Downside Development Annual Report 2022

from the head Change is not something to which most of us are attracted. We tend to become attached to those things with which we are familiar and to cling to habits which provide us with comfort and reassurance. But without change we do not grow so, despite the pain which can often accompany it, we should always try and welcome change when people or events provide us with the opportunity. As we mourn the passing of Queen Elizabeth II, our country’s longest serving monarch, we undoubtedly feel a deep sense of loss. Her constancy and faithful devotion for over seventy years on the throne has provided us with confidence and security, but hers was a life which was able to embrace great change, founded as it was in her steadfast Christian faith. We have had our share of change here at Downside in recent times. Although the formal separation of the School and Monastery was already complete in 2019, the departure earlier this year of the Monks of the Community of St. Gregory the Great, who had been resident at Downside since 1814, has marked a moment of profound change. It has challenged our notion of stability, so fundamental in the Rule of St. Benedict and so synonymous for generations of Gregorians with the presence of the Monks here. But change also has firm roots in the Rule. Monks take the vow of ‘conversatio morum’, a commitment to be open to growth and change. Out stability, like that of the late Queen, is founded in the confidence that we are called to change in order to build and grow in our relationship with our creator.

As the Monks take time to discern their future, it has been our responsibility to renew and reassert our commitment to be a Catholic and Benedictine school with Christ at its centre. It was both humbling and encouraging to receive a letter of appreciation from a parent after Prize Day. I feel it encapsulates what makes our school distinctive and continues to attract families from across the globe to educate their children in partnership with us. I quote a small section: ‘I applaud how firmly and unapologetically you and your colleagues placed devotion, prayer and service at the heart of what you were celebrating. In my view this is radical and essential: nothing less will guide and nourish us as we all face the tumult of the world today. This is what my son needs to hear as he grows.’ My thanks and gratitude must be expressed to our whole community for continuing to support the School so generously and in so many ways, particularly during this significant time of change for Downside. Our inaugural Giving Day was testament to the breadth and diversity of those who make up our community; pupils, parents, past parents, Old Gregorians and friends alike, all in support of our areas of greatest need. We are enormously grateful for the impact you continue to make on the lives of so many children and their families, thank you. We remain firm in our commitment to St. Benedict’s instruction to seek stability through a life centred on Christ. In this way, like Queen Elizabeth, we will not have to fear change but can embrace it and grow as a result. As St. John Henry Newman reminds us, ‘to live is to change and to be perfect is to have changed often’.

The difference you make… Being a Sports Scholar at Downside School was the best thing that ever happened to me, I know I would not be where I am today without the support that was given to me. I was previously at a state school where I had just started to play rugby. I was approached by a Downside Coach during my time at Bath Academy, with the possibility of a scholarship…From that day everything changed. Receiving the Scholarship meant I had the opportunity to go to a school that not only provided me with excellent academic teaching but also the opportunity to be coached and supported in rugby like never before. The entire sporting department, including former Head of Rugby, Alex Burns, made all the difference in helping me develop my skills and character as an athlete, whilst balancing it with my studies. As a Scholar, I received a personalised training plan and individualised coaching with tailored strength and conditioning. I don’t think I would have received the same level of attention or personalised plans in another school. I will always be grateful for the opportunity I had and to everyone that has contributed to helping me sign a contract with Bath Rugby. Abdul-Khalik Akenzua Al-Kareem (S22)

One third of our pupils benefit from some level of financial assistance, with a small group receiving life-changing bursaries through the Father Laurence Bursary Fund. With the cost of living and challenging economic environment we find ourselves in, the demand for this support continues to exceed the funding we have available. In the absence of any endowment fund, we are enormously grateful to everyone who has chosen to contribute to a young person’s life, by offering the Gift of Education.

Downside has given me a passport to a whole new world ...with the opportunities and extra tuition to take my abilities to a new level.

“We’re from a low-income family – we share one ageing car between the three adults in our household, we live in a flat with no balcony or garden and the highlight of the year is our one-week family holiday to a local caravan site. We’re very happy – I’m not grumbling at all. I’m disabled and my husband has a guaranteed state pension, so we survive without starving – our faith is strong, and we love life. However, our son is gifted and talented and the chances of us giving him the opportunities befitting his talent were just not on the horizon in any shape or form. Well, that was until we met the lovely registrar from Downside. She met our son and saw his potential. We started the application process which included an audition for a scholarship. Our son wanted to achieve this so much, telling me with tears in his eyes that he had never wanted anything more in his life. He worked and practised with such determination, and we were elated when he was offered a scholarship. However, with the scholarship alone, we still couldn’t afford a place at the School. We therefore applied for a bursary… and hearing that our application was successful was one of the greatest highlights of my life – way up there with marrying my lovely husband and holding my new-born babies for the first time! My son wholeheartedly agrees! As he says in his own words”:

I’ve been thinking about where I would be now if I hadn’t come to Downside. We prayed so hard for me to come here, but Mum and Dad reminded me that it was God’s will. So, we thank God for Downside offering the scholarship and bursary. Without it, I would have gone to our local high school. The local school is alright, but the class sizes are huge and there is no way I would have been able to have the same amount of support as I have at Downside. I also think I would have struggled at our local school because I have been blessed to have a talent in a subject that they wouldn’t have been able to help me to progress very far with. I love this subject so much that I want to make it my future career and I would have felt sad and frustrated not to have been able to work on it as I do now. Downside has given me the opportunities and extra tuition to take my abilities to a whole new level. This includes participating in outside events to represent the school and taking exams at much higher levels in the subject than I ever thought I could. Downside has also helped me to build up my confidence. The teachers are helping me to use my skills and to realise that, if I work to the best of my ability, I can achieve my future goals. One day I hope to have a chance to give something back to Downside to thank them for what they are giving me. As Mum said, Downside has given me a passport to a whole new world. Thank you so much. How your support helps We are extremely humbled by the continued generosity afforded to Downside, demonstrating an extraordinary degree of loyalty from our Old Gregorians, parents current and past, alongside friends of Downside. Our donors have always shown a strong commitment in supporting bright children through the Father Laurence Bursary Fund and this year, following feedback from our benefactors, we introduced three new funds. Two were launched as part of our Giving Day; The Hardship Recovery Fund and the Historic Restoration and Renewal Fund and the third, The Sill Organ Scholarship was initiated by a generous Old Gregorian and will form part of our scholarship programme.

Father Laurance Bursary Fund The diversity of our pupils, brought together from across the globe, brings vast experiences and the merging of cultures. The sense of community and support is tangible amongst pupils, and this can only be achieved by the distinct mix of families, from all walks of life. However, not everyone has the financial means to obtain a Downside education. The Bursary Fund provides this essential financial assistance through life changing, means-tested places, which can only be possible with your help in securing the funds for the future. 4/

Historic Restoration and Renewal Fund Downside is blessed with a vast historic estate, which includes homes to our boarders, a place of education for pupils and importantly, a place of worship in the majestic Abbey Church and Old Chapel. Our beautiful buildings need restoring and renewing; from boarding houses to windows, roofs, and educational facilities. Hardship Recovery Fund The recent Covid-19 pandemic emphasised that external factors can, from time to time, have a detrimental impact on families and businesses through no fault of their own. Belonging to a vast community, grounded in its Benedictine values, means that together, we ensure our pupils and families are supported at their time of need. For example, a family may need financial support during a period of bereavement or illness to enable their child to attend a school trip, or temporary aid with school fees. This is why the Hardship Recovery Fund was created, which can offer temporary relief. Sill Organ Scholarship We have been fortunate to receive an exceptionally generous donation to launch the Sill Organ Scholarship, which will fund two Organ Scholars. The intention in endowing this award is to encourage the promotion of excellence in organ playing, both in relation to the liturgy and more widely in performance. Downside has four organs: the famous four-manual Compton organ in Downside’s Grade I listed, neo-gothic Abbey Church, a two-manual Sweetland organ in the Old Chapel, and two digital instruments. This is an exciting opportunity, and we look forward to welcoming our first Scholars. \5

AY D G N GIVI On 27th and 28th June, Downside held its inaugural Giving Day. Throughout the 36 hours we celebrated our founding year in Somerset, 1814, whilst looking to the future of the School, providing a rich and diverse environment where our pupils can thrive.

We are excited to launch the 1814 Society… An important philanthropic group that supports the School in its mission to provide a Downside education to talented pupils, whose potential is far greater than their financial circumstances. The Society provides an accessible way to support the Father Laurence Bursary Fund, changing the lives of young children. As we transition through a pivotal moment for Downside, we must build upon the foundations laid by the Community of St Gregory the Great in Somerset, 1814, whilst creating a brighter future for our pupils.

Membership of the Society begins at just £18.14 a month For the cost of just one coffee per week, your support could help a child perform on the stage of the Fleischner Theatre, debate in the Abingdon Society or fill the Abbey Church in song with the Schola Cantorum. Imagine the impact you could make by joining the 1814 Society today, knowing that your monthly donation facilitates a child’s access to a Downside education.

Why I Give My father James Grew (C48), “education can never be taken away from you”. With the financial challenges and the complexity of today’s modern world it is important that the School is able to financially support the children of OGs and worthy pupils who would benefit from a Downside education but who cannot pay the current fees or need help to make it possible.

Ways to Support Downside School Registered Charity Number: 1158507

Every donation, no matter its size, can make a huge difference

It has been so pleasing to see the generosity of OGs, parents and others over the last few years as Downside has established itself as the oldest ‘new’ school around. Our separation from Downside Abbey General Trust has meant that we very much have to stand on our own two feet, and the 1814 Society represents a way to help preserve all that is best about this very distinctive school. The Benedictine principles of building community and the stewardship of gifts are at the heart this project, as we strive to find ways to bring young people into the School who would not normally be able to benefit from what we offer. In return, we have found that these pupils contribute hugely to the School, bringing not just their talents, but also new perspectives and thinking. You will have seen the two stories about young people who talk about their experiences. We want to do much more of this. By contributing to the 1814 Society, you will be playing a direct and vital part in our ability to fund more places for pupils from very different backgrounds. The regular donations, no matter how large or small, make all the difference and allow us to plan more effectively how we can extend our support. I thank you for your contribution and urge you to ‘spread the word’!

Michael Bernard, Chair of Governors

from the abbot 2022 will of course be remembered as the year that the monastic community of St Gregory the Great moved away from their Downside home of 208 years. This was of course sad in many and different ways and whilst the future remains uncertain, the monks moved with every intention of rebuilding and rediscovering their Benedictine lives and mission. Our temporary move to Southgate House in the grounds of Buckfast Abbey will provide the space and monastic environment to continue that discernment. In an ideal world our final Mass of thanksgiving on 12th March, the feast of St Gregory, would have been a celebration with as many of our friends and benefactors as possible. I apologise to those who would have very much liked to have been with us on that day. Partly because of the aftermath of Covid-19 but also because of the poignancy of the occasion we decided to reduce the numbers and only invite representatives from among our many friends, staff, benefactors, OGs, oblates, and Benedictine and local clergy. It was also important for us that the School were present. It was a wonderfully moving occasion, low key in some ways, reflecting the reality of the day, but a service very much of thanksgiving to God and to those who have supported the community for the last two centuries in this particular home.

The Community of St Gregory have moved before of course. When they were founded in Douai in 1606, then part of the Spanish Netherlands, there were few expectations that the community would move to England. Missionary monks were sent over to work, and often die, in England and Wales. However, in 1794 they were forced by the French Revolution to seek a temporary home at Acton Burnell Hall in Shropshire, probably expecting to return to Douai in quieter times. Of course, that never happened, and the Community instead settled at Downside in 1814. Our move to Southgate House, another temporary home, will be our fourth home in 416 years. It is our plan to spend the short time here rebuilding our community life, our monastic witness and identifying our new pastoral mission within the Church. In the meantime, the Trust staff continue to function from Downside Abbey. The Abbey Church is of course open and visited by many people, whilst still being used by the School. It remains a wonderful (if costly) heritage asset which, with your support, we are committed to caring for by working with the many different heritage bodies, seeking their guidance, and seeking donations and important funding grants towards the maintenance of this fine and important grade 1 building. Some of you will have been aware of the different events that have taken place in and around the refurbished Visitor Centre in recent months and the concerts organised in the Abbey Church. The library and important archive collection have re-opened too, and our volunteers are working with us and our small,

the Petre Society As we reflect on the long-lasting effects of Covid-19, it has led many of us to consider our own mortality and how we plan to support our loved ones after we are gone and updating our charitable intentions. We appreciate that friends and family must be your initial priority, making any pledge to Downside even more meaningful. We are extremely grateful to have received new legacy pledges this year and look forward to welcoming you to the Petre Society Lunch to thank you in person for your generosity. Even a small residential gift can make a huge difference to the lives of our next generation and as a gift left in your Will is exempt from Inheritance Tax, it has the potential to reduce the tax burden on your family too. Furthermore, a gift of 10% of your estate is not only exempt, but it also reduces the tax liability on your whole estate from 40% to 36%.

It was a delight to welcome our Petre Society Members back to Downside for an intimate discussion with the Head and Abbot surrounding the future and direction of the School and Monastic Community followed by a delicious lunch with the Monastic Community.
