The Festival Fever that drives us — to take on yet another workshop or performance or outreach to those underserved in our fabulous state, to take another newcomer under our wing and show them around, to stay up a little later sharing or creating for tomorrow’s class, to get up a bit earlier to collaborate with a new friend or an artist of a different discipline, or to walk in the woods hearing the birds’ contrapuntal Prelude, now seeing the essence of fireweed color, feeling the moisture of the trees breath and dance of the wind, inhaling a forest scent reminiscent of Spanish cooking spice. Connect with your inner artist, connect with nature, connect with something new and share the energy through your art. The arts have healing power. This year has economic challenges, I hear next year will have more. About the Cover Artist Sandra Westcott
Sandra is a Certified Zentangle Teacher. She teaches basic and advanced Zentangle workshops in Alaska and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her work has been exhibited in group shows and solo shows in Fairbanks and published in The Beauty of Zentangle, Zentangle 5, and Paper and Ink Arts blog. She is fond of telling her students “If it doesn’t move, it can be tangled.”

About FSAF The Festival’s mission is to provide highly qualified guest artists who offer multidisciplinary study and performance opportunities that increase both personal growth and arts appreciation to all participants. Our philosophy is to enrich the lives of all with whom we associate—through study and performances—by engaging their spirit, intellect and energy in an empowering way. The Festival gives people who are enthusiastic about the fine arts an outlet to release their passions. We offer classes and workshops at various ability levels, so beginners will find plenty to do. Given the multi-disciplinary nature of our course offerings, a participant with one main area of study has the opportunity to branch out and the explore other arts: a violinist can take ballroom dance before their orchestra rehearsals, or a painter can play in a steel drum band after spending all day in watercolor classes.

Honor the Founders
Jo Scott, Founder & Director Emerita A Fairbanks resident for 58 years, Jo Ryman Scott recently moved to New York City. Known as a passionate educator, she has received numerous awards for her contributions to arts and education including two Governors Awards for the Arts and an honorary Doctorate from the University of Alaska Fairbanks. She was selected to be inducted this year in the Alaska Women’s Hall of Fame. Jo began her teaching career more than 65 years ago in a little country school in South Dakota. In 2009, she retired after founding and producing the 30th season of the Fairbanks
Summer Arts Festival. She is grateful to her husband, Dick, for his support all these years. Ed Madden, Co-Founder & Emerita Jo Scott met Ed Madden in 1972 when he was teaching summer classes for the UAF Music Department. She decided Eddie might help her realize her dream of founding an arts Festival in Fairbanks. In 1980 the time was right for the plans to come to fruition showcasing Jazz Festival ‘80 in April. Festival will always remember Eddie’s critical role in its founding.
History
Jo Ryman Scott, Fairbanks, and Edward Madden, Boston, founded the Festival in April 1980 with the one-week Jazz Festival ‘80. In 1981, Scott and Madden successfully produced Jazz to Classics, the first two-week summer Festival. In 1982, the name was changed to the Fairbanks Summer Arts Festival because dance, opera, theatre, musical theatre and visual arts enthusiasts asked that those areas of study be added. Since that time, many disciplines have been added to the Festival, based on requests from registrants.

Suicide is a difficult and sensitive issue. The Arctic Resource Center for Suicide Prevention (ARCSP) seeks to foster a better understanding of suicide as a complex phenomenon. It does this by accessing a variety of sources—from the ancient to the modern; from science to art; from religious texts to philosophical treatises. ARCSP will be a safe place. Anyone may come in for help, counsel, study and research. Confidentiality will be fully assured except if there are threats to personal harm. Classes, lectures, courses, training and Arctic tours will be part of its regular scheduling.

Susan Hurley-Glowa teaches horn and ethnomusicology at the University of Texas Brownsville and UTPA. She studied horn at SUNY Potsdam (B.M.), University of Louisville (M.M.), and the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg, Germany. Her horn teachers include Roy Schaberg and the British soloist Ifor James. Susan has played with ensembles in the United States and Germany including the UTB Faculty Brass Quintet, Opera Fairbanks, Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of Northern New York and the Erie Chamber Orchestra.
Richard Tremarello, French horn, performs Broadway shows at Milwaukee’s Marcus Center for the Performing Arts, opera at Milwaukee’s Skylight Music Theatre and works regularly with the Green Bay Symphony. He worked on Broadway with Peter Pan and has toured with Cats and Jesus Christ Superstar in North America. Originally from Fairbanks, Richard holds degrees from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Arkansas State University and the University of North Texas.

Marcia continues to be involved in having new music written for the harp, mostly with her group The Debussy Trio. To date the Trio has commissioned and/or premiered 120 new works. Marcia plays actively in the studios in Los Angeles and has performed on more than 400 movies and can also be heard on the Family Guy, Revenge and Empire TV shows. She is an active teacher of both classical and folk harp.

A member of Hotel Elefant, Katie also is Executive Director of Wild Shore New Music in Homer, and Program Associate for Exploring the Metropolis in NYC. Major composers she has worked with include John Luther Adams, Richard Carrick, Conrad Winslow, and Jamie Stewart. Katie received her Bachelors of Music degree at Concordia College and Masters of Music Degree at the Bob Cole Conservatory.

Adventurer-Composer Stephen Lias has been Artist-in-Residence at Rocky Mountain, Denali, Glacier, and Gates of the Arctic National Parks. His compositions have been performed throughout the world including premieres of Mount Rainier Search and Rescue in Taiwan, Kings Canyon in Australia, and “Gates of the Arctic” by the Boulder Philharmonic in Colorado. The Timberline Sonata was featured in the Fall 2011 issue of National Parks Magazine and his upcoming CD includes new pieces about Yosemite, Mesa Verde, and Denali National Parks.
Kate has performed new and adventurous music with the Wordless Music Orchestra, Ensemble Signal, Alarm Will Sound, TILT Brass, Red Light New Music, the Orchestra of the SEM Ensemble, Ensemble LPR, Trinity Wall Street’s NOVUS NY, and more. Kate is currently the Provost and Dean at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Previously, she was on the horn faculty of Susquehanna University, Bucknell University, and Dickinson College, and was Assistant Dean at the Mannes School of Music. Kate holds degrees from Eastman and Yale, where she was lucky to meet a lot of lifelong friends and collaborators.

She is an avid performer, and is passionate about percussion in its various settings, from orchestral to world music.
Sherilyn’s love of music has taken her down several instrumental paths. She currently plays viola in the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra and directs a handbell choir at Christ Lutheran Church. Her day job is as a certified aromatherapist, while in her free time she loves to ride and show her horses, read, and do all kinds of needlework.

Currently she is retired and living on a lake in central Arkansas where she still performs and is a member of the American Guild of Organists.

Dawn Lindsay is one of Alaska’s leading violinists, enjoying a diverse career which includes orchestral, Broadway, baroque, chamber music and electric violin. As a baroque violinist, Dawn has performed with the Alaska Chamber Singer’s Bach Cantata series as well as the Anchorage Festival of Music Baroque Series. In 2010 and 2011, she traveled to Queens College Baroque Opera Festival in New York and Vancouver Early Music Festival in Canada to study Baroque violin, an opportunity made possible by a grant from the Alaska State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Raised in Fairbanks, Thom studied Neuroscience and Music at UAF and Rice University. He currently plays with the Anchorage Symphony and has a full violin/viola studio in Fairbanks.
Walter began studying when he was eight years old and was selected Concertmaster of the School Orchestra of America in 1965 as the youngest member of the tour. After undergraduate work at the University of Michigan, four years with the U.S. Air Force ensemble: Strolling Strings and completing his Masters at Catholic University of America, he began his Ph.D. at New York University where he also taught violin. Schwede served as Associate Concertmaster of the Seattle Symphony from 1984-1997. At Western Washington University Mr. Schwede teaches violin and is Coordinator of String Studies.

Kay DeCorso is currently Principal Clarinet with the Suncoast Symphony in Clearwater. She has taught at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, at the UAF Summer Fine Arts Camp and the Catholic Schools of Fairbanks, where she directed the program of instrumental music for over 15 years. She has maintained a private studio for over 30 years in Fairbanks and Dunedin, Florida.
Ted DeCorso has concertized internationally as chamber, orchestral and solo clarinetist. Over 30 concerto performances have been given with the Fairbanks Symphony and Arctic Chamber Orchestra. Recitals have been performed throughout Europe and at International Clarinet Congresses in London and Seattle. Ted was Professor of Music at the University of Alaska for 25 years and in Fairbanks directed the UAF Summer Fine Arts Camp and the Fairbanks Youth Orchestra. He now teaches at the University of Tampa and conducts the Suncoast Symphony and the Clearwater Community Band.
Michele Gingras is Distinguished Professor of Clarinet at Miami University (OH) where she was named Curry Distinguished Educator and Distinguished Scholar of the Graduate Faculty. She performed and taught masterclasses worldwide, released over a dozen CDs, wrote 200 articles and reviews for numerous international publications, and authored two books: Clarinet Secrets and More Clarinet Secrets (Scarecrow Press). She performed with the Cincinnati Klezmer Project for 20 years and concertizes with Duo2go and Miami3 throughout the US.

After receiving her Bachelor’s Degree in Oboe Performance from Cleveland State University, she joined the US Army Bands and was appointed principal oboist with the 76th U.S. Army Band in Kaiserslautern, West Germany.
George Rydlinski is originally from Chicago, Illinois. He completed undergraduate studies in music performance at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb in 1980. He enlisted in the Army as a bassoonist in 1983 and retired as the First Sergeant and Enlisted Bandleader of the 9th Army Band at Ft. Wainwright in 2004. He currently works for the Fairbanks Symphony Association as the marketing director. He has performed as principal bassoonist with the Fairbanks Symphony and Arctic Chamber Orchestras since the fall of 1996.

Ryan Bowers is a bassist and singer/songwriter from Fairbanks. He studied voice at UAF, and bass and songwriting at Berklee School Of Music. Ryan has experience in a wide variety of roots styles, including bluegrass, old-time, country, folk, and contra dance, as well as in rock, indie, jazz, pop and chamber music styles.
Emy Phelps is a remarkable vocalist/guitarist and a star in the Pacific Northwest who put her career on hold to raise four kids and is now back in the game. She was a founding member of Brian Ransom’s Ceramic Ensemble, touring internationally from 1980–1987. As a member of that ensemble she did research on indigenous music in Peru, and obtaining a degree in education, teaching at elementary and middle schools and successfully raising children, but now her public work continues as a recording artist, a member of the Furies, and as a duet with Darol Anger.
Jacob Ransom is a well-known and familiar local drummer, teacher, percussionist, and world music aficionado within the Fairbanks community. Jacob was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, moved to the beautiful town of Ashland Oregon where he was raised and received his bachelors of music degree from Southern Oregon University. Jacob is currently a graduate teaching assistant at the University Alaska of Fairbanks Alaska studying percussion performance with Dr. Morris Palter.

Isaac Alderson grew up in Chicago, surrounded by all kinds of music. Warren Fraser has been the Pipe Major of the Fairbanks Red Hackle Pipe Band since 1999. He has been piping since 1972. The Band’s CD Under the Northern Lights is available locally. Warren has lived in Fairbanks for 45 years and teaches piping to potential band members. The award-winning Red Hackle Band has competed in Alaska, Hawaii, Washington, Yukon and British Columbia. The band has 28 members from age 12 to mid-70s.
Former lead of Riverdance and co-creator of the groundbreaking dance group Hammerstep, Jason is originally from Sydney, Australia, where he won won 5 consecutive State and National Solo Irish dancing titles from 19992003. He also performed in the Opening Ceremony of the Sydney Olympics (alongside Tap Dogs) in 2000 at just 15 years of age. In early 2004, Jason joined the world famous Riverdance and toured as principle lead dancer for seven years, performing in over 40 countries and for notable leaders including The Empress of Japan and Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard.

Her passion for cooking stems from the early days of childhood, watching her grandmother cook. Jo’s mother, Asha Lal, is also an accomplished cook having taught Asian and Oriental Cooking through the Tanana Valley community college for sixteen years. Good food and cooking is a journey and one that is continuously evolving and changing.
Jeremy Howard is currently a breakfast cook at the Oasis Restaurant. He has been cooking most of his life. Some of his best dishes are pastas and sauces and many different appetizers such as Italian sausage stuffed mushrooms and mozzarella meatballs, and, of course, soups. He’s been making soups from pretty much whatever is on-hand for years. Jeremy enjoys creating new soups and variations of standard recipes. He really enjoys sharing what he knows with others and especially loves sharing good food with good people, friends and family.
Kathy Lavelle is a 36 year resident of Fairbanks. She is a University of Alaska graduate. Upon graduation she opened a small restaurant, Cafe de Paris, which has now grown and become a downtown icon, Lavelle’s Bistro. She is married to Frank Eagle and has one daughter, Arlette. In her spare time she trains her shetland sheepdogs in agility. She loves wine and is a Certified Wine Professional from the Culinary Institute of America and a Certified Specialist of Wine from the Society of Wine Educators.
Julia started cooking in Greece as a child with her grandmother who passed on her passion for simple well prepared food. Arriving in Alaska in 1971 she quickly developed a reputation as a home chef. In 2010 health issues caused her to begin learning a better way to cook vegetarian, vegan and raw food. She opened Julia’s Solstice Cafe on 1/1/11 to offer well prepared locally grown food, specializing in gourmet vegetarian and vegan cuisine with a Greek and International flavor. She is currently assisting the staff of LUNCH Cafe and Eatery with GF recipe development.
Tana is 100% Cajun, has a BS in Microbiology, a Master’s of Public Health, and loves feeding people. Food is always involved when two or more Cajun’s are socializing. Cooking and eating Cajun food with her large extended family was always an event. This love of sharing food led to Tana’s father’s dream of opening a family Cajun restaurant being realized in 1995. This is the year Daigle’s Cajun Connection Seafood and Steak Restaurant opened its doors in Egan, Louisiana. The family restaurant prided itself in serving Cajun food cooked by REAL CAJUNS.

Vocal coach and pianist Timothy Cheek is Associate Professor of Performing Arts at the University of Michigan. There he serves as music director of Opera Workshop, teaches French, German, and Italian lyric diction classes, and is a coach for opera productions. He is also an Associate Faculty member of the University’s Center for Russian and East European Studies, and teaches a Czech Vocal Literature course for singers and pianists. Dr. Cheek has performed as a collaborative pianist in recitals and opera in eighteen countries on four continents.
Rebecca Renfro Grimes possesses a versatile artistry that spans from teaching to directing to performing. Her directing credits include Lone Star Lyric Opera, Greater Worcester Opera, Opera del West, University of Connecticut Opera Theater, and Sam Houston State University Opera, where she is a member of the faculty. Her watercolors and kilnformed glass works are always on display there and have been exhibited in several solo and group exhibitions.
Jill Marshall came to Alaska in 1975 for a three month stay that never ended. She has successfully taught hundreds of students how fun watercolor can be. A gifted teacher, Jill uses innovative methods to help you develop the artist within you and have a great time doing it!
Debbie has worked with stained glass since 1974, and has accomplished many projects over the years. After moving to Fairbanks and finding no place to buy glass, she felt the need to have stained glass re-introduced. Debbie opened Expressions in Glass in April of 1992.
Tom Nixon teaches watercolor and drawing privately in his studio in Hamilton Acres. He and his wife Nelda travel throughout the state in the summer months; painting and making new friends. Susan Joy Share is an artist, bookbinder and performer. She has exhibited, taught and performed internationally and across the US. Her artwork is in numerous collections including the Victoria and Albert Museum, the National Museum of Women in the Arts and the Anchorage Museum. She has created public artwork for Anchorage’s 1% for Art Program and received grants from the Rasmuson Foundation and the Alaska State Council on the Arts.
Leslie Shirah is a professional artist and educator living in Columbus, Georgia. She received her MFA in sculpture from East Carolina University in Greenville, North Carolina. Resourcing local natural materials, papermaking, and the connection to personal memories influence the direction of her work. Leslie has exhibited her work nationally and is a contributing artist to the School of Art and Design at East Carolina University’s permanent collection. She has lead workshops in both papermaking and ceramics and presented at the Sculpture Consortium of North Carolina in 2009.
Sandra is a Certified Zentangle Teacher. She teaches basic and advanced Zentangle workshops in Alaska and Santa Fe, New Mexico. Her work has been exhibited in group shows and solo shows in Fairbanks and published in The Beauty of Zentangle, Zentangle 5, and Paper and Ink Arts blog. She is fond of telling her students “If it doesn’t move, it can be tangled.”
Vladimir was born and received his fine art education in Russia, specializing in watercolor, acrylic and oil painting. A Professional artist, he has had numerous exhibitions in Russia and 14 solo exhibitions in various galleries in Alaska. As a Plein Air artist and recipient of the 2008 Rasmuson Foundation Artist Fellowship Award, he travels and paints Alaska from Ketchikan to Dutch Harbor. Vladimir is also well-known as a 15 times Gold Medal winner in International Ice Sculpture Championships around the World.

Her energetic dance teaching style emphasizes respectful communication and partnering and has earned her a place as a Teaching Artist with the Alaska State Council on the Arts.
Ms. Jelínková received her early training at the National Conservatory of Dance in Prague. Upon graduation, she was invited to join the Opera Ballet of the National Theatre in Prague, where she danced and toured worldwide for ten years. Slávka taught extensively in the Czech Republic, including at the National Conservatory of Dance. In 1999 Slávka moved to Michigan, where she continued to perform as a free-lance artist with Michigan area choreographers, and serves on the faculties of the Flint School of Performing Arts, the Ann Arbor Arts in Motion, and the University of Michigan.

Judy received her Masters in Dance Education from Stanford. She has taught and performed in Cuba, Colorado, California and throughout Alaska. She received grants to study dance in The Gambia, West Africa and in Cuba and she continues to travel to Cuba to pursue research in the history of Cuban Music and Dance. Sharing history, culture and the joy of dancing are her goals in her classes. Currently residing in Boulder, Colorado she is teaching classes and workshops in a variety of dance styles to children and adults.
Dustin Madden, tango

Dustin was raised in Nome, Alaska, and began dancing as a college student in California, where he performed waltz and square dancing. Dustin started learning Argentine Tango in Buenos Aires in 2007 where he immersed himself in the traditional “milonguero” style that emphasizes a comfortable connection, rhythmic musicality, and steps made for social dancing. He and his partner Katie have taught tango and other social dances as UAA adjunct faculty, and for a variety of dance communities throughout Alaska, and most recently, at MIT in Boston.

Terri Massa has studied the folk dances of the Middle East for the last 27 years. Her current focus is on Persian Classical Dance and the folk dances of Iran. She is the founder of Tundra Caravan and is currently the co-director of Cold Fusion Tribal Dance and a member of Simorgh-Farima Dance Company of Alaska, a Persian dance company.

Susan Hurley-Glowa teaches horn and ethnomusicology at the University of Texas Brownsville and UTPA. She studied horn at SUNY Potsdam (B.M.), University of Louisville (M.M.), and the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik in Freiburg, Germany. Her horn teachers include Roy Schaberg and the British soloist Ifor James. Susan has played with ensembles in the United States and Germany including the UTB Faculty Brass Quintet, Opera Fairbanks, Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra of Northern New York and the Erie Chamber Orchestra.
Richard Tremarello, French horn, performs Broadway shows at Milwaukee’s Marcus Center for the Performing Arts, opera at Milwaukee’s Skylight Music Theatre and works regularly with the Green Bay Symphony. He worked on Broadway with Peter Pan and has toured with Cats and Jesus Christ Superstar in North America. Originally from Fairbanks, Richard holds degrees from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, Arkansas State University and the University of North Texas.

Marcia continues to be involved in having new music written for the harp, mostly with her group The Debussy Trio. To date the Trio has commissioned and/or premiered 120 new works. Marcia plays actively in the studios in Los Angeles and has performed on more than 400 movies and can also be heard on the Family Guy, Revenge and Empire TV shows. She is an active teacher of both classical and folk harp.

Adventurer-Composer Stephen Lias has been Artist-in-Residence at Rocky Mountain, Denali, Glacier, and Gates of the Arctic National Parks. His compositions have been performed throughout the world including premieres of Mount Rainier Search and Rescue in Taiwan, Kings Canyon in Australia, and “Gates of the Arctic” by the Boulder Philharmonic in Colorado. The Timberline Sonata was featured in the Fall 2011 issue of National Parks Magazine and his upcoming CD includes new pieces about Yosemite, Mesa Verde, and Denali National Parks.
Kate has performed new and adventurous music with the Wordless Music Orchestra, Ensemble Signal, Alarm Will Sound, TILT Brass, Red Light New Music, the Orchestra of the SEM Ensemble, Ensemble LPR, Trinity Wall Street’s NOVUS NY, and more. Kate is currently the Provost and Dean at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Previously, she was on the horn faculty of Susquehanna University, Bucknell University, and Dickinson College, and was Assistant Dean at the Mannes School of Music. Kate holds degrees from Eastman and Yale, where she was lucky to meet a lot of lifelong friends and collaborators.

Andie is primarily a violinist specializing in new and experimental music. As a soloist and through her ensembles Redshift, TRANSIT, and Hotel Elefant, Andie has commissioned and premiered numerous works by young and established composers alike. A native of Alaska herself, Andie is a cofounder of Wild Shore New Music—a presenting organization dedicated to bringing adventurous new chamber music to the communities in and around Kachemak Bay, Alaska. Andie earned her BFA at Carnegie Mellon University, and her MFA at New York University.

Through a combination of original music, improvisation and collaboration with leading composers of his generation, Owen’s performances combine the forces of rhythm, noise, beauty and stasis while seeking the musical potential in everyday life. He uses recycled objects, homemade instruments and electronic sounds to construct a kaleidoscopic sound world. A passionate educator, Owen is a teaching artist for both the West Side YMCA and the 92nd Street YMCA, and has taught at Yale, Cornell, CalArts, Texas Lutheran University, the University of Texas at Austin, the Hartt School and Rikers Island Correctional Facility.

A lifelong Californian, Niamh came to Alaska in 2015 to pursue her Masters in Percussion Performance at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. She is currently a graduate teaching assistant as well as the instructor of the World Beat Ensemble, and the Interrelation of Arts and Drama. She is an avid performer, and is passionate about percussion in its various settings, from orchestral to world music.
Sherilyn’s love of music has taken her down several instrumental paths. She currently plays viola in the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra and directs a handbell choir at Christ Lutheran Church. Her day job is as a certified aromatherapist, while in her free time she loves to ride and show her horses, read, and do all kinds of needlework.

James Yoshizawa is a Los Angeles-based drummer, percussionist and educator. He holds a B.M. in Percussion Performance from CSU Long Beach and has studied many instruments including drumset, mallet percussion, hand percussion (congas, bongos, bones, pandeiro, frame drums, riq), and orchestral percussion. He has performed with many great artists such as Brad Dutz, Katisse Buckingham, Ron Stout, Chris Wabich and Michael Carney.

Lorna Eder received her doctorate degree in keyboard collaborative arts from the University of Southern California in May 2012. She came from Los Angeles to Fairbanks in January 2011 to join the UAF music faculty as the department collaborative pianist. Teresa has a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance with a minor in voice and oboe from the University of Northern Iowa. In addition she studied accompanying classes during her undergraduate work. Her work in Washington includes playing for students that have won the Musicfest competition in Spokane, performing within the Yakima Symphony, and numerous student recitals at CWU. She is also on the music faculty at Central Washington University, where she teaches piano classes. In addition she has maintained a private piano studio for over thirty years.

Organist and educator, Karen has played both solo recitals and with orchestras in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Alaska. Her organ studies began at University of Central Arkansas and continued with graduate work at the University of Oklahoma. Following the earning of a Master of Music in Vocal Pedagogy from Louisiana State University, she was active both as an organist and choir director in churches for 45 years and as a public and private music teacher in grades K-12. Currently she is retired and living on a lake in central Arkansas where she still performs and is a member of the American Guild of Organists.

Ian is the founder and director of the Northern California’s Trinity Alps Chamber Music Festival and he is a founding member of the San Francisco’s Oak Street Trio and Nonsemble Six. He also participates in the Astoria Music Festival in Oregon and the Telluride Chamber Music Festival in Colorado. Ian is currently a staff accompanist and coach at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. He earned a BM in Piano Performance from Willamette University, and at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music earned an MM in Piano and an Artist’s Certificate in Chamber Music.

Jennifer performs with the Boise Philharmonic and the Boise Baroque Orchestra in addition to acting as director of Boise’s City of Trees Chamber Music series. She also directs the Serenata Chamber Orchestra, and founded Idaho Viola Camp, the largest and most fun camp for violists in the Northwest. She teaches over 50 private viola students. She has performed at the 33rd International Viola Congress.

An enthusiastic and devoted teacher, Genualdi has served on the faculties of Yale University, the University of Oregon, DePaul University, California State University–Northridge, and The University of North Carolina School of the Arts. He is currently Professor of Violin at the University of MissouriKansas City Conservatory of Music and Dance. Genualdi, who won first prize in the Hudson Valley Philharmonic International String Competition, continues his career as soloist in frequent concerto performances and duo recitals.

Hailed by Cincinnati City Beat as “extraordinarily evocative” for his performances, Bryan has enjoyed success as both a performer and teacher. He has performed in such venues as the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, and the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing, China. Recently Dr. Hall has joined the faculty at The University of Alaska, Fairbanks as the violin/viola professor and pedagogy coordinator. He also serves as Concertmaster of the Fairbanks Symphony Orchestra.

Violist Maureen Heflinger is a multifaceted performer and educator who feels equally at home premiering new works, leading a viola sectional, and getting in and out of a headstand. After growing up in Fairbanks and attending New England Conservatory, Maureen enjoys a varied freelance career in Boston, where recent solo and chamber music performances have included appearances on the Arbor Day recital series and with new music ensemble Alea III. Maureen is currently on faculty at the Josiah Quincy Orchestra Program.

Brian is an active soloist, chamber musician, and teacher. Brian is Associate Professor of Cello and Coordinator of Chamber Music at Boise State University and is principal of the Boise Baroque Orchestra. He studied at the Eastman School of Music earning his Bachelor of Music in cello performance and stayed on to complete his Master of Music in cello performance where he was the teaching assistant to Marcy Rosen. He received his Doctor of Musical Arts in cello performance from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

Kathryn Hoffer, a graduate of the Eastman School of Music, recently retired following a successful 40-year career as an educator in school orchestra and private studio settings. She is the director of the Society of Strings, an orchestra for intermediate level adult musicians, and is responsible for the orchestra program at Hiland Mountain Correctional Institution. Ms. Hoffer has been a member of the Anchorage Symphony Orchestra since 1974 and concertmaster since 1983. She also plays for the Anchorage Opera, Anchorage Concert Chorus and Alaska Chamber Singers.

As an active educator in Alaska, Karl helped found the Alaska Cello Intensive. Karl graduated with his Master and Doctorate of Music degrees from University of WisconsinMadison. Dawn Lindsay is one of Alaska’s leading violinists, enjoying a diverse career which includes orchestral, Broadway, baroque, chamber music and electric violin. As a baroque violinist, Dawn has performed with the Alaska Chamber Singer’s Bach Cantata series as well as the Anchorage Festival of Music Baroque Series. In 2010 and 2011, she traveled to Queens College Baroque Opera Festival in New York and Vancouver Early Music Festival in Canada to study Baroque violin, an opportunity made possible by a grant from the Alaska State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Raised in Fairbanks, Thom studied Neuroscience and Music at UAF and Rice University. He currently plays with the Anchorage Symphony and has a full violin/viola studio in Fairbanks.
Walter began studying when he was eight years old and was selected Concertmaster of the School Orchestra of America in 1965 as the youngest member of the tour. After undergraduate work at the University of Michigan, four years with the U.S. Air Force ensemble: Strolling Strings and completing his Masters at Catholic University of America, he began his Ph.D. at New York University where he also taught violin. Schwede served as Associate Concertmaster of the Seattle Symphony from 1984-1997. At Western Washington University Mr. Schwede teaches violin and is Coordinator of String Studies.
Paul Sharpe, double bass

Paul is the Artist-Teacher of Double Bass at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, and is active internationally as an orchestral and chamber musician and as a soloist. In the past several years he has performed in recital and presented masterclasses at Brazil’s International Double Bass Encounter, France’s Bass2008, the World Bass Festival in Poland, many national and regional double bass symposiums, the Cleveland Institute, the University of Iowa, the University of Michigan, University of North Texas, and Interlochen Arts Academy.
