Things to See & Do Visit the Eden Killer Whale Museum Go whale & dolphin watching Check out the fishing trawlers at Eden Wharf Get hands on at the Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre Visit the Davidson Whaling Station Try sea kayaking on Twofold Bay Take a cruise Hire a fishing charter VISITOR INFORMATION Mitchell Street, Eden Ph: 02 6496 1953

George Bass and Matthew Flinders were the first Europeans to ‘discover’ Twofold Bay in 1798, but the region had been inhabited by members of the Yuin nation for thousands of years, attracted by the rich food resources offered by the sea and surrounding forests. Local Aboriginal people had a strong connection with killer whales, and this included the harvesting of small whales and fish that killer whales herded into the shallows. A permanent shore-based whaling station was first established by the Imlay Brothers in

6

& surrounds

the 1830s, and whaling continued for another century. You can experience some of Eden's history and see the skeleton of “Old Tom”, Eden’s famous killer whale, at the Eden Killer Whale Museum. For a real taste of life in the whaling industry you can visit Davidson Whaling Station, the longest operating shore-based whaling station in Australia, located on Kiah Inlet at Twofold Bay. Historic Boydtown is also worth a visit - make sure you drop in to the beautifully restored Seahorse Inn. Today Eden is famous as a destination for whale-watching, with migrations occurring in late autumn and spring. It's a great place to go on a whale-watching cruise, or even spot whales from headlands or beaches. The Sapphire Coast Marine Discovery Centre, located on Main Wharf, has displays of the local marine environment. It's a fantastic place to take children, with touch tanks and all sorts of interesting things. The Discovery Centre also run Rocky Rambles, Snorkel Tours and other activities during school holidays. For the adventurous, The Light to Light Walk is one of Australia's iconic bush walks, taking 3 days to walk from Green Cape Lighthouse in the south to Boyd's Tower in the north.

'Wild Catch' - the history of abalone fishing on the FSC Over 100 species of abalone can be found around the world, and it has been a traditional food supplement valued by all first nation peoples that have had access to it. The growth of Australia’s abalone market was initially influenced by the migration of Chinese to the Australian goldfields, and later in the early 1960's, as natural resources in other countries became overfished. In late 1963, a concentrated effort in the commercial abalone fishery started on the Far South Coast of New South Wales. With a restricted fishery in other parts of the country, NSW waters proved extremely attractive for divers to make big earnings, and it wasn’t long before abalone stocks became vulnerable to overfishing. Today, the commercial abalone fishery is a tightly regulated industry with a concern by all involved to ensure the longevity of the species, its natural environment and its long term availability for future generations.

Abalone divers have been described by some people as having a unique character that enables them to withstand the cold depths of the ocean in order to harvest by hand one of the world’s most unusual delicacies. Through objects, archives and interviews, 'Wild Catch' explores the unique underwater ‘office’ of the abalone diver and the intriguing mollusc that has been a prized catch for thousands of years. 'Wild Catch' is on display until 15th December. Local commercial abalone diver, John Smythe, continues to dive after 43 years in the industry. He represents the industry on national and state boards, and remains committed to industry research and sustainability. Photo: J Smythe.

HistoricPambula Things to See & Do Enjoy the beautiful historic buildings of Pambula Village Stroll around Panboola's wetlands and amazing revegetation areas, including the Old Racecourse Visit the friendly kangaroos at Pambula Beach Try some oysters at Pambula Lake

The Pambula River floodplain was for thousands of years a source of food and materials for the Thaua people of the Yuin nation. Europeans first explored the region during George Bass's southern voyage of 1797; a marker has been erected by the National Parks and Wildlife Service on this historic site. European settlement began in the 1830s, with the township built on the southern banks of the Pambula River. Severe flooding in the 1860s meant the town had to be re-located to its present site on higher ground. Pambula’s historic past is still very much in evidence, with beautifully restored and maintained historic buildings and farmhouses. Pambula now has an eclectic mix of businesses, with art galleries, cafÊs, restaurants, retailers, pubs, a bakery, deli, organic and bulk food shop

and even an old-fashioned milkbar. Pambula Beach has an excellent swimming beach patrolled by the Pambula Surf Life Saving Club, dog friendly beach at Middle Beach and the beautiful Pambula Rivermouth, with a playground and barbecue.

Panboola's Ephemeral Festival - art inspired by nature Art and creativity will be at the heart of Panboola wetlands on Saturday 13th April, as the Ephemeral Festival celebrates the landscape of Panboola and the creativity it inspires. The community is invited to visit from 9am - 2pm and wander the grounds of the wetlands and enjoy temporary sculptures, installations of art, craft demonstrations, acoustic music, wood fired pizzas and coffee. Visit www.panboola.com to book into one of the several workshops on offer - try woodcarving, brushmaking, screen printing or nature mark making. Go for a stroll, enjoy a picnic, ride your bike, watch the birds or simply just ‘be’ in nature. It’s good for the body and it’s great for the soul. Located on the southern edge of the village, Pambula is blessed to have Panboola wetlands on its doorstep. Grab a snack from one of the many nearby cafés and head to the picnic tables by the side of Tip’s Billabong or enjoy the shade of the Waterbird Sanctuary. Panboola is a bird watchers' paradise, a photographers delight and a lovely place

for an easy cycle or walk. Bike riders love Panboola – it’s a perfect venue for families to enjoy a safe and easy ride together. Cycle around the Old Pambula Racecourse or pass through as a pleasant shortcut if you are riding out to lunch at Oaklands or the Longstocking Brewery. Brochures are available at each entry point highlighting the extensive network of tracks. The 2.6km walk out to the Pambula River is one of our best-kept secrets – you are almost guaranteed to have the sandy beach to yourself. Visitors are welcome to explore the entire site!! The Panboola Centre at Watson’s Waterhole (behind the Idlewilde Motel) provides an alternate entry point with sealed car park, picnic tables and stunning vistas. Follow us on Facebook, or become a “Friend of Panboola” – it’s only $10 annually per family and is a great way to support the team of volunteers who help Panboola be the special place that it is! Panboola is open 7 days a week, entry is free and everyone is welcome.

VISITOR INFORMATION Beach Street, Merimbula Ph: 02 6495 1129

Merimbula is the tourist hub of the Sapphire Coast with its lakeside restaurants and cafés, great shopping and a vast array of attractions and accommodation choices. Merimbula has a long history of human occupation, with Aboriginal people making the most of the available food resources, leaving behind middens that are visible today. In more recent times, Merimbula was one of several coastal trading ports connecting the

14

region to the outside world, as the area was relatively isolated with a lack of rail or road access. The Old School Museum on Main St. has information and displays about the town’s early European history. There are several walking tracks that take advantage of the beautiful views around the Lake; from the Wharf to Spencer Park, from the Bridge to Top Lake and around Fishpen. Other things you can do around Merimbula include snorkelling, surfing, cycling, enjoying a scenic flights, ten-pin bowling, family fun parks or experiencing native animals or marine creatures up close. Merimbula is a great place to go shopping, with specialty shops and nationally-known outlets tucked away in arcades and courtyards. There are also plenty of cafés with great coffee. Foodies are spoilt for choice, with a wide range of restaurants, clubs and the Hotel offering a host of different dining experiences, but with fresh local seafood a common theme. Whales migrate past Merimbula from September to November each year, feeding and frolicking in the Bay, making it easy to whale watch from on board a boat or from the beach.

EAT Merimbula - heavenly food in a divine setting Sunday March 10th 2019 marks the seventh year of this premium and unique foodie celebration, held on the shores of Merimbula Lake. The super popular Fishpen food festival celebrates our local chefs and restaurateurs who gather in a market style setting from 10am - 2pm to create bespoke dishes, featuring the best of our local produce. Guests are encouraged to stroll amongst the stalls, settle on a picnic blanket and savour something new. With no dish over $10 it’s a chance to sample all the local creations. For the locals and out of towners that return every year, EAT is as close to a religious experience as one can get. Captain Sponge, of Magical Oyster Tour fame, and this year’s poster pin up boy agrees. Gathering his robes and his basket of loaves and fishes, he proclaims it “heavenly food in a divine setting”. EAT has always been about supporting and

cultivating local providores and this year is no exception with newbies ‘A Pinch of Yum’ and indigenous caterer ‘Mirritya Mundya’ already deep in planning to make their mark. Growing demand from visitors has seen more and more vendors participate each year and in 2019 we look forward again to bringing you the freshest and most innovative local produce from land and sea. Explore Brogo Dam with Brogo Wilderness Canoes Summer is a great time to explore the inland waterways of the Far South Coast - the days are fine, the water is warm and with any luck the native bass will be biting. One of the best locations to go canoeing is the Brogo Dam, with its extensive catchment running back into the magnificent Brogo Wilderness area. The waterways are pristine, and the peaceful backwaters are a haven for local native bird life and fauna - sea eagles, swooping azure kingfishers, water dragons, goannas and shy echidnas have all been observed on and around the Dam. To really experience the beauty of the Brogo Dam, you need to

get out on the water. Dave and Sue at Brogo Wilderness Canoes hire fully equipped canoes for a half day or full day, allowing plenty of time to check out the Dam. Their canoes are safe, stable “Canadians”, and all safety gear, maps and instructions are provided. For tranquillity and beauty it’s hard to beat - you can explore forest gullies, swim, bring a picnic lunch and stop wherever you desire. A 2 - 3 person canoe with all safety gear costs $30 per adult and children under 13 half price for a half day (4 hours). For bookings contact Dave or Sue on (02) 6492 7328. www.brogocanoes.com.au

Enjoy nature walks around Merimbula The Merimbula Boardwalk will take you on a journey around the ever-changing lake, over the water and mangrove beds, under eucalypt canopies and past Merimbula’s famous Sydney Rock Oyster farms. Look out for sea and shore birds, oyster farmers working their leases and stop at Sunsets Kiosk café for refreshments. In the afternoon, the back of the lake, known as ‘top lake’ is a great spot to photograph sunsets. The easy grade walk is approximately 3.4 kilometres return, takes around 1.5 hours to complete and is easily accessible for prams and wheelchairs. Access is next to the bridge in Market Street, or from Lakeview Drive. Image/info courtesy Sapphire Coast Destination Marketing Pty Ltd

Rotary Park to Bar Beach Start at Rotary Park, next to Spencer Park on Main St., and follow the track as it meanders between the shore line of Merimbula Lake and Lake St. Situated below Lake St., the track has been cut from rock and is hidden from the road. With the lush vegetation, including vines and dense canopies, the walk has a magical feel and is quite secluded - children will love it. Wander down steps, over bridges across gullies and look out for the amazing views toward Mitchies Jetty, the lake and Main Beach, until you emerge at Bar Beach. Another easy walk which takes approximately 15 mins one way, but isn't suitable for prams or wheelchairs. Looking toward Main Beach. Image/info courtesy Destination NSW

Bega is the business heart of the Bega Valley, and a place of natural beauty, surrounded by lush pastures and the forested escarpment. In the language of local Aboriginal people, members of the Yuin nation, Bega is said to mean “large camping ground”. It would have been a place of great abundance, with an underground lake feeding a series of wetlands. The dairy industry has always played a major part in the Bega economy, and this is still the case today, with the Bega Cheese Co-op one of Australia’s leading manufacturers of dairy

products. A visit to the Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a must for all visitors to the region; it has a wonderful display of cheese and butter-making equipment from the 1900s and provides an insight into how early farmers lived, worked and transported their products.

With beautiful beaches, estuaries and National Parks all close by, Tathra is an ideal holiday destination for both families and couples. Tathra’s famous historic Wharf, classified by the National Trust as the only remaining steamer wharf on the Australian coastline, is a popular spot for fishing. Built in 1862, the Wharf was built from funds donated by farmers and the Illawarra Steam Navigation Company and operated until 1952. Today, the Wharf is a favourite fishing spot for visitors and locals alike. Bushwalking, kayaking, mountain-biking, snorkeling and surfing are all popular around Tathra. There are lots of things for the kids to do, with a fantastic skatebowl suitable for skateboards, bikes and scooters, and a great playground

There are plenty of National Parks within easy driving range of Tathra. Bournda NP is 15mins south toward Tura Beach, the Mimosa Rocks NP hugs the coast north towards Bermagui and Biamanga NP is north-west of Tathra between the Princes Highway and the coast. Direct access to the ocean is available at Kianinny Bay (also good for swimming), and the boat ramp at Mogareeka provides an easy launch into the Bega River estuary. Tathra also has great places to eat, with gourmet delis, cafĂŠs and restaurants. Tathra Beach Tapas is located right on the sand next to the Surf Club, and features local produce and seafood, great coffee, cake, snacks and is fully licensed. Intriguing Cobargo Things to See & Do Follow the Cobargo Village Historic Walk and listen to the Audio Tour Say hello to the friendly gnomes Explore nearby Wadbilliga National Park

Cobargo is located half an hour north of Bega, in the midst of lush, green pastures rolling away to forested mountains. The village was established with a Post Office, general store, school, hotel, church and blacksmith during the 1870s around the butter and cheese-making industries. In the 1860s, Cobargo was known as Wattletown, as bark stripped from local wattle trees was shipped to Sydney and Melbourne to be used in the tanning industry. This industry only ceased in 1964. Cobargo was also known as The Junction because of the junction of the Narira and Bredbatoura Creeks in the middle of the town. A Butter Factory and Co-op were established in 1901 and continued production, except for a short break due to fire, until 1980, when it closed because of changes in bulk milk production.

28

The town was large enough from the 1890s onwards to support a newspaper, ‘The Cobargo Watch’.

Today the picturesque historic village of Cobargo is more than a working village; it's a creative, vibrant place that reflects the diverse, talented locals. Cobargo's Laneway Markets are an initiative of Cobargo Creators and happen every Saturday from 9am till 1pm. Enjoy the friendly Cobargo vibe whilst browsing fresh produce, seedlings, herbs, local crafts, craft supplies and other locally made goodies. There’s also trashy treasures and treasured trash for the bargain hunters and the odd busker to entertain. On the 1st Saturday of the month there is also a car boot sale held in conjunction with the market. Cobargo still has its old favourites like the unique Bangles Pottery shop, where the owner throws pots in the front window, and South Coast Leather, where the scent of leather wafts from the door. Sally Wilson Art sells fine art, individually-crafted bracelets as well as whimsical merchandise like cards, mugs, tea towels, hand-made bags and more.

South Coast Leather Built in 1913, the shop that houses South Coast Leather started out as a grain store, then became a butcher's shop. In fact the original chopping block is still on display today. Today South Coast Leather stocks quality leather goods, from key rings to luggage and everything in between. Brands you'll find include leading labels such as Outback, Pack Saddle, Lambada, Modapelle Leather to name just a few. Classic leather belts are handmade on the premises. Beautiful fashion, hats, accessories, European shoes and floor rugs can be found in the range, alongside legendary gear from R. M. Williams, including Akubra. South Coast Leather is a proudly independent and family owned business promoting Australian Made goods.

Cobargo Folk Festival welcomes old hands and newbies Every year we have a lot of first timers at the Cobargo Festival, which is on at the Cobargo Show Ground on the first week in March. Not only are they first timers in Cobargo, many of them have never been to a folk festival and, unless they’re with friends who’ve been before, they are often not sure what to expect, what to see and where to go. For those people, and others, here’s a quick guide. It was Louis “Satchmo” Armstrong who said: “all music is folk music. I’ve never seen a horse sing a song”. Modern folk festivals deliver a wide range of musical genres, as well as dance and spoken word. They take in traditional Australian bush music and poetry, Bluegrass and American Old Time Music, traditional Celtic music, virtuoso musicians, world class singer song writers, young electric folk bands, world music, from places like South America and the Balkans, comedy, musical theatre and a wide range of dance styles. Best thing to do when you arrive at the Festival and get your wristband is take half an hour to read through the program. As well as artist's biographies and a grid of when and where they’re on (there’s a great site map to help), there is a wealth of information about the festival organisation, special events, emergency procedures and rules and regulations that the festival has to abide by. You’ll see information on the food and other stalls on site, and where you can buy a beer or a glass of wine to have with your meals. Our festival is very relaxed and it’s perfectly okay to go and stand at the back of a venue to see

30

whether you like a performer or not. It’s also ok to just stay for a few songs or tunes and then – at a break in the music – leave to see something else. If you’re new to the festival, it’s perfectly acceptable to ask volunteers or other patrons “what’s good”. Of course that’s a subjective thing and people have different tastes but it’s a good way to meet new people. If you’re in the festival bar, don’t be surprised if there’s a spontaneous outbreak of music – we call it a “Session” and often you’ll see some of the Festival headliners joining in. Folk Festivals are places to learn. On Saturday and Sunday you’ll see listed a wide range of workshops where performers teach or talk about their skills and give tips and tricks for beginners and intermediate players. Also look out for themed concerts and special events. Each year we put all the best guitarists together for a concert and, separately, the best fiddle players – all from different musical genres. This year we’ve worked together with the Showground Trust and the Show Society to try to improve facilities at the site, including more camping space – which has been at a premium in recent years. To make the site more comfortable, we will be placing a limit on the number of camping tickets and also restricting the showground arena to tents and small campers and vans. Details of our 2019 performers and how to buy tickets are on our website www.cobargofolkfestival.com Get in early and enjoy the fun.

A Musical Feast at Four Winds this Easter The Four Winds Easter Festival (Thursday 18 – Sunday 21 April) is centred around events in the spectacular outdoor Sound Shell amphitheatre. On of the major works performed on Sound Shell Saturday is the River Meeting Suite by Australian Saxophonist Jeremy Rose (The Strides and The Vampires). This suite of short pieces brings together four saxophone players, the Compass Quartet. They combine throughout this beautiful suite with two musicians from the Northern Indian tradition, Bobby Singh (Tabla) and Sarangan Sriranganathan (Sitar). The second major work on the Sound Shell Saturday program is considered to be one of the great masterpieces of the romantic repertoire: Piano Quintet in F minor by Brahms. Prepare to be amazed at the range of expressive sounds and the dynamic that just five instruments can produce; the musicians performing are Stefan Vladar (piano) and the Australian String Quartet. The work has an ending which has been described as ‘a breathtaking, definitive conclusion…’.

On Sunday in the Sound Shell Four Winds presents ‘Beethoven in the Bush’. This concert really is one not to miss, embodying much of what Four Winds is about, bringing different musical traditions together. It spans performances by Riley Lee on Japanese bamboo flute (Shakuhachi) and Enigma Quartet (strings), to vocal brilliance with Coco’s Lunch and ends with a major work for piano and orchestra – Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No.3, conducted at the piano by Stefan Vladar. Four Winds is the only place in Australia you'll hear this music in the same program, or these performers collaborating - it's a truly unique event. Combine this feast of music with local food and wine, including the Far South Coast region's award-winning oysters, to delight all your senses. A free shuttle bus is available from Bermagui on Saturday and Sunday, with return bus services on Sound Shell Saturday from Batemans Bay and Pambula, and from Canberra for the Sunday event. WILD CATCH Until 19th December 2019, Eden Killer Whale Museum, Eden Through objects, archives and interviews, Wild Catch explores the unique underwater ‘office’ of the abalone diver and the intriguing mollusc that has been a prized catch for thousands of years. In late 1963, a concentrated effort in the commercial abalone fishery started on the Far South Coast of New South Wales. NSW waters proved extremely attractive for divers to make big earnings, and it wasn’t long before abalone stocks became vulnerable to overfishing. Today, the commercial abalone fishery is a tightly regulated industry with a concern by all involved to ensure the longevity of the species, its natural

environment and its long term availability for future generations. Read more on page 7 or visit the website at killerwhalemuseum.com.au

The villages of Tilba Tilba and Central Tilba lie on the slopes of Gulaga, a place of great spiritual significance to the local Yuin nation, particularly Yuin women. Gulaga is cloaked with an amazing rainforest around its peak and it's well worth hiking to the top for spectacular views (approx. 5 hours). Access the walking track from the rear of Pam's Store in Tilba Tilba.

The entire village of Central Tilba was classified by the National Trust in 1974 in recognition of its historical significance. Central Tilba has maintained its village atmosphere, and has become a centre for craftspeople and artisans, as well as oldfashioned stores like the general store, lolly shop and toy shop. Leatherwork, art studios, woodwork, unusual clothing, cafes, antiques and giftware, as well as a bakery and a pub are all located on Central Tilba’s main street. At the ABC Cheese Factory there's South Coast Cheeses made on the premises, and Real Tilba Milk, made from local jersey cows. Eurobodalla’s River of Art Festival celebrates local creativity River of Art, the vibrant annual Eurobodalla festival that celebrates the extensive arts scene along the Far South Coast, kicks off again on Friday 17 May. Running until Monday 27 May, the River of Art Festival is a showcase for all types of art from paintings and sculpture through the performance art, film and poetry. Now in its 14th year, River of Art features over 100 events including Open Studios, music events, art prizes, poetry and a trail of art stretching from Durras to Bermagui. The festival is a community-led initiative. Cochaired by Di Jay and Robin Scott-Charlton, it is run by volunteers with support from local businesses, the Eurobodalla Shire Council and the NSW Government. Its aim is to present and promote local and visiting artists across all art forms. Festival highlights include a trail of open studios, which enables visitors to go behind the scenes and see artists in their own working spaces and learn about what inspires them. “Visitors can see first hand the way this stunningly beautiful part of Australia influences the region’s diverse and extensive output of art. We have extraordinary talents here who produce beautiful work – whether it’s painting or poetry, music or woodwork,” co-chair Robin Scott-Charlton said.

56

Another highlight is the $2000 River of Art Prize which will be awarded at the start of the Festival. Last year’s winner, local artist and creative arts coordinator, Indira Carmichael won first prize with her ink and pencil portrait, Midas’ Daughter. All artworks will be exhibited in Narooma throughout the festival. As a trail of art, the festival encourages visitors to plan their own journey through the many locations which feature Eurobodalla’s art. The festival’s own title, River of Art, plays on the shire’s name, Eurobodalla, which is Aboriginal for “land of many waters”. “This region is blessed with its dramatic ocean beaches, cliffs and headlands, the patchwork of lakes nestling the shorelines and the abundance of rivers and creeks. It’s not surprising that it’s home to such extraordinary art,” co-chair, Di Jay explained. River of Art is one of the region’s most popular festivals. So make sure you mark the dates in your calendar and book a bed if you plan to stay. The festival program will be available before Easter. You can stay in touch with festival developments through the website www.riverofart.com.au or follow up on Facebook.

Memorable Mogo Things to See & Do Step back in time and pan for gold at the Original Gold Rush Colony Go mountain-biking on the trails in nearby State Forests Take a stroll around town and explore the interesting shops

The township of Mogo was originally settled when gold was discovered in the early 1850s at Cabbage Tree Creek. Estimates of the number of diggers who converged on the town range from a conservative 200 to an unlikely 20,000. To experience what the town was like during the boom, a visit to the 1850s gold rush theme park Original Gold Rush Colony is a must. Located in a natural Australian bush setting on 4.5ha, the Original Gold Rush Colony, formerly known as Old Mogo Town, is a great place to step back in time. The Original Gold Rush Colony has won numerous awards at the South Coast Regional Tourism Awards including the Heritage and Cultural Tourism - Hall of Fame award. Mogo is now famous for its great range of specialty stores, housed in replica nineteenth century timber buildings.

There are potteries, galleries, antique stores, bookshop and coffee shops, many of which specialise in unusual and interesting items. Mogo is the perfect place to spend time browsing for something a little bit different.

C

The north-western section of Deua National Park is a karst or limestone layer containing 400 million year old cave systems. The Big Hole and Marble Arch are two fascinating features which can be seen without going underground. Please note that permission is required to enter some caves. The walk starts from Berlang Camping Area, 45 minutes drive south of Braidwood along the Krawarree Road. After fording the knee-deep Shoalhaven River, an easy walk leads to a viewing platform from where the remarkable Big Hole, a chasm some 96 metres deep and 50 metres wide, can be safely viewed. The track to Marble Arch continues from below the viewing platform. From the base of the hill the track is gently undulating until the very steep 150 metre descent into the Marble Arch. Wide bands of marble can be seen in the walls of the canyon and cavern roof and beautiful ferns cling to the lower sides of the canyon. Please note: The Shoalhaven River may become impassable after heavy rain. Do not enter the Marble Arch if Reedy Creek has risen or there are storms in the area.

This newly constructed walk connects Boyd’s Tower to Green Cape Lightstation, about 40km by road south of Eden. This magnificent coastal walk can be done over a couple of days or in easy half day sections. Spectacular ocean views, red rock platforms, long sandy beaches and a surprising array of different coastal landscapes, plant communities and animal habitats are found on this walk. Humpback whales and perhaps southern right whales may be seen on their southern migration during the spring months. A detailed walk brochure is available at the NPWS office in Merimbula. Camping is available along the way or stay in comfort in the Green Cape Lightkeepers Cottages. Park use fees apply. 60

Start this walk from Kianinny Bay via Tathra in the north or from Turingal Head via Wallagoot Lake Boat Club in the south. Rugged coastline, sandy and pebbly beaches and spectacular cliffs are features of this walk. The coastal heathland, dominated by dwarf oaks, is a haven in winter and spring for nectar-feeding birds like the eastern spinebill. At Boulder Bay, a fragile and uncommon remnant rainforest lies unusually close to the sea. Camping is available at Hobart Beach on the southern side of Wallagoot Lake. Park use fees apply.

Breathtaking Batemans Bay Things to See & Do Explore the Clyde River by boat, houseboat or kayak Taste some fresh oysters at the Oyster Shed Enjoy the beaches nearby Visit the many National Parks in the region, from hinterland forests to coastal gems VISITOR INFORMATION Princes Hwy, Batemans Bay Ph: 1800 802 528 info@eurobodalla.com.au

Like many coastal towns, Batemans Bay, settled by Europeans in the 1820s, relied on timber, ship building, dairying and fishing as its main source of income over the past 200 years. The Old Courthouse Museum has a wonderful collection of historical items and is well worth a visit. The town is accessed from the north by its famous lifting span bridge, the oldest of its type in Australia. Construction of a replacement bridge is planned to commence in 2019. Now a thriving regional centre and major

tourist destination, people come to Batemans Bay from all over Australia for its natural beauty. Situated on the banks of the magnificent Clyde River, water is deeply ingrained in the culture of ‘the Bay’. Swimming, boating, fishing, kayaking, surfing and diving are all within easy reach of town. The Bay is famous for its Clyde River oysters, and there are plenty of cafés, restaurants, clubs and hotels offering local seafood on the menu. The shopping is great too with the Village Centre and Bridge Plaza, plus an array of national brand outlets and local specialty stores. The Batemans Marine Park ensures that the coastal environment is protected for future generations. There are also several great National Parks to explore within easy driving distance. Batemans Bay is a great destination for families, with its array of outdoor activities and attractions such as mini-golf, a cinema, animal park, tennis and a carnival in summer. Hire a boat, kayak or a houseboat to explore the spectacular upper reaches of the Clyde River. Follow the coastline south to explore beautiful beaches to be found at Malua Bay, Rosedale and Broulee. www.farsouthcoastimag.com.au
