SUCCESS STORY
In preparation for the heavy rains that Los Angeles County experienced in February, the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) activated emergency motel vouchers for unhoused individuals who faced an increased risk of harm. Case managers in Downey had been building rapport with a client who was staying under a gazebo in Apollo Park and worried about her health in the inclement weather (Continued on page 3).
Case managers have focused on engaging potential clients living under the gazebos at Apollo Park and in vehicles around businesses along Firestone Boulevard. Teams also partnered with Downey Police Officers to assist with an encampment clean-up around the 105 underpass. City Net collaborated with the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority (LAHSA) to provide clients with emergency motel vouchers.
SUCCESS STORIES
(Continued from page 1) She had already reported being medically vulnerable, and the severe weather posed a serious health risk to her should she continue sleeping outside. The team was quick to advocate for her motel placement, and only an hour after submitting the referral, case managers received confirmation that she had been matched to a motel voucher in Pico Rivera The team provided transportation for the client and her beloved pet cat to the motel, where they helped her bring in her belongings. Safely out of the cold, she thanked the team for their quick help in obtaining temporary shelter just before a week of heavy rainfall arrived
• A client contacted the case manager with concerns after his new employer requested a certified copy of his birth certificate as a condition of continued employment. He was given a limited timeframe to provide the documentation, but no support to complete the task. Case managers promptly responded to his request and scheduled an appointment for the day after his call. City Net provided a fee waiver and arranged transportation to and from the office to ensure that the client faced no barriers to attending the appointment as scheduled. Thanks to their intervention, the client obtained a certified copy of his birth certificate, allowing him to submit it to his employer soon after and maintain his employment. During his follow-up with his case managers, the client expressed how scared he had been of losing his job, and it was the team's prompt response and thorough case management that allowed him to submit his birth certificate and rest assured that he would remain employed.
