I don't know why, but as soon as summer ends, my brain switches to autumn mode right away. It could be that many stores are doing their best to get me in the mood for the season with their merchandise displays. Nonetheless, the arrival of autumn fills me with great enthusiasm as I start planning for gatherings with dear friends and family. Durante este año, Dorado ha celebrado el centésimo octogésimo aniversario de su fundación. Ciento ochenta años de trabajo duro, entusiasta y consecuente para convertir al otrora barrio de Toa Baja en el municipio más seguro, próspero y atractivo del país. Esto dicho sin presunciones. Solo con la intención de subrayar lo que un pueblo puede alcanzar cuando trabaja arduamente y es capaz de superar diferencias políticas, socioculturales y religiosas en aras de su unidad, su progreso y su calidad de vida. No sabemos si los fundadores de Dorado, liderados por don Jacinto López Martínez, pensaron alguna vez en que llegaríamos tan lejos en áreas como la educación, el ambiente, la salud, la seguridad, el desarrollo turístico, las artes, la cultura, los deportes, la recreación y la infraestructura. Sí sabemos que desde el 22 de noviembre de 1842 hasta nuestros días, las diferentes generaciones han aceptado el reto de construir caminos de progreso, avanzar con ánimo y superar obstáculos en pro del bienestar integral de nuestro pueblo. En ese avanzar por caminos construidos a golpes de visión, determinación y firmeza, nos ha correspondido, a mi generación y a la administración municipal, encabezar durante los últimos treinta y cinco años la transformación de Dorado en el Paraíso de Puerto Rico que todos conocemos y disfrutamos hoy. Obra generalizada en campo y pueblo. Desarrollo industrial y comercial sin precedentes. Crecimiento urbanístico ordenado y sistemático. This year, Dorado celebrated the 180th anniversary of its founding. One hundred and eighty years of hard, enthusiastic, and consistent work to turn what was once a neighborhood of Toa Baja into the safest and most prosperous, and attractive municipality in the island. I say this without conceit, only to highlight what a community can achieve when it works hard and is capable of overcoming political, socio-cultural, and religious differences for the sake of unity, progress, and quality of life. We do not know if the founders of Dorado, spearheaded by Don Jacinto López Martínez, ever thought that we would come so far in terms of education, environment, health, security, tourism development, arts, culture, sports, recreation, and infrastructure. We do know that, from November 22, 1842, to the present day, different generations have accepted the challenge of building paths of progress, moving forward with courage, and overcoming obstacles for the overall wellbeing of our community.

Hace treinta años… Los sábados Marta sale de su casa en Río Grande y llega a la esquina del restaurante El Almendro en Dorado antes de las ocho de la mañana. Acomoda dos cubos llenos de agua fresca y coloca racimos de azucenas como si fueran de cristal. Con sus ojos negros acaparachados y sonrisa noble recibe a sus fieles clientes que se llevan a sus hogares el dulce olor de la flor blanca.

Thirty years ago... Every Saturday, Marta leaves her house in Río Grande and gets to the corner by the El Almendro restaurant in Dorado before 8:00 a.m. She sets out two buckets filled with fresh water where she carefully places her tuberose spikes, as if they were made of glass. With a noble smile and dark, deep-set eyes, she tends to her loyal clients, who happily walk away with a handful of white flowers, their sweet perfume trailing behind.

Más de uno quizás recuerda pasar alguna vacación en una casa u hotel en Dorado. ¡Cómo olvidar llegar al balneario Manuel “Nolo” Morales a las 3:00 de la tarde y no salir del agua hasta que el sol se escondía; o zambullirse en la piscina de alguna de sus hospederías! Sé de muchos que, al igual que yo, viven en la zona porque de niños se enamoraron de estas tierras tras visitarlas durante una vacación familiar.

A lot of us have memories of spending at least one holiday at a house or hotel in Dorado. How to forget arriving at the beach in Balneario Manuel “Nolo” Morales at 3 o‘clock and refusing to come out of the water until the sun set! Or the time we spent splashing around in the local hotel pools! I know that many, like me, live in the area because we fell in love with it as children after visiting during a family vacation.

Dorado was a poor town for many years. According to Dr. Canino Salgado's book, the municipality faced a huge budget crisis in the late 19th century. With no funds to cover its taxes, Dorado became part of Toa Alta. But in 1905, Dorado regained its status as a municipality. From Agriculture to Tourism and Gastronomy Dr. Canino Salgado's book mentions that entrepreneur and investor Laurance Rockefeller signed a contract with the Industrial Development

The Origins of Paradise in Puerto Rico Since before the town was founded, the area, known as “Alto del Dorado,” served as a resting and lodging place for those traveling between San Juan and the northwestern towns in the island, as documented by Dr. Marcelino J. Canino Salgado, renowned researcher of Puerto Rican folklore, philologist, and author of the only book on the town's history: Dorado, Puerto Rico: Historia, cultura, biografías y lecturas ("Dorado, Puerto Rico: History, Culture, Biographies, and Literature").Initially,Dorado used to be one of the many barrios in Toa Baja. However, local resident Jacinto López Martínez, along with many others, fought to establish a new town in a place where the floods would not be so devastating. Additionally, the sugar cane plantations in Toa Baja were already declining, so residents were looking for areas with more fertile land and other industries. Gradually, interest grew in turning Dorado into a municipality. Its numerous neighborhoods and the presence of haciendas, cattle ranches, and brick, tile and lime factories helped convince Governor Santiago Méndez Vigo to found “San Antonio de Dorado” on November 22, 1842.

Canino Salgado, reconocido investigador del folclor puertorriqueño, filólogo y autor del único libro sobre la historia del municipio, Dorado, Puerto Rico: Historia, cultura, biografía y lecturas. En sus inicios, Dorado era un barrio más de Toa Baja. Sin embargo, el toabajeño Jacinto López Martínez luchó junto a otros vecinos para crear un nuevo pueblo, en un lugar en donde las inundaciones no hicieran tantos estragos. Por otro lado, ya los sembradíos de caña de azúcar en Toa Baja estaban mermando, por lo que sus residentes buscaron otros lugares con tierras más fértiles y con otras industrias. Poco a poco aumentó el interés de que Dorado se convirtiera en un municipio. Sus múltiples barrios y la presencia de haciendas, hatos y fábricas de ladrillo, tejas y cal ayudaron a que el 22 de noviembre de 1842, el entonces gobernador, Santiago Méndez Vigo, decretara la fundación de “San Antonio dePorDorado”.muchos años Dorado fue un pueblo pobre. Según expone el Dr. Canino Salgado en su libro, a finales del siglo diecinueve surgió una gran crisis presupuestaria en el municipio, lo que condujo a que, en 1902, Dorado pasara a ser parte de Toa Alta porque no había dinero para pagar las contribuciones.

Poco después, se construyó El Dorado Hilton, en donde hoy ubican la urbanización Dorado del Mar y el hotel Embassy Suites by Hilton Dorado del Mar Beach Resort. Dorado también tiene hospederías pequeñas, hostales, casas y apartamentos para la renta a corto plazo. Su gastronomía es otro de sus atractivos. El pueblo está en la “ruta del chinchorreo” del norte, la que visitan cientos de personas cada fin de semana. Lo cierto es que, desde sus inicios, Dorado es el refugio de visitantes que disfrutan de uno de los atardeceres más bonitos frente al mar. Another one of its attractions is its gastronomy sector. The town is part of the “ruta del chinchorreo” (“chinchorreo route“) that crosses the north side and is followed by hundreds of people every weekend. You only need a board, a paddle, and your body. The first challenge will be achieving a point of balance to stay on top of the board as you paddle. After you've mastered this, you will learn that each paddle stroke engages all of your muscles to move the board efficiently. It should all work in tandem to achieve stability as you maneuver the board around the water. This constant movement will strengthen your arms, legs, and especially your core. 34 doradobound DE DORADO Sirenas, niñas con distintas expresiones y personalidades, plantas y simpáticos animalitos están bien presentes en el arte de Grace Mendoza Egea. Pero estas imágenes no solo adornan sus acuarelas, si no también cojines, blusas, bolsos y pulseras. Sus pinturas son brillantes, llenas de vida. Muchas están inspiradas en su niñez en el trópico. La sanjuanera –que hace varios años reside y trabaja en Dorado–siempre se ha sentido atraída por el mar y sus colores. Sus primeras memorias son en una playa o en la casa de su madrina en Ensenada, en Culebra.

El arte tropical de Grace Mendoza Egea's artwork featured mermaids, girls of varying expressions and personalities, plants, and cute little animals. But these characters not only appear in her watercolors; they also embellish cushions, shirts, purses, and bracelets. Her paintings are vibrant and full of life. Many of them have been inspired by her childhood in theHailingtropics.from San Juan –although she has spent many years living and working in Dorado– Grace has always felt an attraction for the sea and its colors. Her first memories are on a beach or at her godmother's home in Ensenada, Culebra.

Grace tiene un segundo bachillerato en Arte de la Escuela de Artes Plásticas y Diseño. Realizó una tesina que aborda la presencia de las sirenas en diversas facetas del arte. Her Origins in Art Grace's father, a draftsman, pioneered the laminating system in Puerto Rico. Many visual artists would visit his business, where Grace used to help working the photocopier and the guillotine. Her mother, who always dreamed of being a dancer but was unable to, made sure that Grace was exposed to the artistic scene. Which is why Grace took up dancing and modeling as a child. In her podcast, Hablemos de arte, aparte. Con Grace Mendoza, she comments on how these lessons remained with her throughout her life because “grace and good manners open doors for you.”

“Ser maestra es una misión. Uno está impactando la vida de otros. La labor de un maestro en el salón de clases es heroica. Admiro profundamente a mis compañeros maestros. Es importante que su trabajo se valore y se respete”, afirma.

“Being a teacher is a life mission. You are impacting others’ lives. A teacher's work in the classroom is heroic. I have a profound admiration for my colleague educators. It's important that we all value and respect their work,” she asserts.

Una vez al mes Grace también imparte clases de arte en la Sala de Exposiciones del Plata, como parte de un trabajo colaborativo auspiciado por arte_FITS. Foundation y el municipio de Dorado.

In terms of a higher education, she chose to attend the College of Education at the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras campus. She confesses that she never envisioned herself teaching at a school but rather through her own venture. And she did it. For twelve years, she had a space in San Juan where she offered art courses. By 2017, she was spending her days being an artisan and an entrepreneur —a combination she loves. But after Hurricane Maria struck, craft fairs came to a halt for a while. She left for the United States and worked for six months at a daycare facility. Upon returning, she noticed that the conditions for selling handicrafts were not yet ideal. So, she decided to work as an art teacher. After submitting her resume to several schools, she was called to work at Dorado Academy. And so, little by little, the chips fell into place so she could end up living in this coastal town, close to the sea that she loves so much.

Once a month, Grace also teaches art classes at Sala de Exposiciones del Plata as part of a collaboration sponsored by arte_FITS.Foundation and the municipality of GraceDorado.holds a second bachelor's degree in Art from the School of Plastic Arts and Design. Her thesis work addressed the presence of mermaids in different art forms.

Sus comienzos en el arte Su papá era delineante y trajo a Puerto Rico el sistema de laminados. Muchos artistas plásticos visitaban el negocio, en donde Grace ayudaba a sacar copias o cortar con la guillotina. Por su parte, su mamá, quien siempre soñó con ser bailarina, pero no pudo, se aseguró de que Grace sí estuviera expuesta al ambiente artístico. Por esto, de niña, Grace tomó ballet y modelaje. En su pódcast de arte, aparte. Con Grace Mendoza comenta cómo esas clases la han acompañado toda su vida porque “los modales abren puertas”.Cuando llegó el momento de estudiar optó por la facultad de Educación en la Universidad de Puerto Rico, Recinto de Río Piedras. Confiesa que nunca se visualizó dando clases en una escuela, pero sí desde un local propio, y lo logró. Por doce años fue propietaria de un espacio en San Juan donde impartió cursos de arte. Para el 2017 dedicaba sus días a ser artesana y emprendedora, una faceta que le fascina. Pero, tras el paso del huracán María, las ferias de artesanía se detuvieron por un tiempo. Se fue a los Estados Unidos a trabajar por seis meses en un cuido de niños. A su regreso, notó que el ambiente para vender artesanías todavía no era el idóneo. Entonces decidió ser maestra de arte. Envió su resumé a distintas escuelas y la llamaron para trabajar en Dorado Academy. Fue así como, poco a poco, las fichas de su vida se acomodaron para que hoy resida en el municipio costero, cerca del mar que tanto ama.

36 doradobound DE DORADO “Asocio las sirenas con cómo la mujer ha tenido que luchar y desarrollarse a través de la historia. Pasan de ser un monstruo a un ser venerado porque se le da un poder positivo. Por eso, mi estudio fue desde el origen de las sirenas hasta su regeneración”, abunda.

“I associate mermaids with how women have had to fight and evolve throughout history. They went from being a monster to a revered creature because they were given a positive value. So my work spanned from the origins of mermaids until their regeneration,” Grace explains.“During my research, the San José Church in Old San Juan was undergoing restoration. Within the Virgen del Rosario Chapel, they found a series of frescoes featuring four mermaids. I met with architect (and historian) Jorge Rigau, who was kind enough to allow me to see them. I told him I wanted to research why those mermaids were there. I wept when I saw them. They are stunning frescoes, perhaps the oldest in Puerto Rico, dating back to the 1500s,” she says, brimming with excitement. Her research work was so thorough that her professors insisted she publish it as a book, something she hopes to accomplish in the near On top of that, she wants to return to fulltime entrepreneurship. As of now, she has a virtual shop, Mermaids showcases(mermaidsdistrict.com),Districtwhichher Gracious collection. The shop also features artwork by her brother, Manuel Mendoza Egea, and by her husband, Ángel Nevárez, former professor at the School of Plastic Arts Grace also hopes to open an art gallery in Dorado, perhaps with a café attached. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her three cats and two dogs, takes care of her plants, visits Dorado's restaurants, learns to make handmade soaps, and practices yoga by the sea in barrio Mameyal, Dorado. It all brings her back to her love of the tropics and the sea.

“Mientras hacía la investigación estaban restaurando la iglesia de San José en el Viejo San Juan. Como parte de los trabajos encontraron en su Capilla de la Virgen del Rosario unos frescos con imágenes de cuatro sirenas. Me reuní con el arquitecto (e historiador) Jorge Rigau, quien fue tan amable de permitirme verlas. Le dije que quería hacer una investigación de por qué esas sirenas estaban allí. Al verlas lloré. Son frescos hermosos, quizás los más antiguos de Puerto Rico, datan del 1500 y pico”, dice emocionada. Su trabajo investigativo fue tan riguroso que sus profesores le han insistido en que debe publicarlo como libro, algo que espera lograr en un futuro quierecercano.Además,regresar emprendimientoala tiempo completo. En su tiempo libre disfruta de sus tres gatos y dos perros, de cuidar sus plantas, visitar los restaurantes de Dorado, aprender a hacer jabones artesanales y practicar yoga frente al mar del barrio Mameyal en Dorado. Don't Talk to Me About Resilience Por Tatiana Pérez Rivera no me hablesde Resiliencia

Llevamos años haciendo malabares para encarar la crisis económica en la que nos sumimos a mediados de los años dosmil.

Ahora vivimos en modalidad inflación, un proceso que ha desequilibrado la producción, la demanda, nuestros bolsillos y, por supuesto, nuestros planes a corto y largo plazo. Llueve sobreCadamojado.vezque pienso en que todo está más difícil, repaso la vida de mis abuelos en el Puerto Rico del siglo pasado. ¿Sacrificios? Sí, hicieron muchos. ¿Migración a Estados Unidos a trabajar? También la vivieron. Parecería que distintas generaciones boricuas caminamos en círculos. Cambiamos modas, estilos de vida y metas, pero la esencia de nuestros proyectos inconclusos es la Cuandomisma. entro en fase de insomnio, pienso en el país que heredaron mis abuelos. El que construyeron con sus manos –literal, no es una metáfora– y el que nos legaron. Si esa terrible pobreza creó familias trabajadoras, honestas y bienintencionadas, como a la que pertenezco, tengo la certeza de que sobreviviremos y estaremos bien. La pregunta es cómo. No tengo que enumerar los múltiples desengaños que nos regala la clase política del país ni la frágil situación en que vivimos durante los últimos cinco años. Pero seguimos en pie como hicieron nuestros abuelos y abuelas, como hacen los árboles de raíces firmes tras un ciclón o terremoto. Esa fortaleza innata debe darnos seguridad para continuar adelante y para ayudar al que no puede igualar el Nopaso.me hablen de resiliencia. Ese debe ser un estado temporero y aquí lo vivimos 24/7. Cuando la luz roja del semáforo lo hizo detenerse, un hombre agarró el cencerro que descansaba en el asiento del pasajero de su auto y con él acompañó la canción de salsa que sonaba en su radio. También cantaba a viva voz, esgalillao, como requiere un concierto o una parranda. Quien lo viera, pensaría que no se enteró –no le importó o no entendió– que llenar el tanque de gasolina nuevamente le costaría casi el doble de lo usual.

While stopped at a red light, a man grabbed a cowbell from the passenger seat and played it along to the salsa song blaring from his car radio. He sang the words at the top of his lungs, the way you would at a concert or a parranda. Seeing him like this, you'd think he didn't get the memo –didn't understand or didn't care— that filling up his tank would now cost almost double the usual amount.

We have been grappling for years with the economic crisis that has engulfed us since the mid-2000s. We now live in inflation mode, a process that has thrown not only production and demand out of whack, but our personal finances and short- and longterm plans as well. When it rains, it pours. Whenever I feel that everything has become more difficult, I think back to my grandparents’ lives in Puerto Rico during the last century. Did they make sacrifices? Yes, quite a few. Was there a migration wave to find work in the U.S.? Yes, and they lived through it. It almost seems like each generation of Puerto Ricans is walking in circles. Trends, lifestyles, and goals may have changed, but the essence of our unfinished projects remains the same. On sleepless nights, I think of the country my grandparents inherited. The one they literally built with their own hands and became their legacy. If their terrible scarcity gave way to hardworking, honest, and well-meaning families (like mine), I am certain we will survive and do just fine. The question is,Ihow?don't need to list the many disappointments we've suffered under our local politicians, nor the precarious situation we have endured for the past five years. And yet, we still stand, like our grandparents did, like firmly rooted trees in the face of earthquakes or hurricanes. This innate strength should bolster us as we move forward and help those who cannot keep up. Don't talk to me about resilience. Resilience should be a momentary state, but we live it 24/7. Let's talk about determination and ingenuity to find new paths, because we carry within us the joy to sweeten this bitter road. In fact, let me get my cowbell.

Desde niña, Victoria Sofía Monteagudo Santos no ha parado de disfrutar de las distintas ramas de las artes: lo mismo declama que disfruta del baile contemporáneo, el canto y la actuación. En segundo grado audicionó para una obra de teatro musical de su escuela TASIS Dorado, pero no fue seleccionada. En tercer grado volvió a intentarlo y esa vez logró ser parte de la obra teatral. Y este pasado mayo representó a Puerto Rico en la semifinal nacional (región 2) de la competencia de declamación en inglés Poetry Out Loud, en donde participaron cincuenta y cuatro jóvenes de escuela superior de Estados Unidos y sus territorios. From an early age, Victoria Sofía Monteagudo Santos has enjoyed all art forms: she throws herself into the spoken word, modern dance, singing, and acting all with the same gusto. In 2nd grade, she auditioned for a musical play at her school, TASIS Dorado, but was not selected. She tried again in 3rd grade and successfully landed a role this time. And last May, she represented Puerto Rico in the national semifinals (region 2) of the English-language Poetry Out Loud Recitation Contest, along with 54 other high school students from the United States and its territories.

del covid, la competencia nacional de este año fue a través de la plataforma Zoom. Para el próximo año, Victoria añora participar sobre un escenario y conocer en persona a los otros estudiantes. También, quiere llegar a la competencia final o incluso ganarla. A nivel local, la competencia es organizada por la Oficina de Apoyo a las Artes del Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña, mientras que a nivel de los Estados Unidos, es auspiciada por la National Endowment for the Arts y la Poetry Foundation. Victoria llegó a la competencia local por casualidad. Como parte de una clase tuvo que declamar un poema. Su maestra en TASIS Dorado, y ahora mentora, Irene Figueroa, vio su potencial para participar en Poetry Out Loud. Esta es la segunda ocasión que compite. Como referente, Victoria observa el desempeño de otros jóvenes declamadores. “Verlos me da un boost de que si ellos lo hacen, yo también”, dice entusiasmada. La joven vive desde los cinco años en Dorado junto a su mamá, papá y sus dos hermanos menores (trece y quince años). Próxima a cumplir diecisiete años, ya sabe que quiere ir a la universidad, aunque aún desconoce qué estudiará. Sí sabe que hará una concentración mayor en alguna carrera que no esté relacionada al ambiente artístico, aunque podría hacer una concentración menor en una rama ligada al arte. Quiere tener opciones, pero afirma: “el arte siempre será parte de mí”.

A días de nuestra entrevista, Victoria partió a Italia y a Alemania por dos semanas junto a sus compañeros del Club de Liderazgo de TASIS Dorado.“Yome meto en todas las actividades de la escuela. He tomado todas las clases de actuación que dan, además tomé francés y estoy en el Club de Liderazgo. Trabajo duro para todo. Hay que poner empeño en el trabajo. Esas son las cosas que me hacen feliz”, manifiesta risueña. Her preparation for the competition shows her character and determination: “I practiced twice a week at school, as well as 30 minutes every day during lunch time or any other break I had and when I arrived home. I am a perfectionist. For the local contest, I did 50 takes of the same poem.”

"I get involved in all the school activities. I've taken all the acting classes they've offered. I also took French and joined the Leadership Club. I work hard at everything. You must be committed to your work. These are the things that make me happy,” she concludes with a smile.

Due to the COVID pandemic, the national contest was held through the Zoom platform this year. But Victoria dreams of participating on stage and personally meeting the other students next year. She also hopes to advance to the finals and even become the winner. Locally, the competition is organized by the Oficina de Apoyo a las Artes (“Office of Support for the Arts”) of the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture; while in the United States, it is sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the PoetryVictoriaFoundation.cameacross the local contest by chance. As part of a class, she had to recite a poem. Irene Figueroa, her teacher at TASIS Dorado and now her mentor, saw her potential to participate in Poetry Out Loud. This is her second time competing. Victoria observes the performances of other fellow speakers for reference. “Seeing them gives me a boost. If they can do it, so can I,” she saysTheenthusiastically.teenagerhaslived in Dorado since she was 5 years old, with her mom, her dad, and her two younger brothers (13 and 15 years old). She will soon turn 17 and already knows she wants to attend college, although she has not yet chosen a career. She does know she will select a major unrelated to the arts but could consider pursuing a minor in an art-related field. She wants to have options but assures that “art will always be part of me.”

For months now we've been talking about a global food crisis. Since the Russo-Ukrainian War began in March, we’ve all been feeling its effects in the pit of our stomachs. Both gas and food distribution prices skyrocketed. A bag of groceries at the supermarket, which used to run $25, will now cost you about $40. And inflation is expected to keep soaring. In Puerto Rico, we only produce 15% of the food we eat. The rest of it is shipped in from Florida. Therefore, learning how to preserve food would be a wise choice in times like these.

Y según los pronósticos, la inflación seguirá subiendo.

“El tema de la conservación de alimentos es complicado”, explica Crystal Díaz, propietaria de PRroduce, una compañía que distribuye cosecha local a domicilio. La empresaria explica cómo la población cree “falsamente que el supermercado tiene todo, todo el tiempo”.

Existen varias maneras de conservar alimentos, desde el tratamiento con calor, las conservas caseras de vegetales y frutas, con vinagre, aceites, por deshidratación y los alimentos fermentados.

Lo principal a la hora de conservar alimentos es la planificación. Conocer qué alimentos come tu familia, cuánta comida quieres almacenar y cuánto tiempo tienes disponible para el proceso. Es vital saber que los alimentos se dan por temporada y muy pocos abundan los doce meses del año.

“The subject of food preservation is complex,” explains Crystal Díaz, owner of PRoduce, a company that delivers local produce door to door. The entrepreneur says that the general population “shares the misconception that supermarkets have everything at all times.”

Hacer conservas le ha alargado la vida de las cosechas locales que distribuye, disminuye los desechos orgánicos y le ha ayudado a aumentar sus ventas. “A nosotros nos representa un aumento del 7% en el ticket”, explica Díaz, mencionando las conservas de berenjenas en escabeche, el pesto y las jaleas de frutas, como las favoritas.

In the farmer's case, she dehydrates basil, nettles, ginger, edible flowers, pineapples, and leeks. And she always has food stored away to share around. This ancient technique allows you to store fruits, grains, vegetables, meats, and fish. Foods can be dehydrated by direct exposure to sunlight or using a dehydrator appliance. Once the food is dehydrated, it is thenAnothercanned.traditional technique to store food is canning, also known as bottling. This heat-based technique involves several steps. It would be best to obtain guidance from specialized videos or literature on the specific temperatures to use when preparing the containers and the food to be preserved. Moreover, keep these important factors in mind: foods are classified as either acid or low-acid, and both require different temperatures to kill the bacteria and microorganisms; the containers must be glass, more popularly known as Mason jars; and preserves can last for years in Accordingstorage.toDíaz, this practice has been highly beneficial for her business. Canning foods has extended the life of the local crops she delivers, reduces organic waste, and has helped boost her sales. “It represents a 7% increase on the average ticket,” Díaz claims, adding that the all-time favorites are the pickled eggplants, the pesto sauce, and the fruit jellies. Díaz suggests being creative in the kitchen. She insists that we need to break away from the norm. “I make pesto with coriander!” she gleefully confesses. “There are many ways to preserve food. Coming up with new recipes featuring ingredients we already know is one of them.” So have fun and be creative as you use these foods during meal prep.

For example, the local tomato production in Puerto Rico is at its peak between December and May. During the rest of the year, you can get tomatoes, but harvesting them is more difficult. Therefore, a good way to plan your food preservation is to know the peak months for the foods that you eat. That way, you can purchase or grow the produce you plan to store.

De hecho, en la página web del Departamento de Agricultura de Puerto Rico, puedes acceder al Calendario de abundancia, una lista de los productos agrícolas en Puerto Rico y los meses de mayor cosecha. La agricultora, por su parte, deshidrata albahaca, ortiga, jengibre, flores comestibles, piña y ajo puerro. Y siempre tiene comida almacenada para compartir. Con esta técnica milenaria se pueden almacenar frutas, granos, vegetales, carnes y pescados. Los alimentos se pueden deshidratar directamente al sol o utilizando una máquina deshidratadora. Una vez se deshidratan, seOtraenvasan.delas técnicas clásicas para almacenar alimentos son las conservas, también conocidas como canning. Esta técnica de calor tiene varios pasos detallados a seguir. Lo ideal es orientarse con vídeos o literatura especializada sobre las temperaturas específicas a la hora de preparar los envases y el material a conservar. Pasos importantes a tomar en cuenta: los alimentos se dividen en ácidos y bajos en ácidos, lo que requiere temperaturas distintas para matar bacterias y microorganismos; los potes de almacenaje deben ser de cristal, conocidos como Mason jars, las conservas pueden durar años almacenadas.

Díaz sugiere la creatividad a la hora de cocinar. Insiste en que hay que desafiar la norma. “¡Yo hago pesto con cilantrillo!”, celebra. “Hay muchas maneras de conservar comida, y comenzar a imaginar nuevas recetas con ingredientes que ya conocemos es otra manera de preservar”.

Or we can take a cue from Betzy Cameron, ecological farmer at Finca La Yuca in Arecibo: “My mantra is: Don't let the harvest go to waste.” In fact, the website of the Department of Agriculture of Puerto Rico gives you access to an Abundance Calendar and a list of agricultural products in Puerto Rico and their peak harvest months.

The physical distancing required during the recent pandemic has left its mark on how we relate socially and culturally. The pandemic has provided spaces and themes for artistic creation in the Puerto Rican context, all in tune with the international scene. This is the case for artist and pharmacist Julio Lugo Rivas. In Un lugar de luz invisible (“A Place of Invisible Light”), his last exhibition at the Reunión space, he displayed work developed during the first year of the COVID-19 pandemic. He highlighted the collage technique (acrylic and rubber on canvas) in the piece Invitro. Reproducción sin contacto (“Invitro. Non-contact Reproduction”) (2020).

Por motivos de especificidad, tiendo a separar la ciencia ficción de la fantasía, aunque suelen amontonar los dos subgéneros en la misma categoría. Sin embargo, para mí no es lo mismo definir una obra como El señor de los anillos, de J. R. R. Tolkien, con sus dragones, elfos y orcos, en la misma categoría que 2001: una odisea espacial, de Arthur C. Clarke, con sus temas de inteligencia artificial, alienígenas y naves espaciales. La justificación detrás de los hechos en cada subgénero es radicalmente distinta.

La fantasía suele justificar lo fantástico por medio de la magia o la mitología, mientras que la ciencia ficción lo hace con la ciencia. Es decir, si una protagonista en la fantasía es capaz de tener la fuerza de diez hombres, suele haber una explicación mágica, como un hechizo, una bendición de los dioses o algo por el estilo. Podríamos tener la misma situación en una novela de ciencia ficción, pero la explicación sería una armadura electrónica, una operación biónica o algo así. Por tanto, en esta lista de recomendaciones de libros de ciencia ficción, obviaré la fantasía. Dentro de la ciencia ficción, que prefiero utilizar el término ficción especulativa, hay varias vertientes. Por ejemplo, hay series que comprenden de varios tomos, como Las crónicas marcianas, de Ray Bradbury o Fundación, de Isaac Asimov, que son más bien sagas. Existen otras obras, como 1984, de George Orwell, o Frankenstein, de Mary Shelley, que comprenden de un tomo singular. Dentro de la ciencia ficción hay varios géneros, como la especulación histórica (¿qué sucedería si los nazis ganaran la Segunda Guerra Mundial?, por ejemplo), la ciencia ficción dura (tratan de ciencias “duras”, como la física o la química) o suave (ciencias como la sicología o la sociología), entre muchos otros. Aquí te incluyo un panorama general de diversos temas.

In the interest of being specific, I tend to separate science fiction from fantasy, although both subgenres are usually dumped in the same category. However, I feel that a novel like The Lord of the Rings, by J. R. R. Tolkien, with its dragons, elves, and orcs, should not be in the same category as Arthur C. Clarke's 2001: A Space Odyssey, with its elements of artificial intelligence, aliens, and spaceships. The facts and events in each subgenre are justified in wildly different ways. Fantasy usually justifies the unreal through magic or mythology, while science fiction is based on science. That is to say, if the leading figure in a work of fantasy has the strength of ten men, there tends to be a magical explanation, such as a spell, a blessing from the gods, or something of the kind. We could see the same situation in a science fiction novel, but it would be explained by electronic armor, bionic technology, etc. Therefore, this list of recommended science fiction books does not include works of Sciencefantasy.fiction, which I would rather call speculative fiction, encompasses several trends. For example, some series span multiple tomes, like The Martian Chronicles, by Ray Bradbury, or Foundation, by Isaac Asimov, which are more like sagas. Other written works, such as George Orwell's 1984 or Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, only comprise a single tome. Science fiction contains many genres, like speculative history (for example, what would happen if the Nazis had won World War II?), hard science fiction (based on “hard” sciences, like physics and chemistry), and soft science fiction (focused on sciences like psychology or sociology), among others. In Latin America, some place author Jorge Luis Borges as a science fiction writer, while others would disagree. The Argentine writer definitely used to mix and match different genres, but you can't deny that a huge amount of currentday science fiction authors have been influenced by his stories, such as Doctor Brodie's Report, where the protagonist travels to an alternate reality, and The Secret Miracle, in which the protagonist lives a whole year in just a second. The Invention of Morel, by Borges's compatriot Adolfo Bioy Casares, is a science fiction novella where the protagonist finds himself in a mysterious island full of “ghosts” generated by a machine. Recently, another Argentine, Samantha Schweblin, published Little Eyes, plays with the concepts of artificial intelligence and social media networks.

Up until recently, English-language science fiction had dominated the conversation on this genre. It has been popular for its magazine publications in the 20th century, which paved the way for authors like Margaret Atwood The Handmaid's Tale), William Gibson, Neuromancer, The Peripheral), Harlan I Have No Mouth, and I Must ), Phillip K. Dick (Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? The Minority Report), and Octavia Butler ). Nowadays, many of the most interesting ideas in science fiction come from authors hailing from other parts of the world, such as Kazuo Ishiguro Never Let Me Go) from Japan, Liu Cixin The Wandering Earth) from China, and Nigerian-American Nnedi Okorafor ( Technology, science, and the future— and sometimes, the past—are inherent to our existence, as essential as our emotions and desires. Puerto Rico has always been a testing ground for innovative tax incentives. For decades, the island led the way in attracting pharmaceutical companies, which generated a modern local manufacturing economy that, in turn, created our first, middle class. However, as other jurisdictions became more competitive, Puerto Rico lost its advantage in the pharmaceutical sector –thus necessitating the introduction of a new economic model. Acts 20 & 22 of 2012 —which later evolved into Act 60 of 2019— were created to foster the diversification of our economy by attracting of a large volume of businesses of all sizes. In summary, Act 60 of 2019 offers investors a flat corporate tax of 4% on the export of goods and services, a 0% tax on the Act 60 legal entity’s profit distribution, and a 0% tax on short- and long-term capital gains sourced in Puerto Rico. But to the island and its people, it offers an economic model that is impervious to the shortfalls of market trends in a particular industry.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, Puerto Rico’s tourism sector suffered another difficult setback only a few years after Hurricane Maria’s devastation. This same effect was felt by many of the manufacturing companies in the island (a sector comprising over 30% of our economy). However, the service sector, propelled by the various different industries sheltered under Act 60, continues to grow and has generated thousands of new jobs.

Grady White Family Rendezvous In Vieques

Over sixty boats came together to celebrate the first Grady White Family at Sea Rendezvous Vieques 2022. In addition to enjoying a day at one of the most beautiful beaches in Puerto Rico, funds were also raised to help improve the health services provided on the island known as Isla Nena ("Little Girl Island").

Más de sesenta embarcaciones se unieron para celebrar el primer Grady White Family at Sea Rendezvous Vieques 2022. Además de disfrutar de un día en una de las playas más hermosas de Puerto Rico, se recaudaron fondos para ayudar a mejorar los servicios de salud, de la llamada Isla Nena. En la actividad estuvieron presentes varios nautas residentes de Dorado, entre ellos David Soler, organizador del evento, junto a su esposa, la radióloga Eva Cruz, quienes están comprometidos en llevar servicios médicos a los lugares donde no los haya, en especial los de mamografías.

Several boaters from Dorado were present, including event organizer, David Soler, and his wife, radiologist Eva Cruz, both of whom are committed to bringing medical services (especially mammograms) to places where there are none.

Celebrating Puerto Rican Culture

An event was held a few days ago at the Roof Garden of the Austin Central Library (Austin, Texas) in benefit of The Jane Stern Community Library, located in Dorado, PR. Our Puerto Rican roots served as inspiration for the table centerpieces, and the public was able to enjoy our traditional bomba and plena music and dances at the event.

En días recientes se celebró un evento en los jardines de la azotea del Austin Central Library, en Austin, Texas, a beneficio de la biblioteca The Jane Stern Community Library, ubicada en Dorado. Las raíces puertorriqueñas fueron inspiración para los centros de mesas y nuestro baile de bomba y plena se escuchó y se bailó durante la actividad.

La clase graduanda del 2022 de TASIS Dorado celebró su espectacular baile de graduación en el Fairmont El San Juan Hotel. Los sesenta graduandos y sus familias, la administración y la facultad de la escuela, e invitados, disfrutaron de una noche inolvidable y esplendorosa.

The TASIS Dorado Class of 2022 celebrated its spectacular Senior Prom at the Fairmont El San Juan Hotel. The 60 graduates and their families, administration, faculty, and guests enjoyed an unforgettable night full of splendor. The Class of 2022 donated $20,000 to Un Rayito de Sol en tu Habitación Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides ongoing support to cancer patients. Milly Centeno Events coordinated the beautiful setting, exquisitely decorated by Akua Event Design. The Seniors danced the night away to the sounds of Cuenta Regresiva and a surprise batucada performance.

La clase del 2022 hizo un donativo de $20,000 a Un Rayito de Sol en Tu Habitación, una organización sin fines de lucro que proporciona apoyo continuo a los pacientes de cáncer.

The Dairexus 2022 Class of Dorado Academy celebrated their high school graduation over an entire weekend at the Hyatt Regency Reserve in Río Grande. Graduates and their families enjoyed a variety of activities, including a beach party and the long-awaited Senior Prom. The slipper factory Dorado Hand Craft, located in Dorado, was welcomed by the community since its inauguration in 1949. Women and children devoted their time to manufacturing slippers in order to help offset the unemployment rates that plagued the island after the collapse of the sugar industry. Mujeres, niñas y niños emplearon su tiempo para tejer este tipo de calzado y paliar el desempleo que reinó durante esos años a causa de la decadencia de la industria azucarera.
