COMMUNITY, IMAGINATION, & LAUGHTER ON STAGE TAKING PRIDE IN CREATING WONDERFUL MEMORIES THROUGH COMMUNITY THEATRE.

2017 - 2018 SEASON HILDA’S YARD by Norm Foster

Directed by Kelly Barnum

OCTOBER 12 –29, 2017 The season opener brings Norm Foster back to the Village Theatre with his token warmth and humor, and very loveable characters. This time we are in suburbs of the 1950’s in Hilda’s Yard. Empty nesters Hilda and Sam Fluck, find renewed spirit after their two grown children have finally left home. But their spunk and dreams of buying a pricey first television set to watch Gunsmoke are cut short. The children are moving back home. Hilda’s Yard, written by a true master of one-liners and situation comedy is sure to be a crowd pleaser.

THE CHRISTMAS EXPRESS by Pat Cook

Directed by Mari Lyn Kelly

DECEMBER 14 – 31, 2017 Two hours of laughter, warmth, and the occasional tear as Satch and Hilda, who run the Holly railway station, and a crowd of town women react to the enigmatic and mysterious stranger, Leo Tennenbaum. Add in a quarrelling pair of newlyweds, a dour inspector, and you are guaranteed an evening that will send you out with a chuckle and a renewed Christmas spirit. If you like Christmas, you’ll love The Christmas Express.

HAY FEVER by Noel Coward Directed by Michael Armstrong FEBRUARY 15 – MARCH 4, 2018 Set in the 1920s, and one of Noel Coward’s brightest theatrical delights, Hay Fever follows the unconventional, risqué and often downright rude Bliss family. The Bliss family love intrigue, love arguing, and really love a spotlight. They are everything a respectable family ought not to be – unconventional, uncensored and unapologetic.

MY OLD LADY by Israel Horowitz Directed by Lynne Carrow & Sue Murguly APRIL 19 – MAY 6, 2018 Israel Horovitz has called My Old Lady his Valentine to Paris. Down on his luck, Mathias Gold learned that, true to what he calls his “loser virus,” he has inherited a valuable apartment with unexpected strings attached. French real estate practice of “viager” in which an apartment bought at a low price can’t be occupied until the existing occupant dies and Mathilde, the present 92 year old occupant, shows no signs of expiring anytime soon. With its elite Paris setting where cultures, values, and reality collide, My Old Lady is a unique blend of comedy, drama and romance.

To purchase season tickets contact ECHO Players at 250-752-3522 or email info@echoplayers.ca The 2017/18 season brochures are also available at The Village Theatre. produced the Model T. Imrie added that the hot rod hobby as people like to refer to it started after the 2nd world war. “In 1946-47, servicemen were coming back. They had been flying P 51 Mustangs with all that power in front of them. They gravitated towards motorcycles and that’s when Harley Davidson got a real boost. Motorcycle clubs just took off because people wanted something to head on down the highway with and let them go.” He said the custom car craze started the same way. “Henry Ford in 1932 introduced the first flat head V8. So people came out of the war in that situation, took a V8 out of wrecking yards and plunked them in Model A Fords and roadsters and made themselves a classic hot rod which was called a jalopy. That was the evolution,” he explained. He said being part of the Ocean Idlers organization he has an opportunity to learn and teach the appreciation for the beauty, power, mechanics, and technology of the automobile from its inception until today. Imrie said the car collector craze continues to attract crowds and a new generation of car enthusiasts. “It is evolving. We have recognized that as a car club. This year we have a new class

called Rat Rods.” Imrie said with vehicles built from scrap and junk it takes recycling to a whole new level. “If you look at them it is art unto itself. You see ingenuity at its finest and it is inexpensive to get into,” he agreed. Sharing the art and science of reconditioning, constructing and restoration of automobiles of all vintages is the mandate of the club which also supports local charities. “Revenue we get from the show we put back into the community.” He said they have donated to the Poppy Fund, ALS, Vancouver Island Compassion Dogs Society and even a robotics program at Errington Elementary School. Entry to the Blast from the Past show is by donation for spectators. The gate receipt goes to ACRA and the Coombs Hilliers Volunteer Fire Department. MORE INFORMATION

beach?” she laughed. What will you find in the gallery? “Wood carvings, masks, jewellery and other potters work. We have a diverse range of things,” Dee explained. She said there are sculptures by metal artist Dave Kasprick including a collaboration Larry and Dave did. Their joint effort resulted in a formidable composition of an octopus holding two of Larry’s vessels. Other three dimensional art at the gallery features work by Teom Lim, Eden Elementals, Carol Ford, Yolanda Anderson, Scott Taylor, Dan Krystalowich and Danielle Bluestone and Courtney Powell of Trees and Me. Dee said a portion of sales from those artists will also go to the compassion fund. “I want to make this a personal challenge to every artist in our district. Take a portion of their sales in August or September and put it towards a cause of your own choosing,” she said, and added, “My goal at the end of August is $1000 for the animal care compassion fund.” Dee explained the fund helps animals that come in and need care for which their

human parents cannot afford. “Dr. Ashley Bernauer and her amazing team at the hospital work hard to treat every animal that needs care.” The veterinarian has been in the community since July 2015 and since then has hosted free pet health seminars at the Qualicum Beach Community Hall. Bernauer said there was an a similar compassion fund at the former vet clinic she worked at and when she set up her practice in Qualicum Beach she wanted to assist people here who needed financial help. “We started the fund to help people and pets when owners don’t have enough money to pay for vet care,” she explained. She said she feels blessed to live in a community where people care and she will be hosting more free pet seminars in the fall. MORE INFORMATION

Cooper said the Coombs Rodeo Grounds has a history of hosting rodeos but eight years ago the rodeos dried up like buzzard bait. She said they are trying to bring back the sport and its heritage but without calf roping or steer wrestling. “This is our third annual event. We want to bring rodeo back to the Island. We are the only one left on the Island, as far as I know,” she said. She said last year the main event had about 25 competitors and there were close to 40 barrel racers. “We have people that come from Kamloops, Merritt … all over BC. We are trying to bring more riders from other areas to remind them that Coombs rodeo is coming back,” she acknowledged. Of course it wouldn’t be legit without a rodeo clown and Sneaky Pete will be back again to keep the crowds entertained. Cooper admitted the former professional bare back rider has the toughest job at the

event. “Sneaky Pete is well known for his shenanigans. He is made out of titanium. He is amazing,” she agreed and added, “He is passionate about the sport and is trying to promote it and get more riders to come out.” She said there is some big coin up for grabs so the competition should be exciting. The cash prizes for contestants includes a bare back pot of gold of $5000; bull riding $4000; ranch broncs $3000 and barrel racing $1000. Tickets can be purchased at the gate. They are $20 for the day or $35 for the weekend. Students and seniors are $15 and kids 6 and under are free. MORE INFORMATION

Joke of the Month We had just finished tucking our five kids into bed when three-yearold Billy began to wail. Turns out, he had accidentally swallowed a penny and was sure he was going to die. Desperate to calm him, my husband palmed a penny that he had in his pocket and pretended to pull it from Billy’s ear. Billy was delighted. In a flash, he snatched it from my husband’s hand, swallowed it, and demanded, “Do it again!”
