ime un número… ¡Te lo ganaste! Un viaje en el tiempo a un lugar que abrazará tu alma. Bienvenidos al balcón donde reíste a carcajadas y te asomaste a comprobar si llegó justo esa persona que querías que llegara. Las construcciones de residencias modernas parecen haber olvidado el balcón, el recibidor por excelencia en millones de casas en el país. Casa que se preciara de una arquitectura tropical contaba con un balcón que fungiera como recibidor y transición hacia el interior. El típico balcón de hace unos años albergaba plantas –apuesto a que alguna sería colgante–, sillones para mecer los pensamientos y balaustres o rejas para delimitar el espacio. El balcón era la primera parada de un hogar, traspasarlo requería ganar confianza, respetar a la familia. Algunos novios no sobrevivieron el balcón. Jamás avanzaron un paso ni a la residencia, ni a la familia, ni a su relación amorosa. Algunas vecinas tenían membresía fija en el balcón, arribaban cuando la pesada jornada diaria acababa y entre conversaciones aliviaban el día. Para muchos amigos fue el punto de encuentro, especialmente cuando no había permiso para salir o, por el contrario, cuando lo había, era el espacio del “Bendición, me voy, llego a las 12”.

An Ode to el Balcón Guess the number I’m thinking of... You got it! You win a trip back in time to a place that will warm your soul. Welcome to the front porch where you laughed until your stomach hurt or sat waiting for that special someone to arrive. Modern home design seems to have forgotten el balcón, the vestibule par excellence in millions of homes across the island. Any house boasting tropical architecture featured a porch that served as a foyer and passageway to the interior. The typical Puerto Rican porch of yesteryear contained plants –including some vines, of course– rocking chairs to lull our thoughts, and balustrades or fences to delimit the space. This porch was the first stop of a home; to go beyond it, you had to be respectful and earn the family’s trust. Some suitors didn’t survive the front porch and never made it into the home, family, or to the relationship. Some neighbors had a permanent membership on our porch: always there at the end of the workday, chatting away our stress. For many, it was the place to meet friends when someone didn’t have permission to go out, otherwise it was where we stepped out with a “Bendición, I’ll be back before midnight.” GUAYNABO BOUND

C La sala y la terraza habrán reclamado la atención de la visita, pero el balcón siempre les llevaba la delantera. Era un imán poderoso. Si bordeaba gran parte de la estructura, ofrecía un generoso espacio para el juego, las mascotas, los muebles de patio y hasta la decoración navideña. Los balcones chiquititos, reducidos a un rectángulo mínimo, guardaban un increíble poder de multiplicación del área porque, por momentos, se apretaban en ellos la visita, los que vivían en la casa y hasta el vecinito que nadie supo cuándo llegó. Si el balcón estaba en un segundo piso, el deleite era mayor. En los cascos urbanos era el punto de reunión de las fiestas patronales para cumplir una meta específica: ver y dejarse ver. Durante las visitas festivas, en alguna casa de tu ruta habrá sobrevivido un balcón listo para acaparar la brisa, atestiguar las primeras sonrisas de los visitantes y el preciado lujo de estar juntos. Vívelo, otra vez.

The living room and terrace caught the attention of our guests, but the front porch was always one step ahead. It was a powerful magnet. When wrapping around a large portion of the structure, it provided ample space for games, pets, patio furniture, and even holiday decorations. Tiny porches, barely spanning a tiny rectangle, had an incredible expandability, sometimes able to accommodate all of our guests, household members, and even the neighbor’s kid who snuck in unnoticed. If on the second floor, it was even more delightful. During patron saint festivals in the heart of the town, el balcón was THE place to be, with one specific goal: to see and be seen. Among the houses on your vacation itinerary, there must be at least one of these surviving porches, ready to catch the breeze and bear witness to the first smiles of its visitors and the cherished privilege of being together. La casona en Media Luna y la historia de los Nevares

l piso de madera cruje… y uno piensa si se aventura a caminar por los antiguos espacios de la residencia o si solo la mira de lejos. Luego del miedo inicial, uno se atreve y puede ver, a través de sus puertas amplias, el cauce del Río La Plata y extensiones de terreno que van hasta la autopista PR-22 (expreso José de Diego). No cabe duda de que, en sus tiempos, esta fue una gran residencia: la casona de la Hacienda Media Luna en Toa Baja. En estas tierras Héctor G. Nevares Guillermety comenzó, desde su bicicleta, a regalar leche a los vecinos. Con el tiempo se convirtió en el negocio Suiza Dairy, productora local de leche. Pero en la década de 1990, Nevares vendió la empresa a un grupo inversionista en Estados Unidos. (Hoy, la empresa peruana Grupo Gloria es propietaria de Suiza Dairy). De lo que se sabe, la Hacienda Media Luna fue establecida por Cipriano Nevares a finales del 1700 o inicios de 1800. Hoy, Oscar Nevares es el dueño de la casona en Media Luna, mientras que su hijo Héctor Nevares corre el negocio. La vaquería tiene terrenos tanto en Media Luna, Toa Baja, como en el sector Guácaros en Dorado. 32

Intertwined Stories: The Manor of Media Luna and the Nevares Family The wooden floor creaks, and you wonder if you should enter the old house or just admire it from a distance. After the initial trepidation, you go for it, and through its wide doors, you can see the banks of Río La Plata and tracts of land extending all the way to highway PR-22 (José de Diego Expressway). In its heyday, it was undoubtedly a grand residence: the manor of Hacienda Media Luna in Toa Baja. It was in these lands that Héctor G. Nevares Guillermety started out, distributing milk to the neighbors on his bicycle. Over time, this became Suiza Dairy, a local milk production business. But in the 1990s, Nevarez sold the business to an investment group in the United States. (Suiza Dairy is currently owned by Peruvian conglomerate Grupo Gloria.)

De la caña de azúcar al ganado

“Qué bueno que mi papá me habló a través de los años y se me quedó bastante. Me repetía los cuentos de su tío Jorge”, dice con nostalgia Héctor Nevares, descendiente de los hacendados de Media Luna. Desde una oficina sencilla, como detenida en los años 70, y ubicada en las cuerdas de la familia en Dorado, Héctor recuerda que en esos terrenos y los de Media Luna, un poco más abajo, originalmente se sembraba caña. Ese era el negocio familiar. De su cepa, tener ganado era un hobby. Pero, ya a mediados de la década de 1960 empezó a mermar la siembra de caña. Hubo uno que otro año bueno. La última buena cosecha fue en el 1978, pero Héctor era muy pequeño para recordarlo. “En los años 60 mi bisabuelo, Oscar Nevares –hay mucho Oscar en mi familia– empezó a traer vacas y toros, porque antes no había inseminación artificial. Quiso aprovechar el terreno y cambiar de sembrar caña a tener ganado. Mi abuelo no quería ser vaquero, quería ser ingeniero, pero le tocó encargarse del negocio porque mi bisabuelo murió joven, en el 1948, de tuberculosis”, explica Héctor. “Luego mi papá se hizo cargo de la finca, desde 1969 que tendría 23 o 24 años. A él esto sí le encantó y estuvo trabajando sin parar hasta el año pasado. Se cansó y me dejó a mí”, añade.

Las historias del tío Jorge

“De teenager mi papá me empezó a hacer los cuentos que su tío Jorge Nevares López le narraba. El tío Jorge era el hermano menor de mi bisabuelo Oscar Neva-

As far as it is known, Hacienda Media Luna was established by Cipriano Nevares in the late 1700s or early 1800s. Today, the manor house belongs to Oscar Nevares, while his son, Héctor Nevares, runs the business. The dairy farm has land in Media Luna, Toa Baja and in the Guácaros sector of Dorado.

From sugarcane to cattle

“I’m glad my dad used to talk to me about this all the time; I can remember quite a bit. He used to repeat the stories of his uncle Jorge,” nostalgically recalls Héctor Nevares, scion of Media Luna’s lineage of owners. Sitting in an office - bare and frozen in the 70s - on the family’s land in Dorado, Héctor recalls that these fields and those in Media Luna, further down the road, were originally used to grow sugarcane. That used to be the family business. On his side of the family, owning cattle was a hobby. However, while sugarcane production started to decline in the mid-1960s, there were a few good years in between. They saw their last bountiful harvest in 1978, but Héctor was too young to remember this. “In the 60s, my great-grandfather, Oscar Nevares —the name runs in the family— started to bring cows and bulls, because artificial insemination wasn’t a thing yet. He wanted to make use of the land, so he pivoted from sugarcane to cattle. My grandfather wanted to be an engineer, not a cattle farmer, but he had to take over the business because his father died of tuberculosis very young (in 1948) of tuberculosis,” Héctor explains. “Then, my dad took over the farm in 1969, when he was 23 or GUAYNABO BOUND

DESCUBRE res. Porque está José Nevares Landrón, mi tatarabuelo. Mi tatarabuelo tuvo como 6 hijos y el más pequeño, tío Jorge, es el que le hizo todos los cuentos a mi papá. Ellos se iban a almorzar a una casa que tenía en Breñas (Vega Alta). Me llamaban para ir a comer allí. A mí me encantaba porque sabía que, además de ir a comer un buen arroz con habichuelas, iba a escuchar todos los cuentos”, recuerda Héctor. “Mi bisabuelo nació en el 1888 y era el tercero en línea. El primero es de la cepa de Suiza Dairy, Rafael Nevares, quien era ingeniero. Hizo la carretera #3. Ese era el mayor. El segundo se llamaba Mario, quien murió ahogado a los 33 años. Se fue a cruzar el río con el caballo. Antes metían los pies en canastas. Fue a cruzar el río, aunque le advirtieron que estaba un poco alto. Comoquiera lo cruzó, el caballo se asustó, se volteó, lo arrastró y Mario se ahogó. Era quien corría los negocios de la caña. Al morir Mario, mi bisabuelo Oscar Nevares cogió la batuta. Se quedó trabajando en las vaquerías. Compró esta que está en Dorado como en el 1920. Esto antes era de un español que les alquilaba los terrenos”, comenta Héctor. En esa finca alquilada había una piscina que usaba la familia. Cuentan que hasta el primer gobernador electo por los puertorriqueños, Luis Muñoz Marín, llegaba allí para refrescarse, pues era amigo de la familia. Los terrenos que compró su bisabuelo en Dorado comprendían 500 cuerdas y se extendía desde Río Nuevo Norte hasta Río Nuevo Sur. Había también una casa rústica, que ya no existe. Le decían “la casa de la niña del Plata”. En los tiempos de gloria, la familia Nevares llegó a tener hasta 25,000 cuerdas de terreno repartidas entre los 6 hijos de su tatarabuelo. Por ejemplo, el “tío Moncho” tenía terrenos en lo que hoy es el estadio Hiram Bithorn en San Juan. Además, tenían terrenos en lo que es hoy Buchanan. “Mi tatarabuelo se casó con la única hija de Pedro López Canino, quien era dueño de casi todo Dorado. Al casarse con ella, multiplicó los terrenos. En esa época era una familia grande, y entre los 6 hijos se fueros esfumando los terrenos. Ahora nos quedan como 1,000 cuerdas entre Dorado, Toa Baja y Sabana Hoyos (Arecibo)”. Lo curioso de todo es que cuando repartieron los terrenos, el tío Jorge se quedó sin terreno. “No sé si hay otra razón. El cuento es que mi bisabuelo lo quería como un hijo y se llevaban como 12 años. Le dijo: ‘Jorge, dame como $3,000 y te hago socio, mitad y mitad. Así fue. Cinco años después mi bisabuelo murió de tuberculosis. Tío Jorge y mi abuelo no se llevaban bien. Así que se dividieron los terrenos. Todo salió como querían. Mi abuelo cogió esta finca en Dorado, porque el río estaba accesible para las vacas. Y tío Jorge quería estar en Media Luna, en la casona en donde se crio”, detalla Héctor. 34

DESCUBRE 24 years old. Unlike his father, he loved his work, and he remained active until last year. He got tired and left me in charge,” he adds.

The stories of Uncle Jorge

“When I was a teenager, my dad started telling me the stories his uncle Jorge Nevares used to tell him. Uncle Jorge was the younger brother of my great-grandfather Oscar Nevares. Their father was José Nevares Landrón, my great-great-grandfather. He had 6 kids, and the youngest, Uncle Jorge, was the one who told my dad all the stories. They used to have lunch at a house he had in Breñas (Vega Alta), and they would call me over to join them. I loved it because I knew that, aside from a good plate of rice and beans, I would also get all the stories,” Héctor remembers. “My great-grandfather was born third in line, in 1888. The firstborn, Rafael Nevares, was an engineer who went on to work on the Suiza Dairy side. He made road PR-3. He was the oldest. Second in line was Mario. He drowned at 33 years old, while attempting to cross the river on horseback. You used to have to stand in a crate. He crossed the river even though they told him the water was too high. He went ahead anyway. The horse got spooked, turned, and ran, dragging Mario along and drowning him. He used to run the sugarcane business. After Mario passed away, my great-grandfather, Oscar Nevares, took the helm and stayed in the dairy farms. He bought this one in Dorado back in 1920. It used to belong to a Spaniard who leased the land to the family,” Héctor remarks. The rented property featured a swimming pool that was enjoyed by the family. Rumor has it that even Luis Muñoz Marín, the first governor elected by Puerto Ricans, was a family friend and visited often to cool down and relax. The property bought by Héctor’s great-grandfather in Dorado spanned 500 cuerdas (≈ 196.5 ha), extending from the north end to the south end of Río Nuevo. It also featured a rustic house that no longer stands. It used to be known as “la casa de la niña del Plata” (“the house of the girl of El Plata”). During their glory days, the Nevares family owned up to 25,000 cuerdas (≈ 9,825 ha) distributed between the 6 children of his great-great-grandfather. For example, his uncle Moncho used to own land in what is now the Hiram Bithorn Stadium, in San Juan, as well as in the area currently occupied by Ft. Buchanan. “My great-great-grandfather married the only daughter of Pedro López Canino, who owned almost all of Dorado. By marrying her, he multiplied his land holdings. Back then, the family was huge, so the plots of land slowly dwindled away among the 6 siblings. Now all we have is about 1,000 cuerdas (≈ 393 ha) spread out between Dorado, Toa Baja, and Sabana Hoyos (Arecibo).” GUAYNABO BOUND

DESCUBRE It is worth noting that in the distribution of lands, his uncle Jorge was left with nothing. “I don’t know if there were ulterior motives. The story is that my great-grandfather loved him like a son, although they were only 12 years apart. He asked Jorge to give him $3,000, and he would make him an equal partner. And so it was. Five years later, my great-grandfather died of tuberculosis. Uncle Jorge and my grandfather didn’t get along, so they split the properties. It all went according to plan. My grandfather took over this farm in Dorado because the cows had access to the river. Meanwhile, Uncle Jorge wanted to stay in the manor house in Media Luna, where he grew up,” Héctor recounts.

Héctor jamás se vio trabajando en la vaquería. Al igual que la generación desde su abuelo, se crio en Guaynabo, pero visitaba la casona. En las paredes de su modesta oficina pueden verse retratos de sus años como tenista en la Universidad de Georgia, en donde obtuvo una beca por ese deporte. “El coach era Manuel Díaz, campeón de Puerto Rico, y fui para allá porque el equipo de esa universidad era de los mejores 5 de Estados Unidos. Además, conocía al coach porque jugaba con mi abuela. Mi abuela le enseñó a jugar tenis”, explica el ganadero. Aunque su sueño era ser tenista, sus rodillas no lo dejaron continuar al nivel competitivo que anhelaba. Entonces regresó a Puerto Rico. Mientras eso pasaba, su papá, jugando tenis se lastimó. Entonces Héctor le propuso dirigir la vaquería. “Le dije: ‘No sé mucho, pero puedo ser tus ojos y decirte qué está pasando’. Vi tantas cosas que se podían mejorar. Me metí en internet, en AltaVista porque en los 90 no había Google. Aprendí lo más que pude del negocio. Cambié la dieta del ganado. (Hace el alimento él mismo). En fin, sangre nueva. Le dije: ‘Hay que dejar atrás los tarjeteros, usar la tecnología. Cada cierto tiempo hay que hacer un refresh porque si no te vas quedando atrás”, detalla Héctor sobre sus inicios en la industria. Ahora Héctor se siente en los zapatos de su papá hace 20 o 30 años. “Tengo que hacer cambios porque al final yo sé que quedarán pocos ganaderos. La industria lechera tiene muchos retos, que son también mundiales. Tiene que ver con los granos, el alimento está carísimo, las guerras y el calentamiento global”, detalla.

Sueños en la casona

Héctor recuerda tener como 5 años y aventurarse por sus recovecos de la casona en Media Luna. Le encantaría darle un nuevo aire y restaurarla como lo hizo su tío Jorge en los años 60. Preservarla para futuras generaciones y así contar más historias. 36

Héctor never imagined he’d end up working at the dairy farm. Just like his grandfather’s and father’s generations, he grew up in Guaynabo but would visit the manor. Portraits of his years as a tennis player at the University of Georgia, where he earned an athletic scholarship, hang from the walls of his modest office. “The coach was Manuel Díaz, a champion from Puerto Rico. I went there because the university team was among the top 5 in the United States. Besides, I knew the coach because he used to play with my grandmother. She was the one who taught him how to play tennis,” he explains. His dream was to be a tennis player, but his knees kept him from reaching the competitive level he aspired to. So, he returned to Puerto Rico. At the same time, his father suffered an injury while playing tennis. Héctor then proposed to take over the dairy business. “I told him, ‘I don’t know a lot, but I can be your eyes and tell you what’s going on.’ And I saw so many areas for improvement. I went online, through AltaVista because there was no Google in the 90s. I learned as much as I could about the business. I changed the livestock feed. [He prepares the feed himself.] In short, new blood. I also told him we had to leave filing cabinets behind and start using technology. You have to sort of refresh yourself every once in a while. Otherwise, you fall behind,” Héctor says of his early days in the industry. Héctor can now understand how his father felt 20 or 30 years ago. “I need to make changes, because I know few farmers will be left standing in the end. The dairy industry is full of challenges, including global concerns, like issues with the grains, the high cost of feed, wars, and global warming,” he notes.

Dreaming in the manor

Héctor remembers exploring all the nooks and crannies of the manor house in Media Luna when he was 5 years old. He would love to breathe new life into it and restore it as his uncle Jorge did in the 1960s— preserve it for generations to come, so more stories can be told.

Comprehensive Sex Ed: What It Means and How to Teach It at Home Comprehensive sex education provides students with accurate and appropriate information about sexual and reproductive health. This includes discussions about the different types of families, what healthy relationships are like, how to practice respect and consent, understanding bodily autonomy, and ways to protect oneself from potential sexual abuse. And it is the responsibility of parents and caregivers to teach these skills. When is the best time to do this? These conversations can start early. The following is a guide by age: From infancy to 2 years old 4Hug them, talk to them in a warm, caring, and re-

From 5 to 8 years old 4At this age, children attach great importance to gender roles and the social rules of what it means to be a boy or a girl. Gender identity becomes very clear at this stage as well, even for transgender children. Help them to not to be ashamed of their interests or the way they dress and act, even if it differs from what others do. 4Let boys cry when they are sad, and let girls express their anger. 4This is the age when they begin to develop important friendships and learn how to express their feelings. Help them learn how to be a good friend —this will help them cultivate the ability to have healthy interpersonal relationships in the future. 4Emphasize their health, strengths, and consideration for others, rather than focusing on their appearance or comparing themselves to others. 4They may feel self-conscious about asking questions or may seem uninterested in the subject of sexuality and interpersonal relationships. They need to know about sexually transmitted infections, contraceptive methods, and what leads to pregnancy. From 13 to 18 years old 4Teens face a number of decisions about sexual relations. Ask them if they are dating, whether they are considering having sex, if their friends are already having sex, and what they think about the matter. 4Be sensitive to the feelings they express and offer them the best advice you can. Teach them how to say “no” and how to protect themselves from unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections by using contraceptives and condoms. 4Talk to them about mutual consent and healthy interpersonal relationships. 4Tell them that their sexual urges are normal. Do not assume that they will automatically like people of the opposite sex. If they do not, they need to know that you support and love them no matter who they feel attracted to. 4Explain to them that pornography does not represent what sexual intercourse or most bodies are actually like and teach them about the effects of being exposed to this type of media. 4Make sure they are aware of the implications of sharing sexual content and that they know no one has the right to demand photos of their bodies. It may be awkward, but it is important to talk about this topic. It gets easier with practice. Take advantage of small learning opportunities, such as a friend’s pregnancy, people’s conversations, or TV shows. If you don’t know the answer, admit it. ay quien podría decir que su destino ya estaba escrito –y escrito con barniz de uñas en todos los colores del arcoíris–. Tal vez fue un poco así. Pero, sobre cómo transformar su negocio, vivir con amor del bueno y sumarle a la vida de otros, eso lo escribe cada día la misma Bettina Mercado. Bettina. Sus padres la nombraron justo como el color de esmalte más vendido en su modesto negocio familiar de importación de productos de belleza. Su mamá le decía “el color de la bendición” por las ganancias que aquel tono crema perlado les dejaba. Y así, con ese nombre y tal vez sin proponérselo, Julia y Víctor sellaron el futuro de su hija menor.

Bettina: The Color of Blessings Some say their fate has already been written –but not many can say that it was written with nail polish in all the colors of the rainbow. And while it may have been so, Bettina Mercado wrote all the rest; she transformed her business as she put love first and added more to the lives of other people. Bettina. Her parents named her after the best-selling nail polish shade from their humble beauty import business. Her mother used to call it “the blessed shade.” That’s because of the profits from selling the creamy pearl shade. And it was with that name, without giving it a second thought, that Julia and Victor sealed the future of their youngest daughter.

Pero, con los años, ella planeó para sí un futuro muy distinto. Su mamá patrocinó que sus hijos estudiaran lo que quisieran y Bettina optó por educarse en actuación, en la Universidad de Nueva York. Ya graduada, le fue muy bien en la carrera en aquella ciudad. “Hasta que en el 2001 llegó la nefasta llamada”, dice reviviendo aquel momento en que se la pusieron difícil: o se regresaba a la isla a tomar las riendas del negocio, o la empresa por la que tanto lucharon sus padres se vendería. La Bettina que habla ya tiene 54 años y una figura y una energía que le perpetúan un halo juvenil. No puede uno menos que detenerse y observarla con su atuendo de punta en blanco y manicura perfecta. Y tiene la capacidad de fascinar a uno con su relato. “Recuerdo que le dije a mi mamá: ‘voy a ir, pero

Her career in the city went very well after graduation. “Until that dreaded phone call in 2001,” she says, recalling the moment when she had to make a difficult decision: either return to the island and take over the business, or sell the company her parents had fought for so long. The Bettina who retells this story is already 54 years old, but full of youthful energy and presence. One needs a minute to take in her impeccable attire and perfect manicure, while noting her ability to captivate anyone who listens. “I remember telling my mother, ‘I’m going, but if I don’t do well, you’ll have to let me go back. si no doy pie con bola, me vas a dejar regresar’. Porque yo sabía de libretos, pero, de negocios, nada”, cuenta quien este mismo año celebra el 60 aniversario de la empresa. Y con esa cortapisa, un 1ro de abril atravesó la puerta de la empresa y se quedó allí. Fácil no se le hizo, pero si había dejado atrás su atesorada carrera actoral, no iba a ser en vano. La mujer, petite de cuerpo mas no de carácter, llegó con una revolución y un nuevo modelo de negocio. “Toda la vida me he tenido que defender porque soy pequeña”, sentencia para relatar su andar en un mundo que desconocía y cómo comenzó a tocar puertas para, a través del benchmarking, aprender. “Ese tiempo fue bien rocoso, pero yo me proyectaba. Me dije: ‘voy a crecer’”, acota. A partir de entonces, todo fue encajando para esta empresaria tan autodidacta como atrevida, que en el 2013 transformó a Bettina en una firma manufacturera local con sede en Dorado. “Yo soy la que nunca se rinde”, se autodescribe la que junto a su equipo logró que en tiempos de recesión económica sus ventas aumentaran en 44

business,” says the person celebrating the company’s 60th anniversary this year. And with that caveat, she entered the company on April 1 of that year and has remained there ever since. It wasn’t easy, but she didn’t want the sacrifice of leaving her career behind to be in vain. With a revolutionary attitude and a new business model, this petite but fierce woman arrived. “I’ve had to stand up for myself my entire life because I’m small,” she says, describing how she found her way in an unfamiliar world and began knocking on doors to learn through benchmarking. “It was a hard time in my life, but I was manifesting what I wanted. I said to myself, ‘I’m going to grow,’” she noted. From then on, everything fell into place for this daring and self-taught entrepreneur. By 2013, she had transformed Bettina into a local manufacturing company based in Dorado. As someone who, along with her team, was able to increase sales by 30% in the midst of the recession, she describes herself as a “never give up” type of person. She was responsible for an entire crossover, as she took her brand to pharmacies and Walmart stores

un 30%. Y la que hizo todo un crossover llevando su marca a farmacias y a tiendas Walmart en Estados Unidos. Y la que durante la pandemia hizo un concurso que honró a emprendedoras latinas que le ganó sobre 100 publicaciones en medios americanos y locales. Pero, si interesante es su historia profesional, su vida de mujer lo es también. Bettina ha creado la fórmula para compaginarlo todo bien. “Hay cosas que tienes impresas en ti, pero que no salen hasta cierto momento en la vida”, confiesa refiriéndose a enseñanzas que recibió de su madre. La primera fue “que me hiciera tan económicamente independiente como fuera posible para que el hombre que se juntara conmigo no se quedara simplemente por no dejarme desprovista”, reza citando a su progenitora. Y entonces, el hombre llegó y le trajo a su vida otros colores; el artista José Vega. Pero Bettina le puso una condición: que Dios tenía que ser el centro de su relación. Así le dio el sí a la boda y luego a tener a su hijo, Víctor José. “Temprano entendí que ser exitosa en la empresa, si mi vida personal estaba vacía, no era un buen

Thus, she agreed to marry him and later welcomed their son, Víctor José. “I learned early in life that being successful in my business and having an unfulfilled personal life was not necessarily doing good business. negocio. De rodillas dije: ‘Señor, si tú te encargas de mi empresa, yo me encargo de que tú seas el centro de mi matrimonio’”, expone, asegurando que así mismo ha sido. Su agenda siempre está llena, y con las mismas 24 horas al día que tiene todo el mundo, Bettina Mercado se las arregla bien para liderar una empresa, darle calor a una casa y, desde el 2017, fungir como conferenciante, algo que le fascina. “Llevo conferencias a universidades, iglesias, retiros, eventos de emprendedores… siento que añado valor a mi vida. Mañana no sabemos lo que va a traer y, si yo puedo tener en la parte de atrás de mi cerebro la certeza de que pude hacer algo por alguien, será grandioso”, asiente con emoción. Si le preguntan, dice que tiene aún más planes, y que si los verbaliza los hará realidad. Como el libro que tiene entre ceja y ceja y la idea de crear otra marca en los próximos 5 años. Y así, Bettina Mercado, con su cuerpo pequeño y su espíritu grande, se asegura de vivir como le gusta: intensamente. 46

I prayed, ‘Lord, if you lead my business, I will ensure that you are the center of my marriage,’” she says, confirming that that’s exactly how it has always been. Her schedule is always full, and with the same 24 hours that everyone else is given, Bettina Mercado manages to stay on top of her business, keep a home full of warmth, and, since 2017, participate as a conference speaker, something she finds incredibly fulfilling. “I speak at universities, churches, retreats, entrepreneurship events... it adds value to my life. We never know what tomorrow will bring, and if I am able to know, in the back of my mind, that I made a difference in someone’s life, that would be great,” she nods with emotion. If you ask her, she admits that she has even more plans and that if she puts them into words, they will become a reality. The book she plans to write and establishing another brand in the next 5 years are a few of these plans. And so, Bettina Mercado, with her petite frame and larger-than-life spirit, lives the way she likes –with intensity.

Heavy makeup is a thing of the past. Now, the focus is on medium coverage. Ingrid and Eladia both prefer liquid foundations. b Ingrid recommends the L’Oréal primer. “I like to mix

the primer with foundation and apply it with a blending brush.” b “Choose a long-wear or full coverage foundation. I prefer to wear it matte on my T-zone and apply highlighter on the sides,” says Ingrid. “Blend the foundation thoroughly to give the skin a natural and healthy appearance. I use MAC and Estée Lauder foundations,” says Eladia.

It’s one of my top favorites.” b Ingrid likes to set the face using “a brush and pressed powder that matches your skin tone. If you are always on the go, use a powder foundation or a 2-in-1 foundation and powder product with a sponge.” Eladia says that she prefers to “set the face makeup with the Skindinavia finishing spray.”

El clásico negro es un must, pero también se verán los colores vibrantes y los metálicos como magenta, rosa, azul, dorado, bronce y plata”, explica Eladia y añade que “en el water line, recomiendo un delineador extremadamente negro de larga duración o water resistant”. b En cuanto a pestañas postizas, ambas coinciden en que se están usando para resaltar las esquinas del lado del ojo y otorgar profundidad a la mirada. “La pega debe ser de larga duración. Mi favorita es la marca Duo, que es blanca y se torna transparente”, comenta Ingrid. b Para Ingrid el rímel azul “imparte un look sexy y seductor, resaltando el color vino”. Eladia aconseja seleccionar uno waterproof o water resistant.

LABIOS

Si de labiales se trata, los mate y de larga duración son los elegidos. Ingrid y Eladia son team gloss con mucho brillo, algo que no debe faltar para darle el toque final. b Ingrid se inclina por los tonos “malva, rojo y vino”,

mientras que Eladia por lo “tonos magenta, café y rojo cardinal para un look sexy y sofisticado. Mis preferidos son los de MAC”.

b “I go for burgundy shades for lining the upper lid, and then blend it out. This color enhances dark and light colored eyes. I also use blue or dark green,” says Ingrid. “We will also see bold eyeliner looks, whether it’s graphic liners, straight lines, or the cat eye. The classic black eyeliner is a must, but vibrant and metallic colors like magenta, pink, blue, gold, bronze, and silver will also be popular,” explains Eladia. “For the waterline, I recommend a long-lasting or waterproof jet-black eyeliner,” she adds. b As for false lashes, both agree that they accentuate the outer corners of the eye and add depth to the overall look. “The adhesive should be long-lasting. My favorite is the Duo brand. It’s white, but dries clear,” says Ingrid. b For Ingrid, blue mascara “creates a sexy and seductive look, and makes burgundy stand out.” Eladia recommends choosing a mascara that’s waterproof or water-resistant.

LIPS

When it comes to lips, matte and long-lasting are the lipsticks of choice. Ingrid and Eladia are team high-shine lip gloss; the perfect final touch. b Ingrid leans towards “mauve, red, and burgundy shades,” while Eladia favors “magenta, brown, and cardinal red shades for a sexy and sophisticated look. My favorite ones are from MAC.”

Toma nota de estas recomendaciones. “El frizz es la reacción del cabello a la humedad del día, lo que provoca la porosidad y apertura de la cutícula para absorber la humedad del ambiente”, expone la estilista Laura Om, propietaria del salón de belleza OM Studio, en Santurce. Por su parte, la educadora de belleza, Valeria Cruz Goytía, explica que el resultado de la humedad es: “cabellos elevados, usualmente partidos y deshidratados, que no se acomodan a la caída natural y sobresalen del cuero cabelludo”.

Say Goodbye to Frizzy Hair The notorious frizz, or frizzy hair, happens when the weather changes, especially when it gets humid. So, what can you do to control it? We’ll give you a few tips, so take notes. “Frizz is your hair’s reaction to humidity, caused by its level of porosity and by the cuticle opening up to absorb moisture from the environment, explains Laura Om, stylist and owner of OM Studio, a hair salon in Santurce. Meanwhile, beauty educator Valeria Cruz Goytía explains that humidity leads to “flyaway hair strands, usually split and dehydrated, that do not follow the natural pattern and texture and tend to stick up.” GUAYNABO BOUND

BELLEZA La cruda realidad es que el frizz no perdona; todo tipo de cabello puede encresparse, “tanto el cabello fino como el grueso, ya sea liso o rizo. El cabello rizo tiene volumen y, naturalmente, se eleva más allá del cuero cabelludo. En el cabello liso se nota más el cabello partido y la falta de hidratación”, afirma Cruz Goytía, propietaria de Optimum Salón, en Caguas. ¿El frizz tiene solución? ¡Desde luego que sí! Y no es tan difícil como piensas. Ambas expertas coinciden en que cosas tan simples como cambiar la temperatura del agua con la que te lavas el cabello, el material de la toalla y la funda de la almohada, y hasta el cepillo que utilizas, producirán cambios inmediatos en la textura irregular del pelo.

Ya tienes la receta. Ahora, a darlo todo con el cabello set.

Estas orejitas pueden ser parte de la solución: 5 Lava el cabello con agua templada o fría, ya que el agua caliente lo debilita. 5 Elige una toalla de microfibra. Este material tiene menos textura, es sutil y produce menos fricción en el cabello. 5 Selecciona fundas de almohada que sean de seda. 5 Adquiere un cepillo flexible, preferiblemente de cerdas naturales. El cepillo iónico produce menos estática. Hay más… Laura Om, experta en cabello rizo, sostiene que, si vas a utilizar el secador de mano o blower debes evitar el calor extremo y mantenerlo a una temperatura baja, distanciado del cabello y en continuo movimiento. Valeria añade que existen blowers que se salen de lo tradicional ya que están hechos de un material de mineral volcánico que sellan la hebra para conservar la hidratación del cabello. ¡Toma control! Para Laura un ingrediente efectivo que repele la humedad en el cabello es el silicón soluble en agua. Mientras que Valeria menciona los productos ricos en ceramidas, un nutriente necesario para fortalecer el cabello, evitar roturas y ayudar a que este se acomode a su caída natural. A la hora de comprar productos: 5 Opta por champús, acondicionadores y mascarillas que no contengan alcohol y brinden hidratación. 5 Busca ingredientes naturales como el aceite de semilla de girasol, almendra, argán o macadamia. 52

The hard truth is that frizz doesn’t discriminate: all hair types can become frizzy, “no matter if it’s fine or thick, straight or curly. Curls add volume and naturally lift the hair away from the scalp, but if you have straight hair, split ends and dryness will be more noticeable,” explains Cruz Goytía, who is owner of Optimum Salon, in Caguas. Is there a solution to frizz? Of course! And it’s not as difficult as you might think. Both experts agree that simple steps, such as changing the water temperature to wash your hair, the type of fabric your towel and pillowcase are made of, and even your hair brush, can immediately improve irregular hair texture. These tips can be part of the solution: 5 Wash your hair with lukewarm or cold water; hot water will weaken it. 5 Choose a microfiber towel. This fabric is soft and less textured, leading to less friction on the hair. 5 Select pillowcases made of silk. 5 Get a flexible brush, preferably with natural bristles. Another option is an ionic brush, designed to help reduce hair static.

Now that you’ve got the formula, go all out with your hair on point.

And there’s more... According to curly hair expert Laura Om, when using a hair dryer or blower, you should avoid extreme heat and keep it on a low setting, a safe distance away from the hair, and in continuous movement. Valeria also mentions the existence of special hair dryers made of volcanic mineral, which seals the hair strands to preserve moisture. Take control! Laura swears by water-soluble silicone as an effective ingredient to repel moisture in the hair. Meanwhile, Valeria mentions products rich in ceramides, an essential nutrient to strengthen hair, prevent breakage, and help retain its natural pattern and texture. She also recommends hair treatments that help strengthen and hydrate the strand from the inside out. When buying products: 5 Choose moisturizing shampoos, conditioners, and masks that are alcohol-free. 5 Look for natural ingredients such as sunflower seed, almond, argan, or macadamia oil.

Jennifer Dynys, del conocido blog The Every Day Farmhouse, describe al gesto de alojar a familiares o amigos a quedarse en tu casa como una hermosa manera de combatir la soledad –y, sí, también de abrazar la vulnerabilidad, permitiendo que otros vean exactamente cómo vives–. All the better if it’s natural, because it brings an added touch of fragrance, which is important.” If wreaths aren’t your thing, try plants. If they have flowers, even better. Textures and textiles hold secrets It’s amazing what a few of these elements can accomplish in a space. The consultant suggests velvet and other similar materials to help create a more formal look, and shiny fabrics to convey a celebratory mood. And you can introduce some extra charm with throws, cushions, or a new area rug.

Work your magic with lighting Surely, you will always remember that one hotel room that was set aglow during the nighttime with strategically placed table lamps. You can do the same at home. You can also use dimmer switches and set up candles in the bedrooms.

os vinos espumosos representan celebración y distinción, además de ser un clásico en las celebraciones y cenas de las épocas festivas. Esa copa fría y burbujeante en el paladar es la favorita de muchos. Pero son tantas las variedades de vinos espumosos que podemos sentirnos abrumados y con dudas sobre cuál escoger. Gina Micheli, sommelier y experta en cellar management, explica que las opciones de vinos espumosos incluyen: cava, champán, pét-nat y prosecco. También crémant, de alrededor de Francia, y espumosos de distintos países del mundo. ¿Aún con dudas? Te entendemos, por eso ella abunda para aclarar que “los vinos espumosos son todos aquellos que contienen burbujas conseguidas a través de una fermentación elaborada en depósitos de vino sellados, ya sea en botellas o tanques”. Las diferencias claves que distinguen a las burbujeantes son los métodos para lograr sus burbujas. Gina nos lo explica en detalle:

Método tradicional

“Luego de una primera fermentación, el vino de menos de 11 grados de alcohol entra a una botella a la cual se le añade una mezcla de azúcares y levaduras naturales a un vino de reserva y se tapa. Esa mezcla comienza una nueva fermentación, como producto de esta fermentación se crea CO2 y, atrapado por la tapa, se encapsula en las burbujas. Las botellas son abiertas posteriormente para eliminar los sedimentos”. Este método es utilizado en champán –solamente los elaborados en la zona francesa Champagne– también en los crémants franceses, en la cava de España, en el sekt alemán y en el corpinnat, del área de Penedès en Cataluña.

Método charmat

Técnica en la cual el vino es fermentado las dos veces en depósitos de acero inoxidable y luego se embotella. Las burbujas más conocidas de esta categoría son el prosecco, procedente de Italia.

Sparkling wines represent times of celebration and distinction, in addition to being the classic choices for parties and dinners during the holiday season. That cold and bubbly glass on the palate is a favorite for many. With many types of sparkling wines, choosing one can be an overwhelming and time-consuming task. Gina Micheli, a sommelier and cellar management expert, explains that the options for sparkling wine include Cava, champagne, pét-nat, and Prosecco. There are also Crémant wines from various regions in France and sparkling wines from different countries across the world. Still unsure? We understand. That is why she goes on to clarify that “sparkling wines are all those that contain bubbles obtained through a fermentation process carried out in closed wine containers, whether in bottles or tanks.” The methods used to create the bubbles are the key differences that distinguish sparkling wines. Gina explains it to us in detail:

Traditional method

“After the primary fermentation, the wine with less than 11% alcohol is bottled, to which a mixture of sugar and natural yeasts is added to a reserve wine and sealed. This mixture initiates a new fermentation. As a result, CO2 is generated, trapped by the lid, and bubbles are formed. The bottles are subsequently opened to remove the sediment.” This method is used for champagne, but only for those wines produced in the Champagne region of France. It is also used for the French Crémants, Spanish Cava, German Sekt, and the Corpinnat from the Penedès region of Catalonia.

Charmat method

This technique involves fermenting the wine twice in stainless steel tanks before bottling it. The most well-known bubbly in this category is Prosecco, which hails from Italy. GUAYNABO BOUND

Also known as pét-nat, this is a way of achieving bubbles with as few steps as possible. “The wine is bottled during alcoholic fermentation and inside the bottle, the yeast consumes the sugars, and the trapped carbon dioxide (CO2) is converted into bubbles.”

Let’s talk about grapes.

Las uvas también son muy variadas. Por ejemplo, el prosecco se elabora con una uva llamada glera y el champán con una combinación de chardonnay, pinot noir y pinot meunier. Conversely, Cava is made from local grape varieties like Xarel-lo, Macabeo, and Parellada. Argentina, Australia, the United States, Chile, and South Africa also produce their own sparkling wines, each with its own bottling and fermentation methods. For those seeking something exotic, Canada offers the world’s rarest sparkling wine: Icewine, made from frozen grapes with a high sugar concentration.

El mezcal, bebida destilada de la planta del agave, ha despuntado en los últimos años a pesar de ser una bebida centenaria. El misticismo que envuelve su proceso de destilación y fermentación, así como una variedad de creatividad y originalidad de cocteles con base de mezcal, está en la mirilla de los degustadores curiosos y atrevidos. Esta bebida mexicana ha tomado protagonismo en las barras y restaurantes del país. Tanto que en Lote 23, en Santurce, se ha abierto un espacio denominado El Club Mezcal. Allí llegamos un viernes en hora del arrebol para sorprender al paladar con algunas de las casi 40 opciones de mezcal que ofrecen. El Club Mezcal es una barra atípica que le permite a los comensales la oportunidad de probar algo nuevo en cada visita. Es un espacio que invita a la educación como medio para un mayor consumo, afirma Paul González, su cofundador. Entre las ofertas del lugar apreciamos un Oaxaca Mule. También, deleita-

Mezcal in the Spotlight The latest novelty in the mixology industry stands out for its history, place of origin, and immeasurable variety. Mezcal, a beverage distilled from the agave plant, has gained prominence in recent years despite being a centuries-old drink. The mystery shrouding its distillation and fermentation process, as well as the variety of creative and original mezcal-based cocktails out there, has caught the attention of the curious and the adventurous. This Mexican spirit has taken center stage in bars and restaurants nationwide. And Lote 23, in Santurce, is no exception, with a new space called El Club Mezcal just opened. We arrived at the club on a Friday evening, as the last sunbeams tinged the clouds red, ready to delight in some of the almost 40 drinks they prepare with mezcal. El Club Mezcal is an unconventional bar that allows diners to try something new in each visit. The space’s co-founder, Paul González, explains that it is meant to promote learning as a vehicle to increased GUAYNABO BOUND

MESA Y BARRA mos un shot o vasito del mezcal Espadín de Vago, una marca liderada por una familia que elabora el espíritu a pequeña escala. Aprendimos que las ligeras notas de este mezcal –y de los mexcales en general– que incluyen anís, plátano verde, pino y caramelo, se deben tomar sorbo a sorbo, o como dice Paul: “a besos”. La magia de este espíritu destilado procede del romanticismo del proceso, acompañado de la complejidad de sus aromas, sabores, texturas. El sabor ahumado del mezcal es su marca definitiva, pero también se distingue por su sabor terruño y vegetal. Sin embargo, no todos los mezcales son ahumados. “El tono ahumado no proviene del proceso de elaboración del mezcal –que se hace quemando las cabezas o piñas del agave debajo de la tierra–. Más bien por los componentes químicos del agave junto con las recetas particulares de un maestro mezcalero. La bebida está vinculada no solo a un proceso ceremonial antiguo, sino también con aspectos medicinales. Por esta razón es tan popular en México. Paul nos recuerda que “el tequila es un tipo de mezcal, pero no todos los mezcales son tequila. El mezcal se produce a partir de una variedad de agaves. El agave más común que se usa para hacer mezcal es Espadín y se produce en su mayoría en Oaxaca”. Para Marcos Rivera, head bartender del Restaurante Ariel en Miramar, el gusto por el mezcal se adquiere poco a poco. “La mayoría de los que tratan el mezcal son asiduos al tequila, pero al igual que el whiskey, el mezcal es tan variado que lo puedes tomar solo o combinarlo con tus sabores favoritos”. Marcos asegura que para él lo idóneo del mezcal en la coctelería es que “da un juego de aromas complejas. Además de que me gusta siempre crear una experiencia tanto para nuevos paladares como para lo que ya gustan de las notas ahumadas”. Un twist en la Margarita clásica o la creación del Oaxaca Old Fashion dieron pie al inicio de la incursión del mezcal en los cócteles. Marcos explica que ahora este licor se usa en cocteles con parcha, toronja, jengibre y hasta pepinillos. Es suficientemente neutral como para intercambiarlo en cualquier trago que contenga tequila o vodka y a su vez el smokiness le brinda un twist particular a cualquier trago que originalmente lleva whiskey o ginebra, como el Negroni y el Martini. La próxima vez que pidas un coctel, atrévete a probar uno con mezcal. Puede que encuentres tu nuevo espíritu de preferencia. O, mejor aún, experimenta su gusto en casa con esta receta del barman Marcos Rivera. 70

Ingredientes: 1.5 oz de mezcal 1.5 oz de tepache .25 oz de jarabe de chiles .25 oz de zumo de limón

Procedimiento: Coloca todos los ingredientes dentro de un shaker con hielo y agita vigorosamente. Vierte la mezcla en un vaso de coctel y disfruta.

Ingredients: 1.5 oz of mezcal 1.5 oz of tepache 0.25 oz of chili syrup 0.25 oz of lemon juice

Preparation: Pour all the ingredients into a shaker with ice and shake vigorously. Pour the mixture into a cocktail glass, and enjoy!

MESA Y BARRA consumption. From among the establishment’s offerings, we selected a Oaxaca Mule. We also savored a shot of Espadín mezcal from Vago, a family-owned brand that crafts the spirit in small batches. We learned that the subtle notes of this mezcal and mezcal in general —featuring aniseed, green plantain, pine, and caramel— should be sipped slowly or, as Paul puts it, “kiss by kiss.” The magic of this distilled spirit stems from the romanticism inherent in the process, paired with the complexity of its aromas, flavors, and textures. Mezcal is distinguished for its smoky flavor, but its earthy and green notes are also worth noting. It is also worth mentioning that not all mezcals are smoky. “The smoky flavor of mezcal doesn’t come from its production process, which involves roasting the agave heads, or piñas, under the ground. It’s rather due to the chemical components of agave and the specific recipe of each maestro mezcalero. The drink is associated not only with an age-old ceremonial process, but also with medicinal effects. That’s why it’s so popular in Mexico.” Paul reminds us that “Tequila is a type of mezcal, but not all mezcals are tequila. Mezcal is produced different types of agave. The most common variety used to make mezcal is Espadín, which is mainly produced in Oaxaca.” According to Marcos Rivera, head bartender at Restaurante Ariel in Miramar, mezcal is a taste that is acquired gradually. “Most people who try mezcal are tequila aficionados, but mezcal, like whiskey, is so diverse that you can enjoy it neat or mix it with your favorite flavors.” Marcos believes that mezcal is ideal for mixology because “it offers a complex array of aromas. Besides, I always like to create an experience both for newcomers and for those who already love its smoky notes.” Mezcal made its way into the world of cocktails with a twist on the classic Margarita or the creation of the Oaxaca Old Fashioned. Marcos explains that this liquor is now featured in cocktails along with passion fruit, grapefruit, ginger, and even pickles. It’s versatile enough to use in any cocktail as a substitute for tequila or vodka, and its smokiness adds a unique twist to drinks typically made with whiskey or gin, such as the Negroni and the Martini. Next time you ask for a cocktail, give it a try with mezcal. You might find your new spirit of choice. Or even better, experience its flavor at home with this recipe from bartender Marcos Rivera. unque por un tiempo trató de evadirse del llamado de la sangre, al fin se dejó atrapar. A partir de ese instante, Hermes Croatto se enfocó en ser el artista que quería ser: el que honra sus raíces, pero en sus propios términos. Llevar el nombre de su padre, que es el mismo del dios griego con los pies alados, es una tremenda responsabilidad que Hermes va llevando con toda la gracia del mundo. Y es que el benjamín de los hermanos Croatto tiene charm. Y mucho. Por eso cuando llega al punto de encuentro de la entrevista en Café Regina en Santurce, sin guitarra ni vestuario, lo miran porque a leguas se nota que no es un paisano más. “Mi alma es bien vieja”, dice mientras se da un buche de café negro –sin azúcar, porque cree en saboreárselo como al vino, sin adulterarlo–. Hermes tiene 41 años que no aparenta y habla de la música de la montaña del cagüeño Ramito como si en efecto fuera un baby boomer. También comenta cómo

Por eso también es que, para imprimir su propia marca, no lanza producciones ni pauta sus conciertos en diciembre.

Therefore, in an effort to build his own brand, he never schedules concerts or releases in December.

En realidad, no somos puristas y eso le da un color especial a lo que hacemos”. La multiculturalidad es otro ingrediente de su fórmula. Si uno escarba en su música, descubre raíces variadas; del negro, del español, del jíbaro. “No importa quién vino, quién colonizaba y

He has kept good company in order to achieve this, including a diverse group of musicians and a very interesting partner that’s worked with him for the last couple of years: Eduardo Cabra, formerly known as Visitante Calle 13. “They’re creative kids. None of them is trained in folk instruments. We’re not exactly purists, and that adds a special flavor to what we do.” Multiculturalism is another ingredient in his recipe. Todo eso lo quisiera enaltecer en mi carrera, que no es una corta, para hacer dinero y ganar un Grammy”, comenta el cantautor de Pensando en ti, un tema que a nivel musical fusiona elementos folclóricos boricuas, dominicanos y uruguayos. Entonces, ni navideño ni de protesta. Lo de Hermes es un mix único: ser patriótico y enamorar al corazón. Eso es exactamente lo que se ha propuesto provocar con la canción que acaba de lanzar en noviembre y que le ha ayudado a producir nada menos que otro del clan Croatto. “Eres tú fue una de las primeras cosas que escribí. La había cantado, pero nunca llevado al estudio. Y estoy bien contento de lo que salió, porque tengo la bendición de tener a mi sobrino Ale, que es el productor de esa canción, y de tener a mis músicos y a Eduardo Cabra y Sebastián Otero”. Esa canción larga, de casi cinco minutos de duración, como que tiene magia. Logra “juntar” de una manera inesperada a Hermes y a Tony, con un audio de una entrevista del fenecido cantante en medio de la melodía. Hermes confiesa que cuando escribió Eres tú, atravesaba un proceso de descubrimiento. Rememora que, de adolescente, trató de “matar” al artista en él. Pero lo que se lleva en el ADN es difícil de eliminar, y el suyo estaba repleto de la cosa artística de parte de su padre músico y su madre, la cantante y actriz, Glorivee.

It’s not about getting rich fast and winning a Grammy,” remarks the singer-songwriter of Pensando en ti, a song that fuses folk music elements from Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, and Uruguay. So, it’s safe to say Hermes won’t be putting out a Christmas album anytime soon. His thing is a unique combination of patriotism and heartfelt romance. And that is exactly what he set out to do with his latest song (just released in November), which he coproduced with no less than another member of the Croatto clan. “Eres tú was one of the first things I wrote. I had performed it, but I never brought it into the studio. I’m really happy with how it turned out. I was fortunate to have help from my nephew Ale, who produced the song, as well as my musicians, Eduardo Cabra, and Sebastián Otero.” The song—which runs relatively long at almost 5 minutes—has its own magic. It surprises listeners by bringing Hermes and Tony together through the inclusion of an audio clip from an interview with the late singer. Hermes reveals that when he penned Eres tú, he was going through a process of self-discovery. He recalls trying to “kill” the artist within when he was a teenager. But you can’t deny what’s in your DNA, and his was brimming with artistic talent inherited from both his father, a musician, and his mother, singer and actress Glorivee.

It may be due to his golden rule, which he says he adopted very early on: be genuine—no characters, no hashtags. “I’m Hermes. That’s all I am,” he concludes with aplomb. Even knowing that no family has a perfect past, he feels pride in his roots and is determined to honor them.

Entre las líneas se encuentran: mantén un comportamiento ejemplar, demuestra una actitud respetuosa y, además de bailar, haz nuevas y buenas amistades. La sonrisa de Agnes Colón, propietaria del estudio, es contagiosa particularmente cuando recorre las paredes del estudio pobladas de fotografías que demuestran su larga trayectoria, tanto en su faceta de bailarina como en las varias décadas en que ha sido instructora de baile. “Cosas bonitas que la vida le da a uno”, afirma.

Dancing Towards Happiness A message on one of the main doors sets the scene for what you’ll experience once you step onto the dance floor at Agnes Colón Dance Studio in Guaynabo. Some of his lines encourage readers to lead by example, to be respectful, and (along with dancing) to make new and good friendships. Agnes Colón, owner of the studio, has a beaming smile that proves contagious as she walks through her studio proudly displaying photos from her decades-long career as a professional dancer and dance instructor. “These are examples of the blessings that life grants us,” she says.

Antes de convertirse en un referente en el baile creció rodeada por la música. En la casa familiar disfrutaban escucharla. La pequeña Agnes no perdía el tiempo y recuerda que bailaba libremente al ritmo de cualquier son. Esos primeros pasos se convirtieron en ese primer amor, como solemos llamarlo. Desde muy temprana edad, ella soñó con hacer del baile su profesión. Sin embargo, la tradición que permeaba en aquel entonces dictaba que una mujer debía dedicarse a una carrera con más decoro y menos controversia, y la familia de Agnes no fue la excepción. Se dedicó, pues, a hacer una carrera en Economía que terminó con el fin de cumplir con el mandato de sus padres. Pero la idea de bailar, de moverse con plena libertad, ya fuese en la sala de su casa o en una inmensa pista de baile, seguía ahí, latente. Agnes recuerda claramente el día que cambió el resto de su vida. Un bailarín necesitaba a una compañera de baile para juntos presentarse en un espectáculo en el hotel Caribe Hilton. Sin titubeo, una amiga en común los conectó. Este primer encuentro con el baile como profesión la llevó a abandonar las convencionalidades e ir en pos de revivir la felicidad que conoció de niña. Esta nueva ruta en su vida in82

Before she was a well-known dancer, she had a musical upbringing. Her family enjoyed listening to it, and little Agnes wouldn’t waste any time; she remembers moving freely to the songs they played. And it was through these steps that she discovered her first love: dance. From a very early age, it was her dream to become a professional dancer. But the customs of the time dictated women to pursue more discreet and less controversial careers, and Agnes’s family made no exceptions in that regard. So, she decided to follow her parents’ wishes and pursue a career in economics. But the dream of dancing and moving freely, whether in her own living room or on a large dance floor, never left her. Agnes clearly remembers the day that changed the course of her life: There was a dancer in need of a partner to perform at a show at the Caribe Hilton hotel. A mutual friend connected them without hesitation. It was this first encounter with professional dance that made her leave her conventional life behind and steer a course toward reviving the happiness she knew as a young girl.

Aunque todavía tenía lazos con sus estudios en Economía, Agnes prosiguió con su nueva profesión, ofreciendo clases de baile a domicilio, particularmente a los vecinos del área de San Francisco. Con el pasar de los años, estudiantes de todas las edades, desde niños de 8 años hasta adultos, han aprendido a bailar tangos, sevillanas, vals, salsa, entre otros géneros, bajo la tutela de Agnes Colón. “El que viene aquí tiene que venir con un propósito”, profesa la mujer a preguntas de Guaynabo Bound. Tan pronto comienza a hablar de sus alumnos, a Agnes se le ilumina el rostro. Por la academia han pasado muchos estudiantes, como el exgobernador de Puerto Rico Luis Fortuño, y cada uno ha reafirmado en ella la responsabilidad que tiene para con ellos: no tan solo enseñarles a bailar, sino también ayudarlos

With this new lease on life came new job opportunities, some of which took her to places far beyond Puerto Rico. She danced in commercials for well-known clients such as Chiclets Adams as well as in parades in the UK, Madrid, and Argentina, where she delved into different dance styles. With time, she fulfilled her dream of becoming a dancer, and she went on to become a dance instructor. Agnes Colón Dance Studio began in a small room in an aunt’s house. Although still connected to her economics studies, Agnes pursued her new career. She offered at-home dance lessons, mostly in the San Francisco area of San Juan. Over the years, students of all ages, from children as young as 8 years old to adults, have learned, under her skilled eye, the steps to the tango, sevillanas, waltz, salsa, and many others. “Those who come here must do so with a purpose,” Colón told Guaynabo Bound, her face lighting up as soon as she starts talking about her students. Her academy has seen many students (including former Puerto Rico Governor Luis Fortuño), and each one has reinforced the commitment she has with each of them: to not only teach GUAYNABO BOUND

a desarrollar modales, a ser cordiales con los demás y a tener una autoestima más alta. Esta es la manera en que Agnes se asegura de transmitir su visión de la felicidad a sus estudiantes. Las paredes del estudio evidencian que lo ha logrado, que sí se puede ser feliz bailando. Se ve claramente en los rostros de los antiguos estudiantes que hoy día llevan a sus hijos a vivir la misma experiencia, en los múltiples premios obtenidos por las pasadas cuatro décadas y en la manera en que el propio hijo de Agnes manifiesta la misma pasión que ha visto en su madre desde que tiene uso de razón. Para pertenecer a Agnes Colón Dance Studio no es necesario ser un bailarín profesional; para eso van a él, para aprender a bailar. Lo más importante, subraya la experimentada bailarina, es que cada persona que cruce por la puerta venga dispuesta a tener disciplina y a ser feliz. 84

them how to dance, but also instruct them in good manners, kindness toward others, and a greater sense of self-esteem. This is how Agnes ensures her vision of happiness reaches her students. The walls of her studio are a testament to that accomplishment: she did dance her way to happiness. It is evident in the faces of her former students who now bring their children to enjoy the same experience, in the many accolades she’s received over the past four decades, and in the way her own son radiates the same passion he’s seen in his mother for as long as he can remember. You don’t have to be a professional dancer to join Agnes Colón Dance Studio; you come here to learn. In the end, the most important step, as the skilled dancer points out, is that each person who walks through those doors is willing to learn discipline and to be happy.

Celebrates Its 1st Anniversary in Puerto Rico The iconic Tiffany & Co. blue illuminated the façade of the Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico to celebrate the first anniversary of the jewelry house on the island. The commemorative event was held in the museum’s courtyard, decorated by Ana Cintrón of Casa Flor, and the guests were treated to a dinner prepared by Chef Ariel of Ariel Restaurant. Tommy Torres and the duo Buscabulla were the musical highlights of the evening.
