The 1814 Society
Named after our founding year in Somerset, Members of the 1814 Society form an important philanthropic group that supports the School in its mission to provide a Downside education to talented pupils, whose potential is far greater than their financial circumstances.
The Society offers an accessible way to support the Father Laurence Bursary Fund through regular donations, changing the lives of young children and future Old Gregorians..
Together we can achieve so much more...
Imagine the impact you could make by joining the 1814 Society today, knowing that your regular donation facilitates a child’s access to a Downside education.
DID YOU KNOW
One in three pupils receive meanstested bursary support. Half of these receive more than 50% bursary.
I’ve been thinking about where I would be now if I hadn’t come to Downside. We prayed so hard for me to come here, but Mum and Dad reminded me that it was God’s will. So, we thank God for Downside offering the scholarship and bursary… Downside has given me the opportunities and extra tuition to take my abilities to a whole new level.”

The Vision
The long-term vision is that each year, the 1814 Society can provide seven fully funded transformational bursary places, enabling one child in each Form to receive a Downside education.
To bring this vision into reality, we are seeking collaborative support from our Old Gregorians, parents, past and present, and friends of Downside.

Make your donation tax-efficient
As an international donor, you may prefer to join the 1814 Society by donating annually or quarterly rather than monthly, to simplify the donation process.
Donations can be made directly to the School online, or through an international provider, such as the BSUF for our US donors or Transnational Giving for donors in Europe.
I needed to go there.
I have been very lucky to receive financial help with my school education to attend Downside this year.
My mother phoned up and began the admissions process after seeing how much I wanted to go to Downside and decided she was going to make this dream of mine come true. We applied for a bursary and knew we would figure out a way to make my goal of attending Downside School happen, no matter what
After completing the entrance exam, and interview, I was awarded a bursary and a place at the School. We were overjoyed with the news. My mum has been working so hard to provide for me, and I am forever grateful to her for never giving up.
None of this would be possible for me without the wonderful people who donate towards the Bursary Fund. You’ve all changed my life, and I’m so happy and grateful to all of you and my mother for making this opportunity possible. Thank you. ”
