This public engagement project & research initiative for Downtown Austin Alliance’s cultural programs was designed by Future Front in collaboration with DAA’s Active Urbanism team to pre-emptively center the following core values: Hyperlocalism, Restorative Urbanism, Creative Community Equity, Cultural Environmentalism & Sustainability Emergent Design-Thinking and Intentional Cultural Diversity.
In response to this growth, Downtown Austin Alliance’s Active Urbanism team engaged with Future Front Texas to use the 501c3 arts and culture organization’s community design frameworks & public engagement approaches to identify impact metrics and alignments for DAA’s cultural programs and Artists & Creatives Thrive initiatives, while collectively exploring the possibility of a flagship event that centers creative communities and cultural development Downtown

As a cornerstone program for Downtown Austin’s cultural projects, Writing on the Walls celebrates art, diversity and public spaces in our city
Writing on the Walls, started in 2020 with an inaugural festival, has historically paid local artists to create public murals, as well as enhance downtown Austin’s vibe through art for all.
The Downtown Austin Alliance’s ARTBOX program creates large-impact murals on the smallest of urban canvases. Through an agreement with the City of Austin, Writing on the Walls‘ ARTBOX program provides a platform for local artists to showcase their talents and grow through painting utility box mini murals With over 800 boxes in downtown Austin, the ARTBOX program will continue to inspire and beautify for years to come
Presented by Downtown Austin in partnership with Ride Bikes Austin, Arts & Parks Tour is an annual bike ride through Downtown Austin, celebrating the art installations, murals, natural landscapes and public parks
The tour welcomes hundreds of bikers per year, accenting different stops and community partners

“Public art experiences and creative activities that speak to the human experience, conviviality beyond art on the walls... opportunities that engage the muscle memory of physically moving through urban spaces with curiosity.”
This disrupts the idea that Downtown is only new buildings and challenges cost-prohibitive ways of interacting with culture.
