Due to the Great Depression, no pennies were struck in Australia in 1930 – or so it was thought. It is now accepted that the Melbourne Mint produced perhaps 3,000 coins in die testing, with these coins released into circulation with a later penny issue in satisfaction of a Commonwealth order. As a result, the 1930 Penny is extremely rare in any grade.
