O

“About five years ago I was in Blithe Spirit in Victoria. It was my first introduction to Noel Coward and I just loved it … the script, the humor and pace of it. I love the educated wit of Noel Coward which seems to be missing from today’s theatre. It thought Hay Fever would be a perfect match for Echo Players audience,” he explained. The last time Armstrong was involved with Echo Players was eight years ago when he directed School for Scandal. He said he is thrilled to be leading another production at the Village Theatre. “I have a great cast. I have actors from Courtenay to Nanaimo.” The cast includes; Maureen Cusack as Judith Bliss a retired actress and her novelist husband David performed by Alistair McVey, their son Simon performed by Alex Hunter and Whitley Dunn playing the socialite daughter Sorel. The Bliss’ weekend guests are Sandy Tyrell performed by Clayton Orlando, Richard Greatham by Steve Hill, Myra Arundel by Heather Haseltine, and Jackie Coryton by Rya Harach. Rounding out the cast is Judy Hipkin as the maid. Armstrong is also excited about the set

which he designed and constructed. “I almost always do set design for shows I direct. It almost feels inseparable to me,” he acknowledged. He admitted that when he started thinking about the show he already had some ideas for the set design and luckily the stage is big enough to accommodate his theatrical vision. “The set has an upstairs. I have enough room to get two stories. I wanted a staircase for drama. Because Judith Bliss is an actress I liked the idea of her appearing at the top of the stairs and sweeping down.” Hay Fever opens February 15 and runs until March 4, at the Village Theatre in Qualicum Beach. A lot of time and money went into this building,” she stated. TOSH’s executive director, Corinne James said thanks to the hard work of a group TOSH still continues to follow the

T

guidelines of its original 1985 Planning Committee: an art gallery within a historical building with resident artists’ studios, three galleries, a gift shop, and a classroom for art classes. In 1998 a music program was introduced by Ron Hadley and since then people have been enjoying the experience of sitting in the intimate gallery and listening to top quality professional performers. “It has been 20 years since Ron started Music on Sunday. He has taken it from just jazz to all genres of music. Musicians travel from all over the world and stop off here on their tours. They plot out a tour and we are one of the stops. For just $20 to hear world class music in an intimate setting is incredible,” James acknowledged. To pay homage to the centre’s history some special events have been planned. TOSH is holding back-to-back art exhibitions from Jan. 29-Feb. 18 and Feb. 19-March 17. Described as a reunion of the many exceptional artists that have brought their exciting works to the art centre the first exhibition will showcase the pioneering artists who have worked in the building since it opened. The second exhibition running February 19 to March 17 features many of the artists who have exhibited in the arts centre since 2003. An opening reception takes place on February 21 at 2 p.m.

TOSH presents about 36 exhibitions per year featuring artists of varying mediums, techniques and skill levels and James admitted the entire community should be proud of what the centre has accomplished. “30 years is amazing for an art centre. I feel the reason we do well is because we have a retired population that appreciates art and has time to take classes. A lot of our income comes from our classes. I always employ the best instructors that I can find in that particular medium and classes are always sold out.” She said it helps that Vancouver Island is home to more artists per capita than any other part of Canada. James admitted that without volunteers there wouldn’t be an arts centre of this calibre in Qualicum Beach. “They work tirelessly. 95 percent of the work is done by volunteers. We cannot do it without them. We have about 80 volunteers. It is a great opportunity for a social experience in town. It has to be fun, why volunteer if it is not? That is what we are … we are here for a good time.” MORE INFORMATION
