WEDNESDAY 10TH APRIL MORNING PAPER 1

This session will be an opportunity to review the concepts and key words for Paper 1, with a particular emphasis on the fetch execute cycle, networking and network security, and data storage, including number systems, Boolean logic and compression. The course is delivered actively, to support memorisation of key words and techniques, and we will study past exam questions in detail to explore how to get the best from each question. The session will begin with an overview of the basics, essentials, assessment objectives, and where students typically lose marks in the exams, and how you can maximise your marks.

WEDNESDAY 10TH APRIL AFTERNOON PAPER 2

8

The second paper focuses on programming, and this session will be a chance to fine tune your understanding of programming and development. Key features of the course are: Development life cycle and good development practices, databases, and key algorithms. This is a practical, interactive course to explore and build working programs, with a close focus on past question papers and exam technique to ensure you get the very best from each question. We will focus on Python but support other languages.

Edexcel IGCSE

WEDNESDAY 10TH APRIL AFTERNOON English Literature PAPER 1: Unseen Poetry

You will write two responses to poetry in your IGCSE exam, one on a poem you have studied and one on a poem you are seeing for the first time. This session will focus on the Unseen question, looking at how to read a poem first for meaning and general effect, and then to study how effect is created through the poet's choices of language and structure. You will revise a selection of technical terms to apply when analysing how effect is created, and how to structure a response to ensure that your writing is efficient and focussed.

THURSDAY 11TH APRIL AFTERNOON English Language PAPER 1: Transactional Writing

This session will look at the main kinds of text type which you could be asked to write in the exam: speech, letter and article. You will study what is (and isn't) required in each form, consider the expectations of your audience/reader, and revise techniques for structuring your response in a powerful and compelling way.

SCHOLARSHIPS

At Downside, we seek to encourage and nurture excellence through our Scholarship Awards, and for these awards to be funded by a financial package to enable pupils to come to the school who, without the assistance of a scholarship, would not be able to do so. As a guide, scholarships are generally worth between 5% and 10% of the fees, or carry music and art lessons. This financial award may be enhanced by a means-tested bursary if parents are able to demonstrate, through application, that they could not otherwise send their child to the school. Applications should be made by mid-October whilst in Fifth Form (Year 11), with Assessment Days taking place in the November. Pupils must be registered at the time of Scholarship and Bursary application.

A P P L I C AT I O N TO J O I N OUR SIXTH FORM How to apply

Pupils are required to register, by returning the Registration Form and £100 fee, at least 8 to 12 months ahead of entry date. Pupils will be required to complete entrance papers in the subjects they wish to study at A level if they wish to receive an unconditional offer. Alternatively, conditional offers will be made through a satisfactory school reference and predicted A level grades. For all pupils, a reference will be sought from the candidate’s current school. For those pupils who do not have English as their first language, there is an additional EAL test.

What then?

Successful completion of the entry tests will be followed by an offer of a guaranteed (unconditional) place at Downside. In order to accept our offer and secure a place at the School, we require parents to sign a parental contract and to make a deposit payment. The deposit is then held by the School until the payment of the final bill on leaving Downside School.
