Santa’s Grotto Garden Centre Grantham Opens 19th November

A REAL TREE Discover

The use of Christmas trees spread from Germany in the 17th century and Europeans now buy over 80 million a year. The average life cycle of a tree from seedling to felling is around 8 to 12 years, and, when these natural trees are harvested, there are more than ten times as many left growing! During its growing period, one hectare of trees produces up to 105 tonnes of oxygen, making them an important element in the battle against climate change.

Real Christmas trees look wonderful and continue the Christmas tradition that has been running since pagan times, and a real Christmas tree creates a pleasant scent and natural, warm beauty.

A trip out to the Downtown Garden Centre to choose your own real Christmas tree, followed by the fun of decorating back at home, is a lovely experience for all the family.

To create our stunning Winter Wishes decorative theme we’ve used an 8' Frosted Vermont Spruce tree with an incredibly realistic look and smothered it with two sets of LED compact cool white lights in 2250cm (1000L). The decoration is in a swirl – two Ontario garlands combined, wrap around the tree and then an abundance of oversized white and red floral stems, bright red and white winter berries and exquisitely embellished baubles are positioned. The mantelpiece features two swag garlands joined together, one decorated garland, decorations, and a set of LED compact cool white lights in 750cm (350L). Luckily, once you have a few key items in your cocktail cabinet most classic cocktails couldn’t be easier. No matter which spirit you like — be it gin, vodka, whiskey, or rum — there’s sure to be a cocktail that suits your fancy. If you’re not someone who enjoys spirits, then you can always go for a champagne cocktail! And many classic cocktail recipes could become mocktails if you’re going alcohol-free altogether, or have youngsters wanting a sip. This party season why not try our unusual recipe, which features unique flavours from our Food Halls.

THE BEES KNEES

Made with lemon, honey and gin, the Prohibition-era Bees Knees cocktail is easy to make and even easier to enjoy. Our version includes black pepper for a little more complexity and just enough spice – simple, sweet and sour, it’s the perfect drink. Select from our super quality gin ranges to elevate the taste

of the sweet-tart tipple. Experiment with different blends to find your favourite—classic London Dry gins (such as London Dry by Pin Gin) offer a more pronounced juniper flavour, while new gins such as The Secret Garden and Edinburgh Gin, favour floral, botanical notes. If you love honey, try Keepr’s Honey Infused Gin and for a nonalcoholic version add The Herb Garden Non-Alcoholic spirit with gin botanicals.

It’s important to use honey syrup rather than honey straight from the jar, as the syrup easily blends into the icy beverage and won’t make it too sweet. Our Artisan Honey ranges are produced here in Lincolnshire and add a real depth of flavour. 

COCKTAILS

INGREDIENTS FOR THE HONEY-PEPPER SYRUP

4 tbsp. Artisan Wild Raw honey

3 tbsp. water

½ tsp. cracked peppercorns

INGREDIENTS FOR THE COCKTAIL

60ml gin

2 tbsp. fresh lemon juice

1 tbsp. Honey-Pepper Syrup

Ground Black Pepper, for topping

INSTRUCTIONS

TO MAKE THE HONEY-PEPPER SYRUP

In a small saucepan, simmer honey, water and peppercorns until honey has dissolved. Let cool, then strain. Makes a generous amount so keep in a jar in the fridge.

INSTRUCTIONS TO MAKE THE COCKTAIL

Fill a cocktail shaker with ice and add gin, lemon juice and syrup. Shake vigorously, then strain into a glass and sprinkle with coarsely ground pepper, if desired.

It takes me ages to get to sleep – what can I do to prepare myself so I’m calmer and can go to bed ready to sleep better?

A solid wind down routine is vital –ensuring we’re preparing ourselves for sleep by getting into a relaxed state, both in mind and body, in the hour before bed is the magic ingredient for any good night’s sleep.

There are many natural sleep aids - a warm bath with essential oils or sleepinducing chamomile or valerian root tea before bed can do wonders to help the body relax and unwind before bed.

My menopausal night sweats wake me regularly, and I’m tossing and turning often waking my partner. Can bedding or pillows, or even room temperature help? It’s worth looking at your sleep environment and addressing whether this could be contributing or potentially exacerbating your sleep problems. The ideal environment for sleep is dark, cool and quiet, so in essence, your bedroom should mimic a cave. Invest in blackout blinds or an eye mask to block out light, and ensure your bedroom is slightly cooler than the rest of your home – around 18°C is ideal.

BACKDROP TO DISCOVER CHRISTMAS

With only one day earmarked to capture the multiple images needed to showcase the prestige brands and wide choice at Downtown this festive season, not every venue includes the perfect combination of indoor and outdoor locations. The Renaissance at Kelham Hall offered the best of both, so in early September (luckily a fine day), the Marketing Team from Downtown, photographer Rob Smalley of Scene Photography and their professional models created Christmas for a day at the Hall.

Claire Parker, Head of Marketing for Downtown, summarised the choice perfectly: “The Downtown Marketing

Team chose Kelham Hall for their Christmas photoshoot because the stunning location featured great outdoor spaces with greenery and sweeping vistas - perfect for wide impressive shots, stunning corners and interesting detailed backdrops for portraits, and historic interiors with a warm ambience.”

The Grade I Listed building is a midVictorian stately home set in 42 acres of formal gardens and parkland. Once a theological college, its ownership passed to Newark and Sherwood District Council before it became a wedding and events venue. The new owners and their management team are preserving and restoring the elegance of the interiors and décor, most of which is original to the construction of the building.

Stuart Downham, Managing Director at the Renaissance at Kelham Hall said: “We have taken our time to make sure that every detail and repair has been completed with the sensitivity required for a Grade 1 Listed building. Our aim is to provide an exemplary experience, be that for a conference, celebration or as a film or photoshoot location. It is a great way of people seeing how fabulous the house and grounds are looking.”

Locations used included the summerhouse close to the restored parterre garden, the grand window seats of the ground floor rooms and one of the spectacular fireplaces which have survived the changes of ownership to remain the focal points of many of the reception rooms.
