FOCUS XXII

Page 1

Dear Friends,

As another school year comes to a close, I’m proud to share with you some highlights and recent accomplishments of our students.

First and foremost, I would like to congratulate the Class of 2025. These graduates have demonstrated remarkable growth and leadership throughout their time at Dowling Catholic. They lived out their faith in meaningful ways, collectively serving nearly 21,000 hours of Christian service this year alone and more than 60,000 over their four years at DCHS. They also excelled academically, earning nearly $11.2 million in scholarships to colleges across the country. We look forward to following their success wherever their future endeavors may take them.

We had the opportunity to recognize many of these graduates during our Scholastic Achievement Assembly, details of which you’ll find in the pages ahead. We also recognized faculty and staff members for their years of service and with other special awards and were able to honor our retiring teachers. I am grateful for the dedication and tremendous contributions from Nancy Holsapple and Diane Thierer and wish them all the best in retirement.

This spring was filled with exceptional achievements across many areas. Our students delivered outstanding performances in band, choir and theater, including an award-winning spring musical, and also enjoyed success in athletics, speech and debate, and academics. Notable accomplishments include a strong performance at the Academic Decathlon national competition and an impressive number of students earning the Seal of Biliteracy to name a few. I’m grateful to our dedicated faculty and staff whose hard work and commitment help make these successes possible for our students.

Looking to the future, I am pleased to share exciting news. This fall, we will kick off the Honoring Our History, Faith in Our Future Capital Campaign, our most ambitious fundraising effort to date. The campaign will focus on long-overdue improvements to enhance safety, student life and athletics by modernizing some of the oldest parts of our campus.

We are deeply grateful to Jim ’62 and Patty ’62 Cownie whose generosity and unwavering support of Catholic education continue to shape our community. As Cornerstone Chairs of the campaign, they have established the foundation for this historic effort with the largest single gift in school history. With their support, the Cownies are ensuring that future generations of Maroons will have the same opportunities and strong foundation that helped shape their own lives. You can read more about their incredible legacy and additional campaign details in this publication.

Thank you for your continued support and partnership. Your belief in our mission makes all of this possible.

In Christ,

CHARLIE

At Dowling Catholic High School, we live out our mission each day by preparing Leaders for Life, Centered on Christ. Today, we’re proud to introduce a new name for our Annual Appeal that reflects that mission at its core —

The Maroon Fund represents more than a name change. It’s a renewed commitment to supporting every Maroon, every day. Whether in the classroom, on retreat, or simply walking our halls, every student at Dowling Catholic benefits from this vital fund.

This fund makes the Dowling Catholic experience possible and sets our students apart in faith, academics, and community.

What Does The Maroon Fund Support?

The Maroon Fund strengthens three essential pillars that uphold the Dowling Catholic experience:

Academic Excellence

Academic excellence is a cornerstone of Dowling Catholic’s mission. Contributions to the Maroon Fund directly support curriculum advancements, faculty development, technology integration, and innovative programs that prepare students to achieve their highest potential. By investing in this pillar, you ensure that Dowling Catholic remains a leader in academic achievement and continues to equip students with the knowledge and skills they need for lifelong success.

From advanced placement courses to STEM initiatives, gifts drive innovation and academic rigor. They also ensure our teachers have the tools and training necessary to lead in and out of the classroom.

Student & Faith Life

At Dowling Catholic, faith isn’t just something we teach, it’s something we live. It’s woven into everything we do, shaping students spiritually, personally, and morally. Gifts to the Maroon Fund make this possible by supporting retreats, service opportunities, leadership programs, and spiritual formation. These experiences inspire students to live out their Catholic values each day.

These opportunities strengthen faith, build character, and foster a lifelong commitment to service. By supporting this pillar, you help form well-rounded individuals who lead with integrity, compassion, and a strong sense of purpose.

School Services

A safe, supportive, and well-equipped learning environment is essential to student success. Contributions to the Maroon Fund help provide campus and grounds enhancements, security measures, student counseling, and health services. These resources ensure students can focus on their education in an environment that prioritizes their well-being. This reinforces Dowling Catholic’s dedication to student development, leadership, and a culture of excellence.

This pillar may not always be visible from the outside, but its impact is felt by every student, every day. Whether it’s the comforting presence of a trusted counselor, the peace of mind that comes with a secure campus, or the calm of well-maintained spaces, these resources create a foundation where students can thrive academically, socially and spiritually.

The Heart of the Maroon Fund

The Maroon Fund is more than a donation. It’s an investment in the mission of Dowling Catholic and in the lives of young people who are being formed to lead with faith, integrity and purpose.

It’s also a powerful reminder that behind every retreat, every test taken, every student-led prayer, and every moment of growth, there’s someone like you who made it possible.

Your generosity lights the path for our students and we are deeply grateful for your continued support. Please consider making a gift to the Maroon Fund today by using the enclosed envelope, visiting www.dowlingcatholic.org/maroonfund, or scanning the QR code.

A Legacy of Gratitude and Giving .....................

For Joan Higgins Wagner ‘57, supporting Dowling Catholic High School is more than an act of philanthropy - it’s a reflection of deep gratitude and a desire to give back to the institution that helped shape her. An alumna of Saint Joseph Academy, Wagner’s support began not long after graduation and her commitment has only grown stronger over time.

Her approach to giving is both heartfelt and strategic. After a neighbor introduced her to Charitable Gift Annuities (CGAs), Wagner saw a unique opportunity to give back while supporting her own financial goals. By leveraging appreciated stock through a CGA, she was able to reduce her taxable income and secure fixed annual payments for life.

“It seemed like a no-brainer,” Wagner said. “It’s a blend of philanthropy and financial planning.”

Now retired from a career as a financial advisor, Wagner finds joy in knowing that her contributions will have a lasting impact. She hopes to inspire others to consider similar gifts and to leave their own mark on Dowling Catholic’s enduring legacy.

Reflecting on her own experience as a student at St. Joseph Academy, Wagner is filled with nostalgia and pride. She describes her time at school as “more than just an education,” crediting it with instilling values such as faith, loyalty, service, integrity, and perseverance, principles that have shaped her character and guided her throughout her life. Her story is a reminder that the Dowling Catholic legacy lives on not only in the students of today, but in the generosity of those it inspired decades ago.

“We want students to develop critical thinking and problem solving skills. STEM education really pushes students in that direction.”

JOAN HIGGINS WAGNER ‘57

On Saturday, April 12th, the Dowling Catholic community came together for an incredible evening at the Bash on Buffalo — our biggest celebration of the year!

Guests enjoyed a night full of energy, including a silent auction with both in-person and remote bidding, an exciting live auction, delicious food, signature cocktails, a raffle, and more. It was truly a night to remember, filled with fun, fellowship and generosity!

Thanks to the amazing support of our community, we raised $145,000 to benefit the STEM Endowment and provide critical enhancements to our science, technology, engineering, and math programs. These programs play a key role in preparing our students for college and future careers, helping them grow as thinkers, problemsolvers, creators and collaborators.

In the same spirit of service that extends from campus and beyond, the Bash on Buffalo brought together board members, parents, faculty and staff to support the mission of Dowling Catholic and its students. Thanks to the hard work of the event committee and the generosity of our community, the evening was a true celebration of the legacy that continues to shape DCHS. A heartfelt thank you goes to the dedicated Bash

TFrom Students to Stewards:

Jim and Patty Cownie’s $10 Million Gift and the Power of Giving Back
“We’ve seen how Dowling Catholic nurtures its students. Not just academically, but in discipline, values and opportunity. We believe in it.”

his fall, Dowling Catholic High School will kick off its most ambitious fundraising effort to date: the Honoring Our History, Faith in Our Future Capital Campaign. Focused on long-overdue improvements to safety, student life and athletics, the campaign will bring much of the oldest parts of our campus into the 21st century.

Plans include a new student union, a single secure student entrance, expanded parking, updated kitchen and dining area, additional practice and competition spaces, new locker rooms, and a roomier space for all-school Masses and pep rallies. These projects reflect our ongoing commitment to providing an exceptional learning environment for every student.

While Dowling Catholic’s leadership has been hard at work refining these projects, campaign strategy and fundraising goals, a small group of donors has already stepped forward to create a foundation for this historic effort.

At the heart of it is one transformative gift that stands out for its size and the legacy it reflects.

Jim ‘62 and Patty ‘62 Cownie are longtime supporters of Catholic education, pillars of the Des Moines community and Cornerstone Chairs for the Honoring Our History, Faith in Our Future

Campaign. They have committed a $10 million gift to the effort – the largest single gift in Dowling Catholic’s history and a bold vote of confidence in the school’s future.

For Jim Cownie, the gift is deeply personal.

“My relationship to Dowling began formally in 1958, and it ended up being the best four years of my life.”

Those formative years shaped Jim as a student, athlete and leader. He served as student body president, played every sport he could and built friendships that have lasted a lifetime. “It built self-esteem and confidence,” he said. “I’ll never forget it.”

Dowling also introduced Jim to his wife, Patty (Hines) Cownie, who attended St. Joseph Academy. The two met as freshmen, thanks to meddling from Patty’s best friend, and began a lifelong partnership rooted in faith, family and community.

The Cownies’ relationship with Dowling Catholic has only deepened over the decades. All nine of their children are alumni, and now their grandchildren are Maroons as well.

Campaign Kick-Off

Friday, Sept. 26 at the Homecoming Game

In the months following the kick-off, all Maroons will be invited to participate in the campaign. Keep an eye out for a mailing or an email to learn more about the projects, goals and ways you can support this transformative effort.

Interested in getting involved?

We are looking for volunteers. Please reach out to our campaign manager, Beth Samson, at bsamson@steiergroup.com.

“We’ve seen how Dowling Catholic nurtures its students,” Jim said. “Not just academically, but in discipline, values and opportunity. We believe in it.”

The Cownies’ generosity stems from gratitude for what Dowling Catholic has given them, as well as a sense of responsibility.

“We stayed in Des Moines because we love Des Moines,” Jim said. “We built a business here, and we’ve been blessed. We had good fortune and we learned – thanks to people like Bill Knapp –how to give it away.”

Jim and Patty see their gift not as a one-time gesture, but as part of a tradition of generosity. “We’ve been motivated by the behavior of others who give generously of their time and their money,” he said. “We’re happy to be one of those families.”

Jim also understands the importance of a strong lead gift for a campaign of this magnitude.

“Patty and I decided we were going to do something we’ve never done before – and we’re happy to do it for a place that has meant so much to us.”

He’s confident in the vision guiding the campaign.

“I trust Dan Ryan and the board. The thinking has been clear and good. We want to see Dowling Catholic continue to prosper and do the job it’s been able to do for students for a long time in the future.”

His advice for current and future DCHS students?

“Stay busy,” he said without hesitation. “There are a huge number of extracurricular activities offered. That’s what I tell my grandkids. Take advantage of the opportunities, stay busy and life is better.”

Through the Honoring Our History, Faith in Our Future Campaign, the Cownies are ensuring that future generations of Maroons will have the same opportunities – and strong foundation – that shaped their lives. Their extraordinary gift honors the past while powerfully investing in the next chapter of Dowling Catholic’s story.

And for Jim and Patty Cownie, it’s simple.

“Dowling has been important to us,” Jim said. “It’s time to give back.”

Soon, Dowling Catholic will turn to the entire Maroon community to build on the foundation that Jim and Patty Cownie have so generously set. Further details of the campaign projects and fundraising goal will be announced this fall.

The Dowling Catholic Performing Arts Department impressed audiences this spring with its vibrant production of Shrek The Musical. With sold-out shows, a highlight was the special matinee performance for more than 400 local parochial school students before opening night, offering younger audiences a preview of the talent and dedication that defines the DCHS performing arts program.

With a cast, crew and pit band of 65 students, the production was one of the largest ever staged at DCHS. It was a challenge that the department embraced with creativity, dedication and strong community support.

“It was a HUGE show,” said Sarah Raymond, director of the DCHS Performing Arts Department. “We had never done a show with this many costumes, this kind of makeup, or this many kids. It was a lot, but our well-

organized team made it run as smoothly as it could have! I really am thankful that we have a strong theater community here at Dowling Catholic. Having so many people invested in our art makes a world of difference.”

That support includes parent volunteers who provided meals, snacks and backstage help throughout the rehearsal process which began in February.

Contributing to the dynamic cast were four DCHS faculty and staff members, several of whom brought personal experience in the performing arts to their roles.

“We love including faculty and staff when we can,” said Raymond. “It really shows that you can keep performing even after you graduate. When students see adults still using their God-given talents to perform, it inspires them to do the same.”

“We had never done a show with this many costumes, this kind of makeup, or this many kids. It was a lot, but our well-organized team made it run as smoothly as it could have! I really am thankful that we have a strong theater community here at Dowling Catholic. Having so many people invested in our art makes a world of difference.”

The production earned recognition from the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards, a program of Des Moines Performing Arts that celebrates the extraordinary achievements of Iowa students involved in high school musical theater.

Dowling Catholic received a Distinguished Scene Award, and several cast members were honored for individual excellence. Receiving recognition for Outstanding Achievement in a Principal Role were Elizabeth James as Fiona, Ben Hall as Donkey, and Colin Heaston as Shrek. Special Recognition in a Principal Role was awarded to James Martin as Lord Farquaad, and Jacqueline James in multiple roles, including Peter Pan, Duloc Dancer, Skeleton, Sunflower, Rat and Blind Mouse.

Raymond and Quinn Tipping ‘09, director of choral music, selected Shrek to showcase the wide range of talent at DCHS.

“It was a great way to let voices be heard, both veteran performers and newcomers,” said Raymond.

Among the standout veterans was Colin Heaston ’25, who took on his first lead role as Shrek after previous ensemble performances in The Music Man, Guys and Dolls, and Newsies

“Playing Shrek was an incredible experience,” said Heaston. “I had so much fun crafting the character and performing with my peers. I’m extremely grateful, and I know it’s a memory I’ll cherish for years to come.”

The spring musical is one of three annual productions by the Dowling Catholic Performing Arts Department. Save the date for the fall play which will be presented October 31 – November 2, 2025.

Habemus Papam!

Viewing the conclave at Dowling Catholic generated a beautiful and electrifying tension within the school. Teachers and students tuned into Smartboard screenings and smartphone livestreams to see the white smoke billow from the Sistine Chapel. Upon the election of Pope Leo, nearly every student from the choir classroom to the weight room stopped their activities to take in the first words of our Holy Father: “Peace be with you all.” It was truly special to witness this peace permeate in every person in our building. That memory will stay with me for some time.

A Lasting Tribute on the National Stage

In June, Des Moines proudly welcomed the National Speech and Debate Tournament for the second consecutive year, an event made even more meaningful as the National Speech and Debate Association marked its 100th anniversary. With more than 10,000 attendees from across the country, this centennial celebration placed our city at the heart of a historic milestone.

Dowling Catholic High School was honored to be represented on this national stage by seven exceptional students: Maddy Beauchamp, Haley South, Cesar DuranOropeza, Sam Raymond, Hannah Kirst, Olivia Kruger and Jacqueline James.

This year’s tournament held special significance for the DCHS community with the naming of the national stage in memory of beloved coach and mentor, Mr. Tim Sheaff ‘86. A guiding force in speech, debate and drama, Mr. Sheaff inspired generations of students with his passion, integrity and unwavering support. Following his passing in 2023, the Tim Sheaff Speech, Debate and Drama Endowment was established to honor his legacy and ensure that future students continue to benefit from the opportunities he championed.

The 2024-2025 speech and debate season was filled with achievement for DCHS. The team competed in 21 tournaments across four states with over 60 students participating,16 of whom became first-time members of the National Speech and Debate Association. Dowling Catholic finished the season as the top-ranked speech and debate team in Iowa, earned state runner-up in speech, and third place in debate. The team also hosted six competitions, including the Dowling Catholic Paradigm, which welcomed more than 50 teams from eight states.

Mr. Sheaff’s enduring influence was felt throughout the year - in every round, every rehearsal, and every performance. To support this legacy of excellence and help sustain the program he loved, gifts can be made to the Tim Sheaff Endowment. To learn more, please visit www.dowlingcatholic.org/debate.

Iowa Seal of Biliteracy

The DCHS World Language Department is proud to announce that 86 students have earned the 2025 Iowa Seal of Biliteracy this spring—the highest number in school history.

This year students earned the Seal in French, German, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish and Ukrainian. To earn the Seal, students must demonstrate proficiency in both English and another language through a rigorous examination process assessing speaking, reading, writing and listening.

DCHS Scholars Excel on National Stage

Five exceptional students represented Dowling Catholic High School at the 2025 United States Academic Decathlon National Finals held May 1-3 at the Community Choice Convention Center in downtown Des Moines. This marked the first time in 35 years that Des Moines has hosted the prestigious competition. Seniors Jacob Suresh and Fernando Konrad Parras, juniors Carson Klein and Max Fazio, and sophomore Cora Volp qualified individually and were among approximately 700 of the nation’s most accomplished high school scholars competing on the national stage.

Carson Klein delivered an exceptional performance, earning the title of National Champion in Literature, a Bronze Medal in Art, fifth place overall individually, and several additional top-ten finishes across multiple subjects. Fernando Konrad Parras and Jacob Suresh also distinguished themselves with top-ten placements in various categories, an extraordinary achievement on a national level.

The team was led by Ms. Kasey Tickel, who has coached the Academic Decathlon teams at DCHS for the last 13 years, and Mrs. Brenda Sullivan who has coached for the last two.

We celebrate and commend these students for their hard work, dedication and commitment to academic excellence. Congratulations on these remarkable achievements!

Notably, junior Sofiya Pollard earned the Seal in three languages: Russian, Spanish and Ukrainian. Seniors Magdalena Bubar and Isabelle Colon Alba each earned the Seal in two languages—French and German for Magdalena, and French and Spanish for Isabelle.

The State of Iowa awards the Seal of Biliteracy “to value language as an asset, to recognize the value of language diversity and cultural identity, and to prepare students with 21st century skills that will benefit them in the labor market and the global society.”

DCHS Girls Tennis Serves Up a Standout Season

The Dowling Catholic girls tennis team wrapped up an impressive season with several standout performances at the state tournament and a strong team showing throughout the spring.

Seniors Grace Frye and Juju Mauro repeated as state doubles champions, defeating Waukee Northwest in the final. The duo has compiled a remarkable 30-1 record over the past two seasons and leaves a legacy with back-to-back titles.

Payton Blume and Mady Pierron also had a strong showing, finishing fourth in doubles at state. Their tournament run included one of the weekend’s biggest upsets as they defeated the No. 2 seeds from Waterloo West in the quarterfinals.

Victoria Bakros earned a sixth-place finish, earning wins against players from Centennial, Waterloo West and Johnston.

As a team, DCHS finished the season with a 13-3 record and as state runner up, falling to Waukee Northwest in the final. Team members included Grace Frye, Juju Mauro, Victoria Bakros, Ella Johnson, Payton Blume, Mady Pierron, Elizabeth Claypool, Victoria Valverde, Mady Rice and Hannah Murphy.

The team was led by head coach Aaron Chalstrom, with assistant coaches Matt Seidl ‘09 and Jacqueline Pose ‘16, both DCHS alumni.

“This spring has been an incredible journey for this group,” said Chalstrom. “They’re close-knit, supportive, and just enjoy being together. Finishing second as a team and having all five individual qualifiers place at state is something we’re really proud of. While the wins are great, the team will probably remember the road trips, meals, and time spent together even more.”

National Merit Finalists

Dowling Catholic High School is proud to recognize Max Piazza ‘25 and Jacob Suresh ‘25 for achieving the distinguished honor of being named finalists in the 2025 National Merit Scholarship Program.

This recognition places them among the top academic achievers in the country. Each year, approximately 1.5 million students enter the program by taking the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/ NMSQT). Of those, only about 15,000 are named finalists, and ultimately, around 7,250 students—representing just the top 0.5% of applicants nationwide—are selected to receive National Merit Scholarships.

Congratulations to Max and Jacob on this outstanding academic achievement!

The annual DCHS athletic department reunion breakfast took place on Saturday, May 17 with several alumni, former coaches and staff members in attendance. The event was started in 2010 by Coach Ron Gray ‘73 and longtime DCHS athletic trainer, Del Lark. Pictured left to right: Mike Skoglund, Don Mauro ‘79, Jeff Morris ‘78, Fr. Congratulations to Dr. Emily Glaser Rossin ‘08 who was inducted into the Dowling Catholic High School Performing Arts Hall of Fame on Saturday, May 3, 2025. A standout all-state clarinet player and drum major during her time at DCHS, Dr. Rossin went on to earn her Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Ph.D. in Music Education from the University of Kansas. Before pursuing her doctorate, she taught music at all grade levels, including undergraduate courses.

An active researcher and presenter at both national and regional conferences, Dr. Rossin’s work has been featured in the Journal of Research in Music Education and Music and Science. As a dedicated member of NAfME and a clarinetist with the Crossroads Wind Symphony, she continues to inspire through her teaching, research, and unwavering passion for music.

We are proud to recognize our alumni who are current and future FOCUS missionaries, individuals who work for the “Fellowship of Catholic University Students” and are dedicated to inspiring and equipping Catholic college students across the country to live out their faith on campus. Missionaries lead Bible studies and develop life-long friendships with students to help them foster their own journeys of discipleship with Jesus. Future missionaries will go to training at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln or Ave Maria University and learn their campus assignments this summer.

Current missionaries include Kayla Hartman ‘19 (University of Akron) and Julia Hejkal ‘19 (University of Missouri). Future missionaries are Kelsey Hoey ‘21, Jessie Vedane ‘20, Griffin Rhode ‘20 and Mary Kate Melcher ‘22 To learn more, visit focus.org.

Teagan Kavan ‘23, a pitcher for the University of Texas, made history as she led her team to their first national championship. The Longhorns defeated Texas Tech in the championship game in Oklahoma City on Friday, June 6, 2025.

Kavan was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2025 Women’s College World Series after a dominant performance where she pitched 31.2 innings for the Longhorns while giving up zero earned runs, alongside her 21 strikeouts in the tournament. Kavan’s 31.2 innings without allowing an earned run is a WCWS record. She finishes her sophomore season with a record of 28-5, a 2.16 ERA, and 230 strikeouts.

Each year Dowling Catholic proudly honors deserving alumni of St. Joseph Academy and DCHS with Distinguished Alumni and Distinguished Young Alumni awards. We are honored to recognize our 2025 recipients, Rick DeBartolo ‘81, Ty Flood ‘11 and Elizabeth Merchut ‘10.

Rick DeBartolo attended St. Pius X elementary school and graduated from Dowling Catholic High School in 1981. During his time at Dowling, he became a two-time state wrestling champion under Coach Darrah, a High School All-American and the Iowa Freestyle State Champion in 1981. Most importantly, he established a strong foundation that would later influence his roles in the church, his family, his career, and all other walks of life.

Following his graduation from the University of Iowa, he became an assistant wrestling coach for Dowling Catholic, pursued a career in the insurance industry, and met his wife, Rita, who he has been married to for 30 years. Rick and Rita have three children - Ricky ’12, Sammy ’14, and Tony ‘17, whom he provided with the same Catholic education experience by sending them to St. Pius X and Dowling Catholic.

Rick has always maintained a balanced lifestyle with his demanding career and family life. His family fondly remembers him always showing up for sporting and academic events and ensuring he was always at the end of the dinner table. He has inspired each son to chase their dreams, from law school to golf. He believes in each of his children and serves as an example that hard work and faith lead to greatness.

The spirit of Dowling Catholic is exemplified in Rick’s professional life. He has been the leader of the Employee Benefits department, a shareholder, and a senior vice president at LMC for 30 years. He has used this position to mentor young adults, many of whom are DCHS graduates. During his career, Rick played a role in LMC’s merger with the 10th largest insurance agency in the country, Assured Partners.

Rick has been involved in various charitable organizations and supports Iowa Catholic Radio, Christ our Life, Catholic Charities, and the Dowling Catholic Legacy fund. He has served on the Board of Education at St. Pius, on the Dowling Catholic Foundation Board, as a member of the Diocesan Finance Council and as the Chairman of the Strategic Planning Committee to renovate St. Pius X Church. His most impactful experience was serving the homeless in Des Moines through Joppa and recruiting family and friends to work alongside him to make a difference in the community through this organization.

What he remembers most about his experiences at DCHS is winning back-to-back state championships in 1980 and 1981. He is thankful for the great coaches and teachers that inspired him to be the best person he could be and pushed him to limits that he would not have achieved without their inspiration. Coaches Bob Darrah, Ron Gray and Mike Skoglund were all great coaches and friends. He loved the enthusiasm at Dowling for students’ athletic and educational achievements. He made great friends that today remain some of his best friends. He is grateful for the Dowling Catholic community that is so unique and special.

In addition to his recognition as a Distinguished Alumni, Rick is also a member of Dowling Catholic’s Athletic Hall of Fame.

Ty Flood is a living embodiment of a Dowling Catholic graduate - one who is truly a Leader for Life, Centered on Christ. As a student at DCHS, Ty learned servant leadership in the halls among his peers and athletic arenas alongside his teammates. In his senior year, Ty was selected to be homecoming king, captain of the wrestling team, captain of the rugby team, and captain of football team where he contributed to Coach Tom Wilson’s first ever state championship in 2010. As a wrestler, Ty placed eighth in the Class 3A State Tournament.

Following graduation he pursued a business degree at the University of Northern Iowa. While attending the university, he was active in the Catholic Student Center attending weekly Mass and benefitting from the spiritual guidance of the university’s priest chaplain. Upon graduation, he integrated into the St. John’s Basilica parish community in Des Moines where he currently attends with his high school sweetheart, Cecilia (Shedenhelm) Flood ‘11, and his four young children, Rutledge (Class of 2035), Coy (Class of 2036), Pax (Class of 2037), and Belle (Class of 2038).

Ty supports Dowling Catholic through his dedication to leading Ut Fidem groups for the past eight years and coaching youth wrestling for the Maroon Mat Club for the past three years. He seeks to integrate his Catholic faith into his workplace at Holmes Murphy of Des Moines where he meets weekly with his colleagues in a faith centered men’s group. He has shown servant leadership to the greater Des Moines area through his involvement in Big Brothers Big Sisters and Rotary Club. Beginning in 2019, Ty began raising funds on the Gala Committee for Innervisions HealthCare, a medical center that provides support for young men and women facing unplanned pregnancies.

He seeks to strengthen his vocation as a husband by being a regular participant in the Catholic married couples group “Teams of Our Lady.” He seeks to strengthen his vocation as a father by his involvement in The Troops of St. George, a Catholic apostolate where fathers and their sons together seek lives of beauty, virtue, and adventure through monthly campouts.

What he remembers most about his experience at DCHS is the camaraderie and brotherhood built on the football field, wrestling mat, and locker room. Dowling Catholic is also where he met his future wife and mother of his children.

Elizabeth Merchut is a 2010 graduate of Dowling Catholic High School where she graduated summa cum laude. During her time at Dowling Catholic, she was actively involved in many facets of student life. She served as a drum major of the marching band, team captain of the mock trial team, officer of student ambassadors, and was a member of the National Honor Society. She also

participated in band, school musicals, and various academic and service activities that helped shape her commitment to leadership and community.

Elizabeth went on to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Visual Communications with a minor in Spanish from Truman State University, graduating with Departmental Honors and receiving the Outstanding Student Award in her program. While at Truman, she was awarded several scholarships, including the President’s Leadership, Honorary, and Combined Ability Scholarships. She served in multiple leadership roles within Tau Lambda Sigma, a local service sorority, including president, parliamentarian, and special events co-chair. Elizabeth was also a student ambassador for the university, giving weekly tours, coordinating showcase events, and working in the Admissions Office. Her undergraduate research was selected for presentation at the National Conference on Undergraduate Research (NCUR) where she presented her visual project titled Churches. She was also selected to study Spanish through an immersive language and cultural program in Costa Rica where she studied at Universidad Técnica Nacional.

Elizabeth currently resides in Lake Barrington, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, where she is a partner and co-owner of View Marketing & Creative, an award-winning marketing agency. Her work focuses on helping clients grow through strategic branding, thoughtful storytelling, and creative execution across platforms. Her clients include B2B companies, startups, and various non-profit organizations including the Diocese of Des Moines.

She remains dedicated to service and her Catholic faith through volunteer work. She contributes her time and talents in marketing and design to the Together in Joy Gala for St. Teresa of Ávila Catholic Church and serves on the Board of the Jeremy Stom Remembrance Foundation. She previously served as Board President and Inside Volunteer Coordinator for the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. In recognition of her faith-filled leadership, she was honored with the Christifideles Award from the Archdiocese of Chicago, which is given to Catholic laypeople who have demonstrated a deep commitment to parish life.

Elizabeth fondly remembers early mornings for marching band practice, late nights preparing for mock trial competitions, and the strong friendships that continue to be a meaningful part of her life today. The academics, mentorship, and sense of community she experienced at Dowling played a formative role in shaping the person she is today, and instilled in her a lifelong commitment to service and faith.

Spring Break with Purpose: DCHS Students Serve in Brazil

Over spring break, a group of 24 students and chaperones from Dowling Catholic High School traveled to Goiânia, Brazil, to volunteer at Terra Livre—a nonprofit educational center that supports children and families through academic enrichment, social and emotional development, and essential social services. Since the inaugural trip in 2005, more than 200 DCHS students have participated in this life-changing service experience, building lasting connections and making a meaningful impact in the community.

The service week is focused not only on engaging with the children of Terra Livre, but also on providing DCHS students with a formation experience that deepens their understanding of poverty and inspires a lifelong commitment to service, both abroad and at home. Mitzi Amado, Terra Livre’s cofounder, reflected on the enduring partnership, expressing awe that high school students from the United States continue to return year after year. She called it a profound example of divine providence, and a testament to how God continues to knit these two distant communities together in partnership over so many years.

This year’s trip held special significance as the group’s fundraising efforts and donation covered 10% of the cost for a new plot of land

where Terra Livre plans to build an expanded center. The hope is that the facility will be completed in time for Dowling Catholic’s return visit in 2027. During their stay, the group visited the future site, gathering to pray over the land and for the generations of children who will be nurtured and supported there in the years ahead.

“Praying over the prospective land for a new Terra Livre center was a very unique moment,” said Ginny Heddinger, a rising senior. “It was emotional because I had really begun to see the difference Terra Livre was making. Standing there, all I could think about was the possibility and difference that could be made in the lives of so many more people. I admire the conviction and devotion of Mitzi and everyone at Terra Livre. They are still raising money to buy the land, but they are so certain that this is what God has in store for them and I agree. Their faith in their purpose as well as in God is so remarkable and admirable and definitely something I will keep with me back at home.”

Chaperoning this year’s trip were Taylor Schulte, Tim Schulte ’07, Stephanie Parks, and Terry Clark ’96. For Clark—a social studies teacher and Chair of the Theology Department at DCHS—it marked his seventh visit to Brazil since first traveling with the group in 2016.

“The mission of Terra Livre is one of the most beautiful and profound things I have ever experienced,” Clark shared. “Watching the love of Christ come alive through the children at the center and our Dowling Catholic students is what I imagine Christ envisioned when He commanded us to ‘love your neighbor as yourself.’ It is a pure and innocent love— watching strangers look upon each other with admiration. In my opinion, it’s one of the most impactful things we do at Dowling Catholic.”

Dowling Catholic Unveils New Athletics Logo

Dowling Catholic has introduced a new athletics logo that honors the school’s longstanding traditions and history while establishing a unified and consistent visual identity for its athletic teams. More than just a design update, the “DC Cross” represents the shared spirit of students, athletes, alumni and fans.

Over time, the visual identity of Dowling Catholic Athletics became inconsistent, with teams using a variety of logos and marks. The new athletics logo provides unity and clarity with a single design that is distinct, simple and recognizable. Whether on a stadium jumbotron or a jersey, the new mark brings cohesion and consistency across all athletic teams.

At the same time, the Dowling Catholic crest remains the school’s primary institutional logo, reflecting the enduring charisms of Faith, Truth and Wisdom - core values that have long shaped the school’s mission and continue to define its identity today.
