Five hundred generations ago, glaciers a mile high melted to a landscape of crystal lakes, jag ged gorges and thundering waterfalls. The water falls are found along creeks that flow into Cayuga Lake. Many parks with trails will have a gorge trail, which follows the creek and along the edge of the gorge there will be an overlook to the falls.
Connecting the Cornell campus to downtown (“the greenway connecting town and gown”). One of Cornell Plantations’ natural areas, this gorge is a natural greenway in the heart of an urban area. Gorge walk is 1.3 miles with many stairs. Enter at Linn St. near Downtown.
The cascading fall is Fall Creek’s final plunge to Cayuga Lake.. With a drop of 150ft and width of 175ft, Ithaca Falls is the region’s most powerful and most impressive. By 1817, a half-dozen mills were operating here, their ruins are still visible on the south bank. Directions: From Downtown Ithaca, take Aurora St. north 0.7mi to Lincoln St. Turn right, then take an immediate left onto Lake St. The falls will be on your right.
Additional waterfall and gorge experiences can be had close to downtown including Taughannock Falls State Park, Buttermilk Falls State Park and Robert Treman State Park. For more information go to VisitIthaca.com or stop by and pick up your waterfall guide at the Visitor Center.
