EL BANQUITO DE ROCKEFELLER Hecho de concreto y decorado con piedras lisas, el conocido “banquito de Rockefeller” ha sido testigo de proposiciones matrimoniales y hermosos atardeceres. El asiento, colocado en un lugar privilegiado entre rocas inmensas, aparenta estar solitario, pero lo acompaña el ancho mar del Norte.

Made of concrete and decorated with smooth stones, the “Rockefeller bench” has been witness to marriage proposals and beautiful sunsets. Set in a privileged spot among immense boulders, it appears to be solitary, but it’s accompanied always by the wide northern sea.

Estaba en escuela superior cuando ya se colaba desde la playa al campo de golf del hotel Dorado Beach. Como otros jovencitos de la zona, trabajaba como caddie. “En el hotel ponían que éramos escolares. Lo que no sabían era que yo cortaba clases”, rememora Adalberto Maldonado Romero, conocido por todos como Bejuco, “Porque era bien flaco y me decían ‘Bejuquito, ven acá’”. Para el 1964 el hotel eliminó el puesto de caddie. “Ahí me fui yo. Dieron una liquidación. Me tocaron $648. Con eso mi papá hizo la casa en cemento”, recuerda Bejuco. Cuando se graduó de escuela superior regresó al hotel a buscar trabajo. A los dieciocho años empezó como lavaplatos, luego fue busboy y mozo. Un día, un mensajero tomó sus días de vacaciones y la administración le pidió que lo sustituyera porque le tenían confianza. El hotel pasó por varias reestructuraciones, pero deseaban que él permaneciera como empleado. En el 1976 le ofrecieron regresar a ese trabajo que tuvo de muchachito: caddie. Hoy, a sus setenta años, y tras más de cinco décadas de trabajo, sigue asistiendo a los jugadores en el campo de golf del Dorado Beach, y ni piensa en el retiro. Los turistas llegan y, sin conocerlo, lo procuran porque otros jugadores lo refieren. 24

He was in high school when he first sneaked in off the beach and onto the golf course of the Dorado Beach Hotel. Like other youngsters in the area, he worked as a caddie. “In the hotel, they said we were students. What they didn’t know was that I cut classes,” recalls Adalberto Maldonado Romero, known by all as Bejuco—“you know, ‘vine,’ because I was really skinny. People would say, ‘Bejuco, come over here.’” In 1964, the hotel eliminated the position of caddie. “So that was it for me. We were paid. I got $648. With that, my father built our house, a cement house,” Bejuco recalls. When he graduated from high school, he went back to the hotel to look for work. At eighteen he started out as a dishwasher, then moved up to busboy and then waiter. One day, a messenger took his vacation and the management, who knew and trusted him, asked him to step in for the messenger. The hotel went through several restructurings, but they always wanted him to stay on. In 1976, they offered him the job he started out with in his high school years: caddie. Today, at seventy, and after more than fifty years on the job, he’s still caddying for golfers on the Dorado Beach course, and he’s not even thinking about retiring. The tourists come in and, without even meeting him, ask for Bejuco by name because other golfers have recommended him.

“Soy fiel al hotel”, dice mientras se le entrecorta la voz. Hace una pausa… y otra más. “Perdona… me acuerdo de muchas cosas. Me gusta cómo me tratan. Gracias a mi trabajo en el hotel saqué a mis cuatro hijos adelante, pudieron ir a la universidad y hoy tienen sus trabajos”, comenta emocionado. “He conocido a muchos presidentes de compañías, abogados, doctores e ingenieros. Cuando llegan, preguntan, ‘¿Dónde está Bejuco?’. Conocí a Sammy Davis Jr., a Will Smith, a muchos peloteros y a Oscar de la Hoya —quien es mi pana, a donde quiera que va me llama—. Una vez vi al expresidente Donald Trump cuando fui a ‘caddear’ en una actividad en Coco Beach. Ese día habló conmigo como si me conociera”, recuerda. Desde hace cuatro años es legislador municipal en Dorado y hasta ha pensado en aspirar para el puesto de alcalde por el Partido Nuevo Progresista (PNP). “Así lo haré el próximo cuatrienio, siempre y cuando Andrés Waldemar Volmar Méndez (excandidato a la alcaldía por el PNP) decida no aspirar, porque no voy a traicionar a un compañero”, comenta con seriedad. Cuando no está en el campo de golf, o desarrollando legislación, dedica su tiempo a su familia y a su esposa Gloria Esther Bruno Meléndez, con quien lleva cuarenta años de casado. “Nos gusta vacacionar en Ponce, ir a la casa de un amigo en Luquillo. Disfruto también ayudar al que lo necesite”, concluye.

“I’m loyal to the hotel,” he says, his voice breaking. He pauses. . . and then pauses a little longer. “Sorry. . . I remember so many things. I like the way they treat me. Thanks to my job at the hotel, I’ve educated my four children, given them a start—they were able to go to the university and today they all have jobs,” he says emotionally. “I’ve met a lot of presidents of corporations, lawyers, doctors, engineers. . . . When they come in, they ask, ‘Where’s Bejuco?’ I knew Sammy Davis, Jr., Will Smith, lots of baseball players, and Oscar de la Hoya—who’s my buddy; wherever he goes, he calls me. Once, I saw ex-president Donald Trump when I went to caddy for an activity at Coco Beach. That day, he talked to me like he knew me,” he recalls. For the last four years, Bejuco has been a member of the legislative assembly in Dorado, and he’s even thought about running for mayor for the New Progressive Party (PNP). “And I will, next election, as long as Andrés Waldemar Volmar Méndez [the former candidate for mayor for the PNP] decides not to run, because I’m not going to betray a colleague,” he says, his expression serious. When he’s not on the golf course, or drafting legislation, he devotes his time to his family and his wife, Gloria Esther Bruno Meléndez, to whom he’s been married for forty years. “We like to vacation in Ponce, go to a friend’s house in Luquillo. I also like helping out those who need it,” he concludes.

Las montañas emanan una paz que arropa los sentidos. En sus topes aguardan montes luminosos, cascadas y vistas panorámicas espectaculares, espacios idóneos para aventurarnos a hacer una expedición de hiking o senderismo, una actividad accesible para todos, puesto que puede realizarse a cualquier edad, en cualquier momento del año y sobre cualquier terreno. Agraciadamente, la topografía de la Isla del Encanto cuenta con innumerables caminos para descubrir, ya sea con un grupo especializado en este tipo de turismo, o con tu espíritu aventurero como guía. A continuación, te presentamos tres opciones de senderismo en Puerto Rico para el disfrute de todos. Mountains emanate a peace that envelops the senses. They possess waterfalls, luminous clearings, and spectacular panoramic vistas, ideal spaces for an adventure—a hiking expedition, for example, an activity accessible to almost everyone, since you can hike at any age, any time of year (in Puerto Rico, at least), and on any terrain. Fortunately, the Island of Enchantment’s topography provides countless trails to discover, whether with a group specializing in this type of tourism or on your own, with just your spirit of adventure as your guide. We present three options for hiking trails in Puerto Rico that can be enjoyed by everyone. 30

El Bosque Nacional El Yunque, en Río Grande

El Yunque tiene varias opciones para una caminata. Es el bosque más popular de la isla y el único tropical que forma parte del Sistema de Parques Nacionales de los Estados Unidos. Si te aventuras por el sendero El Yunque podrás observar la hermosa vista en la cima de este bosque lluvioso con una elevación de casi 3,500 pies. El sendero El Yunque tiene una clasificación de dificultad moderada. Si no deseas hacer una caminata larga, puedes optar por el sendero Monte Britton o descubrir el de Los Picachos, Caimatillo o La Roca. Cualquiera que escojas te llevará por arroyos y veredas hermosas. Verás plantas como helechos y bromelias, así como las famosas cascadas. También podrás escuchar diferentes tipos de aves, insectos y el coquí. Para reservaciones accede a: fs.usda.gov El Yunque offers several options for a hike. It’s the most popular forest in Puerto Rico, and the only tropical park in the U.S. National Park Service system. If you choose the El Yunque trail, you’ll be able to observe the beautiful view from the very summit of this rain forest, at an elevation of almost 3,500 feet. The El Yunque trail is classified as moderately difficult. If you’re not looking for a long hike, you can opt for the Mount Britton trail or discover the Los Picachos, Caimatillo, or La Roca trails. Whichever one you choose will lead you along arroyos and beautiful green paths where you’ll see gorgeous plants like ferns and bromeliads, and of course the forest’s beautiful waterfalls. Monte Guilarte, en Adjuntas El Bosque de Guilarte es una hermosa zona, ubicada en lo alto de las montañas de Adjuntas. Hay una ruta de senderismo hasta la cima, denominada Pico Guilarte, el quinto punto más alto de Puerto Rico. Debes considerar que se trata de una gran cadena montañosa y que por lo general hay mucha nubosidad en el bosque. Esto no es un inconveniente, siempre y cuando estés preparado para ello. A menudo hay mucho barro y es resbaladizo, así que el calzado apropiado es primordial. Este bosque no es de los más populares de Puerto Rico, pero la vista de la cima es impresionante. A lo largo del camino podrás disfrutar de cascadas, piscinas naturales y un puente colgante. Puedes combinar el hiking con un chapuzón en el charco El Mango. The Guilarte Forest is a beautiful area located high in the mountains near the town of Adjuntas. There is a hiking trail that leads to the peak, called Guilarte Peak, the fifth-highest peak in Puerto Rico. You should take note that you’ll be in the cordillera, a long mountain range where there’s almost always lots of fog. This is not necessarily a drawback, however, so long as you’re prepared for it. There’s often mud, which is slippery, so appropriate hiking footwear is essential. This is not one of the most popular forests on the island, but the view from the top of the mountain is truly impressive. Along the trail you’ll see waterfalls, natural pools, and a suspension bridge. You can combine your hike with a dip in a lovely pool known as El Mango.

Bosque Estatal de Guánica, en Guánica Si te interesa la naturaleza y no te incomoda la compañía constante del “rubio” del sur de Puerto Rico, el Bosque Estatal de Guánica es una Reserva de la Biosfera de las Naciones Unidas. El camino es de roca, piedra y tierra, y cuenta con doce senderos diferentes con diferentes grados de dificultad. Uno de los más populares es el más largo, de unas seis millas, pero la recompensa es un fuerte histórico conocido como Fuerte Caprón desde donde se puede admirar una vista fantástica de la bahía de Guánica. Si no estás inclinado a esa distancia, hay otras opciones más cortas como el sendero Ballena o el sendero Cueva. Este bosque es lo opuesto a El Yunque, así que es un atractivo realizar estas dos visitas para darte cuenta de lo increíble y variado que es la topografía, el clima y la naturaleza de Puerto Rico. If you’re interested in nature and you don’t mind the constant company of the blazing sun of southern Puerto Rico, the Guánica State Forest is a United Nations-designated Biosphere Reserve. The trails are of rock, stone, and dirt, and there are twelve different routes of different degrees of difficulty. One of the most popular is also the longest—six miles in length—but the payback is a historic fort known as Fort Capron, from which you’ll have a fantastic view of Guánica Bay. If you’re not ready for that distance, there are shorter options, like the Ballena or Cueva trails. This forest is the opposite of El Yunque—dry and rocky instead of wet and plantfilled—so it’s interesting to visit both forests to see how varied and incredible Puerto Rico’s topography, climate, and natural beauties are.

Tres mil años antes de Cristo, cuando los arcaicos poblaban nuestra isla, el oso perezoso antillano campeaba por su respeto quizás por donde tú vives. Era del tamaño de un perro. Aparte del oso y la jutía gigante —una especie de roedor— no había mucha proteína disponible para alimentarse, así es que esos primeros residentes comenzaron a pulular por las cuevas de la zona kársica. Lo sabemos gracias a las investigaciones y al uso de la técnica de carbono-14, del arqueólogo Reniel Rodríguez, profesor de la Universidad de Puerto Rico, y su equipo, cuyos hallazgos reseñó El Nuevo Día. También se encontró evidencia de arte rupestre realizado por los igneris entre los años 700 y 400 antes de Cristo, como la pictografía de dos caras con forma triangular. Esa huella sobrevivió el tiempo, los huracanes y los terremotos, quizás porque aún no hemos entrado a las cuevas para alterarlas, olvidando alguna botella plástica como souvenir o con la luz de nuestros selfies. 38

In 3000 B.C., at the time archaic people settled our island, the Antillean sloth had a free run of the forests, perhaps right where you’re living now. It was the size of a dog. Besides the sloth and the giant jutía, a large rodent, there was not a lot of protein for the settlers to eat, so they began to scatter through the caves in the island’s Karst country. We know this thanks to the investigations (and carbon-14 dating) by archaeologist Reniel Rodríguez, University of Puerto Rico professor, and his team, whose finds have been written about in El Nuevo Día. Evidence has also been found of rock art done by the Igneris people between 700 B.C. and 400 B.C., like the pictograph of two triangle-shaped faces. That drawing survived time, hurricanes, and earthquakes, perhaps because we never entered the caves to alter them, left behind a plastic water bottle as a souvenir, or illuminated them with the flashes of our cameras when we took our selfies.

Si encuentran un descolorido bikini, ¿lo confundirán con ropa interior? Temo pensar en la huella que dejarán tantos objetos sin uso que acumulamos. ¿Encontrarán un Rubik’s Cube? Yo me adelantaré. En el tronco de una ceiba bebé, rayaré un sincero mensaje con la afilada punta de un cuchillo. “Éramos igual que tú. / P.R. 2021”.

What traces will we leave the Puerto Ricans of the year 5021? Technology will have reached unimaginable levels of development, no doubt, but I think what we can touch right now, with our own hands, is what will last. Our bones and the bones of our animals will speak to them of our biologies. The gold-capped teeth of some rap artists will confuse them. And what about our drawings and writings? That’s another story. If the spray paint of today’s urban art survives the rain, sun, salt air, and morning dew, it would be a true miracle, and it would tell of our dreams and rage. It will take a bit more work to figure out the graffiti. Will the people of the future read our legal documents to find out what sorts of things governed the ways we lived together and what triggered our disputes? Will some random sheet of newsprint be around to explain why our feet moved when we heard a catchy rhythm? If they find a faded bikini, will they confuse it with underwear? I fear to think of the mark left by all the unused stuff we accumulate. Will they find a Rubik’s Cube? I think I’ll steal a march on the rest of you. On the trunk of a baby ceiba tree, I’ll carve a sincere message with the sharp blade of a knife: “We were just like you. / P.R. 2021.”

Los aceites esenciales son maravillas que vienen en frascos pequeños, la cuestión está en saber cuándo, dónde y cómo usarlos correctamente. Explica la aromaterapista clínica, Francelliz Nin-Perea, que estos aceites son compuestos aromáticos naturales que se encuentran en las semillas, la corteza, tallos, raíces, flores y otras partes de las plantas. Su utilidad varía según su procedencia, pero hay algunos que siempre se deberían tener en casa. They can heal, calm, beautify, and brighten our lives. And those are only a few of their benefits. Essential oils are wondrous things that come in little bottles. The question is knowing when, where, and how to use them correctly. Clinical aromatherapist Francelliz Nin-Perea explains that essential oils are natural aromatic compounds that are found in the seeds, stalks, roots, flowers, and other parts of plants. Their usefulness varies, depending on what part of the plant they come from, but there are some you should always have in the house.

Francelliz mentions lavender, the tea tree, and frankincense as that trio of fundamental oils, all of which are antibacterial, antiseptic, and antifungal. Of them, lavender is the “universal oil,” she says. Diluted in olive, coconut, or avocado oil, it’s excellent for rashes on babies or your puppy’s itchy skin. Undiluted, it can be inhaled, even directly from the vial, to calm anxiety.

La rosa, por ejemplo, ayuda a reducir el enrojecimiento. El geranio produce un sentido de balance y ayuda a regular el estrés. El Ylang-ylang es calmante y hasta los bebés lo pueden usar. El olíbano es antiinflamatorio y, la lavanda, además de calmar, es cicatrizante. “Es importante recalcar que todos los aceites tienen sus porcentajes de dilución recomendados, ya que algunos son hasta fotosensibles y pueden manchar la piel si se expone a la luz con ellos aplicados”, exhorta la joven empresaria para añadir que lo ideal es buscar el consejo de un experto para utilizarlos.

Stay on the safe side Because they are pure substances, and even volatile, some oils, if used directly on the skin, may irritate it. How can we use them safely? Francelliz points out several ways. Some oils, like mint, which is recommended for pain, should be used in compresses: Boil some water, add a few drops of oil, and soak a cloth to put on the affected area. Others, like lavender, can be used “straight,” but in inhalant devices. Other ways of using them is by adding them to holistic products like creams, exfoliants, or even in fragrance-free beauty products that we might already have in the house.

Beauty and aroma Karen Albors, creator of the natural beauty line Sauca Botanicals, says that there are oils recognized for their high levels of calming, healing, and anti-inflammatory properties, which she incorporates into her products. Rose oil, for example, helps reduce redness of the skin. Geranium oil produces a sense of balance and helps regulate stress. Ylang-ylang oil (from the Cananga odorata) has a calming effect and even babies can use it. Frankincense is anti-inflammatory, and lavender not only is calming but also helps healing. “It’s important to stress that each oil has its own recommended percentage of dilution, since some are photosensitive and can discolor your skin if you expose your skin to the sun and the oil applied,” says the young businesswoman, adding that ideally, you should seek the advice of someone familiar with oils and their uses before you apply them.

A pesar de que en nuestra isla gozamos de un eterno verano, es durante esta época del año cuando más ponemos en agenda actividades al aire libre. Las salidas en bote, las fiestas en la piscina, los juegos de tenis y las largas caminatas, son algunas de ellas. Y en todas, el sol es nuestro fiel guardián. Aunque es rico sentir su “caricia”, esta también puede ser dañina, en especial para la piel. Es por esto que le consultamos a la doctora en dermatología, Michelle Collazo, algunas inquietudes, y la especialista, con práctica privada en el MMC Professional Plaza, en Manatí, nos ofrece las siguientes respuestas: Although in Puerto Rico we enjoy an endless summer, the time of year we’re in now is when most of our outdoor activities take place. Getting out on the boat, having pool parties, playing tennis, taking long walks — those are just some of the activities we engage in these days. And in all of them, the sun is a constant companion. Although it’s wonderful to feel the sun’s caress, it can also be harmful, especially for our skin. That’s why we consulted dermatologist Michelle Collazo about some of our cocerns, and Dr. Collazo, with a private practice in MMC Professional Plaza in Manatí, had the following answers to our questions:

¿Cuál es la diferencia entre bloqueador y protector solar? Bloqueador solar o sunblock fue el nombre que se usó por muchos años para describir las cremas que nos protegen contra los rayos ultravioleta. Sin embargo, dado que ninguna crema puede bloquear el 100% de los rayos ultravioleta (UV), y la palabra podía confundir al público, la Administración de Alimentos y Medicamentos de los Estados Unidos (FDA, por sus siglas en inglés) prohibió el uso del término en el 2012 y ahora los manufactureros solo pueden utilizar el término filtro solar o sunscreen. ¿Cuáles son los ingredientes que siempre debemos buscar en un filtro solar o sunscreen? Debemos buscar los ingredientes que sean de amplio espectro o broad spectrum. Estos protegen tanto contra los rayos UVB y los UVA. En adición, si tenemos una piel sensitiva debemos enfocarnos en los filtros solares físicos, como lo son el óxido de cinc o zinc oxide, y el dióxido de titanio o titanium dioxide, que causan menos irritación a la piel y se ha demostrado que son de menos absorción. ¿Cómo puedo ir a la playa o la piscina y hacer actividades al aire libre sin que mi piel se maltrate tanto? Podemos divertirnos al aire libre, pero siempre debemos proteger nuestra piel. Busca la sombra cuando sea posible, evita las horas del mediodía, usa ropa encubridora, utiliza sombrero, aplica el filtro solar y aplícalo de nuevo cada dos horas (pero si sudas o te mojas, debes hacerlo cada cuarenta minutos). ¿Cuán seguras son las cremas bronceadoras o self-tanners? Estas son lociones con aditivos de color que no requieren exposición solar, por lo que no son un riesgo para tu piel y se pueden utilizar siempre y cuando no se inhale ni se apliquen en la mucosa (nariz, ojos o labios). La mayoría de los self-tanners contienen un aditivo de color llamado DHA (dihydroxyacetone). Lo que va a variar entre las diferentes marcas es la cantidad de este ingrediente. Se recomienda usar uno que diga gradual tanner, ya que, al tener menor cantidad de este ingrediente, obtendrás un color más parejo y sin vetas. Es importante recalcar que la mayoría de estas lociones no contienen filtro solar, por lo que debes utilizar uno al exponerte al sol. Un poquito de sol, ¿se puede? El daño solar es acumulativo a través de los años, por lo que exponerse a los rayos del sol no es positivo, en ningún caso. Debemos proteger siempre nuestra piel para evitar a largo plazo las manchas, las arrugas y el cáncer de piel. ¡No hay nada más bonito que la piel en su color natural; esa es la moda que todos debemos llevar!

What’s the difference between sunblock and a sunscreen? “Sunblock” was the word used for many years for the creams and lotions that protect us against ultraviolet (UV) rays. But since no cream can block 100% of UV rays, and the word might be confusing to the public, in 2012, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) prohibited the use of the term, and now manufacturers can only use the term “sunscreen.” What are the ingredients that we should always look for in a sunscreen? We should look for “broad spectrum” ingredients, which protect against both UVA and UVB rays. In addition, if we have sensitive skin, we should focus on physical sun filters like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, which cause less skin irritation than some other ingredients and have shown not to be absorbed as much by the skin. How can I go to the beach or the pool and enjoy outdoor activities without mistreating my skin? We can have fun outdoors, but we should always protect our skin. Try to stay in the shade whenever possible, avoid being outdoors in the middle of the day, wear clothing with good coverage, wear a hat, apply sunscreen, and reapply it every two hours— but if you perspire or get wet, apply it every forty minutes. How safe are self-tanning creams and lotions? These are creams with color additives that don’t require you to expose yourself to the sun, so they aren’t a risk to your skin and can be used as long as they’re not inhaled or applied to mucus membranes like the nose, eyes, or lips. Most self-tanners contain a color additive called DHA (dihydroxyacetone). What varies from one brand to another is the amount of this ingredient. De acuerdo con los psicólogos, conmemorar los cumpleaños y otros hitos (como las graduaciones) ayuda a los niños a sentirse conectados. Es por esto que siempre debemos tratar de agasajarlos, aunque sea de una manera sencilla. En busca de inspiración para celebrarle los cuatro añitos a mi hijo, he visto que los padres han regresado a las fiestas de antaño. Dice el escritor, filósofo y vlogger suizo, Alain de Botton, que, si somos lo que comemos, también somos lo que habitamos, y que la felicidad en casa depende de nuestra destreza para casar lo que es con lo que debería ser. ¿Cómo diseñar una casa para ser feliz en ella? Te decimos. Una interesada en lograr que los interiores de un hogar tengan efectos positivos en el ánimo y la conducta de sus habitantes es la joven diseñadora Carolina Bennazar. Más aún cuando hace apenas unos meses utilizó esa filosofía para diseñar la habitación de su nueva bebita. En ese proyecto del corazón, así como los que hace para sus clientes, esta egresada de Syracuse University tiene su propia fórmula para un happy home. Carolina asegura que hay que diseñar para el feeling y halagar los sentidos. Todos ellos. Ella deja entrar la naturaleza al interior con plantas y aprovecha las ventanas y las puertas para que se cuelen la luz, el fresco y el color. De ahí juega con la iluminación. “Con la natural y la artificial, para crear estados de ánimo”, dice sobre incorporar reguladores para efectos tenues o lámparas de mesa para luz directa. How can we design a house to be happy in it? We’ve got some ideas. . . Young designer Carolina Bennazar is committed to ensuring that a home’s interiors have a positive effect on its residents’ moods and behavior. Just a few months ago, she used that philosophy to design a room for her new baby girl. In that project so close to her heart, just as in projects for her clients, Carolina, a graduate of Syracuse University, applied her own special formula for a happy home. Carolina insists that you have to design for the “feeling” and appeal to the senses. All the senses. She allows nature to enter her rooms with plants, and she takes advantage of windows and doors for light, breezes, and color. She loves to play with lighting. “Both natural and artificial,” she says, “to create moods.” She uses dimmers to create soft effects and table lamps for direct light. A chair is a fundamental piece in interior design, and you should know how to choose one and put it in the right place. At one moment in history, chairs were thrones and symbols of authority. Sobre cómo usarlas eficazmente para ambos propósitos, Sylvia apunta un par de ejemplos: “Si tienes un baño amplio, blanco, opta por incluir una pieza que añada calidez y comodidad, como una silla estilo savonarola, plegable y hecha en tablas de madera. La puedes cerrar o dejar abierta, según necesites. Y para un walk-in closet grande, elige una silla cómoda, que a la vez se vea como un statement”, menciona. Una estrategia de diseño es que al incorporar una silla en la sala trates de que “converse” con las sillas del comedor, ya sea a través del color o del material que esté hecha. Otra táctica es que esa silla de la sala sea LA pieza de conversación y provoque el efecto wao en el espacio, justamente por un color de impacto o un diseño fuera de lo común.

Sylvia offers a couple of examples of ways to use chairs effectively for both purposes. “If you have a large white bathroom, include a piece that adds warmth and convenience, like a Savonarolastyle chair, a folding chair made of crisscrossing slats of wood that form an X. You can fold it up or leave it open, as needed. And for a large walk-in closet, choose a comfortable chair that also acts as a statement piece,” she suggests. One design strategy is that when you introduce a chair into your living room, try to ensure that it “converses” with your dining room chairs, whether in terms of color or the material they’re made from. Another tactic is to choose a living room chair that’ll be THE conversation piece, creating a Wow! effect in the room, either because of its impactful color or its unusual design.

Cuando hablamos de té pensamos en una taza floreada colocada encima de una mesa hermosamente decorada con emparedados ligeros y tartas dulces. Y no estamos muy lejos de la verdad. A principios del siglo XIX, en Inglaterra, la duquesa de Bedford invitaba a sus amigos a tomar esta milenaria bebida antes de la cena. Fue ella quien puso en boga la famosa “hora del té ”. Sin embargo, mucho antes de haberse popularizado en esa parte de Europa, esta bebida ya era conocida durante el siglo III, d. C., en China, gracias a que los comerciantes de la época y las rutas asiáticas propagaban sus beneficios para la salud. En la actualidad, el té es mucho más que un evento social. Este se puede beber a cualquier hora del día, en coctelería, frío o caliente, y los sabores y las mezclas son infinitas, además de que provee múltiples beneficios para la salud. “El té es la bebida milenaria más popular del mundo, después del agua”, explica Alondra Debrasilia, dueña del tea shop, Alou Thé, en Mayagüez. “Se le denomina té a la infusión de las hojas y brotes del árbol Camellia sinensis. Todos los tipos de té provienen del mismo árbol, diferenciados por el procedimiento de elaboración de cada uno. Las variedades principales provenientes de dicho árbol son el té blanco, el verde, el oolong y el negro”, añade la experta, que posee grados de sommelier del té y de tea blender.

When we talk about tea, we think about a flowery tea cup and saucer on a table beautifully laid out with finger sandwiches and petit fours. And that’s not too far from the truth. In England, in the early nineteenth century, the Duchess of Bedford would invite her friends to drink this centuries-old infusion before dinner. It was the Duchess who brought “afternoon tea” into fashion. Yet long before becoming popular in England, tea had been drunk in China—as early as the third century BCE, in fact. Merchants of the time and the Asian trade routes spread the news of tea’s benefits for one’s health. Today, tea is much more than a social event. It can be drunk at any hour of the day, in cocktails, cold or hot, and the flavors and blends are infinite. Not to mention that it does, indeed, offer many health benefits. “Tea is the most popular ages-old drink in the world, after water,” says Alondra Debrasilia, owner of Alou Thé, a tea shop in Mayagüez. “We give the name ‘tea’ to the infusion of leaves and buds of the tea plant, Camellia sinensis. All the many types of tea come from the same plant; the difference is in the way each one is processed. The main varieties that come from that plant are white tea, green tea, oolong, and black tea,” adds Alondra, who has degrees as a tea sommelier and a tea blender.

While Alondra was traveling the world during her graduate studies, she discovered tea’s many health benefits and its diversity of possibilities. GINGER BLACK BEER TEA Receta: El Ginger Beer Black Tea se puede hacer frío o caliente. Este crea una espuma parecida a la de la cerveza, de ahí se deriva el nombre. Puedes acompañarlo de trufas rellenas de frutas o cítricas. Ingredientes: 2 cdas. Ginger Beer Black Tea de @alouthepr (Té negro, jengibre, manzana, piña, azafrán y esencia natural) 6oz de agua hirviendo o 212F (infusión 5 minutos) 1 shot de licor de naranja 1 cda. de sirope de jengibre Preparación: En una coctelera de hielo grande poner el Ginger Beer Black Tea ya preparado, añadir el shot de licor de naranja y el sirope de jengibre. Menear los ingredientes en la coctelera por 30 segundos o hasta que haga espuma. Servir en una copa de Martini. Decorar con una rodaja de naranja deshidratada.

As Western art has traditionally been categorized, sewing and embroidering have been seen as “women’s work,” outside the boundaries of “high art.” They were tasks ordinarily undertaken for domestic, family, or decorative uses. Today, artists like Elsa M. For months, the pandemic prevented us from going to museums. Now, with a more hopeful outlook, it’s time to give a lift to our spirits by returning to the scene of the arts in Puerto Rico! Pocas cosas dicen vacaciones como sentarse frente al mar y leer. Tal vez lo acompañas con un vino o un trago tropical con todo y sombrilla de papel. Como dicen: eso es vida. Si buscas en el internet libros para leer frente al mar o cuando vas de vacaciones, verás que se repiten ciertos títulos, como El viejo y el mar, de Hemingway o El señor de las moscas, de William Golding, por eso de mencionar tan solo dos. Así que me di a la tarea de escoger cinco libros que no aparecerán en esas listas, para ofrecerte otras alternativas. He aquí mi escogido.

Few things say vacation like sitting on the beach and reading. Maybe you accompany the book with a glass of wine or a tropical drink, umbrella and all. Like they say: That’s the life! If you’re on the internet looking for books to read on the beach or when you go on vacation, you’ll probably find that certain titles keep coming up, like The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway, or The Lord of the Flies by William Golding, to mention just two. So, to provide a few alternatives, I decided to choose five books that won’t appear on those lists. Here are my suggestions.

And Then There Were None, de Agatha Christie, es una novela de misterio y una de las mejores de la autora británica, a pesar de que su nombre original era desafortunado (busca su historia en Wikipedia y verás por qué lo digo). En una isla remota, mueren uno de diez invitados y así comienza la tarea de descifrar quién es el asesino, que sigue despachando víctimas durante la trama. Me imagino que sentado frente a la playa mientras lees, se podría pensar que el próximo en ser despachado por el asesino sería uno.

And Then There Were None, by Agatha Christie, is a mystery novel, and one of Christie’s best, despite the fact that its original title was unfortunate. (Look it up on Wikipedia and you’ll see what I mean.) On a remote island, one of the ten visitors dies, and with that, you’re challenged to figure out who the killer is while he (or she?) keeps killing off victims, one by one. I imagine that sitting on the beach while you read, you might even think that the next one to be dispatched by the killer could be you.

Master and Commander, de Patrick O’Brian, es una novela ambientada durante las guerras napoleónicas, dentro de un buque naval británico. En realidad, es una serie de novelas, pero con leer la primera debe bastar para saber si vas a leerte una más cada verano. Más allá de la trama, la novela pinta la vida dentro de un navío a principios de siglo XIX, desde el lenguaje hasta las costumbres, desde la comida hasta los procedimientos a seguir en un barco de vela. Master and Commander, by Patrick O’Brian, is a “costume drama” that takes place during the Napoleonic wars, on a ship of the British Navy. Actually, it’s part of a series of novels, but if you read the first one, you’ll know whether you want to keep reading one each summer. Over and above the plot, the novel portrays life on board a ship in the early nineteenth century, from the language to the customs, from the food to the procedures to follow on a sailing ship. This one will make you feel like setting sail to defend the seas. doradobound

Lo que sé de Vera Cándida, de Verónique Ovaldé, es una novela francesa ambientada en una isla, que cuenta la historia de tres mujeres: Vera, su mamá y su abuela. Ovaldé crea un personaje memorable dentro de una trama que no te permite cerrar el libro, a pesar de tratar de asuntos cotidianos, sin elementos fantásticos. Será una dosis de realidad, aunque con un componente romántico digno de un romance costero.

Lo que sé de Vera Cándida, by Verónique Ovaldé, is the Spanish translation of the French novel Ce que je sais de Vera Candida that takes place on an island and tells the story of three women: Vera, her mother, and her grandmother. Ovaldé creates a memorable character within a plot that’s a real page-turner despite the fact that it deals with everyday issues and has no elements of fantasy. It’s a dose of reality, but with a soupçon of romance worthy of a sunny day by the seashore.

To the Lighthouse, de Virginia Woolf, es una de las obras más reconocidas de la autora británica. Cuenta la historia de una familia en su casa costera de veraneo. El fluir de consciencia de la narración te hará pensar que puedes leerle los pensamientos a la voz narrativa. Es una técnica que puede confundir, por tanto, requiere cierta paciencia para seguirla. Puedes dejarte llevar dentro de las intrigas de una familia adinerada.

To the Lighthouse, by Virginia Woolf, is one of the British author’s most recognized works. It tells the story of a family in their summer house on the seaside. The stream of consciousness of the narration will make you think you can read the main character’s thoughts. It’s a technique that can sometimes be a bit confusing, though, so it takes a bit of patience to follow what’s going on. But if you let it, it will carry you along through the intrigues of a well-to-do family.

Los infortunios de Fátima Moniz, de María Zamparelli, ganó el premio de novela de 2020 del PEN Club Internacional de Puerto Rico. Cuenta la historia de la hija de Cristóbal Colón dentro de una trama de lo que se le llama historia trocada. En este tipo de ficción, los sucesos históricos no cambian, sino que las razones o la manera en que suceden las decide quien escribe. Es una travesía entre la imaginación y la historia, es decir, ya que Colón continúa reconocido por encontrar América, pero el mundo obvia el rol de la hija.

Los infortunios de Fátima Moniz, by María Zamparelli, won the PEN Club International, Puerto Rico Chapter’s 2020 prize for a novel. It tells the story of the daughter of Christopher Columbus within a plot that’s been called “historia trocada” in Spanish, or “alternative history.” In this type of fiction, the historical events remain unchanged, but the reasons for them, or the way they happen, or even the characters involved, are invented by the author. It’s a combination of imagination and history, that is, since Columbus is still recognized as the discoverer of America, but nobody ever talks about the role his daughter played.

Cuando la marquesina de su casa se le hizo pequeña, supo que era el momento de buscar una finca para sembrar lo que consumía. Fue así como Edwin Suárez Rivera regresó a Dorado, en donde se crio, para encontrar un terreno que le permitiera lograr la autosustentabilidad. Con botas y machete en mano, el joven nos dio un recorrido por sus cosechas que están justo al lado de su casa. “Hace tres años que no compro un guineo en el supermercado; consumo los que siembro”, dice orgulloso de los frutos de su Finca El Tabonuco, en el barrio Maguayo. Su cosecha se basa en “el plato común boricua”.

When the carport in his house got too small, he knew it was time to find a plot of land to plant what he ate. And that was how Edwin Suárez Rivera returned to Dorado, where he’d grown up, to find a piece of land where he could achieve self-sustainability. With boots on and machete in hand, Edwin gave us a tour of his garden, which is just beside his house. “It’s been three years since I’ve bought a banana in the supermarket; I eat the ones I grow,” he says proudly of the produce from his farm, Finca El Tabonuco, in Barrio Maguayo. His plantings are based on the “usual Puerto Rican plate.” He plants beans, bananas,

Su deseo es crear un sistema de suscripción semanal o bisemanal, en el que pueda hacer entregas a domicilio de una canasta que quiere llamar Tu Finca. En esta vislumbra incluir vegetales, verduras, hierbas y frutas. “Quiero brincar supermercados e intermediarios para llegar directamente a los hogares. El sistema de suscripción permitirá que adaptemos nuestros paladares a la temporada”, expresa Edwin. No sabe bien cómo empezó su pasión por sembrar, aunque su mamá estudió agronomía, profesión que no ejerció. Fue ella quien le sugirió el nombre El Tabonuco, en honor a uno de nuestros árboles nativos. Pero también, porque es fanática de la música de Tony Croatto y de su canción “El Tabonuco”. Mucho de lo que pone en práctica en su finca lo aprendió viendo vídeos en YouTube, leyendo y sembrando. Utiliza un sistema agropónico en el que cría tilapia y los desperdicios de los peces sirven de abono para los semilleros. Además, ya comenzó la construcción de estructuras en foam para la siembra vertical, con el propósito de duplicar el espacio y aumentar la producción. A largo plazo desea desarrollar un sistema solar. Edwin cree en que la siembra, aun a pequeña escala (como en una marquesina), puede ayudarnos a producir comestibles y a cortar la dependencia de las importaciones. “Tenemos que tener conciencia de cómo nos nutrimos. Por eso decidí ser lo más autosustentable posible”, comenta satisfecho. Sigue a Edwin en su página de Instagram, Finca El Tabonuco, y disfruta de sus posts tan coloridos como informativos. lettuce, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, papayas, basil, and onions, among other crops. There are a few flowers, too, like sunflowers. What he wants to do is create a system of weekly or biweekly subscriptions in which he can make home delivery of a produce basket he wants to call “Tu Finca”, or Your Farm. He sees the basket as containing vegetables, greens, herbs, and fruit. “I want to skip the supermarket and intermediaries and go straight to people’s homes. The subscription system will allow us to adapt our palates to the season,” Edwin asserts. He’s not sure how his passion for vegetable- and fruit-gardening started, although his mother studied agronomy, a profession she never practiced. It was she who suggested the name El Tabonuco, in honor of one of our native trees but also because she’s a fan of the music of Tony Croatto and his song “El Tabonuco.” (In English, the tabonuco [Dacryodes excelsa] is called the candlewood tree.) Much of what Edwin puts into practice on his farm he learned from watching videos on YouTube, reading, and, of course, planting. He uses an agroponic system in which he raises tilapia, and the waste from the fish serves as fertilizer for his seedbeds. He’s also begun construction on foam structures for vertical gardening, intending to double his space and increase production. Long term, he hopes to develop a solar-energy system. Edwin believes that gardening, even on a small scale (like in a carport), can help us produce food and reduce our dependence on imports. “We have to be aware of how we feed ourselves,” he says. “That’s why I decided to be as self-sustaining as possible.” Follow Edwin on his Instagram page, Finca El Tabonuco, and enjoy his posts, which are as informative as they are colorful. Desde la carretera solo ves grama, pero si te adentras al camino en barro que te lleva a la finca Güakiá todo cambia. Es increíble como ahí, tan cerca de la carretera, hay tanta vida, y sueños realizados y por cumplir. Varios tulipanes africanos se asoman con sus flores anaranjadas, dando sombra a las siembras y también a los visitantes. De las once cuerdas de terreno solo unas pocas están cultivadas al momento con productos orgánicos como recao, orégano, panapén, batata, limoncillo, pepinillo, tomate, ají dulce y flores comestibles como marigold y cosmo. Puedes separar tu canasta y cada primer y tercer sábado de mes recogerla. Güakiá siembra usando los principios de la agroecología también conocido como agricultura adaptada al entorno, y la siembra forestal, para que los árboles le provean sombra a las cosechas. Proyecto colectivo Güakiá es una palabra taína que significa “nuestro o nosotros”. “Nos juntamos en el 2015 a soñar en conjunto. Escogimos el nombre por un asunto de pertenencia, 106

From the highway, all you see is grass, but if you turn down the red-clay road that leads to the farm called Güakiá, all that changes. It’s incredible how on this plot of land so near the highway there’s so much life, so many dreams that have come true, and so many still waiting to be fulfilled. Several African tulip trees with their flame-orange flowers shade the plantings, and the visitors. Of the eleven or so acres, only a few are cultivated at the moment, with organic crops like culantro, oregano, breadfruit, sweet potato, lemongrass, cucumber, tomatoes, aji dulce (the little peppers used in Puerto Rican sofrito), and edible flowers like marigold and cosmos. You can reserve your basket and stop by the farm every first and third Saturday of the month to pick it up. Güakiá employs the principles of agro-ecology, also known as agriculture adapted to the environment, and of forestry, so that trees provide shade for the crops. Collective project “Güakiá” is a Taíno word meaning “ours” or “us.” “We joined forces in 2015 for some collective dreaming. We chose the name as a way to show our sense of belonging, because the earth is ours. We came to Dorado in May of 2017, via the Dominican Sisters of the Holy Cross, who own this land. They

porque la tierra es nuestra. Llegamos a Dorado en mayo de 2017, a través de las Hermanas Dominicas de la Santa Cruz, quienes son las dueñas de esta tierra. Adquirieron estas cuerdas en Higuillar con la ilusión de construir un colegio, pero eso no ocurrió. Se enteraron que buscábamos un terreno para sembrar, porque ninguno de nosotros tenía acceso a tierra. Cuando lo vimos quedamos encantados, no solo con la tierra, que está superviva y llena de nutrientes, sino porque tiene una buena ubicación. Tenemos un contrato de arrendamiento y un acuerdo colaborativo con ellas”, detalla Marissa Reyes, quien estudió biología y es una de los cuatro integrantes del colectivo. Stephanie Monserrate (propietaria de Jíbara Kombucha), Jan Paul Lebrón (arborista con estudios en arquitectura) y Francisco Díaz (productor de televisión), son también integrantes del proyecto. Sin ser agricultores, tomaron cursos de agricultura agroecológica y se lanzaron a la aventura. Tras el paso del huracán María, cuando apenas empezaban a limpiar el terreno, le trajeron comida caliente a los vecinos de la comunidad San Carlos, entre los que hay ancianos y encamados. “Nos enfocamos en conocer sus necesidades a la vez que íbamos abriendo camino y pensando en el diseño del lugar”, recuerda Marissa. Para que la finca crezca necesitan recaudar cerca de $30,000 para construir un pozo. Este ayudaría a mantener los cultivos, pero también a que la comunidad tenga agua en caso de una emergencia. Por ahora, recogen agua de lluvia en un gazebo adyacente, a través de un sistema que Jan Paul diseñó. Según pase la pandemia del COVID-19, desean traer nuevamente sus festivales de verano con recorridos, juegos de dominó, bingo, exhibiciones de artesanías y así poder compartir los espacios al aire libre de la finca para el recreo de todos. purchased this acreage in [Barrio] Higuillar with the idea of building a school, but that didn’t happen. They heard that we were looking for a plot of land to plant crops on, because none of us had access to land. When we saw it, we were thrilled not just with the land, which is super-rich and full of nutrients, but also because it’s in a really good location. We have a lease agreement and a collaboration agreement with them,” explains Marissa Reyes, who studied biology and is one of the four members of the collective. Stephanie Monserrate (owner of Jíbara Kombucha), Jan Paul Lebrón (an arborist who’s also studied architecture), and Francisco Díaz (a TV producer) are the other members of the project. Though not “farmers” per se, they’ve all taken courses in agro-ecological agriculture, and they took the plunge. After Hurricane Maria, when clearing the land was barely under way, these four adventurers took hot meals to their neighbors in the community of San Carlos, which included among its residents both the elderly and the bedridden. “We focused on learning about their needs at the same time we were cutting a path to the farm and thinking about the design of the place,” Marissa recalls. To help the farm grow, they need to raise about thirty thousand dollars for a well. This would help with the crops, but also ensure that the community has water in case of an emergency. For now, they catch rainwater in a nearby gazebo with a system that Jan Paul designed. As the COVID-19 pandemic wanes, they are hoping to once again hold their summer festivals, with tours, games of domino and bingo, and crafts exhibitions, in order to share the open-air spaces of the farm with everyone. Sabemos que será nostálgica para muchos, pues en este momento nuestros niños y jóvenes no han podido regresar a la escuela a causa de la pandemia. Según nos cuenta Nara Canino, subdirectora de Asuntos Culturales de Dorado y directora del Museo Casa del Rey Dr. Marcelino Canino Salgado, a esta escuela en el barrio Maguayo se le puso el nombre de su padre, Marcelino Canino Canino, quien la construyó junto a un grupo de padres y fue su director por años. While searching for images of days gone by in Dorado, we came across this one. We know it will be nostalgic for a lot of people, because these days our children and young people haven’t been able to go back to school due to the pandemic. We’re told by Nara Canino, assistant director of Cultural Affairs in Dorado and director of the Dr. Marcelino Canino Salgado Casa del Rey Museum, this school in Barrio Maguayo was named after her father, Marcelino Canino Canino, who built it with the assistance of a group of parents and was its principal for many years.
