PACT – our Festival Charity

PACT was founded in 1911 and has been supporting and strengthening families ever since. Today, PACT is one of the leading and most successful adoption charities in the country placing more children with ‘forever families’ than any other adoption agency. As well as delivering efficient and effective adoption and fostering services they provide award winning specialist therapeutic support.

PACT families adopt children who have been at risk and removed from their birth families following neglect or physical, emotional or sexual abuse, a challenging start in life that often leads to chronic childhood trauma and attachment disorders.

PACT families are supported for life and money raised from Dorchester Festival will fund this commitment in the Oxfordshire area, supporting them so that children and parents can enjoy the happy family life that they deserve.

John Rutter Come & Sing

John Rutter, one of the UK’s foremost choral composers, will lead a Come & Sing day in Dorchester Abbey.

John started composing in his teens and his work includes choral, orchestral and instrumental pieces, a piano concerto, two children’s operas, music for television and specialist writing for such groups as the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble and the King’s Singers.

The Tallis Scholars Tintinnabuli

The internationally acclaimed Tallis Scholars combine their perfect a capella sound with the fabulous Dorchester Abbey acoustics to make this the unmissable concert of the Festival week. With over 1900 concerts and a catalogue of award-winning recordings, Peter Phillips and The Tallis Scholars have done more than any other group to establish sacred vocal music of the Renaissance as one of the great repertoires of Western classical music.

In Dorchester they will perform music from their new album celebrating Arvo Pärt’s 80th birthday and some repertoire favourites including the superb Allegri Miserere.

This concert was sold out in 2009 so please buy your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

He collaborated with Willcocks on the four-volume Carols for Choirs, an indispensable compendium for choristers around the world, and he has written several longer-form works that have become popular favourites, including his Requiem, Gloria and Magnificat.

For many choirs, however, no Christmas is complete without a Rutter carol.

John invites you to sing a mixture of choral music old and new, familiar and unfamiliar, with some of his own work included and a few surprises.

Copies will be provided and also available for sale. Enthusiastic singers of all levels are welcome to a hugely enjoyable day with this inspirational teacher.

Little Bo Peep – Children’s Theatre Sea Legs Theatre

Little Bo Peep has lost her sheep and doesn’t know where to find them. Her friend Little Boy Blue is doing his best to help find the woolly runaways but he keeps falling asleep.

Meanwhile, The Nursery Rhyme Man is in his kitchen baking a surprise cake for Little Bo Peep’s birthday. As he works a naughty mouse keeps stealing the ingredients.

With years of experience and over 2,500 shows worldwide, Dizzy Dean’s hilarious magic show is great entertainment for children and adults alike!

Dorchester Duck Race Buy a duck to launch down the river from the Hurst Water Meadow to a nail biting finish next to the Abbey. Prizes for the first three ducks home! Buy and decorate your duck during Tentertainment so that you can spot it crossing the line. Ducks £3 (£8 for 3) available to purchase in advance in Dorchester or from the Tent during the afternoon.

Comic Art Masterclass Kev F Sutherland

Comedian, writer, producer and comic artist Kev F writes & draws the Bash St Kids adventures in The Beano and has worked for Marvel Comics, Viz, Dr Who and Red Dwarf.

Clowning workshop Hot Coals Theatre Ensemble

Come and play with the performers of Hot Coals Theatre Ensemble in this 2 hour workshop focusing on clowning and le jeu (the game of theatre). Festival Theatre Comedy – Storm in a Teacup Hot Coals Theatre Ensemble

Storm in a Teacup is a funny and touching journey through afternoon tea rituals, birthday cakes and chamber pots of three old sisters. This darkly comic and cartoon-like piece is a window into the quirky and tender Chaplinesque world of three sisters in their 80’s as they fight the system to keep their independence.

In a world where words have lost their place, physical comedy, walking sticks and false teeth come to life. This production has no dialogue and shares its story through beautifully choreographed set pieces to music, physical comedy, clowning, physical theatre and larger than life characters.

Ben Morris – CGI, OSCAR, Star Wars and me BAFTA and OSCAR award winning Visual Effects expert Ben Morris explains how CGI effects are created with clips from his work including Harry Potter, The Golden Compass, War Horse and Gravity.

Ben also has a powerful personal story – inspired aged 7 by the original Stars Wars film at his local cinema to his current role as Creative Director for Lucas Films ILM. The studio is presently working on The Avengers 2 and Star Wars Episode: VII. His comments on unreleased films will be restricted by confidentiality agreements!

Carrie Fertig

Food Fair

Carrie Fertig is an artist and educator exploring the meeting of performance, craft, and technology. She uses flameworked glass in a collaborative inter-disciplinary practice incorporating sound, light, music, technology, film, fire, and interactive engagement methods.

Welcome to Dorchester’s celebration of everything food and wine!

Carrie will be working with schools and other groups throughout Festival week.

Together they will create a glass installation containing different concepts of the word spirit which will be on public exhibition in the Abbey space.

Exhibition open Wed 6th May - Sun 10th May (excl Festival events) Dorchester Abbey Soul Shapes: A reflective evening workshop with Carrie Fertig and Canon Sue Booys will create artwork around the exploration of the word spirit and its spiritual context. The artwork made will be part of a larger glass sculpture on view during the Festival.

Cookery Demonstrations Throughout the Food Fair weekend we are holding a variety of cookery demonstrations in some of the most impressive home kitchens in Dorchester.

Stress-Free Dining to Impress with Nick Galer

Nick demonstrates delicious elegant food to impress your guests using restaurant techniques to take the stress out of hosting.

Nick’s passion for food led him from the French Alps to opening the Crown at Bray as Head Chef for Heston Blumenthal. He now operates The Miller of Mansfield (nearby in Goring) with his wife Mary from where they serve simple but elegant food with great respect for the raw product.

This will be an intimate session in the beautiful surroundings of a medieval kitchen so spaces are very limited - book early!

Christine Wallace BakeOff Demonstration

In 2012, Christine’s home-baking skills were put to the test in front of the nation on the hit series Great British Bakeoff. She did amazingly well winning the accolade of star baker twice and reaching the Quarter Finals. Since then Christine has been busy demonstrating, judging and of course still baking every day at home.

She also has her own radio show on BBC Radio Oxford co-presenting with Phil Mercer.

Demonstrating in the beautiful setting of the Manor House kitchen, Christine will take you through a baking masterclass including a showstopper dessert and creative ideas for you to bake at home .

Giancarlo and Katie Caldesi – Venice Recipes Lost and Found

Giancarlo, restaurateur met Katie, artist in 1997. He loved her painting, she loved his pasta. They now have two restaurants, a cookery school and two sons and are considered the experts on Tuscan cooking.

Since “Return to Tuscany” was aired in 2006 Katie and Giancarlo have become regulars on Market Kitchen, BBC Masterchef, BBC Breakfast and more recently Saturday Kitchen.

This 1 hour demonstration and discussion will focus on recipes from their latest book of the same title.

Mrs Bun the Baker – Cookery workshops for children

Mrs Bun the Baker runs cookery courses for toddlers to teens developing an early love of food and healthy eating. Building confidence and skills in the kitchen, children express their creativity and are proud of their achievements.

Bring your aspiring little chef to the Village Hall kitchen for a one hour hands-on cooking class with Mrs Bun, whilst you relax and enjoy a cup of coffee and watch them create a mouth-watering treat for you to take away.

10.00am & 11.30am -Toddler class for ages 2-5 A special one hour Afternoon Tea baking session for older children to learn some great baking techniques that they can replicate at home. Children can be left at this session unaccompanied stirring up some magic in the kitchen to impress you on your return.

Continuing the annual tradition Dorchester’s a capella group will welcome May in by singing from the Abbey tower and then in the Abbey. Proceeds from this event go to The Noah’s Ark Project for AIDS orphans in Kenya and this year’s charity PACT. Folk Night with Harry Bird and the Rubber Wellies Hoo ha! Hoo hoo ha! Travelling folksters Harry Bird and the Rubber Wellies present their intimate cabaret of joyful sing-a-long choruses and general participatory fun.

Pirates, lizards, cracks in the wall and Basque cyclists all inhabit the songscape.

Based in Bilbao, Newcastle and Dublin they have spent the last six years touring Ireland, the UK and mainland Europe playing bars, cafes, libraries, churches, theatres, circus galas, festivals and folk clubs alike.

Their debut album “Long Way to Be Free” appeared in 2009, followed by “The Bones on Black” in 2012. They released a 7” single “Kettle of Silver” in 2013 as well as working closely with Gwyneth Herbert on her album “The Sea Cabinet”.

Maki Sekiya & Charlotte Tetley A global musical “Tour de Force”

by rising star mezzo soprano Charlotte Tetley and Japanese virtuoso pianist Maki Sekiya.

Maki Sekiya has had a successful international career based in Russia and in Japan. She has recently made sensational appearances around the UK, including with OSJ, following our 2013 Festival.

Charlotte spent two years with Glyndeboune following her training at The Royal Academy and now performs throughout the UK, particularly following her passion for Lieder.

VE Day concert - BBC Elstree and the Military Wives Choir V for Victory

Get those flags out and join a joyful celebration of the 70th anniversary of VE Day, with favourite tunes by Glenn Miller, Vera Lynn, Elgar, Verdi and Ivor Novello.

With the impressive sound of the 48 piece Elstree Concert Band and the 30 strong Military Wives Choir, Shrivenham, this will be a real night to remember!

Taylor Glenn is an award winning American comedian based in the UK. After winning the Welsh Unsigned Stand Up Award in 2010, she has gone on to perform in 9 countries and all over the UK. Her solo show, Reverse Psycomedy, made its successful Edinburgh debut in 2012 and Taylor is now developing several sitcom and feature film scripts

Tom Goodliffe

Emerging from the renowned comedy hotbed of accountancy, award-winning comedian Tom Goodliffe has quickly made a name for himself with his unique blend of smart gags, charming storytelling and a hugely likeable stage persona.

Dan is an award winning Welsh comic who performs at all the UK’s high profile venues such as The Glee Clubs, Highlights, The Comedy Store, Komedia. He has also made appearances at several festivals including Green Man, and supported Russell Kane on his national tour of the Perrier Award winning show “Smokescreens and Castles” and “Manscaping”. As well as stand up, Dan works as a TV warm up artiste for several shows.

Refreshments Excellent cake, coffee, tea and simple lunches will be served by our amazing volunteers at weekends throughout the Festival from behind the Abbey.

The Festival food fair (Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th May) will serve a great range of street cuisine, cake and specialist coffees all day.

The Abbey tearooms will be open from 2.30pm to 5pm as usual.

Wine or tea will be served at every Festival event interval.

All proceeds from Tent and interval refreshments will go to the Festival charities.

Busking in the Abbey Dorchester Duo 1pm

Returning by popular demand - Charles James on guitar and Sharon Warnes on violin: together they perform an eclectic mix of well-known music encompassing a wide range of genres and styles.

Dorchester Abbey Choir 2pm

The renowned Abbey Choir sing their favourite pieces from Baroque to Rutter including some unexpected surprises!

Conducted by the Abbey organist, Jeremy Boughton, the choir sing for Abbey services, weddings and concerts throughout the year.

Cat’s Chorus 3pm

Cat’s Chorus is a popular a capella group based in Crowmarsh, near Wallingford, that perform regularly in and around Oxfordshire.

Conducted by professional mezzo-soprano, Elinor Carter, they put their own take on a variety of popular songs from Jazz, Pop, Folk and Musicals.

Workshops

If you’re a big fan why not take advantage of a great opportunity to join an afternoon workshop with the group and then take part in the evening performance?

As part of each workshop the group is split up and taught the music, lyrics and choreography to one of the OOTB songs. It will end by putting all the parts together and staging the number.

Workshop attendees will be invited onstage to perform the song with OOTB at the evening performance!
