A Pedestrian Counter is a digital device installed to monitor foot traffic day in and day out at 10 key locations around the Ithaca Commons. With multiple entry points onto the Commons, the counters provide valuable data to comprehend pedestrian behavior, volume, and trends downtown. The Downtown Ithaca Alliance (DIA) collaborates with SpringBoard, a UK and US-based company with service locations in California and Massachusetts. The counters were installed in March 2020 and became operational just days before the national pandemic lockdown. Before activating MotionLoft in 2019, DIA received pedestrian counter service at two locations through Motionloft software. Although these numbers are foot traffic counts and not a headcount of individuals, they still provide useful activity data.
