Welcome to our summer term newsletter. This year has once again proved a challenge for all involved in education, but I am so proud of how the students and staff have adapted. We have offered the full curriculum and many extra-curricular opportunities throughout the year to ensure Stringer continues to provide a rich and valuable education. We are extremely grateful for your support, and I would like to say a huge thank you to our staff for all their hard work, positivity and enthusiasm. We now have the wellearned summer break to recharge and prepare for a new academic year.

In this final week of the academic year, we have some staff who are moving on to new pastures and we thank them for having been part of the Stringer community. We wish them well in their new roles and hope we can maintain those connections. One long-serving member of staff who has had a significant impact at Dorothy Stringer is Robin Graves, who is heading off for a well-earned retirement. Robin has been the Head of Science and an Assistant Headteacher, as well as a first-rate teacher who has inspired many to study Science beyond Stringer. We wish him all the best for his retirement. I hope you all have an enjoyable and restful summer holiday, and we look forward to welcoming you back as new Year 8, 9, 10 and 11 students, parents and carers, along with our new Year 7s, in MattSeptember.Hillier

Various music performances have made a welcome return, and so too the Art exhibition and the lower school production. With their dedication and enthusiasm, students have shown us the future is certainly bright and entertaining! Again, I would like to express my appreciation to all the staff who are here early or late supporting our students in unlocking their potential.

hEADTEACHER'S hMESSAGE EADTEACHER'S MESSAGE MATT HILLIER page H3 EADTEACHER MESSAGE Dear Parents, Carers, Staff and Governors,

The end of an academic year is a time to celebrate the successes of Year 11 and all that has happened over the course of the year. Year 11 were absolutely fantastic in completing their formal GCSE assessments – the first year group in two years to do so. The extended period for GCSEs worked well and I have no doubt the students are well prepared for college next year. It has been a pleasure seeing them mature over their final twelve months in school and I will miss the games of one bounce on the astroturf, the discussions around the canteen and by D tree. I do hope they will keep in touch, and I look forward to results day in August. The students were very well supported by their Head of Year, Mr Shilladay, and Pastoral Manager, Miss Alderson, and I know the students were grateful for their care and Inattention.amongst the academic successes the school continues to provide exceptional opportunities in Sport, Music, Art and Drama. Students have been successful for both Sussex and also GB and we are extremely proud of the participation and team ethic which the PE department have fostered so well.

Ernie and Edie's incredible illucinations REVIEW BY LIZ UREN page D4 RAMA DEPARTMENT

A

Our Lower School Production of Ernie and Edie’s Incredible Illucinations enchanted us, brimming with youthful energy, wit and wonder. The young actors took us on a magical journey into the world of child who can make anything happen through the power of imagination. The ensemble cast delivered a dazzling performance of great maturity and finesse; they took us on a roller coaster ride from fairground to mountain peaks, without missing a beat. The focus and dedication of our young people once again brought exciting live theatre to Dorothy Stringer and the audience were enthralled by the abundant talent of cast and crew. Whilst the production was supported by every member of our wonderful drama department, special thanks must be given to Miss Lucy Grout whose directorial debut charmed the audience and allowed our students to flourish. This was live theatre at its best and it was great to be back!

Year 8 PSHE students have been exploring "Global Citizenship". As part of this unit they were tasked with designing a project around an issue that affects global citizens as well as citizens of our school community We had a huge range of projects from poems and raps, to posters and PowerPoints. The projects covered an array of topics including homophobia, racism, transphobia, sexism, misogyny, littering, pollution and the dangers of the internet. The students presented their projects to the class and I was astounded by how mature and confident they were. It was inspiring to see our students getting passionate and creative around issues that face our school and wider community.

In June we were delighted to be able to take 60 Year 9 students to Plumpton College for a tour of the farm and facilities. The final topic in geography this year was the Geography of Consumerism. The visit to the farm allowed students to see examples of modern farming techniques around livestock including a robotic milking machine. The pig and cow sheds resulted in some good discussions around where our food comes from, animal right and vegetarianism. They also visited the small animal unit and saw a range of exotic animals that are cared for by the students studying to be veterinary assistants to zoo keepers. We are sorry we were only able to take 60 students. If your child is interested in Plumpton after Stringer they have lots of open days where the whole family can go and look around. This term has seen the launch of the school’s inaugural eSports team. Our team will be competing in the British Esports Student Championships from September. Esports (or electronic sports) is competitive video gaming, where skill and professionalism are celebrated. Esports is the fastest growing sport in the world and will be played in this summer’s Commonwealth Games. We have been using this term to have scrim sessions and are hoping to have three teams playing Rocket League against other schools’ teams across the UK. Esports can improve confidence, strategic thinking, problem solving abilities, reading comprehension and can help with the development of digital and cyber skills. These skills can be transferred across into physical sports, school work and esports offers a multitude of career pathways – it’s also fun to play!

independent LANGUAGE EXAMS

DRAMA DEPARTMENT page M19 FL DEPARTMENT MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES MFL DEPARTMENT

This year we have had 35 students preparing a GCSE language exam independently. Students have been entered as non-taught candidates for GCSEs in French, Spanish, German, Italian, Polish, Mandarin, Portuguese, Turkish, Japanese, Russian and Arabic. All students completed the speaking component first and I was so proud of how well they prepared for this as well as the subsequent listening, reading and writing papers. They have shown good organisation skills, resilience and great maturity and I am hoping their grades in summer will reflect the efforts they have put in. It was fantastic to be present in all the speaking exams, listening to such a wide range of languages being spoken. Thank you to staff and members of the Stringer community for helping out with conducting these exams. If you speak another language fluently, as well as having a good level in reading and writing, we might be able to enter you for an exam during your time at Dorothy Stringer. If you would like more information, email me at myr@dorothy-stringer.co.uk or come to M007 to have a chat. FRENCH AND SPANISH STUDENTS VISIT STRINGER

At the end of the summer term, the MFL department has hosted some French and Spanish students who are visiting Brighton as part of a language course The students have had the opportunity to spend an hour working with some of Year 9 classes and to exchange in either French, Spanish or English around different activities to prompt them to speak. It was a great opportunity for our Stringer students to make use of their language skills a in real context and to connect with students of their age, finding out what they have in common and discovering about each other’s culture.

Butterfly Haven News DR GARY FULLER

Thirty two of the Haven’s butterfly species arrived simply because the habitat was right Around 18 months ago we tried our first deliberate introduction. Brown Hairstreak eggs were rescued ahead of hedgerow pruning, brought to the Haven and attached to blackthorn bushes A single female butterfly was seen last summer, and with the aid of a new UV light technique, we discovered over wintering eggs We will find out in the coming weeks if a new breeding colony has established Dr Gary Fuller, for Friends of the Liz Williams Butterfly Haven. You can follow the latest happenings in the Haven on Twitter

This term it has been wonderful to see students enjoying the results of the wild flower planting as part of the Royal Palaces Queen's Jubilee celebration linked with the Tower of London Wild flower Moat project and the Brighton and Hove City of Meadows project. Now these small patches have grown hopefully the seeds will spread to add each year we will see more and more wildflowers around the school grounds.

Hop over one of the stiles into the Haven and you will see a huge number of golden skippers Three species of these tiny, moth like butterflies have dominated the surveys that are made each week. Look carefully and you may also see one of the six species of blue butterfly that breed in Haven or a black and white butterfly that resembles a miniature chess board These are Marbled Whites and are also having a really successful year

YEAR 7 POTATO PICKING MR SANDERCOCK

The Year 7s had their last lesson of Environmental Science this term, where they got to dig up their potatoes that they planted in March. The weather has not been great for potato growing so our harvest is down on previous years but we were still able to send most Year 7s home with a few to be enjoyed. Growing your own food is one of the most environmentally friendly things to do: no packaging, no artificial fertilisers, no pesticides, no food miles and associated traffic and pollution, cheaper and fresher, plus you get fit doing it! Then there is a social and mental health benefit of working together and of course the best bit, harvest and eating. We hope we have inspired some of your children to grow food in the future.

I promised myself I would write this following what has just been an incredible week away in Dolawen with 7FNS. Everything that could have happened on a school trip happened, including clearing up sick, noisy and late bedtimes, students missing home and me managing to lose my phone halfway down a mountain. But the best thing that happened was both my tutor group and I have made some lifelong memories together. Throughout the week I consistently found myself referring to the three core values of respect, resilience, and creativity, all of which the students required to be successful whilst in Wales It was so nice to observe them overcome their fears on the activities, support each other whilst out and about, be polite to the instructors and assist with the kitchen duties (some students had definitely never chopped a vegetable before or packed their own bag)

Moreover, when back at the centre this week I tried to avoid doing other school work, and have benefited hugely from this by spending time talking to the students, playing games in the evening, going on walks with them during free time and assisting them with their duties. I now know at least one extra thing about each of them that I didn't know last Monday. This relationship building opportunity was a key feature for me and having their form tutor with them for the week was also extremely advantageous. I also wanted to give a big shout out to Jean and Mick Baker and Katie Booth Without the goodwill of these people, experiences like this can't happen They were all absolutely brilliant in supporting me and the children as well as driving the minibuses throughout the course of the week Tomorrow is my birthday and I will be coming into work beaming from this trip Some of the girls in the tutor group are having a baking afternoon today, making cookies to celebrate both this and their week away. The Year 8 trip to Italy in the May half term was very enjoyable for all involved, despite the long coach journey and delays at Dover. The weather was kind and the excursions ran smoothly, with a morning spent in a small town market and a day in Venice and the lagoon, a trip to a picturesque seaside village, an finishing with a day trip to Verona and Sirmione at Lake Garda. In between excursions there was much fun at the beach, with not just swimming but some impressive sandcastle building and games of boule The final day was spent at the water park where the slides were the main attraction with the wave machine in the main swimming pool coming a close second. I am sure there were many lasting memories made on the trip that will stay with the students for many years The trip proved so popular with the Year 8s that we were able to put on an additional trip during Enrichment Week.

It was so wonderful to be able to celebrate the end of school for our Year 11 students at the Prom held at the Amex Stadium on Friday 1st July, our first prom in three years. A highlight is always seeing the students arrive in all their finery, and this year certainly didn't disappoint with some spectacular outfits on display. The evening started with a welcoming drink and students mingling in the function room until the meal was served at about 8pm It is quite an effort to persuade 300 people to sit down and stay sat down between courses when they are all desperate to get on the dance floor! But the students coped with this remarkably well. Before the dancing started though, there was an opportunity for the students to thank Mr Shilladay, who has been with them since Year 8. Their roar of gratitude was deafening. There had been a chance for students to vote for their Prom Royalty and these awards were given out and celebrated wholeheartedly. The rest of the evening was given over to dancing and the dance floor was busy all night until the final dance just before 11pm I hope the evening will be a lasting and pleasurable memory for all those who attended.
