Cada vez que los rayos de nuestro sol caribeño se suavizan, mi mente cambia a modo de fiesta. ¿Te sucede igual? Yo estoy lista para saturar mi agenda de citas para reír, abrazar, salir a cenar, escuchar música, bailar al ritmo de un buen son, gozarme un jolgorio, escuchar el tintineo de las copas.

Every time our Caribbean sun starts growing softer, my mind switches into party mode. Does this happen to you? I hope so, because in preparation for the season many look forward to —the holidays,— we’ve packed this fall edition with features to help you start planning celebrations with your loved ones. I, for one, am ready to pack my schedule with plans for laughter, hugs, dining out, listening and dancing to good music, enjoying a great shindig, and delighting in the sound of clinking glasses. El florecimiento económico, social, educativo y cultural de nuestro pueblo durante las últimas décadas, de la mano con nuestra reconocida calidad de vida y nuestro plan de desarrollo, Visión Dorado 2025, se ha traducido en proyectos emblemáticos como el Gran Parque Agroturístico, Agrológico y Recreativo, el Complejo Deportivo Edgar Martínez, el moderno Cuartel de la Policía Municipal, la Oficina de Manejo de Emergencias, Mi Escuela Amiga, el sistema de rotondas, el nuevo edificio de oficinas municipales y muchos otros proyectos en campo y pueblo.

Ha sido la hermosa primavera de un pueblo que se atrevió a soñar, a luchar y a triunfar. Como muy bien señalara el escritor francés Albert Camus: “El otoño es una segunda primavera en la que cada hoja es una flor”. De ahí que aprovechemos el comienzo del otoño para anunciar la segunda primavera de la historia doradeña, significada en el nuevo plan de desarrollo Visión Dorado 2035. Nos espera, a tenor con este plan, la inauguración en los próximos años de proyectos como la nueva Casa Alcaldía, la Escuela de Bellas Artes, la Escuela de Deportes, las modernas instalaciones del Head Start, los nuevos museos y la remodelación de nuestra zona cultural, las novedosas rotondas que facilitarán el movimiento vehicular, el programa Dorado Sin Barreras, nuevos paseos lineales, las Siete Maravillas del Paraíso y muchos otros proyectos que mejorarán los servicios a la ciudadanía y reforzarán la imagen positiva de nuestro pueblo.

The economic, social, educational and cultural growth of our town in the last decades, along with our renowned quality of life and development plan, Dorado Vision 2025, has resulted in emblematic projects such as the El Dorado Recreational Ecological Agrotourism Park, the Edgar Martínez Sports Complex, the modern Municipal Police Headquarters, the Emergency Management Office, Mi Escuela Amiga, the traffic circle system, the new municipal office building, and many other projects in both rural and urban areas.

The people who dared to dream, fight, and triumph had a wonderful spring. As the French author Albert Camus once said: “Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.” So let’s take advantage of the beginning of autumn to announce the second spring of our Dorado’s history, which is reflected in the new Dorado Vision 2035 development plan. In line with this plan, we expect the inauguration of several projects in the coming years. These include the new City Hall, the School of Fine Arts, the School of Sports, the new modern Head Start facilities, new museums, and our cultural zone remodeling. Also, the new traffic circles that will ease the flow of vehicles, the “Dorado Without Barriers” program, new linear parks, the Seven Wonders of Paradise, and many other projects that will improve services to citizens and solidify the positive image of our town.

Como cuando le falta azúcar al café, así es la vida cuando estás de espaldas al mundo. Y no me refiero a que debas tener una comparsa constante como compañía; disfruto muchísimo la soledad, pero no es suficiente.

Si algo confirmó la pandemia por COVID-19 es que nos necesitamos; que apartarnos tiene su potencial, pero puede ser aburrido. Siempre será mejor cuando recibes un oportuno texto en momentos de tribulación o cuando tienes a quién contarle el desenlace de una trama dañina de la que saliste bien librada o, quizás, fracasada.

El secreto está en la selección de la compañía. El cantautor Rubén Blades nos enseñó que “familia es familia y cariño es cariño” y no se equivoca. Los tuyos están para velar tu bienestar hoy y para recordar –con incomparable nostalgia–, esos momentos formativos del pasado. Do you know that feeling when your coffee is short on sugar? That’s what life is like when you turn your back on the world. That’s not to say you need to be constantly surrounded by a posse. I very much enjoy solitude, but that’s not enough.

If the COVID-19 pandemic has taught us anything, it’s that we need each other. Spending time apart has its merits, but it can get boring. Things are always better when you receive a well-timed text in moments of hardship, or when you have a friendly ear to share the outcome of a nefarious plot from which you emerged unscathed, or perhaps, defeated.

The secret lies in the company we keep. Singer-songwriter Rubén Blades taught us that “family is family, and love is love,” and he’s right! Your people are there to look out for your well-being and to reminisce –with unparalleled nostalgia– about those formative moments

Warning: Don’t waste time on friendships with people who never return the favor. There are already enough deep-seated inequalities in this life to add more. (Cheers to all those who do want to be friends!)

Coming together to create new memories is always the best. If you love the idea of sitting around a table with your favorite people but lack confidence in your culinary skills, delegate the task —or take it on with the firm belief that anyone can successfully prepare a dish by following a recipe to the letter. El regreso a clases puede ser tan emocionante como estresante para las familias. Tener que acoplarse a nuevos comienzos, o el simple hecho de tener que volver a caer en tiempo y establecer una rutina, pone a cualquiera con los nervios de puntas. Estos y otros factores afectan en mayor magnitud a las familias con estudiantes neurodivergentes. Es decir, estudiantes que tienen variaciones cognitivas, como lo son el autismo, el déficit de atención (TDAH) o la dislexia, entre otras.

Por ejemplo, a un estudiante autista se le puede hacer más difícil el regreso a clases, luego de un verano; esto significa acoplarse a maestros, a los cursos o compañeros nuevos, a salones distintos y a los cambios de rutinas. Asimismo, tener que volver a ajustarse a una rutina rígida, manejar las transiciones entre clases, organizar y planificar las tareas puede representar un desafío para aquellos estudiantes con déficit de atención. Leer en voz alta en un salón con extraños puede causar inquietud a aquellos estudiantes disléxicos. Igualmente, los padres tienen responsabilidades adi-

Back to School: Tips for Neurodivergent Families

Back-to-school season can be both exciting and stressful for families. Adjusting to new beginnings or simply getting back into a routine can be nerve-wracking for anyone. These and other factors disproportionately affect the families of neurodivergent students. This includes students with cognitive variations like autism, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or dyslexia, among others.

For example, the return to school can be difficult for students with autism, as it involves adapting to new teachers, classes, and classmates, and to different classrooms and routines. Students with ADHD may also find it challenging to readjust to strict routines and transitions between classes, or to organize and plan their assignments. Reading aloud to a classroom full of strangers can be daunting for students with dyslexia. Parents also have additional respon-

cionales, como tener que revisar los acomodos, abogar por sus hijos y prepararlos para el año escolar. Precisamente para manejar esta transición, aquí les dejo unos consejos.

Adoptar una mentalidad neuroafirmativa. Esto significa entender que cada persona tiene un modo distinto de interactuar con su entorno y aceptar las diferencias en vez de verlas como déficits. A partir de esto, nos enfocamos en las fortalezas del estudiante y las utilizamos al momento de desarrollar estrategias que lo ayuden durante el nuevo año escolar. Finalmente, reflexionamos en cómo el entorno afecta al estudiante y lo modificamos de ser necesario.

Mantener la comunicación abierta. Incluir al estudiante en el proceso y explicarle lo que sucede. Reflexionen como familia sobre qué cosas fueron de ayuda durante el año escolar pasado y qué cosas se pueden modificar. Si aún no han hablado sobre su diagnóstico, la mentalidad neuroafirmativa provee un modo de hablar sobre el tema con un enfoque positivo. La realidad es que los niños perciben cuando algo está sucediendo. La comunicación abierta permite normalizar el proceso, los ayuda a entender que no hay nada malo con ellos, promueve la autonomía y la autoabogacía.

Construir una red de apoyo. Toquen base con la red de apoyo; aquellos consejeros, maestras, especialistas, coaches o familiares, entre otros, que están pendiente y forman parte de la vida del estudiante.

Desarrollar una rutina. Para minimizar los nervios relacionados al cambio y las transiciones, desarrollen una rutina. Utilicen imágenes, cronómetros, colores, en fin, una rutina que sea llamativa. Practíquenla antes del regreso a la escuela.

Aliviar la carga. Eviten sobrecargar los días con muchas actividades. Provean tiempo y espacio para relajarse y conectar al final del día. Tengan fidgets, auriculares u otros apoyos al alcance.

Celebrar los éxitos. Tomen el tiempo de celebrar los éxitos del año escolar anterior y el verano que está por culminar. Identifiquen y documenten experiencias o logros específicos en los que hayan sentido satisfacción personal. Pueden escribirlos en una agenda, utilizar fotos, música, videos. La idea es recordar las fortalezas con ejemplos concretos y sacarlos a la superficie para comenzar con entusiasmo el año escolar.

Adopt a neurodiversity-affirming mindset. This involves understanding that everyone interacts with their environment in a different way and accepting these differences rather than seeing them as obstacles. The focus is placed on the student’s strengths, which can be used to develop strategies for them to tackle the new school year. Lastly, consider the environment’s impact on the student and modify it, if necessary.

Keep an open communication. Involve the student in the process and explain what is going on. As a family, reflect on which strategies worked in the past and what can be modified. If you haven’t discussed their diagnosis yet, a neurodiversity-affirming mindset may provide a positive approach to the conversation. The truth is that children can sense when something is wrong. An open communication can normalize the process and help them understand there is nothing wrong with them, while fostering autonomy and self-advocacy.

Build a support system. Reach out to your support network: counselors, teachers, specialists, coaches, or relatives, among others, who are involved in the student’s life.

Create a roster. Creating a daily roster of tasks could minimize the stress over changes and transitions. Use images, timers, colors... In short, anything to make the roster attractive. Practice it before school starts.

Ease the burden. Avoid overloading their days with activities. Set a time and space to relax and unwind at the end of the day. Have fidget toys, headphones, and other tools on hand.

Celebrate achievements. Take time to celebrate the successes of the previous school year and the summer that is about to end. Identify and document specific experiences and milestones where the student has felt accomplished. You can write them down in a journal and use pictures, music, and videos. The idea is to remind them of their strengths through concrete examples and to get them excited about the new school year.

Las cejas: el marco del rostro

Las hemos visto arqueadas y delineadas con carbón, al estilo de Cleopatra. Finitas y definidas, a lo Marlene Dietrich en los años 30. O pobladas, como las de Brooke Shields en los 80. En mis años de escuela secundaria, en los 90, la moda era llevarlas delgadas.

De cualquier forma que se usen, ya sea como lo dicta la moda o por el gusto de cada cual, no hay duda de que las cejas son el marco del rostro. Y en los últimos años el mercado de la belleza y las redes sociales les han dado mayor protagonismo que nunca.

Agraciadamente, hoy día existe una gran variedad de productos y establecimientos de belleza especializados en cejas para lograr ese enfoque central. Uno de esos lugares es Brows & Co. propiedad de Frances Quiñones.

La experta explica que llevar las cejas de manera natural es la nueva tendencia y, es sabido, que lo natural nunca pasa de moda. Sin embargo, Frances añade que para quienes deseen aventurarse hay tendencias audaces que incluyen cejas texturizadas, cejas pintadas con tintes llamativos y coloridos, cejas plumosas o cejas bien afinadas.

Pero antes de escoger el estilo de cejas que nos gustaría lucir, debemos saber su función primordial: evitar que la humedad, principalmente el sudor, fluya hacia los ojos. De igual forma, las cejas son un medio de comunicación no verbal, capaces de una amplia gama de movimientos que muestran desde felicidad hasta enojo. Por esto es ideal que cuando escojas cómo quieres exhibirlas, recuerdes que es mejor hacerlo según el contorno de tu rostro.

En manos expertas

Mis cejas tienen buena forma y son bastante pobladas. Les he dado forma usando cera y pinzas durante más de 30 años, pero hace tiempo que no visitaba a un profesional para arreglármelas. Hice una cita y visité el Benefit Cosmetics BrowBar en Macy’s de Plaza Las Américas. Allí la consultora de cejas me las depiló, definió y me recomendó un producto para darles volumen, perfecto para utilizarlo a diario.

En mi caso no he necesitado tratamientos más invasivos, pero hay personas que tienen espacios sin vellos o no saben cómo darles forma. Frances menciona que en su salón el primer paso es hacer una evaluación de las cejas naturales para darle la mejor recomendación de técnica que le favorece a la persona.

Según la experta, de las distintas técnicas que ofrece la de mayor demanda es la de Microblading 3D. Sin embargo, aclara, las cejas de cada persona son únicas, “tú eres tú”, por lo que es importante una evaluación inicial para luego decidir el procedimiento más adecuado.

But before we decide how we want to style our eyebrows, we should learn about their primary function: to keep moisture, and especially sweat, from running into our eyes. Eyebrows also play a role in body language. With a wide range of movement, they can express everything from joy to anger. In expert hands

My eyebrows have a nice shape and are quite thick. I’ve been waxing and tweezing them for over 30 years, but it’s been a while since I got them professionally cared for. I made an appointment to visit the Benefit BrowBar at Macy’s in Plaza Las Américas. The beauty advisor waxed and defined my eyebrows and recommended a volumizing product that would be perfect for everyday use.

I haven’t required more invasive procedures, but some people have bare patches or do not know how to shape their brows. One solution is to visit specialized centers equipped with certified technicians and all the state-mandated permits. Frances explains that in her salon, the first step is to assess the client’s natural brows in order to recommend the most suitable technique for them.

According to the expert, out of all the treatments she provides, the one most in demand is 3D Microblading. However, she emphasizes that each person’s eyebrows are unique, “you are you.” That is why the initial evaluation is important to determine the most suitable procedure.

Guapa y jovial, así es la doctora Carmen Auger Cabrera, de 86 años, madre de 5 y abuela de 8.

An Extraordinary Grandmother

Dialogar con ella es una delicia. Con su sonrisa y presencia ilumina cada espacio. Además, es una mujer sabia. Utiliza sus experiencias de vida y conocimientos como psicóloga clínica y trabajadora social para modelar con su ejemplo a sus hijos, nietos y exestudiantes universitarios. También ha apoyado a las sobrevivientes de violencia doméstica, como fundadora e integrante, por años, de la junta de directores del Hogar Ruth para Mujeres Maltratadas.

She is a beauty full of joy. At 86 years young, Dr. Carmen Auger Cabrera is a mother of 5 and grandmother of 8.

Talking to her is a real treat: her smile and presence brighten any space. Besides, she is a wise woman. She uses her experiences and insight as a clinical psychologist and social worker to lead by example in the lives of her children, grandchildren, and former students. She has also supported domestic violence survivors as founder and long-standing directive board member of Hogar Ruth para Mujeres Maltratadas.

Carmen no es una abuela convencional. Fue trabajadora social en el Departamento de Servicios Sociales (hoy Departamento de la Familia). Luego, hizo una pausa para cuidar a sus 5 hijos. Pero, a los 50 años comenzó a estudiar su doctorado en psicología clínica. De hecho, lo hizo a la vez que su hija, la también psicóloga clínica Ivette Navas. Una vez concluidos sus estudios, se convirtió en catedrática de la Universidad Carlos Albizu en San Juan.

“Cuando me retiré me dieron el grado de profesora emérita de la Universidad Carlos Albizu. Un reconocimiento que llevo con gran responsabilidad”, dice orgullosa.

Una abuela divertida

“Actualmente estoy en mi casita, pero continúo participando en varias actividades. Soy parte de un grupo de lectura que se fundó hace más de 40 años, en donde participamos amigas. Leemos un libro al mes y lo discutimos entre nosotras”, explica entusiasmada.

Comenta además que hasta hace un año fue parte de la Junta de Directores del Hogar Ruth. “Fui vicepresidenta de la Junta por muchos años. Pero me retiré porque no podía viajar tanto, tenía que coger un respiro y dejar el camino para otros que pudieran traer ideas renovadas”, dice con sabiduría.

Carmen is not your typical grandmother. She started out as a social worker at the Department of Social Services (now the Department of Family Affairs.) Then, she took time off to take care of her 5 children. But, at the age of 50, she decided to pursue a doctorate in clinical psychology. In fact, she completed her studies at the same time as her daughter Ivette Navas, who is also a clinical psychologist. After earning her degree, she became a professor at Carlos Albizu University in San Juan.

“When I retired, I was granted the title of emeritus professor at Carlos Albizu University. It’s a distinction I bear with a great sense of responsibility,” she said proudly.

A Fun Grandma

“Right now, I’m staying home, but I still participate in different activities,” Carmen explained with delight. “I belong to a book club that was founded over 40 years ago, and we’re all friends. We read one book a month and discuss it together.”

She also revealed that, up until a year ago, she was part of the Hogar Ruth directive board. “I served as vice president for many years. But I stepped down because I couldn’t travel as often. I needed to take a breather and step aside so that new talent could take over and offer new perspectives,” she mused.

Con una familia tan numerosa siempre hay un cumpleaños que celebrar. Además, durante las navidades su casa se convierte en el centro de la fiesta.

Cuando sus nietos eran pequeños disfrutaba de organizar el nacimiento viviente; y con 8 nietos, siempre había un chiquillo que podía interpretar al niñito Jesús. Luego otros peques de la familia han ocupado ese lugar.

Pilar de su familia

“Me siento dichosa de la vida que tengo porque, en diferentes etapas, he podido aprender y crecer; especialmente en mi relación de pareja y con mis hijos, quienes han sido maravillosos. Cada uno es muy responsable. Están centrados en sus trabajos y familia, lo que nos llena de gran alegría. Mi esposo y yo sentimos que hemos sembrado y la semilla ha germinado. Son personas que tienen su vocación de servir a los demás”, comenta feliz sobre la vida que comparte junto al ingeniero William Navas Dávila.

“Abuelita” o “Tata”, como le llaman sus nietos, recuerda que su familia y la de su esposo se conocían de siempre, como era tan común en los pueblos pequeños. Se criaron en Vega Alta y fueron a la misma escuela elemental.

With such a big family, there’s always a birthday party, and for the holiday festivities, her home takes center stage.

She loved planning living nativity scenes with her grandchildren when they were younger, and with 8 grandchildren in tow, there was always an infant to play baby Jesus. As they grew, other babies in the family have taken that place.

The Pillar of the Family

“I feel blessed with my life because I’ve been able to learn and grow through different stages, especially with my marriage and my children, who have been wonderful. They’re all very responsible, focused on their careers and families, which fills us with joy. My husband and I feel that we’ve reaped the fruit of our labor. Our children have a calling to serve others,” she said happily about her life with her husband, engineer William Navas Dávila.

“Abuelita” or “Tata,” as her grandchildren call her, recalls that her and her husband’s families had always known each other, as was typical in small towns. They both grew up in Vega Alta and went to the same elementary school.

“We started seeing each other when we were 14. He studied engineering in Mayagüez, and I studied at the University of Puerto Rico in Río Piedras. We dated over the summers. Once summer was over, we would go our separate ways,” Carmen explained with a playful giggle as her husband watched.

De generación en generación

Carmen vive orgullosa de la crianza que recibió y de lo cercana que era a sus abuelos y tíos. Su mamá fue trabajadora social y sus tías maestras de escuela pública. De ellas aprendió: “lo que es servir a la comunidad con el propósito de vivir en una mejor sociedad”.

Hoy Carmen reside en Dorado, cerca de 3 de sus hijas, y a pasos de la escuela en donde estudiaron algunos de sus nietos. La mayoría ya son estudiantes universitarios, por lo que los ve cada verano y Navidad, cuando vienen de visita.

“Hay alegría cuando nos vemos. Entiendo que (William y yo) hemos cumplido nuestra tarea. Nos ocupamos los unos de los otros… Es de las cosas que más valoro. Varias veces he tratado de escribir un libro sobre nuestra crianza y cómo, generacionalmente, hemos transmitido lo que vivimos. Tener esa experiencia de (criarnos en un) pueblo pequeño y contar con una familia tan maravillosa como la que tenemos es extraordinario”, expresa complacida sobre su rol como madre y abuela.

He is her confidant and bookkeeper who helps her confirm the dates of the important events in her life.

From One Generation to the Next Carmen is proud of her upbringing and how close she was to her uncles and grandparents. Her mother was a social worker, and her aunts were public school teachers. They all taught her the meaning of “serving the community in order to improve our society.”

Currently, Carmen lives in Dorado, close to 3 of her daughters and just steps away from her grandchildren’s old school. Most of them are already in college, but she gets to see them when they visit during summer and the holidays.

“We all rejoice when we see each other. I think we (William and I) have done our job,” Carmen remarks, satisfied with her role as a mother and grandmother. “We take care of each other. It’s one of the things I value the most. I have tried writing a book about our upbringing and how we’ve transmitted our life experiences from one generation to the next. Being from a small town and having such a wonderful family is truly extraordinary.”

Néstor Manuel Méndez Gómez es un abuelo cool. En la sala de su hogar, que comparte con su esposa Nellie, exhibe orgulloso los álbumes con fotos de unas vacaciones junto a sus dos nietos: Gustavo, de 18, y Gonzalo de 16. ¿El destino? ¡Antártica!

A este abuelo le encanta viajar. Por ejemplo, ha hecho el Camino de Santiago 15 veces. La mayoría de las veces solo, otras en familia y hasta con la única compañía de sus nietos. “El bonding de ir solo con ellos, sin los papás, es otra cosa”, dice. Además de la ruta peregrina ha disfrutado de despedidas de año familiares, con sus nietos incluidos, en Italia.

Es muy común que los domingos, a menos que esté de viaje, sus hijas en la isla (Carla y Camelia) lo visiten. Mientras que las que viven en Estados Unidos (Claudia y Carolina) toman ese día para llamarlo.

“Yo trato de hacer uno o dos viajes al año, todos en familia. A las que están fuera las visitamos. El verano pasado me llevé a casi toda la familia, menos a Claudia (que no pudo por su trabajo), a celebrar nuestro 50 aniversario de bodas a Alemania”, comenta vivaracho el abuelo de 75 años.

Néstor Manuel Méndez Gómez is a cool grandpa. He sits in the living room of the home he shares with his wife, Nellie, and proudly shows the photo albums of a vacation he spent with his two grandkids, Gustavo, who is 18, and Gonzalo, 16. The destination? Antarctica!

This grandpa loves to travel. For instance, he’s walked the Way of St. James —known in Spanish as “Camino de Santiago”— 15 times, most of them alone and others, with his family or even in the exclusive company of his grandchildren. “The bonding that happens when it’s just them, without their parents, is something else,” he says. Aside from this pilgrimage, he has traveled to Italy several times to celebrate New Year’s Eve with his family —grandkids included.

Unless he’s traveling, his daughters in the island (Carla and Camelia) usually visit him on Sunday. Meanwhile, Claudia and Carolina, who live in the United States, take that day to call him.

“I try to make one or two family trips a year. We visit the ones living abroad. Last summer, I flew most of the family —except Claudia, who had to work— to Germany to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary,” the 75-year-old grandfather says gleefully.

DE AVENTURAS CON BELO

Cuando sus nietos eran pequeños, Néstor no trabajaba los miércoles. Ese era el día de cuidar a los nietos; pero nada de mantenerlos en la casa, los llevaba a la playa o a correr bicicleta. En fin, “a experimentar aventuras con ‘Belo’”, dice mientras rememora y añade: “Yo no quería que me dijeran abuelo porque me iban a hacer sentir viejo. Pero, Belo, también quiere decir lindo en italiano. ¡Bello, Bello!”, exclama a carcajadas.

“Desde que nació el primero, me han ayudado a ser… y así dejo de hacer. La gente dice que los nietos son el postre de la vida y que traen alegría después de momentos difíciles. Pero yo digo que son la fuente de la juventud, porque vives con ellos ese sentido de inocencia, de optimismo y, sobretodo, de estar presente en vez de pensar en lo que pasó o lo que voy a hacer”, manifiesta convencido el abogado y presidente de la Fundación del Tribunal Supremo de Puerto Rico.

Recuerda, por ejemplo, cómo su nieto Gonzalo miró al infinito durante el viaje a la Antártica y exclamó: “¡qué chiquitos somos!”.

that Néstor is very active. Aside from traveling, he has completed two triathlons, is an excellent swimmer, and enjoys writing and singing. In fact, Néstor is writing a historical novel named La casa de mi abuelo (“My Grandfather’s House”), weaving his memories of Puerto Rico with his maternal grandfather’s life story. His earliest childhood memories are of his grandparents’ home.

ADVENTURES WITH BELO

When his grandchildren were younger, Néstor didn’t go to work on Wednesdays. That was the day to take care of the grandkids. But he didn’t keep them indoors; he took them to the beach or for bike rides. In short, “Going on adventures with ‘Belo’,” he reminisces, and adds, “I didn’t want to be called ‘Grandpa’ because it would’ve made me feel old. But Belo also means ‘beautiful’ in Italian. Bello, Bello!” he bursts out laughing.

“Since the eldest was born, they’ve helped me just be... so I can stop doing. People say grandkids are the dessert of life, bringing joy after difficult times. But I say they’re the fountain of youth: you share with them that sense of innocence, optimism and, above all, being present instead of thinking about what happened or what you’re going to do next,” the lawyer, who is also president of Fundación del Tribunal Supremo de Puerto Rico, states with conviction.

He recalls, by way of example, how his grandson Gonzalo gazed into infinity during their trip to Antarc-

Néstor es un hombre dinámico. Cada mañana, después de tomarse el café, organiza su vida y trabajo. Tiene una lista de cosas por hacer que va tachando según pasa el día. Coordina conversatorios para la Fundación del Tribunal Supremo, dos o tres veces a la semana tiene almuerzos de trabajo y una vez al mes almuerza con amigos de sus años en la escuela superior. Trata de ir a todos los juegos de sus nietos. Además, es muy organizado y amante de las carpetas: tiene carpetas de trabajo, otras sobre los proyectos del hogar, de las finanzas familiares y, claro, ¡carpetas en donde organiza sus viajes!

UN ABUELO SABIO

Hace años Néstor estuvo en un retiro con Deepak Chopra, lo que le permite tener con sus nietos conversaciones sobre preguntas valiosas como “¿quién soy?, ¿qué es lo que quiero?, ¿cuál es mi propósito de vida?, ¿cómo puedo servir?” “Todo esto lo empecé a entender a mis sesenta años”, dice con honestidad.

We humans lose our sensitivity to protect ourselves. But children still have that connection, which is why I love to travel with my grandkids,” he says proudly.

Néstor is an energetic man. Every morning, after having his coffee, he gets his daily life and work organized. He has a list of to-dos that he checks off throughout the day. He coordinates talks for Fundación del Tribunal Supremo, goes on work lunches twice or thrice a week, and meets his high school buddies for lunch once a month. He tries to go to all of his grandkids’ games. He’s also very organized and loves binders: he has binders for work, for home projects, family finances, and of course, for organizing his trips!

A WISE GRANDPA

Néstor went on a retreat with Deepak Chopra years ago, which allows him to have conversations with his grandkids about meaningful questions such as Who am I? What do I want? What is my purpose in life? How can I serve? “I started understanding all of this in my 60s,” he candidly asserts.

¿Unos simples peldaños para subir y bajar? Nada más lejos de la verdad. Las escaleras de tu casa, exteriores e interiores, ofrecen oportunidades de diseño y estilo que tal vez no imaginas.

“Las primeras escaleras en la arquitectura surgieron en las civilizaciones antiguas. Se utilizaban principalmente para acceder a espacios elevados y grandiosos, como templos, palacios y fortalezas”, plantea el tema la joven arquitecta Brenda García Sosa, principal de la firma Architectural Studio, PSC y de The Portfolio Project.

Entonces, si se piensa bien, desde su origen estas estructuras tienen un propósito divino: llegar a lo alto, acceder al poder. Con el pasar de la historia, los arquitectos se las ingeniaron para con ellas crear propuestas únicas y darles la oportunidad a las personas de descubrir nuevos ángulos y percibir los espacios de una manera distinta. Si no te habías planteado todo esto, pierdes de vista el potencial de la escalera.

Just a few simple steps to go up and down? Nothing could be further from the truth. The stairs in your home, both exterior and interior, can offer unexpected design and styling opportunities.

“The first staircases in the history of architecture were designed by ancient civilizations. They were primarily used to access lofty and magnificent spaces, such as temples, palaces, and fortresses,” says young architect Brenda García Sosa, principal of Architectural Studio, PSC and of The Portfolio Project.

Hoy día, añade esta egresada del Pratt Institute en Brooklyn, Nueva York, “la escalera de la entrada cumple con la misma función de poder trasladarse de un nivel a otro, pero con el tiempo y las tradiciones se convierte en un punto de encuentro”.

García Sosa la propone desde muchas e interesantes perspectivas. El gathering place. El espacio donde con calma se recibe a los amigos y familiares. Incluso un lugar que sirve hasta para sentarte. Y más.

Construye la entrada del triunfo

Primero, hay que pisar seguro. Para la entrada principal de una residencia la recomendación de la experta es que la profundidad de la huella, es decir, donde se pisa, sea como mínimo de 12 pulgadas. Y la contrahuella, que es la parte vertical de cada escalón, sea de 6 pulgadas. “El ancho del escalón varía según el diseño, pero no debe ser menos de 36 pulgadas”, exhorta la afiliada al Colegio de Arquitectos y Arquitectos Paisajistas de Puerto Rico y a otras entidades a nivel de los Estados Unidos.

“Existen muchas opciones y diferentes materiales que se pueden utilizar. La escalera de hormigón sin duda es la más duradera y la más popular. Importante: no debe ser pulido para evitar resbalones. Hoy día la losa de cerámica o porcelanato para exterior tiene una gama muy amplia de colores y texturas a escoger. Algunas imitan madera, otras hormigón pulido y piedra natural. Pero, lo más importante es que al momento de seleccionarla sea de exterior y antideslizante o slip resistant”.

Las interiores

Para llegar de un piso al otro de la casa, por dentro, hay otras fórmulas de diseño y de estilo, claro está.

“Los tipos más comunes para interior de residencia son las escaleras rectas. Yo digo que pueden ser de un tramo, o de dos tramos. Y están las escaleras curvas o las de espiral, las escaleras flotantes y las que son mixtas”, anota la líder de esta corporación establecida en San Juan.

Aquí te luces con los pasamanos que pueden ser en acero, en vidrio, en aluminio o en una mezcla de ambos. Tanto los arquitectos como los diseñadores industriales pueden crear un concepto que consolide el espacio o que, por el contrario, cree un wao effect. Es cuestión de decidir.

Building a Triumphant Entrance

Modern ceramic or porcelain tiles for exteriors come in a very wide selection of colors and textures. They can be designed to imitate wood, polished concrete, or natural stone. But, the most important factor in your tile selection is to make sure it is slip resistant and made for exteriors.”

Trends include wide offset steps, which seem to float and include greenery and/or stones in between, as well as lighting, planters attached to each step for an extra dose of drama, water elements like fountains and ponds, and even benches built into every step. It all depends on the space available and the size of your home.

Interiors

The designs and styles for staircases inside the home are different, of course.

“The most common type for home interiors is the straight staircase. I would say they can have one flight or two. And we have circular or spiral staircases, floating stairs, and mixed styles,” the leader of this San Juan enterprise points out.

This is where you get to show off with handrails made of steel, glass, aluminum, or a combination of these. Both architects and industrial designers can create solutions that will tie the space together or generate a wow. It’s just a matter of choice.

En modo laid-back

La chef nativa de San Juan, Ana Ortiz, lleva cinco años coordinando –y cocinando– para celebraciones pequeñas en Nueva York, donde reside, y aquí en la isla.

“Trabajo las celebraciones tipo happy-fun vibe. No se supone que las fiestas sean serias y por eso me gusta darles un poco de liviandad”, detalla quien antes fuera chef de repostería en la Gran Manzana.

Chef Ana Ortiz, a native of San Juan, has been planning and cooking for small gatherings for five years in the island and in New York, where she currently resides.

“I usually plan parties that have happy-fun vibes. Parties aren’t meant to be taken too seriously, and that’s why I like to add lightness to them,” explains Ortiz, who used to be a baker in NYC.

“Me encanta colocar bowls con olive oil potato chips españolas. Y recuerdo la vez que forré una mesa con papel de carnicería para crear una tabla de charcutería gigante. Sugiero preparar cocteles por cantidades: una superjarra de Cosmopolitan, o de Manhattan. Que cada cual se sirva. Simpleza es sinónimo de seguridad en uno mismo”.

Una mesa de familia

“A mí me gustan las cenas family style, con un ambiente relajado, sin bandejas pasando, interrumpiendo a los invitados. Por cada cuatro personas, tener un plato para compartir. Me encantan las velas, amo las flores baby breath y decorar con clementinas. Y nada de plástico; manteles y servilletas en tela y buenos platos y cubiertos”.

My favorite menu, which I tailor to each season, includes: a green salad with lots of herbs and dressing, burrata, a beef or fish fillet, vegetables, and pasta. I also prep some of my brown butter to use in dressings, pasta sauces, or desserts.”

“I love setting up appetizer bowls with Spanish olive oil potato chips. I also remember one time I wrapped a table in butcher paper to create a giant charcuterie board. I suggest prepping cocktail pitchers: for example, a big pitcher of Cosmopolitan or Manhattan. The guests can fill their own glasses. Simplicity is confidence in oneself.”

“I like family-style dinners, with a relaxed atmosphere, and no trays interrupting the guests. For every four people, have one plate for sharing. Party Prepping 101

May the food, drinks, and water never run out. That’s the golden —and unbreakable— rule. Fortunately for you, there are many of ways to calculate what you’ll need.

Nérida Álvarez and Ana Ortiz both agree that it will all depend on your crowd. They recommend a careful analysis of the composition and tastes of your group of guests. If you know your guests well, the rest will come easy.

As for the hors d’oeuvres, if you’re serving dinner, Nérida suggests about five portions per person. However, if you’re serving a family-style dinner, Ana —who is Day Into Night’s chef— recommends preparing one large serving plate for every four guests.

There are plenty of online tools to calculate drink quantities, such as Omni Calculator. Another source that provides a fairly comprehensive guide is The Spruce. Just keep in mind that event coordinators don’t rely 100% on these calculators, but they are a good starting point. You can also ask for advice at wine shops and liquor stores, where they will gladly assist you.

Salata De Vinete

Esta receta es nuestra versión de un plato rumano –sí, de Rumania– y la berenjena asada es protagonista. Su preparación nos brinda la oportunidad de pasar un ratito agradable en la cocina ya sea solos o acompañados. ¡Atrévete!

Ingredientes:

- 4 berenjenas medianas

- ½ cebolla vidalia o blanca

- 1 a 2 dientes de ajo

- 3 cucharadas de mayonesa

- 1 cucharadita de sal kosher (ajustar al final al gusto)

- ½ cucharadita de pimienta (usa ahumada si decides hornear las berenjenas)

- 2 cucharaditas de paprika (opcional)

Procedimiento:

Cocina las berenjenas directamente sobre fuego, ya sea sobre la hornilla de tu estufa o en tu barbacoa. Si no tienes acceso a una llama viva puedes hornearlas, sin embargo, perderás el sabor ahumado que aporta el fuego. Una vez las berenjenas estén listas retíralas del fuego. Sabrás que las berenjenas están listas para retirarlas del fuego cuando adquieran un aspecto a “quemado” y comiencen a colapsar un poco. Con mucho cuidado (recuerda que están calientes) quita la cascara de cada una de ellas. Deposita las berenjenas rostizadas en un recipiente lo suficientemente cómodo como para mezclarlas con el resto de los ingredientes. Una vez tengas las berenjenas cocidas y peladas vertidas en un recipiente, añade la sal, la mayonesa y la pimienta. Rálla le la cebolla y el ajo crudo (puedes usar un rallador de queso), y con un tenedor o un majador de papas, mezcla hasta que que de como un spread o dip. Ajusta la sal si es necesario. Cuando la sirvas añade un poco de paprika.

This recipe is our version of a Romanian dish –yes, you read it right, from Romania– that uses roasted eggplant as the main ingredient. Preparing it will allow you to spend some quality time in the kitchen, by yourself or with others. Try it!

Ingredients:

- 4 medium eggplants

- ½ Vidalia or white onion

- 1 to 2 garlic cloves

- 3 tbsp mayonnaise

- 1 tsp kosher salt (adjust to taste at the end)

- ½ tsp pepper (use smoked if you bake the eggplants)

- 2 tsp paprika (optional)

Preparation:

Cook the eggplants directly over the fire, either on your stove burner or on your grill. If you don’t have access to an open flame you can bake them; however, you won’t get that smoky flavor from the fire. Once the eggplants are cooked, remove them from the heat. You’ll know the eggplants are ready when they look “burnt” and start to collapse. Carefully (remember they are hot) remove the skin from each eggplant. Place the roasted eggplants in a large bowl where you can easily mix them with the rest of the ingredients. Once you have the peeled eggplants in a bowl, add the salt, pepper, and mayonnaise. Grate the onion and raw garlic (you can use a cheese grater), add them, and use a fork or potato masher to mix everything until you achieve a spread or dip consistency. Add more salt if necessary. When serving, sprinkle with paprika.

Ingredientes para 8 panes:

2 tazas de harina de trigo

4 oz de agua

3 cucharaditas de aceite de oliva

2 cucharaditas de polvo para hornear

1 cucharadita de sal (ajustar al gusto)

Procedimiento:

En un envase coloca la harina, el polvo para hornear y la sal. Mezcla hasta incorporarlo todo. Luego, añade el agua, el aceite de oliva y vuelve a mezclar todos los ingredientes. Coloca la masa sobre una mesa o superficie y amasa hasta obtener una masa lisa, uniforme y firme. Forma un rollo con la masa y divídela en 8 partes iguales. Forma una “bola” con cada parte y colócalas sobre una bandeja. Tapa la bandeja con algún paño y deja reposar la masa por 20 minutos. Esparce harina sobre la mesa o superficie y dale forma de panqueque a cada bolita utilizando un rodillo, una botella de vino o tus manos. Luego, calienta una sartén a fuego mediano con un poco de aceite de oliva. Una vez caliente, cocina cada tortita de forma individual (1 minuto por cada lado, aproximadamente). Deben formarse burbujas en la masa, si no ocurre, aumenta un poco más la temperatura de la sartén. Retira el pan de la sartén. Si no lo vas a consumir inmediatamente cúbrelo con un paño húmedo o guárdalo en algún recipiente con tapa.

¡Que lo disfrutes!

Ingredients for 8 loaves:

2 cups wheat flour

4 oz water

3 tsp olive oil

2 tsp baking powder

1 tsp salt (adjust to taste)

Preparation:

In a bowl, place the flour, baking powder, and salt. Mix until everything is incorporated. Add the water and olive oil, and mix again. Place the dough on a table and kneed it until you get a smooth, uniform, and firm dough. Form a roll with the dough and divide it into 8 equal parts. Shape each part into a ball and place them on a tray. Cover the dough with a cloth and let it rest for 20 minutes. Spread flour on the table and flatten each ball into a pancake form using a rolling pin, a wine bottle, or even your hands. Then, place a pan over medium heat and add a bit of olive oil. Once hot, cook each bread individually (about 1 minute on each side). Bubbles should form in the dough, if not, increase the temperature of the pan a little more. Remove the bread from the pan. If you’re not going to eat it immediately, cover it with a damp cloth or store it in an airtight container. Enjoy!

40años de historia y sabor La Terraza se renueva

Por 40 años La Terraza ha sido el punto de encuentro de muchos doradeños, quienes han celebrado allí cumpleaños y reuniones con amigos. Mientras, los turistas llegan al restaurante al enterarse de que allí conseguirán los mejores pescados y mariscos en la zona.

Su ubicación es privilegiada: en la marginal Costa de Oro, en la carretera 693 en Dorado. Tanto su salón comedor principal (en el primer nivel), como el segundo piso con su lounge bajo la sombra de árboles, tienen un ambiente moderno y relajado, donde la brisa marina es protagonista.

La Terraza fue el sueño hecho realidad de Luis Corretjer, hoy de 73 años. Con sus manos, el empresario y amante de la pesca construyó el deck de madera del salón comedor original. Con la más reciente reconstrucción, La Terraza estrena piso, mesas, barra, escalera y pérgolas que se pueden abrir y cerrar, según la necesidad. Sin embargo, algunos elementos, como las barandas de madera, siguen allí como testigos de las transformaciones a través de las décadas.

40 Years of History and Flavor: La Terraza Is Reborn

For 40 years, La Terraza has been the meeting point for many Dorado residents to celebrate birthdays, get-togethers, and many other special occasions. Meanwhile, tourists flock to the restaurant upon learning that this is the place to get the best fish and seafood in the area.

It occupies prime real estate on the Costa de Oro frontage road, off PR-693, in Dorado. Both the main dining area (on the first level) and the tree-shaded lounge on the second floor boast a modern and relaxed ambience where the sea breeze takes center stage.

La Terraza was the realization of Luis Corretjer’s dream. This fishing enthusiast and entrepreneur, who is now 73 years old, built the wooden deck of the original dining area himself. Now, after its most recent renovation, La Terraza has brand new floors, tables, bar, stairs, and pergolas that can be opened and closed as needed. However, certain elements —like the wooden railings— remain there, bearing witness to the restaurant’s transformation over the decades.

“These are the original railings,” says Ámbar Cor-

rretjer Quiñones, hija de Luis, mientras las toca con una mano y con la otra sostiene fotos y enmarcados con recortes de periódicos de la década del 1980.

Ámbar es la propietaria del restaurante en el que prácticamente se crio. Se lo compró a su papá en el 2015. “Cuando cerró el Hyatt Regency Cerromar bajó mucho la clientela del negocio. Yo trabajaba en Mercadeo en la empresa privada y mi papá me pidió ayuda. Con el tiempo decidí que lo mejor era comprar el restaurante para así hacer los cambios que fueran necesarios, pues papi estaba aferrado a cosas y a personas”, dice la empresaria con honestidad.

Sin embargo, siguen siendo un equipo. Su papá se da la vuelta por el establecimiento semanalmente, mientras que ella le consulta cualquier construcción. “Él sabe cada cuántos pies hay una columna de cemento debajo de este piso”, abunda la propietaria.

El restaurante tiene mucho de la historia familiar. “Una de mis primeras memorias es estar sentada en el salón comedor mientras papi nos acercaba a mí y a mis hermanos langostas vivas. Además, mis papás se conocieron aquí. Mami trabajaba con la hermana del gerente general del restaurante en sus inicios”, explica risueña Ámbar.

Espacios unificados

En sus inicios, La Terraza tenía un solo nivel y allí se vendía pescado frito y tiras de marlín, que eran parte de la pesca del día de Luis. Con los años, se construyó el segundo nivel. “Arriba se vendía solo picadera. Algu-

Ámbar owns the restaurant where she practically grew up. She bought it from her dad in 2015. “When the Hyatt Regency Cerromar shut down, the business saw a sharp drop in clientele. I was working in Marketing in the private sector, but my dad asked me for help. Later on, I decided that the best option was to purchase the restaurant to make the changes it needed. Dad was clinging on to certain people and things,” the entrepreneur candidly explains.

However, they are still a team. Her father visits the establishment every week, and she consults him for any construction work. “He knows the distance between each concrete column under this floor,” she explains.

The restaurant holds a lot of family history. “One of my earliest memories is sitting in the dining area while dad brought live lobsters for me and my brothers to see up close. Besides, this is where my parents met. Mom used to work with the sister of the restaurant’s first general manager,” Ámbar says with a smile.

Unified Spaces

At first, La Terraza only had one level, where they sold fried fish and marlin fillets, all part of Luis’s catch of the day. Later on, they built the second floor. “We used to only serve appetizers upstairs, but some wanted to sit in the open-air terrace and order

El pescado y los mariscos como protagonistas

Ámbar apuesta a la comida saludable: “Quiero que la gente salga a comer y que no lo vea como un pecado. Tenemos platos bajos en azúcar y en carbohidratos”.

Con la reinauguración apuesta a que La Terraza “vuelva a la esencia de los mariscos y pescados porque algunos, en el pasado, me preguntaron si nuestra especialidad era la comida criolla. Pero quiero que nos conozcan como el mejor restaurante de pescado y mariscos”.

“En nuestro menú tenemos mero, filete de chillo, dorado, salmón, rodaballo y atún. Además, les compramos a pescadores locales. En cuanto a mariscos, contamos con sepia, que no se consigue en Dorado, solo aquí”, abunda sobre el menú, confeccionado por el chef Edgardo Vázquez.

Entre los platos preferidos está el atún empanado en semilla de sésamo blanco y negro, con glaseado de lavanda, acompañado de col de Bruselas. Las sazones para los pescados y mariscos se confeccionan allí mismo, al igual que las salsas.

Fish and Seafood Take Center Stage

Ámbar is committed to healthy eating. “I want people to eat out without feeling guilty. We serve low-sugar and low-carb dishes.”

She is also certain that La Terraza’s renovation “will lead the business back to its roots, serving fish and seafood. Because people used to ask me if our specialty was criollo (Puerto Rican creole) food. But I want us to be known as the best fish and seafood restaurant.”

“Our menu features grouper, snapper fillet, mahi-mahi, salmon, turbot, and tuna. We also buy from local fishermen. In terms of seafood, we have cuttlefish, which you can’t find anywhere else in Dorado,” she elaborates on the menu designed by chef Edgardo Vázquez.

The most popular dishes include tuna breaded in black and white sesame seeds and served with lavender glaze and brussel sprouts. Their sauces and seasonings used for the fish and seafood are made in-house.

Lo nuevo: cócteles sugar-free

“Quiero llegar a un público nuevo, por eso elevamos un poco el diseño para atraer a los residentes de Dorado que van llegando”, explica la joven que se crio en la calle camino al balneario del pueblo costero. Para ello, añadió cocteles sin azúcar.

Wilfredo Santiago, gerente general y maestro de coctelería, tuvo a su cargo la encomienda, y entre los ofrecimientos hay vodkas sin azúcar y bebidas confeccionadas con Finlandia Botanical de Wildberry y Rose.

Próximamente, incluirán también postres sin azúcar. Pero, por el momento se encuentran probando distintas recetas.

“Después de varios meses cerrados por reconstrucción ahora queremos celebrar. Llevamos 40 años, somos una familia. Tengo un empleado, José Santiago, que lleva aquí 26 años y es el encargado de la preparación de arroces y salsas. No sé si yo vaya a estar por siempre aquí como papi, pero por ahora me disfruto mucho este trabajo”, comenta Ámbar, entusiasmada sobre lo nuevo que tiene y que traerá La Terraza a la gastronomía de Dorado.

“I want to reach a new audience. That’s why we made some design upgrades to attract the new arrivals in Dorado’s community,” explains the young woman, who grew up on the street leading to the beach of this coastal town. This is why she introduced sugar-free cocktails.

General manager and mixologist Wilfredo Santiago was entrusted with this task, and now the establishments offers sugar-free vodka and cocktails crafted with Wildberry & Rose Finlandia Botanical vodka.

Soon, they will also introduce sugar-free desserts, though at the moment, they’re trying out different recipes.

“After shutting down for several months for the renovation, we’re in the mood to celebrate. We’ve been here for 40 years. We’re a family. I have an employee, José Santiago, who has been with us for 26 years, in charge of preparing our different sauces and rices. I don’t know if I’m staying here for the rest of my life, like dad did, but I’m really enjoying this job right now,” Ámbar states with enthusiasm about the innovations La Terraza will be bringing to Dorado’s cuisine.

El SEP un culturalespacio

Las calles de Dorado son el lienzo perfecto por la arquitectura que las adorna, el verdor que arropa las aceras y los pies que las transitan. La Sala de Exposiciones del Plata, conocido como el SEP, las ve con los mismos ojos y desde el 2003 vela por la promoción del arte para revitalizar el municipio desde la calle Industria #27.

La histórica estructura vio una restauración de su esplendor y hoy está consagrada a las artes, amparada por el gobierno municipal y asignada al Departamento de Asuntos Culturales de Dorado. Hoy día sirve a la comunidad que la rodea mediante el Programa Regenerador Urbano.

Una conversación con la naturaleza

La zona de La Marina, a lo largo de la ribera del Río La Plata, es el camino por el que se activa la vida cultural y turística que promueve el Programa Regenerador Urbano, de la mano también de la Fundación arte_FITS. SEP A Space of Culture

The streets of Dorado are perfectly painted with architecture that adorns them, greenery that envelops its sidewalks, and the feet that walk along them. Sala de Exposiciones del Plata, also known as SEP, looks at this canvas through the same eyes. Since 2003, it has been promoting art as a way to revitalize the city from its location on Calle Industria #27.

The historic building that houses the gallery has been restored to its former splendor and is now devoted to art under the Dorado Department of Cultural Affairs and the supervision of the municipal government. It currently serves the surrounding community through the Urban Regenerator Program.

A Conversation With Nature

In the area of La Marina, along La Plata River, is the road through which the city’s cultural and touristic sectors are coming to life under the Urban Regenerator Program and hand in hand with the

En apoyo de los artistas

La preparación de cada exhibición en la Sala de Exhibiciones del Plata toma un año de coordinación y muchas de estas surgen de propuestas sometidas por los artistas y otras por invitación. Un comité designado se encarga de seleccionar aquellas propuestas que tengan un contexto contemporáneo para formar parte de la sala, que son dirigidas al público de todas las edades. To this end, the Foundation and the municipality of Dorado have envisioned a complete transformation of the area through the creation of an alternative, lively new space, where art takes center stage. Similarly, through SEP, the community of Dorado, art, and nature are brought together.

“Dorado es Verde” was arte_FITS’ first bid to promote this approach, and over the years they have strengthened their bond with the municipality by creating a strong platform for promoting events related to the arts and the environment in Dorado. Currently, they have made use of Land Art, a wellknown artistic concept applied directly to nature and that exists only for a short period of time, as a tribute to the Dorado Beach Resort. Artists such as Sofía Maldonado, Teresa Mulet, and Vientre Compartido have participated in this project, which transcends the ephemeral through the use of photography to take part in the Art in Nature program.

In Support of the Artists

Each exhibition at SEP requires a year of planning. Many of them are the result of proposals submitted by the artists themselves, and others by invitation. A designated committee is tasked with

Verónica Matta, coordinadora de la Sala de Exposiciones del Plata, afirma que el norte de este espacio siempre ha sido la promoción de la importancia que representa la alianza entre el arte, la naturaleza y Dorado. Este último ha sido el motor que ha dado pie a este proyecto al asistir a las exhibiciones, talleres creativos, conferencias y eventos culturales de música, baile, teatro y literatura, dentro y fuera de la sala.

Cada vez que se celebra el festival de arte urbano Color Caribe, el Gran Parque Agroturístico se inunda de una vibra energizante y colorida. La pintura que llega en galones comienza a tomar forma. Y es durante dos fines de semana que el talento de decenas de reconocidos artistas locales e internacionales se hace visible con obras inspiradas en la historia y la cultura caribeña sobre un lienzo nada convencional: vagones.

Este 2023 es el tercer año en el que ese lienzo duro e industrial pierde su look para transformarse en la idea y la inspiración de un artista. With its arrival, the Color Caribe urban art festival floods the Grand Park of Ecologics and Agrotourism with an energizing and colorful vibe that brings about copious amounts of paint that slowly but surely begin to take shape. During this two-weekend event, you can witness the talent of dozens of renowned local and international artists, who share their artwork inspired by Caribbean history and culture. And they do so by using one unconventional canvas: shipping containers.

This is the third year in which this canvas loses its rough and industrial look to transform into an artist’s muse and creation. For two weekends, from November 17 to 19 and 24 to 26, you can be part of a free, family and pet friendly event, showcasing handcrafted artwork, art workshops, and delicious cuisine. Según los expertos, el órgano sexual más importante es el cerebro. Con él, nuestra imaginación es capaz de estimularnos eróticamente mejor que cualquier imagen explícita, si la dejamos. No debemos subestimar su poder de hacernos figurar lo inimaginable. Me atrevo a asegurar lo complicado que es incursionar en la literatura erótica, a pesar de que probablemente existe desde que comenzamos a escribir. Una muestra de esta literatura se remonta a hace siglos. En Decamerón, de Bocaccio, podemos encontrar amplia evidencia de ello y es un texto del Medievo, por ejemplo.

En Puerto Rico, algunos escritores han incursionado en ella, aunque su obra no se limita a este tipo de literatura. Pongamos el caso de Mayra Montero, quien logró parte de su fama literaria al ganar el premio Sonrisa Vertical con su novela Púrpura profundo en 2000. Si te estás preguntando qué es el premio Sonrisa Vertical, tómate unos momentos para imaginarlo. Sí… esa misma es la sonrisa a la que se refiere. Muchas de las novelas de Montero tienen un componente erótico, así que tienes varias opciones, como La última noche que pasé contigo (1991), además de la obra premiada.

Sensuality in Puerto Rican Literature

Experts claim that the most important sex organ is the brain. If we allow it, our imagination within this organ can provide erotic stimulation better than any explicit image. We shouldn’t underestimate its power to make us imagine the unthinkable. I can testify to how complicated it is to venture into erotic literature, even though it has probably existed since the moment we started to write. One such piece of literature dates back centuries: The Decameron, which was written in the Middle Ages by Giovanni Bocaccio and offers ample evidence of this.

Some Puerto Rican authors have also dabbled in this type of literature even when their body of work spans other genres. Such is the case of Mayra Montero, who attained some of her literary acclaim by winning the Sonrisa Vertical award in the year 2000 for her novel Deep Purple. If you’re wondering what the Sonrisa Vertical (“vertical smile”) award is, take a minute to think about it. Yes, they’re referring to that smile. Many of Montero’s novels feature an erotic component, so you have other novels to choose from, such as The Last Night I Spent with You (1991).

Otra autora puertorriqueña que trabaja con temas eróticos es Mayra Santos Febres. Para muestra de ello, considera el título de Cualquier miércoles soy tuya. Al igual que su tocaya Montero, Santos Febres maneja el erotismo en gran parte de su ficción para adultos. Nuestra señora de la noche, por ejemplo, tiene como protagonista a la figura histórica de Isabel “La Negra” Luberza Oppenheimer, una madama de renombre en su época, mientras que la trama de Fe en disfraz, gira en torno a una relación sexual.

Si buscas narraciones más cortas, la editorial Gnomo Literario, publicó la Antología de cuentos pornoeróticos de Gnavidad, que contiene una variedad de cuentos risqué. Gran parte de su catálogo también trabaja con estos temas, cuya propuesta es con frecuencia lo homoerótico.

Por otra parte, la autora Alé Wal publicó en 2020 Encuerándome, un libro de cuentos eróticos ambientados en el ficticio pueblo de Jacana. Encuerándome 2 se espera en esta temporada otoñal y es una continuación de la primera antología.

Another Puerto Rican author who explores erotic themes is Mayra Santos Febres. One good example is her book Any Wednesday I’m Yours. Just like her namesake, Mayra Santos Febres deals with eroticism in much of her adult fiction. Our Lady of the Night, for instance, follows its protagonist, historical figure Isabel “La Negra” Luberza Oppenheimer, a madame of renown in her time; while Fe en disfraz (“Faith in Disguise”) centers around a sexual relationship.

If you’re looking for a shorter piece, publisher Gnomo Literario released Antología de cuentos pornoeróticos de Gnavidad, an anthology of pornoerotic or risqué tales. A large portion of their catalog also delves into these themes, frequently focusing on homoeroticism.

Meanwhile, author Alé Wal published Encuerándome (“Stripping Down”), a book of erotic stories that take place in the fictional town of Jacana. Its sequel anthology, Encuerándome 2, is expected to come out this fall.

Esta pequeña muestra de literatura erótica boricua de seguro estimulará la imaginación… y, tal vez, más que eso. Ten en mente que la literatura erótica no deja de ser literatura, es decir, un arte cuya preocupación mayor es la sensualidad humana. Trabajarla requiere seriedad y talento para que se tome en serio y no se menosprecie. Esta selección da fe de ello.

Keep in mind that erotic literature is still literature, that is to say, a form of art concerned primarily with human sensuality. Dealing with it requires dedication and talent to be taken seriously and avoid being underestimated. This selection is a testament to that.

¿Qué has escuchado sobre la inteligencia artificial (IA)? ¿Sabes, realmente, a qué se refiere? Recientemente, debes haber recibido decenas de noticias sobre los nuevos alcances de la inteligencia artificial, pero ¿por qué debe importarte?

La inteligencia artificial podría definirse como un conjunto de tecnologías programadas para ejecutar funciones que antes solo podría realizar una persona. Estas nuevas habilidades son capaces de analizar datos, redactar textos y hasta realizar cirugías que antes eran impensables para cualquier aparato.

Por esta capacidad de asumir tareas cognitivas, hay quienes han revivido el viejo temor de ser suplantados por máquinas. Los primeros en preocuparse han sido los analistas de datos, los programadores y los escritores. Tanto es así que este último grupo ya ha comenzado a protestar. Los actores y los escritores de Hollywood iniciaron una huelga, en parte por el uso de la IA en la industria cinematográfica. Estos acusan a la industria de perpetuar sus semblanzas sin pagarles a los actores. Es decir, podrían grabar a un actor o actriz para una escena, y luego utilizar la imagen en otras producciones, sin pagarle un centavo más a quien actuó. Además, denuncian que una IA ya ha comenzado a escribir libretos sin tener que pagarle a un guionista. De igual manera, artistas gráficos, compositores y locutores también han comenzado a afectarse por el uso de voces automatizadas, diseños prehechos y redacción de todo tipo de documento, basados en IA. Otros, más positivos, se muestran esperanzados porque esta llamada inteligencia artificial aporte valor y reduzca el tiempo de ejecución de sus tareas diarias.

Mastering Artificial Intelligence

What have you heard about artificial intelligence (AI)? Do you really know what it means? Lately, you must have come across dozens of news stories about the latest AI developments, but why should it concern you?

AI could be defined as a range of technologies that have been programmed to perform tasks that could only be performed by humans before. These new technologies can analyze data, write text, and even perform surgeries that were previously unimaginable for any device.

For some, this ability to perform cognitive tasks has stirred up the old fear that we will be replaced by machines. Data analysts, programmers, and writers have been the first to express concerns. In fact, writers as a collective have already raised their voice in protest. The use of AI in the film industry is one of the reasons why Hollywood’s actors and writers went on strike recently. Strikers accuse the industry of intending to use actors’ likenesses in perpetuity without paying them. This means that they could record an actor in a scene and then use their image in other productions without paying them another cent. They also claim that an AI has already started writing scripts, precluding the need to pay a screenwriter for the task. Similarly, graphic artists, composers, and voiceover artists have started feeling the impact of the use of automated voices, ready-made designs, and drafting for all kinds of documents, all based on AI. Those who are rather optimistic hope that this so-called “artificial intelligence” will add value and reduce the time it takes to perform daily tasks.

ChatGPT, de OpenAI, es una inteligencia artificial a la cual le formulas preguntas como si fuera una persona. Puedes pedirle que te redacte un resumen de un libro o te recomiende una película, entre muchas otras funciones. La IA recopilará toda la información que encuentre de un libro que se llame así, pero, cuidado, porque siempre deberás cerciorarte de que es el texto que le solicitas. Una vez encuentre el libro por toda la Internet, escribirá un resumen. Si le pides la recomendación de películas, escogerá una y te dirá quién es el director, resumirá la trama y te proveerá una explicación acerca de por qué deberías verla.

La manera en que la IA redacta sus respuestas es muy correcta en cuanto a ortografía, gramática y estilo. Pero carece de criterio propio para discernir cuál de las fuentes a las que accede provee información confiable. Tal y como ocurre cuando buscamos fuentes en internet, a veces, la información que te brinda es falsa. En ocasiones, ChatGPT admitirá que no sabe alguna respuesta, pero en otras se inventará la información. No te sorprendas cuando te presente un dato inventado como verdad absoluta.

Casos de resultados inventados han alcanzado hasta la rama judicial. Recientemente, se discutió el caso de un abogado de Nueva York que utilizó ChatGPT para las argumentaciones de una demanda. Seguramente, el abogado buscaba ahorrar el tiempo que se tardaría en una investigación con fuentes primarias. El problema explotó cuando el Tribunal descubrió que seis de los casos que citó el abogado fueron inventados por el software. El abogado recibió sanciones y multas.

For example, when you talk to Siri (iPhone’s virtual assistant), you’re accessing its database through programmed actions. The same goes for Amazon’s Alexa and some of the chatbots you may have seen on different websites. Chatbots respond to your questions either by text message or through a chat window in the same page. You may have come across the generic “How can we help you?” chatbot product. Admittedly, some of these services are more sophisticated and may give the impression that you are talking with a “real” person, but that is not the case.

What about ChatGPT? Can it save me the trouble of thinking?

OpenAI’s ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence you can ask questions to as if it were a person. You can ask it to recommend a movie or write the summary of a book, among many other features. The AI will gather all the information it can based on the book title you specify, but watch out! You should always check to see if it actually pertains to the book you requested. Once it finds online matches for the book, it will write a summary. If you ask it to recommend a movie, it will pick one, tell you who directed it, summarize the plot, and explain why you should watch it.

The way ChatGPT drafts its answers is quite accurate in terms of spelling, grammar, and style. However, the AI lacks the ability to discern which of the sources accessed provides reliable information. Just like when we search for online sources, some of the information found is not accurate. ChatGPT will sometimes admit that it does not know the answer, but other times, it will make up the information. Do not be surprised when it feeds you a made-up fact as if it were the absolute truth.

Si es así,¿por qué usar la inteligencia artificial?

A pesar de sus imperfecciones, la inteligencia artificial está destinada a cambiar nuestra manera de vivir, aunque no sepamos exactamente cómo lo hará. Como se ha mencionado, es posible que transformará el panorama laboral. Hace unos años, se pensaba que la tecnología se utilizaría para remplazar a los choferes de taxis y camiones. Aunque ha habido ciertos avances en la transportación, aún no se ha materializado el cambio radical esperado.

Ahora bien, la tecnología sí es capaz de ayudarte mientras conduces. La inteligencia artificial ya te alerta acerca de condiciones de tránsito en general, te avisa si te estás desviando de un carril, te aconseja a no conducir bajo estado de embriaguez o te sugiere la mejor ruta hacia tu destino.

Otras ventajas de gran utilidad son los cada vez más modernos sistemas de referencias en línea. Hace poco, Microsoft integró una IA a su programa de búsqueda Bing (es decir, el Google de Microsoft). El resultado presenta un buscador con el que puedes llevar a cabo una conversación más amena con tu computadora cuando buscas información sobre un tema. Si te gusta cocinar, confieso que su uso es tentador. Digamos que quieres preparar un risotto de tomates para tu cena de hoy. Si realizas la búsqueda de recetas por el tradicional Google, con una búsqueda así: “Cómo cocinar risotto”, te aparecerán 18 millones de recetas, así como cientos de entradas enciclopédicas y videos con tutoriales. Tardarás al menos media hora en lo que te decides por la receta más factible para ti. Other instances of AI-fabricated results have even involved the judicial branch. Recently, a story came to light about a New York attorney who was using ChatGPT to prepare the arguments for a lawsuit. Surely, the lawyer wanted to cut down on the time it would take to research primary sources. The issue escalated when the Court found out that six of the cases cited by the lawyer were made up by the AI software. The attorney was sanctioned and fined.

Then, why use AI at all?

Despite its flaws, AI is poised to change the way we live, even if we don’t know yet exactly how. As previously mentioned, it is likely to change the labor market. A few years ago, it was believed that technology would replace taxi and truck drivers. While there have been some developments in transportation, the radical change that was expected has not yet materialized.

That being said, technology is capable of assisting you while you drive. AI is already being used to alert you about general traffic conditions, to warn you if you drift off your lane, to advise you not to drive while under the influence of alcohol, or to suggest the best route to your destination.

Other useful advantages include the increasingly modern online reference systems. Microsoft recently integrated AI into its Bing search engine (i.e., Microsoft’s equivalent to Google). The result is a search engine that allows you to have a more enjoyable dialogue with your computer when searching for information on a topic. If you like to cook, I must admit it is tempting to use. Let’s say you want to make a tomato risotto for dinner tonight. A typical Google search for recipes will go like this: you type in “how to cook risotto” and get 18 million recipes in the results, as well as hundreds of encyclopedic entries and video tutorials. It will take you at least half an hour to decide which recipe is best for you. If you try it with Bing, the AI provides a brief explanation of what risotto is, including the sources where it obtained the information, as well as a basic recipe from

Ahora, no esperes grandes obras de arte. El resultado se limitará a textos simples, que deberás pulir. Sin embargo, pueden ser una buena ayuda cuando no sabes cómo comenzar.

Desafíos y advertencias

Las inteligencias artificiales aún no son verdaderamente inteligentes y tienen limitaciones. La tecnología aún está en un estado de desarrollo, aunque haya acaparado la atención de los medios y los gobiernos.

Uno de los retos es el aspecto socioeconómico. ¿Qué sucede si se desplazan a miles de empleados porque fueron suplantados por una IA? Antes se pensaba que redundaría en que harían el trabajo por nosotros, pero esa no es la realidad.

Más allá de los problemas éticos que se avecinan, la inteligencia artificial tiene un problema inmediato: carece de gusto y buen juicio. En esto, todavía no alcanza a los humanos.

Hacemos las paces, pero con cautela

La inteligencia artificial tiene sus usos en estos momentos, pero es necesario ejercer cautela con todo lo que produce. Lo cierto es que ya han captado la atención del mundo y, seguramente, propicien cambios en nuestras vidas. Como toda herramienta, debe usarse con cautela, ya que es capaz de ayudar o perjudicar, según el uso que se le dé. Vale la pena encontrar maneras de hacerte la vida más fácil, ya que las inteligencias artificiales llegaron para quedarse.

AI can also be a source of ideas for creative or academic projects, among other things. If you’re a writer, you may just need a jumpstart for your imagination, so you encourage ChatGPT to give you a story idea. The AI will give you a quick pitch for a story you could write, but keep in mind that the ideas provided by these intelligences are often a series of clichés or tired tropes. Remember that the results are based on a software program that uses all the closed data it can access.

Other recently introduced features include AI’s ability to generate translations, compose songs and poems, create images or résumés, and even transcribe text. Now, don’t expect a masterpiece. The output will be a simple text that you will need to refine. Nonetheless, AIs can be useful when you don’t know how to get started.

Challenges and caveats

AI is not yet truly intelligent and has its limitations. Despite the attention it has attracted from the government and the media, the technology is still in its early stages of development.

One of the issues worth addressing is the socioeconomic aspect of using artificial intelligence. What if thousands of employees were displaced because they have been replaced by AI? It was previously thought that its capabilities would make our work redundant, but that is not the reality.

Beyond the ethical challenges that lie ahead, artificial intelligence has a more pressing concern: its lack of taste and good judgment. It hasn’t caught up with humans yet in this respect.

A cautious truce

AI is certainly useful right now, but we need to be cautious about everything it generates. The fact is that it has already captured the world’s attention and is bound to change how we live. As with any tool, it should be used with prudence: it has the potential to either help or harm, depending on how it’s used. But considering that AI is here to stay, it would make sense to find more ways to make our lives easier.

Heredar enpaz

El único evento que tenemos seguro en la vida es la muerte. Sin embargo, pocas personas planifican qué pasará con sus bienes cuando les toque partir y muchas familias se rompen por conflictos sobre herencias. Aunque no lo parezca “heredar en paz” es posible si nos educamos, planificamos y actuamos con las intenciones correctas. Para lograrlo debemos conocer los cambios que entraron en vigor con el Código Civil de 2020 en cuanto a herencias y testamentos. ¡Veamos algunos!

1.Se eliminó la cuota viudal usufructuaria. Antes la persona viuda recibía una cantidad de dinero determinada de por vida como si fuera una pensión. Ahora la persona viuda tiene derecho a heredar en propiedad el mismo mínimo al cual tienen derecho los descendientes de la persona fallecida, independientemente de que haya otorgado capitulaciones matrimoniales.

2.La persona viuda subió de rango como heredera. Antes, si no había un testamento la persona viuda heredaba luego de los ascendientes. Ahora la persona viuda está en el primer turno, junto a los descendientes de la persona que falleció.

Inheriting in Peace

The only sure thing in life is death. However, few people plan ahead and decide what will become of their property when they pass, and many families shatter because of inheritance conflicts.

Though it may not seem like it, “inheriting in peace” is possible if you learn about inheritance, plan ahead, and act with good intentions. To achieve this, you should learn about the changes that became effective with the 2020 Civil Code in regard to wills and inheritance. Let’s take a look at some of them!

1.The usufruct of the surviving spouse was eliminated. Previously, the surviving spouse received a determined amount of money (similar to a pension) for their lifetime. Now, the surviving spouse has the right to inherit in ownership the same minimum portion as the descendants of the deceased person, regardless of whether a marital agreement was executed.

2.The surviving spouse rose to the category of heir. Before this, if there was no will, the surviving spouse inherited after the ascendants did. Now, the surviving spouse is first in line along with the descendants of the deceased person.

3.

Cambió el mínimo al cual tienen derecho los descendientes, conocido como “legítima”. En el Código anterior, la legítima de los descendientes era dos terceras partes de la herencia, de las cuales una tenía que dividirse en partes iguales entre los hijos y la otra conocida como “mejora” podía dejarse a cualquier descendiente. Ahora la legítima será la mitad de la herencia y la figura de la mejora se eliminó. De querer mejorar a alguien, se deberá recurrir a la mitad de libre disposición.

4.

La persona viuda tiene derecho a la atribución preferente de la vivienda familiar y se prohíbe que le desalojen de esta.

5.

La persona viuda tendrá preferencia para decidir qué hacer con el cadáver y para administrar la herencia en lo que se divide, si no hay testamento o si el testamento no especifica esos detalles.

6.Si hay personas legitimarias (descendientes, cónyuge o, en su defecto, ascendientes), las donaciones que la persona fallecida haya hecho en los 10 años previos a su muerte se sumarán al momento de calcular la herencia. Este cómputo se realiza para velar que no se hayan

Previously, the legitimate portion of the descendants was two-thirds of the inheritance, one of which had to be divided equally among the children and the other one, known as the betterment portion (mejora), could be left to any descendant. If there is a desire to leave a larger portion of the inheritance to someone, such portion must be taken from the half of the disposable portion (libre disposición)

The surviving spouse has the right to preferential attribution of the family residence, and eviction from it is prohibited.

5.

The surviving spouse has preference to decide how to dispose of the body of the deceased person and administrate the inheritance while it is distributed if there is no will or if the will does not specify such details.

6.

If there are forced heirs (descendants and/or surviving spouses or, in the absence thereof, ascendants), the gifts that the deceased person made in the ten years prior to their death are included

realizado donaciones en vida para burlar el mínimo que hay que dejar como legítima. Lo donado a una persona legitimaria se considerará un adelanto de legítima. Contrario al Código Civil de 1930, el Código Civil de 2020 no provee para dispensar o eximir de este cómputo a la persona que haya recibido la donación.

7.

Las deudas de la herencia se pagarán con los bienes de la herencia y no se tocarán los bienes de la persona heredera como norma general.

Estas nuevas disposiciones del Código Civil de 2020 aplicarán a las herencias de personas que hayan fallecido del 28 de noviembre de 2020 en adelante. Las herencias de quienes hayan fallecido antes se regirán por el Código Civil de 1930. Si una persona hizo su testamento antes del 28 de noviembre de 2020, es imprescindible que acuda ante su oficina notarial de preferencia para consultar si es conveniente enmendar su testamento.

Por último, cabe destacar que los bienes inmuebles situados en Puerto Rico siempre se regirán por lo dispuesto en el Código Civil de Puerto Rico, independientemente de que la persona esté domiciliada en otro país.

Toda familia merece conocer qué procede y qué no en cuanto a este tema. Gifts made to a forced heir are considered to be part of the legitimate portion given in advance. Contrary to the 1930 Civil Code, the 2020 Civil Code does not provide for the person who received the gift being dispensed or exempted from this computation.

7.Inheritance debts will be paid with inheritance assets, and property of the heir will generally not be affected.

The new provisions of the 2020 Civil Code will apply to inheritances of persons who have passed from November 28, 2020, onward. As to inheritances of persons who have died before such date, the 1930 Civil Code will apply. If someone prepared their will before November 28, 2020, it is essential that they consult their notary of choice on whether it is convenient to amend it.

Lastly, real property located in Puerto Rico will always be governed by the provisions of the Puerto Rico Civil Code, regardless of whether the person is domiciled in another country.

Cerquita de nosotros existe un programa en el que locales y turistas pueden disfrutar de un pedacito de la naturaleza. Su nombre es Ambassadors of the Environment (Embajadores del Medioambiente) y está localizado en el Dorado Beach, A Ritz Carlton Reserve. Este programa fue desarrollado por el explorador francés Jean-Michel Cousteau quien ha seguido el legado de su padre, el recordado oceanógrafo Jacques Cousteau.

Camille Arroyo, supervisora del proyecto, nos comenta que no hay que ser huésped del hotel para ser parte de las excursiones. Cada semana, junto a su equipo (constituido por biólogos y microbiólogos, entre otros amantes del ambiente), desarrollan un calendario de actividades para niños, adultos y familias que permiten conectar con la naturaleza y conocer sobre nuestra cultura y los ecosistemas de la isla.

Explore the Wonders of Dorado Beach Guided by Naturalists

Not far from here, there is a program where locals and tourists can enjoy a little piece of nature. This program is called Ambassadors of the Environment, and it operates out of Dorado Beach, A Ritz Carlton Reserve. It was developed by French explorer Jean-Michel Cousteau, who has carried on the legacy of his father, late oceanographer Jacques Cousteau.

The program’s supervisor, Camille Arroyo, tells us that you don’t need to be a hotel guest in order to join the excursions. Every week, Camille and her team of biologists, microbiologists, and other nature lovers create a calendar of activities that allow

Puedes disfrutar, por ejemplo, de excursiones en bicicleta por la propiedad, caminatas por el Rockefeller Nature Trail, observación de aves, cursos de fotografía submarina, y snorkeling de día o de noche (para los más experimentados y aventureros), entre otros recorridos. Celebración del medioambiente

Cada verano el programa conmemora el Día Mundial del Medioambiente. Celebrating the Environment

Every summer, the program celebrates World Environment Day. This year, attendees enjoyed a presentation by Dr. Richard Murphy, who has worked with Jacques and Jean-Michel Cousteau since 1968. In fact, starting in 1973, Dr. Murphy partnered with Jean-Michel Cousteau to develop programs focused on sharing the ocean’s wonders, thus underscoring Jacques Cousteau’s legacy.

The day’s events included activities such as tree planting, coordinated by Para la Naturaleza; a craft market featuring local artists; plant-based

Excursiones, campamento y más

Con orgullo, Camille nos dio un recorrido por las instalaciones y centro de trabajo de los naturalistas. Ventanales de cristal conectan el local con la playa y en las afueras hay un pequeño huerto casero con piña, tomate y romero, así como otras plantas. Allí se les explica a los visitantes sobre el proceso de composta y la importancia de la polinización de las abejas. El lugar cuenta con un área en donde encontrarás artesanías de artistas locales, a través de una colaboración con la tienda doradeña Local Story. También hay libros para niños y materiales que enfatizan en la protección del medioambiente.

Aparte de desarrollar excursiones, Camille es una experta en crear experiencias para los huéspedes. Una vez una pareja le dijo que quería ver la película Titanic, pero en lugar de hacerlo en el espacio que siempre se destina para esos fines, ideó junto a su equipo que la vieran bajo las estrellas, a la orilla de la playa, con una suculenta cena. ¡Toda una experiencia sensorial!

La meta de Camille es dar a conocer el programa y que tanto huéspedes de otros hoteles como residentes de Puerto Rico participen de las actividades. Por ejemplo, las escuelas Dorado Academy y TASIS Dorado, han visitado las instalaciones, mientras que las mamás que ofrecen home schooling pueden apuntar a sus chicos en los diferentes eventos y así complementar la enseñanza de temas relacionados al medioambiente. El programa cuenta hasta con campamento de verano por semana para niños de cuatro a doce años.

Excursions, Camping, and More

Camille proudly offered a tour of the naturalists’ facilities and work center. Everything there has been designed with the environment in mind, often employing recycled materials. Glass windows provide the site with a view to the beach, and a small outdoor garden grows pineapples, tomatoes, rosemary, and other plants. Visitors of the site receive information about the composting process and the importance of bee pollination. You can also find handicrafts made by local artists through a collaboration with Local Story, a local Dorado shop. Children’s books and resources to encourage environmental conservation are also available.

Aside from developing excursions, Camille is an expert at creating unique experiences for guests. Once, a couple told her that they wanted to watch the movie Titanic. Rather than screening the film in the usual space, she and her team arranged it so that they could watch it by the beach, under the stars and paired with a succulent dinner. A total sensory experience!

Camille’s goal is to promote the program and encourage guests from other hotels, as well as Puerto Rico’s residents, to participate in the activities. For example, schools like Dorado Academy and TASIS Dorado have visited the facilities, and parents who homeschool can sign up their kids for different activities to supplement their education on environmental issues. The program even offers a week-long summer camp for children of ages 4 to 12.

The 2023 class of TASIS Dorado held their long-awaited prom night at the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel. Event designer Emilio Olabarrieta drew inspiration from the island of St. Barths to create a festive, elegant, and modern atmosphere. Rosalina Torres was the event coordinator. Cuenta Regresiva and DJ MENT livened up the evening in collaboration with SAK Enterteinment.

Dorado Academy Prom Night

On a dance floor illuminated in pink and turquoise colors, the 2023 class of Dorado Academy celebrated their long-awaited prom night. The party, with decorations by Bembeteo pa’ los Pekes, was held at El San Juan Hotel in Isla Verde. Cuenta Regresiva provided the musical entertainment. The after party was hosted at Club Brava with Dei V and Yovngchimi.

Los Ninjabots de Dorado en competencia de robótica

Los Ninjabots de Dorado se convirtieron en el equipo campeón puertorriqueño del 2023 en la competencia internacional de STEM FIRST Lego League (FLL). El equipo sobresalió en todas las categorías: Juego del Robot, Diseño del Robot, Valores Fundamentales y Proyecto de Innovación. Su proyecto consistió en diseñar una Cápsula Solar de Origami reutilizable capaz de proporcionar refugio y electricidad a los más necesitados. En la competencia FLL internacional, celebrada en Massachusetts, el conjunto obtuvo el 7mo lugar, recibió el Premio de Jueces y formó alianzas exitosas con otros equipos.

The Ninjabots, a team from Dorado, became the 2023 Puerto Rican champions in the global STEM competition FIRST Lego League (FLL). They excelled in all judgment categories: Robot Game, Robot Design, Core Values, and Innovation Project. For their project, they designed a reusable Origami Solar Pod, which could provide shelter and electricity to those in need. At the international FLL competition in Massachusetts, the team achieved a 7th place ranking, received the Judges’ Award, and formed successful alliances with other teams.

This photo from the El Mundo newspaper photo collection shows a child interviewing the first governor elected by Puerto Ricans (seated left, shirtless), Luis Muñoz Marín. This took place in 1959, during a governors’ gathering hosted by Rockefeller at the hotel.
