La Madre Patria (for you English-speakers, “Spain”) called, and I answered. I packed my bags—with light, comfortable clothes, because in Spain, summers are hot and muggy—and went, first to Madrid and then, by train, to Barcelona. How wonderful to travel again! Stroll down streets filled with history, learn something on every visit to a museum, savor the taste of the Iberian Peninsula (so far away yet so close to us), and breathe in the soft salt air of the Mediterranean. . . . Traveling is part of us, and after a year and a half of restrictions, there’s no doubt that any escape will feel like sipping the finest wine in the bodega. This trip of mine was one of those when you walk and walk and walk, take everything in, discover things you never knew or saw before, and come back home with boundless energy to slip back into your daily life. A few months before welcoming in the new year 2022, and with our fingers crossed for putting the worldwide crisis we’ve been facing behind us, it’s important to take a little break, give ourselves permission for a getaway. I invite you to pack your bags and prepare to recharge. Where you go doesn’t matter. Any little piece of earth different from your “here” will do. Durante una caminata por los alrededores del campo de golf de Dorado del Mar me topé con este árbol de almendro. Su follaje, una mezcla de hojas verduzcas y rojas, captó mi atención. De una de sus recias ramas cuelga un columpio sencillo, pero divertido. Sonreí al verlo; recordé las veces que me mecí en uno parecido cuando era niña, y hasta sentí mariposas en el estómago como en aquellos tiempos. En el umbral de la normalidad espero seguir disfrutando de estas grandes nimiedades. During a walk in the neighborhood around the Dorado del Mar golf course, I came across this almond tree. Its foliage, a mixture of greenish and red leaves, caught my attention. From one of its gnarly branches was hanging a simple rope swing—simple, but it looked fun! I smiled when I saw it; I remembered the times I’d swung in one when I was just a girl, and I even got butterflies in my stomach, just like back then. These days, on the verge of normality, I hope to enjoy more of these big “little pleasures.”

Vecinos y amantes del folclor llevan reuniéndose más de tres décadas en las riberas del río La Plata en Dorado para celebrar el oficio de los pescadores de orilla, esos hombres y mujeres que, generación tras generación, pescan para satisfacer las necesidades de sus familias. Originalmente, el Festival de la Cocolía se realizaba cerca del puente, en el pueblo de Dorado. Luego, el alcalde Carlos López Rivera repensó el concepto y este se movió al área recreativa Ojo del Buey, en el barrio Mameyal. Así, locales y turistas podrían conocer más de la zona en donde desemboca el río La Plata y que guarda algunas de las leyendas del pirata Cofresí y su tesoro. Este año, al igual que el pasado, el festival está en pausa por la emergencia del COVID-19. Sin embargo, bien vale recordar que es para estas fechas (agosto) que el barrio Mameyal recibe a unas 3,000 personas para celebrar nuestra cultura costera. “La festividad de un día incluye dos competencias: una para quien capture [a través de la pesca de línea] la cocolía [cangrejo] con el casco más grande. Y otra para quien capture la mayor cantidad. Se han pescado crustáceos con un casco de hasta

Neighbors and lovers of tradition have been gathering for more than thirty years on the banks of the La Plata River in Dorado to celebrate the skill of bank fishers, those men and women who, generation after generation, catch crabs to meet the needs of their families. Originally, the Blue Crab Festival was held near the bridge in the town of Dorado, but the town’s mayor, Carlos López Rivera, revamped the concept and the festival was moved to the Ojo de Buey recreational area in Barrio Mameyal. That way, locals and tourists could become more familiar with the area where the La Plata runs into the ocean—an area which, folktales (and history) tell us, was the sometime home of the pirate Cofresí and his treasure. This year, like last year, the festival is on hold due to the COVID-19 emergency, but it bears remembering that it’s around this time (August) that Barrio Mameyal welcomes some three thousand visitors to celebrate our coastal culture. “The one-day festival includes two contests: one for the person who catches [by line fishing] the cocolía [blue crab] with the biggest shell, and another for the person who catches the most crabs. Some of these crabs have been caught with shells up to 8 inches across. First place wins $300, second place, $200, and third place, $100.

A estos últimos se les orienta sobre cómo hacerlo”, detalla Manuel Santiago Castellano, director de la Oficina de Asuntos Culturales de Dorado. Cada año el festival se le dedica a un pescador por su trayectoria o a vecinos destacados de Mameyal. “Es una aventura para el visitante. La festividad inicia a la entrada del área recreativa, en donde son recibidos por la música de pleneros o de un steel band. Además, se ponen algunos quioscos de artesanías y los presentes caminan unos 500 metros en la arena hasta llegar al área de la tarima, de espaldas a la desembocadura del río. Tenemos un tablado de unos 100 pies cuadrados para que la gente baile al ritmo de reconocidos salseros o exponentes de bomba y plena”, explica Santiago Castellano. Durante el festival hay competencias de voleibol de playa y exhibiciones de boxeo. Además, todos los quioscos de comida deben tener, aunque sea, un plato confeccionado con cocolía. 22

We show the newcomers and amateurs how to do it,” says Manuel Santiago Castellano, director of the Dorado Office of Cultural Affairs. Each year the festival is dedicated to a fisherman or -woman whose career merits the honor, or to a distinguished resident of Mameyal. “It’s an adventure for visitors. The festival begins at the entrance to the recreational area, where visitors are welcomed with music by pleneros or a steel band. There are kiosks with craftspeople, also. Visitors then walk about five hundred yards through the sand to the area of the raised stage, which stands in front of the mouth of La Plata. We have a stage about a hundred feet square for people to dance to the music of well-known salseros or musicians playing bomba and plena,” explains Santiago Castellano. During the festival, there are beach volleyball competitions and boxing exhibitions. Plus, all the food kiosks are required to serve at least one dish made with blue crab.

Existen maestros que inspiran, que llenan de positivismo a sus alumnos. Ese es el caso de María Teresa “Maritere” Matosantos. Dialogar con ella te llena de ánimo porque apuesta a que, con esfuerzo, todo es posible. La educadora laboró en el Colegio Rosa-Bell y es una de las socias fundadoras de TASIS Dorado. “Recuerdo siempre haber ayudado a mis compañeras. Ellas decían que les daba tutorías, pero para mí era estudiar porque mientras les explicaba, yo repasaba. Tenía una vecina que estaba atravesando por algo muy profundo y ella pensaba que no iba a pasar de grado porque estaba triste y preocupada. Le dije: ‘Vamos a estudiar juntas, que vas a poder’, y ese es el primer recuerdo que tengo de mis deseos de ser maestra. Cuando ella tuvo su diploma de cuarto año fue y se lo dio a sus papás, los abrazó y luego vino donde mí. Eso para mí fue bien importante”, rememora Maritere, quien estudió historia en la universidad. Otros dos momentos determinantes para su estilo de enseñanza ocurrieron cuando ya era adulta. Durante su bachillerato en Newton College of the Sacred Heart (Massachusetts) una maestra de literatura le dijo que jamás iba a entender a Shakespeare. “Me di de baja de la clase. Boba yo. Me prometí que jamás le haría algo así a un estudiante”, expresa. El tercer momento ocurrió con su hijo mayor, José Matosantos. “Tuve un parto bien difícil. Cuando fueron a romper fuente se dieron cuenta que él estaba con dificultad respiratoria y, en aquel entonces, no existían pruebas [para determinar si había sufrido algún daño]. 24

There are teachers who inspire, who fill their students with positivity. And that’s the case with María Teresa “Maritere” Matosantos. Speaking with her fills you with hope and optimism because she believes, fervently, that with effort, anything is possible. Maritere worked at Colegio Rosa-Bell and is one of the founders of TASIS Dorado. “I remember that I always helped the other girls in my classes. They would ask me to tutor them, but for me it was studying, because while I explained things to them, I was reviewing it for myself. I had a neighbor who was going through a very hard time, and she thought she wasn’t going to pass the grade because she was so depressed and worried. I said to her: ‘Let’s study together, you’ll make it.’ And that’s the first memory I have of my desire to be a teacher. When that girl got her high school diploma, she went and gave it to her parents, hugged them, and then she came over to my house. That, to me, was very important,” Maritere, who studied history in college, recalls. Two other decisive moments for her teaching style occurred after she became an adult. During her undergraduate years at Newton College of the Sacred Heart in Massachusetts, a literature professor told her that she would never understand Shakespeare. “I dropped her class. Silly me. I promised myself that I would never do anything like that to a student,” she says. The other moment took place with her eldest son, José Matosantos. “I had a very difficult labor. When my

Estaba muy adelantado, pero le costaba escribir. Me recomendaron a una terapista ocupacional. Ella atendía muchos estudiantes a la vez. Fui a la primera cita con él, pero en la segunda me presenté sola. Le dije: ‘Quiero que me enseñe a mí y yo se lo enseño a él’. Existían pocos recursos en esa época y quise ayudarlo. En tercer grado ganó el concurso de caligrafía”, recuerda con orgullo. “Creo que su reto se hubiera resuelto solo, pero era importante que le diéramos esa atención. Esa experiencia me ayudó a ver que cada estudiante tiene la posibilidad y el potencial, y que somos nosotros, los adultos, los que decimos ‘no va a poder hacer esto’”, afirma la educadora con casi tres décadas de experiencia como maestra y principal. Maritere apuesta a nuestra juventud y a su visión de que el liderazgo es una cualidad que debe enseñarse. Le preocupa la educación pública de la isla. Por eso su labor como presidenta de la Junta de Directores de Jane Stern Community Library complementa su faceta profesional. De joven ella vio cómo aprender de la mano de otro da resultados. Por eso, fomenta el desarrollo de un programa de tutorías en la biblioteca para que estudiantes de TASIS Dorado apoyen a alumnos de escuelas públicas. En el plano personal siempre quiso ser abuela, y gracias a la tecnología puede disfrutar de sus nietos; Isa, de 14, y Lucas, de 12, quienes residen en Australia junto a su hijo José y su nuera Johana. Vive orgullosa también de su hija, Ana Matosantos, quien fue miembro de la Junta de Supervisión y Administración Financiera para Puerto Rico. “Ana se mete en líos que no se tiene que meter, igual que la madre”, comenta entre risas. Además, su casa se llena de alegría con las ocurrencias de José Daniel, el hijo de una exgerente de la librería Castle Books, en San Patricio, donde Maritere trabajó luego de haber dirigido Rosa-Bell. Ella es como una hija. “Me dice mami y a mi esposo papi, y cuando se casó desfiló del brazo de mi esposo”, comenta feliz. Sobre su filosofía de vida dice: “Siempre estoy pensando qué puedo hacer para ayudar. Pienso en cómo apoyar a los nenes que no aprenden igual. Si todo el mundo dedicara tiempo para realizar un poco de trabajo voluntario, transformaríamos la isla”. 26

water was about to be broken, they discovered that he was having respiratory difficulties, and back then there were no tests [to determine whether he had suffered any damage]. The pediatrician evaluated him regularly and thank God, he developed just fine. But in pre-kinder they discovered that he had poor eye-hand coordination. He was very bright, but he had trouble writing. They recommended an occupational therapist, but she dealt with several students at a time. I went to the first appointment with him, but for the second appointment, I went by myself. I told her: ‘I want you to show me, and I’ll teach him.’ There were not many resources at that time, and I wanted to help him. In the third grade, he won the handwriting prize,” she recalls proudly. “I think he would have resolved his challenge on his own, but it was important that we give him that attention. That experience helped me to see that every student has possibility and potential, and that it’s we adults who say ‘he’s not going to be able to do this,’” Maritere, with almost thirty years’ experience as a teacher and principal, declares firmly. Maritere Matosantos believes in our young people and in her vision that leadership is a quality that should be taught. She’s concerned about public education on the island. That’s why her work as chairwoman of the Board of Directors of the Jane Stern Community Library complements her professional work. As a young woman, she saw for herself that learning under the tutelage of another person gives results, so now she supports the development of a tutoring program at the Library so that students from TASIS Dorado can support public school students. On a personal level, she always wanted to be a grandmother, and thanks to technology she can enjoy her grandchildren Isa, 14, and Lucas, 12, who live in Australia with her son José and his wife Johana. She’s also very proud of her daughter, Ana Matosantos, who was a member of the Financial Oversight and Management Board for Puerto Rico. “Ana gets herself into things she doesn’t have to get into, just like her mother,” Maritere laughs. Her house is also filled with joy and laughter because of the funny things she hears young José Daniel say. He’s the son of a former manager of Castle Books, in San Patricio Plaza, where Maritere worked after being principal of Rosa-Bell. The two women became close friends, and now, Maritere says, she’s like a daughter to her. “She calls me mami and my husband papi, and when she got married my husband walked her down the aisle,” she smiles as she remembers. About her philosophy of life Maritere has this to say: “I’m always thinking what I can do to help. I think about how to support the kids who don’t learn like other kids. If everyone devoted some time to doing a little volunteer work, we could transform the island.”

“La invención no consiste en crear a partir del vacío, sino del caos”, escribió Mary Shelley, autora de Frankenstein. Y algo así fue lo que le pasó a la maestra doradeña, Yadira Huertas Santiago. Unos meses antes de los sismos y la pandemia, Yadira había empezado a trabajar en la escuela elemental Jacinto López Martínez en Dorado: el mismo plantel escolar donde ella recibió su educación elemental. Estaba feliz con la experiencia, sin embargo, trabajar presencialmente en su alma mater duró poco por las emergencias de 2020. “Invention does not consist in creating out of void, but out of chaos,” wrote Mary Shelley, the author of Frankenstein. And something along those lines is what happened to Dorado teacher Yadira Huertas Santiago. Several months before the earthquakes and the pandemic, Yadira, now 33 years old and studying for her master’s degree in School Administration and Leadership, had started working at Jacinto López Martínez Elementary School in Dorado, the same school she’d attended as a girl. She was happy with the experience, although working in person at her alma mater didn’t last long, due to the 2020 shutdown. doradobound

Entre tantos cambios surgieron dos de los proyectos que la mantienen muy activa: La Banda Musical, su primer libro para niños, y la inauguración del cuido y escuela New Generation Kids Academy, en Dorado. “Entre los terremotos y la pandemia, le presenté a Frank Ortiz, editor de Ediciones Eleos, el borrador de un guion que quería convertir en una obra de teatro sobre instrumentos musicales. Frank, quien va a la iglesia que asisto, Casa de Bendición, me dijo: ‘Yadira, puedes convertir este guion en un libro’”, narra la educadora de 33 años. Ortiz le pidió unos dibujos para ilustrar la historia. Ella le compartió sus ideas a un amigo maestro, quien preparó las ilustraciones. “El editor conocía a mi amigo Sam Soto. Sin yo saberlo hablaron entre sí y trabajaron el proyecto. No le di cabeza. Me olvidé y a finales de marzo el editor me dio la copia del libro. ¡Fue una sorpresa!”, expresa la también mamá de Isabela y Camila Olivo, de ocho y doce años, respectivamente. Mientras todo eso pasaba, y un poquito antes del cierre (lockdown) de 2020, Yadira se sentía drenada emocionalmente. Sus malestares empezaron a pasarle factura físicamente, así que visitó a su doctor de cabecera, Josué Canales. Durante la cita, el médico recordó que Yadira fue cuidadora de su hija en un centro preescolar. “El doctor Canales recordó la canción que canté en el Día de Logros de su hija. El coro decía: ‘Sí, sí, yo voy a mí’. Entonces me dijo: ‘Este edificio era una escuela antes. Soy doctor, no sé de negocios, dale por ahí pa’ bajo, poco a poco’”, rememora la estudiante de maestría en Administración y Liderazgo Escolar. Dos días antes del cierre por la cuarentena Yadira estaba llevando sillas al local que le ofreció su doctor, lugar que hoy día es un cuido y una escuela hasta segundo grado. ¿Sus planes futuros? Leer su libro La Banda Musical en escuelas y colegios, y hacer un proyecto de música sacra para niños. El caminar de Yadira es uno lleno de esperanza y por eso comparte con otros su testimonio: “El tiempo de Dios es el mejor, créele y él obrará a tu favor. Confía y lánzate”.

Out of all the changes emerged two of the projects that keep her busy today: La Banda Musical, her first children’s book, and the inauguration of the childcare center and school New Generation Kids Academy in Dorado. “Between the earthquakes and the pandemic, I showed Frank Ortiz, the publisher at Ediciones Eleos, the draft of a script I wanted to turn into a play about musical instruments. Frank, who goes to the same church as I do, Casa de Bendición, told me, ‘Yadira, you could turn this script into a book,’” Yadira tells us. Ortiz asked her for some drawings to illustrate the story. She shared her ideas with a teacher-friend, who prepared the illustrations. “The publisher knew my friend Sam Soto. Without my knowing, they talked to each other and developed the project. I didn’t pay much attention. I forgot about it, but in late March the publisher gave me a copy of the book. What a surprise!” says the mother of Isabela and Camila Olivo, eight and twelve years old, respectively. While all this was happening, and a little before the lockdown in 2020, Yadira felt emotionally drained. Her distress began to take a physical toll on her, so she visited her doctor, Josué Canales. During the visit, the doctor remembered that Yadira had taken care of his daughter at a preschool center. “Dr. Canales remembered the song I’d sung at his daughter’s Achievement Day ceremony. The chorus goes Sí, sí, yo voy a mí, which is like Yeah, yeah, my bet’s on me! So, he told me, ‘This building was a school before. I’m a doctor, I don’t know anything about business, but try it out, little by little.’ Two days before the lockdown, Yadira was carrying chairs into the space the doctor had offered her, the space that today is a childcare center and elementary school through the second grade. Yadira’s plans for the future? To read her book La Banda Musical in schools and to do a sacred-music project for children. Yadira’s path is lighted by hopefulness, which is why she shares her testimony with others: “God’s time is the best; believe in Him and He will work for you. Have faith and go for it.”

Cambiar de actitud o un patrón de conducta trae su cuota de incomodidad y requiere de una suprema fuerza de voluntad. As crustaceans grow, they molt, shedding their exoskeletons that become too tight. Reptiles do the same thing with their skins, from head to tail, in a very dramatic way. Change is inevitable, although sometimes we run from it like we would from a close encounter with a chupacabra. And that’s understandable. Who would want to deliberately subject themselves to pain? Changing your attitude or pattern of behavior entails a good deal of discomfort and a tremendous amount of willpower. doradobound

Contacta a esa vieja amiga que puede darte la mano. Alimenta tu espiritualidad para que te quieras un poco más que a las personas de las que eres devota y te dañan. Deja ir; perdona; entiende; aprende porque cada vez que lo haces renuevas tu piel y ganas otra posibilidad de vida. Renacer no será fácil, pero vale la pena. 34

You confront me with the reality that my steps will be lighter and swifter if I shrug off some of my unnecessary load. Take advantage of the winds and the rains to seize control of whatever it is that is weighing you down, slowing you down, exhausting you. Ask some organization or specialized professional for help. Try a new treatment. Contact that old friend who can give you a hand. Nourish your spirituality so you love yourself a little more than the people you’re devoted to but who hurt you. Let things go; forgive; understand; learn, so that every time you do these things, your old skin will slough off and renew itself and you’ll have another chance at life. Being reborn won’t be easy, but it’s worth it.

De París a Londres, y de Milán a Nueva York, los grandes exponentes de la moda buscan la respuesta a esta interrogante: ¿cuál es el destino de la moda pospandemia? A modo de trasfondo, recordemos la tendencia del fast fashion que surgió durante el comienzo del tercer milenio (2001). Esta nueva manera de vestir se manifestó a través de la búsqueda continua del confort, lo que redundó en un pobre sentido de gusto y un exceso de fibras sintéticas. Casi veinte años más tarde, en 2020, el mercado comenzó a inclinarse en la búsqueda de la sustentabilidad y la responsabilidad social, ligado a marcas y productos de moda. Esta preferencia se exacerbó a causa de la polarización social, económica y política, así como al reclamo por la justicia social y climática. A esto hay que añadirle la reciente crisis de salud mundial por el COVID-19 y a más de un año de distanciamiento físico. Todos estos factores han dado paso a un renovado sentido de gusto por la moda artesanal, el arte del buen vestir y los estilos clásicos, que nos ayudan a sentirnos en mayor control de nuestra apariencia personal y a proyectar una imagen de seguridad en tiempos de grandes retos. Dorado has a neighbor close by that will go the extra mile to ensure the community’s hearts don’t skip a beat. Bayamón Medical Center, located in the heart of Bayamón and just next door to Dorado, recently announced it had acquired the da Vinci Xi robotic surgery system.

“El sistema da Vinci Xi, a través de la cirugía robótica, permite a los cirujanos realizar procedimientos más precisos, menos invasivos y de menor riesgo”, dijo José S. Rosado, director ejecutivo del Bayamón Medical Center y del Puerto Rico Women and Children’s Hospital. “Además, el uso del da Vinci Xi ofrece al paciente la oportunidad de recuperarse en menos tiempo en comparación con otras cirugías en las que no se utiliza esta tecnología”.

La comedia ha sacado a Alejandro Gil de esos apuros cotidianos que todos vivimos. “Me zafaba de problemas haciendo un chiste de alguna situación difícil. Termino las confrontaciones con alguna nota jocosa. Era el payaso de la clase, pero con buenas notas”, afirma el comediante y empresario doradeño de treintaicuatro años. Alejandro es un torbellino de energía. En un solo día puede conceder una entrevista desde su carro, conectado desde su celular para obtener la mejor señal. Luego, puedes escucharlo a través de las ondas radiales, junto a Danilo Beauchamp, en El Reguero en La Nueva 94 FM. En sus espacios libres atiende llamadas relacionadas a sus negocios –entre ellos el restaurante Casita Guavate en Cayey– o bien cuadra algún asunto relacionado a un Airbnb que quiere desarrollar en Vieques. Después, sale a cenar con su familia y amigos, siempre con el celular en la mano, grabando lo que ve y experimenta para subirlo a su vlog. Otras veces realiza entrevistas para su pódcast, La Embarré. Pareciera como si su mente no descansara. Todas esas experiencias, junto con las situaciones cotidianas del país, le sirven de motor para generar comedia. La risa y la estrategia marcan su vida Para Alejandro, “la risa es un desahogo y la comedia es todo”. Es un hombre de muchos sombreros, pero cuando se le pregunta cómo se define, sin dudarlo dice: “Soy un stand-up comedian”. Asegura que puede ser feliz haciendo uno o dos espectáculos de stand-up comedy anuales y dedicar el resto del año a sus negocios.

Comedy has rescued Alejandro Gil from some of those daily tight spots we get ourselves into. “I’d shake off problems by making a joke about some tough situation. I disarm confrontations with a funny line. I was the class clown, but with good grades,” the 34-year-old comedian and Dorado businessman says. Alejandro is a whirlwind of energy. In a single day, he can give an interview from his car, connected by cell phone for a better signal. Then you can listen to him on the radio, with Danilo Beauchamp, on their show El Reguero on La Nueva 94 FM. In his spare time, he answers phone calls related to his businesses, among them the restaurant Casita Guavate in Cayey, or deals with some issue related to an Airbnb that he wants to develop in Vieques. Later, he goes out to eat with his family and friends, cell phone always at the ready, recording what he sees and experiences so he can upload it to his vlog. Other times he’ll be doing interviews for his podcast, La Embarré (I Messed Up). His mind never seems to rest. All those experiences, plus the day-to-day situations on the island, become fuel for his comedy. Laughter and strategy mark his life For Alejandro, “laughter is a relief valve, and comedy is everything.” He’s a man who wears many hats, but when he’s asked how he defines himself, he immediately answers: “I’m a stand-up comedian.” He says he can be happy doing one or two stand-up shows a year and devoting the rest of the year to his businesses. doradobound

“El mundo del entretenimiento me ha enseñado a vivir en una constante urgencia. Es un mundo traicionero; hoy estás, mañana no. Llevo doce años trabajando en comedia, pero siempre he tenido esa urgencia en mi cabeza. Por eso empecé a abrir negocios. Tuve una compañía de producción por ocho años. Un día hice un evento y perdí mucho dinero. Me frustré porque es como una lotería. Decidí que quería invertir en cosas que duren. Por eso empecé a buscar ideas de negocio”, afirma el talento del programa Los HP de Mega TV. Con eso en mente, hace un tiempo trabajó muy duro para desarrollar un hogar de envejecientes en Guaynabo. Tanto el realtor como su papá, quien es arquitecto y le ayudó a diseñar el hogar, le recordaron que debía revisar la zonificación del área. Alejandro pensó que ningún vecino se opondría al hogar. El asunto llegó a los tribunales, pero perdió. Y ese suceso “es mi embarrá más grande”, dice con resignación el residente de Dorado. A pesar del revés, Alejandro tiene la esperanza de desarrollar un hogar en el futuro. Para el proyecto fallido llegó a estudiar gerontología –así de grande es su interés. Dorado: su playground “Mi primera memoria de chiquito es yo corriendo bicicleta con mi familia por el campo de golf que estaba abandonado en Dorado del Mar. Recuerdo las cuestitas y que llegábamos hasta el matorral en donde hoy está el hotel Embassy Suites”, rememora feliz. “Fui un niño contento. Vivía en una urbanización que era un playground. Nací en una burbuja cool porque aquí en Dorado podía ir solo a comer en un fast food. Nací en un espacio que fomentaba la familia y las amistades cercanas”, detalla. Ya en su adolescencia, junto a sus primos, empezó a escuchar shows de stand-up comedy mientras daban vueltas en carro por Dorado. Recién graduado de escuela superior empezó a hacer stand-up comedy en locales en San Juan. Mientras estudiaba publicidad, su oportunidad de hacer comedia en televisión llegó cuando ganó la competencia Objetivo Club Sunshine. Desde entonces no ha parado de hacer reír y crear para radio, televisión y redes sociales. Su meta a corto a plazo es aprovechar todas sus intervenciones en los medios para obtener el capital para seguir emprendiendo. Por ejemplo, quiere abrir un segundo restaurante Casita Guavate, pero esta vez en Dorado. En dos años se imagina teniendo hijos con su esposa Juliet Castro y “bajándole un poco a la intensidad para viajar más”. Como él, anhela que sus futuros hijos se críen en Dorado para que disfruten de la tranquilidad y de la ventaja de tener la playa cerquita.

“The world of entertainment has taught me to live with a constant sense of urgency. It’s a fickle world: today you’re in, tomorrow you’re not. I’ve been working in comedy for twelve years, but I’ve always had that sense of urgency in my head. That’s why I opened my businesses. I had a production company for eight years. One day I did an event and lost a lot of money. I got frustrated, because it’s like a crap shoot, you never know how something will turn out. I decided I wanted to invest in things that last. So I started looking for business ideas,” the cast member of the program Los HP, at Mega TV, tells us. With that in mind, some time ago he worked very hard to develop an assisted living home for seniors in Guaynabo. Both the realtor and Alejandro’s father, who’s an architect and who helped him design the home, reminded him to check the zoning for the area. Alejandro thought that no neighbor would object to the project. The issue ended up in court; he lost. And that, he says resignedly, is “my biggest mess-up.” Despite the setback, Alejandro has hopes of developing a seniors’ home in the future. For the failed project, he wound up studying gerontology. That’s how committed to the idea he is. Dorado: His Playground “My first memory as a kid is riding my bike with my family over the abandoned golf course in Dorado del Mar. I remember the little hills and that we rode to the scrubland where the Embassy Suites Hotel is now,” he recalls happily. “I was a happy kid. I lived in a neighborhood that was a total playground. I was born into a cool bubble, because here in Dorado you could go by yourself to a fast-food place. I was born into a place that fostered family life and close friends,” he goes on. In his teenage years, he and his cousins started listening to standup comedy shows as they drove around Dorado. When he graduated from high school, he started doing standup in venues in San Juan. While he studied advertising, he got his chance to do standup on TV when he won the Objetivo Club Sunshine contest. Since then, he’s never stopped making people laugh, never stopped creating for radio, television, and social media. His short-term goal is to take advantage of all his appearances in the media to earn enough money to keep creating and managing businesses. For example, he wants to open a second Casita Guavate restaurant, but this time in Dorado. In two years, he sees himself having kids with his wife Juliet Castro and “dialing down the intensity a bit so we can travel more.” He wants his kids to grow up in Dorado like he did, so they can enjoy the peace and tranquility, plus the advantage of having a beach nearby.

Es colombiana, pero criada en Estados Unidos, y comparte con su esposo boricua la pasión por la cocina. Él es un experto en comida asiática y ella confecciona bizcochos y postres veganos, libres de gluten y lácteos. “Mi hermana es alérgica a los mariscos, las nueces, el gluten y los huevos. De niñas probábamos postres veganos, pero no nos gustaban. Hacer postres es una ciencia. Así que en la universidad (Johnson & Wales University) empecé a hacer experimentos para que quedaran ricos y descubrí este mundo de ingredientes naturales. Mi especialidad es hacer postres para personas que padecen de alergia. Tengo clientes que me compran hace diez años”, comenta orgullosa la repostera de 31 años. ¿Sus planes futuros? “Me fascinaría abrir un local en donde las familias puedan tomarse un buen café, con un postre exquisito. Que los clientes puedan venir a estudiar o a tener una reunión. Ya existen cafés en Dorado, pero se llenan mucho. Quiero que exista una nueva opción”, dice entusiasmada.

Colombian-born but raised in the United States, Daysi shares her passion for cooking with her husband. He’s an expert in Asian food, while she makes vegan cakes and desserts, free of gluten and milk products. “My sister is allergic to seafoods, nuts, gluten, and eggs. As girls, we would try vegan desserts, but we didn’t like them. Making desserts is a science. So, at university (Johnson & Wales University), I started doing experiments to try to make them delicious, and I discovered this world of natural ingredients. My specialty is making desserts for people with allergies. I have customers who’ve been buying from me for as long as ten years,” the 31-year-old pastry chef says proudly. Her future plans? “I’d love to open a shop where families can have a good cup of coffee with a glorious dessert. Where customers can come to study or have a meeting. There are cafés in Dorado, but they’re always full. I want there to be a new option,” she says enthusiastically.

El bizcocho de chocolate, con ganache de chocolate oscuro, tocineta caramelizada y pecans. Esa mezcla de dulce y salado fue un “invento” para un bizcocho de cumpleaños para su mamá. Desde entonces, la receta se ha convertido en la preferida de sus clientes. Pero, ¿cómo se enteran de sus postres? Pues a través de recomendaciones y de las redes sociales, en donde los lunes sube su pódcast y enseña cómo preparar ricas recetas. Yira disfruta de enseñar a otros, interés que quizás comenzó cuando fue teaching assitant durante sus estudios en Johnson & Wales University. Antes de que termine el año quisiera tener un local en Dorado, en donde además de vender sus postres, pueda reclutar a estudiantes de la Escuela Hotelera de San Juan para enseñarles todo lo que ha aprendido como repostera independiente y como chef en importantes hoteles en el estado de Florida.

At the age of nine, and under the watchful eye of her grandmother, who was a pastry chef, Yira Martínez began her adventures in dessert-making. Her favorite? Chocolate cake with dark chocolate ganache, caramelized bacon, and pecans. That mixture of sweet and salty was a flash of inspiration for a birthday cake for her mother. Since then, the recipe has become a favorite of her customers, too. But how do they find out about her desserts? Through wordof-mouth (mmm!) and social networks, where on Mondays she does her podcast and teaches how to prepare delicious recipes. Yira enjoys teaching others—an interest that may have been triggered when she was a teaching assistant during her studies at Johnson & Wales University. Before the end of the year, she hopes to have a shop in Dorado, where in addition to selling her desserts, she can recruit students from the San Juan Hotel School to teach them everything she’s learned as an independent pastry chef and as a chef in important hotels in Florida.

“Transformar a las personas con su sazón”, esa es la meta de la repostera y chef personal, Jennifer Herrera. Al igual que su mamá y abuela, le llena ser la mejor anfitriona. Su línea de panes artesanales y repostería, La Condesa Figueroa, lleva el apellido de su abuela en homenaje a su familia; y el sustantivo “condesa”, lo añadió porque le confiere prestigio a los ingredientes y productos frescos cosechados en Puerto Rico. Antes de estudiar en The Culinary Institute of America y The French Culinary Institute, pensaba que solo los ingredientes ajenos a nuestra cultura tenían cabida en la cocina internacional. Pero, cuando trabajó en reconcidos restaurantes en Nueva York y América Latina vio cómo las frutas que su abuela Hilda cosechaba y usaba en su negocio de catering podían transformarse en arte y acompañantes de platos finos. “Transforming people with her zing”—that’s the goal of personal chef and pastry creator Jennifer Herrera. Like her mother and grandmother, she loves to be the “hostess with the mostest,” as the saying goes. Her line of artisanal breads and pastries, La Condesa Figueroa, takes the surname of her grandmother, in homage to her family, and “condesa,” because it adds a touch of prestige to the fresh ingredients and produce harvested in Puerto Rico. Before studying at The Culinary Institute of America and The French Culinary Institute, Jennifer thought that only ingredients foreign to our culture belonged in international cuisine. But when she worked in famed restaurants in New York and Latin America, she saw that the ingredients that her grandmother Hilda harvested and used in her catering business could be transformed into art, into the accompaniments to exquisite dishes. Today, the chef born and raised in New York divides her time between her roles as a mother, a wife, and the owner of a website for personalized menus and desserts made with produce harvested on the island, some even right here in Dorado.

El distintivo merengue que adorna los cupcakes confeccionados por Patricia Merino Amador es una receta de su abuela. “Desde los diez años la ayudaba por temporadas. Ella es famosa en Arecibo por su brazo gitano”, dice orgullosa. Patricia modificó un poco la receta a través de los años, y aunque no estudió para ser pastry chef sí aprendió en cursos especializados en decoración de postres. Desde hace siete años los vecinos de Dorado y pueblos cercanos visitan su boutique, en el centro comercial Mahi Mahi, para degustar sus cupcakes, bizcochos, galletas, brownies y tartitas, entre otras delicias. Todavía recuerda los primeros días en su tienda. “Mi esposo (el chef Carlos Rodríguez Hernández) y yo éramos superjóvenes. Trabajábamos junto a mi hermano y cuñada. Poco a poco, comenzamos a reclutar empleados. La realidad es que lo que somos hoy es por nuestro equipo de trabajo. Por ejemplo, una de las muchachas es la que prepara los croissants. Les hemos enseñado, pero ellos a nosotros también. Mi meta es tener un lugar más grande, y quizás más de un negocio, para llegar a más personas”, confiesa la egresada de Administración de Empresas de la Universidad Interamericana, Recinto Metropolitano.

The distinctive meringue that decorates the cupcakes made by Patricia Merino Amador is a recipe from her grandmother. “I started helping her when I was ten. She’s famous in Arecibo for her brazo gitano,” Patricia says proudly. Patricia has modified the recipe a little over the years, and although she didn’t study to become a pastry chef, she did take specialized courses in dessert decoration. For seven years now, the residents of Dorado and neighboring towns have been visiting her boutique in the Mahi Mahi Shopping Village to taste her cupcakes, cakes, cookies, brownies, and tartlets, among other mouth-watering pastries. She still remembers her first days in her shop. “My husband [chef Carlos Rodríguez Hernández] and I were super-young. We were working alongside my brother and sister-in-law. Little by little, we started to recruit employees. Honestly, what we are today is because of our team of employees. For example, one of the girls prepares the croissants. We’ve taught them, but they’ve taught us, too. My goal is to have a bigger place, and maybe more than one shop, to reach more people,” the graduate of the Universidad Interamericana, Metropolitan Campus, School of Business Administration confesses. doradobound

“El único modo de lograr lo imposible, es convenciéndose de que sí es posible”, dijo la pequeña Alicia en el libro más famoso de Lewis Carroll, Alicia en el país de las maravillas. Algo similar pensó Carolina Stubbe. Hace quince años, cuando llegó a Dorado Beach, lo vio como el canvas para idear un poblado en el que el arte fuese tan natural para sus habitantes como la tierra misma. “Estamos haciendo cosas que no pensábamos que podríamos hacer”, exclama la museóloga venezolana sobre lo que pasa con arte_FITS Foundation, la institución que originó junto al arquitecto Otto Reyes en el 2008, y que ha hecho de Dorado Beach la embajada del land art y el arte efímero en la isla. Y es que arte_FITS y Carolina comparten un mismo corazón, al punto que hablar de una o la otra resulta similar.

The only way to achieve the impossible is by believing that it is possible,” said Alice in Lewis Carroll’s most famous book, Alice in Wonderland. That’s pretty much what Carolina Stubbe thought, too, when, fifteen years ago, she arrived in Dorado Beach. She saw her new home as a canvas for creating a community where art was as natural for its residents as sun, rain, sand, and soil. “We’re doing things that we didn’t think we’d be able to do,” the Venezuelan museologist exclaims about what’s happening with the arte_FITS Foundation, the institution, founded with architect Otto Reyes in 2008, that has made Dorado Beach the center of land art and ephemeral art on the island. De la historia personal de amor de Carolina y cómo la trajo a Dorado se ha escrito bastante. De cómo su otra pasión, el arte, la ha llevado, además, a hacer historia lejos de su tierra, hay novedades que aún faltan por documentar. En estos años “los mejores trece de mi vida profesional”, como ella misma asevera, ha logrado más de lo imaginado por esa magnífica actitud suya a lo Alicia en Wonderland. “Pensé que podíamos intervenir afuera, a otra escala. ¿Dónde mejor que en Dorado Beach?”, rememora sobre aquella idea inicial de llevar a su entonces nuevo vecindario el land art, corriente del arte contemporáneo donde el paisaje y la obra de arte están estrechamente enlazados. A partir de entonces su labor no ha cesado. Aunque ha contado con la ayuda idónea de su esposo, Federico, y su empresa PRISA Group –que la ayudó a “construir” un poblado repleto de land art–, a Carolina no le han faltado retos. Tampoco ocasiones para superarlos. Luego de la recuperación del huracán María en el 2018, abrieron su Ephemeral_Open Air Museum y comprobaron cuán compenetrados están los residentes con las piezas de arte, aun cuando no sean piezas permanentes.

Quite a lot has been written about Carolina’s personal history of love and how that brought her to Dorado. But about the way her other passion, art, has led her to make history far from her native country—about that, there is still much to be told. In recent years—“the best thirteen years of my professional life,” as she herself says—she has achieved even more than that wonderful attitude so well described in Alice in Wonderland could have imagined. “I realized that we could do interventions outside, on another scale. Where better than in Dorado Beach?”, she recalls, speaking about that initial idea to bring land art, a genre of contemporary art in which the landscape and the artwork are closely intertwined, to her new neighborhood. Since then, her work has not ceased. Although she’s had the close support of her husband, Federico, and his business PRISA Group— which helped her “build” a community filled with land art—there have been no lack of challenges for Carolina. Or occasions to overcome them. After the recovery from Hurricane Maria in 2018, they opened their Ephemeral_Open Air Museum and saw how very closely artworks touched the hearts of the town’s residents, even though the pieces weren’t permanent. doradobound

También la pandemia le trajo importantes enseñanzas. “Nada nos detiene. A nosotros nos ha servido de reflexión. Tenemos más trabajo que nunca; la madurez de los golpes reales nos da esa fuerza. Nada nos detiene”, advierte la egresada de la Universidad Central de Venezuela. El capítulo que sigue en esta historia incluye la próxima edición del Art in Golf Triennal y un joint venture con Miami que ella confía colocará a Puerto Rico en el Main Land del arte contemporáneo internacional. “Buscamos que Miami anuncie que Puerto Rico le está abriendo sus puertas al arte. Mi política es el arte, y como política trato de promover a nuestros artistas”, asevera la guapa mujer, quien agradece que en este viaje vital ha logrado mucho y se ha divertido en cantidad en el proceso.

The pandemic, too, taught important lessons. “Nothing stops us. [The pandemic] has allowed us to reflect. We have more work than ever; the maturity of those real blows gives us that strength. Nothing stops us,” says the graduate of the Universidad Central de Venezuela. The next chapter in this story includes the upcoming edition of the Art in Golf Triennial and a joint venture in Miami that she believes will put Puerto Rico on the map of the “mainland” of international contemporary art. “We’re attempting to persuade Miami to announce that Puerto Rico is opening its doors to art. My politics is art, and as a policy, I try to promote our artists,” says the lovely art entrepreneur, who is grateful that in this life-journey she’s been able to achieve so much and has had so much fun in the process.

El ingenioso hidalgo don Quijote de la Mancha, de Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra… yo sé, yo sé… tal vez no la leíste completa en escuela superior. A lo mejor, ni la abriste. No te voy a juzgar porque es una lectura sumamente pesada para esa edad. Sin embargo, El Quijote tiene de todo, desde canciones, cuentos y leyendas, hasta enseñanzas que perduran hoy y que con tu presente madurez disfrutarás.

Don Quixote de la Mancha, by Miguel de Cervantes. . . I know, I know. . . but maybe you didn’t finish it the first time. Or maybe you’ve never even opened it. I won’t judge you, because it’s a heavy read if you tried it in high school or college. But Don Quixote has a little of everything—songs, stories and legends, and especially lessons that are still relevant today—lessons and stories which, now that you’re mature, you’re sure to enjoy.

CAPITULACIONES MATRIMONIALES ¿Una buena decisión? Por Yomara A. Román Serrano

Cuando dos personas contraen matrimonio en Puerto Rico, además de unirse mediante un vínculo de afinidad, unen sus patrimonios. Esta unión patrimonial se llama sociedad legal de gananciales. Esto quiere decir que todos los ingresos que devenguen los cónyuges, así como todas las deudas que contraigan pertenecerán a ambos por igual, independientemente de quién los haya generado. Sin embargo, los contrayentes pueden elegir otro destino para su patrimonio, mediante la selección de otro régimen económico y estableciendo ciertas reglas para su funcionamiento. Pueden elegir, por ejemplo, la separación total de bienes o la comunidad de bienes. Este proceso se hace a través de un abogado notario quien realizará una escritura pública. Actualmente, por medio de la Ley Número 62 del 27 de enero de 2018, las capitulaciones matrimoniales se pueden hacer antes o después de haber contraído matrimonio. Esto quiere decir que si al momento de unirse los contrayentes desconocían o no estaban seguros de qué régimen económico operará en su matrimonio, tienen una oportunidad adicional para rechazar la sociedad legal de gananciales y escoger otra opción.

When two people marry in Puerto Rico, in addition to joining hands in a bond of love, they join their assets. These combined assets are then called “community property,” or property held “in common.” That means that all the income earned by the couple, and all the debts they may contract, will belong to them both equally, regardless of which partner generates them. However, the couple may choose another route for their assets, another financial arrangement, by establishing certain rules for the way their assets are handled. They may, for example, choose to keep their assets completely separate. This process is handled by an attorney authorized to be a notary in Puerto Rico, who will draw up a public document. Currently, Law 62 of January 27, 2018, states that marital agreements may be made before or after marriage. That means that if at the time of the marriage ceremony, the two parties are unaware of the possibility of keeping their assets separate or are not sure which arrangement they want to follow, they have an opportunity later to reject the community property arrangement and choose another option.

Entre los motivos para rechazar la sociedad legal de gananciales, está el preservar para cada cual sus ingresos, no adquirir responsabilidad por las deudas que genere el otro cónyuge o protegerse de posibles demandas de cobro de dinero, daños y perjuicios u otras reclamaciones. Otra ventaja de las capitulaciones matrimoniales es que, llegado el momento de disolver el matrimonio, ya sea por muerte o separación, evitamos largos y tediosos procesos para liquidar la sociedad legal de gananciales, agilizando trámites y reduciendo gastos y/o procesos en los tribunales. Por otro lado, la ventaja que nos trajo la Ley Número 62-2018 es que las capitulaciones matrimoniales se pueden modificar o dejar sin efecto con el paso del tiempo. Esto es un cambio importante, ya que provee oportunidad para que las partes puedan evaluar su funcionalidad y realizar los ajustes necesarios para el beneficio de ambos. Among the reasons for not wishing to put one’s assets into a community property arrangement is to preserve each partner’s own income, not take on the responsibility of the other partner’s debts, and to protect oneself from possible lawsuits for debt collection, third-party injury and other liability, and so on. Another advantage of marital agreements is that if the moment should come when the marriage is dissolved, whether by divorce or death, the partner or partners will avoid the long, tedious processes involved in liquidating the community property, thereby making things go more smoothly, lowering legal and other costs, and avoiding court hearings. A new possibility offered by Law 62-2018 is that marital agreements can be modified or annulled. This is an important change since it provides the opportunity for the partners to evaluate how well the agreement works for them and make any necessary changes for their mutual or individual benefit. Finally, marital agreements avoid the risk of compromising both partners’ incomes. That is, the agreement can be considered a strategy for protecting the family and its assets. Turkish designer Cuneyt Akdolu presented the latest pieces in his ARA line recently at Pirilo Restaurant in Dorado. Akdolu uses 24 karat gold, oxidized silver, beautiful gemstones such as sapphires, emeralds, and opals, and diamonds in the creation of his original designs. The premiere of the film version of In the Heights, by playwright/musician/actor Lin-Manuel Miranda, took place at the Dorado Drive-In Cinema with Lin-Manuel himself and his family in attendance. And Dorado Bound was there! Those who came to enjoy the movie were thanked by the multi-talented Miranda, who also saw it for the first time in a drive-in format. It was a magical night, produced by our friend and Dorado resident Ender Vega, who produced Lin-Manuel’s other mega-hit, Hamilton, in Puerto Rico in 2019 and who will present the stage production of In the Heights at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico in September.
