WHAT’S HAPPENING It's been a while since we shared with you about our latest endeavors at Double M Aviation! Since we last spoke, our team has diligently been working on many exciting projects. Even in the midst of a national pandemic, we have remained steadfast in providing reliable aviation maintenance and service. Over the last few months, we have also remained vigilant regarding the safety and health of our team members and our aircraft owners. Survey A while back, our friends at LAL Today conducted a poll asking if readers would be interested in taking a private air charter out of Lakeland. The results showed that nearly 90 percent of those polled would like to take advantage of a charter at some point in the near future. GLEN DUNCAN’S BEECHCRAFT BARON How did you get into aviation?

The short answer: through the United States Marine Corps.

Platoon Leadership Class (Aviation). The much longer version: my dream of flying came from growing up on a dairy farm in MS. I would often see jets flying over the farm while I sat on a tractor in a dusty field wishing that someday I could do that.

Never having flown, I had no idea where to start!

As fate would have it, I accidentally ran into a Marine Corps. officer recruiter, at Mississippi State University. He made me an offer I could not refuse. After graduating college and completing USMC Officer Basic School, I reported to NAS Pensacola for flight training. Following that, I volunteered and was selected for transition training in the AV-8 Harrier.

When did you start flying general aviation?

As a senior in college, through a flight indoctrination program sponsored by the Marine Corps. Throughout my USMC career of 21 years, I was able to continue flying GA, and accumulated my civilian ratings through military flying clubs. I had the best of both worlds, flying Harriers weekdays and GA on weekends.

After my Marine Corps. career, I was fortunate to be offered a job flying Boeing 737s with Southwest Airlines. We purchased our first aircraft (a Piper Arrow) because our son, Mark, expressed a desire to become a professional aviator. We used that plane to get all his ratings through instrument and commercial. Mark is now a Southwest first officer as well as a KC-135 Aircraft Commander with the AL Air Guard. As much as we loved the Arrow, it simply no longer met our needs. With the help of Mike, we moved up to our current aircraft, N42101, a Beechcraft B-55 Baron.

What piece of advice would you give someone purchasing their first airplane?

Follow in my footsteps! Find a great mechanic who also flies and loves GA. I owe Mike and Double M a lot. From determining my passion and needs, to selecting and maintaining both of my planes, Mike was always there speaking from experience, and his advice was paramount.

LISTEN, even when they tell you things that you may not want to hear! Also, get involved with the maintenance.

Mike allowed me to learn my planes through helping with inspections. (Deep down he just wanted the laughs associated with watching a left-handed pilot attempting to do mechanic work)!

Why do you fly? And what do you enjoy most about your airplane?

First, I enjoy pushing the machine, whether it’s a Harrier, a B737, or a Piper Cub. It's who I am and will always be.

Some guys enjoy golf, playing poker and doing many other things. Me, I’d rather go to the airport, hang out with airplanes, and people who fly. Flying is my vice and I now get the greatest joy of passing my love of flying to our grandson. While he is only nine, he already enjoys pushing buttons and moving the plane through the sky! Second, I enjoy the freedom flying provides. After I was required to retire from Southwest due to the Federal age limit of 65, I can continue to travel without the hassle of airports controlled by TSA. We have plans to fly from the Bahamas all the way to Alaska before I give it up!

PLANES, CARS AND PLENTY OF FUN!

Recently, Double M Charters had the opportunity to be a part of the first ever Holiday Flying Festival & Car Show at the SUN 'n FUN Expo Campus in Lakeland. There were more than 350 aircraft at this unique preview for the 46th annual Sun ‘n Fun Aerospace Expo in April 2021. We enjoyed meeting new friends and being a part of the festivities. Some of our highlights include all of the aircraft displays, STEM project exhibits, and watching demos by the F35 Lightning II & F-16 Viper! We also gave away a Yeti Cooler!
