ABOUT OUR GUEST SPEAKER MAJOR DEPUTY ANA ALMANZAR Ms. Almanzar served as the Director of Community Relations at the Mother Cabrini Health Foundation.

Before joining Mother Cabrini, Ms. Almanzar was appointed Chief of Staff to the NYS Director of Nonprof its of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo’s Executive Chamber.

Born and raised in the Dominican Republic, Ms. holds an associate’s degree f rom Eugenio Maria De Hostos Community College of CUNY, a BA f rom SUNY Delhi, a BA in Political Science f rom Columbia University, and a Master’s of International Affairs, Political and Economic Development and Immigration Policy Reform f rom Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs.

Alexander Jadey Veras Sosa

Alexander motivation comes f rom his passion in Dominican Literature. He dreams to create a magazine for Latino writers that help others navigate this career. He volunteers to a minority organization that supports Latino writers.

The scholarship would allow her to leave her part-time job and focus entirely on school. Arisa wants to work as a biomedical engineer in the healthcare sector, and focus on advancing diagnostics technology, treatment modalities, and telemedicine.

Although the pressure of academic excellence, Carleny is a full-time student with a full-time job that helps out her parents currently in disability. Carleny also takes time to volunteers in a big sister program, mentoring the youth achieve their goals. She will use the funds to pay for her tuition, and pursue her dream of obtaining a PhD.

She immigrated to the U.S during high school and quickly adapted to the schooling system here, overcoming language and learning barriers. She currently volunteers for United Leaders, a CUNY organization, and has dreams of opening her own housing community agency.

She plans to use the scholarship money to cover the cost of housing for her second semester and use any remaining funds for tuition. This past summer, Elvianna worked as a summer associate at a corporate law f irm, Ropes and Gray, as an SEO Law Fellow.

In the future, Elvianna wants to practice Corporate or Immigration Law, and she sees herself establishing her own scholarship.

Frankie Tejeda

Frankie will use the scholarship to pay off remaining costs of her program, potentially study abroad and to apply to graduate school. Frankie is an artist that sees themselves involved in museum, galleries, and community-based work; they want to share art with their community.

MEDICINE - Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine

Garbriela Rodriguez

She currently serves as the Mentorship Chair for the Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) chapter at Geisinger through which she established a mentorship program among LMSA members to provide a networking opportunity for students.

Academically, she is one of the top medical students at her school.

She has been involved in Hispanic organizations with the focus on food insecurity, as well as in local politics by volunteering in city council, helping people register to vote, which gave her a renewed idea of empowerment. The scholarship will help her pay for tuition.

Jeremiah Perez

Jeremiah is an active member in his community, serving as a football coach and mentor for his community’s youth league.

He wants to work as a public-school teacher after graduating, and to mentor kids that he sees himself in - encouraging them to push forward and work with the resources available to them as he did.

MEDICINE CUNY School of Medicine Jesmely has always been involved in community service, and now as a graduate student she has given back to her high school. Her aspiration is to represent people of her culture as a medical doctor that are underrepresented in the community.

Jhoan Yaritza Suazo Montano

He has volunteered at Presbyterian Hospital for the past three years. He is excited to be involved in the community through political organizations, as well as mentoring the youth with similar backgrounds. Jhoan dreams to provide medical services in both the United States and the Dominican Republic, where he wants to create a hospital with f ree services.

Jovan wants pursue his father steps in the aviation industry. In his hometown in Indiana, Jovan is a proud Dominican that volunteers at Roberto’s Kids organization, a non-prof it that ships baseball equipment to countries in need, he personally shipped more than 300 pounds of equipment to Af rica.

Jubelkis Diaz

She is a passionate student that an early age understood the impact of f inancial hardship. She currently interns at Morgan Stanley at their wealth management division. In her essay she wrote of improving f inancial literacy in the Dominican Republic.

Born out of two Dominican f irst-generation college graduates, his Dominican heritage comes f rom his grandparents. He dreams to be a successful businessman. In his essay he stated that one of his aspirations is to open kid’s baseball camps throughout New York City in order to bring the community together, and make great memories.

PSYCHOLOGY Pennsylvania State University As a line ambassador there, she gives tours of prospective students. Keilyn hopes to give back to the Dominican community by continuing her practice of encouraging students to pursue higher education and share her own story and experiences.

At Harvard, Sashany is an executive editor for the Harvard Latin American Law Review, a student writing editor for Harvard Civil Rights and Civil Liberties Law Review, and a student attorney for Harvard Prison Legal Assistance Program. She has a deep desire to diversify the legal practice as a Human and Civil Rights attorney.

Shelinee was accepted into a program at her school that allows her to stay an extra year to work on a community project; she is working on a galvanic sensor and online platform designed to introduce high school students to interdisciplinary STEM research, called “ElectroBod: Inspiring Young Minds with Hands-On STEM Learning.”

Suilan Jon del Rosario

Suilan is an active volunteer at Food Bank For New York City, having completed over 150 hours of volunteer work. She has dreams of creating a malnutrition treatment drone for the Dominican Republic, which would f ind malnutrition people and aid nutritional professionals in making an individualized nutritional plan for each malnourished person in need to then send food packages.

She volunteers at the food pantry at her school and she started “AskMabel” an app focused on teaching older adults about technology.

She hopes to use her degree in mathematics education (with a certif ication in special education and a concentration in English Language Learners) to teach mathematics to all students.

Victor Cruz

Along with his wife, who is also pursuing a masters in social work, his dream is to open his own practice. He was in the technology industry until he discovered the power of therapy and the need for therapy in the Dominican community. He volunteers every month for the Food Justice Coalition, contributing to the well-being of the unhoused population.

Weimy wants to create a center of performing arts dedicated to plays and musicals about Dominican legacy.

DOMINICAN DAY PARADE

The Dominican Day Parade, Inc. is a nonpartisan, 501(c)(3) nonprof it, that organizes the annual parade and festivities that promote the richness of the culture, folklore and popular traditions of the Dominican Republic.

The organization strives to provide an understanding of the heritage and contributions of the Dominican community in the United States of America and throughout the world

The National Dominican Day Parade’s (NatDDP) Scholarship Committee is honored each year with awarding scholarships and stipends to the best and brightest students of Dominican descent in the United States.
