The PEARL STREET MALL

In the 1940s, legend has it that a long-time resident of Boulder once said that Pearl Street was “a good place to buy a pair of socks.” The town’s main thoroughfare has been many things to many people during its decadeslong evolution from mud to mall. (Did you know that the four-block walking mall is actually a city park?)

No visit to Boulder is complete without a stroll down the world-famous Pearl Street Mall, the historic heart of the city. Many of the buildings on the mall date back to the gold mining days of the 1880s and they have all been painstakingly restored to their original charm and elegance. In 2022, the mall celebrated its 45th anniversary and to this day continues to be one of the most successful pedestrian malls in the country. Bustling with visitors and locals most every single day of the year, the mall has been described as the best place in Colorado for people-watching and enjoying street entertainers. Buskers are plentiful year-round and a variety of musicians compete for your

ear on each of the thoughtfully designed four blocks of shade trees, play areas, fountains and flower gardens. Kids can enjoy the natural play/interactive structures on each block of the mall - from the Weeping Rock on the 1100 block; the climbing rock play area on the 1200 block; the pop jet fountain on the 1300 block (summer months only) and the marble & brass animals on the 1400 block.

The mall is also home to legendary shops, restaurants and art galleries including the world’s biggest kite store, Colorado’s largest kitchen & gourmet store and an exciting variety of outdoor retailers. Plus there are dozens of other “only in Boulder” venues – over 80 percent locally owned and operated! This amazing community gathering spot is often called “Boulder’s Living Room” by locals because of its welcoming vibe and countless opportunities for human connections. Outdoor ACTIVITIES

Whether it is hiking, biking, jogging or kayaking, there is something in downtown Boulder (or close by) for the outdoor lover in all of us. Take a 1,300-foot climb above the city to Flagstaff Mountain at 7,000 feet (approximately five miles from downtown) or try the gentler The Peoples’ Crossing (located on the west end of Pearl Street at its junction with Canyon Boulevard) connecting to the Anemone, Red Rocks and Sunshine Canyon Trails. Enjoy a ride around town on an electric bike or go old school and use the power of the foot pedal!

The Boulder Creek Path runs right along downtown Boulder on Canyon Boulevard. The creek path is a 5.5 mile stretch of trail passing through downtown and providing fun that both children and adults can enjoy! Feeling adventurous? Grab a flotation device, jump in and explore the creek while cooling off. Chautauqua trailhead and park is conveniently located just a mile and a half from downtown Boulder, at the base of the beautiful Rocky Mountain foothills. Chautauqua offers breathtaking scenic views, a dining hall, a concert hall and cabins and trails

galore. From Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day, ride the free weekend (Park to Park) shuttle to get there stress-free and to avoid parking fees. There is a Shuttle stop next to Salt’s patio on 11th Street (at Pearl Street). There are also several stops on Walnut Street and another at Spruce and Broadway.

Stop by University Bikes to rent a two wheeler for the day or check out Boulder B-Cycle for traditional and electronic bikes with conveniently located stations throughout the city.

Visiting in the summer months? Have your kids cool off in the Pop Jet Fountain on the 1300 block of the Pearl Street Mall or let them climb rocks on the play area on the 1200 block. Don’t forget to visit the critters on the 1400 block (don’t worry...they don’t bite) and stroll over to the Civic Area to check out the playground near the Boulder Public Library! And if you consider yourself a runner, Boulder has plenty of options to keep you busy during the summer from the BolderBOULDER and Pearl Street Mile to the annual Boulderthon marathon.

Plan a day DOWNTOWN

Here for an Afternoon?

This is just enough time for a memorable couple of hours. First things first, make your way to the Pearl Street Mall and grab a bite at one of our many incredible restaurants. Consider a rooftop lunch at Avanti Boulder; a patio table at Japango or stop by Falafel King to grab a quick bite on the go. Once you’re full, it’s time for some shopping. Be sure to check out iconic destinations on the Bricks like Peppercorn, the Boulder Book Store, Art Source International and Into the Wind. Head to the East End to grab a Boulder souvenir from BoCo Life. Check out Boulder History at the Museum of Boulder. If you still have some time, take a stroll down to the Dushanbe Tea House for a soothing cup of tea before you’re on your way.

Here for a Day?

Are you ready to make some lasting memories? Here we go! A great way to get a quick sense for downtown Boulder is through a self-guided tour / scavenger hunt from Amazing Scavenger Hunt Adventure or Let’s Roam Scavenger Hunt Company. Enjoy a guided electric cruiser bike tour from Boulder Tour Company or explore downtown’s culinary scene with Local Table Tours. If you want to add some extra adventure to the mix, grab a bike for the day from Boulder BCycle or University Bikes. At some point, stop by the Civic Area / Central Park featuring Boulder Creek access, a playground and open turf for picnicking and other recreational activities. Turn the page in this guide and look for information on our Makers Trail and Alley Gallery tour - you won’t be disappointed! Spend some time on the East End exploring Jones + Co., Mount Inspiration, Dedalus Wine Shop and Market and Stio. By the time you make it to the West End you’ll probably have worked up an appetite, so head for some elevated dining at ND Streetbar, Jax Fish House or My Neighbor Felix (just to name a few). A great way to end the perfect day is with a classic cocktail and a view from Corrida’s rooftop location.

Here for a Weekend?

Now we’re talking! First you need a place to rest your head. We highly recommend the St Julien, the Hotel Boulderado and the Bradley Boulder Inn. If you’re arriving on a Friday, ease into town by treating yourself to an incredible meal - consider Spruce Farm & Fish, Steakhouse No. 316, OAK at Fourteenth, or Frasca Food and Wine. On Saturday, head right to the Boulder Farmers Market to experience the scene and partake in some delicious handcrafted bites to eat while you stroll along the Boulder Creek Path. Feeling creative? Explore Food Lab, Colorado Glass Works or Color Me Mine. Leave plenty of time for nutritious (and delicious) dining. Try a local favorite like Chicken Parmigiana Chiaverini at Pasta Jay’s; a grilled salmon fried rice bowl from Gaku Ramen; T/aco’s cotjita street taco; or The Post’s original chicken & waffle. Be sure to see what’s happening at the Boulder Theater and eTown to catch a great act at one of these iconic venues. When you wake up on Sunday feeling fulfilled, it’s time to get yourself a celebratory breakfast at favorites like Snooze An A.M. Eatery or Foolish Craig’s. For a coffee fix, stop in at Trident, Boxcar Coffee Roasters or Laughing Goat Coffeehouse. After enjoying a delicious breakfast, take a leisurely walk to Smithklein Gallery, R Gallery + Wine Bar, Starfish Jewelry and Art Mart for some mellow browsing as you start planning your next visit back. No matter how much time you have to enjoy the downtown district, stop by the Downtown Visitor Information Center (1303 Pearl Street) where friendly ambassadors can assist you with recommendations, maps and brochures. VISUAL WOW!!!

For decades, artists and art lovers alike have been inspired by Boulder’s natural beauty. Artistic expression can be found just about everywhere you look in the downtown district. From lush landscaping along the Pearl Street Mall and colorful storefronts that welcome visitors to outdoor sculptures that are front and center and also tucked in surprising places, Downtown Boulder embraces visual arts and celebrates artisans of all mediums.

Just two blocks south of the Pearl Street Mall is the Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art and just steps away there is the majestic Boulder Dushanbe Teahouse - one of the most artfully and intricately designed buildings in the world. On the center block of the Pearl Street Mall is the Boulder County Courthouse - an aweinspiring example of Art Deco architecture.

While you’re here, explore several exquisite art galleries and other handmade artistic treasures located throughout downtown.
