who was one of the first students of architecture at Cornell University), designed several downtown buildings. They include the Dewitt Building (1912) 215 N. Cayuga; the Sage Block (1884), 137-139 E. State; the Stowell House (1880), 303 N. Aurora; the Dean House (1895), 306 N. Aurora; and the Baptist Congregational (now Greek Orthodox) and Unitarian churches. Additionally, he also designed the Second Empire alteration of the Clinton House in 1872. A few other important architects of that time were Alfred B. Dale, J. Lakin Baldridge, and Ira Tillotson.
As years went on, buildings changed, some were torn down and others obviously added. Unfortunately, in the 1950’s the downtown area began to deteriorate. In 1964, the Urban Renewal Agency was established, and tore down additional buildings, while also building some new ones. (Ithaca Journal, Oct. 1, 1964). By 1974, the Ithaca Commons (one of the few remaining pedestrian malls in America) was born. Center Ithaca opened in 1981, providing additional storefront spaces and housing. Over the years, several new development projects have been added, including more recent projects completed with help, in part from our organization, including; the Tompkins Financial Building, Canopy by Hilton, CFCU Bank Building, City Centre Project, and Harold’s Square. Current projects under construction include the Ithacan, Asteri Project and Conference Center.
Downtown is
This large whole-block project is both the Asteri and the Ithacan development projects. Together, these projects will result in the construction of two 11-story buildings with 181 affordable housing units, a state-of-the-art community conference center, retail space, and 200 market rate apartments. It will transform Green Street with public spaces and infrastructure updates.
The Green Street Garage portion of the project has now reopened, with the Conference Center and housing anticipated in 2024.
Since 2004, downtown has experienced over half a billion dollars in new investment in housing and lodging development. A significant period of this growth occurred during the past seven years.

Areas to Explore
The Ithaca Commons
Nowadays, pedestrian malls are a rarity. The Ithaca Commons is one of only six pedestrian malls in all of New York State and one of 64 across the entire nation. It is the heart of Downtown Ithaca and is home to several shops, restaurants, and year-round events!
Downtown has several independently owned clothing boutiques including Benjamin Peters, Breathe and Petrune, as well as several unique gift shops like Sunny Days, Home Green Home, and Mockingbird Paperie. Being that Ithaca is somewhat of an “art mecca,” there are several local arts and crafts stores including 15 Steps, American Crafts by Robbie Dean, and One World Market. Popular footwear can be found at Homegrown Skateshop and for those who are big literature fans, you can visit one of the many independently owned book shops
in downtown; Buffalo Street Books, Autumn Leaves Bookstore or Odyssey Bookstore. Ithaca is also home to many waterfalls and state parks, so the Outdoor Store is the perfect place to visit on the Commons if you are in the mood for a hike!
Ithaca is also well known for its fine selection of gourmet foods and cocktails at restaurants such as Lev Kitchen, Mia Tapas Bar and Restaurant, Monks on the Commons, Simeon’s American Bistro, Paris Baguette and the new Creola Southern Steakhouse. Authentic Asian dishes can be found at Kimchi or Sushi Osaka. There are also several local coffee shops located downtown; Collegetown Bagels, Hound and Mare, and Nothing Nowhere. The Center Ithaca food court has several quick bites including,
Lou’s Street Food, which offers classic American fare, as well as Adam Grill, which offers Mediterranean Halal food.
The Ithaca Commons are also very family friendly! There are a variety of children’s retail stores, like Alphabet Soup which has educational toys, puzzles, games, books and more! The Brain Shoppe is also located on the Commons. This unique store offers several brain teaser games and products. Families can explore the Sagan Planet Walk, named after famed Cornell University astronomer Carl Sagan. This is a scale model of the solar system which originates with the sun on the Commons and stretches ¾ mile to the Sciencenter. The inner ring planets all fit on a short section of Bank Alley.
Gateway Plaza
&
Gateway Plaza offers Downtown’s best-kept secret, the pleasant views of the Six Mile Creek Nature Area, a dedicated pedestrian walkway that extends to Coltivare on Cayuga Street.
Gateway Plaza and East State is another niche area downtown to explore at the east end of the Commons offering visitors and residents mouth-watering dining and culturally rich opportunities. Angelhearts Diner, in the plaza, offers a grand selection of vegan cuisine. For some American fare, grab some freshly baked pizza slices from Domino’s.
Across the street from Gateway Plaza is a boutique B&B, Argos Inn and Argos Warehouse, an event space. Housed in a historic mansion, Argos Inn has 13 luxurious guest rooms with original works of art by local and renowned artists. Innovative and historic cocktails are an absolute musttry in the world-class Bar Argos where you’ll find an outdoor bar and cabanas. Or enjoy vegetable-driven dishes and tasty mixed cocktails at The Greenhouse
East State
Cafe and Cocktail Lounge. Also, make an appointment for self-care at Alta Spa!
There is also the Community School of Music & Art, a dynamic meeting place for artists, community members and educators to explore ideas, artistic expression, and creativity together. On the other side of the street, City Centre, offers luxury apartments with the finest amenities. There you’ll find Collegetown Bagels which has the longest list of
handcrafted sandwiches in the city, some of which are named for local celebrities. Ithaca Ale House offering a fun sports bar setting with signature gourmet burgers.
Restaurant Row
Aptly named for its concentration of diverse dining options, Restaurant Row is home to some of the best chefs in the region and is a soughtout foodie paradise. The variety is eclectic! Viva Taqueria, which has moved across the street at the end of the Commons at the Marriott, offers freshly prepared and inexpensive Mexican food. Asia Cuisine boasts an expansive array of Japanese, Chinese, and Korean comfort dishes--their sushi roll menu is vast! Ultra-modern hangouts like Luna Inspired Street Food, allow you to order your worldly favorite street food, directly from your phone.
Suppose you need a sophisticated beverage, concocted by a skilled mixologist to complete your mealyou must dine at Simeon’s American
Bistro, Monks on the Commons, Mercato, or Le Cafe Cent-Dix. Need a place guaranteed to satisfy your brews and burgers craving? Head into Red’s Place or Ithaca Ale House. Check out the new Creola Southern Steakhouse. For a selection of brewed coffee and specialty drinks, stop into Ooy’s Deli, and find tasty breakfast and lunch sandwiches at Hound and Mare. Plus, check out Revelry Yards, featuring casual lunch and dinner experiences, and a beer garden.
When the weather is nice, half the town will be dining al fresco in front of the restaurants!
Press Bay Alley & Court
Press Bay Alley and Press Bay Court are unique areas in Downtown Ithaca. Located on West Green Street, they are just a short walk west of the Commons. Many shops can be found at Press Bay Court, as well as some delicious bites to eat! For example, SewGreen offers beautiful fabric, yarn, sewing supplies, and more!

Also, check out Tacos CDMX, the newest addition to Press Bay, serving up some of the best tacos New York State has to offer! Fibers is a women’s fashion boutique featuring handwoven jackets, colorful pashminas, and handcrafted jewelry.

PREMIERES OCTOBER 16 & 17, 8/7c
THE AMERICAN BUFFALO, a new two-part, four-hour series from director Ken Burns, takes viewers on a journey through more than 10,000 years of North American history and across some of the continent’s most iconic landscapes, tracing the animal’s evolution, significance to the Great Plains, near demise, and relationship to the Indigenous People of North America.
The dining scene in Ithaca is as flavorful and diverse as the community itself. Scattered throughout downtown are a variety of dining establishments to fit every taste, budget, and occasion: from upscale bistros to casual cafes; from authentic delicatessens to intimate taverns. ADVENTURES
NATURE
Waterfalls: After all, Ithaca is Gorges!
Five hundred generations ago, glaciers a mile high melted to a landscape of crystal lakes, jagged gorges and thundering waterfalls. The waterfalls are found along creeks that flow into Cayuga Lake. Many parks with trails will have a gorge trail, which follows the creek and along the edge of the gorge there will be an overlook to the falls.
Cascadilla Creek Gorge
Connecting the Cornell campus to downtown (“the greenway connecting town and gown”). One of Cornell Plantations’ natural areas, this gorge is a natural greenway in the heart of an urban area. Gorge walk is 1.3 miles with many stairs. Enter at Linn St. near Downtown.
Ithaca Falls
The cascading fall is Fall Creek’s final plunge to Cayuga Lake.. With a drop of 150ft and width of 175ft, Ithaca Falls is the region’s most powerful and most impressive. By 1817, a half-dozen mills were operating here, their ruins are still visible on the south bank. Directions: From Downtown Ithaca, take Aurora St. north 0.7mi to Lincoln St. Turn right, then take an immediate left onto Lake St. The falls will be on your right.
Additional waterfall and gorge experiences can be had close to downtown including Taughannock Falls State Park, Buttermilk Falls State Park & Robert Treman State Park. For more information go to VisitIthaca.com or stop by and pick up your waterfall guide at the Visitor’s Center.
