En medio de cuerdas de terreno se asoma la casona amarilla de la familia Hernández, construida entre el 1952 y 1954, en un diseño del ingeniero Manuel Rivera Hernández. Si visitas Dorado con frecuencia, de seguro la has visto. Está en la carretera 693, camino al casco del pueblo. “Prácticamente nací aquí. Mi abuelo le mandó a hacer esta casa a un tío, pero él se dejó de la novia. A mi papá (José Nicolás Hernández) le iban a construir una casa en una lomita más arriba, cerca de la entrada de (la urbanización) Sabanera. Entonces, mi abuelo le dijo a mi papá que tenía que coger esta casa porque no iba a seguir construyendo”, recuerda entre risas Jorge Hernández, dueño de la propiedad. 24

In the midst of acres of land stands the yellow house belonging to the Hernández family. It was built between 1952 and 1954 to a design by engineer Manuel Rivera Hernández. If you visit Dorado often, you’ve almost certainly seen it. It’s on Highway 693, the road leading into the town center. “I was practically born here. My grandfather commissioned it for an uncle of mine, but he and his fiancée broke up. My father (José Nicolás Hernández) had been promised a new house on a hill a little higher up, near the entrance to where [the urbanization] Sabanera is now. But my grandfather told my fa-

La casa original tenía dos cuartos, pero con los años se añadieron dos más y un laundry. La piscina se construyó en la década del 1960. Tiene un patio interior que conecta con las habitaciones, y el mobiliario ha pasado de generación en generación (la mayoría proviene de su familia materna). Terrenos fructíferos “Dorado era un pueblo pequeño, todos se conocían”, recuerda Jorge. La carretera era rural, con árboles a ambos lados. Las vacas se llevaban por la carretera. La verja de la propiedad era bien bajita. El portón nunca se cerraba”. Vivió allí junto a sus padres y hermanos hasta el 1973, cuando un robo en la propiedad llevó a su mamá a querer mudarse. La casa permaneció vacía hasta el 1980 cuando Jorge se casó y se mudó allí con su esposa, Carmen L. Rosich. Sus tres hijos se criaron allí y, como él cuando joven, estos disfrutaron de correr a caballo a sus anchas por la finca. La familia Hernández llegó a tener hasta 1,000 cuerdas, que su bisabuelo, José Hernández Salguero, compró poco a poco. “En sus comienzos, los terrenos incluían una finca en el barrio Santa Rosa, que le llamaban Las Toronjas porque existía un sembradío de toronjas grandes”, detalla Jorge. “Las frutas se vendían a una planta en el barrio Espinosa, donde producían dulces y jugos. También se sembró caña de azúcar hasta la década del 1950. Mi abuelo se dio cuenta [de] que esa industria iba para atrás. Tenía una vaquería pequeña y empezó a ampliarla. En el 1957 fundó la Dorado Dairy y en 1964 la consolidó con otra que tenía la familia en Higuillar”. Hoy tienen unas 760 cuerdas, con diversos usos. Por ejemplo, tiene terrenos alquilados a empresarios dedicados a la crianza de gallinas y ganado ovino. Es con ellos que ahora trabaja José Daniel Beltrán, conocido como “Tite”, quien por años fue mayordomo de la finca familiar. Nació y se crio allí, y todavía reside en la finca. El abuelo de Tite, José Antonio Barbosa, también vivió y laboró allí y murió de ciento y pico de años. “Tite, como yo, se conoce la finca completa. Ya no tengo ganado, así que le dije a los dueños del negocio de pastoreo que confiaran en Tite, porque uno como él no lo van a conseguir”, confiesa Jorge. ¿Cómo llegaron los pavos reales? Cuando Jorge se casó le preguntó al mayordomo de la vaquería de la familia Fonalledas en Dorado sobre los pavos reales que se paseaban por sus terrenos. El mayordomo le consiguió una pareja y hoy, cuarenta años después, ya son más de cincuenta los que duermen en las ramas de los árboles de la propiedad. 26

ther that he had to take this house because he wasn’t going to keep building houses forever,” remembers Jorge Hernández, owner of the property today, with a laugh. The original house had two bedrooms, but over the years, more were added, as was a laundry room. The pool was built in the sixties. The bedrooms open into an interior courtyard, and the furniture has been passed down from generation to generation; most of it comes from the maternal side of the family. Fruitful land “Dorado was a small town—everybody knew one another,” Jorge recalls. “There was just a two-lane country highway, with trees on each side. The cows would be herded down the highway. The fence around the property was not high at all, and the gate was never closed.” He lived there with his parents and siblings until 1973, when a robbery on the property led his mother to want to move. The house remained empty until 1980, when Jorge married and moved there with his wife, Carmen L. Rosich. Their three children were raised there and, like him when he was young, they spent their afternoons and weekends riding horses over the property. The Hernández family eventually came to own as many as roughly a thousand acres, which Jorge’s great-grandfather, José Hernández Salguero, bought little by little. “Early on, the land included a farm in Barrio Santa Rosa. It was called Las Toronjas (Grapefruits) because there was this enormous grapefruit orchard,” Jorge tells us. “The fruit was sold to a plant in Barrio Espinosa that produced sweets and juices. There was also sugar cane, until the fifties. My grandfather realized that that industry was becoming a thing of the past. He had a small dairy, and he started expanding it. In 1957, he founded Dorado Dairy and in 1964 he merged it with another one the family owned in Higuillar.” Today the property encompasses 760 cuerdas, the equivalent of about 740 acres, and the land is put to a number of uses. For example, there are pieces leased to people who raise chickens and sheep. The former overseer of the family farm, José Daniel Beltrán, known as “Tite,” now works with those people. He was born and raised there, and still lives on the property. Tite’s grandfather, José Antonio Barbosa, also lived and worked there, and he died at over a hundred years old. “Tite, like me, knows the farm like the back of his hand. I don’t have livestock anymore, so I told the owners of the chicken and sheep operation to trust Tite, because they were never going to find anyone else like him,” Jorge says proudly. Where did the peacocks come from? When Jorge got married, he asked the manager of the Fonalledas family dairy in Dorado about the peacocks that were strutting about on their land. The manager found him a pair and today, years later, there are more than fifty peacocks and peahens that sleep in the branches of the trees on the property.

Estos son los preferidos de los clientes de Tony’s Place Bakery, quienes, generación tras generación, deleitan su paladar con postres hechos al verdadero estilo francés y europeo Uno de los primeros recuerdos que Roger Antoine Martínez, de 55 años, tiene de su niñez, es cuando su papá, el repostero Antoine Martínez (q.e.p.d.), lo llevaba a escondidas hasta la cocina del antiguo hotel Hyatt Regency Cerromar Beach Resort. Su padre le daba una taza de café, llena de crema, y lo sentaba en una tablilla bajita (para que no lo vieran), mientras completaba alguna tarea en la cocina. “Laboró en el Cerromar por cuatro o cinco meses porque tenía un genio que no duraba mucho en los trabajos. Renunciaba antes de que lo despidieran”, rememora entre risas, por su parte, Elba L. Colón, de 85 años y viuda de Antoine. La viequense lo conoció en Nueva York, en donde Antoine se desempeñó como repostero en el Rockefeller Center y en el Plaza Hotel. Antoine era español, pero se crio en Francia. And the customers have come, generation after generation, to delight their palates with pastries and desserts made in the authentic French and European way. One of the first memories that 55-yearold Roger Antoine Martínez has of his childhood is when his father, pastry chef Antoine Martínez (now deceased) would sneak him into the kitchen at the old Hyatt Regency Cerromar Beach Resort Hotel. His father gave him a cup of coffee—mostly cream—and sat him on a low shelf, so no one would see him, while he completed something he was doing in the kitchen. “He worked at the Cerromar for four or five months, because he was so temperamental that he wouldn’t stay long on a job. He’d resign before they fired him,” Elba L. Colón remembers with a laugh. Elba, who is 85 years old and was born in Vieques, is Antoine’s widow. She met Antoine in New York, where he was working as a pastry chef in Rockefeller Center and at the Plaza Hotel. Antoine was a Spaniard, but he had been raised in France. He was a master at the art of making decorations out of doradobound

Pero, en el 1972, estableció una pequeña repostería, en la marquesina de la casa donde la familia vivía alquilada, en la calle I de la urbanización Costa de Oro, camino al balneario de Dorado. Ya entre el 1976 y 1977, Antoine compró el terreno frente a la casa. “Le pagaba directamente a quien se lo vendió. Antoine era extranjero y no le daban crédito en los bancos”, recuerda su viuda. En el terreno se construyó un edificio que albergó la panadería, la casa familiar y hasta un colmado, que desapareció cuando llegó el primer supermercado al pueblo. Hoy, permanece la panadería. Los otros espacios están rentados. Cuando Roger Antoine cumplió diecisiete años, su padre le preguntó si quería ir a Francia a estudiar repostería. Roger Antoine, quien desde niño jugaba y ayudaba en el negocio, ni lo pensó. Llegó a Francia sin saber el idioma. Aprendió un poco viendo televisión. A veces dejaba los exámenes en blanco porque no entendía lo que le estaban preguntando. Recuerda que, desde el salón de clases, admiraba el tope de los Pirineos. “Estar en Francia me abrió la mente”, dice. Vio cómo las familias sembraban frutas y las comían de la misma planta. En sus clases aprendió a hacer tartas con frutas frescas. Después de graduarse, trabajó en varios restaurantes en Estados Unidos, hasta que regresó a la isla para laborar en la repostería de sus padres, Tony’s Place Bakery. Tras la muerte de su progenitor en el 2003, Roger Antoine y su madre siguieron al frente del negocio. Hoy, las tartas de manzana, de fresa y de cerezas, un arte que su padre no llegó a dominar, son algunos de los postres que los clientes no dudan en llevarse. ¿El secreto para que estos sigan fieles? Roger Antoine apuesta a los ingredientes de calidad. “Para hacer un solo postre tengo que confeccionar de dos a cinco recetas distintas, por ejemplo, hacer el chocolate y la crema”, comenta con orgullo el repostero. 30

In 1958, while he was the pastry chef at the Plaza, he won first prize at the 90th Annual Salon of Culinary Art, a competition at which French cooking demonstrations were presented live. Birth of Dorado’s first pastry shop After working in Las Vegas and in Mexico, the family returned to Puerto Rico. When Antoine resigned from Cerromar, a neighbor suggested he open his own business. At first, he would take his bread and pastries to a business in the town of Dorado, but in 1972 he opened a small pastry shop in the carport of the house his family rented on Calle I in the Costa de Oro urbanization, on the way to the Dorado public beach. Over two years, 1976 and 1977, Antoine bought a lot across the street from the house. “He made payments directly to the man that sold it to him. Antoine was a foreigner and the banks wouldn’t give him a loan,” his widow remembers. On that lot, Antoine built a building that housed the pastry shop, the family’s residence, and even a small grocery store, which closed when the first supermarket came to Dorado. Today, what’s left is the bakery. The other spaces are leased out. When Roger Antoine turned seventeen, his father asked him whether he’d like to go to France to study patisserie. Roger Antoine, who’d been playing and helping out in the kitchen since he was a boy, jumped at the chance. He arrived in France without a word of French. He learned a little by watching TV. Sometimes he’d leave his tests blank because he didn’t understand the questions he was asked. He remembers that he could look out his classroom windows and see the peaks of the Pyrenees. “Being in France opened my mind,” he says. He saw families planting fruits and eating them off the plants themselves. In his classes he learned to make tarts with fresh fruits. After he graduated, he worked in several restaurants in the States, until he returned to the island to work in his parents’ pastry shop, Tony’s Place Bakery. After his father died in 2003, Roger Antoine and his mother took over the business. Today, the apple, strawberry, and cherry tarts—one of the few pastries his father never quite mastered— are some of the desserts his customers come in for over and over. The secret to keeping them loyal? Roger Antoine says it’s the quality ingredients he uses. “To make one pastry I have to use anywhere from two to five different recipes—for example, one for the chocolate and one for the cream custard,” this second-generation pastry chef says proudly.

Todos los ojos apuntan al wing foil, lo último en deportes acuáticos. Para practicarlo no es necesario ser un experto en windsurf, kitesurf, stand-up paddle o incluso surfear. “Es tremenda manera de empezar un deporte de agua, pues no exige mucho tiempo de práctica para lograr disfrutarlo”, asegura Karla Barrera, propietaria de Goodwinds Watersports en Dorado Beach. Este es precisamente el principal interés del wingfoiling, ya que combina todas esas modalidades de disfrutar del mar, sin la exigencia de ser un experto y, además, es un deporte divertido, pero sobretodo, seguro. El wingfoiling ha enamorado a navegantes de toda la vida, como al doctor Yadiel Alameda, quien hace años practica el kitesurfing y el surfing. “El wingfoiling te permitirá experimentar el glide (deslizamiento sobre el agua) como ningún otro deporte de tabla, y hasta se vuelve adictivo”. Alexander, Alana y Estela Lugo, de diez, catorce y quince años, respectivamente, ya son unos expertos de este deporte acuático, guiados por su padre, el doctor Alexander Lugo. Para los hermanos Lugo, el wingfoiling es seguro, relajante y en él se puede hacer una conexión con el agua y la naturaleza. “Para nosotros es simplemente mágico, es volar en silencio por encima del agua”, dicen entusiasmados. 34

To practice wingfoiling you don’t have to be an expert at windsurfing, kitesurfing, stand-up paddling, or even just plain surfing. “It’s an awesome way to get into watersports, because it doesn’t demand a lot of time practicing before you can actually enjoy it,” says Karla Barrera, owner of Goodwinds Watersports at Dorado Beach. That, in fact, is the main allure of wingfoiling, since it combines all those ways of enjoying the ocean without requiring that you be an expert. And it’s a sport that’s fun and, above all, safe. People who have been practicing watersports all their lives have fallen in love with wingfoiling. One of them is Dr. Yadiel Alameda, who has been surfing and kitesurfing for years. “Wingfoiling lets you experience the glide like no other board sport. I’ll tell you, it becomes addictive!” Alexander, Alana, and Estela Lugo—ten, fourteen, and fifteen, respectively—are already experts at this new sport. They were initiated in it by their father, Dr. Alexander Lugo. For the Lugo siblings, wingfoiling is safe, relaxing, and allows you to make a connection with the water and all of nature. “For us, it’s just magic, it’s flying in silence over the water,” they say, their eyes sparkling like the surface of the sea.

Posiblemente padeces de diabetes tipo 2, una condición metabólica que desestabiliza el azúcar corporal y que puede afectar tu estado de ánimo, tu salud, tu peso y, lo que es peor, si no te cuidas, podrías aumentar la posibilidad de padecer de enfermedades del corazón, producir ceguera, insuficiencia renal y daños al sistema nervioso. Así lo advierte Lynn Aranda, personal wellness health y fitness coach. La buena noticia es que se puede prevenir. Solo requiere consistencia y tesón. Lynn nos ofrece los siguientes consejos básicos: •Evita los alimentos altos en azúcar. •Ingiere más frutas. Las mejores son las cítricas, como la naranja, la toronja y todas las berries, ya que contienen antioxidantes, vitamina C y fibra. •Aumenta la cantidad de vegetales en tus comidas, sobre todo los verdes, como espinacas, kale y brócoli. Aprovecha la variedad de productos frescos del país —que hoy en día se consiguen fácilmente— y cocina recetas nutritivas junto a tu familia. •Disminuye o evita las carnes rojas; opta por pescados como el salmón. •Prefiere los carbohidratos complejos, como la batata y los granos (como las lentejas, las habichuelas y la quinua). •Mide las porciones de comida. Es importante para mantener un peso saludable y controlar el azúcar en tu sangre. •Ejercítate. Los ejercicios aeróbicos —de baja intensidad y larga duración— como caminar, trotar, bailar y montar en bicicleta, son los más efectivos para controlar la insulina en la sangre. You take a bite. In seconds, the glucose in the food you eat enters your bloodstream and, without your realizing it, your pancreas produces the insulin you need to create energy. But what happens when your body doesn’t respond the way it should? You may have type-2 diabetes, a metabolic condition that destabilizes your body’s sugar level and may affect your mood, your health, your weight, and, worst of all, if you don’t take care of yourself, it may increase the possibility of heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, and damage to your nervous system. That’s what Lynn Aranda, personal wellness, health, and fitness coach, tells us. The good news is that all those things can be prevented. It just takes consistency and determination. Lynn gives us the following basic advice: •Avoid foods that are high in sugar. •Eat more fruit. The best are citrus fruits like oranges, grapefruit, and all berries, since they contain antioxidants, vitamin C, and fiber. •Increase the amount of vegetables in your diet, especially green vegetables like spinach, kale, and broccoli. Take advantage of the variety of fresh produce the island has to offer—which is easy to find today—and prepare nutritional meals with your family. •Reduce or avoid red meats; opt instead for fish like salmon. •Choose complex carbohydrates like sweet potatoes and grains like lentils, beans, and quinoa. •Measure the portions of the food you eat. It’s important to maintain a healthy weight and control your blood sugar. •Exercise. Aerobic exercises—low intensity and long duration—like walking, jogging, dancing, and biking, are the most effective for controlling the insulin in your blood. You can also play tennis, swim, or learn a new sport. •Always carry a bottle of water with you, to keep your body hydrated.

Los mundos de Lonstal es una novela gráfica para niños escrita por José Rabelo e ilustrada por Mariel Mercado. “En el 2000 se me ocurrió la idea para un mundo lleno de aventuras, pero no sabía cómo serían los personajes hasta que en el 2003 encontré a mi hijo jugando con una semilla a la cual le había insertado cuatro extremidades de alambre. Con esa figurita pude diseñar a Lonstal, el protagonista de esta novela gráfica, y a sus amigos”, cuenta el autor. Rabelo explica que la historia se inició como un cuento, pero decidió crear una obra a todo color. The Worlds of Lonstal is a children’s graphic novel written by José Rabelo and illustrated by Mariel Mercado. “In 2000, I was struck by the idea of a world full of adventures, but I didn’t know what the characters would look like, until 2003, when I found my son playing with a seed that he had stuck four wires into to create arms and legs. On the basis of that little figure I designed Lonstal, the protagonist of this graphic novel, and his friends,” Rabelo told us. He explained that the story began as just a short story, but he decided to create a full-color novel. Escucha, no grites Cuando quieras aclarar alguna situación o reprender algún comportamiento es importante que primero le des la oportunidad a ser escuchado. No lo interrumpas, no pierdas el control. Mientras te habla, observa su lenguaje corporal y el tono en que se expresa. Intenta ponerte en su lugar y entender cómo se siente. Se crio en San Juan, pero cuando comenzó a buscar un lugar para establecer su hostal seleccionó el casco del pueblo de Dorado. Desde entonces se ha insertado en el quehacer cultural y empresarial del municipio costero. Su propuesta es que los residentes de Dorado creen negocios y empleos que les permitan vivir de manera digna, tomando el turismo como industria primaria alrededor de la cual se desarrollen otras. Hansel tiene una visión amplia, que obtuvo cuando viajó como mochilero alrededor del mundo mientras estudiaba administración de empresas y música en Nueva York. “Creo que Puerto Rico tiene todo el potencial de mundo para tener una mejor y mayor actividad turística. Contamos con los recursos naturales, la calidad humana, la cultura, la música y el arte. Tenemos tantos elementos enriquecedores que el de afuera lo ve y le gusta”, comenta el también estudiante doctoral de psicología social comunitaria en la Universidad de Puerto Rico, Recinto de Río Piedras.

He grew up in San Juan, but when he began to look around for a place to establish a hostel, he chose the very heart of Dorado. Instead of the traditional Christmas colors, I’m thinking about neutrals suggested by nature, heightened by foliage and lights. Yes, she says, but not the traditional pine or fir. Instead, other foliage, like sage and rosemary. “You don’t have to be literal. You can use visual clues that suggest the holidays, like a cone-shaped piece, or spheres, in ceramic or glass,” says Jacqueline, who recommends repeating the recipe of textures, colors, and foliage even in the wrapping of little keepsakes and gifts, to round out your concept.

With ice, in a cocktail, or just neat, you can enjoy all the dimensions of this noble liquor, especially now that today in Puerto Rico, twice the number of whiskeys is arriving as arrived ten years ago.

How to enjoy a single malt? Use a crystal Glencairn glass. Its narrow mouth concentrates the whiskey’s aroma. You don’t need to pour your whiskey into a decanter; it evaporates and loses its body. Whiskey’s main enemy is air. In its well-stoppered original bottle it will last for years and always taste the same. If you want to intensify the flavor of your liquor, pour three drops of water in the glass. The difference, Whiskey Society members assure us, will be considerable.

Los días hábiles, del escritor puertorriqueño, Sergio Gutiérrez Negrón, se ambienta en este entorno de empleo, cuyos trabajadores suelen carecer de experiencia, al igual que quienes los administran, y los clientes se presumen realeza de monarquía. Carla María es la protagonista de esta novela, que se alterna en dos tiempos: un viernes en la tarde de 2005, el día en que los camioneros de Puerto Rico declaran un paro, y algún tiempo más cercano a nuestra realidad, aunque pre-María. Carla atraviesa una crisis existencial luego de dejar a su novio de varios años. Después, acepta un trabajo en una heladería The Creamery, Where Ice Cream Meets Heaven, semejante a heladerías de franquicia estadounidense. Carla decide robar el negocio donde trabaja y fugarse a los montes de Jayuya con los Carlos (dos compañeros que se llaman Carlos) y María C, otra colega. Working in fast-food restaurants can be very tedious. It’s work in which you count the minutes, which can seem like hours, until you’re off work and can finally feel free. Los días hábiles (“Workdays”), by Puerto Rican author Sergio Gutiérrez Negrón, is set in this workplace, whose workers often lack experience, as do the managers, and where customers see themselves as royalty. Carla María is the protagonist of this novel, which alternates between two times: a Friday afternoon in 2005, the day the teamsters in Puerto Rico declare a stoppage, and a time closer to our own, though pre-Hurricane Maria. Carla is going through an existential crisis after breaking up with her boyfriend of several years. She takes a job in a place called The Creamery, Where Ice Cream Meets Heaven, a shop resembling a certain U.S. franchise. She decides to rob the business where she works and run off to the mountains of Jayuya with the Carloses—two guys she works with, both named Carlos—and María C, another ice-cream scooper. In the “present day” of the novel, Carla remembers these events. But most of the novel takes place on the day of the robbery, narrating the events in minute detail. Foto Suministrada

A pesar de relatar las incidencias de un robo, podría decirse que la novela realmente no se trata de ese suceso, sino que intenta exponer la crisis existencial de la protagonista y, a través de ella, toda una generación de millennials boricuas. Es una novela con calidad literaria, muy introspectiva, que retrata el tedio al que se enfrenta toda una clase trabajadora en este país. La trama se mueve a paso lento, en espera de que suceda algo que genere interés, pero que no se da hasta que se llega al final. Al igual que la protagonista, los lectores podrían sentirse decepcionados con la realidad de que, como en la vida misma, aquí nadie gana ni pierde: solo existen. Los que busquen una lectura con situaciones límite deben hacerlo en otras páginas. Es una lectura adecuada para quienes disfrutan de los procesos psicológicos de los personajes y su entorno.

The author depicts a typical day of work in the ice cream shop through incidents that occur there: the customers’ idiosyncrasies, the subculture of working in a mall, and the daily routine of a fast-food operation. All this mixes with the protagonist’s introspections and the thoughts of other characters as we are shown how someone might come to think that stealing $4,000 to divide among four people is a good idea. Despite its narration of the incidents of a robbery, it might be said that the novel is less about that event, but rather more about the portrayal of a young woman’s existential crisis and, through her, the crisis of a whole generation of Puerto Rican millennials. It is a novel of literary quality, very introspective, that paints a picture of the tedium faced by a whole class of working people in this country. The plot moves slowly, and the reader waits for something that generates interest, but that doesn’t happen until the end. Like the protagonist, readers may feel disappointed by the fact that here, as in real life, no one wins or loses: they just exist. Readers looking for adventure should do so elsewhere. This is a read for people who enjoy characters’ psychological processes and the world they live in.

¡Ah, la adolescencia! Esa terrible etapa de la vida en que las hormonas están a flor de piel. Comienza la rebelión contra todo y estás pillado entre la niñez y ser adulto. Si la reencarnación fuese un hecho, apostaría a que hay muchas almas que preferirían no regresar, con tal de no pasar por la pubertad otra vez. La nueva novela de la italiana Elena Ferrante —cuya verdadera identidad es un misterio—, La vida mentirosa de los adultos, explora el tema de la adolescencia a través de su protagonista, la joven Giovanna. La trama se establece en Nápoles, Italia, en lo que podría ser los años setenta u ochenta, aunque no se precisa el tiempo en que sucede. Al comienzo de la novela, Giovanna tiene trece años y escucha una conversación entre sus padres. Estos comentan que la adolescente se parece a su tía Vittoria. Esta hermana de su padre ha sido borrada de la historia familiar: no hay fotos de ella, nunca se menciona y hay evidencia de que su rastro se ha borrado a propósito. La curiosidad de Giovanna se enciende y comienza a buscar pistas acerca de su tía. Eventualmente, convence a sus padres de que la dejen conocerla. Los cambios de humor, los enfrentamientos contra sus padres y cualquier tipo de autoridad, el darse cuenta de que los adultos son seres falibles y el despertar sexual son algunos de los temas que se tocan en la novela. Es una trama que atrapa, aunque deja algunos asuntos sin resolver y su final puede ser demasiado abierto para algunos. No obstante, como dicen, el placer se encuentra en el viaje (en el desarrollo de la historia) y no en el destino (en el final) de esta novela.

Ah, the teenage years! That terrible stage when kids start wearing their hormones on their sleeves. When they rebel against everything and they’re stuck between childhood and adulthood. If reincarnation existed, I’ll bet there are a lot of souls that would prefer not to be reborn, just so they wouldn’t have to go through puberty again. The Lying Life of Adults, the new novel by Italian author Elena Ferrante (whose true identity is a mystery), explores the subject of adolescence through its protagonist, young Giovanna. The story takes place in Naples, Italy, in the seventies or eighties, although we’re never told the exact date. At the beginning of the novel, Giovanna is thirteen and she overhears a conversation between her parents. They’re saying that Giovanna is like her aunt Vittoria. This sister of Giovanna’s father has been expunged from the family history: there are no photos of her, she’s never mentioned, and there’s evidence that her existence has been intentionally erased. Giovanna’s curiosity is piqued, and she starts trying to track down her aunt. Eventually, she convinces her parents to let her meet her. Little by little, she learns more about the family’s history, while at the same time facing the complications of the adults who are part of her life. Although the events of the novel are mundane, Ferrante manages to create an almost noir mystery around Giovanna’s life. Simultaneously, she works with the girl’s growing curiosity and what is, in essence, her passage through puberty. Mood changes, confrontations with her parents and all other kinds of authority, the realization that adults are fallible, and sexual awakening are some of the subjects touched on in the novel. It’s a story that grips the reader, although it leaves some threads dangling and its ending may be too open for some. Still, as they say, the pleasure is in the getting there (the development of the story) and not the destination (the ending) of this novel.

Para que la declaración de voluntad previa tenga validez debe cumplirse una serie de requisitos. Primero, debe contener la declaración de la persona en la que se ordene al médico o al hospital abstenerse de aplicar ciertos tratamientos médicos que pudieran prolongarle la vida. Segundo, debe ser escrita, firmada y juramentada ante un notario público mediante acta o testimonio. Por último, debe hacerse constar la apreciación de la misma por el autenticante y los testigos, así como la fecha, hora y lugar donde se otorga la declaración. Las leyes aplicables también le dan el derecho al declarante a otorgar un mandato o poder duradero a favor de un tercero que le permita a esa persona tomar decisiones con respecto a los asuntos personales del declarante, incluidas las relacionadas con el manejo de su propiedad inmueble, cuando la condición de salud del declarante impide que las tome por si mismo. Las decisiones se tomarán conforme a los valores y creencias del declarante. La alternativa al poder para conseguir la tutela ante los tribunales del país es un proceso engorroso y costoso. En conclusión, las declaraciones de voluntad previa y los poderes duraderos les brindan a los adultos de la tercera edad una herramienta valiosa para manejar su salud, su bienestar y su propiedad de manera efectiva.

Una de ellas es la Red Privada Virtual (RPV, o Virtual Private Network, VPN, por sus siglas en inglés). Many of us have been forced to work from home during the pandemic. That means we’ve had to use our internet connection in order to do our jobs. We’ve done this without considering that we’re exposing our security and privacy even more than we normally do, making us more vulnerable to cyberattacks. Fortunately, tools exist that can help us obtain a secure private connection. One of them is a Virtual Private Network, or VPN. VPN technology was developed mainly for secure remote access to apps and resources within a private corporate or government network. A computer or other mobile device connected to a VPN acts as though it were directly linked to a private network. This connection is secure, and it’s achieved by means of an encrypted layered tunneling protocol which, depending on the implementation, may cause users to go through several methods of authentication before obtaining access to the VPN.
